The Addiction Nobody Talks About - We're All Chasing Validation - Quick Pumps
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Likes. Views. Approval. We're all chasing it. Nobody wants to admit it. Today we do.
In this episode of Quick Pumps, Vic and Matt go deep on the addiction that nobody in fitness — or life — wants to talk about. Validation. It shows up in why you post, why you train, why you dress the way you do, and even why you chose your career. And social media didn't create it… it just gave it an unlimited supply.
This one's personal. And if you're honest with yourself, it'll hit.
In this episode: ✅ Agree or Disagree — the most uncomfortable takes on approval and social media ✅ Hot takes on the fitness industry, going viral, and performing confidence ✅ This or That — 10k followers vs. 10 people who actually respect you ✅ Would You Rather — do great work nobody sees or average work everyone praises? ✅ Overrated or Underrated — follower counts, building in silence, posting your wins ✅ The question that stopped us both: are we doing this podcast for the right reasons?
💬 Be honest — what's something you've done purely for how it would look to other people? Drop it in the comments. 👇

Nice way. Alright, buddy.
SPEAKER_02Are we actually gonna w lift things? Looks like it's a box talk today. We're not lifting things again. I mean, that'd easy. What do you want to do? The last few have been not lifting. In between sets without the sets. It's literally between sets. Like we're we're not working out. Like, so it's so the the name still makes sense. Um, I mean, we could just rip some like casual abs or something. All right, today we're gonna talk about um the addiction that nobody's talking about. Okay. Validation. Seeking validation from others. Facts. Facts. This is a good one. This is a good one. Um, yeah, so kind of talking about like, you know, again, we talk about a lot about social media. Um yeah, just like social media and how it creates the need for validation and it gives you, you know, an unlimited supply of that. And I think everyone's kind of addicted to it in a sense. Addicted to getting validation? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I 100%. Because it cut it's kind of like that uh we talked about it over previous episodes, but it's like that uh super quick dopamine hit of like, you know, you post something and then you're like you're like, oh my god, who's what about it? Reporting people think yeah, you hear the comments. You like you like check your phone every 10 minutes to see if you got more like you go back on the app even more? Yeah, as if it was designed to do so to be like that plays with your mind. Yeah, so like you know, everyone talks about other addictions, more common ones like alcohol and drugs and big booties and stuff like that. I couldn't even flinch when I said that. Um even like gym addiction, but that's a I guess that I would consider that a good addiction to have in some capacity. Um, but no one really talks about how addicted we are to that external validation. Um yeah, so I think we'll run it kind of like how we usually do these quick ones. We'll maybe just run some abs in between. I think both of us are kind of like low energy today. All right, hit me with it. Um all right, so segment number one, we're gonna go some agrees, agree or disagrees, um gut instinct only. So we just gotta rip it. We're pretty bad at these because we always end up talking for like 20 minutes per point. Um, okay, so let's go. We got about like 10 to 12 points here. So I'll do a couple, then you do a couple, maybe you do some abs, and then I'll talk and then we'll like we'll advise.
