Hey, welcome to the Ivan Line Podcast. We're so glad you're here. Um, episode 16 looks just a little different. We're actually at uh a very well-known restaurant, a local um hangout, a local place that everybody, if you grew up in Panama City, you know JR's Rib Shack, and we're with uh the R of Mr. Jr. Right with Mr. Randy right here with us. Yes, the renowned Randy Beats. Glad to be here.
SPEAKER_01Yes, man, big hunter, big fisherman, and the man at JR's Rib Shack.
SPEAKER_00I think you actually, it's it's kind of ironic. He actually made, he debuted the episode last uh the last episode we just did. He had we had a little bit of a we kind of featured him, and it just so happened to work out we we did an episode with him the next episode when we were with David Wood. We told the story. Yeah, yeah. You're a legend, you know that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, see he's a legend. Many of y'all know him as a legend. Legend of my own mind. And well known. I'm telling you right now, these I mean, these adventures that you've been on. I've been on a few with you over the years, and I'm telling you right now.
SPEAKER_03We have been on many adventures, me and Scott Kelly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'll say this, so uh, and I'm gonna go ahead and give you uh I'm gonna go ahead and give you you with the shout-out before we get started, because I imagine this thing's gonna get pretty thick, and then we ain't gonna be able to circle back around. I think you might as well go ahead and hit it while you're here. Is uh so listen, if you ain't never had good barbecue, let me let me point you to a good direction. Come on over to JR's Rib Shack in Callaway, Florida. Um I remember as a kid, it was always a treat whenever dad said, Hey, we're gonna we're gonna go to JR's. And I rem and me and my little brother, he's been on the episode too. We loved coming here as a kid, and honestly, uh they got great, we got a slab of ribs waiting on us right now. Oh, yeah. And uh so we're fired up about it. Y'all make sure you're coming. This is this is where the podcast eats. Y'all come and give them a try. And uh, and and you might, you might, not a guarantee, but you might see the man himself here.
SPEAKER_01If you do, go on and ask him, say, come on, tell me what you got.
SPEAKER_03Well, I appreciate it, guys. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_01Well, um, I got I did one of the things too that I I want to share about this, because a lot of people know Randy as a hunter and a fisherman. Uh, but I but I want to give him a shout out because this is the thing that that I know of him because I knew him when we were younger. Randy is somewhat of an athlete. Now tell us a little bit about now. This guy went to the Little League World Series.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we did. Um, I was fortunate enough in Little League. I started at eight years old at Oakland Terrace, and uh my he's my stepdad now, then he was my coach, and uh he put together an incredible team. And from the age of I would say 10 to 12, uh don't think we ever lost a game. Come on in three years. Never lost a game. I mean, I don't we were the team in mid it was mid-city um approximately 1976. And uh we uh ended up our all-star team. Uh we ended up winning and going to the Dixie World Series uh when I was 13 and 14. And uh had a great experience. We didn't win it, but we went, and uh we won the state championship here. Come on. We went to Alexandria, Louisiana, and uh I was a pitcher and um we uh we had a good time. That's good.
SPEAKER_01It was good days, good days. Of course, he was uh the J JV quarterback on the JV football team in our high school. Yeah, playing a little football at Mosley.
SPEAKER_00Um he coached a little football too.
SPEAKER_03Coached old coon and yes, I did. I coached your little boy, and um Southport had the league, and uh we uh we had a good time. Yeah, we didn't know. We had a good time.
SPEAKER_01Now uh in high school we we started coon hunting. I mean I did. I remember the very first night we went that that me and you went off and went right down there close to my mom and dad's house. Yeah, and uh Randy shot the coon out. And uh I don't even know where you got rosebud at. But I'm talking about it was a it was a like a a gift because she was already grown. Did you have to pay anything for it?
SPEAKER_03Because she got her for free. I got her for free. And uh got her the dog pound. She I got her. I I asked my daddy, I said, Daddy, I want a hunting dog. He goes, Well, what kind of hunting dog? I said, uh, like a walker, like Scott Kelly's got. Scott Kelly had a dog named Babe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03He said, Well, I can't afford to go get one of high-priced coon dogs, and uh we'll go to Dog Pound. I was like, let's go to Dog Pound. And I walked around that dog pound, and that's the only hound that was in there. But she was sort of old looking, but she had a good voice on her. And we got her. It was like $32, I think. And we walked out with Rosebud. That's what I named her. That's a good thought, man.
SPEAKER_01We had quite a blast there.
SPEAKER_03I turned that joker out in the yard, and next thing you know, she's out in the back of the yard. Oh, she had a bark. I mean, she she won all the tree and contests. We know we had a top for it. She would win the tree contest. That's how many barks they bark in a minute. Yeah, and the coon just up in the cage in the tree, and there's a contest, and you get a big old trophy. Oh, yeah. A rosebud, I walk away that trophy every time we had a hunt. But she was good. But if she ran in the back and she treated her first coon, I was in I was in love. I was like, Rosebud, you are the queen. And boy, I fed her Alpo. I mean, I fattened her up. She was eating good. And yeah, me and Scott, we ran in dolls. Oh man, we go, man. Three, four nights a week. And then we call, we get stuck in the mud. Call Tommy Riley. Or Charlie Bollinger.
SPEAKER_01You had to be careful there if you go knock on his front porch.
SPEAKER_03Hey, I never knew Charlie till I got stuck, and you sent me to his house that night at one in the morning, and I was like, I got to Charlie Bollinger's house. I knocked on the door. I never met a man in my life. He said, He's a nice man. And I was like, I knocked on the door, and all of a sudden I heard that doorknob, and the first thing I saw was a 357 barrel right between my eyes. What do you want? I put my hands on him. I said, Charlie, I know it's Charlie, right? I said, I'm Randy Beavis. I said, Don't shoot. I said, I'm with Scott Kelly, your neighbor. I'm with Scott. We're stuck. And then he put the gun down and thank God he didn't shoot me.
SPEAKER_01I think the boys had BB guns too. For big ass was young. They was backing him up with big guns.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're probably bagging him up with BB guns. Yeah, no burst.
SPEAKER_01I'd rather get shot with the big gun. Somebody start stinging you with BB guns.
SPEAKER_00So I gotta know. All right, so y'all grew up together. You're probably one of my dad's oldest friends that I know. And so, like, I gotta know what's one of the the you know, what's one of the craziest stories you know of my of my dad?
SPEAKER_03Okay, in mostly high school or senior year, I mean you can get away with a lot as a senior, you know. And um, I get to school one day and I'm walking through the hallway going on my first period, and they used to tap me on the shoulder, Randy Beaver's for Possum Queen. And I'm like, what? Possum Queen? What the heck? And next thing you know, somebody else touch me on the head, and I'm like, they're like, Randy Beavis gonna win Possum Queen. I'm like, what are you talking about? And they just walk off laughing, and everybody, next thing you know, I look up on the wall and there's big signs all down the hallway. Randy Beavis for Possum Queen. And I'm like, Scott Kelly, it's all gone.
SPEAKER_01And uh how long did it take you to make them signs? I think I had some. It was an art class. I think you had a help because there was a bunch of them. Yeah, they wouldn't look good. I thought, hey, but why don't we see if run run somebody for Possum Queen? I don't know. And I thought Possum Queen.
SPEAKER_00Well, Possum Queen.
SPEAKER_01It was all saw Possum Queen. Yeah. I don't think it was that big a thing for us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but uh, I was a joke in school.
