“We Are Love” – Song Commentary by Dr. Pelè

In this heartfelt commentary, Dr. Pelè shares the personal story and inspiration behind his original song “We Are Love.”

From his childhood in war-torn Nigeria—where his mother’s songs brought peace and hope—to the global pandemic that inspired this message of unity, “We Are Love” is a reminder that when we strip away all the fear, division, and noise, what remains is love.

In this episode, you’ll hear how:
 • The song was born during the isolation of COVID-19
 • A decades-old lyric from Dr. Pelè’s London bandmates (who worked with Prince and Mazarati) found new meaning
 • The music and message merge into a timeless call for healing and togetherness

✨ “We Are Love” isn’t just a song—it’s a declaration of who we truly are.

Dr. Pelè:

Hey, this is Dr. Palay, and I want to welcome you to my commentary on one of my favorite songs. We Are Love. A song I wrote several years ago. Check out the song in the commentary below. We are love. That's all we are. We are love. That's all we are. We are love. We are love. For that is all we are. That's all we are. We are love. For that is all we are. For the answer. But it's been so long. We forgot the question. We forgot the key. That's all we are. That's all we are. That's all we are together. Together. We've come this off. We've come this far. We've come to be on. Everybody's wanted. That's all we're all we up. We've come. I was born in a small village in Nigeria. Some of my earliest memories of my mother is singing. Even during times of war and fear. We had to run and hide in the forest during the Biafran War. And even in those moments of danger, her voice brought peace. That connection between music and healing never left me. It taught me that music isn't just entertainment. It's medicine. It's hope. And that's exactly what I was leaning into when I wrote, We Are Love. I wrote this song during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the darkest and most uncertain moments we've all shared as a human family. I was literally sitting at home in lockdown, like most of us, reflecting on all the division, the fear, the chaos. And I thought, what if we reminded ourselves who we really are? To me, the answer was clear. We are love. That's not just a lyric. That's a truth. I wanted to shout from the rooftop. When we strip away all the noise, all the labels, all the fear, what's left is love. It's what connects us. It's what carried us this far. And it's what will carry us forward. Now, musically, what makes We Are Love really special for me is how it bridges time. Literally. The lyrical scene for this song actually came from a writing session I had decades ago with my old Coco Black bandmates in London. That was me, Marvin, and uh Tony Christian. The two of them, by the way, used to be members of a band called Maserati that Prince put together. And after those days, they joined me in our band, Cocoa Black. Now, one of the lines we wrote back then was, Everybody is searching for the answer. And it stuck with me all these years. And during COVID, that lyric suddenly made sense in a new way. I paired it with a new line. But it's been so long, we forgot the question. And that idea became the emotional core of the song. Musically, it's simple but powerful. The chords create a sense of unity and openness. The lyrics are circular, repeating phrases like, we are love, love, love. Almost like a chant or a reminder that I keep echoing. That was intentional. And at the end, I added a reflective line. When will humanity learn? And that's not meant to be a critique, it's it's a question from the heart. It's a longing. Because when we truly learn that we are love, one love will finally start to heal. So that's my commentary on one of my favorite songs, one of the songs I wrote a while ago called We Are Love. All the best.