SPEAKER_01We don't have to do all of them either. There's a bunch of content there that you've come up with.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so that you've come up with. Most people on social media, most people are on social media for validation, not connection. Agree or disagree? Probably. I really wish I would disagree. Yeah, yeah. But it's gotta be agreeing majority, are on there for validation. Think of all the like OnlyFans people, yeah. Think of all the people that are on there just like my spicy link. Yeah, you want to get some spicy link. And it's always like how do you know that? I just through hearing it from other people. Just like just from friends like Steve Rosser, okay? Oh man. Next. Um, okay, the gym selfie is almost exclusively about external approval. You know, those like I've never done them, but you know, those like that's how we that's how I got most of my following shirtless pictures. Yeah, when you were competing, right? Back in the comp comp competition. Yeah, same. That's probably when I built like the initial base of people I had was just just like shirtless sharing your pumped self. Have you ever like scrolled? I don't know if you clean up your Instagram. I don't. I'm trying to arc I've archived a lot. I've done a couple, yeah. Because sometimes I'll look at stuff from like 2015, 16. I'm like, oh man, I gotta delete this stuff. Like it's so cringy. Yeah. Um, but if you look at like even my Instagram for the first couple years, it's like 97% shirtless photos. Like, no, no, what's the word I'm looking for? No substance. But you know, the thing is back then you were having fun doing it. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and then I'd sit there and be like, oh my god, six likes. Like, you know what I mean? Like getting excited about it. That's the thing, the validation thing. The addition started young. I think, yeah, uh definitely agree. Um, chasing likes is no different than chasing any other dopamine kind of hit, I guess. Oh. Yeah. Could be even worse than drugs. I think it's worse because it's at least with well, not that I've ever done. Yeah, and it's like I'm talking about magnesium. And magnesium. And it's uh it's free. That's the thing. Right? It's like you're getting that dopamine at no monetary cost to you. Like I'm sure it's like these big companies don't even give a shit about the monetary cost. They give about the cost of your soul. Your soul, exactly. Because like at least at least with drugs, there's a ceiling at some point where you're like, okay, I'm probably not gonna buy anymore because I've spent X amount of money. Or if I do anymore, I'll die. You know what I mean? Like just yeah, like assuming that you just feel terrible. Yeah, exactly. But with this, there's no, it's like almost like a reset. You'll look at your phone and like you see a couple likes, you get excited, and then five minutes later, you like, it's like that dopamine's like ready for another hit. Yeah, you're like, oh, it's been 10 minutes, I got two more likes.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Ooh. This one I feel like is huge for the ladies. Oh, but it's pretty, pretty genderless. Pretty non-binary. Yeah, not oh, well said. Okay, we're gonna get a bunch of new followers now. That's crazy. Most people dress for other people, not themselves. You're always dressing in a way that like you enjoy how you dress, but like you kind of care what other people are. Yeah, I think that kind of applies to everybody. Like, I think there's like a few rare people that I've met that like an eccentric. They're eccentric, they like wear like flip-flops and like a tuxedo or something. You know what I mean? Like, what are you doing? And they're like, This is this is how I like to dress, but I think like put yourself like even in like a professional setting, if you're going to work, you you dress to look good, but you dress to like represent the business or yeah look presentable yourself. Yeah. So I think no matter what, you're you know, doing it for other people to some extent for sure.
SPEAKER_01How about this one? People who say they don't care what others think usually care the most because they're announcing that they don't care.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like that uh like it's like that like guy who I've even said that. It's like the guy who's keep saying how strong he is to make people believe he's strong kind of thing. Or like or like I'm not afraid of that. I'm not afraid of that. Or yeah, or someone who's like wanting that they're very wealthy is probably not very wealthy. Like I think it all lines up in that same vein. Yeah. I would agree with that for sure. Social media has turned ordinary insecurity into a public performance.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. What an interesting way to word that.
