In this episode, Pastors Luke Evans and Devon Patton talk about the importance of authenticity, why people can recognize when your faith isn’t genuine, and reflect on the past two weeks at summer camp and the impact of living out what you believe.

The yard right now is not uh they're kind of tearing it up. That's true. I think that's he might be displaced on it. Yeah, he that's probably what it is. But Georgie, Sai has one of those like raccoon hats, like a Davy Crockett looking hat that we got at Bass Pro. And so Georgie found it and she's just been rocking it. Like she thinks it's hilarious. Yeah. So that's it. Sorry, I don't know why I started with that, but there we go. Davy Crockett. That's it. How things just get weaved. That's how it goes here with the New Life podcast. But yeah, these guys were away, and I was here by myself for basically like two weeks. It was quiet. Was it did you enjoy that or no? No, I missed you guys. Oh you always like to hear that. I knew that. I was just wanted to say that on the pot. No, it was quiet. Love that. Some days it was nice. It was really chill, but most of the time. And now they're doing summer camp outside. There's like 200 kids out there running around. 200? No, maybe not. Maybe 150. In between 100 and 200. With leaders, there's definitely 200 people out there. Yeah, probably. Just tearing it up, dude. 100 degrees. You gotta yaw.

My voice is just coming back. That's the worst. You know when I yawn a lot? When I on when I get like not nervous, but like, yeah, kind of like nervous or like anxious. You're a lot like before I preach or something like that. Before I go up to preach, like when we're singing and worship, I worship I yawn a ton. And I think I always think, like, man, people probably see me and like, man, what was he doing last year? Dude, there's this girl in youth group, Caitlin, and it's hilarious because it's like every time we do worship, and then at camp, I notice it like she does, she yawns, and she's just like it's like dude, you didn't want to like cover your mouth or something, but it's so fun. She'll just be like like during during worship. And so now that you said that, I was like, that's that's hilarious. Really keeping you keeping you excited and fresh, you know. You know, you know. Now you're making me yawn again. Look at this guy. Wow, it is contagion.

What we want to talk about. There's no fun facts. There's no nothing. We don't have anything? No, we just chatted for 11 minutes. People have been already skipping this part. Alright, alright, alright. We are talking about what, Mateo? Authenticity. Authenticity. What's it mean? What's the definition? He's got no notes. No, he's not prepared. No notes at all. Being authentic.

