Join charlie and chris as they yap about yet another non-horror movie. I know what you're thinking "look at these twats yet again not doing horror on the horror podcast" and you'd be right but if I don't try to keep semi consistent themeing chris would have us all watching dadslop and random bad movies from amazon prime. Besides, death? Kinda spooky. Leeches? Basically vampires. Reminiscing on happier times? Existential nightmare.
If that's not horror I dont know what is
Yeah, as we walk through the uncanny family of death, we shall fear medieval. For I am medieval. I have not known.
SPEAKER_03I read it for this. We'll see if I can keep up. I'm gonna try to read. This is the plan to state it to everybody, including the people listening, uh, is to read all of the books in the Castle Rock saga through from The Body through Needful Things. Even though The Body is a story within a book of short stories. And a lot of them are short stories, but well, you know, we'll see if I can keep up with that. Where uh the plan is to watch this Stand By Me, then PooJo, then I think it's the Dark Half, and then Needful Things this month.
SPEAKER_00And the last one should come out on the first of next month, technically.
SPEAKER_02So was your choice for this movie specifically purely based on it's quite a short book that is set in Castle Rock?
SPEAKER_03Well, it's like the start of the Castle Rock saga, and then it's also it's directed by Rob Reiner, which rest in peace, really grim what happened to him pretty recently.
SPEAKER_02There's a lot of sad you should probably do your intro if we're gonna start yapping about it because there's not much movie to go over. It's a very simple movie. We'll mostly be talking about uh tangential things that imagine.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, well we'll settle on a rest in peace, Rob Reiner, and then we'll we'll launch into welcome to the uncanny valley. Today we're talking about Sand by Me, directed by Rob Reiner, starring Will Wheaton, starring Rest in Peace, River Phoenix. Uh Jerry O'Connell. I served an iced coffee to Jerry O'Connell once. He's pretty chill.
SPEAKER_02Did you get any insider information during this coffee date?
SPEAKER_03He uh he like opened his face and hissed at me with his snake tongue.
SPEAKER_02Was that like his people's version of like a tap? His people's god. Are you okay? See if there was a snake lizard person, like community. I feel like people refer to him as those people because you can't call them humans.
SPEAKER_03I don't want to say those people, like the lizard people at the very least. You know, those people is pretty alienating inherently.
SPEAKER_02I think they're already alienating for splitting their face open and spitting at you.
SPEAKER_05That's true. He did choose to do that on his own.
SPEAKER_02It was a conscious effort on his part.
SPEAKER_05No, that's true.
SPEAKER_03He he actually dropped dead three days later.
SPEAKER_02I'm imagining see the little lizard guy from Jurassic Park, the one that everyone loves, even though it's like it could easily have been cut out of that film and it wouldn't make a difference to the plot.
SPEAKER_03The one from the new ones, or the very first tiny baby lizard in the first one, the little one goes and really, really doesn't like that guy for some reason. Oh, the the one that kills the Australian guy.
SPEAKER_10It's been so long since I've watched Jurassic Park.
SPEAKER_05Uh okay.
SPEAKER_03I feel like we saw Jurassic Park a lot in the show, man. Uh, I did want to mention also starring Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, and they have John Cusack play, and Richard Dreyfus is in it. Uh John Cusack plays the deceased brother of I think it's Will Eaton and Gordy.
SPEAKER_02It's so funny that he shows up in this. Because Stephen King's recurring actor in 1408. Um, I did not expect him to be in this movie whatsoever.
SPEAKER_05No, me neither. I was shocked.
SPEAKER_02And like he doesn't fit. It's so weird. John Cusack as a human has always looked like 37 and has never not looked 37.
SPEAKER_03Have you noticed but in this he looks like a 37-year-old, very well-maintained lesbian? You know, and then he starts looking like a 37-year-old man.
SPEAKER_02So, Chris, why was the choice of this movie purely for Castle Rock reasoning, or was it more you just wanted to talk? Because this is like if you could have talked about any Stephen King movie for a horror show, you've chose quite possibly the worst one as the first one.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, I did want to talk about one of the differences in the book. There is at least like a horror moment at the very, very end. But anyway. Yeah, it's not the best. The rest of them will fit much better. This one specifically is just convenience. But it's also it's a popular movie. It's a famous movie. It's uh like you said, everyone likes it. There's a lot of notable actors very young in it. Uh it's strange, but amount of I did research on different Stephen King stuff. I didn't feel like we should do the Dark Tower or I didn't want to do it month. We could do it month, you know, if you wanted to.