SPEAKER_02So like your interpretation are you just asked me that when you don't know how to interpret it. Yeah, and also makes me sound smart. Interesting. How would you interpret this? How do you go about dissecting this conundrum? So I kind of read it as um wait. So you're ordinarily you have insecurities, right, but they're kind of emphasized or exacerbated exasperate, a good word, um, into the public eye. Uh because of social media. For example, going back to what we just said, like if you if you say that you don't care what people think, odds are you actually care a lot what people think. It's like the same idea, like your insecurities kind of shine out a little bit more based on your activity online. You know what's funny? That reminds me of I don't know if you've seen those memes where it's like middle-aged divorced white men on Facebook be like, if you aren't with me from the beginning, you won't be with me in the end. Like those like random quotes, like, you don't want to uncage the lion because I'll tear you apart. Like just random shit like that. Exactly that type of stuff. People are posting shit that they think they seem like yes, big and whatnot, if you but in reality, they're really showing what's wrong with them. Yes, like it's a a mirror of their own insecurities. Yeah, those are so funny, dude. The compilations of those where it's like just the dumbest, like, and you know, it's like that divorced, like middle-aged dad who's just like, I keep my friends close, but my enemies closer. Like, okay, next segment. Heart takes. Say it. Stand it. Like, like say what you mean and stand by it. Yeah, exactly. Stand on it. Okay. Most people's ambition is actually just a need for external recognition, but that's in disguise. So someone's I didn't absorb. I'm sorry, I didn't absorb any of that. What do you how do you interpret that then? How would you interpret that? Most people's ambition is actually just a need for external recognition. Oh, okay. Gotcha, gotcha. So when someone like shows off that they're very ambitious, it's like they're waiting for people to be like, oh wow, you're so driven and successful. No, it's more so your ambition. Like you want to get lean and shredded. Sure. That's one specific goal. Substitute ambition for goal. Goal, okay. Okay. It's it's you're doing that for external recognition. Yes.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Just put it in plain matte terms. Yeah, I was like, use letters that have no more than a five. Use words that have no more than five letters. Cut it, bro. We're tired today. Use letters, Dutch Dog. Honestly, we're not even working out. Yeah, but just fucking sit down. I'm doing some leg raises here and there. I'm just getting a little pumped. Oh. That's so funny. How about this one? This is this is raw. This is raw, man. This is what makes it cool. This is not for validation. This is what makes it cool. It's just two bros chatting. Tired. Victor's interpreting all the messages. We're so tired. I'm tired boss. I'm tired boss. Okay. The fitness industry runs entirely on validation and always has. I fit that's a tough one because I think there's like some merit to people. I disagree. Yeah, I think there's some merit to people like encouraging others to train and stuff like that, or like from the athletic side of things, where it's like living leading a healthy life. Yeah. The lines can get blurred. I disagree with that. I mean, I think a large majority of it is, especially in the most recent like five to ten years where everyone and their mom is like a fitness personality or an influencer. I think that's like strictly for external validation. But I think it's like there's a good amount of good people out there that are it's more for helping others. My brother hashtag Matt Major.
SPEAKER_03Yo, check this out.
SPEAKER_02Jesus. I hope the camera caught people don't actually want feedback, they just want confirmation. Oh, that's an agree. Well, not everybody, but I think most majority. Yeah, I agree with that. Majority. And then the second that one of their close friends or people in their close circles that actually has the guts to tell them about it. Is real with them, they get mad at them. They get pissed. They're like, wait, what? Yeah. What do you mean? How talking about insecurities and problems? Okay. I'm gonna hit a few sets here. So you uh we'll take on the next the third segment, but I'll read another two from here. Sorry, I got soft knees. One sec, I said I'll read it. Oh, you got two. Okay, okay. You'll take it let me do this set again because I did like two reps and my knees be hurting. So ooh, this one is gonna hit deep, bro. You ready for this one? Oh, I'm ready. The most dangerous form of validation is the kind that you got as a kid that you're still chasing now. Dude, I'm Eastern European, bro. I got no validation. Fuck not damn, bro. Maybe that's why you're working so hard. What do you mean? You're not doctor yet? Bro, that's a form because you because you're trying to show that you're worthy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're still seeking the validation. You're trying to show that you're worthy and you're waiting for that one moment that you're done, like, Matthew. I'm proud of you.
SPEAKER_01Hey, maybe at your wedding he'll say that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's 50-50. Are you Matthew? Are you doctor yet? No, I'm so excited for his speech, bro. His speech is gonna be crazy. Matt is men, tia is women. Together, man and wife. Thank you for coming today. I love you all. Yeah, pretty much.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, posting your wins constantly is insecurity, dressed up as confidence. Well, that just circles back to like you just want validation. People be like, wow, you look good, or yeah, but you're like doing constantly posting only your good shit. You need to be, if you're gonna share content or if you're gonna be like posting online and whatnot, you need to be sharing the full spectrum. Do you ever feel the medium days, the bad days, the good days, the medium, bad, good days? Do you ever feel uh weird or awkward sometimes when you get that without seeking it? Like you're not posting or anything, but people compliment you. Do you ever feel like awkward sometimes when people are like, oh man, you look good? Like, what are you doing? You're getting lean or whatever, just like that context. More and more now these days, yeah, it's like do you feel that's because you feel like you don't deserve it, or you're like, I could be better? Or no, is because I see all of my friends around me get aging, growing older, yeah. Certain certain uh decisions made that affect the way that you lifestyle decision, you progress through life and whatnot, right? Yeah. And I think having you know been consistent with a training regimen since like 12 or non-stop, yeah, since birth, since out of the womb. Out of the womb.
