SPEAKER_00How's your day going?
SPEAKER_01Uh, very busy. Um trying to get things ready for my birthday next weekend.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Uh what you got planned?
SPEAKER_01Um, so I'm having a uh birthday dinner and then I'm going to LA the 23rd.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. Sounds like fun.
SPEAKER_01Should be, hopefully. Hopefully.
SPEAKER_00All right. Um, so I appreciate you uh taking your time out to uh interview with me. Uh we have here Jasmine Renee uh from the A coming through uh Pusha Radio uh to grant us with this interview. So uh we're just gonna start off, you know, um talk about where you're from, um what environment influenced you to get into music, and you know, we we're gonna start from there.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so I was born in Boston, um, but I moved, my parents moved my sister and I here in Atlanta when I was five. So I just say I'm from Atlanta. Um how I start, my dad was basically in like a singing group with him and some of my uncles. Um, so they didn't finish or go anywhere with it. So then I kind of took over and I got interested in music. I started in the choir. Um, I was in chorus all four years of high school, um, been doing it like for real seriously since like 2015. So been a minute.
SPEAKER_00All right. Oh, okay. So you got a nice little extensive uh uh music uh journey. Um, who was your biggest influences uh to get you into the game?
SPEAKER_01Um so according to my dad, he said that when I was little, I used to always ask to hear um Remember the Time by Michael Jackson?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I always played that. And then I also ventured off to pop and I loved Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera. Then Ashanti, Beyonce. Now my favorite artist right now is in between Leon Thomas and uh Jasmine Sullivan.
SPEAKER_00All right, all right. Those those those some good ones. Uh so uh I'm gonna ask you like what's your favorite uh Jasmine Sullivan song?
SPEAKER_01Um it's called Excuse Me. That's my favorite Jasmine song. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All right, all right, that's cool. I like that. Um, have you uh experiences and um like what would be your experiences or challenges as you've been an indie artist?
SPEAKER_01Uh there's several. Uh the money that it takes, um, the time that it takes, because when you're doing this as an independent artist, you gotta be really, really consistent. Um and it takes a lot of money, it takes a lot of commitment. Um, when you're by yourself, you gotta push it as hard as you can because you're trying to get attention of the whole world basically by yourself. Um being a female independent artist is very hard too because you never know who is, you know, seriously trying to work with you or you Yeah, I I I got yeah, so it's hard to determine. You just you don't know who's genuine and who's not.
SPEAKER_00So So when you when you say that, like uh so how do you know who is genuinely that you can a you're able to work with and who you just like I don't know?
SPEAKER_01The problem is you don't really know. Um, you kind of have to step out and take the risk. Sometimes I don't even take the risk, sometimes I just say no. But then there are times when I mess around and find out and it's a good thing, and then sometimes it's a bad thing. There there are people though that have been really genuinely wanting to help me, which is a great thing.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um but then there are some you can tell right off the bat that they're not really talking about anything serious.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, yeah, I I got you, I got you on that. Um I know sometimes that can get real discouraging. Um, I'm I'm a drummer, so uh I have a band, so it's like we've we've dealt with some people that were um they were serious, some of them wasn't, some of them you know wanted to play around with the money, and so we kind of like got to a point like you know, we pick and choose who we who we'll play for or or deal with because it's just it's a cutthroat league out here, so it is, it's a lot so yeah. So um I guess what motivated you to become a uh a singer, a um I see that you model. Uh what made you uh become to do that?
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean, passion, I mean, my passion has always been music. Um, I just that's what I grew up with, or all around me. Um, and I just I don't know, I just when you grow up with music, your ears are different and you have an ear for certain things. And my music is kind of like my escape. I'm not really good at talking about my feelings, so I kind of write it down, put it on my music. Uh, one of my favorite songs is called Priority that I put out, and that's like my way of speaking about a particular situation that I will never, well, I won't say never, but that I don't really like to talk about in person. So I just sing through it.
SPEAKER_00Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with that. Um sometimes that's the the playing music, doing your own thing is usually uh medicine and healing for the soul. Sometimes people don't understand it as artists. They feel like because you're out here, you smiling, you it looks good on Instagram, Facebook, but like people don't really know what as an artist goes through, you know.
SPEAKER_01Right, exactly. They're annoying.
SPEAKER_00So uh so have you ever been in a situation where people have said, hey, like I want it, I want to, you know, book you, and and then it's like you like get that feeling, like, nah. And what like because I know like as as musicians, we can't, it's hard for us to say no.