SPEAKER_02The reason you wouldn't want to do it is because you would have to read the length of the book of it.
SPEAKER_03I have it. I'm good at dude. It is like 1100 pages. Needful things is like 850.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but needful things will be new information to you. Take it as someone who went, I'm enjoying Stephen King, I will read it. See, once you've seen the beginning of it twice already, and then you're reading, oh Georgie, it was playing in the rain, you go, okay, fuck it, I get it, I get it. So you read like a hundred pages of his little twat called Georgie playing in the storm, because there's no tension, because you know it's about to happen, so you're just going through the motions.
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_04I think reading it, there's a lot of stuff in the book that's not in the movies mostly, mostly for the better.
SPEAKER_03But that's what I mean about watching it is I think just like there are things that the original does better, but it also is like it feels like a soap opera from the 90s. Uh then the second one is like two movies in itself. The second new one. The first one is decent, but I feel like I've only seen that one in theaters. I feel like it wouldn't play as well on a TV. It was a good theater movie.
SPEAKER_02I think this is an at chapter two you're you're talking about?
SPEAKER_03No, it chapter one, um I just talked about it chapter two is like two movies in itself. I liked it chapter two, but I watched it at home and it was not you know, I wasn't stressed to get through it.
SPEAKER_02Um okay, if we're going through it, if we're about if we're jumping.
SPEAKER_03So you keep telling me I look like that fucking guy.
SPEAKER_02You do look like that fucking guy. What's his name? Ben? Is it Ben?
SPEAKER_04I think so.
SPEAKER_02Everything he's in, if I see him and stuff, I'm like, dude, that's fucking that's just you. It's you, but slow. He's not that swole anymore, so it's just becoming you. He's just becoming great.
SPEAKER_06We'll just become a person at some point.
SPEAKER_02Have you like set this all up to eventually cover it? And we're like, yo, by the way, I've got I've held a surprise for this long.
SPEAKER_05I am that guy.
SPEAKER_02That Batman. That man knows and loves. You probably should consider I always reference them to you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're it would be like respectful of me at this point to know his name.
SPEAKER_02And you know, it's it's like out of most actors that someone could go, you look like there's plenty worse actors.
SPEAKER_05Oh, absolutely. It's a compliment, if anything. Let's see.
SPEAKER_02He's not like in top ten of the billing list, hold on, give me a second.
SPEAKER_03J. Ryan.
SPEAKER_02Jay Ryan.
SPEAKER_04He does not have a notable name.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, such a dude, bro. Name, no wonder I don't he doesn't even look like a J. I think because when I see him now, I go, that looks like a Chris.
SPEAKER_06He's very handsome.
SPEAKER_02Mild, mild quick rundown of all the it's since you give your thoughts. The TV movie enjoyable, but I think actually pretty bad, and people completely overrate it. It chapter one, also overrated, but a good movie. It chapter two, fun to be had, but also a bad movie. Welcome to Derry, good episodes and a terrible show.
SPEAKER_03I really like the first episode, but I had a friend who said don't watch past that.
SPEAKER_00They recommended I watch that first episode, but not anything else.
SPEAKER_02No, see the thing is with Welcome to Derry, okay. You get episode one and it's a banger, and you get episode two, you're like, This is a bit shaky, but it's got some setup, but see the shaking that foundation, it crumbles the show as it goes along. And then episode seven, for whatever reason, they were like, we're we're pulling out the bag with this one. This is what's gonna be the banger episode.
SPEAKER_10Like this is the standout easily, and then the end is pretty fucking dog shit. It looks cool, but it's dog shit.
SPEAKER_02The end episode is like I can't, it's like imagine if you got the Milo Pony Raiders to finish an it script.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it's just like chintzy and hopeful in a battle.
SPEAKER_02No, it's more like generic friendship is magic. Uh we got the power gorillas type vibe.