You know what? I think this applies. Sorry, this is just what I thought about. But we were talking about this yesterday. Mateo came over, had some pizza for lunch with our friend Pastor Danny. And it it was we were talking about like this old furniture that my wife is obsessed with. Because like we when we moved everything in, like it's a thousand pounds. Like it's all. And so last night I was like giving my wife a hard time while they were there, and I shouldn't have, I apologize. Um, but I was giving her a hard time what after they left to, and she was like, You have to understand, like, this is what people pay for. Like, this is like they want authentic stuff, they want real stuff, and like you were talking about that is like authenticity, and we're talking about that. And it's like, yeah, they I'm like, can we just go to IKEA and buy some outdoor furniture or buy something that's not like this? Ikea. I'm like, it's fine, like it'll and Nicole's like, yeah, but these pieces are they're vintage, they've lasted, they've standed like the test of time. Like these outdoor, this outdoor furniture has been outside for 20 years, and it's still great. You just gotta repaint it and fix it up, and it'll be awesome. It'll last another 20 years. And it's the same, obviously, with people. It's like the real people are the ones that last. The ones that are authentic are the ones that will stand the test of time that will through the problems, through the storms, through the ups and the downs, through the the bad weather of life, it's like those are the people that that will remain. And so I think it's an important topic for us to talk about. But it just made me think of of yesterday. But I'm like, oh, it's the same with people, it's the same in our relationship. Yeah, yeah, and it's the same with our relationship with God, right? I mean, when you see people who are saved, uh, and then they go through some stuff and all of a sudden you don't see them in church anymore, or you don't, you know, you don't see them as frequently, they don't they're not reading their Bible as much, they're not doing the things they're supposed to do, whatever, they kind of fall by the wayside. It it makes you wonder if it was ever real to begin with. And I think in order to last as a Christian, to go through some stuff um and hold fast to what it is that God's done in your life, right? That like you're saying, that realness, that authenticity of you know, if it's real, you'll make it, if it's real, you'll last. Like in a in anything, in a friendship, in a marriage, in your relationship with God, like real, true, authentic relationships mean that you put up with some stuff and you you you push through the difficult times. Certainly God has been real enough with us to put up with us, you know. We can learn how to be real with other people. And when we're not real and we're not authentic, I think people see right through that. Oh, definitely. Eventually, eventually, sure. Yeah, and like you said, like the people with their faith. I think on the other side, a flip side of it too, is I think a lot of time we see people who they get the miracle, like God answers the prayer. Like it's not like oh, problems arose and they stepped away from their faith, which happens all the time. But on the opposite side of that, you see people who they come to church because they need a miracle, they need God to move, they need Him financially to bless them, they need a healing in their body, and then that happens, and then they walk away as well. And so on the opposite side of that, it's like whatever it is, the authentic faith will remain peaks, valleys, like whatever is going on in your life, whatever situation it is, those are the real relationships that step through. But like you said, people will see through that. We see it more often than not dealing with teenagers like and young adults and high school kids. Because like they could read you like a book, like immediately they'll know, like we've had students who we've had lead not leaders or or they've had teachers or people and leadership above them. And it's like, well, why don't you like that person? Like, why don't they respond? Like, why are they not like picking up? And it's like, dude, because they know you're fake. Like they know it's all fluff, they know you're just trying to like encourage like just just again, just give them some type of answer or something, but you're not actually invested in in what they want and who they are, because it's not authentic, because it's not real. Yeah, it's easy to it's easy to what's the saying? It's like the for students it's like they don't care what you know until they know you care. Yeah, and something like that. And it's like that's the truth. It's like well, they gotta see it, they gotta see it lived out in your life. And if it's not being lived out in your life, if it's something that is unauthentic, it's pretty easy. Well, that's one thing for Pastor Luke will pat him on the back here is and I've tried to mirror it in my own life, but it was like Pastor Luke is a real person. Like it's not like there's pastors and there's leaders that are like we were at camp with like some other youth pastors, and they're like, I'm like making a joke or or saying something or talking about just regular life or complaining about something, and they're like, Well, you're the pastor. I don't know if like you like, and I'm like, we're all real people here, like we are genuine people, and like in the best way, like making sure that like faith is normal and it's it's like it's something that I that we can kind of we've looked as us in this room, like we've looked at your life and been like, oh, that's that's a faith that it makes sense, it's easy, but at the same time, like we've always known no, this is a like an authentic person, like this is just a real person, like you know what I mean. It's like it's not it hasn't made our faith look like it's unattainable or it's this this other thing. It's like no no no, this is real life, and so well I appreciate that. But and I also think I think that what in whatever you're called to in life, especially as a pastor, but if you're just saved and you're just a Christian, like we're not called to be like I'm not called to be to act like a pastor, like I'm not an actor, right? And I think a lot of times you see, like you're talking about, like you'll see people, depending on what situation they're in, and you're like, there's no way you're really like that in real life. You know what I mean? And so I think the more authentic you can be with how how you communicate to people, because I think that's how Jesus was, right? Like Jesus was the same to everyone that he interacted with. And then Paul obviously writes about you know, to this person, I'm I'm I'm the like I can interact with that person, I can interact with this person, I can interact with this person. And if you're a different person everywhere you go, like when I go, when I'm at home, when I'm at church, when I'm with you guys, when I'm at my men's league, when I'm out at the store, like if I'm a different person at all those places, it's gonna get A really old really fast, like hard to keep up with, like all the different facades and faces that you put on. And it's just way more easier to just be like, Man, I'm just the same person, like everywhere that I go. Like, I would hope and pray that the guys on my men's league that don't know Jesus, that see me interacting with them when they come visit church on a Sunday or they come to something, like I'm the exact same person in those two places. Yeah, like I don't try to put on a front, and I think that that's important for everybody to understand that the aut the authenticity of Jesus is what drew people to him. The fact that he would sit with a woman at the well, that he would have dinner with Zacchaeus, that he would be this person to everybody and be real with people was what people were drawn to. And the reason people pushed away and why Jesus pushed away from the Pharisees and people like that is because of their fakeness, right? Of their, you know, your lofty religious pride, but I know behind the scenes, you know, you're full of this, you're full of that. Like no nobody, nobody's drawn to people like that. People are drawn to real, authentic people. Yeah, and I think that part of that, again, like you said, because growing up when I was a kid, like a teenager and in college, like I was like faking it in my faith at certain moments and certain times, and it's just exhausting. Like it's like it's physically, mentally, spiritually exhausting. Like you're just trying, okay. I gotta remember not to say this around this person, I gotta remember to not uh do this with these people and and do all this. Act a certain way around a certain way when I get home from college, I gotta be this person. That's not it's like it's exhausting, but also at the same time, like you said, like you're putting in the work, you're spending time in prayer, you're spending time in God's word, you're going to church, you're serving, you're doing all these different things, and that becomes the authentic, that becomes the new norm, that becomes easier. And so it's like for me, that's what it was was once I had rededicated my life to Christ, those new normal, like other people recognized it and saw it and was real. And then my even my relationships, I talked about it a few weeks ago, even my relationships with non-Christians became stronger because of that. They knew I wasn't just faking it to try and hang out with them. No, they knew, okay, this is who I was. I've rededicated my life to Christ, and they accepted me for it, and we moved on from that. And that's how you know that those friends are real as well, even if they're authentic friendships. Right, those those authentic friendships of like, you know, when we do something or we let somebody down and all of a sudden they just cut us off. It's like, well, how real how authentic was that friendship? Like, how how real was that? And and I think that that's that's important to find people in your life, or even in a marriage or whatever it is, to find people in your life that are real enough with you and allow you to be yourself around them, so that that realness is, you know. I mean, we've known each other obviously almost your whole life, and so like you would have to do something extremely egregious to me. Like probably you'd probably have to kill somebody close to me for me to just be like, Oh, I'm never talking to Devin again, like I'm I'm over him. Like I that maybe is too long of a leash. But you know, like you you it's if it's real, it's real. Like you don't just you know, you don't just turn your back on people or forget about people or avoid people just because you know something's gone on. If it's if it's real, let it be real. And like you're saying, you know, obviously me being a youth pastor all those years now, you being a youth pastor, these guys working in youth, you know, teenagers I think are the the hardest one, like the most nerve-wracking one to be around because you you don't want to come off as fake because the minute you do, they will not respond to you. Yeah. At all. Like you you've lost your window to communicate to them. Oh, definitely. It's just you have to be uh authentic, real, genuine. You have to actually care about them. Like, and that's why it takes like one of the big things is like knowing their name. Like you know what I mean? It's huge, like for teenagers, like knowing their name, like following up, checking in on them, like Emiline from Youth Show. Always gets like so mad, like because her mom posts on Facebook like everything that they're doing, which is great. Like, carry body stuff. Like, but it's like stuff like that, or like they'll go on vacation. I remember one time I was like, Did you have a good time on vacation? She was like, That's so weird. How did you know I was on vacation?

