Shaping Our Story
Introducing a new interview podcast hosted by award-winning PBS TV and documentary film producer, Louise Krikorian.
Backstory: Why start a podcast called Shaping Our Story? When I was in college, my mentor, Dr. Maurice Elias, talked about human behavior in his Psychology 101 class. I liked this because I had always listened to family, friends, and co-workers' stories about their struggles and successes. As a teacher, I encouraged my students to find their purpose and thrive. Over the years of producing for NPR, AFN Radio Europe, and PBS TV, I've interviewed world renowned musicians, artists, filmmakers, and scientists who have realized their true talent. Shaping Our Story is a community of entrepreneurs, educators, and creatives who have become exemplary leaders and want to motivate others to realize their gifts and succeed.

Well! Welcome Cher Hubsher.
Thank you so much. I'm excited to be here and to speak with you.
I am too. And we, we're wearing matching top.
I know we're twin. That's my mom and i's thing. She's gonna be a little jealous. But I'm love with it. We didn't even plan it. That's the best part. I know. I was gonna go, I was gonna go, there's a store here in Tampa, Florida that sells wigs for costumes and I was gonna go get like my Morticia wig.
I love it. I love it. Maybe the, maybe the next time I see you at, um, at the, the school. The School of Rock Community School (Solid Rock Community School). I'll have that on. I'll get outta the car with that. Oh my God. I'll be cracking up. So I'm pretty sure we met there in 2024 because there was a really fantastic program at the school where you and your mom came and we have a, had a number of booths and students were walking around and parents and potential students and families.
For the Solid Rock Community School, I was so impressed with the school that it has a totally vegan community. Um, they have a full kitchen that's plant-based, they have a garden. Um, and I just, I felt so at home there because of that. And I'm so happy that the work that you're doing with your animal sanctuary where you've rescued 58 farm animals, that's just amazing.
Oh, thank you. I love doing that. Like I, I feel like that's my passion is being able to rescue animals. And it's so crazy that I moved to a place so close to this sanctuary that has also inspired me so much, um, where we met. And so actually the students of the sanctuary at Solid Rock, our Solid Rock Community School actually came by today to meet all my rescue animals.
It was such a full circle moment. 'cause I've gone to their sanctuary to visit so many times. But in order like to have their students come by and meet my animals and to realize like, wow, I'm actually like making a difference. And I'm actually a role model right now for these young children and showing them that they can do this too.
And. You don't have to be a huge sanctuary. It's just, you know, even the small things matter and um, your, every animal you help is still one animal that you helped. And so being able to show them that today was actually really special. Yeah. I am so proud of you and Bra, Bravo for encouraging our next generation and giving them that awareness, which I believe is a catalyst for change.
So thank you. Thank you so much. Yeah. So with, with that and all of the other things that you do, you're an entrepreneur, you're an influencer, what is would you say is your greatest passion or interest? Oh my greatest passion or interest? Well, I feel like first of all, first and foremost is my family. Like my family means everything to me. And part of what I do with influencing with my podcast and with my book A Bond That Lasts Forever is also spreading awareness to people that it's important to have a close relationship with your family. 'cause family is everything. And I hope to inspire others to be able to have closer relationships with their family as well. And so I'm very close with my mom. I was on sMothered.
A lot of people know me from smothered on TLC, which is a show all about mothers and daughters who are very, very close relationships. And so, um, I'm very close with [00:24:00] my mom and now I'm very close with my daughter and I love being able to be a, an influencer in that way and be able to show people that it's.
It's not weird to be close with your mom. It's not weird to be close with your daughter. It's actually a beautiful thing because who knows you better and who cares about you more than truly your own family. Um, so I love that. First and foremost, my family. And then also I feel like my mission on this earth since I was a little girl, I've always been so passionate about animals.
That has been since I was, I've been vegetarian before. You know, my, no one in my family was vegan or vegetarian. No one even knew what that was. My parents were brought up. You follow the food pyramid and you know, you have to eat your meat and your vegetable. You have to eat like, you know, your meats, your milks and everything.
And um, when I was like 11 years old, I always loved animals and I begged my parents one day for a pet. Um, goat or in chickens, and I fell in love with them and I had them actually as pets and then. One day I was looking outside eating a chicken nugget and realized like, wait a second, how can you eat chickens if you love chicken?
And it didn't make sense to me. So it clicked. And I told my parents that day, like, I am not eating meat anymore. I am done. And they were very mad at me, very, very upset. But I knew at that moment, at 11 years old, like this is gonna be my mission to change people's minds. Now my mom is even vegan and you know, my, my husband is vegan.