SPEAKER_03Well, I'd say if anyone likes like uh a situation where something really shifts up what you think the plot is gonna be, or say what the cast of something might be.
SPEAKER_00Watch just the first episode of Welcome to Daryl, you'll be pretty pleased.
SPEAKER_02Anyway, how are we going to talk about this movie? Because in this movie, plot wise, it's a five-minute summary, Chris. You've you've doomed us, because how the fuck are we supposed to talk about a movie that essentially could be brought down to two sentences?
SPEAKER_03Well, before anything, but we'll start with uh we're just seeing Gordy's home life. So Gordy has lost his brother recently, and his brother, I don't remember his brother's played by a John K-Zach. He died in an accident. Uh we are seeing his home life where his parents are checked the fuck out, and he is trying to get his mom's attention. I guess context that's needed is that they have his brother's room, they haven't touched it. I think he died four or five months ago. And he's asking for something that turns out to be in his brother's room, and he's yelling to his mom who is putting up clothing. Mom, where's where's my lamp? I don't remember what he's looking for, it doesn't matter. And his dad, who his mom is not facing him, she's doing something. His dad is closer to him and facing him and answers him. His mom is ignoring him, but also why is he yelling to his mom? His dad is right there.
SPEAKER_07Stop bothering your mom. You know?
SPEAKER_02And see the thing is just it really weirds me about this scene because I get it's not the point of the scene. Okay, it's supposed to show that his family life is in turmoil because of this tragedy happened, and now they're not as close, so he has to rely on his friends as support. Okay, but why is this thing that he seems to use quite regularly in this room, but apparently he's not been in for five months?
SPEAKER_05I don't know. It's such a good question. Like what ghost put it in here?
SPEAKER_02It's like his mum or his dad put it in the room to rage bait him.
SPEAKER_03And there's something he does later in the movie, which is a change from we'll get to it later, but there's a a decision or an action he makes that is a change from the story, which there are very few of. Even the voiceover and a lot of the dialogue is the same in the story. There's a decision he makes later that feels against a character who wouldn't just peek into his brother's room. And it I guess it's sort of validated because once he goes in there, he he does have sort of a PTSD flashback of his brother. And his dad, in a real dickhead way, yells at him to get out of there. Uh, but he's very meek, is is my point, his character.
SPEAKER_02But would you expect anything different from Stephen King uh parents?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02I don't think Batman has ever written a happy family life in his entire writing career.
SPEAKER_03Everyone has horrible parents, and they're friends with the only nice kids in town, and the rest of the kids have knives and are really angry at you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's always the setup, it's always okay. You get your main character, and he'll be preteens, mid-teens, going through that time period. Parents are assholes, usually a group of about two to five people, and they're all the funny personality kids. There's always a nerd, and there's always the kind of stuck-up asshole one that they kind of like and they keep around. And they go to a high school with older bullies that all dress like greasers, and are definitely the ones that in real life would have been bullied. Um to be fair, when you see your friend group, if you think back to like that moment, there was always the fucking nerd, and there was always the asshole of the group, and I wonder why that is such a shared group amongst human beings. Do you think we naturally try and balance our personalities out with like the people surrounding us?
SPEAKER_03Well, for me, if there was another nerd in my friend group, I would kill him.
SPEAKER_02Oh what for pure dominance?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I can't speak for other friend groups, but that's what would happen in mine.
SPEAKER_02So out of this group, I were reclassifying uh Corey Fieldman as the nerd.
SPEAKER_03He is, but he's I like his character because I do like the way they're presented in this and the way they're acted, because it's sort of like uh he's the nerd, but I think it's Vern, Jerry O'Connell, the uh the fat kid is also sort of the nerd, and then but but Vern's just an idiot. I feel like I don't know, he's not just a nerd because he wants to fucking play chicken with a train, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's good, but reasoning for being a little bit unstable, but I guess we'll talk about later on. But that's it's kind of a cool thing with the main four because like you get Joe, uh no, it's Chris, isn't it? Uh Rather Phoenix, which is the kind of he's like he seems slightly older tough ones.
