What Is the Best Lead Magnet to Use in 2026?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Abundant Funnels, Jayne answers one of the questions she is asked most often: what type of lead magnet is working best right now?
Rather than recommending one format, Jayne explains why ebooks, quizzes, checklists, private podcasts and webinars can all work. The format is not what determines whether a lead magnet succeeds. What matters is whether it prepares the right person to take the next step towards your paid offer.
Jayne shares how to think about your funnel backwards, starting with the paid transformation and identifying what your ideal client needs to know, believe or achieve before they are ready to buy. She also explains why your lead magnet needs to create a quick win, connect logically to your offer and be delivered in a format your audience will actually consume.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why asking for the best lead magnet format is the wrong starting question
- What your lead magnet is actually there to achieve
- How to work backwards from your paid offer
- Why your lead magnet should solve one small part of the bigger problem
- How to create a natural bridge into your paid offer
- Why consumption matters more than downloads
- How to choose the right delivery format for your audience
- Why specific lead magnets attract better-quality leads
- The questions to answer before creating your next lead magnet

I'm Jane Day and welcome to Abundant Funnels. I help coaches, course creators, and online experts get high quality leads and consistent sales without relying on guesswork, constant content creation, or $10 leads. In fact, I'm known for getting some of the best cost per lead results for quality buyers in the industry. This show is where we break down the ad strategy, the funnel, and the numbers so you can grow your revenue and buy back your time in a way that's actually sustainable. Let's get started. Hi there and welcome back to the podcast. I'm Jane Day and I'm delighted to have you listening in today. Today's episode was inspired by a question I get asked all the time, but it was also asked again recently on a masterclass that I just ran. And that question is Jane, what's the best lead magnet to use right now that is working the best? And every time I'm asked that question, my answer is always the same. You're asking the wrong question. Now I know that probably sounds a little strange because on the surface it seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. We all want to know what's currently working the best because these things change all the time in the world of online marketing. We all want to know whether we should be creating an ebook, a guide, a checklist, a quiz, a private podcast, or perhaps a webinar. But honestly, the format isn't the thing that's going to determine whether your lead magnet succeeds or fails. The better question to ask yourself is what does my ideal client need to know, believe, or achieve before they're ready to buy my paid offer? Because that's what your lead magnet is actually there to do. It's not there to grow your email list. It's not there just to get cheap leads. It's there to prepare someone to become a paying client. And that is what you need to keep in mind as a top priority when choosing your next lead magnet. Because I see so many business owners creating lead magnets based on what's popular instead of what actually moves people closer to buying their offer and what is in the best interests of their ideal clients. They hear that quizzes are working, so they build a quiz. Someone else says a private podcast is the best and it's the latest trend, so they create a private podcast. Then somebody else launches a five-day challenge, so they build a challenge. But none of those things are automatically better than the others. They're simply different ways of delivering information. The real question is, what information does your audience actually need? Let's imagine you're a naturopath who specializes in helping women improve their gut health. You have a 12-week program that helps women reduce bloating, improve digestion and restore their energy. Now ask yourself, what does someone need before they're ready to invest in that program? Do they need 20 healthy recipes? It sounds good, but it isn't preparing them for your offer or attracting the exact right fit clients. But instead, do they need to understand something like why they're still bloated even though they're already eating healthy? So the lead magnet might now be called the five hidden reasons you're still bloated even though you're eating healthy. It's a lot more specific than giving them 20 healthy recipes. Now with your lead magnet title and information refined, you're going to attract leads that are the right fit for your program, and they are being delivered information that is moving them one step closer to becoming a paying client. I hope you can see how different that is because it is so important. It's not just giving information for the sake of it, it's creating a bridge. Someone consumes that lead magnet and naturally starts thinking, well, if these are the reasons I'm still struggling, what do I do next? And that's where your paid offer comes in. The lead magnet has done its job. It hasn't just educated, it's prepared someone for the next step. That's how I believe every lead magnet should work. I often encourage clients to think about their funnel backwards. Instead of starting with what lead magnet should I create, start with your paid offer. Ask yourself what's the transformation? What's the result? What are people struggling with immediately before they decide they need your help? Then build your lead magnet around that. Your lead magnet should solve one small piece of the bigger problem. It shouldn't solve everything. It shouldn't overwhelm people. And it definitely shouldn't leave them wondering why they need your paid offer. Instead, it should give them a quick win. One small shift, one light bulb moment. Enough that they trust you. Enough that they think this will actually work for me. And enough that they naturally want to take the next step with you. Because that's really what a funnel is. It's simply a series of logical next steps. One step leading naturally into another. And that leads me to the next point I want you to consider when creating your next lead magnet. Which is also something that is often overlooked. Your lead magnet actually needs to be consumed. Which I know seems obvious, but it is so often overlooked when the focus is just on how many leads we are getting. It's not enough for someone to download it or sign up for something. If it sits unopened in their inbox, it can't build trust, it can't create momentum, it can't move them towards your offer. So when you're deciding how to deliver your lead magnet, don't ask what format is trending right now. Ask what format is my audience most likely to consume. Maybe your audience loves listening while they're out walking the dog, so a private podcast could be perfect. Maybe they're busy professionals who want something they can scan in five minutes. A checklist might work beautifully. Maybe they need to see you teaching, so a short workshop or webinar might be exactly what they need. The best lead magnet isn't the one everybody else is using. It's the one your audience will actually consume. Because consumed content creates trust. Downloaded content doesn't, and it isn't beneficial to anyone. The other thing that is really important here is specificity. You've probably heard me say this many times on the podcast. Specificity wins. Your lead magnet shouldn't try to help everybody. It should make one particular type of person think this is exactly what I need. The more specific your title, the more specific your promise, the more likely you are to attract the right people. Not just more people, but better people. And that's a really important distinction because I'd much rather see someone generate a hundred highly qualified leads than a thousand people who are simply curious. The goal isn't growing an email list. The goal is growing a list of future clients. And they're two completely different things. So if you're currently trying to decide what lead magnet to create, I'd encourage you to forget about the format for a moment. Instead, ask yourself these questions. What does my ideal client need to know before they're ready to buy? What belief needs to change? What problem do they need to solve first? What quick win can I help them achieve? And what format are they most likely to actually consume? Answer those questions and then you'll create a lead magnet that's doing exactly what it should be doing. Not just collecting email addresses, but creating future clients. Because that's a purpose of a lead magnet. It's the first step into a relationship. It's not the end goal. Thanks so much for joining me today. I hope this episode has helped you think about lead magnets a little bit differently. And if you've been trying to decide what to create next, I hope it's given you a simple framework to work through before you start writing or recording anything. As always, if you've enjoyed today's episode, I'd love if you left a review or shared it with another business owner. And if you have a question you would like me to answer on a future podcast episode, come over and let me know on Instagram. I want this podcast to be your go to resource of what is working right now around funnels and meta ads.
