Hello and welcome back to another episode of the New Life Podcast.
SPEAKER_00Nice. Episode number 43, baby. You should do it in like a commercial voice. You know what I'm talking about? Ah yeah. Like a radio show.
SPEAKER_01Hey everybody, welcome back. Like that. Are you like a pastor? I sound like Pastor Andy. Yeah, true. Welcome to church. I don't know. I'd have to like really think about it. I haven't watched it. I did it when we were at like compounds.
SPEAKER_02Remember, I did like that ad read. But that was it. I didn't remember how you did it. No. No.
SPEAKER_01I just don't want to do it and mess up and then you guys make fun of me in front of a live audience. True. Millions. And by live, I mean Mateo. Me. Yeah, only you. Alright, move on. Moving on to something else. Moving on, moving on. People don't want to hear it anyway. They do. They do. Well, welcome to New Life Podcast, to New Life Podcast. Alright, I'm gonna stop talking. To the New Life Podcast. Do you have a fun fact to start us out with today?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01Why do you guys not have anything to share? Do you?
SPEAKER_02I'm always the one who has to share. It's like I got hair opening thoughts. Yes, I have plenty of thoughts. Edge up on the side. Yes, I have plenty of thoughts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, circular uh dude. I had to get a nice haircut. And then put a hat on. Yes. Come on, man. The Spencer special. I hate doing it. Do you shave it like you want to? No. Come on. It's a little shorter. Do it. Looks good. I can't see it. That's like super far away. If it was salt and pepper, it would look exactly like Nate Bargain's. Dude, I think about it every day. I can't wait till my hair is gray. You're not even close. You don't have any. I got some in my beard, which I really like, but then I have, yeah, I got a couple, but I want it to go to go gray.
SPEAKER_00Dude, we didn't talk about late compounds last week.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00It was a fun time. What a bad one. That was a fun time. I had a great time. I want a basketball on one of those rigged games. I lost $30. I got an Alabama one.
SPEAKER_01You lost $30? No, why would you say that? We were going to hold on to it until Christmas. His birthday is next week. Yo, Drew. I ordered his Christmas or his birthday present. Is this going to air before his birthday present?
unknownBefore his birthday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. No, no, no. Oh, before, yeah, before, before, before. No, it won't, because this is too.
SPEAKER_00His birthday's on the 20th. This will air the 24th. Yeah. So after. So yeah, so his gift.
SPEAKER_01So regardless if it's in. But I ordered it and went through the whole thing, and then I got the email, the confirmation email, and I sent it to our old house in Seymour. And I was like, dang it. At least I know them. Yeah. But I was like, man, I've never done that before. Like I actually shipped something. I got a mail sent here the other day, and it said Luke Evans, 185, like Oak Ridge Road, and it still came here. And it really came out of the case. What is 185 Oak Ridge Road? I have no idea. It was I don't even know what it was like junk or whatever, but I don't understand how it would even arrive. Was it from a different Luke Evans at Oak Ridge Road who sent it to you? He's like, hey man, let's connect. It was weird. It's like the mailman either just saw Luke Evans and threw it in the pile, or like how would it even show up here? Or it accidentally showed up here to be even freakier because it has my name on it.
SPEAKER_00Isn't that never mind? I'm not gonna say it out loud. I know whose house that is. Well oh, I don't know. I mean, I don't want to just throw someone's address out there. We can redact it in the audio. Okay, it's his house. Oh.
SPEAKER_01So maybe he brought it in with him. Yeah, he does. He said Luke Evans and he brought it with him. Oh, but why would it be his I don't know? I don't know. I don't know. So yesterday I was having a conversation with John. Shout out John Rodriguez. Shout out. Um, and so he was he was asking, we were asking the questions. He's a super nice guy, he's great. We've mentioned it before. Um, and he listens to the pod pretty faithfully. So we were like, he had mentioned, he was like, You ever think of like a recipe? Like who was the first person to like put that recipe together? Like every food that we have, yeah, like today, it's like somebody had started with the recipe, and it's like they added the ingredients and stuff. And so we were talking about like who made the first apple pie. And it's like that recipe that we have for apple pie hasn't changed since well, I guess, but like people have evolved and like made their own like put their own stuff, like somebody put nutmeg in it. But the basic ingredients put the basic ingredients and like they're like, throw all that in and put it over a fire and bake it, like and it tastes delicious. Who even thought if we put some stuff over a fire, it'll bake? Well, that's what we got into the thing. Was like, who was the first person to drink milk from an animal? And they were like, you know what? Like, they're milking the animal, and then they're like, I want to try this. Who was the first person to even said this years ago? Who was the first person to even know to milk an animal? Like you're staring at the couple of crazy. You're staring at that cow going, I'm gonna squeeze that. Something's gonna go.
SPEAKER_02That that sentence in general is weird.
SPEAKER_01What a pervert that guy was. I'm gonna squeeze that is insane. I mean, how else do you know? I guess. All right, moving on. And then he sees the goat and he's like, I wonder if something if they do that too. How many animals do you think they they tried?
SPEAKER_00Well, I think it's because I don't know, but like we're really talking about it. Calves went to the cow, and so the whoever's like you first like you know, they went to the calves.
SPEAKER_01But dogs and cats do that too. Same thing. You so you think they try it on a dog and a cat? That's what I mean. Like every animal on the face pretty much does that. Just to eliminate it, you're like, you know, we need to know. Yeah. Like get that chicken over there. Some guy in Africa is like that mommy lion. Or that cane about that. You're like, should we do it from the top? Two humps? Should we push on the hump? What is in that second hump, dude? That is crazy. Then I was like, yeah, me and I don't know who it was. I don't know if it was one of you guys or if it was me and Nicole. It was like like glass. Glass has been around since like the Egyptians, like ancient Egyptians, and it was like, like, put the glass on that fire. Or put the sand on that fire, and it just made glass. Remember when we went to that glass factory in Venezuela? You were probably really little, but remember that? And they were like, They blow the glass and they make the vases. It's but it's like how like you look at an oyster, like somebody found an oyster and like picked it out of the thing, it was like crack it open, and then they saw it, and they were like, I'm gonna eat it. That looks yummy. Yeah, it's wild, dude. And then the other one that I I wrote down was like we just decided eggs were breakfast. You were like, mmm, that's an egg. No, that's breakfast almost exclusively. Like you mix eggs into other stuff, but you're not like, hmm, I'll have uh egg. Yeah, which is great. Just slaps so it hits so different.
