00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:17.520 Because we know at this point there is um uh almost universally, not universally, but but pretty broadly, it was understood that the Messiah would come from the line of David, from the lineage of David. 00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:24.319 So even the Jews were looking for the Messiah that would come, and he would come through that kingly line, right? 00:03:24.560 --> 00:03:29.840 And so Jesus is making this a point because it's a point where everybody, almost everybody's on the same page. 00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:35.520 Why is it, he asks, is verse 41, that the Messiah is said to be the son of David. 00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:46.400 So Old Testament prophecies that point to this truth is in Isaiah chapter 11, in Isaiah chapter 16, Jeremiah 22, Ezekiel 37. 00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:52.479 There's all these Old Testament prophecies that push towards the Messiah and what family he would be a part of. 00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:54.400 A son of David, right? 00:03:54.560 --> 00:03:56.639 That's the family that he's gonna be a part of. 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:05.360 But what Jesus is doing is he is about to correct the notion that it would simply be a man coming from that lineage. 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:09.120 And this is huge for us as believers, right? 00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:35.920 So the crowds are listening, and Jesus goes, for David himself wrote in the book of Psalms, he's about to quote Psalm 110, which is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament, right? 00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:40.720 It's alluded to, it's it's mentioned over and over and over throughout the New Testament. 00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:53.199 For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms, the Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet. 00:04:53.279 --> 00:04:55.040 And everybody said, huh? 00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:00.399 So just real quick, footstool. 00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:03.040 I'm gonna make your enemies your footstool. 00:05:03.199 --> 00:05:10.000 The the imagery there, the understanding, it's a phrase that communicates total to victory, divine vindication. 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:11.360 It's like a universal rule. 00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:22.160 I'm uh there's even um there's even uh archaeological digs that would show past cultures where there would be victors standing on top of those they defeated, right? 00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:30.720 So we're we're getting this imagery from David, and he says, Until I humble your enemies, making them your footstool under your feet. 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:37.040 Verse 44, since David called the Messiah Lord, how can the Messiah be his son? 00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:43.040 Um there's two words that get used here. 00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:45.279 The Lord said to my Lord. 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:51.759 Uh the Lord, that word uh that would have been used was Yahweh said to my Lord, Adonai. 00:05:52.319 --> 00:05:56.639 So Yahweh, God, Adonai means master. 00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:06.800 But in the context, so Jesus is saying something shocking in this moment, and none of you were shocked by it because you don't, I'm about to give you the insider information. 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:16.639 You would never have in that Near Eastern culture, in that time period, anybody that was a father called their son master. 00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:24.480 You would never like honor was always extended the most to the ancestors and the least to the descendants. 00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:25.680 You with me on that? 00:06:49.519 --> 00:06:51.439 He's the greatest king, right? 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:55.040 And and how can this great master be his son? 00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:59.120 Because there's there's things that aren't matching up in everybody's minds. 00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:06.879 The Messiah is going to come from the line of David, yet David is saying that the Messiah is his master, but we don't say things like that. 00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:14.560 It's not making sense unless unless that Adonai is greater than a king. 00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:18.399 And the only thing that could be greater than the king is that which is divine. 00:07:18.720 --> 00:07:32.240 So the way that David could say that my Lord said to my Lord, or my Yahweh said to my Adonai, the only way he could say that is to recognize that the master that was to come would be divine in nature, not just part of his lineage. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:40.160 So this is critical because most people thought, okay, the Messiah would just be a man. 00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:49.199 And Jesus is pushing on that notion, flipping it upside down that no, the Messiah would not just be a man, though he would be a man, but he would be more than that. 00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:49.920 Right? 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:13.759 They wanted the current political landscape to be overthrown and to shift. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:16.720 That's what they wanted out of their Messiah. 00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:29.360 But when you realize the Messiah possesses a divine authority, Jesus is saying he's not just somebody that's going to deliver the people, but he's going to deliver the planet. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:30.559 Right?
