SPEAKER_03

Uh so I have my man here from the DMV and ask people uh we kind of go through and you know talk to him about some things he's got going on. Uh I want everybody to get in tune to what he's doing and you know support him, uh be a part of every his uh musical journey, journey as well as some of the community service uh activities he has going on as well. So we're gonna start off, you know, um, you know, what are your what are some of your musical uh influences growing up?

SPEAKER_02

Musical influences, yes. Um man, that's a wide range.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, well, I would say uh D'Angelo, Johnny Hathaway, Steve Wanda, uh Bob Marley, Tosh, um Boys Men, Jodice, uh Roy Ayers, uh Yeah, especially List there, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm about to say, like, but I'm on the other part, I mean, you know, I'm an artist, so I had a lot, a lot of different influences, you know, that I I pulled from. Because I I grew up in a household where um where uh you know my parents were were also artists.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So like we I grew up with you know, I got like endless vinyl even now, but I still have, you know, my pops we transitioned in 05. But um, you know, I I have like tons of vinyl from his collection and something that I've collected on myself uh as well. But I grew up listening to so many different, you know, ranges of art, you know, from jazz to hip hop to classical to RB to gospel to fusion to break age, is my my mom's side of the family is from the islands. So that that's where you hear a lot of the islands play with and and I go into my basketball bag, that's where that comes from. So I I grew up listening to all of that, you know, Pan African music, brain, all all of those different elements uh part of what makes up, you know, soul, you know, I see Hayes, you know what I'm saying, all of that, you know, then of course and it's a hip hop artist that I love growing up, you know, from uh Child Car Bus, NWA, Starface, Beauty Mob, you know, uh Howard Glipics, uh Tupac. I mean, you know, you can I can keep going down the list.

SPEAKER_03

I like it. I like it. Hey, hey man, you got you got some uh some heavy hitters there, so I like that. So, like, I mean, like, so what was your first song uh you recorded and released, and uh what uh was the outcome of that?

SPEAKER_02

Uh my very first song that I recorded and released, um, it was a song called Luxury. Well, let me say this. I recorded what a lot of other artists, you know, in the area and you know, the DC D and B area and people overseas out of town. So, like, you probably if you was to type in my name, you would see like a bunch of stuff for a lot of different people that fires to me as my own, you know, as a as a solo artist. My own work, the very first song that I recorded um was a song called Luxerius Ruxman. It's a song that I actually uh wrote for my wife, shout out to my queen of beautiful. You know what I'm saying? Uh shout out to the babies, uh uh my beautiful younger dog children now, they ain't babies.

SPEAKER_03

They always they always are babies though.

SPEAKER_02

They always are babies, they got three of them. I got a son and two daughters, like um basically it was a uh a song that I wanted to write to express how I felt about her. You know what I mean? You know, I I had written, and like I said, and we worked in collab in terms of other people. So I got music that was out there before it as far as you know working with other artists. Um I recorded a song called Vapors also that I released right back in 2013, but that was um me featured as the punk man with a band I um me and my uh uh homies from college uh put together called uh The Last Elephant.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

But my first actual solo artist recording work song called Luxerious Run. Wrote it for my wife, you know. Uh shout out to the homie, uh my bruh my brush in uh Choppy Choppy Sound. He actually produced the beatback and I wrote the song. You know, he was like, yo, this you don't sound like cute. So I was like, yeah, let me check it. You know what I mean? Then uh, interestingly enough, when I went to record the song, my wife actually sat with me in the studio at the time. Um actually doing a video for it, you know, put it out. Got a lot of great responses from it, you know, and uh currently actually uh I got requests uh from some folks in the radio stations that you know that I got connected with my label, you know. Shout out to uh Tom Butter, CEO of my label, uh Real Business Music. Shout out to the whole Real Business Music channel, by the way. You know, um but um and it's actually been in heavy rotation and won a couple of awards.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um so yeah, man, the song's done well over the last you know, two, three years since I put it out. And uh and it's it made a whole nother like spin the block resurgence, you know, what I got connected within this and they tapped me in with some other radio stations, podcasts, you know, interviews that I did on the song as well, you know the uh great turnout, you know. Basically the song uh it it described I call it luxurious but it kind of describes the whole vibe that my wife has. Like luxurious because she's you know classic, she's fly, but at the same time, she's fun, beautiful, and you know, the rugby part, I don't know, you know, for some of y'all, you might be probably older than I don't know if you remember the uh teddy bear, Teddy Ruxpin.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so my wife has her eyes, she has beautiful eyes, but she has eyes and like her her smile is real big and bright. So it reminded me of the Teddy Rux thing, but the luxurious part describes her like the you know, the other qualities she has from her classic as a woman. So I don't know, it's just it was just like a fun way of expressing the different, you know, aspects of how I observe her because you know, I also as an artist, outside of the music, I also draw. So like I drew her one day, and I was just really, you know, tune to the details of the features or you know, her lips, her eyes, her all of that. So yeah, man. You know, if you if y'all get a chance, uh check out uh video for that, man. It became all great.

