Smokin' Aces - A LAN Party For Hookahs
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Will and Sam put on their leisure suits for their look at Smokin' Aces, the only movie that can give you the same kind of rush as seeing a pyramid of carefully-arranged wine glasses come crashing down right before the last one goes on. Join the boys for an off-beat and eccentric dark action comedy (it's dark because someone says a swear).
You know, I actually I actually got asked the other day um like what kind of element I would bend and I said I would be like a vape bender.
SPEAKER_04It's just the second you said vape bender, I immediately got an image of who that is. And like the worst guy. The worst fucking guy. He's like he's like hanging out outside the fucking Daven Busters. Yeah, and he's like fucking he like fucking like turns his vape into a cloud, like wow, like he turns into like a dragon or something, and like yeah, like a fucking like sailing bark. And they're like, wow, does it does it do anything else?
SPEAKER_02Like, no, no, obviously not.
SPEAKER_04No, no, and in fact, it like I can't do that with anything else, like literally only fucking mango jewel pods. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, dude, R.I.P. to mango jewel pods. Like, quick aside, there, like, thanks to fucking Tipper Gore and the goddamn government, um, they they took away our mango jewel pods because apparently high schoolers were vaping the fun fruit flavors. Now, you know, I I gotta hit menthol in this bull. I'm gonna go on a fucking tear here. I gotta make myself stop. But I mean, look what happened now is like the market is just flooded with these like disposable vapes from China that like I guarantee are worse for you and have like way more like candy-esque flavors than the good old blue-collar mango jewel pod. Yeah, we can't have nice things in America.
SPEAKER_04Tobacco, like good old-fashioned tobacco is making a comeback. Like, more people are smoking now. Shout out Big Tobacco, shout out Big Tobacco. Uh, I for one thought it was fucked up that they made you stop advertising to kids.
SPEAKER_02Joe Camel, he had a real vibe to him.
SPEAKER_04I was just saying, fucking, yeah, I wanted to hang out with Joe Camel. I was a fucking loser.
SPEAKER_02Like, Joe Camel's a cool guy.
SPEAKER_04Joe Camel's fucking cool. Like, he's got cool habits. Like, and I I get it, you gotta portray him as cool. You can't portray Joe Camill as like fucking like chain smoking while he's playing like EverQuest.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, I mean he's sitting there playing EverQuest with one hand, he's got the cigarette stuck in his stoma with the other.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you you no one's gonna buy cigarettes from that guy. So I I get that you needed to compromise, but honestly, by fucking swearing how bad it was, we probably just made it cooler.
SPEAKER_02Man, I mean it would cause like the biggest like legal blitzkrieg in history, but imagine like RJ Reynolds or whatever, like starts a fucking full like ad onslaught with uh like Mario characters, like just roasting bugs. Right?
SPEAKER_01It's a me Stoggio. It's a me Stoggio. Sometimes I need a quick puff on something thick to feel like a real man. This gives me the triple jump. It is a vice that makes us truly human.
SPEAKER_02And then you see like Smash Cut to Nintendo headquarters, and they're just like apoplectic with rage.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna say Shiguru Miyamoto was like, I like this.
SPEAKER_02Let's let it finally understand my they finally get what I was going for. It was a metaphor the whole time. It was a metaphor.
SPEAKER_04Mario, you see, is the real animal.
SPEAKER_02And like the ribbon or whatever you break it, where the pole you get at the you jump to at the end. That's the buzz you're getting from that first rip of the day.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, that's that's dude. I have had some mornings where like I I fucking did a little wake and bake, and actually, yeah, like that felt really nice. I could totally I like I'm just saying, I get what you mean. I get what you mean when you say that.
SPEAKER_02Oh bro, yeah. Have you ever been in a situation where you're like really like hypothetically, I'm speaking like hypothetically, of course, like been in like a living situation where you gotta wake up for that government job and like you know, you get up at some ungodly fucking hour, you just shake out like a Marlboro 27 or something, lean halfway out your like 14th story window, just blast until your like downstairs neighbor opens her window or even further, because the dumb keeps her fucking window open even in the wintertime, and like yells for you to stop, then you call her a and um and she complains to the fucking building management. It's a whole thing, but no you just keep doing that and you end up getting away with it because you know. Have you ever been there?
SPEAKER_04Uh seconds before we started recording, Will said, I think this is getting to me. I'm just saying there's there's a very satisfying uh uh line of logic to this conversation. This was foreshadowed, that's what they call foreshadowing in the business.
SPEAKER_02All right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So did you did you ever watch Avatar?
SPEAKER_02Uh you watched Avatar.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the last airbender, right?
SPEAKER_02You know, I first watched it in uh grad school. I hadn't watched it up till then. Absolute treasurer of a fucking television show.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely great series that has been done dirty ever since. Uh but you know, so you know the the theory of the uh of the uh lineage, this the avatar cycle. Every reincarnation it comes as a different uh bender element.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So theoretically, a vape bender could be the avatar at some point.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, which means just like a shitty version of Aang, who like I guess so.
SPEAKER_04Like Aang could have easily been the vape bender.
SPEAKER_02Right? Yeah, what kind of music do you think you would listen to? House.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, yeah. Like some like rock. Yacht rock, dude. Yacht rock. He fucking has like the lamest fucking he has like all the popular anime wall scrolls, like fucking evangelic, like nothing that's like really unique or anything he likes. He's just he he just he has an image and he's going so fucking hard to hit it.
SPEAKER_02There's like a big plot arc in like season two where in like bossing say or whatever, they like don't have any tobacco huts, so like he can't get any new fucking vape pods, and he ends up having to like learn how to sig bend.
SPEAKER_00Aang, you have to sig bend.
SPEAKER_02I can't do it. It makes me cough too much.
SPEAKER_04I can't do it, guitar. It makes my voice get really grappling like this. Oh jeez, guitar.
SPEAKER_02You're gonna have to stop gunning into my mouth because she's like, no, you're just trying. Fine. Just give me give me a fucking diet coke, then.
SPEAKER_04Give me some, don't you want some tea? No, fucking give me something with fizz.
SPEAKER_02Give me a fucking black and mild and a diet coke and shut the f up.
SPEAKER_04Give me a black and mild and a diet coke. Shut the fuck up, Katara.
SPEAKER_02And then it cuts to like, you know, he just smashes through the wall with a huge cloud of smoke, and all the uh fucking firebenders go flying. Fire Lord Ozai, you're finished. And then it cuts to Ozai, and he's just ripping a hookah and like Monk's cloud comes out and it's like how foolish you are.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that would be fucking rule. It could only be better if he no, see, I'm talking myself into it. We keep doing this shit where we say like something blatantly stupid, and then I think like, oh, that is actually cool though. Like, what if he carried like a giant hookah on his back, like fucking Mario Sunshine, and that's like that would be lit, dude. Oh fuck. Did you did you go to hookah lounges when you were uh too young to drink?
SPEAKER_02Way more than I should have. Yeah, yeah. Have you ever gotten sick from a hookah lounge? Way more than I should have.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, boy. I was just saying, I don't know of a lot of people going. I have not seen a hookah lounge in quite some time.
SPEAKER_02You know, it's been admitted. I'm sure some of the old places I used to go to are still around. A little bit of a hike, but I'm gonna at least.
SPEAKER_04I would wonder, I would wonder how hookah lounges handled the lockdown. Because you would imagine, like, they were definitely not getting a lot of business, right?
SPEAKER_02And like Yeah, they would have had to switch to like a delivery system, delivering shisha. Like honestly, like I've lived in scenarios where like there was one scenario that I lived in where there were at least three, sometimes four hookahas set up at once. Wow, used a delivery shisha system.
SPEAKER_04That's a lot of hookahs. How many people were there?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I was the only one that lived there, but like there were usually like five or six people there.
SPEAKER_04Five, so basically, everyone brought there was a land party for hookahs. Everyone brought their own fucking hook. Because like I thought the joy of a hookah was that you have this one thing that you're all gathered around and all enjoying, but no, all of you guys brought your own.
SPEAKER_02Well, you you trade hoses and shit, and it ends up in this big Gordian knot of fucking hookah hoses. You don't know what kind of shit you're gonna be getting. That's that does that's some part of that sounds kind of fun. Yeah, inevitably though, somebody like is clumsy and knocks over one of the hookahs, and then there's coals all over your carpet, and everyone's freaking out and trying to pick it up, but then your fingers are getting burned, so you're dropping it.
SPEAKER_04Boy, yeah, I guess that's why there's not a lot of hookah lounges. Because they have carpet. That's true. That's true, they got rugs and such.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, yeah, but under the table, potentially hardwood or something else. I wouldn't put those fucking oriental rugs. That that them shits are expensive and also presumably pretty flammable.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Um I remember the last time I did a hookah was in Flagstaff, and it was literally in some guy's backyard.
SPEAKER_02High altitude hookah.