I don't know what to tell you, but like stuff like that. Like, they have to know, and you're paying attention and noticing like the things that they're doing and and what's going on. Like, if they had they got a new job, you're asking them, Well, how'd the how'd work go? Like, how'd everything go? Like, you're you're actually invested in what they're doing, and or like uh what's them called? I used to drive Victor home. Like Victor, he's working here this week. Like, I love Vic. Like, I used to drive Johnny home sometimes after youth, and it's like like these different things, like just again, just investing in them, letting them know, like, hey, if I ever need a ride, like they're gonna be there. If I ever need money, like we gotta go, or I need to go and I need something to eat, like they're gonna take me to go make get McDonald's and we'll have some fun. So it's like those little things that kids pick up on immediately. Sorry, I don't know what happened. Um, yeah, so the kids they pick up on it quick, like really, really quick. But it's not that's what like me and Nicole were talking about it in ministry, is like these guys who like we've talked about it before, they like give up or like youth ministry. It's like it's not hard, like I I get it, like there are seasons where it's difficult, but it's like when it comes to like actually like encouraging the students or like providing stuff and opportunities for them, like it's very simple. Like Tuesday mornings we go to Starbucks and like we're just there and it's just available, or we'll do soul food on Fridays in July, and it's like it's just available and it's just there.