SPEAKER_03

Alright.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, uh so yeah, you know, that's that by the very first time I was working with solo artists.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so uh I see that you uh you you talk uh really well about your your wife. Uh I if you don't mind, I'd like to give a shout out to to my lady decor Stevens. Uh she's, you know, just like you, your wife has been a support to me as well. Um so I just want to know if you with you having your wife that's the support, how does that help you like uh grow like your music, you know, and all that?

SPEAKER_02

Um, you know, it's it's it's great because, you know, words to that song that that I just spoke about, you know, I have tons of songs that I have written and stuff that I've recorded with people, you know, and I've also had the pleasure over the years, you know, working as an artist and a musician, you know, and a producer and all of that, um, abduction tours and, you know, a lot of different things. So of course, you know, before I I met my queen, you know, just being in my artist bag, I just always thought one of those other songs I was gonna record and put out first. But when I I really had the opportunity to really kind of stretch out and start doing my thing as a solo artist, the very first song that, you know, was appealing to me to even record and write, you know, write, record, and put out at the time was that, because it was around the time we were buried already, you know, by that point when I, you know, dropped that song. But she's just my wife in a lot of ways, you know, has been an inspiration in terms of things that I've written. You know, um, of course, first, you know, the most high the creator, you know, is is my first inspiration for me. Uh but right next to that, her and my kids, like, you know, having someone to connect with and bounce sometimes bounce your ideas off of, you know, things that she might have said. Well, I think we should try this, let's try that. You know, mind you, of course I can write and produce all of that without her having to be involved, but it it gives me a different type of passion for how I approach my art, especially when it's right about love.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Like material is luxe, but it's about love. So, you know, it's it's just a it's a soul, you know, cool hip-hop, you know, or reggae type way of expressing love. And then there's other songs that I've written, you know, and so having a wife, you know, having God and having a wife and children that ground you. Because, you know, me before I was married was a whole different me. Right. You know what I mean? You know, and me before God was a whole different me. But um, but um definitely, you know, my wife, uh even sometimes why, you know, just I'm I'm I'm almost pushed, I'm pushing almost 50, 47. Okay. So when you've been doing the music industry and business as long as I have, sometimes you go through, even though I've accomplished none a lot. Yeah, you know, you go through periods where you're like, what's still gonna do this? Worth it, am I even driving the same fire? There's been times where, you know, just observing the art that is my wife and you be like, oh, I'm gonna write about this.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, so yeah, that that's where the creative first point came from.

SPEAKER_03

But I I like that.

SPEAKER_02

She gave me a focal point to be excited about my art at a time where I was like, yeah, I don't know, I might have it up. I might just teach, because I also teach you know, arts education. So me having her in my life at the time when I dropped, broke and dropped Jerry's weapons, and gave me a whole nother fire of wages when even, you know, like burst out with something new.

SPEAKER_03

I like I like that. I like that. Um and so like you talked about the music industry. Uh like what would be your advice for like up and coming indie artists that's trying to get heard or, you know, from promoted or just get their music out there so that people can be like, you know, get in tune of what they're what they're bringing to the table.

