Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 637 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - The worst time to start a pedal company, a Guitar Summit gear haul, and Fender cancels hum
Could you realistically start a pedal company and clear $50k in your first year? A Reddit thread and a 60 Cycle Hum livestream posed the question, and the guys have thoughts. Short version: this might be the worst possible moment to launch, but it doesn't matter if you love guitar gear. Speaking of falling in love with gear, Blake shows off a gorgeous player-worn 1965 Fender Mustang in Daphne Blue, and Richard gets genuinely misty-eyed over a 1992 Zoom 9002 ad that made him feel fifteen again.
Then it's a proper Guitar Summit gear haul from Mannheim. Top of the pile is the Wampler Pedalhead, now tweaked and sounding mighty fine, alongside the upcoming Tone King Royce. The Boss EX-4 FX Expander gets the guys excited as a clever sidecar for small rigs - four effects at once, slow gear and slicer included - while the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X Pro is basically a Captor X thats been training with Arnie as it is pumped. There's also a jaw-dropping demo room that ping-pongs between sixteen heads and sixteen cabs at the flick of a switch - which Brian now needs in his life.
Fender has announced it's "solved" single-coil hum with a secret metal plate under the pickguard - which, the guys note, looks an awful lot like a dummy coil that's been around for years (a humbucker plus twenty percent, as Blake puts it). Brian makes a heartfelt pitch for a full retro mode on the Wampler website, complete with visitor counter and dancing baby Gifs.
Knobless pedals, a skunk that smells like a Willie Nelson concert, missing out on both Google and Bitcoin, the BlackBerry movie, and Brian defending America's spelling one Reddit comment at a time...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!

Good morning. Hello everyone. And good evening. How are you? Are you today? How are you here past week? Past week.
BlakeI wish I could tell you. I don't really remember. One difference.
BrianI uh I have a new pet. I had a new pet. I don't anymore.
RichardOh, oh, wait. Hold on. Is this a skunk or the or the groundhog? Exactly.
BrianExactly. Uh I had a groundhog, which also meant somehow that we had a pet skunk there for a few days, which was amazing to walk into uh the barn here and smell what kind of smelled like a pot factory.
RichardI mean, do do does the smell of skunk actually smell like the smell of marijuana? Kinda. I've always said it it it smells like bad weed, you know how like just junk weed. I've heard people talk about it. Yeah.
BrianYeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I know you've never experienced that, Richard. I've been to a Willie Nelson concert. Yeah, I mean, yeah, yeah. Imagine going to a Willie Nelson concert and and the the smell of that kind of weed. Yeah, it's uh smells pretty skunky, yeah.
RichardOkay, yeah, I've never smelled a skunk, and I doubt I ever will smell a skunk. I didn't even think about that. You don't have those over there.
BrianIt also smells like Nam.
RichardI oddly enough. Also I mean, that's a more touchy subject, Brian. Because as we both know, no one ever flies me to NAM.
BlakeI think uh Amplify Creative should fly you to NAM.
RichardYeah, I thought I think you need to send Amplify Creative some money.
BrianUm why don't you get some of that sweet Oliver FX money and buy yourself a jet?
RichardSweet. I mean, that's a great segue, Bri. Because um, so you shared with me a Reddit Fred. Fred. A Reddit thread. Not Reddit Fred. Red said Fred? What? Reddit. Reddit Fred is a terrible band. Um Reddit Fred. Oh, I do need a name for my band. I I'd come up with the leftovers and the rejects because we all came from other bands. But don't go, don't go too far.
BrianDon't go too far. Reddit, reddit, read it. The weeds already!
RichardRight. There was a great Reddit thread that you shared about, you know, could I realistically start a pedal company and make 50k in my first year? Which incidentally, um, I I responded to, and I said some really nice things about you there, Bri. You might want to go there, and I don't know, you might want to feel like giving me a little bonus at some point for being your personal PR. But it was all actually honestly meant, I'm sad to say. Uh, but then Ryan and Steve from 60 Cycle Hum held a live um kind of show last night where they talked about the same question. And I just happened to be online, so I was merrily typing away, going, Yeah, I've done it, and making 50k in your first year. Good luck to you, my friend. Right. But that's a difficult one. It is, and and it's interesting because actually, you know, a lot of people are saying that they're comparing it to the craft beer industry, which I don't think is fair.
BrianWell, I mean, it's maybe there's some here, yeah. Maybe here in the States, yeah.
RichardYeah. Okay. I mean, again, yeah, naivety, and I don't understand how big that industry wasn't. I mean, I I've seen a bit of it in the States, but we are in a perfect shitstorm of uh timing for starting a pedal company because you've got you know the uncertainty around the world economy, tariffs, new EU posting stuff that is very complicated, no one's got any money, modellers are getting better, there's no doubt about it. So I would say uniquely and cheaper, I mean, the race to the bottom has has already been won for 150 bucks, you can have every amp and pedal you want. So it is objectively the worst time to be starting a pedal company, which about fits my profile of luck in business. I was like, ah, worst time to start one. I may as well do it. But I'd also say this I got an idea.
BrianWhy don't I start a web design company at the same time? In an SEO company.
RichardBrilliant. Yeah. Um, I might also start a software outsourcing company too, because people are gonna need more developers moving forward. There you go, that's right.
BrianYou learn to write code.
RichardYeah, yeah, definitely. Absolutely. But I I also think this, Bri, you A, you've got to start at some point, and look, we all know it's taken me years to get this off the ground. Literally, like two years of you ribbing me to get this off the ground.
BrianBut I mean, and that's not laziness, it takes a while to get off the moving pieces, yeah.
RichardUh I mean, look, it's not laziness. Yes, if it was my only job, it would have happened in half the time, for sure. So, you know, I was juggling 15 other jobs whilst doing it, but also there are a lot of moving parts, and you know, the parts shouldn't move around, you gotta solder those in.
