Hello, welcome back to another New Life podcast. We're so glad that you decided to join us today. I'm very glad. Luke does not seem very glad. I'm super fake glad. I'm just worried about Devin because he has the hiccups. I have the hiccups, but I think I've talked through them. Dang it. What? You wanted me to have the hiccups on it. Just one. No, I can't fake it. It's something you can't fake. No, you can't fake it. Not good though. That's like burps. Like pretty well. Oh my goodness. Never mind. Forget what I was just about to say to you. Alright, moving on. Welcome to the new live podcast, episode number 39, we've been told. Really? That's what it says on that sheet over there. Yep. What are we doing for 40? Nothing. Nothing. We gotta get ready for 50. Oh. Or 52. 52, 50. 52. That's half a year. What? Immediately, Mike dawned. Yeah. Week two. Spencer has a mic again, but we there was a comment on YouTube that said they were excited about Spencer having a mic and a camera. I like it took it. And my mom texted us and said that she thought that was great. She really enjoyed Spencer's part. Really? Yeah. Then she said I was her favorite, but no, she didn't. She said we were her favorite idiots. Yes. That was kind of hurtful. It's it's probably true. But that's our love language as a family. So it was really nice. I felt I felt very endeared. Is that a word? Nope. Like a deer.

SPEAKER_05But so we Spencer does have a mic, but he does not have a camera. We had a conflict today with the cameras. We do have one announcement that we need to make before we get started, though. SPEAKER_05We used to we're all waiting for you. We've been waiting patiently for weeks now because I think it was three, two, or three podcasts. Calm down. That you said you had last PowerPoint presentation.
SPEAKER_03Before we left for camp, which was a month ago.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So I have this PowerPoint that I want to share with everybody. I shared it with my wife Nicole. She does not think it's funny, but which probably means it's hilarious. Yeah, that's probably true. No offense to Nicole. No, she's she doesn't think I'm funny, which is fine. Um, so this is a new segment called From the Mind of Devin Pad. I thought of this the other day and immediately just wrote them down and then had to build a slideshow around it because I was like this. I love that you actually built a PowerPoint. You didn't just want to tell us about it. You wanted to show us. Did you put it up on the screen?
SPEAKER_03You haven't sent it to me.
SPEAKER_05Oh airdrop. Don't peek at it. Go just go and put it full screen and then we'll scroll. Okay. I told you we should have tested this before. With a different PowerPoint. PowerPoint. PowerPoint. PowerPoint. Alright, so there's a lot of superhero movies coming out. So I was thinking, I'm like, there's gotta be some new names. Dude, you love superheroes. But instead of like making a new name for them, I was like, what if they were superheroes based on they just got another letter? Or like one letter changed, right? So like how drastic would that be? Right? One letter was removed. One letter was removed or added or just one letter. Ron man? Yeah, that'd be good. Alright, well, let's just see if he's gonna.

SPEAKER_05Alright, honorable mentions. These ones are honorable mentions because they're not my best work, but also like some of them, some of them, like I added a letter, which I wasn't supposed to. Is Rocket? Yep. Racket. He's a crime fighting racket, tennis racket. So not as powerful as cool, but kind of a pogo stick gets around like. Yeah, that's exactly how he's jacked, dude. SPEAKER_07He's got a cave, he can fly, but he's got black windows. You guys like that? Alright, cool. Beast. Yeast. Looks like? It's wheat. I don't know. Not at all. Not at all. In his superhero form, that's what he looks like, okay? And does what? What? Gluten. If you have like, yeah, celiacs disease, this guy's your worst knee. Just gluten-free people are in trouble with yeast around.
SPEAKER_05Alright, Ronan, he's a bad guy, and then he becomes Roman. He just got pizza in the vest. Sick vest. I think that's sick. So those are the honorable mentions. We got a couple superstars. Alright, here we go. Superstar number one, Daredevil, which arguably not a superstar anyway. Worst superhero of all time. He's blind, dude. Yeah. That's debatable. Handicap. Darn Devil. Ooh. Instead of Daredevil. And this guy, he I didn't want to even put a picture of the devil. Give him the thing. So I just put a devil dog instead. We don't need to scare.