SPEAKER_02

Um well, I'm gonna say it like this. I can sit over here and give people a whole bunch of marketing strategies to do this, post these many times a day, say this in your art, package it this way, package it that way. But I'm gonna tell you at this point in my career, where I'm at now, I just listen to the most high. Now, you know, everybody's belief system and what they ascribe to is different. But for me, listening to the spirit of the of the most high is what inspires me and gives me straight. Like this things that we do, you know, me and you know, all the other artists represent this the way we run our through our labor, there's things that we do and the way we market and how we do certain things that goes totally against everything they'll tell you to do, how it should be done. Because we're listening to creative, listening to spirit. And then we talk about it, convene after we, you know, meditate, break, you know, have a meeting, discuss things. And of course, you know, we discuss metrics and all of that. But really, the cheat code, if you will, the playing card, you know, putting any of our space players out there, you know, the game when it is you listening to God, this ain't everything you need to know. Even when it don't make sense to your natural mind, you know, if it don't fit all the different metrics, be true to listening to God and how he made you. Don't try to fit a particular mode just because somebody says it's hot. You know, these days we got enough artists sounding like each other. We got enough artists all trying to follow the same script. And, you know, the thing that makes you stand out above the rest is being who he made you to be. Authentic. And the people who rock him with that, they'll gravitate towards the natural. He knows who he wants to hear your heart. That's why he gave you the gift. That's why he's motive to give. Tap in with God and follow the instructions he gives you.

SPEAKER_03

Uh and be your authentic self. Can't lose that way. Amen. Uh, so I I hear you talk about your uh your your uh beliefs uh the all high, with the most high. Um so um what significant part does that play in in just not your music but in your everyday life?

SPEAKER_02

Man, for me to eat God is everything. You know, I done I've done life without God. I done done being outside, doing outside things. You know, I've done, you know, the partying, the smoking, the drinking, the clubbing, the hustling, the all of that. I done done being an artist, you know, was full of my own ego like, you know, because I was fly, I had swag and I know how to speak. That's why I can say certain things to make the ladies eat. All that I've lived all of that, right? Me at this point of my life, not everything. He grounds my everyday, he grounds my peace of mind, you know what I'm saying.

unknown

Who I would call the holy shalom, you know what I'm saying? He grounds my ability to have vision and clarity.

SPEAKER_02

He he has taught me how to love my wife and my children better just by listening to him, just by, you know, following his example, his teachings, his, you know, his spirit. He keeps me at peace with, you know, who I've chosen to be, even when sometimes it's it's unpopular to his status quo. Like, you know, he gives me practical wisdom and strategies, you know, how to organize and orchestrate and, you know, pursue things in a way that will not only keep me grounded but get me in doorways that might get to my town at home and not.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Even with all of my skills that there's things in my skill set to get me in the door, but the the most high keeps me grounded and keeps me having having, you know, has molded a a character, the character within me that not only gets me in the door, but allows me to stay in it. Right. Because you can get in the door with gifts, but you can walk your way out of the door for a character.

SPEAKER_03

Say say that again. They they they need to hear.

SPEAKER_02

You can your gifts can make room for you in many different rooms and in many different tables. But your character is what allows you to stay in the room and advance and expand and multiply what you would give. Character that you walk right out of a doorway that God opens up. Right. Poor character. Never gonna that's why we you know there's different artists that you see who are super talented, but depending on how they moving and how they living, and how and what they tap into or what they pull from as their inspiration. You might see them in, you know, in a different position that might walk them out of some room.

SPEAKER_03

I like that. Uh you you're talking some good stuff. Uh I I'm I'm glad for this interview that we have it. Uh I also want to know what what inspired your name? Like uh, where'd you get the name, your, your, your artist's name from?

SPEAKER_02

God gave it to me in the journey. Okay. Right up. Now, on the the less SOK in the deep inside of it, the R and the E at the beginning of my name, it's it's part of the uh the letters that are in my middle name.

unknown

You know, as far as my uh my government. You know, because Renaz Peoples is not my government name.

SPEAKER_02

That's my that's my stage name. But the R and the E comes from the first two letters of my middle name. Now the whole name, Ray Naz Peoples, that's where the dream came from. It's the acronym that stands for Billigan. The R and the E is Billy and it's naked truth. First A is above, second A, all C is Zions, with apostrophe as Zions, peoples. So basically way of saying speaking the truth of power and like, you know, um powering, you know, all the people who are under God. Ready now as people sound it sound the way you say it, it sounds like a thing. But but it actually has meaning to it. He literally gave it to me in a dream one time, and then I wrote it down.

SPEAKER_03

Hey, hey man, you you dropped some good stuff today, man. Um uh I I want to know, uh, because just listening to you today of how you uh you talk about like, you know, family, your music, uh I guess what message do you want to give to your listeners uh about like the what to take from your music, what they hear?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, the way to kind of quantify that is even what my um what my um my my more my most recent project that I got out, you know, uh well I'll say the singles are out, the full album is dropping, you know, and probably about maybe spring by by next month, I believe, dropping the full album.

unknown

That's gumbo for the soul.