SPEAKER_01But well, he he won.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I won. All right, well, okay, the next next day, Scott was on a roll. Okay, the classes this is a serious true story. Yes, this is only Scott Kelly. We waited for the bell to ring and all the people in the hallways. And what does Scott Kelly do? He takes an armadilla and lets him loose down the hallway. And I'm gonna tell you what, you have never seen people run. I guess they've never seen an armadilla because we catch them all the time. The dogs, but they were and they were not angels, they would catch an armadilla with them.
SPEAKER_01And that was like a no-no for a dog.
SPEAKER_03A no-no, they do they're in trouble, yeah. But Scott had got one caught, and because babe loved armadillo. Yeah, we've had to pull how many times we pulled her out of a hole.
SPEAKER_01Well, the other thing, too, about about these armadillas, like Wild Kingdom, you'd think, man, that shell, man, they hold up when it was kids. But no, old dog crunched one second. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But Scott didn't get in no trouble for that because he didn't get caught. Yeah, you know, he's thinking, he's good. It was good. I mean, all you high school people out there know Scott Kelly. He was he was a good boy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, we we had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun. We got stuck a bunch of times. Uh we didn't have four-wheel drives for a long time until you bought that big old green Ford.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. We all had two-wheel drives, and we had our guns, we had our 22 rifles up in the window. On the back, yeah. It's cool. We go to school with the 22 rifle in the window. I mean, it was no big deal. Dog mouse in the back, yeah. Dog box in the back, and uh we had some good times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we really did.
SPEAKER_00Now tell me this. Were you around? Was he around whenever you put the the the pocket knife in your nose?
SPEAKER_01No. But I'll tell that story. I don't know if you remember this happening, but remember that knife I used to say I've had this knife since first grade. First grade pocket. First grade first knife. Yeah. It's it was really sharp. Both of them was really sharpened down to nothing. And they would crisscross a little bit at the end. And so I was in Mr. Sheffield's class in marketing class, and uh, and they had a film strip. You know, nowadays don't have videos, but they had a film strip going, and I was bored. And I took that knife and I was piddling around with it. You know, you could have a knife in school back then, and nobody thought about you still. No problem except for yourself. And I took that knife and I held that knife up to my nose. I don't even know why I done it, but I let that knife go and it closed inside my nose as if I I pierced my nose. Blood's pouring out my nose. I cannot get it loose. And I'm here bleeding all over the place, people trying to give me something. Well, I finally got it loose, and the very next day, Mr. Sheffield, what a great guy. He walks in there, and I'd showed that knife enough to where he said. Have y'all ever seen my knife before? And he pulled his knife out and showed a little pocket knife. He was getting he was messing with me. He said, Well, I'm not gonna stick it in my nose and close it up, but it bled, man. I had people like I think uh Janet Heaton was in there and old uh James Owens and uh um Daryl Melvin, some of that bunch like that was all up on there.
SPEAKER_03And I do have a thing I would like to say, Mr. Faber, which you know uh he was our favorite art teacher, Russia Soul. He was a great man, but in our senior year, we had art one, me and him, yeah, art two, yes, back to back. And Mr. Faber said to us, it was it was deer hunt season, he said, Boys, you you'll get a straight A from me if you don't come one day in my class. But all I gotta say is y'all be back for third period and you bring me some deer meat. That's it. That was it.
SPEAKER_01Well, do you remember when me and you and Donnie Burkett went over to run the deer? Yep. Uh so we went and run the deer over right across Deer Point Damn Highway going in there toward Mill Bio. Well, we lost it, lost him with Donnie's dogs and didn't ever kill him. So I said, let's go back through the let's go back through the clay pit and come out on 390. And uh, and Donnie says, Don't worry, man. I said, My mom is about to go to work. He said, What's the odds of you getting behind your mama? And so when I pulled out on Deer Point Down High was coming around, I got to end the high point road and she's at the stop side. So I pulled on over to the side road, she pulled out behind me and just pulled over and said, Your dad will see you. And so they're riding by me going, so I got in trouble over that deal. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But there were good times. We got to hunt all morning long until like 10 o'clock. Oh, yeah, had a blast.
SPEAKER_01I mean, people don't get to do that nowadays, you know. So uh yeah. Now, I'll another thing too. This dude right here, Fly Fisher, Tommy. You talk to me. I love the flyfish. I love flyfish. He can roll it up under trees. Probably uh your papa's very good, but Randy's probably as good as I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01At rolling.
SPEAKER_03Oh now, well, say that. I'm I'm pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's gonna catch some fish too. You know, I've seen Oh, I love it.
SPEAKER_03It's my passion. My granddaddy taught me when I was eight years old on Dead Lakes, and hey, my granddaddy taught me I I think the first time I went, I was throwing the fly, I'm using all my arm. Well, he wasn't having none of that. He grabbed a roll of duct tape, and he had these old chairs with armrests on it. He took the wrapped my arm with duct tape, and he took duct tape my arm to that chair, and he goes, Now go fishing. And it was like this. He said, You've been trying to tell me it's all right here, Randy. Whoa. And I was doing all this, but he was smart. He took that duct tape, and I'll tell you, it made a fly fisherman out of me.
SPEAKER_01That's the same exact my daddy didn't take me, but he's in my arm, but he said, Something you ain't popping a bull. Yeah, he said, That's right all from the elbow down, elbow down, lay it in there.
SPEAKER_03So and I love it. I mean, that it's just an easy way to catch brumping.
SPEAKER_01Don't have to worry about old crickets and worm, getting your hands all you know, with the stuff and the peacefulness, especially like places like Deer Point, like in the evenings, it's all sound, it's all and when that flies out there and you just make him flutter a little bit and just the action of a big old red black coming up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Oh man, they ain't not like it. They ain't not like it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Man. Yeah, so uh all right, I got a story. All right. Alright, so let me lay a little groundwork here. So those people that don't know about coon hunting, now back when me and Randy was coon hunting, you could make a little money on the hides. Oh, yeah. You can make anywhere from Kent's for a company. Oh, yeah, Kent down the same joke. Eight to eight to twenty dollars a hide. You know, that helped a man's pocket, you know. We did we did well. And so there was a lot of other people that were coon hunting that was killing them too. So me and Randy was hunting some areas up there, and one particular time we were hunting up, you know, toward Kyor. A lot of good places up there. You had the ice pond and different places like that. Uh but one of the one of this particular time we was up there hunting, and uh I met him one evening over there close to road twelve. So we were looking for some places, and every place we went there was people hunting, had dogs out. I said, Man, ain't nowhere to hunt. So I said, I remember this one little place that at Dead End Road had an old bridge that went across this old