SPEAKER_07We don't want to give him the credit.
SPEAKER_04But this one is just taking over the south. Yeah. He's like, that darn devil's out again. And so that's what's happening here with that guy instead of the daredevil. Alright, the thing. Toe thing.
SPEAKER_07You think, oh, maybe he's gonna change things.
SPEAKER_04Dude, I hate those thumb things. But it's one of the thumb things, but it's a toe instead from Spy Kids. Dude, I hate those things.
SPEAKER_05Which great movie is so creepy. Yeah. Great movie. We should watch it on the pod. Alright, Ant-Man. Okay. And man. This guy, alright, so he's like, it's all good things, right? It's like he can grow really big, and he can grow, he can be really small, and he has super strength. But also, because it's and it keeps going, and it's like, and also has irritable bowel syndrome. And the hangnail. There's always an and. He did something really good.
SPEAKER_04And now he's not doing that. He's good at improv, man.

SPEAKER_05And he throws sliders at Who goes down a slide like that? Slider Man, dude. Clearly. You haven't read the comics? Look at it. That's a picture from the comics. Alright, Iron Man. Iron fan. Again, it was just an old fan, so I was like, that's not gonna be very good for fighting things. So I gave him a lightsaber in arms. In arms. Also pogo stick. Yeah. This next one, uh, the the kids will like this iceman, he turns into Ickman. Um and so he's just always giving you the Ick. Uh so it's I looked up some of the top icks is like BO. So like he's got the uh sandals, open toed shoes, and then under six feet tall are like common icks. So he's just Ickman. Oh man Yeah, it was like a real look in the mirror. I was like, man, I'm Ickman. Wasp? The wash. It's just some old Italian grandma doing the wash.
SPEAKER_07Oh, what's that behind her? A bazooka! Yeah, so you better watch out for the wash. She's gonna get you. Yeah, that's what I thought.
SPEAKER_04You thought it was just some nice old lady. It's not.

I got one already. So we'll start working on that for sure. And then she said, for topics of the podcast, I think that you should all pick a favorite Bible story. She said, I like that Luke was talking about the story of Elisha on Elijah on that Sunday and how interesting that story was, and some people might not know the stories. Maybe some of like the most craziest or most surprising, or the ones that really struck a chord with you and why when you were growing up. Um and so today, because we want you as our viewers and listeners to know that when we tell you to send an email, we mean it, and we're gonna read it, and we're gonna read it, and then we're gonna do it. Doing it. And so today, we are gonna talk about some Bible stories, some of our favorites, some of the most meaningful. I think Pastor Devin has volunteered to go first. So, wait, are you sharing one or no? No. Oh, I want to hear yours. Okay. Well, I and then I had said to the to these clowns, as we're often referred in our meeting that he wasn't paying attention to earlier, so that we should do like I have like one in the New Testament that I really like, and then I have one in the old testament that I really like. So I figured we could do that, and then we might even be able to throw in some miracles. We can categorize this. We we could literally tell stories for a year. Forever. We have a whole kind of two weeks on stories. Um, so we were in our soul food last week. We have soul food for the teenagers on Fridays. Um, we had 40 teenagers here reading their Bibles, eating lunch and stuff. It was awesome. It's a lot of Chick-fil-A, it's a lot of Chick-fil-A. Went through it in about 18 seconds. It was crazy. Um, but so we were reading an axe, which is my favorite book. Do you have a favorite book? Like overall, uh, yeah. All right, guys.
SPEAKER_04I don't know what's happening today, but this guy is just giving me absolutely nothing, dude.
SPEAKER_05We didn't even fight before this.
SPEAKER_04First Samuel is my favorite book.
SPEAKER_03It's mine. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04First Samuel. Guys, let's be original. Can you think of a different one then? He already called that dibs. I should have said it first. I know you love Philippians. Let's stop flipping around. Galatians. Galatians, that's what it is. Um, I know. I know you love Galatians. It doesn't look like a Galatians.