SPEAKER_01Uh, is helping you know us kind of have that youthful appearance.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I find sometimes tiptoeing the line of how to explain this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, without being like, we're the best. No, but like you when you fucking shaved, bro, you lost like eight years. Yeah, it was crazy. Yeah. But that's what I'm saying. It was like that that's kind of what I was referring to in that example. It was like the compliments were nice, but it was awkward because you're just like, okay, thanks. This is I look like this all the time. I just don't have a beard now. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nothing's changed. Or, like you said, like a good what you said with the friends is a good example. Like, maybe the friends that are not in the fitness feel like we are, where they're like, you know, they you you go to like a an event and people haven't seen you in a while.
SPEAKER_00And they're like, bro, how do you look 22 still? Like it makes no sense. Like, what do you what's your secret? What are you doing?
SPEAKER_02And I'm like, I don't know, just exercise and eat, and I feel weird about it. Like it's happened. You feel like you're the outside and everybody's like, I know you don't think that, but like you've it's like it's weird. Yeah. Because everyone's like, maybe they have kids, or you know, they're the one I've been getting recently, like everywhere I go, multiple times, they're like, bro, you you're bigger, you're getting bigger. I'm like, nothing's changed. I'm I'm too I literally say, I'm like, I'm 204. Yeah, I've been there. I've been there for a while. I'm like, yeah, my next answer is it's the shirt. Oh, is that I wear like extra baggy now, so I think the you know how I have like we both have like the V Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So the the shoulders look really wanna like and it like tapers to the right, it doesn't taper. It does sorry, it doesn't, it like hangs on your shoulder.
SPEAKER_02So like it makes you look a lot bigger than you are. Yeah, yeah. I'm like, bro, it's the shirt, it's fine. I don't need I don't need these compliments, but thank you. It does feel weird. It does, it's it can feel awkward sometimes for sure. I don't know how to handle it. Okay, we're segment three. Segment three, okay. All right, these are the this or that. So this one's pretty quick. Honestly, it feels so much better. Um, instant answers, no context. So this or that, post every win publicly or build in silence. I feel like we did one of these before. Obviously, the build in silence is uh easy answer. Next uh 10,000 followers who don't know you, or 10 people that you respect and they respect you. Can you sell to those 10,000 followers that don't know you? Because then I'm gonna go with the 10. Yeah, this guy's this guy's on my level. What would you what advice would you give your 18-year-old self? Money. Invest in Bitcoin, you idiot. Make more money. You know, it's like that, it's like that interstellar scene where when he's yeah, he's banging on the window. That's you in the freaking looking at yourself in the yeah, like when you're 18. Playing World of Warcraft. Yeah, I'm sitting there playing World of Warcraft when I could be buying you. If we would have bought one singular Bitcoin for like three dollars at the time. Insane, dude. I saw I saw a clip of like a kid from like 2010 and he had a thousand bitcoins. He he bought, they were like a dollar each and he bought a thousand. And his mom's like, Are you sure you want to do all that and put that much money? And he goes, even if it goes to ten dollars, I'm gonna make ten grand. He bought a thousand bitcoin. That kid's probably sitting on what, like a billion dollars? That's like that's those twins. Yeah, those twins, the guys who are like those twins from the um crypto space. Oh, I know what you're talking about. I can't remember the names, but yeah, yeah. It's like Vander or something. Yes, yeah, yeah. Uh, be praised for something you didn't earn or be ignored for something that you were. Praised for something I didn't earn. I need that validation. Isn't this what this episode's about? No, no, no. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Ignore it and probably proud of yourself. Yeah, because that's where the true validation comes from. That's when you'll actually be happy. Yeah, internal validation. Validation from strangers or criticism for criticism from someone who knows you. Criticism's rare. Yeah. I think nowadays, especially everyone like tiptoes and doesn't tell you how it is a lot of the times. Most of your friends are always gonna be yes men. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the ones that GPT is a yes man. It's like, hey chat, I hit someone with my car. Okay, breathe. You did great today. Yeah. You first knowledge is first step is accepting that you committed murder. The second step is, hey, you're not the only one. There's been more. Yeah, exactly, bro. That's like chat. Let me if you'd like, I could list you the last eight documentaries that came out this month. Yeah, exactly. Um just say the yes. Perform confidence or performative confidence, I guess, or be confident and quiet, like quietly. How would you interpret that, Matt? I think that means like literally like be confident, like no, performative, like fake. Yeah, fake confident. Yeah, like you're not actually confident, but you like fake it till you make it, I guess, kind of thing. Yes. Um, be like every be like everyone, be liked by everyone, sorry, or understood by few. Well, I'm retarded, so do we have to feel like we should probably cut these that part out. Eh, whatever. This is who I am. Um or truly. Uh I lost my train of thought. Or understood by few. Understood by few, obviously. Um, chase approval your whole life, or spend a year completely alone living by your own standards. That's called being a hermit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how many people are capable of being a hermit these days. That's a weird one. Go viral once or build something slowly. Obviously, build something slowly. I'm going viral, baby. But I feel like if you just build something slowly eventually, you'll go really viral. Has it been working out? I have like a couple viral. Not much since No, no, no. I mean building something slowly, your business. It's working. But what if you went viral? Like viral, viral. I mean, it really only takes one. Like if you everybody gets one spy match. Yeah. If you get like a hundred million yeah, like heads. Think of that Hoktua girl.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02She went viral for that, and then she made bank. She did it, started an OnlyFans and then the podcast. Podcast Hawk to you or something like that. Talk to you. And then so many people ride off of that one, like did you see that it has to be a global phenomenon viral? Yeah, and you just gotta jump on it. Yeah. And I think she probably made like millions and just fuck up. Then she also she made a like a crypto coin, it's like the Hawk coin or something. And that's got her canceled. And then Rug pulled. Yeah. And then she got like. And then everyone was like, you fucking. I saw a video like maybe a month or two ago where it was like she was at like some signing and no one showed up. Well, of course. Yeah. It's like you're famous for a frickin' meme. Uh but but uh go okay. So let's go to segment four. Would you some more would you rathers? Um you have to commit no both. Do the best work of your life and have nobody see it, or do average work that everyone praises. Average, yeah, obviously. Well, that's weird though, because it's like it's a it's like a put it's not oh, we can't do both though. We can't say both. Yeah, no. I'm gonna go average because then at least my quality of life will be very high. And it's consistent, I guess. I I do I do stri try to strive for excellence, but that's the second one point there. But if that's the if that's a question, I'm gonna have to be real and logical here. Yeah. Average isn't bad. Yeah, it is. It's freaking horrible. Hang on. Uh okay. Be completely free of caring what people think, or be deeply loved by everyone around. You this is an actual good one. This is an actual tough one that maybe there might be a dichotomy of thinking. Oh god, the words are so weird. Um damn dude. You want me to read you want me to interpret it for you? No, I I got that one. Be completely free of caring what people think about you or be deeply loved by everyone around you. Everyone around you, meaning you're like friends, family, family, people that are important to you. Yes. I would like to think those people already deeply love me, but but then you'll but then you'll it's like you'll know. But if if you choose that option, then you're gonna care what people think about you. Oh man, that's a tough one. And if you and if you choose to not care what people think about you, then people no one's gonna deeply love you. I'm gonna jump off a bridge. Damn, bro. I think I would have to go with the deeply loved one to me. You've got to. Yeah, I would rather have a few people really, really care about me and just deal with the voices in my head about other people. Do that anyway. We have like that's just another day at the end. That's it in bed, that's when you go to sleep, that's in your dreams. In the middle of the night, middle of the day, wake up screaming. It's just life. Yeah. Yeah, that's that that was a good one. Yeah, that was a good, that was a good one. Next. Live without social media for a year or never get another like or comment again. Uh live without social media for a year, probably. Damn, man really wants those likes and comments. Yeah, I mean, I th I I I my mind went to more it'd probably be like nice to just have a break from I mean, 100%. 