creek. Had a bunch of grapevines and everything. And so me and Randy drove over there. It was dark already. And so he said, Well, Scott, both our trucks are the same way, the little Toyotas we had. He said, You weigh a little less than me. He said, So you go drive across that old bridge first, and if it breaks, you know. So that was a hairy. Oh, yeah. So I drove this bridge, drove across this bridge. We got to the other side. And when we got over there, there hadn't been a soul over there. So I thought, man, we had some new ground. So just as I got to the other side, I got to look it. And Randy had seen, he says, hold up, hold up on the CB. So I stopped and I missed the track. It's great, big old coon track. You see the wetness of where his claws went across the road. So we stopped. We had a dog, Randy had a dog named Smokey, I had a dog named Boss, and we had another dog named Boba. So we turned them loose, and before they hit the ground, they was running this cook. I normally squalled off. Now we just right there at the fork of a road. And so they took off and they nearly went out of here. So Randy jumped in his truck, went to the right down the fork, and I went to the left. So I got on down there a little ways, and uh I got stopped a couple of times. I could hear the dogs. Well, when I got a little closer, trying to get closer to the dogs, I started noticing something, a little fence. And when I pulled and made a curve and looked through that fence, my heart just about dropped because there was these huge tombstones out there, crosses. I'd never, you know, them great big old tombstones under these big live oaks. And I thought, my goodness, it's dark, but it's darker out there up under them. And you know, scared of the dark, but I'm by myself and I'm thinking, you know, man, this is kind of eerie. So I pulled on a little further and there's a barn sitting there. Well, I'm listening, them dogs is coming strong toward me. And uh so I I got to look and I seen something kind of scurrying through the tombstones, and and I couldn't tell what it was, but it was small, and it ran on up and hit this huge oak tree that was hollow. That thing went right up and I swung my light over there, and he was had climbed to the top of that thing and went down in a hollow tree and had his head sticking out. Biggest coon I'd ever seen. Big old silver bag. Oh, yeah, he was big. And so the dogs come on, they weren't far behind him. They was jumping up and down, and he was right against this old barn, and the barn had a bunch of old grapevines and stuff on it, and it wasn't 50 yards from the truck. So Randy called me on the radio and said, Hey, where's the dogs? I said, Look, they treed, come on around here. So I walked on out there to where the dogs were treed, and noticed there was this weird looking uh in the grapevines right beside it, this weird looking wagon there. I'd never seen one like it. Had these windows all the way around the sides of it, wasn't very tall, had a place to sit on top, and I thought, that's the weirdest wagon I've ever seen. But I got to thinking, I thought, man, this graveyard, this would be the greatest time to mess with old Randy. Because he don't even know. And it scared me when I got here looking at these graves. I'm gonna do something to scare you. So I thought, man, I'll hide in this wagon. So I walked to the back and opened up the little back door, and it wasn't very wide. And I thought, man, this is a short wagon. How am I gonna sit in here? So I crawled on up in there, and the little door closed behind me, and I thought, man, I didn't want that to close. And I grabbed it, and I realized once it closed what it really was. It was a hearse wagon. Oh man. And I'm there, and they ain't no latch to open from the inside because people don't open them from the inside. You did. So I'm lay, I'm looking around there and I'm thought, man, well, Randy will get me out of here when he gets over here. Well, I I I got to looking and I thought, man, I seen his truck coming. I thought, man, I'm gonna I'm gonna mess with him when he gets here. So I laid back. And when I laid back, I laid on this, I didn't realize there's an overcoat behind me and a top hat laying there. And what was under that overcoat, I could feel bones up under there. And I turned my light on and looked, and there was a skull laying there, and I thought, my goodness, the last living being of that community must have had no one to bury him, and he's in that hearse wagon. I'm laying there on top of him, and I thought, my goodness. So Randy's probably 30 yards from the tree at that time. So I let out a blood-curdling scream, and it it shook me so bad I couldn't hardly stand it. My light was on. Randy's seeing something over there. The dogs start barking a whole lot more, start squalling. Randy's spooked, he don't even know where I'm at. So Randy runs to the truck. You remember that? And uh, and so the dog he starts hollering for the dogs. Well, he didn't know I had tied the dogs to the front of that wagon before he got there, because you know, a lot of times they jump up down on a tree, you want to tie them back. And so once he started hollering for them, the dog starts tugging this wagon. Well, the more he tugs, the more, the more he calls, the more they tug. The coon hears them just squalling even louder. He bails out of that hollow tree. So the dogs start following the coon and trying to tug and break the wagon loose. And so the wagon is following the dogs. He they're pulling it like a horse through this cemetery. Randy's over at his truck going, what in the world? He sees the light inside the hearse wagon. So Randy jumps around there and it scared him to death. So he grabs a 22 rifle. He's thinking something's after the dogs, not knowing where I'm at. So he takes that 22 rifle and shoots. I'm I mean, she unloads this 22. I'm talking about Marlin 22. Oh, yeah, Marlin 22, every shot in it. I'm talking you're gonna unload that thing in about 10 seconds. I'm talking about he's hitting tombstones, hitting trees. He busts window out of the wagon. I'm laying real tight. I mean, it once you're lucky to be alive. Yeah, once it all settles, I'm thinking, what in the world? I just keep laying there. I think I don't know what's going on. And he didn't shoot no more. And I saw I just rolled out of the busted glass and got out there on the ground. I'm looking around and I think, man, looky. Where's Randy? Randy's truck ain't over there. Where's the dogs?
unknownThey're
SPEAKER_01Cowered down. I thought they hit that he killed them. They're just cowered down, scared slapped to death. So I I gather them up, I load them up in the truck. I still ain't seen Randy. So I get in my truck, I drive all the way to his house. Randy's truck is parked on his front porch. He just went in and just pulled it up on a busted the front porch, just all jacked up on the front porch. And I thought, man, I beat on his door, beat on his door. He he finally came to the door and let me in. He was mad as a hornet at me. I said, Man, hey, look, I'll be honest with you, this is what happened. I shared it with him. We laughed finally. And uh and he got looking. He said, What in the world? What in the world is that in your shirt? And in my flannel shirt, there was four gold teeth hung up in my shirt. Me and Randy took them jokers to the pond show. Made some good guys. Yes, sir. $1,200, $600 a piece. We went after another adventure the next, well, the next daytime. We didn't hit at night very much. He was kind of leery after that. I was really looking at it. I'm always getting short in the stick with you. I mean, I think no, I was worried he was gonna get me. I was really worried Randy was gonna get me on this deal. I thought I was the gun shy after that. I didn't know what to do. No, you was a good shot. I felt like Bonnie and Clyde, man. So there you go. I ain't even lying on that deal.
SPEAKER_00Man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I true story. Yeah. True story. Oh boy.
SPEAKER_00My goodness.
SPEAKER_01So, Randy, tell us about uh the big buck you killed last year.