SPEAKER_05You're not gonna ask Spencer what his is? Oh, Spence. Philippians. Spencer's looking in his Bible right now. He's like, what's one of these? What books are there? Palms. Palms. Spencer's about to get married, so Song of uh Solomon's his favorite, right? Oh boy. So Acts is my favorite, favorite book. Um I love the like Paul's conversion, the early church, Paul's conversion, and then the the missionary journeys that he goes on in these books in these stories. Uh so we read it. I obviously picked for soul food. We read in Acts chapter 14, um, because I was just happening to be reading in that. Whatever. Um, and then Acts chapter 16 was a couple days later, and it reminded me of this story, and it's it's probably my favorite in the New Testament if I had to pick one that was outside of Jesus, which is what I was trying to do. But in Acts chapter 16, we see Paul gets a call um from Macedonia. Like the Holy Spirit reveals to him that there's people in Macedonia who they need to hear the gospel. Um, they need to hear um and it's it's Paul's like first entrance into that portion of Europe. And so um it's cool because Paul is going, Paul and Silas are going and they're traveling, and it he has this dream because Paul has he wants to go to Asia, like that's where he's told God, like, we need to go to Asia, like that's what we need to do. Like the people of Asia need to hear about the gospel, we need to go tell them that's that's what the plan is, and that's what I'm supposed to be doing. And God tells him and reveals him, like, you will, like, you will go. Like, I I'll tell like there is an opportunity. You would the gospel will get to Asia. Um, but it's the Holy Spirit, it says that he prevents them from preaching the word in Asia at that time, and that night, Paul has a vision in verse 9. It says, A man from Macedonia, northern Greece, was standing there pleading with him, come over to Macedonia and help us. And so in verse 10 it says, and so we, it's talking about Paul, Silas, and Timothy, decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having concluded that God was calling us to preach the good news there. And so, this is just the beginning of the story. I'll share the second part of the story. Uh, Mateo questioned if I'd be able to talk about it. Yes, I'll be able to talk about it. He actually questioned that we'd be able to talk for uh 30 minutes. No, we can handle it. But so Paul, the thing that stood out to me is again, we've talked about it a thousand times, so we don't need to again go over it. But in verse 10, like the Holy Spirit tells Paul, Paul has this desire in his heart, like, I need to go to Asia. I want to go to Asia. This is what I need to do. And it's a righteous desire, right? He he wants to go do it for the right reasons, to go preach the gospel, to go share the good news, to go tell people about Jesus and and share his conversion. And the Holy Spirit's like, not right now, it's not your time. What I need you to do right now is to go over to Macedonia, to go to Greece, to go to Europe, and to spread the good news. And so, just like Paul's blind um obedience, like so we decided to leave for Macedonia at once. It's like it's not all right, let's think about that. Did God really call me to go to Macedonia? Wait, maybe that vision wasn't, maybe it was just me, maybe it was just a dream, maybe it was something else. No, Paul says, you know what, this is what I need to do, and he goes. And it's just it was it's it's interesting to me. Again, Paul Paul redirects or uh God redirects Paul into something else that that again is more pressing in God's time frame, even though Paul didn't really understand it at the time. It's funny that you said that because I just had a conversation with someone the other day who did something that they felt in their mind was right and biblical and correct, and it was, yeah, but they as we were conversating and learning about the situation, they did it too quickly, and they did it, you know, and and it you just brought that up. It made me think of, you know, sometimes even when our intentions are to do something right, yeah, when we rush ahead and we don't ask God first, sometimes God will get us to the place where we can do that thing that we want to do, that great thing. I want to go do this, I want to God, I want to do this for you. And God's like, I'll let you go do that for me. But before you do that, I need you to do this. Yeah, and and I think sometimes we have to be careful that we don't rush ahead of God's plan of man, I want to go do this, and it's not nothing wrong, it's nothing sinful, it's actually something that we want to bless God by doing, but at the same time, when we don't pray, when we don't talk to him, when we don't ask him, what is it you want sometimes God'll say, wait, and sometimes we'll say, Go do this first, you know. I I wanna, you know, I wanna I wanna save my whole family. It's like, yeah, but you haven't even told anybody at work about Jesus yet, or I want to do this and that. And uh, you know, we might not always get a a vision like like Paul, but like you're saying, eventually Paul does everything that he wants to achieve and wants to do, and he wants to, again, go, but it says there in verse 10, like he's calling us to preach the good news there first, to go to or to go to Macedonia, to go to Greece, to go