SPEAKER_00I wonder who thought to put eggs in like baked stuff. You know what I mean? Like as like a binder, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or to who thought who thought to cook them. Like, I wonder if people were just cracking them and slurping them down. Just straight. Well, that's a me and John were talking about what the apple pie was like they ate like a chicken or a duck or something or some type of bird, and they got sick, and they were like, We need to put that over that fire, and then we can eat it. Yeah, you know what I mean? They don't have the knowledge to know that they're what they're actually doing. Or like even like hunting and stuff, like you have to harvest it immediately. Like how long we need to do a deep dive on this because now I'm in charge of it's wild. Like, how many people how many people do we think died of food poisoning? Like from everything back then. Yeah, true. Like strep or like common culture. They're also but back then there like the again, we've said this before, it would have been the worst.
SPEAKER_02We live in the per best possible time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude. Just spearing a a duck with a with a piece of that museum, and it was like there's often biting it. Everybody's just living in the log cabins, and it's like, it was 13 degrees in this cabin all winter long. And it's like, that would have been the worst. It's like the winter would have been so long, no food, no bathrooms, nope, no showers.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I probably stunk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, when would you bathe it's a horrible time to live? And it was like the crazy part is thing of water. Like that wasn't that long ago, which is a good thing. We should go to Sturbridge Village. Please no, dude. I went there a field trip when I was in the That would be so fun, and we'll do a video and then. When do they do they still do that at CHS? It's like sixth grade. I don't know. I'm willing to go. Seventh.
SPEAKER_00You're going oh no, you're not. District office.
SPEAKER_01That's where district office is, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. You guys could go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we should go next meeting. Next time a youth meeting. Go up there. I'm with it. Some Chick-fil-A. That and I've been wanting to go to the Native American Museum in Connecticut. Where's that? It's over by Mohegan, I think. Oh that makes sense. No way. Guys, you asked the question and I just answered it. Literally on the reservoir. You guys asked the question. Yeah, but it's the biggest one in the United States, I guess. Really? Yeah. So I've been wanting to go see some arrowheads and stuff. Learn a little bit. I'll come, I'll go and then I'll report back on the podcast of what I've done. Oh, that would be great. That'd be nice. Travel pod. Alright. Sounds like a work trip to me. I'll see you guys. Alright, what are we talking about today? Let's just get into it. Since you guys have nothing valuable to share. We both did weddings this week. We did. My first ever wedding. Devin did his first wedding this week. It was great. Went well. It went well. It did go great. It's not too bad, right? No, though. It was, I mean, it's like 12 minutes, 15 minutes of your time. That's like somebody was asking me, they were like, aren't you nervous? I was like, no. One, I public speak. That's my job. Like, so it's like that. And then I was like, also, you have to put it in the context of like what we do. Like, one, we know how to do it, we're called to do it, we're excited to do it. Um, like, like you, everybody, the listener, with your job, like you know, once you get into a groove of like what you're doing, like you become confident in it and you do it. And so, like, it's no different for that. But like, also in the grand scheme of things, like, I'm officiating a wedding. Like, I'm not like trying to figure out how to put like food on the plate for my kids.
SPEAKER_02No, it's like in the grand scheme of like pressure, like it's the thing like Josh Hart from the Knicks had said it was like, How do you do it?
SPEAKER_01You run for 40 minutes a game, and he's like, Yeah, like, but I'm not not like a single parent trying to figure out how to feed my kids. It's a heart surgery. In the grand exactly, it's like in the grand scheme of things, like if something goes wrong, like it will be fine, like it will be okay, like something drastic. The only nerve-wracking or or hard part about weddings is if their names are hard to pronounce, yeah, or you know, you don't want to mess like that part up, but other than that, yeah. So, and then the other thing I forgot at the beginning was like to have everybody sit down. So, like I started reading the thing, and I was like, Yeah, I've done that, and everybody's still standing, and my dad was just like in the back, and he was just like, and I was like, Oh, and you may be seated. Yeah, and I was like, sorry, this is my first letter. And so like that got a trouble. Like, which that's what like I've totally done that before. And that that was the other part, um, which like you would do, or like you guys know, like like when we preach, like we try to add in like different moments and humor to just kind of like lighten the mood and different stuff, and so I did, and so the parents of the bride like they came up and they were like, Wow, we really appreciated that. Like, it wasn't like stale, like it was just like a nice ceremony, but also like stuff like that made it made it a little bit easier. Well, people like that, especially if they're from church or grew up in church, they want that kind of feel to it because they're I mean you could go justice of the peace, or you could hire somebody, or I mean anyway Mateo could go online right now. The lady who worked there for 10 minutes he could affiliate a wedding.
SPEAKER_02The lady who worked there kept calling me justice of the peace. That's hilarious. She was just like Justice of the Peace, are you here? And I'm like, uh yeah, I'm Pastor Dev. That's fine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've been called father before. Father, thank you. Thank you so much, Father. Like, oh yeah, it was great. It was nice. There was one mishap though. I wasn't didn't know if I was gonna share it on the pod or not. I'll just say the best man at this wedding that I did officiate, uh, he forgot the rings. And so it was like So not only one job. So again, it wasn't like my mishap of okay, not letting them sit down or not saying that, like immediately was forgotten because yeah. And the best part was he walked down. I told these guys that he walked down, and I asked him, I'm like, Hey, you have the rings, right? And he was like, Stop messing around, like, stop making me nervous, like stop playing it. And I was like, No, you you have like you're supposed to have them. And he was like, Oh no, like somebody else is bringing them up, and I was like, Okay, like that's your job, like, but okay, like sounds good. And so, sure enough, like we get to the ceremony and I ask, I'm like, May I have the rings? And he's like, he just gets like white as a ghost, and he's like, I don't have them, dude. I really don't. The craziest part to me is if someone said to me, and no offense to no offense to this person, because he's a nice guy, we know. But if someone said to me, Hey, do you have the rings? And I looked at them and I was like, Stop playing, I would then tell him to find out. Like, yeah, I would say and I agree, but the problem was it was legit as they were what because he was one of the last people to come down. He is the best man. So it's like Oh, it's like right before he walked before. When he got up there, wouldn't you, when you get up there, like look to the guy that you thought hat would have him and be like, hey, do you have the rings? He wasn't down yet, because he they so he could have turned around and asked. Stop making excuses for him, okay? No, he failed. But so so like during the ceremony, like I just like pivoted and I was like, Alright, here's mine. Like, so I took mine off and gave it to the bride, and then the maid of honor gave one to the groom so that they could exchange rings, and then by the end of the ceremony, somebody had run up and got them. So it was hilarious. Like it was, and so I said, I was like, dude, I'm like, forget about it, like like it is what it is. Like he's I think he was beating himself up, and then some of the other guys were giving him a hard time, which was funny, but it was it was hilarious. But and then Well, we won't give him a hard time or talk about it on the pod or anything. Yeah, true. I don't know if they watched this pod anyway, but it was I was like, dude, you can make it up, make up for it with like a great best man speech and like having a great time at the recent. And he he was great, it was fun. So good speech? Yeah, he did good.