BrianYeah, you gotta solder those in that they won't. Even those volume and and game parts.
RichardAll right, I'm gonna solder them in.
BrianNo, but just solder those right in. Yeah, yeah.
RichardNobody needs has anyone ever released a pedal with just one setting? Just literally the leaves. Love pedal believe. Do you remember that?
BrianWhat's the what's the MOSFET pedal that had just trim pots, no knobs?
BlakeOh, the uh one uh Blackstone appliances Blackstone Appliances one, yeah. Yeah, and I think the Love Pedal Believe was like a ring mod that just had an on and off switch, if I remember correctly.
RichardYeah, knobless pedals, that's the future chap. So anyway, it it is a bad time to start one, but I'd say this as well. I I didn't start this thinking that I could make significant money in year one. I started this because I love pedals, and I'm hoping that in year five I might make enough money to pay my mortgage for one month of 12. So let's see. But it it is a it is a hard industry, but I also have witnessed and and I and I know both of you have too, and and uh certainly some of our listeners, a massive circular habit with guitars. People will go off pedals, they'll go on to modelers, modelers will be the thing for a while, then one day they'll go, Oh, this pedal sounds great through this tube amp, and bang, suddenly why why did why did I stop using pedals?
BrianThis sounds amazing.
BlakeYeah, and they sell their modeler or throw it throw it in the corner, they play tube amps for a while, and another few years usually, and then they're like, Man, this is heavy. I want to go back to my modeler, and that's the cycle continues.
BrianYeah, there'll be some sort of new neural modeling something or rudder, and everyone will jump on that for two or three years, and then the cycle continues. So yeah. We still love our 1950s technology. We genuinely do.
RichardI do. I do. I mean, I'm playing with some very modern 1950s technology at the moment. I'll tell you about that later. And and it's wondrous. Like there is there is nothing that can't be solved by the right configuration of vacuum tubes that were originally designed for like a radio or something.
BlakeIt's definitely helpful magic thing.
RichardYeah.
BlakeCould I show you guys a a bit of uh 1960s technology? Would you be interested in seeing some?
BrianDepends what it is. Well, hold on just a moment. This is a new fancy type of guitar string, I wonder. You know? It's uh all new rope string. Oh, he's pulling something off the wall. Let's see what it is. Oh, I know what it is. What is this? He told me about this last week.
BlakeOh, look at that! 1965. Thought it was a 64.
RichardWith original decals as put on by, I'm gonna guess Boss Hogg and the boys. You might be right about this.
BlakeYeah, that would be a very safe guess. I thought it was a 64, it's actually a 65, which is no sweat.
RichardUm, but yeah, 65 is a terrible year. Send it to me immediately. Okay, I'll go. I'll get I'll get it to you.
BlakeThanks. Uh I've been casually looking for a Mustang for a while. A Mustang or a Duosonic or a Bronco. Any of those would have scratched the itch.
BrianI used to have one. Ford Bronco, yeah. Was it a Bronco too? I'm just kidding. I never had a Bronco.
BlakeWait a minute. I'm starting to notice something. Ford Bronco, Ford Mustang, Fender Mustang, Fender Bronco.
RichardHmm, interesting.
BlakeCease and desist your activities immediately, patron. That's right. But yeah, I uh I've been kind of casually looking for one for a while, and Thunder Road Guitars in Seattle posted this, and I called them and was like, okay, thanks. I need that now. And they were like, okay. Um, and uh ironically, I'm visiting them this week, but this showed up to me last week. So yeah, it's uh new to me 1965 Fender Mustang. Question one, how does it play? Brilliant. Look at this. Brian, Brian, you're gonna like this. You see the back of that neck? That's worn on the top there. There I like that. There's no finish on the back of this neck.
BrianYou know what that means. That's a player.
BlakeThat's a player.
BrianYeah, that's a player guitar. Somebody notice it's nicotine stained, so you know, I don't know if it's everything was stained nicotine in it. It doesn't smell like it.
BlakeI've smelled some that were clearly nicotine stained. You can kind of have a smoking some.
RichardThis like this doesn't smell like it, but it looks like I don't know off the top of my head, but I I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying something about Daphne Blue going a particular shade of green when exposed. Well, main mainly to radiation, but some sunlight. Or or Merrican stickers. Or or Mercan stickers.
BrianYou know, we we've talked before about that old amp smell in a can, you know, as a joke. But the same thing about old guitar cases. Oh, yeah. That's product waiting to be had waiting to be made right there.
RichardI'm I'm gonna segue to another thing that I put in the notes, but this literally happened to me tonight while I was doing the research. I came across an old um advert for a zoom 9002 strap-mounted thing, uh, effects processor from from like this was from like 1992. And I swear to you both, I went through, and I'm not high, well, not not unnecessarily. I mean, I mean look back tracking. Hang on, hang on. I I actually felt like my head was being pulled towards the advert and I was shrinking to a little boy, and I had that feeling, I was reading the text, and I felt the excited feeling I felt when I was 15 and read about effects that I couldn't afford.
BrianIt was that about old guitar magazines. Yeah, that's the best thing, you know.
BlakeYeah, those things that used to be kind of annoying, you'd be like, oh, the ads, I want to read about how to play like Steve I. And now we go back and we're like, look at these awesome old ads, right?
RichardDude, honestly, I've I I swear to I've never felt like it before. It was like in my head, I could see myself shrinking in years, and like my my 15-year-old brain came out and was just like, look how sick this affects you. Now it doesn't look sick, in fact, it looks like a giant Casio watch face, but I loved it then. Well, sell it to me harder, why don't you? And and hadn't looked at one for a while, and honestly, it it reminded me of why I love guitar gear so much. It it's in the blood. I can't expunge this. Like, as as bored as I might get some weeks with guitar gear, there's always something that brings me back. Because sometimes you know how it is, Brian, and and Blake, you too. We're surrounded by gear, and it's very blase, and it's like uh yes, I have just received three new dumbles to test. Oh, what am I gonna do with them? But actually, yeah. But there's still some magic there, and I'm really happy to report that magic can be brought out by surprise. Does that happen to either of you?