100%. And it's like, well, why can't you just do it now? But that but at that point, if you get like I have a friend who he like gave up social media for a few months and then he extended it, and then it ended up being a year, and he's like, honestly, don't need it. So he never never answered it. Really? Yeah. It's kind of weird though, because at least for me, it's like it's so but it's like a business thing too, right? Yeah. But I'm at a point where it's like, if I were to stop, I wouldn't really lose any business. You know what I mean? So I think I would I would take the year off social media.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Ooh, this is gonna cut deep. Uh oh. Have your parents' approval forever or your own self-respect fully intact. Deep cuts. How do you interpret that, Matt? Well, you parry you love you or your parents love you. You can't have both. Yeah, exactly. Oh, that's rough, dude. Um, I think I would go with the self one. Like more, because at the end of the day, that's what matters the most, right? How you you're that was so genuine. Nice job. Thank you. Okay. Segment number five. Overrated, underrated. This is gonna be super duper quick. Yeah, we're almost done. Um follower counts. Overrated. Oh, yeah, sorry, I meant to say overrated. Comment sections. Underrated? Probably, because then you can see like what I think if there's actual substance. Like if you don't have a lot of followers or likes, but you're a comment, like there's a lot of people engaging with it, and like you create conversation, and it's I think that makes that more important. Sharing your struggles. Underrated. Underrated. Caring what people think. Overrated.
SPEAKER_01It's underrated. You gotta care what people think. Uh you think so?
SPEAKER_02You think it's underrated? Like you should care what people think. No. It's overrated.
SPEAKER_00Okay, it is overrated. Okay, yo, I was like, I was so confused. I'm like, wait, hold on. We just talked about how we don't care. Like, wait, what?
SPEAKER_02My bad, I'm tricking you. Uh, you yeah, that was confusing as hell. All right, I I got it, I got it. You confused the shit with me, then. Okay, last one, self-validation. Underrated. Right? Yeah. That that makes sense. That's like the good answer, right?
SPEAKER_03Good answer.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I think we need a day off, bro. We're both fucking just so tired. It's okay. Just keep pushing forward. You never know what's gonna happen. Underrated. Okay. This is a question that's gonna we're gonna end with. Okay. It's one that we have to ponder. Does this work your answer? And give our our what we think.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02You know? Hit me. Okay. When did you first realize how much you were chasing approval and where do you think it came from? Uh I can answer first. I think the when I first started chasing approval is when I started competing in physique shows. Because you're literally getting judged on how you look. Okay. Where did it come from?
SPEAKER_00Why won't you love me, Dad?
SPEAKER_02No. Um, I think that came from me not being happy with how I looked and felt, you know what I mean? Like I was Were you bullied? No. It stems from a deep seated bullying high school. I was the bully. No, man. You were bullied. Probably I'm gonna cry right now. You were bullied, Matt. Nah. Um, you weren't you a skinny little bitch in high school? Uh, it was a skater boy. I was an emo kid. Um, yeah, I would say that probably when I started competing because I was just trying to like be like, man, I wanted people to be like, damn, this guy's fucking ripped and in good shape. I want to be like him. And I think that just stems from me being unhappy with how I felt or looked at the time. Nice. And with that, we're gonna end the podcast. What about yours? What the hell? Bam, dude. This guy rug pulled. Uh tell me your deepest, darkest secret, and done.