SPEAKER_00I don't think I've heard a better speech than Drew's at ears. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Drew every week we talk about Drew. Well, he's a cool. We should bring Drew on. He'd never be able to come on because of work, but we'll figure it out. Bring Drew on. Bring him on. He already took the day off for uh Dune's Day, so we could bring him on after. Yeah, Drew. Drew loves. Drew loves. Oh shoot, I might have just ratted him out. His his boss. His work is gonna be like he just took a sick day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what if they show this podcast at their work and we're gonna do it?
SPEAKER_01Just like a staff meeting. My wedding I did earlier this week. The bride was two hours late. That is insane to me. Just the bride? Yeah. Hey, it's her day. Just the bride. What the bride wants. Like one of the guys that was like with the bride because his wife is related to her or whatever. He like came probably like 30 minutes after the wedding was supposed to start with like the sound stuff, and he was like, Yeah, I couldn't wait any longer. And he was like, She was just getting her hair done when I left. I was like, Oh my gosh. But super nice. I got there at like 1.30, and she didn't show up till 3 30. But wow. Nice couple, so you couldn't couldn't get mad at him. Great, great, great young couple. God's God's doing great things. Because your couple you married was young too. Yeah, young, youngish. Yeah, 20s. Like my age. 20s is young. They're not your they're not in their 30s. Yes, they are. Get out of here. She is. Yeah, they're the same, they're the same. Same age as me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Not him. He's 20. They are. Bro, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_01I I would have thought they were like mid-20s. No, no. They're my age. Wow, everyone just looks young now. The older you get, everyone looks young. Yeah, it was great too. Mine started a little bit late, but that was just because there's really bad traffic. Well, get to get married, then they'll start having kids. And then once they start having kids, they will email into the New Life Podcast. Oh, we got another email. And they will say the NLPod at gmail.com. We appreciate you emailing the nlpod at gmail.com with your ideas and your thoughts. Um, I'm just gonna read a little bit of one email that we got, and then we're gonna just talk about it for a few minutes. But it says, This is from our friend Morgan, it's not my cousin. Uh, it says, I absolutely love the new life podcast. That's an interesting last name. And look forward to it every Monday. Come on. I mean she's listening day of release. That's a true fan. That's a true fan. Would you guys ever do an episode on all things parenting? All things, like patience, how you handle Christmas and Santa or specific prayers for your kids. That would be amazing as a mom of two trying to figure out this whole parenting thing. Well, I am a dad of two trying to figure out this parenting thing. I am also a dad of two trying to figure out this whole parenting thing. And I think that's the most important thing to realize about parenting is that you will never have it figured out. There's difficult seasons in every season or difficult things or things you're trying to figure out in every season because you're obviously ahead of me like quite a few years. I have a I have a almost by the time this comes out, it'd be like a week to a week and a half from having a 14-year-old. That's crazy. He can drive an 11-year-old. Yeah. Well, in Missouri, in Missouri, he probably could. Yeah. That's crazy. So yeah. And then I have a four-year-old and a one-year-old. Oh, I got nothing. Both our kids are. I didn't even realize that, dude. That's crazy. They're three years apart. Our lives really mirror each other. Well, no, both our kids are 10. You have a four-year-old, I have a 14-year-old, you have a one-year-old, I have an 11-year-old. And then I'm 10 years old. And then you're 10 dude. Are you kidding me right now? That's crazy. Okay. Well, yeah, one day when they're running the church, I mean we'll be the old guys. Oh, I can't wait, dude. I can't wait to be the old guys. Goofing off, just having fun. I mean, they're the old guys who work here do a lot. Saying nothing with no consequence. They don't listen to this pod. Yeah, no, we don't have to worry about it. But your dad does. Your dad does. And my dad does. When my mom listens to it in the other room really loud, then he can hear it. So it's all good. Parenting. Okay. So what do you like? Do you have something specific you want to start with or anything? Or no? Um, I mean, I just have, you know, based on what the email is asking, you know, uh patience is probably one of the biggest character traits when it comes to parenting. I think if you don't have patience, you're gonna have a really rough time of parenting. Um and I I don't and I think there's a balance to it. I think it's important to understand that you have to have patience with your children in a sense that they're growing human beings, and so they have to take their lumps and their bumps and learn from things, and sometimes they're gonna be really stupid, especially when they hit that like 12, 13, 14-year-old age, they're gonna do some stupid things. But I think having a good balance of patience and understanding, but also discipline and you know, there's a balance to everything. Um and so I think that's really important. I got some verses and stuff, but if you have something No, I like again I didn't have this email or access to it prior. They just said we're doing parenting. So that's not true. I was kind of I also don't know how old her children are, but I'm assuming younger. So yeah. So I mean one of the things that like m me and Nicole have tried to do is like be really intentional, like with our time with our kids, like which is easier for us in our schedule, and I know it's hard for some parents like because of work and because of different things, but like utilizing the time that you have, because I saw a thing a little while ago, and so me and Nicole like sat down and we talked about it and like made the decision that it's like our kids specifically, so like if we have two kids, then yes, both of them at the same time, but one on one, especially with our older son who's four, is like we saw this thing that it was like if you spend just like twenty minutes a day, like of intentionally like playing a game with them or sitting down at the dinner table and asking them questions, like we do like trivia with Cy, like he thinks it's so fun. But it's like having genuine like conversations or reading stories or praying with them, like just 20 minutes of time, like it's like astronomical, like the benefits for them, like in their younger development years. I mean, and I'm sure even older. Um, like I'm there, I know that there's things that you do with Brody and things that you'll go do and spend time with Harper. And it's like so we have been trying to do that, and it's like so like parents, like you get home from work, and it's like the first thing you Want to do sometimes is like, man, I just need to like decompress or relax. And it's like, save that for when the kids go to bed. Like, if you can, like, just 20 minutes, spend some time with them, like, and just have a conversation with them and play with them. And it's like, it's been, I said to Nicole, like, at first, like, this is gonna sound bad because I'm like, I think I'm a good parent, like, and I love my kids and I love playing with my son. But it's like at some on some days, you're like, you're tired, and you're like, you know what? Like, I just want to just watch TV, or like I need to eat