In this episode, Pastors Luke Evans and Devon Patton discuss the story of John baptizing Jesus and the struggle many people face when they feel unqualified for what God has called them to do. They talk about overcoming doubt, trusting God’s purpose, and recognizing that God often uses people who don’t feel ready for the task before them.

I was thinking about it this morning because we're getting ready to prepare for our podcast, as uh you guys know I often do. Just these other guys don't show up, but yeah. I think about it constantly. Um and I was like, what are we gonna do when we get to like episode 52 or whatever, like where we're at a year. Episode 500. I got a plan. You got a plan for a one-year anniversary episode.

I was thinking about this the other day. There's like weird stuff, obviously, in all of our lives and things that we like really like. Like, you don't know why you really like it or like what the reason is behind it, but I love candles. Like, you know, I light a candle almost every day. That was actually something that like when I first started working here, we kind of like bonded over. He was like, Oh, nice, you like candles. Really connected. Yeah, and got me my job, actually. Um, but you talk about my you whenever you say things like that, you talk like you haven't known my dad since you were 18 months old. Like he talks about him, like yeah, when I started working here, like me and me and Uncle Mark really. Yeah, I do call him Uncle Mark. You've known him here in time. I'm a 31-year-old man, he's not my uncle.

Like the other day, Nicole sent me, my wife, she sent me to the store to pick something up, like TJ Maxx to try and find something. She was going to a like a party, and she was like, Hey, I need a gift for this event that I'm going to. Like, can you just go find it? And like, I immediately like went to the candle section, and I'm like, Well, I'm buying a new candle, I want a new candle. And you picked out a good gift? I didn't. She ended up needing anything, so I just got the candle instead. Um, but it was great, but it's like I just love it. So I was like, you know what? I'm gonna look up the city. You could really get lost in the candles at TJ Maxx and places like that. And they got a lot. They got a lot, and they had them like color coordinated and everything. Oh that's great. I love that. And it was great, but I mean, some of them just look super girly, but I'm like, I don't care, it smells nice. You don't get a head. As long as it smells good. You don't get a head from what, candles? From like in no the candle section. Absolutely not. I'm in heaven. Okay. It's the greatest place. Serenity by Jan. I love it. Sand and James. Bonfire. Alright, go ahead. Um, and so obviously they don't know when candles like first became like a thing because they're super old. People were. You've seen it on Prince of Egypt, right? You guys have seen that? Yes. I have. 3000 BC. The first candles, though, they were not great, obviously. They're just soaked in animal fat. They're using these wreaths. They smoked greatly. Like they were very, very a lot of smoke. They were dripping the animal fat, like hot animal fat, off of it constantly, and then they smelled terrible. Hot animal fat. That sounds so gross.

And then, so obviously, we've grown a lot when it comes to our candle making today. Do you I mean, you obviously you want to guess like what most of them are made out of today? Wax. Obviously, wax. Beeswax? Beeswax is a huge one. You guys seen like a lot of people have moved forward from the water. And what we've learned about bees, they still are hot animal feds. They are hot animals. Um, wait. What? Wait, let me go. Wait, what? Uh soy and then paraffin are how they are. Aren't the soy ones the ones you shouldn't be burning in your hand? I don't know, because I was thinking about that too. Yeah, I think there's there's the ones that are good. The paraffin ones, maybe. Because they make like vegan candles, so that's the ones that don't have bees waxed. I think you're right. But the other ones, the paraffin ones are like petroleum-based candles. So maybe that's the bad one. Yeah, that's probably the bad one. So you probably should want to be clear. And then this last little fact about candles is every candle is actually briefly creating tiny diamonds. Think about that. Microcarbon particles burn away almost instantly in the flame, but scientists have been able to find them in the soot under extreme microscopes.