SPEAKER_01There have. Um, but the way that I kind of I like to play along sometimes and I ask a lot of questions. And luckily now I have my manager because he's been such a big help. Whereas before I was doing everything on my own.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_01Sometimes like I might have missed out on opportunities because I've been so skeptical. Um, but yeah, I asked a lot of questions. And then when the questions, the answers start getting sketchy, then I just leave it alone, stop responding.
SPEAKER_00All right. So let's talk talk about like your your uh modeling uh journey. So what brought that on?
SPEAKER_01Um, so I'm I don't know if I'm really well when I was younger, I guess I wouldn't be able to be the typical model, five foot three. Um, I have the thicker bill, but I'm not the typical skinny, tall model. So I didn't really start out as that, but I've always loved taking pictures. Um, my photographer Antoine Stevenson, we do a photo shoot at least two or three times a year. Okay. So yeah, because like I don't know, I just always love taking pictures. And I've started, I'm now gonna be in a fashion show in May. So we've done rehearsals for that. So I want to do pretty much everything. Um, modeling, acting, singing, everything.
SPEAKER_00All right, I like that. Um, could I also seen that um I like that you're manifesting uh winning a Grammy? Uh so um tell tell tell me, uh, were you at the at this at the show or were you just, you know?
SPEAKER_01I wish. Next year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01No, all right, I'm there. I wasn't there, I haven't been yet.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yeah, because you uh uh from what I've heard, you got you got some good music out there. So um like I I see what you're doing, and you're you're you know, pushing your way, you you're making, you know, ways meet, you're you're consistently doing your thing. You know, a lot of um independent artists kind of like don't sometimes they um look for other people to do it. So um what would be your advice to a a startup indie artist that's trying to get their stuff out there and get the disposal they need?
SPEAKER_01Um it's very cliche and everybody says it, but the key is to keep going. Um you have to stay consistent. I took a three-year hiatus. Um, I kind of regret it, but it was much needed um because I I needed that to get back to my passion and to get that fire back. Sometimes you just need to take a break, and that's okay, but um just make sure it's not a three-year-old because you never know who's watching. I keep like Thursday, I'll do a uh throwback Thursday, and every week it's a new person that hasn't seen it and um likes it and comments. So yeah, just stay consistent.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh, could I see you also you're doing a uh slide something uh challenge? So how's that how's that going? Have you have you found some unique people or you find some people that like I don't know?
SPEAKER_01We waiting. There's a band that uh they sent me a snippet of what they're working on, so I'm excited to see that. Um, but there's only a week left. The 22nd is the deadline. So this will see.
SPEAKER_00All right, so I'm gonna let you, I'm gonna let you uh, you know, uh do your thing and and you know tell people what you what you're looking for, uh so that they so that you get the right uh energy and vibes that you would that you need.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so it's for my new single called Slide Something, and it's out on all platforms. And basically I did the same things for my single Green Light, just a cover, any cover. Um, if you want to do a skit, and slide something is like a skating song. So if you want to skate to it, come up with a dance, would uh come up with a line dance, anything you want to do um with the song. I also have the instrumental and I also have the a cappella. So if anybody needs that, just hit me up and I can send it to you. And yeah, so the winner will get um$200.
SPEAKER_00So okay. All right, so uh my serious people out there, you know, tap in, um, do what you gotta do to get that to get that bread up, you know. So we gonna, if they if they want it, it's right there. So you're giving them an opportunity. So if y'all want it, y'all can't say that y'all ain't get it. So um, you know, so tell tell me about your um your your latest release and and your projects that you're working on.
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, so slide something is the latest one that came out in November last year. Um we are in discussion of a video. We have I have the treatment and everything, just gotta get the locations, the timing, and all that. Um, but in the meantime, I'll be dropping new music soon. Like I said, I'm into acting. So there should be, we just wrapped that up, I think the end of last year. So that should be done soon. Um, so yeah, I'm doing pretty much everything. My fashion show that I'm in, that's May the 3rd. Um, as soon as I figure out where that's gonna be, then I'll start promoting that as well.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. Uh when you start doing that, please tag me in there so I can I can uh show my support and love for uh what you're doing as well.
SPEAKER_01I will. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00So uh create a process process, like what gave you the idea for you know, just your projects, your songs, you know, anything that you're working on?