something, or I need to do something else, or we could all go out and we'll all do something. And and Nicole, why don't like we both do this together? And it's like some some days I walked in and I'm like, man, dude, I don't know if I can do this 20 minutes right now. Like, like I had a rough day, or like whatever it is, and it's like you do that, and that you wouldn't believe how like fulfilling it is, or like the 20 minutes of like designated playtime turns into like an hour, and it's like you didn't even realize what happened, and and so I'm just being real and authentic with with everybody here. But it's like that was one of the things that like when we talked about parents, I was like, I gotta share that, and hopefully it encouraged encourages somebody. It's like, can you take 20 minutes out of your time? Yeah, like and then it'll turn into and morph into more. But it's like being intentional with your time is super important. Well, I think if you have an understanding, right? Like, so there's obviously people that listen to this that have grown kids, there's people that listen that have kids my age are a little older, and then I'm assuming the emailer, because she's mentioned Santa, I'm assuming she has younger kids, unless like a 15-year-old that she's really wondering how to break it to him. Um, you know, I I think when you have younger kids, like you're saying, about being intentional. I think I think that if you try to remind you, I think one of the things that I've been trying to do lately because obviously my kids are older, and so you know, I don't I don't come home from work and Brody's like, hey, you want to go play with the dinosaurs in the basement? Like, you know, my you know, my son's 14. I asks Uncle Luke to go. Yes, exactly. Devin Devin's kids asked me to come over and play with the dinosaurs now, so I still get my fix. But you know, my my kids now ask me uh look again, all the seasons are different and everything changes, and so the things that your kids will ask you to do at different ages will will all be different. You know, my son will ask me to go outside and play basketball with him, which is awesome. Way better than going to play with dinosaurs. And and my daughter will ask, you know, me or my daughter will ask me or my wife to do something um different than when she was a little kid. Um and I think the most important thing that I've learned over at least the last like two or three years is trying my best to remind myself that this is not gonna last forever, and one day I'm gonna I'm gonna wish that they were either still in the house to ask me to do something with them or or you know, they're out and about as a teenager and you know, and it's like pulling teeth trying to with their schedules and stuff, trying to get them to do something. And so like I I well if you haven't under and I don't think that has to be discouraging. I think if you raise your kids properly, I mean, even as I was in high school and college and and grown, I still talk to my parents all the time, want to hang out with them, you know, go over their house. Like I I think if you raise your kids right, there that doesn't have to be a scary or depressing thing. But I also think that you have to have a realization of like, man, one day, one day I'm not gonna be sitting on the floor playing dinosaurs. So I better enjoy playing dinosaurs right now because one day I'm gonna really miss well that and I think our dads just speaking about them like and speaking for you. But it's one thing that I noticed about your dad, and I've noticed about my dad, is like we're grown men, like you're 41, almost almost 41, I'm 31. Like they still are trying to fit into our interests, even as adults. Like, like my dad hates golfing. Like, I love golfing, I love going golfing, and like if I call him and text him, like he's just like he doesn't have the patience for it. He'd he would tell you, like, we've been out and he'd be like, I'd rather do it. Which is crazy because he sits in a stream for four hours trying to get out of here. But he's good at fishing, he enjoys it, it's something he's passionate about. But like if I called him today and was like, Hey dad, I need somebody to to go golfing with me, like he would go golfing, like you know what I mean. It's like your dad, like you guys got into cards again, and like sure enough, like your dad's like, Yeah, let's go, let's go to the card shows, let's do that kind of stuff. And it's like they're still, even as grandparents now, but still our parents, like, so we're talking about little kids, like they're still super intentional with that, like with their own kids and how they like lead us because it's still again, that's still their job. Like, even though I get it, we've left our families, like we have our own families and started that, but they're still super intentional with it, yeah. And I think again, when you're intentional, when you're intentional in the little things, then you'll be intentional with the big things as well. And so when it comes to you know, like this email I asked, like, you know, what specific prayers can you pray over your kids and stuff like that. I obviously there's no specific like this is how you should pray for your kid. Um, you know, I think you should ask God to to bless their lives, to lead them, to guide them. Um But I think that when you're in when you're intentional with, yeah, yeah, I want to play with dinosaurs with them, but let me be intentional, m like prioritize what I'm intentional with, and let me make sure, you know, my two kids have never asked a day in their life. Are we going to church on Sunday? Or are we going to church tonight on a Wednesday? Like your your kids, Sia's never asked that or wondered that when Georgie gets older, when they're both older, like they're not it's that won't be a question, and so again, you're intentional with those things, and I think that you should pray over your kids. And my parents prayed over me, and your parents prayed over you, and I pray over my kids, you pray over your kids. I you should pray over your kids, but I think when you're intentional about listen, this is what we do, this is what we believe, this is how we act, this is how we talk, this is how we treat people. When you're intentional in the example that you bring them up in, all of a sudden the stresses of like worrying about man, where are they gonna end up, where are they gonna I I think that you have to be intentional from from top to bottom of the priorities that you have for them, whether it's spiritual, relational, physical, right? What they're eating, what they're you know, uh exercise, all those things, right? Not letting them get out of control with the junk, food and stuff like that. Like everything, everything is needs to be prioritized, and everything needs to be intentional because God's blessed you with this human that you're in charge of and this life that you've been given. Um, you know, in Proverbs, obviously, we all read it all the time, but it says train up a child in the way that they should go. But Ephesians, New Testament, says parents should raise their children with loving, discipline, and instruction in the Lord, right? So again, I I have I have patience and I have understanding. I'm loving my children, but I also know how to raise them with discipline and raise them in the Lord so that hey, you know what, you want to play with dinosaurs? I'm ready. Like, let's go. I'm re I'm you want to play dinosaurs, I'm ready. But I'm also here that if you sash your mom or you throw a tantrum in public, guess what? You're you're getting a little smack on the leg and you're getting it putting time out, or you know, and on Sundays we're going to church, you're