SPEAKER_04On like a fucking yeah, yeah. On like a fucking uh picnic table. And I I remember, I'm like, is this really a hookah lounge or is this just some guy's house who has a hookah?
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's just some guy's house. Sometimes that makes it more fun though.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I mean, I get but I still paid for it. Like, if it was just some guy's house, like why couldn't I just come on?
SPEAKER_02What a goddamn choke, dude. Yeah, yeah, no. Uh fucking. I hope he has like a like a bad poop sometime in the near future.
SPEAKER_04I hope you have a hookah poop, pal. That means your poop comes out as shisha and you gotta smoke it.
SPEAKER_02You have to. You have to.
SPEAKER_04For good luck. For good luck.
SPEAKER_02For good luck. I just take bad luck, then then hookah my own shit. I yeah, I just take it.
SPEAKER_04Under under what circumstances like if if all right, just and bear with me, because I know we don't get political, but just bear with me.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04If Congress and the Senate and the President all said, like, we can do healthcare for all, right, if Will Palmer smokes his own tookie.
SPEAKER_02Fuck. I mean, could you is this event televised? I got a few questions. Is the event televised?
SPEAKER_04Um there has to be a witness. There has to be a witness.
SPEAKER_02Just one witness. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Because like you you can't just go in and ask us to believe you smoke.
SPEAKER_02Um, no, no. This is gonna get like out of context to make me sound like a weirdo, but like, do I get to choose like what I eat before the dookie?
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yes. That's big, okay. Um for all, and everybody knows that it was me. I was crucified upon this hookah of shit.
SPEAKER_04You're gonna martyr yourself. You're gonna martyr your you're gonna be a martyr. That's I respect that. I respect and admire that. You're gonna be.
SPEAKER_02Well, does everybody know that I did it though? Like for them specifically. Everybody knows that like I don't want to do it, like there's no unclarity about like I I'm like having a good time with this. Everybody knows that I am like sacrificing myself upon yes, yes.
SPEAKER_04Like, like it's very clear that for healthcare for all comes from will doing this. And I think you're I think you're wise to put your faith in humans because I do believe people would would like like take your hand and press it to their forehead as you passed.
SPEAKER_02Like probably wouldn't get laid very much afterward by like anybody. You only smoked, you only smoked it. You didn't eat it. How long do I have to smoke it? Until it's gone. Okay, well, that begs the question, like what do I just have to like shit enough to fill like a shisha bowl and then light it but light it up? You can that's a lot of fucking shit, dude. No, no, like is free healthcare really worth it?
SPEAKER_04Uh well well again, again, you control you you have to at least produce something the size of your palm, let's say that. If you produce more, you have to smoke it.
SPEAKER_02Easy.
SPEAKER_04You can cut it with other stuff, you can cut it with other stuff, but that just means you have more to smoke. So like that's where that's where the metagame comes in.
SPEAKER_02Do you go for it? Oh, when you say I can cut it, that makes it okay. That's easy. Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_04Okay, wonderful. All right. Um Hey, hey, while while I got you on this subject, can I just I know we talk about like a favorite thing about this that we talk about on this podcast is uh superheroes doing weird shit. Uh yes, of course. I stop me if I've if I've asked you this before because this has been on my mind for a lot. What if Superman like was Superman, but he only agreed to like save people and solve crises so long as like there was just one guy in the world, and anytime he wanted to, Superman got to watch him piss.
SPEAKER_02I'd first realize Superman watched me piss, dude.
SPEAKER_04I mean, and like and like yeah, but like it's it's Superman gets to choose who it is. Oh, okay. Uh it's all it it it's he's gonna choose someone, he's gonna choose someone who's over 30 years of age.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean if he chooses me, I'm fine with it. Like it's a little like what if it's somebody who like has a hard time peeing already? What if they have like a prostate issue or something like that? We don't want to have Superman bullying them.
SPEAKER_04He doesn't he doesn't bully them. He doesn't bully them, he just know what he's watching. He just watches.
SPEAKER_02He's got X-ray vision, he could just be outside the building.
SPEAKER_04See that that's that's the this is kind of where I was where I ended up on this. Because like Superman has X-ray vision and super hearing. You only have his word that he he's not watching UP.
SPEAKER_02Damn, imagine him flying through Metropolis and like he just hears thousands of people jerking off at all times. He knows exactly where they are, he probably even knows what they're fucking watching, even if they got headphones on. That would drive any normal man mad.
SPEAKER_04Maybe he makes it maybe he like just has a little fun with it to stay sane. Like he finds someone jerking it and like hovers outside their window and goes, Hey!
SPEAKER_02Hey, you're not paying for that Brazzard subscription. I know you and your boys share the password.
SPEAKER_04You you wouldn't steal a Pornhub subscription. Superman and for Superman gets sponsored by Pornhub and has to enforce their copyright.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02He's got the logo on his fucking pH instead of the fucking PS, the orange and black uniform.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he's just but he's specifically concerned about copyright, like or is he yellow and black?
SPEAKER_02That's embarrassing. I should know that.
SPEAKER_04I think it's orange and black. Okay. Yellow and black. That that would put my mind in the name of caution tape and hornets, and those are not sexy. Orange and black, that's Halloween.
SPEAKER_02That's you know, Halloween can be sexy.
SPEAKER_04That's one of the sexier holidays.
SPEAKER_02That's true.
SPEAKER_04The least sexy holiday, probably. Boxing day.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04No boxing day, I think. Like that's a day for fun, so that's that's kind of sexy, you know.
SPEAKER_02I thought it was just a day where British people just like fist fought. Is that what that is? I mean, you know, just going from context clues.
SPEAKER_04Well, I gotta say though, that still sounds pretty that's that sounds fun. Like, if I'm thinking about watching British guys like fist fight, I'm I'm thinking I'm having a good time. Like, I'm probably in a carvery with the other lads, and we're all going like, oh, like what the fuck is a carvery?
SPEAKER_02That sounds ominous.
SPEAKER_04No, it's it's uh it's like a little bit uh well you out here we say bar and grill. Over there they have like just a a a tray of meat that you get from. There's a fucking in-betweeners episode about this. You should watch it sometime.
SPEAKER_02Oh word. I've seen in betweeners, but not in the in betweeners fucking rules.
SPEAKER_04Uh we should probably start the show.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say, yeah, we really should. Uh you want to take it away?
SPEAKER_04Alright, yes. If you purchased a dick punching machine slash rice cooker, but instead of punching your dick, it only made rice, would you have the courage to ask for your money back? And if not, have I got the movie for you? Welcome to Slop Culture. Today we're talking about smoking aces starring everybody. Yes, welcome to Slop Culture, the happy hour podcast where we strive to see the beauty and stupidity. I am your host, Sam Sykes, and with me, as always, a man who acquired infamy and internet fame when he pioneered the original creepypasta, Ass Cat. The cat that has a human ass. It's Will Palmer.
SPEAKER_02Now, uh the Ass Cat experience, actually, and I that's what I call it as an experience, because it's not just a creepypasta. It was uh something that I lived through and uh in a way continue to live through the after effects of it on my shattered psyche. It's like a uh like imagine a house of mirrors, but every mirror is just filled with like a like a cat's asshole, but it's got like a man's ass around it.
SPEAKER_04That's exactly what I was I was thinking like a baboon, but like with a cat.
SPEAKER_02It's like a worse version of goatsey.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. It's like and it you you're not even seeing a hole there, it's just cheeks, but like they bounce a little. There's and you're like, God, that you you can't do that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so actually, uh Kane Parsons, the uh director of the backrooms or sorry, back rooms, who I believe is uh two years old.
SPEAKER_04Uh he turned out two years old, two years old as of as of this year.
SPEAKER_02And actually asked that um he be able to use uh my nightmares made reality as uh the basis for uh a new project. And um I I responded by just sending him a uh a sheet of paper that was just soaked in my own tears. Oh yeah. No, so I wake up screaming, dreaming of asshole cat.
SPEAKER_04I in my mind the creepy pasta is a little like uh smile dog.
SPEAKER_02Is it like a dog that smiles?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's just a dog with a human mouth that smiles, and it's like it's an unsettling thing.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's an unsettling image, but it's a it's funnier than oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's got it's got spooky lighting and everything. It's just a husky with their eye, with you know, because you know how huskies have big expressive eyes.
SPEAKER_02You see a cat with a human ass, you take that thing down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, see, that's the thing, is like I was thinking like ass cat ass cat spreads like the whole thing with like smile dog is like someone sends you smile.jpg and then you're cursed. So like I would love it if you got like a dot JPG. You got like a an email, a cursed email that says ass cat. You you open it and it's just a cat with a human butt, and you're like, yeah, it's looking back over its shoulder and like staring at you like, yeah, but it's got creepy eyes, and it's like and like there's a whole movie about it where everyone's fucking terrified, except for one guy who's just like, I I don't get it.