BlakeYeah, it's it's it it always kind of hits me when I'm feeling slightly jaded, and I'm like, ah, you know, this stuff is cool, I love it, but but like I'm I've I've seen it all. I'm an old man, I've seen everything. But then once in a while, it doesn't matter because something will come along, like this Mustang, actually, and I'm like, oh, I just turn into a child again. I'm like, oh, I want that. Oh, give me that, I need that, and then I spend three hours every night playing it, and that's kind of what it's all about in some ways.
BrianTo me, it's uh it's so similar to like 80s skateboards and BMX bikes. Same feeling to me. Richard, there's I'm always sending you pictures. I'm like, look at this horror from 1984. I love this.
BlakeWhat is it about the stuff from when we were, you know, 12 to 16 that just nostalgia how you think life was perfect back then.
RichardIt really wasn't, but it was like it was materially worse in so many ways. But it it feels like it was it was funny. I was I was on a podcast uh last week with some other clients. I was producing it, so I wasn't really in the studio, but they could still see me. And all of them were sat in rooms with like beautiful like carriage clocks behind them and lovely fireplaces and globes, and I'm like, and there's me with my sword, my skateboard, and my guitar band joining in with you all. That's right. You see this sick electronic drum kit I have? Oh man, but it is sick, and I played it this weekend, and it's really sick. Yeah, I'm really chuffy for getting that uh that moose tang there. That's cool, man. Uh that's a lovely guitar.
BlakeIt's it's cool to check one off. Like I've been casually I like to do, I've explained it before, like a soft search. Like I have a kind of a running list of gear in my head that like when the right one comes along, I don't know, I'm not like actively looking for it and scanning reverb necessarily, but like when the right one comes along, I'll know. And this one hit and it was like, that's the right one. That's the one I've been waiting for.
RichardAnd man, Daphne Blue has been on my list for a while. When I went out to Tenerife 2018, maybe we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel and they let you hire a guitar there. They're like, if you're staying at the Hard Rock Hotel, you can hire a guitar. They make you put a thousand buck deposit down, and then they give you like a a Mexican standard telly. I was like, hold on a minute. I'll give you a deposit that's more than this guitar's worth. Uh-huh. Um, but I did it anyway, and because I thought how cool was that, and then it was fun, but it was Daphne Blue, and I fell in love with Daphne Blue after great, great colour. Um, and and speaking of colours, we were so quick to making jokes about the Land Rover colour. I'm glad you brought this up. Boy, did I get some messages about this with the new PRS guitars that we didn't mention the fact that the name Land Rover Defender, if you read it in a certain way, defender. Defender. Get it? It's the Land Rover, but it's the PRS Defender. I mean like talk about couldn't see the wood for the trees, chaps.
BlakeI mean, it it it did occur to me, but I didn't I I part of me was like, nah, that's not what they did. And then, as some listeners rightfully pointed out, John Mayer's involved in this. Of course that's what it is. Because he has that kind of sense of humor. Of course that's what it is. I wouldn't realise that.
RichardI just assumed he's a big Land Rover Defender fan.
BlakeI think it might be all of these things.
RichardYeah. Well, it's the perfect and someone pointed out that Paul Reed Smith is the master of this particular sense of humor. And I'm like, yeah, that that resonates actually. So uh, yes, we we take our punishment, listeners. We didn't mock it for being called the PRS defender.
BlakeEither way, I like the look of them.
RichardI I am probably upgrading the um tuners in my Silver Sky SE this year because it has non-locking tuners and they aren't as stable as the the core Silver Sky uh locking tuners, and like it's a straight drop-in. So I was like, I'm just gonna upgrade this this mug, as Brian would say.
BlakeI I was really pleased uh because when you showed the defender to us last week, that was the first time I'd seen it, and I was really pleased that the internet did not disappoint with is the wiring gonna be bad from the factory in this one too. Like we got we got there first.
RichardYeah we definitely got there first. So uh um, yeah, good, good. Well, uh, so a bit of news. There's a lot of gear to get through this week because it was guitar summit in Mannheim, Germany, and uh um yeah, here's what I'm gonna tell all YouTubers out there, right? If you put chapters in your YouTube video, which you should do, I'm just gonna skip right through each of them, going not interested in that gear, not interested in that gear, not interested in that gear. It's gonna allow me to watch your 30-minute like guitar summit video in 30 seconds, which I've done with every YouTuber.
BrianUh another thing you can do though is you can hit the Gemini button there and have it make chapters for you, just in case.
RichardAll right, AI Stan. Gee.
BlakeGod, that's no, that's actually a really good idea. No, that's Brian, that's not Stan.
BrianI don't know who click the little AI button, make it work for its money.
RichardHonestly, though, some of the new tools around you know, uh sort of YouTube and videos and AI transcripts, they're so useful. They are like getting a transcript like instantly is so so good. Uh, but anyway, I digress. Firstly, there was more YouTuber drama that got resolved at um Manheim. Did they have a good wrestling? Did they have a wrestling? What I heard is Henning got two of the protagonists into a room. There was some Vaseline, there was like a cage, and I think some sort of like 80s music was playing. Okay, and then they came out and released a video saying how much they loved each other. I don't know what happened in there, but I think it was a little bit like uh I don't know if you've seen that that video to the Frankie Goes to Hollywood song Two Tribes. Reminded me of that a little bit.
BrianThere's a lot of references in here that I'm too too young for. I have no idea what you're talking about.
RichardExcellent. Um so Guitar Summit. So some big releases were shown at Guitar Summit. Tell me the biggest, but also one of the smallest, it was obviously the Wampler pedal head Bry, which uh a few people have uh seen and said sounds mighty fine there.