going to kid zone. When you get older, you're going to youth. When you get older, you're sitting with me. Like I've I've had that now that I'm kind of had that progression of like, you know, Brody went through kid zone. Now on Wednesday nights he goes to youth. On Sundays he sits with with Summer. So like I've had that progression of like you know, doing that with a kid, and just when you prioritize those things and you understand, man, I just want to be the best parent that I can be, but I want to make sure that I'm not being the best parent I can be based on the world standards, but I'm being the best parent that I can be biblically. This isn't a Bible, my verses are on here, but biblically, um, yes, biblically, I'm being the best parent that I possibly can be and raising them the way that God has called me to raise them, not the way that some therapist tells me or some TikTok lady or you know, this book that I read or whatever. Like I I'm raising them biblically and I'm prioritizing. Again, you mentioned it, so church can play a huge role in like in so many ways. Like you said it, but it made me think of that. Like church in a relationship with Jesus. But like I was just thinking of like there I know this, and I'm not again speaking for anybody, but I know for a fact that there are young people in our church that grew up in your ministry or grew up in my ministry that they didn't have a Christian background or family, or did not have a good example of parenting in their household. And like because they continue to grow in their faith, one God will guide them and direct them and help them when it comes to their own parenting and they can be established. But also, like I've seen it like like with my dad, like, or the way like some of the guys on my soccer team when I was growing up, or different families and different things, like there are people who kind of slide into those roles, like and fill those like if you needed something, if you if like being dependable and being these different things, and I'm like, because of a church community, like you have those dependable people that can help parent, not parent, but you know what I mean. I don't know if that makes any sense. And yeah, exactly. And it's like you see Christian families and how they lead their kids, and you're like, oh, you know what? That's something that I should be doing. Like you're getting all of these great examples outside of what you know, and and again, there's people and you're coming to church for the first time and you're bringing your kids and you've never parented them as a Christian, as a believer, and it's like this is the perfect time to start. Like, oh well, we didn't get to it when they were eight and nine, so I guess we'll just keep doing what we're doing. It's like, no, no, no, like this is still your opportunity to lead them, it's still a calling, it's still a commandment from God's word, like to parent and to disciple your kids, like so that they can have their own relationship with Jesus one day. It doesn't matter when that timeline starts. And so I just thought that that was a good thing. Well, and I think the pitch, you know, I say it all the time when I preach, but you know, the greatest the greatest example that we have humanly on earth of God's love for us is when we have a child, right? Like there is no greater example of this person has done absolutely nothing for me. They completely rely on me, they will one day fail me, they will one day disappoint me, but I could not love anything more than this. I would die for this, I'd kill somebody for this. Like, there is no greater example of of God's love for us than than when the doctor puts the baby in our hands and we go, I've never met you before, but I would literally kill everyone in this hospital to protect you, right? Like, and and so I think again, when you when you look at your kids in that perspective of a biblical worldview of how do I biblically love this child, and you begin to think about how much God loves us and how much you love them, all of a sudden you think about the patience that God has with us. And it's really hard to have patience with your kids sometimes. Like you said, sometimes you don't want to do what you gotta do, and sometimes you snap at them, and sometimes you react poorly, and like all that stuff will happen. Um, but I think that when you understand how much God loves you and this gift that He's blessed you with, when you begin to try your best to love that child like God loves you, man, you'll patience will pour out of you because you'll be thinking about all that all that God has put up with you doing. Yeah, true. Uh and and it you'll quickly overlook some of the frustrations and some of the moments when you either have a short fuse or or you lack patience. And I mean, like, I I'm not I'm not gonna read them all, but like I got a whole list here of, you know, uh I said we should raise our children to be you know godly kids, but raise them biblically. Like literally, like Deuteronomy 6, teach God's word diligently to your children through everyday life. Psalm 127, children are a heritage and a reward from the Lord. Proverbs 29, discipline brings wisdom, rest, and delight to a parent. Like Isaiah 54, all your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children. Like it goes on, it literally goes on and on and on and on about you know, Psalm 103, the Lord's compassion is compared to a father's compassion for his children. Proverbs 20, children are blessed by a parent who walks with integrity. Like immediately read all of it. It's no, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't. That's the crazy part. There's like six more on here. That's great. Like it, it, it's it's literally there's one after another after another verses that you could read on a daily basis to just help you have more patience and help you enjoy your children and help you, but also help you be a parent that understands man, there's discipline involved, there's love involved, there's grace involved, there's mercy involved, um, there's judgment involved, like there's all of those things. Like everything, every everything that God does for us and shows us that sometimes we don't like or sometimes we love, or sometimes like that's all that he's asking us to pour out on our kids, you know? That's good. I again I don't I have like one more, but I didn't know if we have the time for it or want to talk about it. Okay. So again, I didn't have the email, so this is just something else that I thought of. Thanks a lot, guys. Oh, you had you gonna talk about Santa? No. Um like I thought about like almost like wins and losses, like in when it comes to parenting, like, and I think a lot of the time like we don't like put into account like there in parenting, like there is a lot of losses, like there's failure, like there's things that we do correctly, there's in everything, but also in parenting. And so like how we handle failure as parents, I think is like super obviously super important. Um, and like the way that we allow our kids like into that, and I think that that is like going to your kids and apologizing. Because I think a lot of time we're like, we're the parents, we're the ones who are right, we're the ones who like we need to be strong, we need to be, and I think a part of that strength and like true, genuine like freedom in the way we parent is like repentance and saying we're sorry. Like not only that, but like hearing like not just oh, I'm changing my actions, but it's like hearing our kids say I'm sorry, or like if there's a disagreement between uh like me and my wife or you and your spouse, like your kids seeing you guys mend that and making it making it better and saying, you know