to Europe, and make sure the gospel is preached there first. And so I just thought that that was was interesting. So that's just the background of what my story is. So the story that I really like in this New Testament is Acts chapter 16, starting in verse 11. There's only I think there's five verses. Um and so I'll just read them, I'm sorry, but so you guys can get the context of the story. So we boarded a boat to Troaz, which is a port um city at this time, and he sailed straight across the island of Samothra. I don't know, sorry if I'm saying that that wrong. But the next day we landed at Neapolis, and there we reached Philippi, a major city in the district of Macedonia and the Roman colony. We've heard about Philippi before, and we've stayed there several days. On the Sabbath we went a little way outside the city to a riverbank, and we thought people would be meeting for prayer, and we sat down to speak with some women who had gathered there. And one of them was Lydia, um a merchant of expensive purple cloth who worshipped God, and she listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying. And she was baptized along with other members of her household, and she asked us to be her guests. If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord, she said, Come and stay at my home, and she urged us until we agreed. And so Paul is going on this missionary journey, and it's a story that again some people have heard before, some people have never read it before, or it's only five verses, and it seems insignificant in the sense of but this is in Macedonia, Europe at this time. This is the first time that they're preaching the gospel. Paul is going and spreading the word of the good news in this area, right? That's not in um Israel at the time, that's not in this way. No, this is they've sailed over to Philippi, they've gotten there, they've made the trip there, and now they are sharing. And so this isn't just another city I wrote down. This is a major hub for European trade. This is a big deal. Like they're there, there's gonna be a ton of people coming through. This is a huge thing as far as the expansion of the gospel, which is massive, right? It's like what we know today, these are the little things that in scripture that we sometimes overlook, but it's like because we see what Christianity is right now, like we see the global reach that we have right now, which is wild. So it's it all had to start somewhere, it all had to start somewhere. It's a and a seemingly ordinary conversation beside a river eventually spreads Christianity across an entire continent. So Paul is there and he sits down and they go down because it's a Sabbath and they want to spend some time in prayer and they want to rest, and they go down and they meet this woman named Lydia, who Lydia um one thing I wrote down was like she was successful before she met Jesus, which is another thing that that there are people that we meet in spreading the gospel where we want to share the gospel, or there are people that they come like this lady has an established life. She is a Like the things that we note from from the purple cloth, which purple at the time um it represents royalty, right? It represents it's expensive, and so these are these are little things in the in the scripture and context that we could take from from her. She has her own home. She's a businesswoman. She in the time where women are not valued or not um represented in the way that we are to hustle her. So God opens her heart, she receives Christ, she gets baptized, and because of that, now her household is baptized. Now, because of that, the people that she works with want to follow Christ. Now, because of that, we see the spread of the gospel. And so it's this story, again, that again again, it's it's really cool to me because of how we could glance over it. It's four verses at the in the middle of Acts. Um, but uh the one thing that we see is is God's God told him to do that, and then he he goes to to Philippi, he sits with this woman, just talks with her, she accepts Christ, and then we see it kind of further get into Europe. And it's it's just this small little story. But the thing about Lydia that I I get really encouraged by was hospitality was her first ministry. So she's called to be a Christian, she's called to uh follow God. God opens her heart, she gets baptized, her family gets baptized, and what's her first response? Come and stay with me. Like, let me let me take care of you. Like, you're gonna go and you're gonna go on and preach the gospel, you're gonna go do those things. And hospitality. After the baptism, she says, Come and stay at my house. Her home becomes Paul's base for operation in Philippi. That's where he can stay, he can go recuperate, he can do the things that he needs to do. Um, many people think that the church that was there, because Paul would have been there, started there. Yeah, and so it's like that's crazy. But one woman's dining room may have become Europe's first house church. Like, if you think about it, which is wild. So it's and the lesson there is I wrote down is not everyone gets to preach from the pulpit. Not everybody has the the spiritual leadership of of leading thousands of people. Some people build the kingdom by opening their homes and having hospitality. And so it's just this for me, this really, really cool