BrianCool, yeah, yeah.
RichardIt's uh it's a cool thing. The version that got sent to uh um Guitar Summit like is newer than the version I've seen. There's been tweaks, there's been changes, stuff's happened. So yeah, I'm uh I'm very excited. They also showed the Tone King Royce, which is the new AC30 styled um well voxy voiced Tone King preamp pedal, which I have to declare an interest in because I've worked on the non Vox texture on the uh on the amp grille section of the graphics I was chuffed with. Uh so that was cool. That that also sounds amazing. Uh, but the one that really caught me, um, and if you're following in the notes, you might want to scroll all the way down, was the Boss EX4 FX Expander, which is like a kind of sidecar pedal. Like it has all the effects and it can run four at once that you might want to add if you were building a small rig. Like if you wanted modulation, delay, reverb, and some extra gain all in one box, but you didn't want a full modeller, this is that box. And I thought that was kind of a cool idea. I quite like small rigs, and I often think, well, I've got to bring at least a modulation pedal and a delay pedal and probably a compressor, but really the one that I'm stomping on all the time is just you know my distortion pedals. So with something like this, I think it gives you a nice small footprint and some classic cross tones.
BrianTo me, that solves modulation, delay, and reverb, of course, you know? Um yeah, that'd be that's a that's a good idea. Why didn't we do that? Dang it. I mean, we sort of did.
RichardThe catacomb sort of does all of that.
BrianYeah, there's reverb and delay. We didn't add modulation delay as well, but yeah, but I mean, show me your vibe out of that, you know, or show me your uh pitch shifting. Okay. Uh show me your gear and just lights. Actually, don't don't show me your vibe.
RichardI sorry, that's not what I uh I ran past that comment rapidly. I'm gonna Fire myself for not coming up with this pedal for you sooner Bry. Um uh and then I'm gonna send you my C V to get it. Yeah, I think it is a cool thing.
BlakeIt can run all it can run four at a time, too, which is interesting. Uh-huh. And they they've got some weird stuff in there, like the slow gear and the slicer. So they they they definitely didn't just stick with here's some basic stuff. They went for some of the um which makes sense, right? Because you've you've actually talked about this before, Richard, with the slicer. You're like, it's so cool, but like, am I gonna dedicate a pedalboard slot to it?
RichardExactly that. Yeah, yeah. It's it's one of the coolest trem pedals out there, but after you've played with it a couple of times, you're probably gonna relegate it. It's it's just it's too specialized, even though I do fancy having a little play with it now, actually. Yeah, so that was cool. There's also the new Torpedo Captor X Pro, which appears to be twice the Captor X for the similar sort of price range. Oh, what's the difference about this one?
BlakeThat's actually a powerful load box slash attenuator. It's pretty this looks like it's gunning for I mean it's ox box size, right? Yeah.
BrianSo what does it what does this one do differently here? This is this this is uh like my wallet's getting ready to come out for this one. Well, it's got a screen on it, Brian.
RichardSo there's that. Yeah, it has got a small screen on it. Oh, and Brian's wallet has just opened. And wow, it's there's nothing in there. What is that flying out? Are they moths?
BrianSo I mean literally stereo, like four or two different amps.
BlakeI'm I'm scrolling through right now. So we've got oh, okay. So yeah, they've got um line phones out, line out, dry. Oh, so you can do a dry out of it. That's actually pretty clever. I don't know if any of them can do that. That's pretty cool. Um yeah, send and return left, right, like stick two. Oh no, those are stereo effects loops.
RichardOh, you got stereo effects loops, but you've got two line outs. You've got a left and right line out as well. So you can run stereo, you can run stereo effects loop, so true stereo rear. You can basically run two rigs through this mug and get it all back into your computer, headphones, or just like me, use it as one of the world's most expensive attenuators. It's not, and it's great at it, by the way.
BlakeOh, and you're gonna love this. It's got MIDI in. So you can control it via MIDI if you want. Changing out the I imagine that'd be like to change out the different uh speaker sims and stuff.
BrianYeah, but it it is just one amp input though. It is, right? Okay, it is. Okay, I I thought it would be two amps, you know?
RichardBecause I mean you've got a line in as well as an amp in. So I wonder if you can I wonder if you can kind of set that other one to do amp level sign. Maybe, maybe not.
BrianUh I mean, I don't know.
BlakeWhat would you do a line in for? Like this is definitely made with guitar amps in mind. What would you the line into this for? I'm not I'm not fully clear.
BrianThat's a good question. I uh I don't know why you'd want to use an attenuator if you're gonna use the line in side of it. I don't know. I'm sure there's a reason. I just can't think of it off the top of my head. I mean, to me, if you're doing that, you might as well just use an IR loader. You know? Call it a day.
BlakeAnd it's uh it's not a cheap piece of kit. They're retailing for 955 USD. Um but But for what you get, actually, that's not bad. It does seem to me like that I I'm a you guys know I'm a big a two-bamp expander stan, and this looks like it's got some capabilities that the two bamp expander doesn't. And the reason I like the TAE so much is because it was the most flexible version of these type of devices on the market for a long time. So I need to like sit down and read the spec sheets and see which one really is king now, because this is an interesting product for sure.
BrianSomething I'll love is that the attenuator has 13 steps instead of like the three that Captor X had, and the I think two the regular captor had. Yeah, that's uh I love that.
RichardThey are okay, but there is a lot of missing space, isn't there?
BrianYeah, yeah, yeah.
BlakeYeah. Oh, also it looks like we've got some built-in effects. It's like there's a reverb. I hate it already.
BrianReally? No, I'm joking.
BlakeI gotta, I gotta, I gotta watch some videos on this bad boy. Though I need it like I need a hole in the head, but still looks cool.
RichardI I think this flew under a few people's radar because they released it right as as um the the summit started, but but everyone was like, look at these YouTubers fighting each other. And so it drew away from the kind of real news that was happening. Uh yeah, looks very, very cool. It does.