what, this is daddy said something to mommy and and it was not right, and I apologize. Like those things are are super important. But what I wrote down was like I want my kids to like be able to say, like, my dad knows what to do when he messes up, but he also knows like who he needs to go to when something goes wrong and when he fails. Like there's a God that he serves that he needs to repent and he needs to move forward, but he also knows okay, when he messes up, this is what he does. He always says he's sorry, he always um tries to fix it. And that and again, there's some people I think when they parent or in life, like they th just kind of give up on it or or they think, oh, I've never done that right, so now I need to like I said, like I'm like there was times when I got home and I'm like, I'm too tired to play with my kids, like and I do not have a hard job. Like I ha should have the energy for that. But it's like, you know what I mean? It's like a physically taxing job, I mean, but it's like there is like those things where it's like, yeah, that that was a failure. That was something that I was not doing right, or doing in the best of my ability. So it's like it's time to correct that, it's time for me to say sorry, it's time for me to repent of that and say, God, I need your help with this, and moving forward and doing it. It's like, and that's in grand things and great mistakes that we make parenting, but it's also in the small little things of like how we reacted. Like, oh, I shouldn't have said that, I shouldn't have yelled at him for that, like I shouldn't have said this to her. It's like I shouldn't have taken that away. It was my fault because I was angrier. I'm taking my frustration out on them, even though it's something else that's bothering me. And it's like taking accountability, understanding our failures, and then asking for forgiveness. Again, it's the when you prioritize what you're supposed to prioritize and you're intentional with what God tells you to be intentional about, all of a sudden those things will flow out of you. So if you're a parent and you're trying to figure out how to how to parent, if like Devin is saying, like, oh, I made a mistake, okay. Well, I'm trying to prioritize being as Christ-like as I can, and I'm trying to be intentional about what I want my kids to see. Okay, well, if I'm doing those two things, then when I mess up, because we will mess up, when I mess up, I now know, hey, let me go be the example that my kids need me to be. And I think a lot of times we prioritize the wrong thing. Well, I'm talking about men, right? We prioritize sometimes the wrong things. Like as dads, we want to be like this macho, like, I'm gonna protect this house, but we're not man enough to apologize. Yeah, so we've prioritized the wrong things. Like, I think you should protect your house. I protect my home, you're ready to protect your home. Like that that's awesome. But if I prioritize that over more that more than being able to apologize to my wife or being able to hug my son and tell him that I love him, yeah, then I've I've got my priorities mixed up. And so it's all about the things that you prioritize. And when you're trying to be a godly parent, not just a parent, but a godly parent, all of a sudden you prioritize the right things. You prioritize what we're so thankful to God for. You prioritize mercy and grace and patience and love, and you prioritize these things. And yes, protection and discipline and judgment. Oh, I get it, but you prioritize those things that, man, what are the things that I'm most thankful to my heavenly father for? Let me pour that out on my kids. And I think when you pray, when you pray for your kids, you ought to pray those prayers. You know, uh, I I used to get mad at myself, and I stopped doing it because I would drop my kids off at school and I would always go, God be with them today. And I was like, What you're this that's the stupidest prayer you could possibly pray because it's he's he's God, of course he's with them, like whatever. You know, so I've so now when I drop my kids off, I'm intentional, again, intentionality about the things that I want. God, help them to lead today, help them to be good examples of you to the kids who don't know you. Help them to, you know, be safe, be healthy. Yeah, help me to be the best dad I can be today. You know, you you pray these intentional things over them. God, be with their future. God, pray I pray they go to a Christian school. God, I pray for their future spouse, that they'd marry someone that loves you. You pray again, you live with intentionality, you pray with intentionality. All of a sudden it will begin to flow out of you. And when you have an understanding that um they're not gonna be in your control forever, yeah. So for the you know, 18 or so years that you have with them, um, to be intentional with those things so that when they're 28 and 38 and 48, you don't have to worry about um what they think about you or how you treated them or how you lived in front of them. They would know they'd be able to come on a podcast like this and talk about their talk about you the way that you talked about our dads and our parents. Um and really, I mean, it's our really our moms. Yeah, we're giving our dads the credit, but it's that's big facts. And also, just quickly, because we're we're we're done. We're we're not gonna talk about anything serious, but you know, you they did say it on here. Uh listen, your kids aren't kids forever, and so uh just because I want to make sure that I answer the emailer, and so I don't care about anybody else, I only care about Morgan and her email right now. Your kids aren't kids forever. Let them enjoy Santa. Like, what are we doing? Why are we taking the fun out of it? Like, I I understand all levels. All right, there's the let them enjoy Santa. If people get weird about Santa, oh Santa, Santa, Satan, Satan, Satan, like relax. It's the Easter bunny. Or like, no, I don't want Santa taking the credit for what I've done. It's like just give Santa the credit, dude. It's an imaginary person. You're jealous of a fake man. Yes, exactly. A fake mythical creature. Your two, your two-year-old is not able, your your five-year-old, six-year-old is not able to process when they get home from grandma and grandpa's house on Christmas night, and Santa came on Christmas Eve, and grandma and grandpa and aunts and uncles gave them all. They're not sitting in their bed going, man, my parents stink. They didn't buy me anything for Christmas. Nah. It's like just let have some fun, lay the elf on the shelf. Yeah, do the elf on the shelf. Listen, and get my boy cheat. Santa is a total cheat code. If you have little kids, let them believe in Santa as long as possible. I mean, within reason. Like, don't let them get made fun of at school. No, that's that's the that's Santa's a cheat code with the behavior. Like from September to December. You're like, dude, I'm telling them. They start acting up, it's like I'm going. We were at Target the other day, and I was taking pictures to send to Santa already. Like, that's because what Sai believes is like, oh no, we we take pictures and we email them to Santa. My kids used to call your dad. Yeah. My kids I used to have my kid, I'd say, I'm gonna call Santa right now, and I would call Andy and he'd be like, Hey boys and girls, it's Santa Claus. And my kids would be like, Oh my god, like freaking out.
SPEAKER_02Those videos where they do the Grinch and it like comes into their house and like the kids lose their mind. I don't think the Grinch, bro, just terrorize them. We'd be good at that. Just kick over the Christmas tree. Presents and like ripping them to shreds. Oh man. Cackling people.
