The Video Magnet Method — How to Build a Warm Audience Before You Spend a Dollar on Lead Gen Ads
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Have you ever launched a Facebook or Instagram lead generation campaign — put money behind it, felt excited — and then watched your cost per lead creep up way higher than you expected? Or maybe the leads came in at a reasonable cost, but they just weren't converting into buyers?
And you probably found yourself asking: is it the targeting? Is it the copy? Is it the creative? Should I change my audience?
If that sounds familiar, I want to offer you a different perspective today. Because while those things could be contributing, you haven’t set yourself up for success before running the lead generation campaign.
The issue could be that you went fishing in a cold pond.
You skipped a step. And that step is what today's episode is all about.
I'm going to walk you through what I call the Video Magnet Method — a top-of-funnel strategy that warms up your audience before you ever ask them for their name and email. It's a key part of what I teach inside the Invisible Ad Funnel strategy, and it is one of those things that, once you understand it, completely changes how you think about ads.
And the best part? You can start doing this for as little as a dollar a day.

I'm Jane Day and welcome to Abundant Funnels. I help coaches, course creators, and online experts get high quality leads and consistent sales without relying on guesswork, constant content creation, or$10 leads. In fact, I'm known for getting some of the best cost per lead results for quality buyers in the industry. This show is where we break down the ad strategy, the funnel, and the numbers so you can grow your revenue and buy back your time in a way that's actually sustainable. Let's get started. Hi there and welcome back to the podcast. As always, I'm so glad you're here spending a bit of time with me today. Have you ever launched a Facebook or Instagram lead generation campaign, put money behind it, felt excited, and then watch your cost per lead creep up way higher than you expected? Or maybe the leads came in at a reasonable cost but they just weren't converting into buyers. And you probably found yourself asking, is it the targeting? Is it the copy? Is it the creative? Should I change my audience? You just really weren't sure what to change. If that sounds familiar, I want to offer you a different perspective today. Because while those things could be contributing, you haven't set yourself up for success before running the lead generation campaign. The issue could be that you went fishing in a cold pond. You skipped a step, and that step is what today's episode is all about. I'm going to walk you through what I call the video magnet method, a top of funnel strategy that warms up your audience before you ever ask them for their name and email address. It's a key part of what I teach inside the Invisible Ad Funnel Strategy, and it is one of those things that once you understand it, completely changes how you think about ads. And the best part, you can start doing this for as little as a dollar a day. Okay, so I want to start by explaining why going straight to a lead generation campaign with a cold audience is such a common mistake and why it's becoming even more costly now in 2026. When you run a lead gen ad to a completely cold audience, people who have never heard of you, never seen your content, have no idea who you are, you are essentially walking up to a stranger at a party and immediately asking for their phone number. Technically some people will say yes, but a lot of people won't, and the ones who do say yes, they may not actually remember you the next day. That's what happens when you send cold traffic straight to a lead magnet opt-in. Your cost per lead goes up because you haven't done the relationship building work first. And the leads that do come through are often lower quality, people who are happy to grab a freebie but aren't emotionally invested in your world yet. Here's what I know after 13 years of managing ad campaigns. Facebook and Instagram ads work incredibly well, but they work best when there is a proper foundation underneath them, and that foundation is a warm audience, a pool of people who already know you, have seen your content, and have some level of trust built with you. When you run your lead gen campaigns to a warmer audience, your cost per lead drops significantly, your opt-in rates go up, and most importantly, the people who come through are far more likely to open your emails, show up to your webinars, and eventually become paying clients. So the question becomes how do you build that warm audience? Especially if you're earlier in your business journey or you don't have a huge organic following yet. And that's where the video magnet method comes in. Let me explain what this actually is because it's much simpler and cheaper than you would probably expect. A video magnet ad is a top-of-funnel engagement campaign. You take a short, valuable video, it could be a piece of content you've already created, a clip from a podcast, a reel that performed well organically, a quick educational tip, and you put a small amount of spend behind it to get it in front of your ideal clients. The campaign is set up as an engagement campaign, optimized specifically for video views and what meta calls through plays. That means Facebook and Instagram are delivering your ad to people who are most likely to watch 15 seconds or more of your video. And this type of campaign is one of the most affordable campaigns you can run. We're talking as little as a dollar a day. But here's the really clever part, and this is the bit I love to explain to clients because it changes the whole way they think about their ad spend. Every person who watches that video becomes part of a custom audience that you then retarget. So you're not just paying for views and hoping for the best, you are actually building a warm, retargetable pool of people inside your Meta Ad account organized by how recently they watched your content, generally 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days. And that audience is pure gold because now when you run your lead generation campaign, you can show it to people who have already watched your video and gotten value from you. They're no longer strangers, they're a bit warmer, and a warmer leads convert so much better. This is how the video magnet method fits into your overall marketing ecosystem. It sits right at the attract stage of your marketing. And the whole point of the attract stage is not to sell, it's to create visibility, build familiarity, and draw the right people into your world. The video magnet is your attract stage working on autopilot around the clock for a dollar a day without you have having to continually create new content all the time. Now let's talk about what actually goes into a great video magnet because content matters here. The key thing to understand is that this is not a sales ad. There is no call to action asking people to click a link or download something. The purpose of this video is purely to educate, inform or help your ideal client in some way. You give value with zero strings attached. And when you do that, when you show up and genuinely help someone without immediately asking for anything in return, something really powerful happens. Trust starts to build. Even if they don't consciously register it, the next time they see you in their feed, you feel familiar, you feel credible, and