How about all the movies like where they are like in a cave or in the woods and all of a sudden it's like, oh, look at this stick with a cloth around it, and let me light this on the room. Yeah, they need to be soaked in some animal fat. Yeah. That's how it would burn. It wouldn't just burn. Yeah, it would just burn up in a cell. Yeah, you gotta burn something. Yeah, the cloth on it would be donezo. So animal the animal fat must last longer. Hot animal fat. It'll stay with you. Like in the treasure room in national at the end of National Treasure. Yeah, dude. Like all that liquid that's in there. Hit it with the fire. That must have been hot animal fat. Yeah, that's hot. Animal fat. You haven't seen National Treasure? I thought you guys did it at a movie night. Oh, that was night at the museum. Listen, it's our 250th birthday as a nation. Yeah, you call yourself.

I like when we learn something and then you get to put the pieces together to figure out other things. So now we know that vegan candles are not the beeswax ones. I'm pretty sure that's soy. Well, we've come to that. We've come to the conclusion. We've come to the conclusion that that's what it is. I'm sure some vegan tiny diamonds in all of your candles. Tiny diamonds? Have you ever seen trolls? No, probably not. No. Could you ever go vegan? Dude, heck no. Nicole was telling me, because obviously I'm always battling with uh I could, dude. But like shrimp health issues, right? I'm always like, something's going on. She was like, you probably it's my gut, right? Like obviously with this meat and that I'm dealing with. And she was like, would you try that? Like go vegan for like a month and just see what happens? I'm like, no. Couldn't do it. I don't think I could do it. No. My nephew's what would I have to eat? Nothing? Like rabbit's food for lunch.

Just lettuce every day? No, well, like my nephew's my nephew's vegan. They make like vegan-based protein so. So like she'll make them like vegan pizza, and it's like, you know, wheat flour and fake cheese and stuff like that. Is it good? Tomatoes. Honestly, the vegan pizza she makes slaps. Nowadays it's probably a lot easier than also they have these little uh these little chocolate, they're called Abe's or something. They're like these little chocolate muffins that you can buy at Whole Foods and stuff. They're vegan. They're pretty good, I'm not gonna lie. But I could never do it for like as a lifestyle. We were watching something the other day, and it was like me and oh, me and Drew, when we went to the museum the other day, and it was like, man, that had to be the worst. Like back in the like colonial times, like that had to be the worst time to live.