Well and it's like what else are we doing?

I'll never forget when we used to go to the when we went to the dream center out in LA those couple of times. Great trips, great trips, yeah. And I'll I'll never forget the the guy that led the team, like the homeless teams and stuff. He said, he was like, we don't, he's like, the only thing, the reason that we've lasted this long, he's like, is nothing special that we're doing. The only reason that we're this successful in our homeless ministry is because we are in the exact same place, the exact same time, every time every single week. And he's like, the people know all these new people come in and out. We want to help, we want to help, we want to do this. He's like, we don't do anything special, all we do is be consistent, and the fact that we're consistent and we're real, even in this type of work, is why people show up over and over and over again, and why God has done what he's done through us. And I'll never forget that because I was like, man, like you're saying, I know I know we trash, you know, I I don't mean to sound like the old guy and trash like young ministers or youth pastors or stuff like that, but like there's no way you can come into a youth group, say, Hey guys, I'm your new youth pastor, and then 18 months later you leave and think that those kids are gonna think that you're authentic or real. It's just or it's just not gonna have an impact on. No, it's just not, but it's the same in a very small sense of like like we we've talked about it before, but Drew, my brother, shout out big Drew, he's listening right now. Oh, you know he is. Is he invites his friends from work to church every Sunday? And what do they know? Drew's going to be there, right? Like he's he's not a pastor on staff, he's not in ministry, he's just he loves our church, he's grown up in this church, he wants to invite his friends to church, and so what is it? That's an authentic relationship, that's a genuine relationship, that's consistency that it's showing up. It's like anytime you show up, dude, I'm gonna invite you every week. And one of those weeks that you show up, I will be there. And it's like I'll be there every single time. And it's like it's the same not just in ministry, it's in our everyday life. It's like people need to see that. You want your family members to come to church, you gotta continue to to tell them about Jesus, you gotta continue to invite them, but also you gotta be here. So when they do show up, when they do call you on that week that they need to come to church, you're here regardless. Yeah. I mean, we gave you a camera and a mic this week because you were at camp last week. Uh he said he wanted to share some stuff. What what did you see as far? I mean, that so that week that you just spent at camp with those kids, you now have become something to them, right? Like a core memory. We all have memories of our camp counselors and like the moments and the times that we had. Like I have pictures praying over him, praying over you, praying over you. Great idea. No, um this past week was like in was incredible. One of the reasons I wanted a mic was to just talk about the impact being a leader has on not only you, but the kids as well. Like you guys just talked about the fact that you remember praying over us. Like you remember doing and we remember that. Like that's a fond memory that we can look back on and like like associate not only our relationship with you, but now our relationship with God, because those weeks had an effect on us. Yeah. Like going into this past week was a little nerve-wracking, like, because I know how important it is to be authentic. I know how important it is to take this line of work seriously because these kids are going through stuff. Like these kids have real lives at home. They go through things that we don't always see and we may not always have the answer for. But staying rooted in your word, staying rooted in God, having the um dialogue with them that the word speaks through you was like a huge point in this past week that like I really wanted to um I really wanted to make it.

Jake has been to camp, but like over the past couple of years, he hasn't been there because he's been like he's a family now, he's a full-time job, but seeing them really like get after it, like, like pray over the kids, like like foster those relationships, grow them to something where it's not just like I'm here to watch you and make sure you don't like kill yourself while you're here, but like I I want to see you grow as a person. I want to see your relationship with God like grow into something that you're gonna fall back on when you get older, and that this wouldn't just be a week that is great. Like we had fun, like we competed, we almost won. Shout out Orange Team. Orange we were we were up for a while, orange code. It almost doesn't count, but it's all right. Yeah, yeah.