SPEAKER_02

So I'm a gumbo soul artist, so you know the three main components that I kind of pull from, of course, other flavors, like I said, I have a wide range of what I'm into. But hip hop, soul, and red. And so um the gumbo part is basically, you know, when you make gumbo, you know, you add a lot of different ingredients that you put in too in the pot. That you're like in the cooking or and then the soul part is that everything I do. So but the the message and the uh empowerment and the love and the light and the revolution, you know, love, uh and revolution and revelation and knowledge, wisdom, understanding, reality, uh strength, power, authority, you know, hope, you know, all of these elements are part of what I bring in my music. You know, like I said, it's gumbo for the soul, it's good food for the soul. Yeah. You know, whether you're having a good day, whether you're having a bad day, whether you you know, you're having a a a a intensive day when you're self-reflecting, when you're looking at the state of the world, you're just thinking about your grind, thinking about love, you're thinking about, you know, or you know, whatever you try to accomplish with life, or you trying to make sense out of, you know, either your own growth and identity as a person, or you know, searching for purpose, you know, and wisdom, you know, all of that comes from the spirit of the most high, and then he just gives it to me on how to stir it up in the pot.

unknown

Give it to the people.

SPEAKER_03

Go on, come get you a bowl. Yeah, yeah, you got you got that. good food out there. I've listened to a uh a couple couple of uh your songs and I you know I like to eat you know I I'm loving what I'm what I'm what I'm hearing. Um I appreciate it good thanks. Uh so I uh I know you have a song you you did with it uh with Tone Butter It's Our Time. Uh yeah that's what's it what's the story behind that one?

SPEAKER_02

Okay so I It's our time is actually off of a joint album project. Me and Tone dropped um probably um we started dropping some of the singles um maybe in I wanna say the last spring to kind of get people ready for it and then in the summertime we started banging with the whole album. You know um then we got a couple other songs that we released you know probably top of top of the year. But um Blood Brothers album you know reflection of the culture here and the in the uh as far as style and the vibe but it's our time and the whole album really is is it's a uh go-go and and hip hop music type album you know you know here in DC you know go-go and hip hop and soul is real heavy you know um funk we love the funk we love live music you know um I actually produced that track for that as well in addition to to us writing the song together being tone um I produced the the tracks of the music you know you hear and it it's me playing all the instruments doing me whole night also I'm a musician as well as uh as as a as an artist so um and it basically that song was is just you know as I talked about uh us being me and so haven't been in the music industry for well over 20 years at this point you know when you go to reflecting where you are at different points in life find new meaning in every wave of growth and maturity and all that so it's our time just basically reflecting you know a promise that we got from the most high that even though we've been doing it as long as we have that this this wave of our career is our time where you know if you didn't know about us before you're gonna know about us. Sure will you know it's all about it's all about the timing of of when God wants to present you and fool and to the world for his purpose.

SPEAKER_03

You know he did. I got you uh so you say you you play uh you you you play instruments so what what instruments do you do you do you play?

SPEAKER_02

I play keys but my first instrument is my vocals because you know in addition to me rapping and doing a patois, you know the chant, you know I'm a singer. You know what I mean? So that's why a lot of my my uh songs you hear soul vocals, that's me singing all of that. Except for if I have like my wife or my sister had a G or somebody featured on there with me. But most of the vocals you hear the backgrounds, you know, or even my my daughters daughters have also been on a couple of tracks and things that I've done on on different projects too. But um all of the all of the singing vocals you know when you hear the harmonies and you know different little stuff and then of course being thrown whenever we collab together we both do at least you know go back and forth just like how you would if you were in a bag you know but um but uh I would say uh vocals I play piano I play synthesizers I also play drum to percussion you know um I'm playing some guitar I'm a little rusty on my cut guitar I ain't gonna hold you because I I haven't picked it up in a while but I definitely don't know what to do as far as where the chords are and how to trump you know I mean gotcha I'm more I would say I'm more of a rhythm guitar than uh a a lead guitarist but I do know my way around with the instrument um but my primary instruments definitely bulb both keys synthesizes piano drums.