SPEAKER_02And then they never actually show the image that's haunted until the very end of the film when they just flash the whole thing at the audience for like two seconds.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like like the like the fucking ring where they flash through the accursed video at the end, so now you're cursed too at the end of Asscat the movie.
SPEAKER_02And then right after that, it's I'm John Leguizmo. Did you like the meme? I'm John Leguizamo. Did you enjoy the meme? I was Leguizmo. He's gonna come to my fucking house and hit me, and I'll deserve it.
SPEAKER_04Dude, John Leguizmo sounds like fucking the AI version of John Leguizamo. Like this uncanny actually, John Leguizmo could be his own creepy pasta. Yeah. It's like it's like some kind of entity that tries to trick you into thinking it's John Leguizamo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but there's always something just slightly off.
SPEAKER_04There's something slightly off, and not like and the movie about John Leguizmo is that he and John Leguizamo are in the same room and you have to figure out which one is which.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you only have one bullet and you gotta figure out. You only have one bullet and you gotta you can't kill film icon John Leguizamo. You have to kill his like bizarre world.
SPEAKER_04But you can't wait, let John Leguizmo escape.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're just like you're sobbing. You're just like, I need you guys to stand with your heads next to each other.
SPEAKER_04Like we can't risk it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like the real John Leguizamo goes, it's okay.
SPEAKER_02And then you just blast the other one immediately. Yes. John Leguismo, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I want the John Leguizmo to do something like the whole thing is like once you get cursed and you're visited by John Leguismo, he fucking He does something weird in your kitchen, like he fucking like he takes your all your cumin. And if you and if you don't have any cumin, he murders you he comes up to your to you while you sleep and said, I notice you don't have any cumin.
SPEAKER_02Then he unhinges his jaw until it reaches down to his knees and then just swallows you.
SPEAKER_04Swallows you whole. Like, I really, really wanted some cumin.
SPEAKER_02He's about to swallow you, and then the door gets kicked in, and John Leguizamo busts in.
SPEAKER_04John Leguizamo is be gone! Just holds up a copy of the Mario Brothers movie.
SPEAKER_02And Leguizmo bursts into flame.
SPEAKER_04Leguizmo like immediately vomits you up and then like falls to all fours and skitters into an air duct. You're like, John Leguizamo, what was that? And John Liguazamo goes, Don't worry about it, kid.
SPEAKER_02I got your back.
SPEAKER_04John Liguizamo goes, that was an old mistake.
SPEAKER_02John Liguazamo, hit us up, brother. Have we got a project?
SPEAKER_04John Liguizamo, we have the project for you. Uh fuck. We're here today to talk about smoke and aces. Uh which I really liked. And I said starring everyone, and yeah, pretty much starring everyone.
SPEAKER_02This movie stars 2006, and as you said, stars everyone.
SPEAKER_04Rayleigh were in this movie. Reinhold Reynolds. Yeah, yeah, we were we were backgrounds. I was I was Askat. This movie did star basically everyone, and it was very exciting. Uh and we're a little we're a little late in getting started, and the reason we're a little late is because someone uh and honestly, it's taking so much in me not to not to explode with anger over this, but you were having brunch. I was. And it's not that you were late, that's not what bothers me. I'm just not sure if I'm ready. And like, you know, I'll admit, I'm not the most modern guy. I I do have some kind of old-fashioned beliefs. I don't know that I'm ready to accept that brunch is a real meal. Have we talked about this?
SPEAKER_02Some, I think. Now, in my defense, I was invited to breakfast and I suggested a time that was late enough for it to be socially acceptable for me to pre-game the podcast. Oh, okay. We started recording this early afternoon, my time. And so I figured, you know, and then to be fair, lovely restaurant we went to. Um, it did take a little while to get the check through no fault of the waiters. It just, you know, of course, of course.
SPEAKER_04Hey, hey, fucking, this is a happy hour podcast. This podcast has respect for food service workers and hospitality workers in general.
SPEAKER_02And uh the person who joined me for brunch had brought their dog, who was lovely. And it's like a probably 22-25 minute walk from where we were having brunch to my apartment where the recording stuff is. So I called an Uber pet, which was cancelled on me. But then I called another Uber pet and it showed up like almost right away, and the driver was lovely.
SPEAKER_04What if they didn't like the look of that dog? And they're like, mmm. I don't I'm gonna cancel on this guy. Like, hey, that would have been that's fucked up.
SPEAKER_02Drive by really slow, like I don't know about that one. Damn, that purebred? Mm-mm. Mm-mm.
SPEAKER_04No, thank you. I'm out. Is that a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel? No dogs with more than four with more than three words. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No dogs with like princely names in them either. I like blue.
SPEAKER_04I don't want that fucking dog looking that is this Uber only supports working class dogs.
SPEAKER_02I want it like a lunch pail kind of dog.
SPEAKER_04Down, yeah. Uh a real like construction worker port a potty type dog. Uh fucking, you know, but it was a lovely brunch.
SPEAKER_02I did get back a little late for which I'm gonna do it.
SPEAKER_04What did you have? What did you have?
SPEAKER_02Um I had uh gazpacho soup because we were sitting outside and it was like really hot and the gazpacho soup was a special, and like that shit's cold. So I was like, I it was actually it was really good. I don't really have gazpacho soup very often at all. So it was nice.
SPEAKER_04And then I knocked back a couple espresso martinis because you know there was a whole Simpsons episode about how gazpacho is a terrible dish.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's easy to make fun of, but it was yeah, see, I I I just I keep going back and forth because sometimes brunch sounds pretty good, but then someone says something insane like I had gazpacho brunch and just my like I had my oh like not until I've had my brunch gestop gestapolo You just have some fucking Gestapo officer come by and just cheer your brunch police like you hiding enemies of the state under your table.
SPEAKER_04How do we keep coming back to Nazis? I'm going to I refuse. I refuse to go down this rabbit hole. I tr I was going to do a bit about how I wanted there to be more ritual in brunch. Like, there's gotta be something that like makes brunch not just fucking fashionably early lunch.
SPEAKER_02It's just because you get to drink on a Sunday. That's literally like the only reason. It's just a big one.
SPEAKER_04If you want to drink on a Sunday, church is right there.
SPEAKER_02Go partake of the blood. That one on a fucking t-shirt. God damn, that was a clean one.
SPEAKER_04Need it to be Oswald with the punchline. If you want to drink on a Sunday, church is right there. Right there.
SPEAKER_02But no, I mean I would have had a couple bloody Mary if that's to have them on the menu. Everybody loves a bloody Mary when they're a little hungry.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and and I guess I guess uh yeah, that's the thing is brunch feels like a hangover meal, but surely surely like breakfast accomplishes that better, right? Like brunch is not like a hangover meal, it's like for a round two.
SPEAKER_02Well, it it like that's another thing, is like um brunch can be like that, but keep in mind at brunch it's acceptable to have like a country fried steak if you're feeling, you know, with if you're with your boys, etc. If it's breakfast and you're having a country fried steak, like you can, and I'm not gonna judge you, but some people might. Right. You know what?
SPEAKER_04You might judge yourself. Yeah, steak is a classic breakfast meal.
SPEAKER_02Country fried steak at like 7 a.m. on a Sunday is a classic meal.
SPEAKER_04You know what? I'm gonna there is there is a very good breakfast place near me. Yeah, I'm gonna go there and I'm gonna look at the menu, and I'm gonna come back and we're gonna hash this out. I'm just saying, I'm just saying, I need like one more thing at brunch. Like, like just give me some kind of ritual where like we all stand up at the table and we hold hands and then we all circle once around the table and sit back down in our original spots, like a pagan vibe.
SPEAKER_02I was thinking more of like a blood oath, like you all like hold hands over like an ancient chalice and then like slice your palms and like bleed into it. Nobody has to drink it, but you just leave the chalice in the middle of the thing. Oh, you have to drink it. You have to drink it.
SPEAKER_04What if you do like a thing of King's Cup and like everyone pours a little bit of their drink into the chalice? And then like you all take a sip of it to indicate your bond. I mean Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, I just accidentally knocked the power cord of my external monitor out, and I was just like, why the fuck did the fucking I thought it was my like rude poltergeist coming around?
SPEAKER_04You made me feel so fucking stupid right there. Like it was the you you took my sincere ritual interest, and like I feel like the druid who first proposed human sacrifice.
SPEAKER_02You caught on for a while, and you're like, oh, cool, but I'm like, oh damn. Not bad, bro. I feel bad. I mean, you know who else felt bad? It was Ryan Reynolds in Smoke and Aces. He felt the other guy.
SPEAKER_04He felt bad on numerous levels, emotional, physical, mental. Uh you had not watched this film before.
SPEAKER_02I had seen it. I had not. This was your suggestion.