Mateo came up with a great idea. It's a hard we Mateo had this idea of what we should be talking about and what he wanted to talk about, and I said, Nope. We're not doing that. Um, no, no, you actually didn't say anything. You just walked in. I just walked in and was like, this is what we're talking about today. But again, there's different things throughout our lives as pastors, as Christians, believers, that like when we're reading and studying God's Word, or we're talking about God's Word, or like us, we're preparing for a sermon, or we're doing something, we're in God's Word and we're reading and studying, but it feels like, oh, this is this like grabs our attention, or this feels like, even though I've read it a thousand times, this is something that is new to me, or or I thought was interesting. Um, and so the story that I thought was kind of cool that I wanted to kind of share is in Matthew chapter three. Um it's a story of Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist. Um, and so you guys have heard this before, you might have read it in a different gospel that gives a little bit more detail. Um, but there's just a few things that in in John chapter three we learn about like who John the Baptist was. Like the dude's a wild man. Like he it says here, like John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Mountain man. He's a mountain man, right? And so like it's just like who John the Baptist is first and foremost. Um, is just like that. Like it's somebody who's again, he's out in the wild. This is just who he he was who he was, but he's used by God, and it's recorded here in Matthew um about that. And so to just kind of like give a little background, like John. The Baptist comes and like he's called, right? Like he's a prophet, like they like he's there to to baptize, he's there to push forward again these prophecies and these things that God is telling him. Um, but it seems like in the words that he's using, like he's very like harsh, like you know what I mean, like he's very straightforward. Like he's for sure. Like in verse 7 it says, But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come, but bear fruit in keeping with repentance, and to not presume to say to yourselves, Well, we have Abraham as our father, for I tell you, God is able from among these stones to raise up children for Abraham. And so it's like, even now the axe is laid at the root of the trees. He's like, he's calling them vipers, he's telling him he's gonna chop down any trees that don't bear fruit. Like the dude's coming through, and he's just ready to rip. Like, and it's it's good. It's what in the Old Testament we see these judges and we see these people that come and they speak for God, and that's what they're doing, right? Like, for those of you who don't know, like Jesus is constantly battling throughout his ministry with these Pharisees who think that, well, they know the law, they they of course they know the law, but Jesus came to to again save us from the law, save us from our sins, and to to offer us grace and salvation, but he's just there and he's he's prophesying. And so in verse 13 is 13, 14, and 15 is what I wanted to talk about today because I just thought it was interesting. Is so like that's who John the Baptist was. This wild man who comes, he's a bit harsh, a bit, um, he's just doing what he thinks is he's supposed to and what God has told him to do. Um, and he prophesies that there will be somebody, he prophesies about Jesus, and he says, There will be somebody who's gonna baptize you, um, not in water, but he's gonna baptize you with the Holy Spirit. And so in verse 13 it says, And then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. And what I learned about this is the Jordan River is in the desert, right? And it's this river that flows through, and people and so Jesus is walking into the wilderness and into the desert where John is to meet him there to be baptized by him. Um, and then John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, um, and do you come to me? And so John has this very like human response of like, even though God has called him and made him a prophet and he's doing what he's supposed to be doing, he sits there and he's like, I need to be baptized by you. Like, what do you mean? Like, what do you mean you need me to baptize you? Like, Jesus, I and so Jesus answered, Let it be so for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. And then he consented. And so, and then Jesus was baptized, and it says that immediately the heavens were opened up and he saw the Spirit of God descending on a dove. And so it's like John understands his calling and what he's supposed to be doing, but at the same time, like knowing what God's calling in your life is not the same as like understanding the steps that it will take and those different