BlakeUm from a product design perspective, it looks awesome.
RichardYeah, no, they are two notes, they're a fantastic um manufacturer, they make very high quality gear, so it's bound to be amazing. Um, I did see something else at Mannheim at the um at the summit that we all need. Now is it a steamroller? Uh no, but I do need one of those. Uh it was it was their amp room, but they had it set up with a switcher that could switch between like 16 different heads and 16 different calves. So you could and it could like ping pong between them. So they're like, now you're playing the orange, now you're playing the marshal, and they had a guy just in the room playing, and this switching was going on. I thought, yeah, I I need that. I need that. Yeah, that sounds great. Imagine ping ponging between two amps to like work out which one you like as well. It's like this one, no, this one, no, this one. That's how you need to test amps.
BlakeIt's well, especially if you're like in a recording studio situation using real real deal amps. Um what a great solution for like, oh well, we need to find this tone, and I don't want to use a modeler. What a fun fun way to do it. Very much a fun way to do that. Who made that switcher?
BrianI think Peter's uh who made it.
RichardYes. I don't want to talk about it because he used to work with us and I don't know what happened.
BrianYes, um Arends. Peter Aaron's, yes. Yep. Yeah. Um you've already said it the same way.
BlakeWe're not gonna say the company name alright. No.
BrianOne's an advert and one isn't. I think um yeah, that's the one that Henning uses, I think.
RichardSo maybe, yeah. It's really good. I mean, look, yeah, it's it's a switcher with whatever it needs to handle current impedance, yada yada, but uh it it's more the concept, and Brian, whether we can make one in a single pedal format, because then I'm talking. No, um yeah, it was uh it was a good demo room. Um, there were some other things there. Engel released a 30 watt savage amp, which is tiny, which is nice. They also released a uh small power amp pedal. It's no pedal head. Just saying, it's just a little power amp. It's kind of like the Seymour Duncan thing. Oh, the the uh what do they call that thing? The power stage is it's a competitor for that, but that's nice, you know. That'll work for some people for sure. They make great gear, so uh yeah, a lot of nice gear came out at Mannheim. Um but yeah, sadly I I didn't get to go again, Bri. That looks a lot closer for you.
BrianYeah, that's like a car drive away.
RichardWhy don't you buy it will put me up for a couple of days? So what's the problem? We already talked about the moth that flew out of his wallet. Ah, true. That is true. Hey, but I've been advertising pedalbiz.whatever uh elsewhere. Do I get a commission now of nothing? Yeah, you what is a commission of?
BrianYeah, 100% of all the proceeds from that.
RichardPedalbiz.whatever. You've now got to, just like I then had to immediately go out and register oliver effects.co.uk.
BrianI mean, you have to register pedalbiz.whatever. I've already registered pedalbiz.com. That's fine.
RichardNo, no.com's fine, Brian. You now need to register pedalbiz.whatever. That's right. That's your new URL. Uh-huh.
BrianOh well, yeah, that's um that's fantastic.
RichardSpeaking of the internet, we had a little bit of a moment in the Wumpler group chat. Yes. Me, Brian, and and Jake, where I realized that I could find some of the graphics that I designed for the first company I worked for in 1998. And I shared them with the boys. It was it was quite quite strange to look at what my work looked like nearly 30 years ago.
BrianAnd your flat your flash multimedia work, right? Yeah.
RichardOr is it uh Macromedia, wasn't it? Yeah, it was Macromedia Flash. This was pre-Macromedia Flash. I actually went through the rest of the website. There was a section in it, Bri, where I talked about, because I wrote all the copy, um, but I talked about um how the future of the internet might involve online shopping. I mean, this is Amazon.
BrianI I saw that.
RichardWow, and he's like, what a visionary I wasn't. But isn't it crazy to think of an internet without shopping? Like, what was the point? You should have started Amazon, damn it. I should, I should have done. Yeah, but I do remember when Google shares hit the market, it was the same time my company floated, and that was making me some money. And I was like, I don't need to buy these Google shares. That's the third worst financial decision I've ever made. What's like Google, anyways? That's stupid.
BlakeYeah, what are you gonna Google something?
RichardSecond worst financial decision I ever made was uh this guy who wants to send me some herbs by the post needs payment in this coin called Bitcoin. Should I buy one? Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Maybe I won't bother.
BlakeYeah, I remember hearing about Bitcoin really, really early. I don't even know how I heard about it, but it was it was way early. And I was like, that sounds stupid.
BrianYeah.
RichardThat'll never do anything.
BrianYeah. Uh-huh. I guess I'll buy a couple just just to see what happens, but who knows if I'll even keep it. Yeah.
RichardI'm gonna put them on this Western digital hard drive because that will never fail.
unknownRight.
BrianIt's guaranteed to last forever.
BlakeUh you know, not to segue too far, actually, this is for more for Patreon, but um, I I watched BlackBerry this weekend, which was uh quite interesting. It's about BlackBerry phones, and I was Oh, I've seen that as well.
BrianThat was a good that was a good movie.
BlakeI haven't seen the movie, is it good? It's yeah, yeah. RIM. It's it's very interesting. I mean, how accurate all that it's definitely a dramatization. Um but yeah, very interesting. And it just takes place around this time period, and it kind of like took me back to remembering like there's a clip of Oprah being like, it's a Blackberry, and everyone's freaking out. And I was like, I remember these moments actually. This is crazy.
RichardI think the last time I had to do anything like seriously like IT tech support related was in about I'm gonna say 2008, where I had to set an exchange server to also forward stuff to a Blackberry server as well. And I was like, okay, uh, all that is gone. I mean, again, that was one the wonderful thing about looking at my old work. So much has changed in the last 20-30 years. It's insane. Insane. Hey, why do you have any more guessbook signatures? You couldn't have signed it, Bri. It's on the Wayback Machine. But we were saying, right? We were saying we should put an old-fashioned guessbook on the Wampler website. I think that would be a great thing to do, Bri. I think we should make it in like really basic graphics.