SPEAKER_01Um, well, slide something, like I said, I took three years off. Um, so slide something. When I came back, I was like, I need something up tempo. Um, the world has been going through a lot, so we don't need no sad stuff right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I definitely agree.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so we need some dance music. And then like I'm from Atlanta, so you know, our biggest skating recur is Cascade, and that's like a big uh staple here in Atlanta. So I was like, let's come up with like a skate joint, something like with the 80s, 90s vibe. And um, yeah, so I just wanted something fun. And yeah, so that's what I'm trying to work on right now. Just some fun stuff for now.
SPEAKER_00So if you had some collaborations, uh, since you out there in the A, who would be your top top five if you could work with someone?
SPEAKER_01Well, Leon Thomas is not here, but he's number one for sure.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha.
SPEAKER_01Um uh from the A? Um I've always wanted to work with Missy, but she's not from here either. Um, but I definitely she's number two. I'd say Sierra. I love Sierra, definitely Jazzy Fay. Um I know it will never happen, but Andre 3000, I know he's done, but you never know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I meant, I mean, look, look, I I'm I'm one of the ones like I see you manifesting Grammys, so a Andre Tree Jaden. If you out there, hey yo, look her up. She got that, she got that fire that she brings into y'all. So, you know. So uh how do you like because I I see that you do a lot on um on social media, you know, you you stay consistent, you you focus, you don't uh I don't see you like I hear in it do like in the limelight. You you kind of like stay quiet with what you're doing. Like what makes you um who you are with with doing that as well.
SPEAKER_01Um I just like to be not I don't even want to say different, I'm just myself, and I'm not the type to um kind of be all out there. I kind of just let my artistry speak for itself. So I just kind of do what I'm supposed to do and promote it. And whoever listens to it, listens to it, whoever don't don't, because you can't please everybody. So I just try to be myself. That's all.
SPEAKER_00I like I like that. Um so um pretty much have you been in situations where people have like commented and just say, hey, I don't, I don't know about that, or have you ever got discouraged by just you know being on there and like you put out something new and people just you know not responding like you would you would like. How do you deal with that?
SPEAKER_01As far as comments, I don't really get negative comments, but sometimes I don't know if it's the algorithm lately, but like sometimes it's not as active as I would like it to be.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_01Um, so that's why I try to post as much as I can, but it can get discouraging. I'm not gonna lie, it can, but um I don't know what it is. You just have to, like I said, you just have to keep going because like I said, some people will see it and some people don't. And I'll post the same thing over and over and over and I'll get like a different reaction every time. So you just never know who's watching.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, true. Uh I I feel the same way. Um talk to a lot of artists and they pretty much say the same thing, like, you know, the aggregate algorithm is just just different. Like, you know, so I I see people that that get a million likes for crazy stuff, and then people who are out here doing something that's that's that's real, then it's like 20 20 likes. So it's like, you know, so I so I always ask people like, what is it? Do do you get discouraged by that or uh or is it like do you feel like giving up or quitting because of stuff like that happens? But you seem like you're not that that that type of person, you still keep going. So that's a that's a good thing.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So so you know, um, so uh I guess like with everything that you're doing, um, when have you had a moment to just say, wow, I I can't believe I'm doing what I'm doing right now?
SPEAKER_01Um, I don't have time for a lot these days. I'm always on the go. Um, but I like probably at night, like when I'm trying to fall asleep, I don't sleep well a lot of times either. But like at night when I'm sleeping, I'll think about a lot of things. I'll think about what I have accomplished and what I want to accomplish and how I'm gonna do that. So pretty much when I'm in the bed, that's pretty much the only time I have to just kind of reflect on everything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, you're you know, it's art artists, artists. That's how we all are. Uh always mind going a hundred miles a minute trying to, you know, want to do everything. And sometimes you just have to um just take that that break for yourself to, you know, reset. So um so you know, uh, we're sitting here and you know, and you know, just just talking about everything. And uh, you know, like I said, I see what you're doing, um, and your creative uh processes and and all that. Um, what are some of the things that you see? I usually, you know, not five years, but like six months. Like, what are your goals for like six months from now?
SPEAKER_01That's a better question than five years. I'm like, I don't even know what I'm gonna do next week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that yeah, I don't I don't like this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have no idea in five years. Um, six months, I would love to what are we in March? I would say more realistically towards the end of the year, drop my EP. Um, I would love for Slide Something video to be complete. Um venture more into acting. Um, I really want to do more of that as well.
SPEAKER_00So, like what type what type of roles are you, you know, you want to get into?