things. And so it was like for me in my life, like I think there's things that God asks me to do, like whether that is as a pastor or as a husband or as a father, and it's like John, like Jesus, like God Himself is the one who's put it on my heart, or the Holy Spirit is the one himself who's who's told me this is what I'm supposed to be doing. But like John and I have this like super real and human response of like, I don't think this is I don't think you're supposed to be doing that. Like, it's my job. I think this is my job. I don't I think that that's your job. Like, I think you're supposed to be doing that, and so I just thought that that was like it I've obviously read the story a ton of times and and heard this before, but it's like this person, and we do that too. We're like John the Baptist, where we go around with this mission that God has told us what to do, and God is, but even then, like even after prophesying and saying, Hey, you Pharisees, this is how you're acting, this is what you're supposed to do, and God is gonna cut down those trees. We still get a little bit of hesitation when it comes to those things that we think that, oh, this is above my pay grade. This is something that you should be doing, God. This is not something I know you've asked me to do it, but this is something really I think you should take. So I just thought that that was crazy, but an interesting. I think we all get a little bit a little feeling of inadequacy sometimes when we think about like like John, when we think about doing the things that God has obviously called us to do, and we would much rather let this is a case of baptism, but in our lives, we'd much rather let Jesus do the work, right? Like Jesus, why don't you just save my friend at school? Why don't you just save my friend at work? Like, why don't you take it? Like you're Jesus, you should be doing that, but there's a responsibility that God has placed on each of us to go and to do the work. And and I think sometimes we do. We look at life and go, man, Jesus, if you could just take care of this, and it's like, nah, that's not really how it works. Like I'm I'm here to I I'm take I'm gonna I'm gonna be right there with you, but like there's these things that we have to do because God has called us to do. And I don't I think when you I think when people I think it's really clear when people don't when people do get a little bit more arrogant with it or a little bit overly confident with the things that God has called them to do, I think it shows and I think we need to remember it's okay sometimes to feel a little inadequate. I would much rather be humble in my approach to what God has called me to do than prideful in it. And so I I I think if you're feeling a little bit inadequate and you feel a little bit like, man, I'm not I don't know if I can do this, I think that's okay. I don't think you have to because I think a lot of people feel like, oh, I can't believe I feel like that. Like, you know, well, Jesus or like John is not self-affirming his prophecy, like the Messiah, Jesus is the one who's affirming what he's supposed to be doing. But I think we do that all the time. It's like, oh, I'll figure it out, I'll do this. I'm supposed to be doing this because I made this decision. And or I'm in the way that I lead my family, in the way that I lead my spouse, in the way that that I work and my career and the things that I do, we like self-affirm this idea that we have based on our own knowledge, based on our own understanding. And John is what he's doing is like, no, I need Jesus to affirm this for me. I need the Messiah to step in and say, This is what's going to happen. And so John is right in the sense of like his things are limited, like his power is limited. Like, there is this prophecy that's being proclaimed, and it's really cool. Um, and it's awesome that God has told him to baptize people, but he's like, I can only baptize you in water. Like this affirming that comes from Jesus means he's going to baptize you in the Holy Spirit, which is going to change everything, which is going to bring Pentecost, which is going to bring the eruption of this early church when Jesus leaves and he brings this Holy Spirit. And it's like, all right, that's way better than anything that I affirmed in my own life, but like I could do on my own. And so I just think that it's it's a it's a sick passage. And that's what Jesus does. Right. I think it's cool. It is definitely sick. It's also really cool because every time I read that story or people talk about it, I always think about it's probably the only time, one of the only times, or maybe the only time, where we see uh we see God in three persons all at the same time. You see Jesus getting baptized, you see the the dove ascending, the Holy Spirit, and God says, This is my mind. This is my voice.