SPEAKER_01Listen, people stress, they overthink the whole Santa thing. And if you're listening to this and you don't believe in Santa or you don't want your kids to believe in it, like that's it's each his own. Okay. Um, there's nothing evil about it. Like do it. Just have fun with it. You you get to enjoy the movies. And do you remember like when I think because I was like real little and I was just like, I think I just was like, I that's there's no way that's real. I was old. Really? Yeah. I'd say like 12. That and I had an older brother, so like I feel like Drew probably found out and then just told me. You know what I mean? But I don't know that just to be a jerk, probably too. Yeah. I probably made fun of him. You probably said something. Yeah, he got ripped mad. Santa's not real. Yeah, exactly. He got ripped and mad and was like, Well, I don't even care anyway, dude.
SPEAKER_00Scribed yourself to sleep. Yeah. No, I don't remember. I was like, I love the way my family handled Santa because they would give me gifts on Christmas Eve, and then there was just one big gift from Santa on Christmas morning. Oh, okay. So it's like they still got both. That's a good one. That's a good comment.
SPEAKER_01We did it when my kids were growing up. We would put all the presents out, and we would some of them we would write from Santa, and some of them we would write from us to the kids. So that there was like I feel like we did that. There was like a balance. Yes, exactly. Exactly. Also, yeah, my son is the worst at unwrapping presents, dude. Slow. Yeah, it's just like one little thing comes off like this. Like he saves it, yeah. Brother. Rip that thing. Rip it, dude. Yeah, it's just trying to opens it and he's like, okay, sweet.
SPEAKER_02Just immediately on to the next thing.
SPEAKER_01That's the thing too. Listen, again, Arnie Miller and everyone else that has younger kids, you included, like one day, the whole like Is that my phone? Oh no. One day the whole like not joy of Christmas, because my kids love Christmas. I love Christmas as an adult. It's the best. Um, but like the whole like whimsy. The yeah, the shock and awe of like, man, let's put the cookies out. Like, oh my goodness, that was the best. There's footprints, there's footprints in the in the chimney. And we didn't even have a chimney at our old like I had to wake both my kids up last Christmas. Like it's like eventually, like that will fade. And I just, you know, to like tell your three-year-old, like, yeah, Santa's not real. Like, like, mommy and daddy will have presents for you in the morning. Like, I'm sure they're still excited, but like it just I don't know. It's just the vibe.
SPEAKER_02Let them let them have fun. Excuse me.
SPEAKER_01Watch Elf. Elf's the best movie. Elf is like a movie you could watch at any time. You could watch it any time of the year. Yeah. It's so good. It's so funny. I watched uh I watched Will Farrell being interviewed the other day on I think it was Amy Polar's podcast, and he was saying that the Santa! When the guy says 10 a.m. you know, that that was ad-libbed. Like he just like thought to do it.
SPEAKER_00So the guy was seriously like scared. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01He he talks about it. He's like, I can't remember the guy's name. He was like, oh, phase on a phase on something. He was like, yeah, he's like when I did it, like the for the first time, he like freaked out and he said he started dying laughing. Like he thought it was so funny. He's like, so they added the movie. And it's like one of the most iconic like Christmas movie scenes or what other like movies like that. It's like a lot of iconic ad libs a lot, like it wasn't actually scripted.
SPEAKER_00Is that your favorite Christmas movie?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely. Because it was like when I was a kid, Home Alone 2. That's what it is, though, like when you were younger, right? Like that's when that came out. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like when I was a kid and when I was in like middle school, or I don't even know when Elf came out, but it was like we watched it multiple times. It's rained in you. Yeah. Elf's my second. It's Home Alone 2, then Elf, then Home Alone 2. 2003. Yeah. So I was seven. I was a junior in high school. It's five months old. Okay. Yeah, that's crazy. So it was it was like the perfect one for me when I was, I just think it was hilarious. Like when he jumps off the couch and grabs the tree and it falls over. Like that was one of the funniest things on our own. Ever think about how they do We actually watched it at your dad's house. How like they don't really improve. Like, when's the last time, like a really awesome Christmas? The Christmas Chronicles movie. That was good. Those are like an original one. Yeah. Yeah, those were good. Also, I do this is gonna sound again. You guys are gonna make fun of me. I do love the Hallmark Christmas. Like we watch them. Yeah, you're right. You're right. We're gonna make fun of you. Alright. But it's predictable, but it's it's nice, like, like it makes you feel nice. No, it's a good Christmas movie. It's good, wholesome TV. Underrated. It's a Netflix movie. It's called Klaus. Oh, with uh with um, what's his face? It's pretty good. It's like a carries in it or something. No, that's the Grinch, bro.
SPEAKER_00Oh. No, that's not what I'm thinking of. I'm trying to think of a Christmas movie that I grew up on. I didn't know.
SPEAKER_01I didn't I never really liked the Grinch. This is our game today. We're just talking about Christmas movies in the middle of August. It was that uh Colombian Christmas movie, right? Is Elf the number one Christmas movie?
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I guess so, yeah. What like on IMB thousands? Yeah. I'm just looking at Little Woman is a Christmas movie? Like diehard. It's talking about female elf. Little woman. Yeah, and I'm trying to think, I don't think there was a Christmas movie that came out when I was like growing up. And you were like, oh, I need to watch this every year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I watch elf once. The Santa Claus, maybe. You're like it, that's up yawning. I think I'm hungry. Yeah, no blood, low blood sugar, not getting enough oxygen to the brain. That and Georgie gotta be like. It came out in 1994. Oh, check that. Never mind. Those were good. I just again, yeah, right. There's too many of them now, though. There's a lot. Dude, Christmas with the cranks. Drew loves that movie. That movie's hilarious. My wife loves, and I know your dad loves uh Christmas vacation. Nah, not for me. It's a little overrated personal. Agreed.
SPEAKER_00I remember there was a I'm gonna get some flack for saying that, but uh we were watching a movie at La Lopez' house like ten years ago or something, and nobody was picking anything, so Drew was like, Oh, let's watch Christmas with the cranks, and everyone hated it. He was like, Well, no one picked a movie anyway, and then he just got so mad and left.