BlakeYou are the 967th visitor.
RichardYeah.
BrianOh, and a visitor counter. That's right. We need a visitor counter. Right. Let's make it hidden page. Animated gif animated gifts, too. Whenever you're a view.
RichardThey've all got to be a view. They've all got to be you, but you're acting out classic gifts from the past, right? That's how it has to be. Like the dancing baby, but it is brick. Oh the dancing baby. Forgot about bad. But they are Brian. Yes. I think we need to do this. I think we need to make you know what we should do. We should have a retro mode for our website where if you act like that. Oh, that's fantastic. You gotta make that happen, man. I mean, I I'm willing to make it happen if you're willing to open the wallet in the further, good sir. Uh, actually, I think that is a really good idea. Hmm. Hmm.
BrianUh-huh. Yes. People might say, Well, you look like my other favorite pedal website.
RichardYes, indeed. Yeah, we might get accused of ripping ripping that off. We better be careful with that. Um so I had uh I had a a good gear weekend this weekend. Um, well, first of all, I had a band rehearsal Saturday morning. And remember, I've been telling you how I had been struggling with Mr. Brightside by the killers. Oh, yes. I flipping nailed it. You got it? I I well, I mean, strictly speaking, mathematically, I was only 80% technically perfect. And actually, mathematically, probably more like 75%. Because I skipped the odd note, okay, in the riff. But because I was playing it at speed, you could not notice. Like, I substituted other notes that were in the right kind of uh area, so we were all good. Uh, I nailed it and forgot everything else. I turned up and I like we were we played through that like three or four times. I was knackered by the end of that, and I was like, right now, just play this slightly easier. So I was like, Yeah, don't worry, boys. I've got this. Like, oh, I really do not have this, but um how could I possibly play basket case after this? Well, uh, we did have to play uh basket case. Um that hurt as well at the end. I was hurting, I'm not gonna lie. We've got to do Everlong now by the Foo Fighters, which has a drop D tuning, I think. Yep, uh, but apparently it's quite easy to play on the guitar, so uh I'm looking forward to it. It's not bad. A little tough, tougher on the drums. Yes. That's why we picked it, because the drummers got away with things, and the drummer's older than me, and it's time he was punished. It's time he has to work that hi-hat is what he's gonna have to do on that. Yeah, he's a great drummer. Uh so I um I was sent to quote unquote look after, and you can have it if you want it, but you'll pay for it, and I probably will now. A Synergy IR20 Bry. Uh, and it struck me, oh, I've also got a garage full of synergy modules. So I thought I would start trying out all the different synergy modules I had this weekend. I only got through three before I decided that there's only two that I want to play with, and the rest can go away. I don't want to hear them ever because they're so good. Um, I tried the Marshall JMP, it is wonderful. I like that one. I think you've got that one as well. I've got the JCM 800 module here as well. I haven't tried it yet. But I like that one too. Well, I was sent a video that was um the guitarist Um Steve Jones from The Sex Pistols, uh playing his JMP 800. And guess what? He's boosting it with, Bri. He's got a Tumness on there. And someone No way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Really? No, yeah, Steve Jones. I had no idea. That's pretty cool.
BrianThat's pretty cool, man.
RichardUh I was sent this video and they were like, um, what um what version of the Tumness is this? Because I need it because it sounds amazing. I was like, that's just the standard Tumness Mini. That's the vanilla awesome Tumness Mini. But yeah, right off the stuff. Yep. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols is indeed playing a Tumness. Uh, I think our um our friend Jason might have had something to do with that because he talked to him and said it was the pedal he needed. Yeah. But uh yeah, that was amazing to see. So I've got to try JC Amerhandle. Then I tried, I tried the uh the Morgan AC module, which is obviously like you know, Vox sort of voice. Not really for me. Uh like it did nothing.
BrianYou gotta you gotta like what a a Vox thing does without being in a cabinet, which is it's hard to get a Vox sound unless you have a Vox cabinet, I think, I think personally.
RichardOh, interesting, interesting.
BlakeSo and then they do it for me.
BrianThe Celestian blues, I think, are there typically in there? Is that right? Blues. I like greenbacks sometimes if I'm going a little dirtier. For clean, I like the celestial blues, yeah.
BlakeYeah, but I like the clean vox is an underrated sound, I think.
RichardYeah, so I mean, yeah, obviously, with the IR20, I have got the ability to change uh the IRs on it, so I could emulate that kind of blue speaks to them. I'd try that actually. Sure. Then I plug the um SLO2 module, the the second incarnation of their Soldano module in, right? You need to try one. I've got one. Yeah. Oh, it's glorious, and you can like really dial in your own crunch, your own overdrive, and obviously you've got a clean on there, and it is probably one of the best Soldano tones I've ever heard. Uh it helps. I'm playing for a Soldano 2x12 cab, so it's kind of it helps.
BrianI'm running it into a Sedano amp uh with a Sedano cab. Sounds just like Sedano, you know, it's just like and you know, my my chorus pedals, same thing. Sounds just like my Sedano.
BlakeIt's wild. I it's even better you run it into an SLO 100, you know?
RichardHonestly, though, boys, it was at that point I was like, okay, I've just got to accept it. I'm buying this and I'm buying these two modules because I don't think I can live without them now. That Marshall, though, is it it's a Marshall, like it's crazy. Love it. So if you're on the fence about any of the synergy gear, and this isn't an advert for synergy, even though we work with their parent company. Oh, good grief, it's great stuff.
BlakeI just had the exhibit meme pop in my head, like, yo, dog, we heard you like Soldano, so we put a Soldano in your Soldano, so you could Soldano while you Soldano.