SPEAKER_03Well, um, I'm very fortunate. Um, I got a little piece of land in uh Blakeley, Georgia, and uh I've had it for three years now, and uh, you know, when you get a little piece, you can feed your deer protein, and man, I grew me a nice buck, and uh I was fortunate enough to give him uh last boat season with my crossbow. Come on. Shot him with crossbow, scored 145 inches, and come on, man. Very happy with him. But uh, you know, Blakely, uh, I've been hunting there 10 years, and I had a rough start to my first adventure hunting in Georgia, other than we were raccoon hunting with my own. Oh, we've got to tell that story next. We'll have to tell that story next. But uh deer hunting, uh I I I run into some problems my first year there. Okay, we had a hundred-acre lease, and uh, we were just getting our foot in the door, and you know, South Georgia people, they're sort of Panama City boys, they just they don't really welcome you to it to begin with. Right. I mean, hey, you gotta earn it. Yeah, you ain't from Randomie, you gotta earn it. Yeah. So I'm trying to earn it. I got me a hundred-acre lease, me and my buddy John Gruber. And so we're up there hunting one day, and I I drive by this other farm on the way to our little hundred acres, and I started seeing a bunch of deer out in this peanut field, and there was a little farmhouse, and I was like, Oh, where's that guy let me hunt? And uh I wouldn't ever think no more about it, and I was scared to go ask him. So the rut started to come around, and I'd drive by you know, on my way to my stand, and I'd look out there in that field, and one day I saw a buck that was the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life. He was standing out there with a bunch of does. Well, that made me really want to go talk to the farmer. So one day about lunch, I went over there and I saw a bunch of vehicles around the house. I knocked on the door, and his name was TC, and I said, uh, hey, I'm Brandy Beavis. Uh, I'm from Panama City. And when I said that, his his old you know, expression changed a little bit, and I think he knew I was gonna ask him. And I said, uh, do you ever let anybody hunt? Uh I've been seeing this really, really big buck over. He goes, Oh, yeah, I've been seeing the old buck too. But I don't I don't really let too many people hunt around here on my property. And I'm like, Well, I sure would love to, and uh, but um, I have a restaurant, and I told him I had a restaurant in Panama City to bar. He goes, What kind of restaurant? I said, Barbecue, and his old eyes lit up, and I said, Well, you like barbecue? Oh, I love it. So he said, What's the name of it? I said, JR's Rib Shack. And he said, Oh, I love ribs. I said, Well, I I haven't had a slab in my ice chest. Would you like it? Yes, oh yeah. So I had a cold slab, you know, put on the grill of the hunting camp. So I gave it to him and he said, Well, thank you. He said, Well, let me let me come by by tomorrow and talk to me. Oh, so I think you want to try and see how good the ribs look like a smart guy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So next day I used by his house and uh little door said, Hey, Mr. TC, I said, How was them ribs? Oh boy, it was good. They was good. He said, You want to hunt that deer? And I'm like, Oh yes, sir. And I said, Is that gonna be that easy? So anyway, uh, so I said, Well, I come by next weekend and I'm I'm gonna set me up a pop-up tent, and I'm gonna get out in your peanut field. It looked like a hay bale, and it's one of them little tent deals, but it looks like a hay bale.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I set that jugger up, you know, and I was already, I told my boys, I said, my buddies at a campus, I'm I'm getting to hunt this property on TCs. I said, I'm fixing to kill the biggest buck you've ever seen in your life. And they rolled their eyes, like, you ain't gonna kill them, you know, whatever. Anyway, uh, it was like a Friday afternoon, and uh, got in there, it was a little overcast, and it didn't have good sunlight, you know, that day. I remember it was real cloudy. And I'm sitting there and getting ready, and I had my little tripod deal in there, I got my gun ready, and all of a sudden the dough started coming out in the peanuts in that corner. And it and the way it's feel was you had all you know how them farmers up there, they got metal stuff, just old plows, old discs, old drums, old peanut trailers, all the way down the thing. Well, it wasn't no different all the way to the corner, but there was some barrels, some big barrels that, you know, drums like you know, but they were all the paint was faded off of them, and I I didn't know what they were. It could have been grain bins or whatever. Yeah, but one of them was sort of light pink, you know, and it's still a wet. I mean, deer, as a does come down, it's getting sort of dark, and the deers, when they come in front of that pink thing, I'm like, man, I can see them good. I can see them real good. And it started getting real dark, and then all of a sudden I'm like, please come on. I seen you come out in the corner. And it's when I was I mean, I was looking at a butt from the highway at four or five hundred yards. Yeah. When I got to see him at 150 yards, I was like, oh my goodness, this was uh this was a hey, I looked at him good with my binoculars, and I could count eight on one side. He was had kickers, stickers. He was at least 20 inches wide. He was a monster. And I got to looking at him, and it started getting dark, and I put my crosshairs on him. I got to where I couldn't see my crosshairs. I'm like, please come up a little more. There was like got to be about 10 does out there, and there was him. And he came, and I said, You walk a little bit further, you get right in front of that pink barrel. I'm gonna bust you, I can silhouette you. And about that time, he got it right there, that pink barrel. I put I could see my crosshairs and him silhouetted. I'm like, I'm gonna shoot you. And when I shot, it was like the Dukes of Hazard. That was a big gas drone. Oh my god in 19, I don't know, 70s or 80s, and it was like a 500-gallon, and I didn't know this at the time for sure, and I didn't ask him, but when I shot, I'd never uh only in the movies I thought that you know an explosion when you shoot a gas drone, you know. But no, it was real. It was a big I could feel it melted some of the plastic on on that at 150 yards. That's how big the blast was. I'm like, oh my god. And next thing you know, I'm looking and I see bellies flopping all over the field. I mean, I got I'm talking like I got a I got a whole herd dead, and they're flopping in the field. The biggest thing, there was a fire. I mean, it caught the woods on fire. I mean, that Pinot field then there was big woods. And I didn't know what I freaked out. And I I was 400 yards from the highway in his house of where I was parked in his yard, and I took off running across there, and I'm looking back, I'm like, oh my god, I just set the whole world woods on fire. I gotta start a major forest fire. So I'm running to his house, and then I see old TC on this porch, and his eyes are about that big a round, and he sees it. I mean, the woods had caught it had been really dry, and it was windy, I guess the storm, and it was the whole, it was a forest fire. And I go run out there, call the fire department. I'm running, call the fire department. I'm running. And there was a little volunteer apartment right down the road, and of course he had the guy's number, you know, he calls him up, we got a fire. By the time I made up the house, I tried to tell him what happened. He said, What you do, boy? I said, I just shot a deer and I had something to exploded. He goes, Oh, that's just an old gas drum. I had about two 200 gallons of gas in it. I'm like, oh my gosh. I said, We'll get and by that time I heard I heard a little siren fire of them. I'm like, oh my gosh. And then I was like, you can get a hold of them, yeah. We got the old coming, sheriff's department's coming, everybody in the room here is coming. So I said, You got any water? He said, Man, we you can't take that kind of water. I ain't got a water truck. You just got to wait for the fire department. So I got my truck, and I followed the fire department, the old tanker, he had a little old tanker, you know, short thing. He comes down there and he starts, and we rode down there, and man, there's deer laying everywhere. That buck I shot, he was dead door and all dead laying there. And I I mean, I never even made it to the buck till then. Yeah, and I had the fireman there with me, and he's like, Boy, what'd you do? I was like, Man, I was just shooting at this one buck right here. I wasn't I didn't have nothing to do with all these eight does laying here. I am eight does eight does and that 13 point. Come on. Yeah, golly. Well, I'll be dang, I see a little light coming as the sheriff's department. He's coming. Oh. And he comes down there and he's seeing all the deer, and he's like, What is going on? Well, the guy's putting out the fire, he's got other guys coming by then. There, they got a truck in there. Well, next thing you know, the sheriff, he's on the he's on the radio. I don't know what he's doing. And about 10 minutes later, I see a blue light coming. It's a game warden. I'm like, oh man, what am I gonna do? I was like, I I don't I'm scared to death. And I'm like, man, I just got into hunting in Georgia. You know, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You made a bad name for yourself.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, first thing. I I burned up the burned the man's woods down. I sh uh I take an over limit on deer. I mean, I you know, I mean, I don't know what that's gonna happen. And the game warner comes up and he goes, Where you from, boy? And I say, um, Panama City. And when the gang warner rolls his eyes when you tell him you're from Panama City, yeah, you know that you're probably gonna be in trouble. He goes, Well, what did you do? I said, uh, you you got one of them TikTok shows? And I'm like, What? Tick TikTok videos I thought, what you doing with the tannerite? And I'm like, No, no, no, no, no, no, no, tannerite. I didn't do that. You because back then, yeah, um, you know, about 10 years ago, they had videos going around with tannerite, blowing up hogs, and all well, he thought that's what I was doing with the deer. Oh, yeah, yeah. And so they, next thing you know, I got more gay warrants pulling up. You know, they don't just come in once when it's a major violation. He said, Well, what are all these deer? I said, I told him what happened. He goes, Sure, sure. Yeah, yeah, I got you. And when he started doing that, I was like, Oh man, I'm going to jail. I'm going to jail. Yeah. So the game warrants got together, they started doing some tests, and uh they said, Well, Mr. Beavers, you're over the limit on deer. You cannot shoot this many deer in one day.
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_03So we think you're using tenorite. Yeah, we think you're using tenor rights. So we're gonna confiscate all you deer. And I'm like, not my buck. They said, yes, we're taking your buck. You want to go to jail? I was like, no, you're not. Uh you want to go to jail? And I'm like, take my buck.