SPEAKER_04We've been we've been trying to balance the scales and have you pick some. And you've had some winners. You've had some winners. Uh fucking Red Dawn, a winner, Terminator Salvation. We had we had a lot of we had a lot of we had a lot of fun talking about it. We had a lot of fun talking about Swarthy. Swarthy. But this one, I'm pleased to say, was also a winner. I ended up really enjoying this movie. And the reason I described it as a dick punching machine that only cooks rice. We'll get into. We'll get into it. But I it to me it felt like a very finely tuned machine that did not do what I thought it was going to do. And that was that was a delight and a disappointment. But uh, I think before we get into our discussion about it, it might be time, and God help me, God help me, it's my turn to do the two-minute drill.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Sponsored by Red Tech! Sponsored by Red Tech. Fucking God help you, bro. I'll tell your story.
SPEAKER_04Exactly, exactly. Like, I don't know if I could do it in like 30 minutes, but I'm gonna fucking try my best.
SPEAKER_02He's got this.
SPEAKER_04Alright, I took a little sippy poo. Let me take another sippy poo.
SPEAKER_02Five, four, three, two, one. Good luck.
SPEAKER_04Ryan Reynolds and Ray Leota are FBI agents listening in on some uh crime bosses who are describing a magician in Vegas that they want to whack. And they've put some guys on it. The Swede, some hit women, and you're led to believe that this guy, this magician, Buddy Israel, has flipped on the mob and is about to turn him over to the FBI and rat on uh the mob boss uh uh peraza and Primo Peraza. Uh Sparazo, I think. Sparazza, sorry. Uh Primo Sparazza, who is wanted by the FBI for having whacked one of their agents in the in the distant past uh called Heller. And anyways, uh the FBI, Ryan Reynolds and Ray Leota, go after Buddy Israel, but at the same time, some bail bondsmen, Ben Affleck and two other guys, also go after Buddy Israel, and they reveal that there's also a pair of hit women played by uh one of them's played by Alicia Keys, uh also after uh Buddy Israel. And also there's some Nazis, one of them played by Chris Pine, who are also after Buddy Israel, and then there's also uh uh a Hungarian dude who's a creep, a sadist, and a master of disguise, and then there's a Spanish dude who's a creep, a sadist, and a master of disguise. Uh and then Ben Affleck gets shot by the Nazis, and the Nazis go on their way, and sort of everything starts converging around Buddy Israel, and then there's this massive fucking shootout, and then at the end of that fucking shootout, most people are either dead, heartbroken, or both. And it turns out Sparazza is the FBI agent Heller, and he went deep undercover, and uh all his and Buddy Israel is his biological son, and they're gonna steal his heart to transplant. And Ryan Reynolds says, We all died for this because Ray Leota got shot, and he says, We all died for this. Fuck this, and then he pulls the plug and kills them both, and it was all for nothing.
SPEAKER_02Very nice. Um I gave you yeah, I gave you 2.75 extra seconds because I interrupted toward the beginning with the spot.
SPEAKER_04I appreciated it. I I appreciated it. I appreciated the correction and the extra grace.
SPEAKER_02That was shockingly efficient, dude. You got the clutch gene for sure. That was real good.
SPEAKER_04I I was I I it was not easy because I left out a lot. I didn't talk about the amazing fucking dialogue, I didn't talk about all these wonderful little character bits. Uh I say, let's just get into it, man. Let's fucking talk about this.
SPEAKER_02Let's dive into this bad boy. There were a couple specific scenes that I was just overjoyed to have you watch. I'm curious if you can guess which ones of those, uh which scenes are those.
SPEAKER_04The elevator scene, for one. God damn it, I love the elevator scene. All of this movie, and like forgive me if I'm being too uh too pretentious in saying this, but I want what would you call this kind of movie where there's a lot of of players converging around one thing?
SPEAKER_02Oh well, I read in your notes I call it a lot of it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, a fox a foxhunt movie. And like, I'm sorry if that sounds pretentious and or if there's already like a movie title for this, but that's just what it felt like to me. I think that's really good. Like a lot of competing interests all fighting over this one thing, and like, you know, uh Rat Race was a similar foxhunt movie.
SPEAKER_02I'd say I wouldn't have thought of it, but yeah, when you point it out, yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_04And like you have all these different characters going after Buddy Israel for various reasons, and they all converge at a hotel, the nomad in Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe, right. And basically they all meet each other during this very tense 15-minute scene where they're all stuck in elevators with each other.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the elevators start to get shut down when the security gets alerted. Oh shit. Yeah, everybody's converging simultaneously, they're all at different stages of the fucking hotel. Like Tommy Flanagan, I think the uh he plays the master of disguise. Like Laszlo Soot, who's uh he's already reached the penthouse, and then there's the other master of disguise, the guy with no fingertips, who's in the elevator with Ray Leota. And then there's Ryan Reynolds, who's on the ground floor, and then the trying to catch up, and then there's Alicia Keys as Sykes. Yeah, and she's trying to blend in with a bunch of the hookers who are heading up to Israel Suite.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she's trying to po she's trying to blend in with hookers so she can get into Israel's suite and gun him down.
SPEAKER_02And then there's her partner who's uh posted at a hotel across the street with a sniper. Yeah, waters. Then there's Common, who's uh who plays one of Israel's bodyguards, who Israel's trying to screw over and pin all his crimes on. And he's up in the penthouse too, and he doesn't know that the Master of Disguise is there as well. And there's all these intersecting parts, and like you said, yeah, 15 minutes everything collides in this crazy explosion of You're gonna think I'm nuts for this, but it kind of reminded me fondly of Shogun.
SPEAKER_04Uh because my favorite my favorite thing about Shogun is how all these motivations and plots and interests start crossing over each other. Like when I read that book, it was really life-changing for me just to see how that was done.
SPEAKER_02And like There wasn't just the sushi.
SPEAKER_04I don't think they talked about sushi in that book.
SPEAKER_02Because didn't you read it at all?
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, no, I did I did read it when I was when I was fucking uh really sick from having an octopus. But no, like like it was a for one, it was a welcome uh relief from from thinking about puking. Uh but I was so into it that like I reread it on because I was in Disneyland on a family trip, and like during the during the ride back, I reread it because I liked it so much.
SPEAKER_02And it's a long ass book. I mean, I know you're a fast reader, but that's that's some dedication.
SPEAKER_04I gotta say, if you're having trouble focusing on reading, just eat some octopus, start puking and pooping, and you have a massive tome of like epic historical literature open in one hand, just leaning over the fucking chunder bucket, like reading it one eye, and it's like Yeah, I I think I have like five books in my bathroom. I'm here in I'm here in my little office and I'm uh it has its own bathroom and I'm just giving a quick count. I think I've got like five. I've got an art book.
SPEAKER_02Right, you're totally right, because I've stayed at your place and you've got do you have any books? Do you keep books in your bathroom? I don't, but I'm literally thinking now which ones should I put in my bathroom?
SPEAKER_04The main problem I think it's probably I think it's probably more sanitary not to have them there, but I I try to just mean restroom, but like I don't want to do scroll while I'm in on the toilet, you know? Like I'm already having a nice time.
SPEAKER_02I usually use like on the the Apple News app, they have like some like daily game. They have this one called Quartiles that's fun. You like put together. Yeah, I try to do that. I try to like get all the main ones. I never really do it, but I try to get all the main ones in like one shit. Sometimes I'll be there till my legs fall asleep, which is like probably pretty bad for me.
SPEAKER_04But lethal weapon style. Yeah, yeah. You got you gotta get up and walk around and come back.
SPEAKER_02Come back.
SPEAKER_04That's the word, that's the worst kind of kind of time when like you're stuck on the toilet and like your legs are falling asleep, so you like gotta clench and like walk around a little a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, do the old Donald Duck.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, dude, dude, just like err. Yo, the Donald Duck. There is no there is no fucking uh outfit less dignified than the Donald Duck.
SPEAKER_02And like a sailor suit without pants.
SPEAKER_04Well, I mean, specifically the look of of wearing a shirt with no pants, but not like it's not like uh fucking, you know, because you know, like some you know it's not like an oversized shirt uh that that covers. No, no, it's not it's it's just literally a shirt with no pants. It looks fucking horrible, no matter who's doing it.
SPEAKER_02Like here's a question would it look better or worse if he was wearing Nike dunks? I think it would look worse.
SPEAKER_04I think that would be because then it's like a conscious decision. Like it already looks terrible when when like but you know, there's there's there are reasons why you might be wearing no pants and a shirt.
SPEAKER_02It's like hard to put on pants with duck feet, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but if you fucking if you fucking deliberately left out pants and put on fucking shoes, come on. Like you you are deliberately saying I am setting out to ruin someone's especially if you put on some fresh high tops, dude. Ooh, fucking yeah, that would that that would be worse. Like if it was really nice and like a fucking ratty ass t-shirt. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But Donald Duck has clearly spent like hundreds of dollars.