SPEAKER_00And we learned right at the start of the movie that he's just died recently before this story is being written, which I guess is the reason the story is being written.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but as I was gonna say, with the the friend dynamic, typically in the propes of these characters, Chris River Phoenix's character would just kind of be the asshole, and maybe he would have some insecurities that he needs to work through. But aside from that, he would be the one that is struggling with himself and is projecting that outwards, and that they flip it so he is he has that aspect of his personality, but he uses it in a way to support and push up his friends, and the tough exterior is more just how he copes with it. So it's a good twist on him.
SPEAKER_03You get it is it's a really good performance, like the writing is great, but he's killing it playing this character.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and man had it since like day one that he was smoking this shit as a child. And Teddy, the nerd, like we said, yeah, he's a nerd, but he's also the fucking nut job of the group. Which typically that isn't the two tropes that go together.
SPEAKER_03No, usually that's the the mean guy. He's like a nut job, and then he winds up using that for a positive you know, like a sacrifice or something selfless.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so he's got the flap from the stereotype Ern. I don't really know what you would I could say maybe that usually the bigger kid is typically the bully of the group. He's just kind of chill, man.
SPEAKER_03He's just the no no no. He's so we've supplanted one of the four normal archetypes with a standard archetype from every Stephen King story, which is Stephen King.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, that's that's true.
SPEAKER_03Everyone's telling him that he's uh such a writer from birth. That's that's Jordan. Wait, Vern is uh oh right, Vern is the overweight kid.
SPEAKER_02Vern is the overweight kid. Jordy is Stephen King writing about how he thought he could never do it as a writer, but all his friends were like, You're so good, though. You can just put your heart into it.
SPEAKER_05Jesus. Uh I love Stephen King, but it it's annoying how much he does that.
SPEAKER_02Uh always in these tropes, when a character that is him writes, the ending is always like the climactic moment. I don't know if it's like him feeling cagey about no one liking the endings of his books.
SPEAKER_03They say that to him, yeah. Like a character says to him, like, yeah, you don't have to write an ending, or he's telling a story at some point, and they're like, That's it? And he tries to attack an ending on, and they go, That's not a good ending.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but see that scene, I don't see that as them going, Steven. Is it the same in the book as it is in this film?
SPEAKER_03Like that. I don't I'll look that up while we're talking. I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_02Okay, because as it's accurate, which I go I have to take because I haven't read the book. I don't see that as Stephen King going, Oh, people don't like my endings. I see him as him going, you are complaining about the ending of the narrative, and any suggestion you've tried to give me has been immediately worse. So actually, you guys are all wrong.
SPEAKER_06Is that what they do?
SPEAKER_02They're all like um well. Uh it's after the bridge, and we're having like a little a little uh camping night together.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, they have to have their fucking after-action cigarette. Right, right. Yeah. I don't know what to think about that. Because even if they're stage cigarettes, they're still smoking something.
SPEAKER_02You think that was on the casting call for them, though? They're like 10 years old, must be addicted to nicotine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, already addicted.
SPEAKER_02Like do you think like behind set you see them on their little casting chairs, like pulling out a deck? Oh hard shift today. You see, I almost got hit by a fucking train.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh my god. And to be fair, almost getting hit by a train, you deserve a cigarette.
SPEAKER_02You do it is uh I would be jewel smoking at that point. I used to do that when I was more stressed in life. Must be an incredible feeling though.
SPEAKER_06Like, I did that once with joints.
SPEAKER_02No, what you do is you R I D I don't remember anything. I take it as a pretty typical. I don't know if it's just a junky thing that we do here to like try and stretch out how much weed they've got, but you do like uh uh a joint of like 80% tobacco and 20% weed.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that sounds horrible. I can do a a light split, like with a little bit of a sprinkle of tobacco. Like when my friends have rolled slips, they will take a cigarette and just sort of roll the tip of it over.
SPEAKER_02I was thinking what you could do is you could synergize it and you make a square of two joints at the diagonal and then two cigarettes at the other diagonal.
SPEAKER_06I guess so.
SPEAKER_03It's not gonna entirely follow.
SPEAKER_02No, you you don't you don't you don't get it, man.
SPEAKER_05No, you don't get it, and I'm okay with that.