SPEAKER_01They took the buck and the eight and the sick.
SPEAKER_03They took nine, eight dose. Eight those and nine deer total. Nine deer total. And uh they loaded them all in the truck and they conducted a big investigation. And I just had found out, like, after the hunt season was over, that they got me a uh they gave me a ticket for careless hunting. Oh, really? Caroless hunting. I've I've never heard I've heard of careless driving, but this is they said I should have known and and researched around and knew that gas drone was there, even though I didn't know what's there.
SPEAKER_01Still didn't get your deer back.
SPEAKER_03I didn't get my deer back. Probably shot a Georgia State record. He was big as a bunch of people.
SPEAKER_01They probably got him on the wall at the game.
SPEAKER_03They probably ate all the deer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you know. No, they were cooked already. Oh, yeah, that was a little bit more.
SPEAKER_03They didn't have to take the hide off on purpose. It was like sand off, no doubt. But I mean to me it was, I'm sure, good, you know. But anyway, I started off on a rough note in Blake and are you kin with them now or are you back? Well, it took a while. It took a while. I got into another hunting club.
SPEAKER_01So you can't carry no barbecue back to that man.
SPEAKER_03He's not he he he don't want to talk to me anymore for the TC. He don't want to talk to me anymore. But I had an opportunity to get in a big hunting club, and I finally got my name on the list, and it took me about four years, and it was a ritzy. I mean, they were strict, 150 inches or better, and you don't shoot nothing less than 150 inches, and then they're serious. I mean, so I said, Yeah, I'll pay the money, I'll try it one year. So I got in there and I'm hunting with bow season, and I had a picture of a giant coming in. But I'm sitting there and I'm in a lighter stand, and I got a little cleared out spot in the cypress pond, and it's a dry cypress pond. And um, I got a one of them big old barrels, uh 55-gallon barrel, and I got holes cut in the bottom, so I can fill it up with about 500 pounds of corn. You know I ain't gonna feed them all the time, and they just gravity feed out of the bottom. Yeah. And I haven't been there in a while, and it's sort of getting low, but uh when I got there that day, I didn't want to take a chance on putting my scent around, so I went ahead and hunted. And I'm sitting there hunting, and nothing, squirrel, birds, all eating around the feeder, and then all of a sudden I see a rattlesnake crawling, and he's coming, and I'm like, heck. I mean, this is a big timber rattler. And he crawls, and I'm like, what is this snake doing? And he crawls up the the corn was getting about in he crawls up in the barrel. Come on. And he's he's done this before, okay. Yeah, I'm sitting there watching him, and man, all of a sudden, a squirrel, he'll you know that squirrel or they'll get up there and they'll start getting right by that hole. That snake he hit him, boy. Boom! I'm like, you gotta be kidding me. And he hit that snake and dragged him up in the barrel. You could see the barrel, like you know, how they coil up on it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03He coiled up on it, and I'm like, it's one smart snake. Yeah, and then all of a sudden a dang bird was chipping around there. It was a little uh quail, or I think it was a dove, a little morning dove around that hole, pow, feathers everywhere. Come on, he don't got any little morning dove. And I'm like, this is incredible. I didn't have nothing. I didn't back back then I didn't really have a good camera on my phone. Yeah, it was a flip phone, yeah. They didn't have any good cameras, yeah. So I didn't video none of it, but you just have to take my word for it because I ain't lying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03All right, but I don't sit in there, the thing about it is I I I felt terrible. I had an eight-point, he was a young eight-point, and I'm like, he comes for the feeder, it's getting about dark. I'm like, what's going on? That snake is still in there. That buck goes up there to that hole, and I'm telling you what, that snake popped him right under the eye. I mean, I seen his head come out the van right in his head, and the butt jumps straight up and run out there and stopped for a little bit. And I'm like, that's the craziest thing I've ever seen. And I mean I'm like, all of a sudden the deer is I'm watching him and he's wobbling, and next thing you know, he just sort of lays down, and next thing you know, his head hits dirt. He's dead. And I'm like, oh my gosh, he just killed a big thing. Kill a bug, kill one of your bucks. So I'm not gonna leave a deer, especially in my area. So I loaded him in my truck. Well, I get down on the road, I was gonna go take him off the property and you know, cut his horns off and you know, dump him, whatever, because I don't think you could eat a snake that's been poisoned, you know. Yeah. I'm on the road, and who do I run into? It's a lease president. And he's running, hey, what's going on, Randy? I'm like, uh, um, nothing. Uh I didn't know what to say. I said, I I got a I got you get it, you get anything? I said, Well, I got a buck in my truck, but I I didn't kill him. You know, he said, what do you mean you didn't kill him? How close was he?
SPEAKER_01Was he 110, 88? What was he? You reckon?
SPEAKER_03What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01It's supposed to be 150, and I think it's supposed to be 150.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this is like 101. This is like 101, maybe. He may have broke 100. I mean, he is like he was like 13 inches wide. I'm like, he the president of Lee's looks and he looks over the back of my truck and he just jumped and he's like, You get out of here right now. Uh, you know the rules here. You get out of my he was a hothead and he kicked me out of the lease. Well, I couldn't even explain what was going on. He said, get your deer and get off the scene. Give me your give me your kit lease key. He wouldn't take any, he wouldn't even hear, he wasn't even up for discussion. Come on. So I was over to you then.
SPEAKER_01You've had a hard time.
SPEAKER_03I've had a hard time in Blakely, Georgia. But every year we have uh a deep sea fishing trip at the ribshack, and um I'm very fortunate to be able to take uh my crew um here at the rib shack, and we go with my cousin, he's my first cousin, it's my um my mama, her brother, it's his son, and uh his name is Captain Mike, Mike Sullivan. I mean, he's a famous captain around, yeah. Yeah, and he used to be the deck hand for Mark Kelly. Oh, really? Back in the day. Yeah, that's how he got in, you know, got going. But anyway, uh we go fishing with Captain Mike out every year, and I have an interesting story, and I mean it's a true story. It happened uh two years ago. We were out fishing, and Captain Mike.
SPEAKER_01Captain Mike Mike, y'all just remember Captain Mike.
SPEAKER_03Out of Captain Anderson's Marina. He is he is a fisherman, yeah. Anyway, um, we went out in the morning uh for our Rich Ack fishing trip, and we leave about 5 30 in the morning, and uh that day it was thunderstorming and lightning and terrible when we got on the boat. And I'm like, Cousin? I said, We're gonna be all right out there. He goes, Oh yeah, oh yeah, I got a big boat. I'm like, okay. So, you know, I mean, I you know, I've seen big lightning bolts. I'm scared to death go in the ocean, you know. And so is everybody else. So we get out there, he goes, Oh, it'll clear up in a little while. I'm like, okay. So we went through the pass. I'm like, good gracious, it was like a perfect storm, man. And pass, you know, I ain't never seen and my oh my oh my cat mic, he's just uh cruise go got his foot propped up, oh this ain't nothing, that ain't nothing, you know. You know, he he's reassuring that we're gonna be fine. He's good at that, you know. Yeah, so we get on out there, we rode about two, three hours, we get about 50 miles out, and then it sort of calmed down. I was surprised, you know, but we had storms in the area, and his radar was going around. And first spot, we just absolutely hooked up on Snapper. I mean, we were just loading a boat, loading a boat, loading a boat. So you know how captains are, they'll let you catch so many on spot, and then oh, beam, being they hit that bell, and you're like, no, man, we just catch. No, we gotta go, we gotta go. Anyway, I know how they all do. Mark Kelly's. Yeah, they you can't. Yeah, they're gonna be. Yeah, that's her living. Yeah, and I under I get it. You know, I get it. Yeah, even though I am a cousin, his favorite cousin, but anyway, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I don't think I'm Mark's favorite cousin.