SPEAKER_01Um, so the one that I just did, it was what I am in real life, an artist. Um, but I would love to do thrillers. I don't think I would do horror, but thrillers or drama. Um yeah, just I want to get in my acting bag. I gotta get better.
SPEAKER_00All right. That that sounds good sounds good. We look looking forward to, you know, uh whatever whatever movies you you decide to do. No, they're gonna they're gonna be amazing. Um so when people hear green light and slide something, um, pretty much what feeling or vibe should they they give get when they when they hear both of these songs?
SPEAKER_01Um, so they talk about two completely different things, but they're both on the same vibe, kind of like that, you know, funky uh 80s vibe. Green light is very um very instrumental, like it has a trombone, it has keys. Um, I wanted it to be like that. And I maybe that's why I had like a whole lot of covers for that one. Um and slide something is just kind of like more like a dance record, like a, you know, this is something that you can really vibe to in your car with the if you have a convertible with the window down, um, if you're doing some skating, even working out, like they're kind of on the same vibe, but I think Slide Something is more like a real chill, um, like dance type record.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So like going forward with uh your EP that you you're coming up with, what are you what are uh people or I ain't gonna say fans, but what are your supporters gonna be looking forward to when they hear your uh your EP?
SPEAKER_01Um, I have people tell me that they want to hear more ballads, and I agree. Um there's a couple things, a few things that I would like to talk about in relation to like my personal life and family stuff. Um, because like I said, that's the way that I talk about things. So I would love to, you know, get more personal with my EP.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So by you doing that, does uh because I know a lot of artists that sing talking about your personal life is kind of hard because you you pretty much letting people in. So, like how how does that work for you when you make your music?
SPEAKER_01It doesn't bother me only because, like I said, it's kind of like therapy for me. Um and I know, I mean, if I'm putting it out, that means I want y'all to know about it. Um, if there's something I don't want y'all to know, I'm not putting it out. Um, but like there's you know, certain stuff with like my parents and their divorce that I would love to talk about and how it affected my sister and I. Um, because I also think that a lot of that stuff is very relatable. So you never know who else you're helping.
SPEAKER_02Um, true.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, so if I'm putting it out, I don't mind people knowing, you know, certain things in my story.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like that. Um, because there's a lot of people have gone through it um and you know, have dealt with it in certain certain ways. So to have somebody to pretty much be like they can see a person that's gone through it and relate to it, and and it's like, hey, if they can do it, then you know I can make it make it through it too. So um really looking forward to you know your project that you got coming out. Um so out of both songs, which which one is your favorite?
SPEAKER_01Um that's hard. I mean I'd probably say Greenlight.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Greenlight Greenlight came out of COVID. Um, I was bored and needed to come up with something, and then I just came up with the melody, and then I started writing the hook, and then got excited, and then had uh musicians jump on it. So yeah, it was yeah, I love Greenlight.
SPEAKER_00All right, cool. Uh one other uh I guess another thing, because I know um as even as musicians, they they sit there and they say that they have music that they wrote for years and it's that they sit on and it's like, hey, they go back and they're like, man, it's that one one song that they they sent to somebody and they listen to it and they was like, that's a hit. Uh with your support, your support circle has like Of you been able to like give a song to somebody that and it's just like, yo, that's that's that's that one, that's that Grammy award-winning song that you got.
SPEAKER_01I haven't written for anybody yet. I would love to. Um but there are some songs that I have that I have not put out that's you know just sitting on my hard drive. Um, I would have to go back and redo it, but yeah, there's plenty of of stuff that I have not put out yet. So yeah, I understand that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we we we're looking forward to all the all music that you're gonna be dropping. Um from what I've heard so far, uh, I like what I'm hearing. Um the stations, the shows they're liking what they're hearing. Um appreciate your manager sending me your music. Uh so we can, you know, put that in uh rotational pusher, independent, and also on Indy Heart. So uh we're getting your music heard uh just as just the same as everybody else is too. So um always tell people out there just support and just don't just do it out of you know, because you think you're gonna get something from it, but support because you would want the same thing for somebody to do that for you. So um that's that's my my little my little nugget for uh today. So um yeah. Uh so you know, what is it? I guess like because I'm I'm also an indie artist. Uh some of it, a lot of stuff I don't some of it I don't understand, but um like I know like you do music and you're you're out in situations and and you know things happen. Um what are some of the things that like as an indie artist starting out that they wouldn't understand? Or should they like get a mentor or a manager to help them through the through the process just starting out?