SPEAKER_04Fucking like Tasmanian devil t-shirt that says like attitude or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Donald Duck is a sneakerhead, is a whole vibe. I can't do the Donald Duck voice. I knew a guy when I was uh growing up. I won't I won't do it. If he's listening, he knows who he is. He did the best Donald Duck impression.
SPEAKER_04Fuck. No, I can't do it. I sound like I'm dying.
SPEAKER_00Sounds like you're channeling mammon again.
SPEAKER_04Gorsh, Mick. Well, g well, Gorsh, Donald. What dread sacrifice did you make to invite the to offer up your body as a mortal vessel?
SPEAKER_02Donald just starts he just starts hovering and fucking like flames start coming out of his beak, his eyes were.
SPEAKER_04He got so fucking pissed off at Chip and Dale that like he pursued the dark arts to get rid of them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he sacrifices Chip and Dale on like a dread altar.
SPEAKER_04I was thinking he sacrificed his nephews, Huey Dewey and Louie, and to gain power to kill. Um fuck it. Well, now you got me thinking of like fucking Donald Duck as Griffith.
SPEAKER_02Like I and what, like, is Goofy guts? I think Goofy would be guts in this case. Honestly, yeah. That's an incredible crossover that we would get sued by a variety of people for.
SPEAKER_04But I feel like Mickey is I feel like Mickey is void.
SPEAKER_02I feel like Mickey is one of the giant fucking brain coming out of his head behind the ears.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, exactly. Fucking uh Uncle Scrooge is there.
SPEAKER_02He's the skull knight. Uncle Scrooge is the skull knight.
SPEAKER_04Uncle Scrooge is the skull knight.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Alright, fuck, fuck, we we we can't keep doing this. We're uh we we're here to talk about it. Which um yeah, so so the other scene I think you thought I would like is when they gunned down Ben Affleck and his boys in the parking lot.
SPEAKER_02You got it, too far.
SPEAKER_04And Chris Chris Pine uh hovers over Ben Affleck's corpse and in one really fun scene takes Ben Affleck's cold dead lips and makes him talk and says, I forgive you, Darwin, because Chris Pine is playing uh a neo-Nazi named Darwin. Yep, and he goes, Like, shoot, I really appreciate that, man. Like, if I was in your situation, I would do the same thing.
SPEAKER_02Now give us a smile, and then he like opens up his dead eyes and like moves.
SPEAKER_04It makes him smile. And like I was shocked because this happens relatively early. Like, we meet Ben Affleck pretty quick.
SPEAKER_02Uh, but then we say two homeboys who were like ex cops, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, who are working with him. He's a Bale Bondsman. They're they get a job from Jason Bateman to bring in Buddy Israel.
SPEAKER_02Jason Bateman and like a massive cold sore ones.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Jason Bateman playing like possibly the best thing I've ever seen Jason Bateman in. Like and I I I do think he's a great actor, but he had a fucking loss of composure. Well, he he still is playing his his normal guy, like hey, meet Jason Bateman, but he's saying such heinous shit, crazy shit. He's out of his mind, he's got a fursuit, and it's like he's great in it. But then as soon as we meet Ben Affleck, he gets fucking gunned down. And it it really does seem like they ran out of budget, like really, really quick.
SPEAKER_02Like But they had so many other like big name actors that stuck around for a while, you know?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, it was weird. Like you can you can have Ray Leota or Ben Affleck. Did you real quick aside? I promise I won't go down this road too much, but did you see did you see Cocaine Bear? Yes, I did. It was a great movie, and that was Ray Leota's last. And my gosh, he was great. He was great in it. I loved that movie so much. RIP to Ray Leota, dude. Ray Leota. He was a fucking too too the original good fella.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a legitimate not joking see you with the crossroads, brother. Except maybe not because I think he was too good for Quiznos.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, we will see you in like an act in a Sizzler. Alright, Quiznos Sizzler. And I'm sorry, I said I would get off this real quick. And I I will, but once we get off this, but like what are the other restaurants you find in Purgatory?
SPEAKER_02Long John Silvers is for like the worst people.
SPEAKER_04Oh, like Long John Silvers has got to be like at the edge of hell. Like you're you're you're going to like genuinely bad territory at that point. You know what though? I've had Long John Silvers only once, and when I ate it, I also puked. So for a while I thought I was allergic to fish.
SPEAKER_02How about this? Uh Waffle House is for like the true, like chaotic neutral people.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like Waffle House is a little like Valhalla, you know? But like specifically that image of Valhalla from Vinland saga where it's like corpses fucking fighting in a river of blood. That's Waffle House.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, shout out Waffle House, though.
SPEAKER_04Shout out Waffle House, where only the strong survive. There's probably one or two.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're just like an older person, like died in their retirement home. Like you did some good works during your life, but you're not that exciting.
SPEAKER_04You know, Quiznos is true neutral, though. Like, like if you were Dick Cheney.
SPEAKER_02Are we saying Dick Cheney is true neutral?
SPEAKER_04No, we're not gonna do that. We're not gonna I I I take it back. I take it back. Dick Cheney was not true neutral. Um yeah. I'll come back to it. I'll come back to it. This is too good to pass.
SPEAKER_02Put a pin in it.
SPEAKER_04But uh, alright, so that's two scenes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, those were uh the two major ones that uh there were a few others that I really liked that I think um that I'm curious to get your feedback on too, but those are my two biggest.
SPEAKER_04This is this is my thing with this movie, is like it is kind of a dick punching machine because it sets up all these really interesting characters who are very cool from the fucking get-go.
SPEAKER_02It does it pretty efficiently too, because there's let's be honest, there are a metric fuckload of characters in this movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. And like my favorites were the hit women, Sykes and Waters. Uh I loved their dynamic. Waters is in love with Sykes, Sykes is loves her like a friend, they work together, they're they're torn up about each other when Sykes gets fucking hit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh it's genuinely heart-moving because you can feel Waters' stuff, and then that doesn't go anywhere. Well, yeah, well, I mean it it does, it I mean, it goes somewhere.
SPEAKER_02Because Waters gets like owned by an FBI, like, yeah, watersome other ones.
SPEAKER_04Waters gets taken, it's implied that she gets taken down, it's not confirmed. Uh because you never actually see a body.
SPEAKER_02That's a good point.
SPEAKER_04Uh but yeah, like I'm just saying, I would have liked to see more of that. And then I would have loved to see more about the fucking neo-Nazis. And like, this is what's interesting is like everyone gets just like one really good scene of dialogue, like Ray Leo uh Ray Leota and Ryan Reynolds in the opening scene when they're in the fucking uh We both noted that, I think, that they're yeah, when they're in the van and like and like they have beautiful chemistry right off the bat, yeah, and then they don't really get anything else, and then like you love watching fucking uh Ben Affleck talk to his homies and then they get fucking machine gunned at a parking lot, and then they get the Tremors talking to each other.
SPEAKER_02That the neo-Nazis are called the Tremor brothers. You see them talking to each other, and they have that one scene in like the elevator shaft where you know lighting cigarettes with a fucking flare and stuff, yeah. And then they get fucking owned for the most part by common. One of them gets the sits on a chainsaw, which like ouch.
SPEAKER_04Not not great, not great. And then fucking uh we get like one really good scene with Common.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. And then like And uh yeah, him and Jeremy Piven. Yeah, yeah, and and some follow-up, but then eh, and just like we get a good scene with Laszlo, we get a good scene with fucking uh Yeah, Laszlo the true master of disguise, played by uh Tommy Flanagan.
SPEAKER_04Tommy Flanagan, yeah. Yeah, like just so many great characters that I really wanted to see more of them all. And like that's you know, that's that's like one of those very weird criticisms because it's not really a criticism, it's just like I I would have loved more of this, because I got you. But they all got to have these really clever vivid moments in a way that it just kind of felt like vignettes, you know? It it felt like it felt like nobody really got to have well, like I guess Ryan Reynolds had a true character arc, but even then, like he didn't have enough time to really be the focus, yeah, and it really didn't sink in, and then like like everyone has like the first makings of a character arc, and then it doesn't go anywhere. And like, you know, and it's debatable how many of these characters we needed because like Laszlo Soot is a sadistic psychopath master of disguise who employs cruel torture weapons, and then there's another hitman who it's never described who he's working for, he's just there, but he's also a sadistic, cruel master of disguise with a bunch of torture weapons.
SPEAKER_02He wasn't really sadistic, though. He like when he like uh like every time he like killed somebody in like an assassiny way, it was really only like the the head of security guy.
SPEAKER_04They like Well he fucking r he recited a poem to him as he died, though. You're telling me that's not fucking sadistic?
SPEAKER_02Well, it's better than just like night like doing what the Tremors did, right? And just like machine gunning people and doing like right. I'm not saying he was a good guy, but I'm just saying there was at least a little difference.
SPEAKER_04I'm just saying you had two Master of Disguise hitmen with a very curious uh relationship with violence. And that's true. That that's that's a little tough, you know. That like given that I wish we could have had more out of a couple of these scenes, it is a little baffling.