SPEAKER_03So anyway, we we we troll them on to another spot, you know, and uh I kind of look into the distance, and this is a big black storm. And I'm like, I go in the cabin, I'm like, Cousin. I said, we're gonna be all right. That storm looks like it's coming for us. He goes, see that red, all that red right there? It that's it, it's coming right for us. And I'm like, great. Oh, what are we gonna do? He said, we're just gonna sit tight and it'll pass. And I'm like, okay, you got lightning rods on the trailer, I can say a joke, you know. And he goes, Oh, it'd be fine. I'm like, he was real assured, real reassured. So we're truly on, we get to the spot, and he goes, ding, ding, ding, everybody down. So we're all down, and that's norm, and the wind starts blowing, the waves are picking up, it's getting on it. So I mean, it's popping lightning, and I'm like, good gracious, are we gonna be able to, you know, fish this thing? So we're catching a few fish, you know, and all of a sudden the rain starts. And then we got this one guy on the boat. He's not a ribshack guy, okay, but he he helped me uh wire the the restaurant after the hurricane. He lost his restaurant. And he was my electrician, and we met that way. He's Brian Taylor.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03He was a dang Georgia boy football fan of Georgia. I'm a He's full bulldog. He is Georgia Bulldog. Georgia doll. I mean he's a doll, you know. But he's an electrician. You know how them electricians are. They're you know, you know electrician. You when you see electrician, you know electrician. And that's Brian. He's got a big old beard, you know, and you know, he's a heck of electrician, though. He can wire anything. He's really good on that part. But I got some girls that fish, some of my waitresses, they were on the boat, and he gets around the cabin. This is before we went out, and the storm's approaching, and he goes, You know, if boat ain't got no ground, lightning hits, you are the ground. And I'm like, Right. I was like, I pull into the side and said, Look, when you're out hunting, you don't talk about rattlesnakes because you might gonna force yourself to get stepped on a rattlesnake until you don't mention snakes. Well on the boat, you don't mention lightning, right? I mean, don't that make sense to you? Yeah, yeah. Then all of a sudden, boom boom, lightning hits. He goes, Yep, you see what I told you? Man, this getting close. Y'all better stay inside. Don't be outside, don't hold no fishing bullet. I'm like, he's scaring the girls, they're scared to death. And Mike's like, Y'all can go ahead and go try to get down on, you know, put it put it down on this spot. We're right here on the spot. And uh, so we all go out there. And man, this started. I got Brian was right here, I'm right here, and then we got the girls along the back right there, you know, and some other guys on the other side. And all of a sudden, man, I I let my down, and as soon as it hit the bottom, he like snatched a pole out of my hand. Boom! Big old knife snapper, and I'm pulling him up, I'm pulling him up, and all of a sudden it's starting to rain. And man, that storm, I mean, it's popping lightning to everywhere. I'm scared to death, I ain't gonna lie. And I look over at Brian, and he's just a grinning, you know, he's grinning, and I'm trying to pull that snapper up. And all of a sudden, the girls behind me they start screaming, shark, shark, there's a big shark. And I'm like, shark, and I'm pulling, I'm trying to I'm like, gosh, he's gonna eat my snapper. That's all I can think of. I'm trying to get him on the boat, you get him going on the boat, and then all of a sudden, I look over and I see the uh transponder on the fin. It's a dego great white. Come on, so it's coming right by the boat, and I got my snapper, I can see color, and so all I see is a transponder and the shark go down, and I'm like pulling that fish up, and all of a sudden, I mean, he grabbed that snapper, that great white, grabbed that snapper, and I'm gonna tell you what, I thought it was gonna break the pole in half. I just put it on the ledge, and then about that time a bolt of lightning hit so close to the boat that I saw a streak come between me and Brian of the uh of the bolt of lightning. And as soon as it hit, my my pole, my my line melted. And I look over at Brian and his beard, he's got one of them old beards. Yeah, his beard was singing, it had smoke coming off his beard. And I said, Dude, did you get struck? And I'm I'm patting his beard. I said, Your beard's on fire, man. And he's like, What? He said, I I think I might have got it. He he couldn't talk, he was so shocked. But what I did, what happened was we look out, and that all the girls start screaming, look, and we look out there. That great flight white shark is on his belly, floating. He's on his belly. He what happened? That bowl of lighting went down and hit his transponder.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_03And melted my line.
SPEAKER_02Struck him, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Struck him, struck him, melted the line, almost hit my buddy, and I'll tell you what, I mean, I it's illegal to eat great white shark. So we just left him be. I said, Mike, can we eat him? He goes, No, we can't touch that shark. He's protected.
SPEAKER_01Now, did y'all go get your snapper out of his mouth?
SPEAKER_03No, no, we did not get a snapper from his mouth. No, that's crazy. About that time, that shark flipped itself around. It just stunned him. I mean, I guess he was deep enough to. Exactly. That's exactly what happened. That's exactly what happened. But anyway, when you don't count as Mike Bo and he tells you the lightning is no big deal, don't believe that. Don't believe lightning is a real deal out there. I mean, hey.
SPEAKER_01Randy Beavis has caught a great white shark.
SPEAKER_03I have hooked a great white shark. I have. I can say that.
SPEAKER_01I'll be honest with you, Randy Beavis has shot a great. I mean, it's like you're like any of you people that shot catfish for a living. Yeah, yeah. This man right here has shot the biggest. I mean, him and the good lord. Yep.
SPEAKER_03And that's a true story. I mean, I ain't I'm not lying.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I ain't even lying. Yeah, that's good. So, so you know, he was he was talking about man, that's good stuff. Uh you was talking about Georgia and how you uh now uh let's let's track back to when we were younger. Now me and him was in high school so he decides he's gonna carry us up cocoon hunting at his uncle's at my uncle. This is the first this is the first bad luck we had in Georgia. It is you had because it was. Yeah, this was the first bad luck. It was yeah, yeah. So so we're on our way up there, and I guess you were driving.
SPEAKER_03I was driving.
SPEAKER_01Okay, and this young gal pulls us over.
SPEAKER_03The speed limit was 35 miles an hour. We were doing like 42, and this is Dawsonville, Georgia. This is a small town, you blink, you're through it. And we're not on a sports car, we're just on a truck with a doll box. Yeah, we're on a little truck with a doll box. Anyway, go ahead. Anyway, I pull over and this young woman cop comes up and hey, how y'all doing? I see you're from Florida. There again. You're from Florida. We you know, we in Georgia now, but we you you go Florida tag. And uh she goes, Can I see your driver's license? And I said, Sure. Here's my driver's license. Yeah, yeah, sure. Sure.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03And I was being real nice. And I said, ma'am, I said, what were we doing? Oh, you know the speed limit's 35. You were doing 42. And I'm like, oh ma'am. I said, I'm sorry. So what are y'all doing? I said, we're going coon hunting. You know how the police are. They well, who you going hunting with? And I was like, Well, I'm going with my uncle, Woodrow White. Woodrow White? Oh, that's my neighbor. And I'm like, Oh man, yes, we get out of this.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03And uh, yeah, I live the farm right down from Woodrow's house. I'm like, oh, really? And I said, that's my uncle. And so we're going hunting and uh we're coon hunting. Okay, well, I'll be right back with you. She comes back and has me a speeding ticket.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I'm like, well, what is I don't think she likes Uncle Woodrow. I told her, I don't think she likes my Uncle Woodrow. Oh yeah, uh, she must not, or she wouldn't have given us a ticket.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's the truth.