story of like this woman who just again, she's a leader at the time, she has a house, she has what she has available to her. She notices Paul and then welcomes him in, and then we see the again. Yeah, we see Paul who establishes a church there and then writes letters to them, and it's different things, and it's it's established that we know about today. The book of Philippians is the church in Philippi. Yeah, right, which is wild. So yeah, it's I know it's a weird story, sorry, but I don't think it's weird at all. I think that it I think that it brings a reminder to people that there's layers to this stuff. So like when you're when you're reading God's word, I know you know when we talk about the secret place, we tell people to only read a couple verses because when you really just dig in, you know, you you you grab a handful of verses, whether it's three or four or five, whatever, and then you start to really just like dig into it and like, man, let me try to like pick this apart and like think about this, and like you're saying, like you when you start to like you could easily read over that and just like glance over, like, oh God told Paul to go here, and so he did because he's Paul, and he got somebody saved because he's Paul, and it's no big deal here. But then when you start to like peel back the layers, like you're doing with it, which is how we should read scripture of like, man, I you know, you're you're you're peeling back this layer. Well, let's think about where he went, and let's let's think about the context of the time that he went. Let's think about how he talked to this person and what came of him talking to this person. And so you took five verses and you start peeling back all the layers, and that's the coolest part about scripture is that it's literally like there's there's so much, even just in five verses. That and again, the maybe this is the title for this, is like the ripple effect of her what I just got chilled. Yeah, but it's like I love that. I'm freaking out, but it's like that, it's like of Lydia's faithfulness, right? Of Paul's obedience and then Lydia's faithfulness to to say this is like we have one person or one person in Paul being obedient, then we have another person in Lydia who she becomes a believer, she gets baptized, other people become baptized, then she does this simple act of hospitality, and because of that, the early church in Philippi is established, the early church in Europe is established, and that ripples all the way down. That ripples all the way now, yeah. That's what I mean. It's like that is insane. This book, Philippians, which is one of the most joy-filled, encouraging chap uh books in the New Testament that we get to read and pull things from today, is started here in a simple conversation by a riverbank with this woman who's this spiritual leader in her community, which is crazy. I I don't I I will never grasp when people say, like, oh, I just the Bible's like, I don't get anything out of it, or like it's boring, or it's such an old book. Like, when you when you think, when you read it with that mindset of like, God, what is it that you want to show me today? I'm just gonna read this little bit and I'm gonna kind of just dig through it a little bit. I'm gonna look up what that word means. I'm gonna I'm gonna pull a map out and look at where Macedonia, you know, like when you start to actually like want to learn stuff from it, the Bible will just illuminate these things to you where you'll sit there and go, Oh my gosh, like I can't believe But and I think we can all all think back to different times where there was a ri like this aspect of hospitality towards us in our faith, right? Of like whether that was us as me as a kid and with you and your family, or um like somebody giving us a ride home, like we talked about it last time. It's like these little things of like hospitality that we can go back to, and it was like, yeah, that was the hands and feet of Christ. Like that it seemed simple or insignificant, but there's a reason we're all here in this room today. There's a reason that there are kids or teenagers or now young adults with families who they still attend our church, and it was somebody opened their home to them, somebody welcomed them in, somebody brought them over for a coffee or for dinner when they were going through something. And so, again, even and it's not like Pastor Mark talked about it on a Wednesday night a couple weeks ago. We're not always bringing people, like it's our pastors' jobs to shepherd us and to teach us spiritually and to and to help us grow. But there are things that we can do just as people, yeah, like there are things that you can do that are just simple like that. Is hey, come on over for lunch. My parents are amazing at this. It's like they are amazing people with this. It's it's just their house is always open. You want to throw an event, they're you're throwing it at their house. Like they're doing all this different stuff. And what is that? It's it's hospitality. They're not doing it like you're saying, they're not doing it to preach at people. No, they're doing it to just love people, they're just encouraging people to just love people, to just let them know this is a place where they can go and and have have fun and and and be around other Christians and believers, and whatever reason or