SPEAKER_02Now, here's a killer segue. Speaking of like an interesting relationship with violence, like this movie, I think that tonally it could I think it pulled it off, but it was a narrow thing. It has like it does have a weird relationship with violence in that um, you know that scene where the Tremor brothers are like attacking all of uh Jeremy Piven, but Buddy Israel Security, yeah. And there's a bunch of like silly slow motion, they're throwing around grenades and stuff. One of them has a fucking chainsaw, and then Common manages to shoot that guy so that he falls and sits on his own chainsaw. Like that is objectively wild and like kind of hilarious. Uh but then cut to like a few minutes earlier when uh Ray Leota and the Spanish guy, the uh secondary master of disguise. Acosta. Yeah, Acosta, just uh Ray Leota notices that Acosta that he doesn't have any like fingertips, he's like bitten off his fingertips to avoid getting identified previously. Um and he notices the fingertips, and then immediately like the two of them have like the clumsiest, sloppiest, I think realistic shootout that I just absolutely adored. Because these guys are not being tactical at all. Like, you know, Ray Liotta gets stabbed in the fucking hand, he's using his offhand and blasting, and Acosta Acosta pulls out a sleeve gun, and then you get this beautiful shot from the top of the elevator they're in, is like the lights get shot out, and then all you see are the muzzle flashes, these two guys like incredibly clumsily blasting each other. And it's the least elegant shooting scene that I've seen in like a minute, and I adore it for that.
SPEAKER_04I I agree, I agree with you, but I think I can uh join these two ideas together. I think uh because I did not get that many uh that m as much time with these characters as I wanted, I think because of that I it was not so impactful when they had because the joy of like the sloppy gun fight is that it looks fucking chaotic and you're like holy shit, it looks like because it it feels like the opposite of a John Wick, you know, where John Wick's gonna like mostly escape unscathed.
SPEAKER_02Right, like one of the top examples, like one of the best of the best, you know, the basement scene in um Inglorious Bastards. Wow. Yeah, the basement scene in Inglorious Bastards. That's like the peak of like this kind of thing. But you had more I I get what you mean, because you had more time with those characters in a lot of ways in your life.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, and like and like um you know, I felt something because uh uh fucking um Sykes gets hit and Water and they lose contact and Waters assumes she's dead.
SPEAKER_02Just flips a shit and starts cutting loose with the 50 cal through the window. And then Ryan Reynolds is just mag dumping his pistol out the window at just generally at the hotel across the street. Like, don't do that, don't do that. There's other people staying there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, like yeah, no, it was it was weird, but uh we had been we had gotten enough of them to know that they were like that they felt things about each other, and so that was tragic. And later, Sykes gets rescued by Common, who carries her out. He's playing Sir Ivy, and I'm sorry, we're just gonna keep drifting back and forth between real names and character names. There's too many characters, but uh Waters realizes that Sykes is alive, but then sees her in the arms of someone else, and he's just like and she just she's heartbroken, and that allows the FBI to implied get the drop on her. Yeah, and like that's the most emotional it got. Like, it did feel shitty when uh Ray Leota's character died, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Truly like fucked up about it. He's asking like how are your wounds and Rhea Little says mortal.
SPEAKER_04He's like, fuck! Like, but again, like we don't really get that. Like when Ben Affleck died, that was shocking, but it was it was more like but the shock was pretty temporary.
SPEAKER_02It's like, oh well, I mean, think about it. If you saw me, I got lit up in the elevator by some like Spaniard, right? Like, how would you react, bro?
SPEAKER_04I'd I'd be upset, but like if I was in the same parking lot and I saw Ben Affleck get I'd be like, Well, that sucks. I did, I did really enjoy Ben Affleck's movies, but like I I can't say as I feel anything personal towards, and that's kind of what I mean, is like all these very cool characters, you don't really get to spend as much time with them sometimes.
SPEAKER_02Like Alice, the only survivor of Ben Affleck's group, has a truly bizarre side story that only the only real place it goes is him killing uh Chris Pine toward the end of the movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and that's satisfying from that's satisfying from a construction standpoint, like a plot standpoint, but again, like you don't really it's like you don't really feel that much for the characters who die. It's like, oh no, and like towards the end, uh Ryan Reynolds chooses to pull life support from both Buddy Israel and uh Saprasa.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, why is he killing Buddy Israel though? I mean Buddy Israel does kind of suck, but like I don't know. Yeah, I mean, yeah, but like I don't know. And it makes for a cooler scene with him pulling both plugs and like sitting in between them.
SPEAKER_04The whole thing is Ryan Reynolds and uh Ray Liotto were not told what the real mission was, and they got sacrificed.
SPEAKER_02So that Buddy Israel's heart could literally be cut out by like a strange guy and it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and it's and it turns out they they misheard the information. It's a whole thing. It's like it doesn't matter the special way. But like and Ryan Ren Ryan Reynolds is fucking going high on emotion here. So like he does.
SPEAKER_02What did you think of his performance? Because I saw it.
SPEAKER_04I thought he was great.
SPEAKER_02I thought you'd be skeptical initially, which I think you were, um, seeing that he was like the top build person, but I think you did a good job.
SPEAKER_04You know what? Like we're talking about, yeah, we're early Ryan Reynolds is very similar to early rock in that I infinitely prefer early Ryan Reynolds to late Ryan Reynolds.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah, this movie was 2006, so this is quite early Ryan Reynolds.
SPEAKER_04And even then, I think I'm being slightly unfair. I really the only reason I kind of don't quite vibe with Ryan Reynolds is because he is very he's Deadpool. Like he is the face, the voice, the body of Deadpool. He is the character of Deadpool. And I just don't really vibe with Deadpool that much. Like Deadpool. I I'm not saying I don't like him. I'm saying he's very cool. It's just like I I get it. I get it.
SPEAKER_02This was before Ryan Reynolds became Deadpool. I got it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like I I have nothing against Deadpool as a character. I'm just saying he's not my thing because I I I don't like the quirk shit. I don't like the fucking the fourth wall breaking. The fourth wall breaking. I get the appeal. Absolutely, I get the appeal. But like, again, like this is a the I've told you multiple times that like my preferred uh style of humor is like unself-aware, you know, like yeah, like I I did I like if if Deadpool were about a guy who had the opposite problem of regeneration, where like he was where like he exploded upon taking a single hit and maybe then he regenerated, I'd find that better.
SPEAKER_02Like the opposite of one punch man, he just like immediately gets over.
SPEAKER_04Like if he's literally a glass cannon, like I would love that. I would love that. And that's and you know, like I also for the same reason I like the concept of She-Hulk. I have not found a lot of property, a lot of uh issue books, stories, shows with She-Hulk, but I love the idea of like a litigant in a superhero world, you know. If yeah, if Deadpool was even like you know, if there was a movie about like a fucking uh if Dead that's the if Deadpool was Deadpool does insurance fraud, yeah. Like if Deadpool did insurance fraud, I would love that. I would fucking find that. But like, you know, all the pool all the jokes are about killing people and and liking B Arthur, which sure.
SPEAKER_02And in this one, Ryan Reynolds he played it much you know straighter. There's not any fourth wall breaking. Yes, that's the thing.
SPEAKER_04Is Ryan Reynolds Ryan Reynolds's strength is that he can channel a lot of emotions and do it coherently. He's not a s like like he can still be have some level of composure.
SPEAKER_02Even when like you can tell his character is freaking the fuck out, you know.
SPEAKER_04And that's why I don't think I vibe with Deadpool. Is Deadpool is too composed. There's not a lot of panic. Uh like it is fun, and I get that. He's he's a funny guy, he's a funny character, but it can take away from the stake. But yeah, but but like but the whole thing is in this one he did very well. But like only the top billing actors did got that time to really did you get enough time that you could feel something, and even that was not enough.
SPEAKER_02But that said, you know, our boy Joel Edgert Edgerton was in this as Hugo, and Hugo's only scene was getting chewed out for like busting a huge load on one of Jeremy Piven's coats.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then he got executed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then he got executed. But like honestly, dude, like if you'd busted a huge load on one of my coats, I guess it really does depend on the coat, but like I mean Well, like I would you know what, butthole, I would hope that as your cousin, you would at least ask me for my side of the story before.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I would just before you jump to conclusion. I just don't know about it. Because what if, what if, since you're so fucking smug, like what if I was at the fucking uh or I was at your fucking uh apartment and I'm just waiting for you to get home, like I'm visiting you or something, and someone bursts in and holds a gun to my head and says, Jack off on your cousin's coat.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I mean, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you know, I come in why would you give me the coat knowing it has such a traumatic memory attached to me?
SPEAKER_02Because your cum was all over it or is all over it. I don't want to.
SPEAKER_04Why can't why well fucking shouldn't we if I gave it to Goodwill, that would be kind of mean.
