Most of the time, our attention is anywhere but today. It drifts back into memory and regret, or rushes forward into planning and worry.  Meanwhile, the present moves quietly in the background, almost unnoticed. This piece explores what happens when we realize how often our minds are elsewhere, even during ordinary moments. The result is a strange feeling of always being busy, yet rarely truly present.

Most of the time, our attention is not on today. It is pulled toward what already happened or what might happen next. The past replays itself through memory and regret, while the future fills the mind with planning, anticipation, or worry. Meanwhile, today moves quietly in the background. I became aware of this when I noticed how often my thoughts were elsewhere, even during ordinary moments. A conversation would be happening, yet my mind was preparing for what came next. A task would be in front of me, yet my attention was already drifting ahead. The result was a strange feeling of always being busy but rarely present. The past has weight because it feels fixed. The future has weight because it feels uncertain. Today, by contrast, feels almost too ordinary to notice. Yet it is the only place where anything can actually happen. You cannot change yesterday. You cannot control tomorrow. But today responds to your presence. It shifts based on how you engage with it. I started testing this in small ways. Instead of thinking about how long something would take, I focused on what I was doing right now. Instead of replaying a conversation that had already passed, I noticed what was unfolding in front of me. Instead of rushing through moments to get to something else, I stayed where I was. Nothing dramatic changed on the outside, but internally everything slowed down. I felt less pulled in different directions. Decisions felt clear because they were being made in real time, rather than imagined scenarios. Even difficult moments felt more manageable when I met them as they were instead of as part of a larger story. Owning today does not mean ignoring the past or neglecting the future. It means recognizing their limits. The past can inform you, but it cannot be lived again. The future can be planned for, but it cannot be experienced yet. Today is the only place where choice exists. This understanding changes how pressure feels. When you stop caring all of time at once, life becomes more workable. You do not need to solve everything. You only need to respond to what is here now. That response might be small, a conversation you fully show up for, a decision you make with care, a moment of rest you allow without guilt. These choices may seem insignificant, but they shape how the day feels, and how the day feels shapes how life feels over time. Today does not ask you to have everything figured out, it asks you to be here, and that is the one thing you truly have control over.