My, my child. My child, like all my friends. And so I have been able to make a difference in teaching people, just in educating people about, about animals and about how amazing they are and, um, and now rescuing as well. So I feel like that's just my personal mission too. Well, one of the things that I found so fascinating about you is that you also were a registered nurse and you worked in a psychiatric ward.
Yes. Who, who influenced you or inspired you to do that? Okay. Well, I grew up with two older brothers and my dad. And my mom, everyone in my family is in medicine. My dad's a doctor, my brother's a doctor. My other brother's a doctor. My mom's a dental hygienist. So they were like, you're gonna go to school and you're gonna become a nurse and that's what you're gonna do.
But I, so I did it. I went to school, I became a nurse. I listened to my parents, but that wasn't really, you know, my true passion. However, I loved helping people overcome. Anxiety and depression. And I ended up finding psych nursing and I realized, wow, like this is actually amazing because it's not the blood and the, the, that type of stuff and the peeing, the pooping that I, that was very hard for me.
Um, however, with psychiatric nursing, I fell in love with it because I was able to really make a difference and talk to people and be able to help inspire them to, you know. To keep wanting to live every day. 'cause a lot of the people who came into our psych ward came in extremely depressed, um, having extreme anxiety.
A lot of them came in after attempted suicide attempts and being able to work with them day in and day out. I remember they would say, you know, your shift's done. But I would still be staying there the day when on my day off I'd come visit my patients because I just wanted to see them get better because I knew like they had a whole life in front of them.
And even though. This was their hardest moment, and right now they're going through something really tough, like I, it's going to get better, and there is a light, and you have to just, you know, change where you are now because there's a future ahead of you and you have to believe in that. And so being able to really work with them and see change was such, um, and like it meant so much to me.
And so I, I really loved that job. However, um, I also saw that a lot of anxiety and depression really stemmed from poor relationships. A lot of people would come in feeling. Like they were unlovable or that they, you know, they couldn't find love. There was no one for them, or come in after really sad divorces and feel like their life was over.
And I also fell in love with the worlds of. Dating and relationships. And my husband and I got married very young. I was always like, you know, we always had this great relationship and my, but I would live vicariously through all my friends dating and my friend's friends. And so when I moved to New York City, I actually got life coaching certified and that's when I started a deep coaching business in New York City to really help people first start, um, stop.
Stem from, you know, becoming so depressed and having so much anxiety and ending up in my psych ward instead, let's figure this out right now, and let's make sure you enjoy dating, because dating is supposed to be fun and exciting and not, um, it shouldn't be something that's, that's, uh, something that you're scared to do.
So that's what I help people do now through my business, NYC Wingwoman. And I'm gonna include a link to NYC Wingwoman.
In the show notes. So thank you so much for that, that that's very important. Um, one of the, um, podcasts that I like listening to is Mel Robbins, 'cause she has this, she looks into human behavior and mindset shifts.
And, uh, I like the way that she asked Dr. Angela Duckworth this question, and I'd like to pose it to you. Would you agree that purpose. Is having a sense of responsibility and then acting with the intention of helping others. For me, that's what it means to me. Mm-hmm. And I think that for someone else, purpose can be, it can be selfish or it can be selfless, but for me, that is my goal.
So everything I do is around either helping people. I feel my purpose is to help people find love. My purpose is to help save animals, or my purpose is to inspire others to live more confidently or to have better relationships with their family. And those all I feel like are my purpose. I feel like I'm very, um, I don't have my, my brain, it's not like one path for me.
I feel like there's multiple paths, but all of them are a purpose in order to help others and inspire others because. You know, we only have one life to live. And I always hope that once I'm no longer here, at least I could have inspired someone else to live a better life or been able to help somebody, um, you know, make a difference as well to the next generation too.
So, in your work, what have you learned from your biggest professional failure? Hmm, my biggest professional failure. Um, I think that you just, you know, you never can give up. And also not to let. The people who don't believe in you get you down because they don't truly know your full story. I think for me, actually, when I was 16 years old, I was on a TV show called My Super Sweet 16, and it was blasted everywhere.
And at the time, reality TV was not very big. So this show, since it was a reality show, it was huge because reality TV was really just getting started and. This show became a v, like a big, big hit. However, there's always people who are going to, you know, say not the nicest things who are gonna try to put you down.
And even though I was so young, I really feel like I stayed true to who I was because I real like, remembered that they didn't know who I was. And I just have to keep, you know, showing up and being the best version of myself so I can prove them wrong. Um, and I think I learned that at such a young age to not let.
The negativity, get me down. Because when you put yourself out there, you're going to be faced with a lot of negativity at times, especially through social media. I put myself out there through, you know, influencing and all the stuff that I do now. There's always going to be negative comments or people who don't like you, and that's okay because they don't truly know me.