SPEAKER_02Like, you know, that's tags on the shit of Goodwill saying this got cum wrong.
SPEAKER_04I'm saying, why don't you take that and use it as like the basis of a new superhero? Like, I will not rest until I find the guy who's going around forcing people to beat off on their cousin's goats.
SPEAKER_02It's like Batman, but like, you know, instead of his parents getting murdered in an alley, somebody like nutted on his favorite Pikachu.
SPEAKER_04And like, what if what if you're a very effective superhero, but you're you're but your your interest is so limited that like you can only help out on certain things.
SPEAKER_02I mean, uh it this would inevitably end with me like riding public transit and just being very successful. Right? I'm not even gonna beep that one out. You know what the problem is on public transit. There's a reason you guys have women-only cars. You know what?
SPEAKER_04Do beep that.
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't want to antagonize, but I mean I don't want to antagonize them either, but like, you know, culturally, that's not cool. You know, in America, we acknowledge that we did I'm gonna beep it. I'm I'm gonna beep it.
SPEAKER_04Fucking I just had no idea where to go with any of that. Like oh fucking so I think but I think but I think I think like this is my whole point is that I appreciated Smoke and Aces for what it did. And I guess you could kind of extrapolate I could kind of link this to the Deadpool thing too, in that they occupy similar mental space. I appreciate what they did, but it just wasn't quite my thing. Like Smoke and Aces, it keeps getting set up like this very finely tuned machine, and the joy of it is watching the machine destroy and come apart. And I do not deny that that is fucking effective. Watching something very fucking and you know, it's a comedy. Of course shit's gotta go wrong, but I'm just saying I would have also loved to see that movie that machine do what it was intended to.
SPEAKER_02That was gonna be uh my next question. Is how do you think that would have looked in like in like a more like a general kind of sense, but like not necessarily character to character, but would you have preferred it play out with like all the groups get together for a big shootout at the top?
SPEAKER_04Or yeah, I was kind of hoping for something like that, to be honest. Like, I was kind of hoping for like a maybe like a hot potato situation where fucking like Buddy Israel is like because like that's the whole point is that I was kind of hoping that Buddy Israel would like have to just navigate a fucking like endless gauntlet. Like I was kind of hoping it would be a little like the gauntlet where like it's just you know trying to escape a lot of people coming after you. Like I wanted to see the fox I wanted to see the fox get hunted. And what if you said the fox I saw the hunters turn on each other and like sure sure absolutely legitimate creative choice, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then at the end, like the game warden ices the fox and the fox is dead.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, and like I do and like so early on they say like they say like, oh, uh we used to have an FBI on this guy, Sparazza, where he was gonna undergo plastic surgery to infiltrate the mob. Yeah, you picked up on the twist that the FBI wasn't even a twist, like because there's a scene like right after that where Ryan Reynolds is looking like hey, have you seen the the the file on Sparazza? He's had all these reconstructive surgeries. In fact, he's had the exact reconstructive surgeries that we were just told Heller had. Like, yeah, okay, asshole. Like, so it makes it makes the twist at the end, like, oh Sparazza is Heller. Like, it makes it seem really stupid. Yeah, I'm sorry, it just it makes the whole twist not work for me at all. And to the point where I'm actually kind of disappointed that I didn't get a shootout because even if the fucking shootout had a twist, I'd at least get a fucking cool shootout.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I got some shit.
SPEAKER_04I got some shooting. I got some shooting. I'm saying, but like I could've I would have you know, like this is really one of those situations where like I got served lobster and the lobster's delicious, but I was kind of hoping for steak.
SPEAKER_03Well done. You know?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Like still wonderful. Great.
SPEAKER_02Loved it. But I'm gonna rip a quick piss and then I got uh one more question for you, but I'll leave it to entertain the audience. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh god, it's gonna be fun to listen to when I edit.
SPEAKER_04See, he says rip a quick piss, but like I don't know. Like you should really take your time when you're pissing. Like, don't force it. Uh you have a nerve that runs down your body called the vagal nerve, and it goes. It it controls a lot of the uh blood flow to your head. And this is why they say, like, don't fucking force, bear down. Uh, because uh if you bear down on a toilet, like you know, if you're sitting on the toilet and you just force it out, you might have a vasovagal reaction where you pinch the nerve, your vagal nerve, and you just don't uh you don't get blood to your head, and you might pass out on the toilet, and that would be terrible. So, like, don't rip a quick piss. Like, just fucking take your time. Take your time, uh, hydrate often. Hydrate often so that you can take your time and just like piss at your leisure. I really there's I can't remember, I think it was fucking uh Alamo Draft. It was some movie theater that I went to. They just had individual rooms, and like my favorite bar here just has an individual bathroom, just two bathrooms, no stalls, and just that's wonderful. And like, obviously, be courteous. Be courteous. Uh just I'm I'm just gonna finish my thought. Just just be courteous, like, don't take too long. But like, do take your time. Like, obviously, don't fucking like just chill in the bathroom.
SPEAKER_02If is he talking shit about how long I took to piss?
SPEAKER_04No, no, I was just advising the audience because you said rip a quick piss, and I'm like, you know what? I hop I I hope he takes his time because it's not good for you to force it. So like just don't just don't just squeeze your piss out, just like fucking take your time. And I was just saying, like, I was saying that the you know, at at my favorite bar down here, they have uh they have two restrooms and then just a room with one toilet. And I think I like that. I like that, you know, like no stalls, no codes, just like no this is for this gender, this is for that gender. It's like it just go in there, pee, wash your hands, leave, maybe fix your maybe fix your fucking uh hair. And I'm just I'm just telling the audience, like, do take your time, but like don't fucking like monopolize the bathroom time, you know? Now, that's the trade that's the trade-off. That's the trade-off of a high trust society.
SPEAKER_02Hear me out here. Incredible bar, amazing vibe. You go there, everybody's your friend. You get great prices on drinks. In fact, a number of the drinks are free, but there's a five percent chance per drink that it's spike with laxatives. And it's not like a crazy amount, but it's enough that you like you're gonna need to shit. And the only things available in the bathroom are troughs.
SPEAKER_04So you have to shit in the trough. Yes. So if there's a five percent chance that I'm getting laxative, that means everyone else is getting laxative, too.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Yes, including the bartenders if they choose to drink with you.
SPEAKER_04So that so that just means that like at no point when I come to this bar will I not see poop.
SPEAKER_02Oh, the troughs are in a bathroom area.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but like I would have to if I get laxative, if like because I'm gonna have to use the restroom.
SPEAKER_02It's only five percent chance.
SPEAKER_04I I just don't like those odds.
SPEAKER_02Like, cumulatively cumulatively, that's just too much. Oh, you ain't never seen a stable full of men shitting before. I have and I don't like it.
SPEAKER_04I'm like, I I feel very vindicated in coming out and saying, you know what? No, I don't like this. Taking a stand. I'm taking a stand and saying, no, I don't prefer to see men having diarrhea in a trough.
SPEAKER_02Even if the vibe is great otherwise?
SPEAKER_04I thought you were gonna say uh great bar, good drinks, everyone knows your name, but there's a bathroom guy. That one would be difficult for me.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I'm gonna need you to narrow down what a bathroom guy is.
SPEAKER_04Do you not have bathroom guys where you where you're out there?
SPEAKER_02And there's just you know it sometimes You mean the guy who like sells cigarettes outside, or the guy inside who like offers you a paper towel when you wash it up. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04The guy who sells cigarettes outside, I don't fucking care. He's outside. The guy holding paper towels, he's in there. A job's a job, but yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02And it's not they're actually like I've never had an experience with an impolite one, but I always feel like an asshole if I don't have singles on me. Yeah. Getting a paper towel, I'm sorry. That's not worth it. Yeah, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_04And like and like I'm sorry if this sounds dramatic, but it honestly sounds like something like a holdover from like some Soviet farce where it's like, you know, we have to have bathroom guys because that's our glorious republic, and we will create we will create jobs for the peasants, and like I will I will probably go to a different bar. Like, and that's that's what makes that a good uh a good, would you rather? Because like even a really nice bar where I get along with everyone and the drinks are very cheap, but it hasn't but it has a bathroom guy, I would still probably not go there so often. Yeah, I mean I would probably are slightly more expensive and nobody is watching me piss.
SPEAKER_02I guess if the bathroom guy like, and this would like suck for him, you know, to like feel like he had to go out of his way to be like, seriously, you don't have to like tip me. I would be much more likely to be like, fuck it, yeah, have a 10. That's all I got, but like here's a 10 for this one paper towel.
SPEAKER_04I have never I've never seen a bathroom guy be like, no tips, sir. I'm just here for the love for the for the passion.
SPEAKER_02No, they I mean they always stand there looking exactly like I feel I would, is just standing there looking kind of tired. Just like all right, man.
SPEAKER_04How about if you give me a tip, I will turn around and plug my ears while you piss.