Um, but at the core root of camp, it's about uh it's about like growing your relationship with God as a kid and having those memories that like when you're older and you're going through something, you can think back like, man, I remember as a kid when I was I was going through this and I was going through that, or maybe I was going through nothing, but I felt great being in a in a in a situation and a community that believed in the same things that like everyone did and like really got after it. It was genuinely a phenomenal week. And those kids are wild.

Yeah, they are they're so crazy, but they're so much fun. They're the best. They are the best. And that's your hope, right? You hop your hope and your prayer for all the kids that go to camp, or just kids that come to youth group, or the next generation of our church, kids, youth, young adults, is that it becomes something so real to them, something so authentic that they can't run from it, right? Like that's what we pray. Like, God, help help them to never be able to run away from you. Like, help them for this thing to be so real that when they do try to run away, the minute they do something they know they shouldn't be, it just that camp moment, that those real authentic conversations and people praying over them and worship moments, like that those just pop back into their mind, and whatever it is that they're doing, they feel disgusted doing, and they just run back to you because of that that realness and because of that authenticity of of the moment. And I think that's the test, right? That that's the judge of how real it is is you know how how easily, how easily, whether it's a relationship, whether it's your your spiritual walk, your relationship with God, whatever it is, the true test of authenticity is how difficult is it for me to walk away from this, right? Whether it's a friend, whether it's a marriage, whether it's my relationship with God, if it's real, it'll be really, really hard to walk away from it. And that's what you gotta pray for the next generation of the church is that it would be just so much more difficult for them to walk away from God than it was for us or the generation before, the generation before that they would that the experience they have would be so real that it would just change and transform. I wonder who that is, dude.

Like, they authentically, the students like authentically worship, which is really great. Like they do here too. I don't want you to think that they don't because they do. But it was great. It's because Blake, Spencer's brother, he helps us out in so many avenues as far as like media, but playing an instrument and different stuff. So him and Caleb and Colby, they don't have to be a good thing. Work in the summer too. He's out there working. So it's like, but they don't often get a chance. We try to as much as we can, but to just be in worship, to just be in service and just and just enjoy it. And so it was cool. One of the nights I got to go up and like just put my hand on their shoulder and pray with them. But Blake like always just like goes up and he's just like on his boy's shoulder. He just like goes up and like every time pray for it. It's the best. Yeah, it's so much. Oh, the camp huddles. It's great, but he's just like that's just genuine worship. And then there was another situation with one of our students, Becca, that she came up to me and she was like, Hey, Pastor Devin. She's like, My friend, like, really needs prayer. Like, she like really needs somebody to pray for. Like, is there a female leader that you could find? And I was like, Not right now, but I was like, but go pray with her. Like, and she was like, like authenticity, like she was like, I don't think I can do that. Like, I don't know about that. Like, I don't think I can. And I was like, I was like, I'm like, please. I'm like, what she needs right now is somebody to pray for, and what is available right now is you. Like, so I was like, you don't have to pray in her ear, you don't have to pray out loud, but you know God, like you can pray to him and you can go pray for her. And so it was like that was like Tuesday night or something like that. And so she went and prayed for and she did it. And then on Thursday night, there was a girl like up at the altar who nobody was praying for, and out from the back came Becca, and she, I'm gonna start. I get an emotional. Yeah, dude. But it's like you can't talk about that. She was just like, she just like sprinted to the front because like her friend needed to like prayer, and it was like, oh, it's like, what is that? Like, it was this growth because of like this action, but it's that authenticity of like, I don't know how to do this, I need help. All she needed was somebody just tell her you can do it. Like, and it was like, and she did, and so and then at the end of the week, she was up running, rushing up to the front to pray for her friends, and I was like, Man, that's sick. That's awesome, dude. You could we could you could do a whole nother podcast just about stuff like that, like just it was cool, stepping out in faith, right? Yeah, finding that next week, but but that's like a perfect example, and I know I know who she is, that's why I got emotional because she's a sweet kid, and like like I I said it on Sunday of finding the middle ground between like I either have too much religious pride, which we see at camp a lot with like you know, kids like the minute someone needs prayer, like the kids are running to the front, like ready to push people over because they want to pray out so loud for everybody, and then the kids over here like that that are like I could never do that. I couldn't do that, and it's finding that middle ground of like her humility to come up to you to say, Hey, can you find a female leader?