They don't know my heart then, or they're, you know, judging very fast. But I guarantee if someone took them a chance to really get to know me, I think that I could change their mind. So, um, I think having to learn that at such a young age and to be able to not let that get to me, I think really made a difference in who I am today.
I think one of the things that I really liked, um, was what your husband, Jared said about you when you two were first dating and that was on your podcast called Chatter Mouth.
There's an, it's you and your mom, Dawn Huber. Yes. Interview Jared about what it was like to date you. And he said one of the things that he, he really had a strong sense about you was that you were like the angel on his shoulder to guide him through being, being [00:33:00] nice and, and I'm gonna say the word kind.
And so I think that comes naturally to you and that it seems to me like there are things that might not come easily to you, but you do persevere through. Through them. Just like what you talked about, and you've also talked about being bullied in middle school and you've, you've gotten through that and you still have persevered.
So with all of that, what keeps you inspired? What keeps me inspired? I think just being able to do what I love doing every single day. I think every day I have the ability to wake up and say like, today's a new day, and like, how am I gonna impact today? And so, um, I also really wanna be able to be a good role model for my daughter and be able to make change for like, the animals, you know?
Um, I think that I'm just, I enjoy what I do. I love what I [00:34:00] do, and I think when you're really happy doing what you're doing, then it's no longer work. It's just a part of who you are and a part of who you want to be. And so every day I look at that, okay, like today. What am I gonna do? Who am I gonna inspire?
How am I gonna do this? Um, and so, yeah, I think that's what would be my answer. And I, I think in, in your book, which I really enjoyed reading, A bond that lasts forever that you wrote with your mother. Um, I think what you just said kind of sums up the quote that one of the quotes, 'cause you have several quotes in the book, uh, was a quote by Jane Goodall and it.
She stated, you cannot get through the day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you wanna make. So I hear that in, in what you just said. So with that said, what do you hope to do [00:35:00] next? Because you've already done so much.
Thank you. Uh, that's a great question. Well, you know, I don't like to plan so far. So far ahead. I think right now I really just focus on like the day to day of what I'm doing. So whether it's, you know, work, honestly right now I think it's trying to. Figure out all my animals and my sanctuary. I mean, we have 58 animals and I am like the sole caretaker of these animals.
Um, we never had any help. It was always just me. My husband would help some and my dad would help some. But really just us. And just this week actually, we finally hired someone. 'cause 58 animals needs a lot of attention a lot. So my goal is just to be able to grow it more and just to be able to, you know, rescue more right now.
Um. But I'm not sure. You know, I think I like to live every day and just kind of see where life takes me. I would like to maybe one day get out. Like so many people on my social media are constantly asking me for vegan recipes and constantly, I'm constantly inspiring others to try to, you know, try to cut out meat a little bit more and more if they can.
And so people are always asking for recipes. So maybe one day getting out a recipe book or more vegan clothing line. Right now, I, I've had a clothing line, but I'd like to focus on more like. Whenever I'm looking for vegan attire, it's hard to find some, um, really cute ones. So maybe, maybe that as well, but we'll see.
Time will tell. Well, your mom and you do these, um, the, your clothing line is called twinning. Yes. And so, um, every now and then you will drop. Yeah, we'll do a drop. Exactly. Right. But the outfits are so cute where they're just a little bit different from each other.
Yes. And um, to, I think that's, that's really special, that bond that you have with your mom.
And I really wish when I was reading your book, I really wish that, um, I believe that was published in 2019. But I wish I had had that book before my mom went into a nursing home with dementia. 'cause I would've shared that with her, whether she would've wanted me to share it with her or not. So I highly recommend, uh, a bond that lasts forever.
And um, so since you are an influencer, um, what would be your advice for someone starting their journey? I think don't, I think. Don't be scared to put yourself out there. And I know the world is a scary place and you know, you might be met with people who don't like you, but just remember they don't know you, but just stay true to who you are and like, don't be scared if you want to.
You know, I think influencing is such a, an amazing thing. Instagram, social media has really transformed the game. So if there's anything you want to do in life, like if you can get it out there, then so many doors will open for you so many more. So I think just, you know, be consistent and be true to who you are because people can tell when you're not being authentic.
So, and um, I think really it's about like authenticity and consistency. So, speaking of consistency, what do you do consistently every day? Well, every day I'm taking care of my animals, all my chores, all my farm animals. That's a lot of work, lots of feed, lots of very expensive to take care of. But, um, doing that every day.
Um, and then I do work with different brands on social media, um, as well as I run my deep coaching business. As well, making sure all the coaches and everything have what everybody has what they need. Um, and running the backside of it as well. Um, through like SEO and different things. And then taking care of my daughter.