RichardI I made Brian pose for that for the for the dual pantheon release. We we we made our own exhibit meme with Brian's face going, I heard you liked a pantheon, so we put a pantheon in your pantheon. I think I was ahead of my time with that one.
BlakeThat's good stuff. It is good. You know what's really funny? Those are that's an old meme at this point. That's like a vintage meme.
RichardYeah. Vintage meme. Now there's a good name for our band. Vintage meme. It's hard though, isn't it?
BlakeNaming a band. That is hard. I don't know if it's I don't know if naming a band or naming a podcast is harder at this point.
RichardNaming a podcast is easy.
BlakeNo, it isn't. Naming a yes, it is. No, it isn't. No, it isn't. Give me your subject and I'll give you the name. And then find one that's not taken. That is the tough part. That's harder.
RichardThat is harder. Just spell it with with less vowels. It's easily done. Um, so big news from Big Fender this week. Firstly, that they they didn't come off great. Bud Cole had an interview with Mary Spender. Um, and I he sweated a little bit in that interview, I'm gonna say not physically, but metaphorically. Uh she didn't uh she didn't pull punches with her questions. No, um, I quite liked her style as well. I was like, you need to demo pedals for us next. She's great. Um yeah, no, she is great, and that was really interesting, but it's clear that Fender are in damage limitation mode now. Um well, but you think yeah, um, but then they came out with the statement that they've solved single coil hum issues with a new breakthrough, um, which immediately made their noiseless pickups sound like they were never noiseless in the first place. But um now what this appears to be, Bries a secret metal plate under a uh pick guard that is doing some kind of hum cancelling.
BrianHasn't someone done this before?
RichardIt feels kind of like the sort of thing that has been done several times, but the big F may have done it better than everybody else. I guess it's one of those. Um so interesting. Yeah, I I kind of wanted to take, you know, your view on on that, Bri and Blake, whether uh let me see. It seems like firstly whether single coil hum was something that bothered you that much. Because I feel it bothers you more when you're practicing alone in your bedroom than when you're on.
BrianI think it depends like where you're like what venue you're at and how much gain you're using and all those kind of things. I mean, it definitely does cause issues. Um you know, I mean half the time if you're playing in some bar somewhere, do you really care? No, I don't care.
BlakeWell, I'm not, you know, it's like you're If you're stomping on a fuzz pedal, there's a good chance that even if your guitar is pretty quiet, you're gonna have some noise. You know?
BrianYou're gonna pick up radio stations if nothing else. That's probably likely as well. Yeah, that happens.
BlakeUh I don't know. I'll be uh I've never really cared that much, but I'm also not like gigging out. So rate of salt there. So like uh yeah, I get some noise here and there, and I'm just like it's fine. I just turn a different way and it mostly goes away. It goes away enough, you know?
BrianAnd I don't use an I don't use enough gain for it to really be a big problem with me personally. Yeah, me neither. I would do that. Yeah, even more than that. I mean like a little bit, but not as much as I used to when I when I was you know a kid. In the hair metal days. In the hair metal days, yeah.
BlakeIt's one of the it's just seems like one of those things that even if the guitar is really quiet itself, if you play with a lot of dirt, unless you're using a noise suppressor, there's just gonna be some. Right. It just is. Yeah.
BrianEspecially if you get like a coily cable. Welcome to Antenna World.
BlakeYeah, work for Hendrix.
RichardWork for me. I gotta say, Antenna World was the most disappointing part of Disney Orlando. Uh, out of all of the parts. That one just was not fun at all.
BlakeWas it better or worse than Waterworld featuring Kevin Costner?
RichardUh worse, significantly worse. Uh that one's coily, dad. Um, but we did by mistake discover the reason I got that. Remember, I said I played on a stage and I could not control the noise at all. Like I could only use a humbucker and you know, all of that sort of stuff. Um well, it turns out there's a hearing loop in the hall. Now, I don't know whether you guys have hearing loops out there. We talked about this on the paper. I had never even heard this term, Brian. You know what? A hearing loop is no idea. So basically, it's like a giant transducer that you switch on in a venue, and when people speak in their microphone, the hearing loop picks it up and amplifies it to hearing aids. So it's like a a room amplifier for hearing aids. Interesting, guess what? I had no idea. Your noisy single coil pickups will pick it up from another room. As we discovered when we were gigging or well practicing a few weeks ago, and we could hear, you know, Mabel, your car is here. Come through on my pickups. And at first we thought it was my radio gear, so we were like, turn the radio gear down, and it's like, it's we could still hear it, and it was my pickups. When I turned the volume down, it went. It was picking up the hearing loop, and I think that's what gave me the intense noise. So, all that's to say, I probably do want a noiseless fender, but is it gonna add weight? Because it looks like a a metal doohickey under a scratch board.
BrianIt shouldn't be that much weight, though. It shouldn't have it doesn't have to be that thick of a piece of metal. Yeah? So you think that's all it is? I mean, what else are you gonna do with something as simple as a so there's a picture of it here?
RichardIt looks like a giant pickup. Uh I mean, it's supposed to be a a secret, but there's a picture of it. I see.
BrianSo I I wonder if like the perfect person to ask would be Frank Falbo. We should get him on here.
RichardWe should get him on, especially as you disclose that he is more than just uh ampsmith, but also a guitar tech for someone rather famous. Yeah, absolutely. Yep.
BlakePassive battery-free system built into guitars. I mean, to me it looks like they've got a humbucker. I was gonna say it's probably like a pickup wired and out of the room. I mean, isn't this just a dummy coil? Isn't that all this is? Yours is the dummy coil. Like dummy coils have been a thing in what what what's interesting, I guess, about this is, and maybe there's other versions of this that I'm not aware of, but like dummy coils have been a thing in noiseless pickup design for a long time. Yeah, I see and if that's what this is, it just looks like you can add a dummy coil to any pickup situation, at least anyone that can fit. You're right, it does kind of look like that, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure that's what's going on. Which is not like it's not a bad solution, it's been but it's a solution that's been done. I guess I just don't know of one that's been uh designed to incorporate into existing pickups. I usually see it built into a pickup. Yeah.