SPEAKER_03So anyway, we hit it, and I go pull up Uncle Woodrow's house, and uh, you know, he's like, oh boy, he goes, Oh boy, he had a oh, he had a bad day. He was a farmer overall, he's a true in a dictionary, southern Florida. Great guy. He goes, he talked real fast, he didn't have many teeth, but uh he says, uh, how was your trip? And I said, Well, it was good till I ran into your neighbor going through town at 42 miles an hour. He goes, What? And I was like, Yeah, she wrote me a ticket. Little Huddy, yeah. Or something like that. And uh he said, Oh, she's always been a pain in my butt. And I'm like, Oh gosh, you weren't very nice to her, though, Uncle Lindrow. She wrote me a ticket. She's like, Oh, don't worry about it, it ain't gonna be that much. I'll pay for the ticket. He even offered to pay, you know. So, you know, that was cool. So we go to hunting that night, and so your boys ready to go. So, yeah, yeah, we ready to go. So, me and old Scott, we get out there, and my Uncle Roe, we we fired him dogs off, and they struck a coon right away. And man, the race was on. And my uncle Woodrow, you know, he don't know, he didn't never really get to have you know the his later years have a dog, you know, the coon up, but he loved the coon up. And boy, he he you could just see it. He was eating it up, he was eating it up, he he loved it. And boy, you know, Scott's dog babe, when she trees, man, you could tell she's looking up and it's just a solid chop. I mean, just chop chop chop. He goes, Oh, she's true, she's true, let's go. And I mean, my uncle Woodrow, I'm telling you what, he could he walk through the woods. Yeah, he's like 70, 70 to 80 years old. He walked through the woods faster than he could. Yeah, he was like a he's like a rabbit through the uh briars, and and he got in there to that tree, and man, we shot that coon. His eye just lit up, and man, and the dogs fought the coon, and that was just the best thing that could ever happen that night. And we we had two or three really good runs, and after we killed about the third coon, we come out and we see some trucks come across this field, and this is his property. Yeah, this is his property. We see old timer, yeah. Two trucks coming across the field, and he goes, I wonder who that is. And I'm like, hmm, I wonder. And as they got closer, it was the game warden. Yes, yep, two of them. Yeah, it's always bad when you get two. I'm telling you, man, it's had to be twice. I know it's bad news when you get two games, and you from Florida. It's bad news. Yeah. So the game warden pulls up, said, Oh, what are you boys doing? And my Uncle Woodrow, he's a he was a fiery man. He said, No, the question is, what are you doing? What are you doing on my property? And he says, Well, we got a report of some boys hunting over here that may not have a hunting license.
SPEAKER_01Come on. Yeah, that's a true story. True story.
SPEAKER_03You better have a hunt. He goes, these boys are hunting coons on my property. They don't need a hunting license. Oh, yes, they do. Mr. White, yes, they do.
SPEAKER_01And one of the things he said, he after it was over with, he said, I ain't seen no game warrants around here. He ain't even seen none.
SPEAKER_03No, never seen a game warden. Yeah. But see, later on when come to find out, his little neighbor, little sweet, little uh speeding ticket, sweet little female cup, she called the game wardens on us too. Oh, and wrote us a ticket and called a game warden.
SPEAKER_01And we got a ticket from the game. What?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We yeah. But in the end, this is okay. Hold on. Let me get going with it. All right. So the game warden said, Well, Mr. White, they have killed game in Georgia. Oh, you looked at the Coombs, and they are hunting and they are getting a ticket. He goes, No, sir, you are not riding these boys a ticket. And I'm I can't use the language he used on this podcast, but it was it was a curse word out of every other word out of his mouth to the game boards, and he was right in their face. He wasn't like doing it from a distance. He was in their face, this wiry little fight. Have you never seen anybody talk to a game board? No, never.
SPEAKER_01And fearful at all.
SPEAKER_03He was not fearful one bit. And the guys, then Game War said, Well, Mr. White, uh, we have to write them a ticket. He said, You go ahead and write them, but they ain't gonna pay them. And I'm like, just write us a ticket. So he wrote, they wrote me and Scott out a ticket that night and uh hunting without a license in Georgia. He took them tickets, he tore them in half right in front of Game Warden. I'm like, oh God, Uncle Woodrow, we gonna go to jail. We going to jail. He goes, You boys ain't going to jail, they ain't gonna do nothing. I'm like, he's telling two grown game wardens this, and I'm like, he goes, I know the judge. I ate breakfast with him every Thursday morning, and them boys ain't paying them tickets. He goes, whatever. If they don't pay on, there'll be a warrant for their arrest. Okay, we're leaving. So they wanted to get out of there, they didn't want no more of him. So Uncle Woodrow, I said, uh, I think me and Scott said after the hunt, before we had a bag, he said, Do we have to worry about this ticket? He said, No, boys, you don't don't want me to worry about it. Act like it didn't even happen. And I'm like, we're gonna get arrested in Florida. They're gonna come looking for us. And uh anyway, my Uncle Woodrow told me, I I called him about a week later. I said, Hey, did you have to talk to the judge? He goes, Oh, I ain't breakfast with him Thursday. He said, You boys, just don't even worry about it. He'll take right good care of it. But we know we got all that.
SPEAKER_00Y'all might still have warrants and enjoy.
SPEAKER_01This is before Randy went through all this uh blowing deer up, all that kind of stuff. So it wouldn't it would have came back.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, it'll came back.
SPEAKER_01Uncle Woodrow got our got our record expunged back then.
SPEAKER_03Rest in peace, Uncle Woodrow. Love you.
SPEAKER_01I'm serious. That's that really happened back then.
SPEAKER_03That's crazy. That's a true story.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy.
SPEAKER_03Hey, one thing me and Scott, we would never do is a lie. I mean, of course.
SPEAKER_01We hey You gotta push the envelope, too.
SPEAKER_03You gotta push the envelope. I agree. Pump property lines, yeah. I don't know about that anymore. I try to stay away from property lines. Uh they can create havoc.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, would you say I mean, yeah. Property lines are not good for anybody watching a podcast. Don't hunt property lines. Yeah, well, so you'll be tempted. Well, back up about five, about ten years ago, I had a place in Wausall to hunt. And uh man, I tell you what, you know, have you ever are you good at hypnosis? So have you have you ever studied that a little bit?
SPEAKER_01No, but I did see. Remember that guy that used to be on the beach and used to make people do all kinds of stuff? Yes. Okay, yeah. What was this? Mike Harvey? Yeah, Mike Harvey, man.
SPEAKER_03I've been like, yeah, I for real. I have I'm gonna tell you right now, I got kicked out of a show at the treasure ship one night. They kicked me out. What? I was trying to talk a little bit while he was talking, and he singled me out out of like 200 people. He said, You talking right there, you're out of here. I'm like, huh?
SPEAKER_01Was there a baby?