whatever capacity it is. But what is it? It's a ministry of hospitality, which is shown here, is effective and works. Like so try it. Definitely works. I mean, think about all the you know, obviously we talk about that story, but think about all the different times through scripture, Old Testament and New Testament, where a simple meal, a conversation, sitting down with someone, yeah, all of a sudden becomes transformative. All the conversations that Jesus or the woman at the well or whatever. It's like it's a sit-down conversation. Yeah, it's not uh, hey, I'm just gonna I'm gonna preach at you, and I'm it's just let's fellowship, let's uh have some time together, let's build one another up. And uh, yeah, that's cool, man. Yeah, the other thing is like that last verse. It's like she urged until they accepted it. Like she was persistent in that. It's like, no, you're I'm gonna stay with like out of my. It's like, no, no, no, you're going to take this. Like, no, all right, fine, whatever. If this is no, great, then I'm bringing it over, and you can I'm gonna leave it right here, this meal for you and your family. Which some people get weird to accept accept those things, yeah. But sometimes you ought to remember, like, and I don't want to by you, I I know everyone wants to be humble, like, no, no, no, no, no. I like I can't, I can't, I can't, but yeah, but you take the blessing away from some like somebody like you're saying, somebody that's persist. Like if someone's like, Oh yeah, you want to come over sometime, and it's like, oh no, it's okay, and they're like, Alright, fine, maybe next time. Then it's like, all right, maybe they didn't really want you to do that. Yeah, exactly. But like those people who are persistent, who are like in your life all the time and like continually want trying to find ways to just bless you and and be kind to you, you know. I think sometimes we out of our own humility, we we try to reject those like that's what we're supposed to do. But sometimes in doing that, we we remove the blessing that they that they want to give, you know. And so I I think that when people are persistent like that, you ought to if someone wants to bless you, you ought to let them bless you. You know, it it'll benefit both of you in the long run. Because there's nothing better than than doing something for someone else. Um and there's also a great feeling of someone doing something for you, and so when you get that mutual um, you know, obviously Lydia has this life-changing experience because of what Paul has taught her, yeah, and so she now reciprocates through this act of host of hospitality, and so they're both blessing each other through that, and I think sometimes as Christians we need to remember that. Yeah, in again, in these five verses, I think there's so many lessons that you can learn from Lydia. Like, because I thought of another one of just her new youth series coming next month. Lydia the purple cloth dude. It's Lydia, it's Lydia. I don't know what that's like. It's Lydia. Oh I was like, I don't understand the rest. I didn't get that either. But like there's people who they want their again, they want to be the spiritual leaders in their household or for their families or for their friends, whatever it is, but they aren't willing to do those things first. Like it's not like she didn't say that to like her family members, like everybody get down to the river, you all gotta get baptized. It's like, no, she gets baptized and then she does it. She steps up first to change. She's the example because she's the leader for her family. How you lead and how you lead a family. You can learn a lot from this woman who's got four verses dedicated to her life, which is crazy. Yeah, that's awesome. So what a great story. Great story. Very good. I mean, there's a bunch, but it's just it's cool. The other thing is, sorry, I like this kind of stuff. So I said this before. So we decided in verse 10, it says the other thing I was like, oh, that's gotta be like it says in here in Greek disciples. But Luke is with them. Like, because Luke is right in the book of Acts. Right. Right? So like I'd have to look that up, but I'm pretty sure that's why. Like, so we went, Matt, can you look that up? Like, is is it's Paul and Silas and Timothy are traveling, and in Acts chapter 16, is Luke present with them? Because like obviously he has to write this book, right? And he uses the verbiage of we. Yeah, which is wild, which I don't even you don't even think about, right? Isn't that sick? Like it's literally that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03In biblical studies chapter 16 marks the start of the famous the we passages. Yo, let's go.
SPEAKER_05Where Luke is there, where Luke is also present. So on this missionary journey that we see, his first missionary journey with with Silas and Timothy, it says we, and then it's like, oh, that's sick. Luke doesn't get enough credit. Nah, dude, Luke is bald. Because Axe is sick, and Luke is my favorite gospel, not just because my name's Luke, but I because I like the way it's told from like a third person like descriptive as well. Yeah. Because he's a doctor. Yeah, and he's smart. I think that's my favorite gospel to him. Yeah.

It is so cool, and you ought to read it with a sense of man, let me go read more. He's gonna go read the read the whole chapter.