SPEAKER_01Um I guess the most important thing is realizing that this is not gonna be like an overnight success.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_01If and if you're doing it for attention, if you're doing it for money, you're probably not in the right field because it takes I mean, everybody's journey is different, but some people it takes years for them to you know to reach their big break. Um but everybody's different. Some people it takes shorter, some people it takes longer. I was just talking to my manager about that today. The journey is uh completely different for everybody. So, but you have to be doing it because you enjoy it. You have to do it because you love it, not for uh attention or money because you're gonna be very disappointed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Uh, because I I know that you you you're working hard out there. Um do you like even through all the hard work that you that you're doing and and trying to put yourself out there, do you feel like that's do you feel it's beneficial for you to do it yourself? Or is it better to to get you a a manager to help you along the way, to guide you and mentor you to you know make the better decisions, read contracts, you know, because sometimes as an indie artist they they see the numbers but they don't really read the small print.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. And I guess it depends on um where you are in your career. If you're just starting out, um, you may not need a full manager, maybe just somebody who can help you out with advice or something like that, like an artist who's been doing it for a while.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_01Um but once your workload starts to pick up and it starts to get overwhelming with emails and uh DMs and phone calls, then that's probably when you know a good time for a manager to step in and help you out. Because a lot of these things, Nate, my manager, he's been a huge help. And I don't know if I could have continued to do all the things I was doing by myself.
SPEAKER_00So shout out to to your manager. Yeah, he's he's he's a good guy. Um, I I I mean, like I said, I appreciate the opportunity that he was fortunate with me with to to you know interview you and all that. Um so I I take it uh I'm honored to do and to do that. So um what is you know, what is next for you, you know, in 2026, you know, and you know, what can your fans you know expect, look forward to from you?
SPEAKER_01Um so yeah, like I said, um we're gonna continue to push slide something, um, but I do want to put out new music. So I'm currently working on a collab with the artists out here in Atlanta. Um just gotta get it done. Be patient with us. We got some new stuff coming. Um in the video, like I said, I really would like for that to be in the works, but I want the video to be right. I don't want to just put out anything. Um so yeah, the new music will definitely be the next step. So just stay tuned.
SPEAKER_00All right. So so uh hope uh well, I ain't gonna say hopefully, but when you when you get that music, please, please send that mile away so I can push that for you.
SPEAKER_01I got you, of course.
SPEAKER_00Uh so um uh uh so as we you know we close up and you know you hear too, you hear your songs and everything. Uh any shout-outs you want to give, or how can uh your supporters follow, support, and share and see what you're doing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so of course, uh big shout out to my manager um and my parents. They're like my number one supporters. And um you can follow me on Instagram at Jasmine Renee Music. I'm currently working on a website, so that should be hopefully done soon. And but Instagram is where I'm active the most. So follow me on there, and I have all the updates on Instagram.
SPEAKER_00Okay, all right, cool. And so you got music coming out, you you you got fashion show, you, you know, you you're doing your uh slide something challenge. So you you real you're real busy uh uh right now. So uh just keep keep up the good work, you know, and you know, your fans out here is you know, they really you know, fooling with you and and just you know you know, just handle what you're doing. I'm I'm proud of what you're doing. So really proud of everybody that I that I've I've talked to so far, but like I like I stress, like just keep doing, uh making moves, you know, do it the right way. Um because I know it's a lot of you know jealousy out here and um people like they see you doing something and they like, how you how did you work with that person, but I can't uh work with them. And um so that's uh that would be my my my next question. How do you feel when like if if anybody's ever came to you and said, like, how is it that you working with them, but I I couldn't I couldn't get that same opportunity.
SPEAKER_01Um I just I I don't know, like I haven't had too much of that, honestly. Um, nobody can really deter me from working with anybody. I pick and choose who I want to work with, right? Um you know, unless I see it for myself. Because honestly, Atlanta is full of different egos, different personalities. People are so quick to try to jump ahead in front of somebody else, so you never know what they're saying is true or not. So I kind of just judge by myself and go from there. Um but Atlanta is huge of different talented musicians and artists, and I don't see why everybody has to feel like they have to step on each other's toes, but that's definitely Yeah, I I I I defin I definitely agree with that um because it's it's it's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Like I feel like it's enough music, enough money, uh enough enough people that can work together, and we should be able to like, hey, you working on something, let me help you out. But it's like if I see you working on something, then it's like I'm I don't I'm mad because you know you you're getting ahead. So it's it's it's just it's just it's crazy to me, but that's that's how that's how people move up here.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And probably down there too.