RichardRight. But I think this is not designed to be incorporated with existing pickups. That's what it's suggests in the copy. Yeah, but I think it's designed to be factory installed with a guitar that uses whatever pickups you want. So you buy it from Vendor. Okay, let me put it another way. You're gonna need some special routing under your pick guard to fit one of these. It's hard to tell how big it is in the screen. Well, there's a picture at the top of the article where you can kind of see a fretboard, uh uh a guitar with the um pick guard taken off, and you can see the thing. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It is a big thing. It's like the size of a credit card. A bit bigger than a credit card. It's a lot more than a credit card. Um, it's bigger than a pickup.
BlakeIt's some slightly bigger than a humbucker, basically.
RichardYeah, it's like three humbuckers had a baby and fed him growth hormones. That's what it looks like. Ah, yes. Sure.
BlakeOkay, just me then. I don't think it's three humbuckers. I think it's like a humbucker plus 20%.
RichardOkay. Yeah.
BlakeBut you're right, it's bigger. I seen I was seeing it sit there on its on its own. Now I'm scrolling down, I can see it in a few different positions. Right. Yeah. It's interesting. But yeah, as far as I can tell, that's a dummy coil. You know who knows? Looks like a dummy coil. Sean Arbo would know what that is. Yeah. So Sean's gonna listen to this and he'll probably text me and say, Yep, that's a dummy coil. That's my prediction.
BrianSo apparently, yeah, apparently this has been done quite a bit among a lot of other guitar builders as well.
RichardYeah, but now Fender have done it, they're gonna sue everybody. So it's only Fender that can do it. Um reminds me, I sent another video on it. I don't know whether it was from Guitar Summit, but it was a sliding pickup. But what was nice about it is you could kind of join them together and make a humbucker, slide them apart, or slide the whole thing up and down a neck. That I enjoyed.
BlakeI assume it's connected via magnets or something. No, that wouldn't make any sense. How would that work?
RichardI I don't know. I think it was on some kind of like rail system, like it had like rails running through the sides of the pickups or something, and you could just move it about. I couldn't really see because I was watching it on my phone. I have a question.
BrianWhenever you're reading, you know, like in a guitar uh website, like guitar world or whatever, and you there's like a little section at the end to post your comments. Is that something that's interesting to you guys? Like, do you think I need to comment on this article?
RichardUh very rarely. No. Very rarely. I have done Bri. Like there have been uh I have done maybe once out of a million times of seeing one, but I've checked the comments more than ignored them, I would say. Like, I've read an article, gone that's stupid, and gone to the comments to go, and all these people are stupid too.
BrianThat yeah, yeah, that's that's kind of where I land. Why? Where's your mind at here, Brian? Are you thinking um I'm I'm not naming anything?
BlakeI'm just saying he wants to put the comment section on your blog articles. That's what he's saying. Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.
RichardNo, we do already have like on the Wumpler website, and actually, one of our opinions.
BrianLots of people angry. Why are people so mad? Stop stop being so mad.
BlakeI just don't want to give anyone any more access to giving me their opinion than I already have, okay?
RichardUh what's good though on the Wampla website, it tends to be more technical. So we've got a blog about how to build an overdrive, and as a deliberate error, Brian misnumbered something or turned something round, and we've had to continually go, no, actually, it should be that way, or and then we change the article. But what's been nice is a lot of people have come into that article and been like, I built this, this doesn't work, and then like somebody else has come in and gone, oh yeah, I made the same mistake, what you've done is this, and it kind of becomes a two-way learning forum at that point, and that I don't mind. Like if it's like doing something useful, other than just going, Yes, Brian is a doofus, yes, Brian is a doofus, then I'm fine with it. But if it as you say, if it's just negativity, what if it's not something like uh your mom?
BrianYou're right. Yeah, I mean, a thing you can do if you want to get a lot of people commenting is make a mistake in something like that and let people correct you over and over. Yeah, yeah, it's a lot traffic.
RichardUh and and again, you know, like just just a simple spelling mistake is all it takes, Brian doesn't even have to be.
BlakeYou know what's really awesome. Or a bad opinion, just a bad take. Correct you, but they're actually wrong. That's always fun.
RichardUh yeah, I I'm guilty of doing that a lot.
BrianI I like correcting people's spelling, and then my spelling of their correction is wrong. That's what I like to do.
BlakeYeah. That's the wrong your. That's the wrong your. I'm not gonna even take your advice about anything because you didn't know there's an apostrophe in there.
BrianRight. There's there's an H in your stupid. You know?
RichardDo you know what's really annoying, Bri, is when I find myself writing on like Reddit like earlier today, and I spelt labor without the U. Because I was in I'm writing about pedals, I use American spellings mode, and my brain now just defaults to American spellings when I'm writing on the internet. I mean, correct. I blame you, Brian. Yeah.
BrianSo you've been using that Zeke, that Zeke didn't used to get used at all, but now, man, Ziki's getting worn down.
RichardI mean, I I remember the first time Brian chided me for he's like, you know, in this country we we spell that like this, and we don't know. We spell things the right way, exactly. And yeah, I mean the number of things that like there are subtle things like date formats. Like we know in this country that you guys put your date format round a different way than us, but I didn't realize that there was like a particular way of sort of saying dates that like Americans would look at and go, What is what the hell is this guy talking about? Brian has schooled me many times. I got a bug attacking me.
BlakeGet out of here.
BrianOh, I thought I was just getting really in there. What now?
RichardA bug or bug attacking you.
BrianA bug attacking me, yes.
RichardOkay, all right. Sounded completely different. All right, boys. But you know what isn't gonna be attacking you right now, Blake?
BlakeUh, our wonderful chasing tone executive producers.