So God speaks, the dove comes down, and Jesus is there all at the same time. So like what a ball of passing. So like you're you're there and you're like, oh.

So if you were there in that moment, if you're John or you're one of the people that are there in that moment, like other than when we get to heaven, like it's that's like the one time where you're like, dude, they're all like they're all here, like everybody's here.

Like, you know, and and and I I agree with what you're saying, and that and I think the cool part is is that Jesus eventually does affirm all of us, yes, and that's why he can't went to the cross, that's why he saved us, is to affirm us and to encourage us and to uplift us and and move us into the direction. And I think that that's a really cool passage, and the way that you brought it up of John has no problem telling people what they need to hear, he has no problem prophesying and telling, you know, Jesus. It's it, you know, you didn't read it, but it's part of the story, right? Jesus is coming, behold, here comes the Lamb of God who comes to take away the sins of the world. Like he said, there he is, like he's proclaimed there he is. That's who I've been talking about. Like there he is, and so he has no problem doing all of that. But then when it comes time to do this, it's like, man, I really need Jesus to, I really, I really need Jesus to affirm me. And I think it should encourage all of us that if John the Baptist, who literally leapt in his mother's womb when he heard about Jesus, like what if he needs affirming, then I think it's okay if we need affirming every now and then.

If we need to look in the mirror and say, God, could you just encourage me today a little bit? Could you let me know I can do this? Like, I think I I think that shouldn't it should certainly it certainly encourages me. I hope it encourages other people too. Yeah, the other cool thing was the what like when I was studying and looking at it was what it leads to for Jesus. Like Jesus is fulfilling prophecy, and it kind of shows that too. Is yeah, Jesus could have stepped up and just said, Yeah, no, you know what, I'm gonna baptize you. But it's Jesus was obedient to again the prophecy and fulfilling the prophecy and fulfilling that old testament, what that had been said about him coming and everything like that, and him getting baptized, and right, we talk about baptism as this obedience for us as Christians and as believers because Jesus himself is being obedient, but it's preparing him for the temptation that we see in Matthew chapter 4, which is again, he's led into the wilderness, he's tempted by the devil, like he is fully human and he's being tempted, and it's just this this cool parallel for what it's preparing what it's preparing him for and the necessity that Jesus sees. But then also what Matthew does a lot of the times if you're reading Matthew is it like shows Jesus as a new Israel, right? Or like it shows the parallel of like the Israelites came to the Jordan River, right? And there's different things and and they didn't cross it, and they didn't go into the promised land, and they didn't do these things, and then Jesus steps into the Jordan River and then moves into the wilderness in this fulfillment of prophecy in it. So it's just like again, it's nothing's there by accident. It's cool, it's just cool stuff. Like, again, open up your Bibles and read it and do some studying and look at it. Like, because it's it's just cool that that all of those different pieces, like he's fulfilling prophecy, he's mirroring and he's showing these people who know the law and know the old testament scripture about what their their people have been through now that he's here and and his fulfilling prophecy is it's just cool. And John loses his head over it all. Yeah, but he literally loses his head. Literally literally, but he's still not scared to do it. And I think what's really cool too, not not even about the story, but just how you just said open your Bibles. You know, we talk about the secret place all the time here at New Life, and obviously we've encouraged you on the podcast to read your Bible and stuff like that. But you literally just read four verses, it was four, four different verses like all that, like we we you know, we just pulled that out of four or five verses in scripture. And so, again, if you're reading your Bible, if you're new to reading your Bible, or even if you've been reading your Bible forever, like you don't need to overcomplicate it, you don't need to read 18 you know chapters in order to get something. Like, if you read it with the intent of, man, God, what can you show me in this? Like, God will show you something. Yeah, and the last thing I wrote down was just like John, like we gotta stop forcing Jesus into our expectations of who he should be or what he should be doing. Like, because John has again knows the scripture, knows prophecy, has been called by God, but he still has these expectations of Jesus, you should be doing this, not me. And it's I think that that's something, another lesson that we can learn as Christians and as believers on a daily is we gotta stop putting Jesus in this box of yes, he should have healed my family over. Yes, he should have been gracious here instead of being it's like we need to stop putting him in that box and and painting that picture because it's that's not who Jesus is. Jesus let him write his own mission, let him do what he needs to do instead of putting him uh expectations on him. So yeah, I think that that's interesting too. Well, it goes back to you know what I said before and what we were talking about of you know, Jesus, why not why don't you save my friend? Why don't you save my coworker? And it's like Jesus is gonna, you know, there's tasks and there's things that we need to do, and there's seed that needs to be planted and cultivated by us in order to achieve all those things um that we can through through the Lord, and he'll give us the strength to do it, but that doesn't mean he's just gonna just do it. Like there are things that you're teaching your kids right now how to do that you could just do it for them, yes, but you know that's not helping them in the long run. And I think a lot of times we expect God to be this, you know, he's this gracious, loving father, and he's just gonna do everything for us, and it's like I don't it doesn't work like that. Like you you gotta learn to do that on your own. Eventually, somebody's you know, eventually you gotta let go of Georgie's hand and let her walk until she falls on her butt. Like you you you gotta learn how to do it, and and I think sometimes, like you're saying, we put those expectations on God, like he's gonna just do everything that we expect him to do when he's uh that's he's got a sense of humor and he's not you know, sometimes he does the unexpected, a lot of times he does the unexpected where we look at it and we go, Oh, I didn't see that coming. But in the long run it ends up being something that's beneficial to all to all of us for sure.

Like, let me see that because that must have been a moment. Like, again, I don't know how you could read stories even from the forget about the old testament stories, like in the sense of like they are strange and there's things that happen, and in Genesis and your dad talked about the flood over the last couple weeks, like there's these different things in the old testament, and then you look at the life of Jesus in the gospels, then you look at the life of Paul and his calling in Acts, and it's like same with worship, same with any of this stuff. Like, I don't get how people are like, Oh, that's it's just an ancient book, it's boring, it's all this different stuff, and I'm like, you're not actually reading it, like like anything, it's it's interesting if you put the time in. Like, again, it's interesting, but it's it's way more like read something else about it. If you have a question about it, I don't understand this when I read it, it doesn't make any sense. It's so old. It's like open up your computer, type in, hey, what is John the Baptist? Like, this dude sounds crazy. Where was he from? What was he doing? It's like, yeah, it's just lazy. I know it sounds bad, but it's like it is like a big thing. You brood of it. It just it is, it's like spiritual laziness. That's why we get bored because it's like if they took if they took there's hundreds, maybe even thousands of Bible stories that if they took it and made it a movie or a miniseries and didn't attach it to the Bible at all, they just said we're gonna make this a movie or a miniseries. People would be like, Oh, this is so sick. And then if you told them, hey, that's in the Bible, yeah, like you know, it because of the stories like you're saying, and they're wild. Yeah, they're wild, but they're just interested. Like, even those little there's four verses that we just read about John the Baptist, this crazy guy, and Jesus and him affirming, and it's like all the other stuff that falls into it, or that you can ask questions about and be curious about. It's like I just don't get how you could sit there and be like, oh wow, this is boring, or I don't want to keep doing that.