SPEAKER_02I mean, my my splashes aren't that powerful. Do you ever do like a thing where like um if you're like at somebody's house and like you're you're like pissing, but like, for example, if you're playing like DD or something at like somebody's place and you like really gotta piss, but you don't want to miss too much. So you go in the uh the bathroom and you're like trying to piss so like you your stream doesn't hit the water, um, so you can like hear what's happening, but then after like 15 seconds, you're like, wait, do they think I'm just like not even doing anything in here? And then see you see you get a little bit of splash in the water just to let everybody know you're doing something, and then you cut back just so you can keep listening.
SPEAKER_04It's fucked up, but I actually do know what you mean. Like like because it's awkward, because it's like, oh, is he not like is he trying to be part of the conversation while he's pissing?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it's like just part way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like no, I just but I you know I would like to be informed.
SPEAKER_02Like I don't want to make you guys recap everything.
SPEAKER_04I feel like that's easier to do in just it outside of mixed company, because normally when you're with your with your guys, with your boys, they will usually be like, Oh, I appreciate that. Now I don't have to repeat myself.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, I leave like the door cracked and stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, with all the like women around, like uh, you know, I don't necessarily or like polite company, you're not gonna do that for sure.
unknownNo, I got you.
SPEAKER_04All right, fuck, fuck. What was your last thing? Because I feel like we're fucking losing a lot.
SPEAKER_02My last thing was, and it's kind of a two-parter, which is who was your favorite, and it doesn't have to be assassins. Uh, you know, you can fail bondsman, you could include Ryan Reynolds, but who were your favorites? Hold on, and who are you rooting for for uh to win? And I will let you say Sykes and the other one, but then you gotta give me your second favorite too.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, Sykes and the other one, and uh I mean Sykes and Waters. I'm sorry. I can't believe I can't believe I let you.
SPEAKER_02Well, Sykes is easy because you know.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, no, she is she is definitely the the fucking power hitter of the two.
SPEAKER_02Uh plus your last name.
SPEAKER_04Oh, true, true. I was just saying um second favorite, uh uh not you know what? I actually really did like uh uh Acosta.
SPEAKER_06Interesting.
SPEAKER_04I thought he was very cool in how he kind of could slip from one identity to the other, and like in between it, he had these very weird eccentricities, like telling the super the head of security to be like, oh, you know, go to sleep, go to sleep. And I admit I fucking love his little wrist needle weapon.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the little fucking what's it called? Well, an Assassin's Creed wrist blade almost.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like a little hidden pistoletto it fucking ruled.
SPEAKER_02He also had a gun up his sleeve. Like, what how many fucking things does he have up his sleeves?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, see, he felt like an actual assassin, whereas Laszlo Soot felt more like a fucking like serial killer. Dude, Laszlo Soot was great though. I'll tell you this. Uh I loved Beanie. Uh he was he was uh Buddy Israel's procurer.
SPEAKER_02The big boy?
SPEAKER_04The big boy who got the who got the hose.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And he's awesome. He said, damn, you went from Beyonce to Bigfoot in six hours. Great fucking lines. That dude had so many fucking great lines. And even when he got shot, he turns around and goes like, Oh, you didn't, you motherfucker.
SPEAKER_02He just gets shot again and goes flying.
SPEAKER_04I loved that guy. I loved his performance. I loved his character. Fucking ruled. I would put him as my second favorite, honestly. And I I would put uh Acosta as like third favorite.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04What about you?
SPEAKER_02Um let's see. I gotta give Laszlo Soot my number one just because his disguises gave us more of a reason to see Joel Edgerton in his ludicrous Hugo persona. He had a lot of style, too. Um let's see. Yeah, he had a lot of style. He was clever. He was he actually got the closest to actually pulling it off. Um plus I just like Tommy Flanagan as an actor, even though we didn't get to like see his face that much. But um and he just felt like a kind of unique compared to like a lot of the others who were basically just like, you know, we're gonna try to get up there through you know, whatever means. He was just like, no, I know exactly like I'm gonna impersonate this guy. Ooh, better opportunity. I'm gonna impersonate this guy. And now I'm already up there and preparing my fucking tools to get this fucking, you know. Like he was the other ones were just trying to ice Israel for the most part. He was going in there to like get the motherfucker's heart and he almost pulled it off. Oh, he did.
SPEAKER_04Uh actually, remember at the end they explain everything. Uh the Swede, they keep referencing the Swede.
SPEAKER_02He was the surgeon, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you think the Swede is this uh assassin. You see him walking around with his entourage a lot, but it turns out he's a heart surgeon from Sweden, and he's going to uh do the heart transplant. And uh Laszlo Soot is the guy that officially gets the contract to take out Buddy Israel, and he calls the Swede, remember, and tells him three minutes. Right. Uh so I think Laszlo Soot was not sent there to kill him, but actually just to sedate.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, oh you're right. So he basically pulled it off.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and so he has a syringe, and then at the end he escapes by changing disguises.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. You're right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so like, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He was probably my number one.
SPEAKER_04He he was very cool.
SPEAKER_02My number two was Hollis. He's the only surviving member of Ben Affleck's trio.
SPEAKER_04I like Hollis because even though he had he comes back at the end and whacks uh Darwin. That was pretty great.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Chris Pine, the only survivor of the Tremor Brothers, Darwin, uh kind of runs into him in the parking lot, and the two of them have this like brief conversation. It seems like he's gonna let Darwin go, and then he says, fuck it, and just dumps the guns him down 1911. That shoots him seven times in the back with a 45. Plus looking.
SPEAKER_04Hollis gets that weird fucking uh drug trip where he downs Adderall and fucking gets menaced by a weeb.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he gets like menaced in the bathtub by like a weeb with like uh bandages over one eye and cracked glasses.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, just absolute freak.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely nothing to do with the main plot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, but I mean, just I like this movie indulged itself a lot. No, I fucking loved Hollis.
SPEAKER_02And my third favorite favorites, I guess, were uh Ray Leota and Ryan Reynolds. Most like mostly Ray Leota. Um they were great.
SPEAKER_04Rayleigh was great and his death was like tough. He was he was good in this. He and he definitely sold it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he was neither of us rooted for Jeremy Pivin, his his buddy Israel.
SPEAKER_04I mean, he kind of comes off as a scumbag. Like he's basically basically fucking over everybody.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, but remember, you thought he was gonna be the protagonist at the beginning. How long did it take you to go from that to fuck this guy?
SPEAKER_04Pretty quick. Like, just just just once I realized what he was doing.
SPEAKER_02Like, oh, you're screwing up over like all your friends? These guys are way cooler than you.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Like the minute I realized what his game was. Now, like there's some other characters too. Like, his lawyer is very fun. He's played by the guy who played Booger in uh Revenge of the Nerds.
SPEAKER_02Nice. Now, um, one final question that I just thought up. There is a sequel to this, but I looked into it. It's actually not a sequel, it's a prequel. If you were to make an actual like sequel to this movie, um, what do you think the the setup would be? And it doesn't have to necessarily be with like following up with like Ryan Reynolds, but it should have like a vaguely similar idea and it should involve like some of the same assassins.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02What would you do?
SPEAKER_04I would follow up with Ryan Reynolds. I would have him somehow be the next buddy Israel, like the guy who's at the center of another fucking uh fox hunt, and like new assassins and old assassins come out, and like some of them are government and some of them aren't.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04And like Ryan Reynolds is just trying to like get out of town.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I would love that's what I would do. That's what I would do.
SPEAKER_02Who would you cast as some of the new assassins? Guarmo del Toro.
SPEAKER_04Charles Dance.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_04As like so as like some old uh SAS dude. Yeah, he's a veteran. Oh, I was gonna say like he's just he's just some like very unassuming British dude who like sneak who like just walks up behind you and like stabs you with something he's got tucked in his paper, you know, like nice. Just a real hiding and plain sight guy.
SPEAKER_02I would like Clive Owen as just like a womanizer type like honeypot dude. He just like gets places by just being hot. I could see that. Right. And then it eventually backfires on him and like Michelle Rodriguez throws him out a window or something.
SPEAKER_04That'd be fun. That'd be so fun. Uh what do you want to watch next? Because because this this episode has been going on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Um, well, we have a I'll ask you what uh genre and then I'll pick a picture.
SPEAKER_04Uh we have let's see, we did we just did so this is gun slop, Red Dawn was gun slop, Terminator Salvation was sci-fi slop, and then it was Death Stalker. So I'd say we're due for martial arts slop or sword slop.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Um what do you got on martial arts?
SPEAKER_02Oh, um, it's like actually kind of a good movie, but like uh Big Trouble in Little China. Yeah, let's do that.
SPEAKER_04Fucking Kurt Russell. Uh Will, would you like to see us out with some housekeeping?
SPEAKER_02I would love to. Uh Slop Culture is a podcast hosted by Sam Sykes, that's him, and Will Palmer, that's me.