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, two of them. It's two game boards and two bouncers. It takes two to get rid of it. I know, but anyway, my guy, but anyway, this is a hot story. It has to do with because I learned a lot from from you know my car? Yeah, yeah. That's all we had, you know. You didn't have a whole lot of stuff. Yeah, had none of this stuff. But anyway, I was deer hunting one night one day in uh in Wausau, and uh I was have you ever had a deer come in when you want to get down out of the stand? I mean, how many times does that happen? Okay, yeah. Well, all right, I was hunting at Wausau one day and it was cold, and man, I I man, I just like my muscles got all stove up, and it was bow season, and you know, it's just a good cold front that day. And I was like, man, I I gotta get out. It's about 10 o'clock in the morning. I was like, I'm done with this. I ain't seen nothing. So I got my bow and tied it up, and I started lowering my bow down, and sure enough, as soon as I got it to the ground, I look back behind the tree and I see a giant eight-point coming right from my tree, and I'm like, holy crap! And I mean he's on a steady walk and he's already 15 yards and close, and I'm like, oh geez, he's walking right to my tree, and I got my bow. I threw out the string in my hand, and I'm like, dang! And he stops and he's looking at my bow, and I'm like, well, he's looking at it, he ain't running from it. So I just started swinging it back and forth, and I'm like, and uh his whole head, I could watch his head, and his head was going back and forth and back and forth. I'm like, oh shoot. I got it a little further and I'm swinging it, I'm swinging it, and next thing you know, his front legs just locked. They just they just come to lock. I don't, I've never seen a deer that and he was, I'm like, that joker's hidden size. I pull out my butt knife and I sort of climbing down the ladder, and he ain't running. He's standing there still. And I'm like, I don't know if this is even legal, but I stabbed him in the neck. I mean, I stabbed him in the neck, and the sucker went crazy. And he took off running, and I had him by the horn and had one knife in him, and he dragged me about 40 yards, and then finally he bled out. But I'm gonna tell you what, that is the craziest deer kill that I think I've ever done.
SPEAKER_01You know, you could teach classes on that.
SPEAKER_03If a deer ever comes, even with a rifle, even with a rifle, you can swing lower it down, you can swing that rifle. And as long you watch his head, and if it he is perceptive to it, if his head is moving back and forth at your right, you'll know he won't he's he's catching on to it. But uh anyway, that was.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure in Georgia they after you on this kind of deal. You gotta be careful doing it up, George. Oh yeah. And two game boards are gonna be after you for sure. I love it. I love it.
SPEAKER_03Well, come on, keep on. Okay. Um now, hey, you know my cousin CJ. Uh, you know, he he he's not really, I call him cousin. He's he's like a third cousin, but he's a smart, he's a he is a smart guy. He was an engineer for I can't say what branch of the armed forces, but he was an engineer on weaponry. Okay, he was smart, he developed all kinds of smart stuff for for, but he just retired about five years ago. Yeah. Well, I go over to a shop the other day, and we're just you know talking around, and you know, I told him, I said, uh, you know, I'm getting old, and I said, you know, I'm getting shaky when I shoot my crop my my compound bow. And uh I I shoot my crossbow a lot, but I want to go back to my my compound bow, but I'm I I just can't pinpoint and and I I think I'm gonna wound a lot of deer. He goes, Well, I've been working on something, let me show you. He had this drawing, and he said, What I've done here is I've taken a broadhead and I have re-engineered it. And don't tell anybody this, but this is a heat sinking broadhead. Come on. Yeah, he he is he is he he has got the technology building his broadhead to sink heat. And he said, We need to go test it. And I said, Well, let's go to my farm in Georgia. I got uh I got hogs all over the place. We'll do it with hogs, you know. And so we got one on my compound bow. I got an old switchback, uh, Matthew's old switchback, you know. I ain't got nothing high-tech bowl, it's just an old switchback. And I got there, put one of them broadheads on. We're in there, and uh I said, Well, how far do I need uh how far do I need to be within the deer or the hog to to make a hit? How far? He goes, at least a hundred yards. I mean, it should work at a hundred yards away. I'm like, a hundred yards? How far do I need to be within the hog? He said, just aim if you get it within 20 yards of it, it will do its, it will, it will, it will do its trick. I'm like, you're kidding me? So we had a whole group of hogs come out about 80 yards, and I'm like, I'm gonna let one fly. We tested it out. I drew back, shot, and I've never seen anything like it. That arrow was just it was just tricking all over the place. Drill that hog right in the right in the heart at 80 yards. Come on. And I'm like, that's incredible. So they ran off. Well, we went another night, and he had a broad head, and uh, they were about 120 yards, and he said, let let it fly. You'll you'll you'll see. Hogs come out there, I let it fly. Arrow went down and it went all the way in the dirt, like 50 yards away. And then he's like, God, what happened? We go out there, there's a dang rabbit there. And he goes, Well, I ain't worked out all the buds yet, but it picks up the first heat. We got a rabbit that night and had 50 yards, okay. I didn't even see the rabbit, I didn't know the rabbit was there, but yeah. So anyway, um, we go another time and go on testing, and we was about 140 yards. I ranged some number range farming. I said, They're 140 yards. He goes, let one fly. I'm like, Are you kidding me? I let one fly. That arrow took off, and I mean, it is just it looked like a uh guided missile. I mean, right for the hog, boom, heart shot him 140 yards. I'm like, this is incredible. Yeah, but now the only thing is now he is thinking about putting these out on the market, CJ's, uh but hey, let me tell you, we got to make sure with the game warrant because we don't want no trouble with no game warnings that this would be legal, yeah, because it it could not be legal, it's a possibility. Well, I mean, uh especially on deer. Now, hog is you know, you can shoot them year-round pretty much anyway, spin them, stick them with a knife, which that one above my head was killed with the pocket knife. I mean, remember with the corn on the stomach and oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so yeah, Randy was laying in, and I had leaves over top of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it had leaves over top with McDonald's straw, the goggles, and all that. I mean, you can kill a hog anyway, but these heat-seeking broadheads, they're gonna be available. He's thinking if everything goes right with the game commission and everything for hog only, for you archers that ain't scared to shoot, uh, they're a hundred bucks a piece is what he's gonna try to get them down to. Yeah, you know, $100 a piece.
SPEAKER_00That's not bad. That's a deal. That's a good deal. That's not a good deal. Beast broadheads, I mean, they're expensive. You ever seen them beast broadheads? Yeah, y'all just be looking for CJ.
SPEAKER_01And in fact, we probably gonna do a GoFundMe page and we're gonna put it in Randy's name. Y'all send a bunch of money, and then you could be the first one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01$100 a lick. Yeah, probably it's six pack for $500.
SPEAKER_03I think that's what it was. Six pack for $500.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So that one got really good.
SPEAKER_03DJ's heat sinkers. Yeah. You'd be looking for them, and they're they they think heat, but you could kill a rabbit. I mean, that's one thing about it. You can go kill a rabbit, or you don't want to have friends hunting around you. Now, hey, you gotta make sure everybody stays back behind you because it can sink you out. Nothing like water running up your eye. Nothing like one be running.
SPEAKER_00My goodness. Well boy, well, we got a great time. And we're gonna have to do this again because I'm sure we can be here all night long doing this. I've loved it. I loved it. Man, it's been good. Thank you for having me on 100% by the colours.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, ripjack.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, y'all come on to the JR's ripjack Calloway.
SPEAKER_01Randy's in here. Uh, you you know, there's no telling. You just gotta come on in here to get some ribs.
SPEAKER_00You know what you need to do? You need to actually take this part of the of the of the restaurant to make a stage. Instead of doing live music, just live storytelling. Live storytelling.
SPEAKER_03We tell stories around a ripjack pretty much every day. Okay, hey, that's it. Let's see, there's uh sign of there. Welcome hunters, fishermen, and other good liars.
SPEAKER_01But uh, I mean we're liars though. We're telling some people gotta keep up with us.
SPEAKER_03That's true, that's true. Some people might have to tell lies to have stories like this because they don't hunt football.
SPEAKER_01That's right. That's right. You gotta think outside the box.
SPEAKER_00You gotta get things outside the box. Get out there, get the experience, get the stories. That's like we got the boots on the ground. So, hey, listen, we're glad you came by.