It's different for everybody because I think for me, I found not that I don't find joy in reading the Bible, but I found a lot of joy in like understanding the Bible. So, like I'm like, you know me, like I love math for some reason. Like, I just love that it makes sense. Yeah, and I've gone into deep dives on like I remember a couple months ago I did a huge, huge deep dive on tithing. Like, where like where does it show up? It shows up before the law and during the law, and Jesus says these things you ought to do and all these things. It's like that to me is like my form of like yeah, like I I do the secret place, I do all these things, like I read my Bible for connection. But what gets me like really interested is like I don't know, studying some stuff. Like to me, well, when it clicks, yes, yeah.

It's like anything, like when you're a kid in school, and like you're like, man, I don't this is boring, or I don't understand the concept. And then all of a sudden, that yeah, and then all of a sudden the teacher plays a game or shows a video or does something on the board and you're like, I know how to do that, I know how to do that now. Like it clicks. Well, it's like if you if you're a visual learner, go watch a cartoon on YouTube about that story and get some information about it. What's the one where they it's a Bible project? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where they draw it draw it out. Like it's like there's something in the world that we live in. We're talking about these terrible meals in the 40s, uh 1840s, right? It's like all this different stuff. Like, we have every resource today to make sure that we're able to learn and to do, especially where we live, right? And especially the opportunities that we have to do. In the number one place ever. It's like we have all of those, then I don't I don't think there's any excuse, really. It's like, well, I'm not really good at reading my Bible. What does that even mean? You don't even have to read it. My wife's into it. Every now and then I'll walk through the kitchen and in the other room I just hear some man's voice reading the Bible, and I'm like, Summer? And she's like, Yeah. I'm like, what are you doing? She's like, I'm listening to the Bible. Like the guy's just reading her the Bible. Like, you don't you don't even have to read it yourself.

And I'm like, this is cool. Like find something that you're interested in. And it's uh you know, the things that the things that entertain us in life, you can easily find similar things or parallels to it in the Bible. Like if you like sci-fi, if you like fantasy, if you like, you know, whatever it is, like you could if you like war, if you like if you like romance, you like whatever it is. I mean, I'm not you know, I'm not reading romance novels, but neither Jesus told a bunch of parables. Yeah, like like it's just there's everything based on, you know, well, I'm not really into that, or I don't really like like you know, you you could you could find anything in there that would appeal to you if you just kind of take the time to dig into it and and like you're saying, do a little research and learn from it. And then like that. That's a complete clip side note to what we were talking about, kind of. But well, no, but I think it's I I again I I mean I brought it up. You you read four verses. Yeah. You read four verses and we talked all about that, you know, out of four verses.

His name was Jay Warner Wallace. He was a LAPD cold case detective, which cold case is like a case that's closed or whatever. Um, like an older case. And so his job as a cold case detective was to take all this, you know, a file from 15 years ago and try to figure out who the killer was based on all these different things. And so he was an atheist, and someone challenged him, he got an argument with somebody, and they were like, Well, why don't you use your cold case skills like a cold case? And treat it like a cold case.

And so he went back and he wrote an entire book about how after he did it, he gave his life to Jesus, and believe there's no way Jesus couldn't be real because he went back and he was like, Well, if this guy had this testimony and this guy had this testimony, and he basically corroborated all of everybody's stories that saw Jesus, that witnessed Jesus, all the different things, and then link them all together.