you feel safe. So what should your video actually be about? Think about the number one problem your ideal client is sitting with right now. What is the thing they are stuck on, confused by or frustrated with? What is the question they keep googling or asking in Facebook groups? Your video magnet speaks directly to that. It gives them a new piece of insight, a reframe, a framework, a quick win, something that makes them think, oh that makes so much sense. I haven't thought it about that way before. The beauty of this is that you probably already have content that fits a video you've posted on Instagram or Facebook that performed well organically, a reel that got saves, a clip from a live you did, a short educational piece you recorded for your audience. If it resonated organically, there's a very good chance it will resonate as an ad to because it's already proven. In fact, one of the smartest things you can do is take your existing organic content and boost it. You keep all the social proof, the likes, comments, shares, and you amplify it to a fresh, cold audience. It's incredibly efficient. But please note here when I say you boost it, don't press that boost post button. Instead, go into your ads manager and create an ad from that existing post in there. You will get a lot better results. In terms of length of the video, I would encourage you to test here. Three to five minutes can work really well, but even a 60-second video can build a meaningful video view audience. What matters more than length is the hook. The very first few seconds need to grab attention and make it clear who this video is for and what they're going to get from watching. Here's something I really want you to understand, especially given how much Meta's targeting has changed. I talked in a previous episode about how detailed interest targeting has become almost obsolete. A lot of the specific interests are gone. Meta is pushing us more and more toward Advantage Plus audiences and letting the algorithm do the heavy lifting for finding our ideal audience. And the best part is when we use Advantage Plus, Meta will automatically include people that have already engaged with us in the past as it knows that this audience is likely to convert on future campaigns, i.e. a lead generation campaign. When someone watches your video magnet ad and then gets retargeted, Meta already knows that that person has a genuine connection to your content. They're not a random name on a cold list. They raise their hand by watching your video, and Meta knows that. That's why warm custom audiences built through the video magnet method consistently deliver better results at a lower cost for your lead gen and sales campaigns. Think of it like warming up the pond before you fish. You're not just casting a net and hoping, you're creating the conditions where the right people are already swimming towards you. And the other thing I love about this strategy is that it works in the background. Once you have your video magnet campaign set up and running, it just keeps going. Every day new people are watching your video, every day your warm audience is growing. Even on the days when you're not running lead gen campaigns, you're building the foundation that makes your next campaign cheaper and more effective. This is exactly the kind of evergreen infrastructure that a well-built marketing ecosystem relies on. Now I want to take this one step further because the video magnet is just the beginning of the invisible ad funnel strategy. Once you've started building your video view custom audiences, the next step is what I call your nurture campaigns. These are a second layer of low-cost ads, again around a dollar per day per ad set. That retarget the people who have already watched your video and engage with your Facebook page or Instagram profile. The goal of the nurture campaign is not to generate leads or make sales, it's to continue building trust and staying visible in the feeds of the people who are already warming up to you. You might show them a different piece of valuable content, a client story, a post that addresses a common objection. Something that deepens the relationship just a little bit further. And this is the ignite stage of the AIA model coming to life in your paid strategy. You've attracted them with the video magnet. Now you're igniting the relationship, turning casual awareness into genuine connection. And here's what's really clever about this step the nurture campaign is set with a frequency cap of roughly one impression every four days. So you're staying in their feed consistently, but not so often that you become annoying. You're just always there, helpful and familiar. By the time you run your actual lead generation campaign to these people, they're already warm. They've seen you multiple times. They know what you're about, and your cost per lead reflects that. This is such a different approach to how most coaches and course creators run their ads. Most people think about ads purely as a lead generation tool. You spend money, you get leads. But what I'm describing here is a layered ecosystem where each campaign supports and amplifies the others. Your video magnet feeds your nurture. Your nurture feeds your lead generation. And your lead generation feeds your sales. Every layer makes the next one cheaper and more effective. I want to paint a picture of what this looks like in practice for you. Imagine you're a business coach and you have a group program launching in eight weeks. Most people would wait until about two weeks out and then start running lead gen ads for their webinar or lead magnet. And those ads would primarily go to a cold audience. But with a video magnet method, you'd start eight weeks out, or preferably they've been running for you 24-7 for months prior. You'd put a great piece of content, a video where you explain a key concept from your methodology or address a frustration your ideal client is feeling, and you'd put about a dollar a day behind it. Over those eight weeks or longer, you're building that warm audience of people who've watched your content. You're nurturing them with follow-up content. By the time your lead gen campaign launches, around two weeks before your event, you've got a ready-made pool of warm people to show it to. And because those people already know you, they're more likely to register for your webinar, they're more likely to show up, and they're more likely to buy. Your ad spend goes down, your results go up, and it all started with a dollar a day. Okay, so let's summarize everything I've discussed today. The video magnet method is about warming the pond before you fish. It's about using a small, affordable, top-of-funnel engagement campaign to get your valuable content in front of your ideal clients, build a warm custom audience, and create the conditions where your lead, gen, and sales campaigns can work at their absolute best. It fits perfectly into the attract stage of the marketing ecosystem, drawing people into your world before you ever ask them for anything. And when you add the nurture layer on top, you're building a self-sustaining low-cost system that keeps running in the background and makes every future campaign more effective. This is not a complicated strategy, and it's not an expensive strategy, but it is a powerful one. If this is something you want to implement properly, getting the video magnets set up correctly, building the right custom audiences, and layering in the nurture campaigns so the whole thing works as a cohesive system.