Still consider myself a stay at home mom. 'cause as soon as she's done with school mm-hmm. I'm off the clock of everything else and I'm, yeah, all mom mode and that's it. Taking her to gymnastics, tumbling all her classes. Um, fully there, a hundred percent because the time goes so fast. Like I can't even believe my daughter is six years old already, so I am, you know, a hundred percent mom mode as soon as she walks through the door from school.
Yeah, Belle is absolutely adorable and she looks so happy and so healthy. Oh, thank you so much. Yeah. Yes. So is it, is it all right for me to say Mazeltov? 'cause she, oh, aw, thanks. Yes. Beautiful. Oh, thank you. So I'm really impressed with your entrepreneurship, the businesses that you've run, um, how you've made this progression from even being a, a cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and then working that into being a nurse and then, and then just having this journey of everything that you do seems to be making a positive impact.
So, Cher with all of the things that you do. What keeps you inspired? I think, you know, my mom raised me to feel very confident and to truly believe in myself, so I give her a lot of credit for everything. I always looked up to my mom and her positivity on life. She always goes through life with a smile on her face and just like living each day to the fullest and just being happy and grateful.
And she inspired me a lot in that way to be the woman that I am today and to believe that I can do anything because she instilled that confidence in me so young, but also my mother-in-law and she passed away, um, a few, like a few years back. I was very close with my mother-in-law, and you know, a lot of people have bad relationships with their mothers-in-laws, but I was very, very close with her [00:03:00] as well and she really inspired me in the fact that she felt told me, you know, you can do anything.
A lot of, when I was younger, you know, my mom. She was a dental hygienist when many, many years ago. But when she raised us, she was a stay-at-home mom, housemaker, you know? And she and I kind of always felt, oh, I'll just do that. But my mother-in-law, she was a dentist, very hard worker, and she's like, Cher, you can do anything.
Like don't just settle for that and you don't need a man. Even though she was my mother-in-law, my husband's mom, she's like, you don't need a man to take care of you. You take care of yourself. You should always have a backup, always have a plan. You know, you have a way to make money and be strong. And she really inspired that and inspired me real, made me realize like, yeah, like I don't need to rely on someone else.
Like it's great that I, you know, I'm married and I have a wonderful, wonderful husband. However, like I can also support, I can also take care of myself. And she really inspired me as well. So, and you mentioned, I'm sorry, um, you mentioned, uh, Dr. Gottman Yes. In your dedication? In my book, yes. In your book.
Yeah. That's beautiful. She, I was writing it. I remember when she was in hospice, I was next to her sitting there and writing and, um, she was a wonderful, wonderful lady. Yeah. I guess her purely. Very lucky to have her love in your heart. Thank you. Yeah. So where can our listeners connect with you online?
Yeah. Um, they can follow me on all social media platforms. I'm at Cher Hubsher,
@cherhubsher (Instagram)
@cher.hubsher (Facebook)
@dawn.hubsher (Tagging her mother)
it's C-H-E-R-H-U-B-S-H-E-R on Instagram, TikTok, um, Facebook, and then as well as, um, they can follow my podcast Chatter Mouth podcast or grab my book upon that last forever. And so, yeah, I would love for them to follow. And I also wanted to touch on one thing you asked me before, which was.
About putting yourself out there. Um, and I just wanted to say if someone wants to do social media or they want to do, you know, influencing or whatever it is they wanna do, there's never gonna be a perfect time to do it. Like you just gotta do it and you just gotta believe in yourself and you just gotta go and just gotta try.
And I think self-trust and consistency will matter so much more than perfection. So I really believe just putting yourself out there and trying. And also there's no, you don't have to always have one path. Like I went down this road where I was a nurse. I was supposed to just be a nurse, but I realized I wanted something else.
I wanted something different. So I went and got life coaching certified and I became a dating coach. And then I wanted to act still. I loved that I did acting and cheerleading and you know, and social media and influencing, and I have a farm now and like such different variety and so many different things.
But I just don't want people, at least if they take something away from this [00:06:00] episode to remember that you don't have to be just one thing. You do have one life to live, to do everything. Try all of it. Find your passion, find your love, and follow your dreams because this is your life. So take control and do whatever it is that you wanna do, because really we can do anything as long as we try.
That's a perfect point to end on. Thank you so much. I, I really appreciate you sharing your success and your varied interests and how you have this natural ability to share. That's your name. Cher. Share your love of, um, just making a really positive impact on the world. Thank you so much. Well, you too, by, with this podcast.
You know, I feel like it's very inspiring. I love hearing, you know, all the stories that you share here. So thank you. Thank you so much, and I hope to see you soon up at Solid Rock Community School. Yes, definitely. Me too. Thanks. Bye Bye.