SPEAKER_03

Okay alright so we got we got another drummer in the room alright like that um so my question for you is what makes you different from any artist that's in the DMV locally international what sets you apart from everybody else I would say what sets me apart is him him meaning the creator.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_02

I mean I could say well you know because I'm a melting part I mean you already know that though and I'm not the only artist that also seems to and raps or and plays instruments. There's other artists that can't do that. But what sets me apart is I mean the way he made me and I I listen to his spirit on how to share what I have to offer to the world. And if it resonates with you, you're gonna rock with it. If it don't that's okay too because the people he intended for me to bring what I bring to and draw to every time.

SPEAKER_03

I like that I like that what what would your fans out there uh that what is it that they don't know about you that that they would be surprised um I was saying that outside of when I'm presenting myself to the world I'm a very private person like people met me in person because I'm kind of like you know real animating and extroverted and I got all these different places and I'm doing the bachelor and I'm talking and I'm yeah and I'm having a conversation they probably think that I'm super extroverted all the time and I'm actually very proud real.

SPEAKER_02

Okay I don't really like a whole lot of people I don't have a large circle like I know a lot of people as far as my friend circles but my friends very small. Yeah same here so some people might not know that about me people who are close with it will say no.

SPEAKER_03

But to the outside world because there's so much of a robustness in the way that I present my heart they probably would never really think that I'm as private you know like when I retreat away from all the noise I'm at the cut right I feel you on that same way uh like you know I I I I keep my um my little circle I got uh and just we just keep keep them keep them close um got my family my daughter um and just you know just do the music with people that you know I trust and and been working with that I know that they're not gonna either lead you astray or you know so uh I appreciate appreciate that as well um and also appreciate just just meeting meeting y'all um and just seeing what y'all y'all are doing because uh y'all do even though you're doing the music part you're still doing the community service part as well uh so that that's that's a big thing that you know that just looking at y'all this just to say hey you can't do it both uh but it's just your your motives just gotta be right.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely man that's another part of what keeps us going is that the art is not just about us. We all about empowerment. We all about enlightenment we all about you know there's things that both me and Tom you know as far as our stories and you know I'll show I I'll let him tell more of his story you know when he gets you know taps in but both of us have done and said things in our past that could have had us dead or locked up. Right and because you know most I had a different friend that wasn't our our faith and you know that that's not what where path that we get up even though we were heading that direction at some point you know we were able to to find that new purpose of meaningful living and you know that sitting around family and that sitting around empowering the community and and bringing you know love and life and positivity and truth and we're both as you know we're all advocates everybody in my squad all them all the kings in my squad you know kings as far as men all the kings in my squad are are advocates for the community you know we go in some of the same neighborhoods you know and places that where we you know was our stop the ground and and you know bring the the the positive reflection and direction that we get from the most high in the community and serving in the community doing things for people because our people need hope. Our people need direction especially kids you know I mean we got youngers out here dropping an alarm and rate right who need direction and guidance. We hope just like we do.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_01

Beat beat radio. Can we come in here with the sounds of put it down? All the way up sound. We got real business in the mood those bulky. And you're not missing the sounds up. We want to die with the cast, we don't stop.

SPEAKER_04

We can make it and take it to higher height.

unknown

We just embrace it. Then we will die. Come on, God, we can make it and take it. To higher height, we just embrace it. Then we will die.

SPEAKER_00

Truth pizza love and music, you know. And live it. Now it's a um there's a while going on. Death is trying.

SPEAKER_01

Oh these souls are running away.

SPEAKER_06

There's no actions, it's no action, souls running, no interaction with the higher power. We in the final hour, no marriage is baby showers. They only get it there, flowers. Don't respect their mama, but they let it take some powers from God. My life, the ground, wrinkled up the work. Don't be nice, only me and God. Starting at the ceiling, had to put on my temp job. Get up from my feeling this door. Like you got who side you are? Who you riding for? You ain't migrant. I'm your tallin up. I'm your tallin up. God, your pain relief. Don't go down in the fire with the number leaf.

SPEAKER_01

So many stories are cold, it's wide road.

unknown

So many stories untold when the cat is holding. And that's what my friend is old, which got the toe. Come out the wood. Oh, so the kitchen goes. Gotta like this gold. Rush up the car, yeah. It's like a shooting show. Gotta act like the road. The wood is on the sort, it proceeds the most. So we consume like the good spirit well.