Um but seeing throughout the week progressively her get more confident is the wrong word, but like comfortable in in being a leader and being there to support and help and just be there for the kids was like was one of the best things I've ever seen. Like, especially being her fiance, like seeing that growth from the beginning to the end of the week, where at the end of the week she was laying hands on kids, like leading a full small group by herself. She was taking on very hard questions, and the text that she got, man, like it was yeah, dude.

That was sorry, now we're just like talking about all the cool stuff. Um it was like sick to me. Like there's the Snack Shack after Sick in a good way. Sick in a good way. It was really cool to me. That at the end of service, there's like a time for the kids to have free time and go to the snack shack and stuff. And it was like every night, except for the last night, because we had ended early anyway, but it was like the first three nights of camp for senior high, like our kids were so invested in the like conversation piece of like growth together, like authentic authentic conversation, authentic growth, being real with each other after service that like we had other youth groups, and that's fine, and and like they finished with what they were doing, and they're running to go get mozzarella sticks and ice cream and stuff, which is great. But our kids were just like so that was so secondary to them, which was they were locked in. Like, it was like, no, we want to get through these questions, we want to keep having conversations, we want to talk about what we're dealing with, and it was like like kids like testimonies from Spence and Jake and Soph and Chrissy. It's like the kids are praying for one another, like there was a group of girls at the end that they just stayed, and like one of the girls was dealing with something, and they were like, Alright, well, let's just pray now. And so they all laid hands on her and prayed. And it was the boys were sitting there afterwards, and like all these other kids, like at high in high school, that's all I'm thinking about, right? It's like I'm going out and hang with my friends, I'm going to get a milkshake, I'm going to like do whatever. And it's like, nah, I just want to stay here present in this moment. Like, it's not gonna last forever. Like, I want this right now, and it was well, and I think the cool part is you know, you said something nice about me, so I'll say something nice about you. I think the I think the cool part is is I don't think that that happens by accident. No. I think that you guys have developed a culture within New Life Youth of a culture of conversation, if you will. Yeah. Of you have 632, you have soul food, you do small groups once a month, you have Bible study once a month. Like you've created a culture where kids are comfortable talking to each other and talking to their leaders about their problems, but not just in a because they're real and because it's authentic. Yeah. Not just talking to them about it, but also praying about it, trying to help them work through it. Because anybody can go up to anybody and say, Hey, I have this going on, and anybody can say, Oh man, I'll pray for you, and then just go their separate ways. It's another thing to say, man, why do you feel like that? I wonder what what's going on in your life that makes you feel right, that that culture of conversation of like, man, let's hash this out and then let's come up with a solution for it. And so I don't think that that happens by accident. I think that happens because of the culture that's been created where kids know, man, this place is this place is real. These people, these people care about me, these leaders care about me, my youth pastor cares about me, Mateo cares about me, the people at camp care, like that. Again, we've been talking about auth authenticity, so to put a bow on it, like that that's what comes out of being authentic. Yeah. Is like we can dig deeper into these things, we can get closer to each other because I don't have to worry about them stabbing me in the back or them running away or them leaving or quitting or this or that. Like we're connected on a deeper level because we're connected through Christ, but we're also connected through this authenticity in Christ that we all have. Yeah, and so I think that that I think that that's just a testimony of what's been going on, and we just see it all because that's what happens with God, right? Like you see it all come to fruition, like you plant the seed, you you you cultivate it, you water it, and and then you watch it grow, and that's that's what comes out of it is you know your experience, you know, and you know, the the things you're talking about of all these kids that can't like that's that's what comes out of it. And so I I you know you can't I can't put a price on on authenticity. Definitely. That's great. Good stuff. Great week. Awesome week. Great week. It's awesome. That's the best. So thank you again.