SPEAKER_01What's the one with Ryan Reynolds? I didn't know he was in a Christmas movie. Four Christmases, isn't it? Oh no, that's not him. Who's in that four Christmases? Vince Vaughn? Who's in Christmas? Yeah, I don't know. Look it up. Four Christmases.
SPEAKER_00Four Christmases?
SPEAKER_01What movie am I thinking of? I don't know. Four like the number? Yeah. Who's that on there? Vince Vaughn. Vince Vaughn. Never mind. Never mind. I don't know which one Ryan Reynolds is in. I think I mixed that up with uh the one that he's in with the blonde girl. What's the heck is that movie? Where he's fat at the beginning. Yeah, what the heck's that movie called? Uh just friends? Just friends. That's it. Yeah, that's it. That's hilarious. That's not a Christmas movie. Nah, dude. Hallmark, Hallmark Christmas is where we need to be at. Nah, that's that's crazy talking, bro. Put it on. I'm telling you, just put it on in the background while you're doing stuff. I'm not gonna do that.
SPEAKER_00It's great. What's the Christmas movie with Zoe D. Chanel? Is that Elf? That's Elf, dog. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's the Josie. I really can't stay. Baby, it's cool.
SPEAKER_02She's like in the shower. He's like just in the bathtub. Dude, he's like when he runs into the locker. Dude, it's iconic. That's the best, dude.
SPEAKER_01Man, we're gonna do a watch. Now the best scene in Elf is when he bounces off the couch and jumps on the side. That's what I said before. He's like, I got it. That's the best scene. Or the snowballs in the uh park. Or I can't tell you how many got away. He's like, I can't tell you how many times, like when my kids or something, let I've burped and I'd be like, Did you hear that? That's probably the most quotable. Oh man, that's a great classic. Well, that really took a turn.
SPEAKER_00I bought you got fried on Summer's Instagram story the other day.
SPEAKER_01Bro, we could talk about that another day. Did you see that? Nicole was showing me some of it, yeah. I think what I was saying, I understand what she's saying, but I think what I was saying makes more sense. Why in everything else in life we count from the bottom up. Agreed. Except the refrigerator. Yeah. So my wife was saying she asked Harper to get something, and she's like, it's on the second shelf. And so Harper went one, two, and she's like, it's not here. And then Summer came in and she went, second shelf, and she went like down. I would agree with Summer there. Yeah. But that doesn't, but my argument was why why would do we do that with the refrigerator? Yeah. Nothing else. We should do that for the beginning of our next one. We're definitely not going to remember. But it's like, what are some other things like that? It only applies to one thing.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I'm I'm being biased in my answer because I know the situation. If someone had asked me like how you asked Harper, I wonder what my answer would be. You know what I mean? Right. Right in the moment.
SPEAKER_01I I yeah, I agree with that. Like at first, I was like, no, that makes sense. Like your argument was like. Well, like if it was like a take remove the refrigerator, and if it was like a dresser, like, oh, my white shirts are in the second drawer, you're probably going to the second one from the bottom. Yeah. Like if you said I live on the second floor of my apartment, you're not going to applies the most. Yeah, that was the best thing. Or if I said, hey, I left it on the second step. Yeah, that's true. Dude. Yeah. You're swaying me. See? But then yeah. Yeah. So I get anything with drawers or shelves, it's it's it's top down. Yeah. Stairs or levels, it's bottom up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't even think I don't even think it just applies to drawers. I think it's only the fridge. No, because you said the dresser. I wouldn't say the second drawer. Like the second one. If your dresser has if you have like a dresser that's like waist height and it has four drawers, and I said it's in the second drawer, you wouldn't have to be.
SPEAKER_02I would go from the top. You wouldn't either. Don't act like that.
SPEAKER_01You're just saying that. So it's just things with drawers. Drawers are shelves. Yeah. Shelves. Yeah. I don't know, dude. Alright, alright. If someone was like open up a paint, grab that. Like if you're at cot on the second shelf. It's like it's on the second shelf. You're not going to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_00You're going from the top. Yeah. Because I would never probably at the grocery store. I would never say the first shelf. I'd always say the top shelf. So because that's one in my mind, I'd go down from the top.
SPEAKER_01I'd probably say like second one down. Honestly. True. Be more specific. Man, I do love the grocery store. Now I gotta go to the grocery store. My dad flamed guys that go to the grocery store on Wednesday night and thought of you, dude. He was like, I don't go to the my wife into the grocery store because I don't go, I'm a man. I was like, oh definitely. I love it. He loves it. I think about it every day. It's like one of my favorite things to do. Pick up a Reese's at the checkout counter. I'll always. Well, you need a beverage for the ride home. Of course. That's like a staple. Me and Drew. Always. It's like, no, you need a drink. If you're in the car, if you're going anywhere more than eight minutes away, you need a drink in the car. That's crazy. It's not. Or an iced tea out of a cup from home. That's weird. Don't bring your cups from home outside of your home, please. Oh baby. That's weird. Nothing like a little mason glass of coffee. Nicole bring a mug of like coffee in the car. It's like, that's psychopath behavior. How about I brought my nice cup of iced tea? Mateo was there to work yesterday. Hadn't had any caffeine all day. I was like, ooh, I'm gonna make a nice iced tea. I'm gonna drink it at my desk while I work. I literally opened the door to the office down here, and one of those stupid Japanese bugs flies right into my iced tea. So you can drink it. Just upside down. It drowned himself in iced tea. He walks in, he's like, dude, like what just happened. I just show him the thing. I'm like, how my day is gone. That's insane. So it's so annoying. Did you go get a new one? No. Oh, you should have done. I'm so mad about it. I've killed every lantern fly I've seen. Dude, I didn't have any caffeine yesterday and I was struggling. At all? Yeah. Like the whole day. I just like didn't never get around to it. Do you guys consume caffeine? Like morning or every day. I just didn't get around. I didn't say I was so busy trading on the stock market all day, dude.
SPEAKER_03When did I ever say that?
SPEAKER_01I didn't have any time to walk to the refrigerator and open it and grab a caffeine. I didn't have a caffeine in the refrigerator. I didn't have a caffeine.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I didn't have any yet today either.
SPEAKER_01My brain is fried. Thank you so much for watching. That's it for the pod. Hope that you have a great day. Enjoy your children. Be the parent God has called you to be. And long live Santa. Bye.