SPEAKER_02I will say, Verne, if we're talking about the flip of the character dynamic, he's painted as the dumbass, he's easily the smartest one of this group because he's the only one that win sure the burying the pennies under his. House was dude, he's a dog, he's acting like a dog. Yes, that's stupid. Okay, but spy mode, all right? He gets information. He knows to listen out because he might get something good out of it. And he's the one that whilst telling the boys goes, Yeah, I don't think making like a two-day journey to go poke at a corpse that was illegally found earlier is a good idea. You peer pressure him into that. Would I peer pressure him into that? I don't know, would you? I never said you would have, but I mean, if it's on your mind.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I don't want to answer that. I don't want to answer that. Never mind. Uh no.
SPEAKER_03No, I would not.
SPEAKER_02Chris, do you think?
SPEAKER_03Sorry, what did you ask? I I was I just found where uh the story is, where he tells the story of the game fire. But repeat the end of your question. Nah, I'm doing my best to do two things at once, which means I I am 50% ignoring you. But the other 50% is very heartfelt.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well, what was I saying about Fern? We can move on. Exactly, exactly. Okay. My point, thank you for listening. Was that for him being the dumbass character, he's the s he makes the smartest decisions out of the group. He's the only one that in all these situations was like, Yeah guys, maybe we should not do this.
SPEAKER_04That's true.
SPEAKER_02Do you think in your age, say 12, 13, could your friends convince you to do like a two-day hiking trip across train tracks that are still active to find a body?
SPEAKER_07Uh yes, but I wouldn't walk on the tracks.
SPEAKER_02But you would have done the the like the 12 mile walk around the tracks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it sounds kind of funny.
SPEAKER_02The way I would see it, okay, in this situation, I would go, okay, if we know the trains run on a schedule, trains can't run too close to each other. So what I would have done, okay, I get we're not at the train track, but if we're talking about it, what I would have done rather than do a 12-mile walk is I would have waited for a train to go past and then I would have walked.
SPEAKER_09And it seems like out of these four trains, yeah, really.
SPEAKER_03The bridge scene is so annoying because they just go well, I think a train passed recently.
SPEAKER_02And the fucking woods? Would you not have heard the train? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think in the story when they mention it, they say that they know that a train passed recently. But even so, even if a train passed two minutes ago, why not give yourself an extra two minutes and just wait for the next one? Sit down for 20 minutes, rest your legs.
SPEAKER_02Okay, but the thing is, how much can you criticize that, considering it definitely does happen sometimes in America? You guys have those big ass train bridges. I've heard stories. I feel like for the most part, usually that's inebriate and in neat in neat. And Chris, you know this word. Help me here. Inebriated. Thank you. It's usually uh those individuals or the walker was there under mysterious circumstances. Not accusatory, but good good chance if someone was found on one of those bridges, there was a fishy situation around it.
SPEAKER_03Ritual stuff.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm not t there was a Wendigoon video of boys, uh two young boys found on a train track, and it went into like like the police in the town nearby were like hauling drugs, and it was like there was like corruption up to like um I think it was almost presidential level.
SPEAKER_04I figured it was like an empty man situation.
SPEAKER_02What a love crafting Woodman.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that convinced the kids to go to the bridge.
SPEAKER_02What a bad movie that was. I don't get the hype for that movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh, we're gonna do that at some point. I like it.
SPEAKER_02I just found it nonsensical, and everyone's like, it's love crafting because you don't understand it. It's like I don't understand it because it's badly written. It's it's well, I don't want to spoil what it's about, but it's about like a specific okay, okay. Small, small detour to this. Your love crafting element of you cannot comprehend it cannot be you haven't comprehended it yet because I haven't given you the information until the end of the movie. That's not Lovecrafting, but you just didn't tell me shit. I guess it's withholding information, that's different.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna make you watch it again and we'll talk about it. Okay, okay, we'll circle back to that.
SPEAKER_02I watched it with friends before, so this isn't even like uh I'd be a miserable bastard by myself. No one I know likes this out.
SPEAKER_03Uh there is a movie I've recommended to you within the past four months that I I didn't really mention that it has a Lovecraftian element, but it's there's a slight reference that I think you'd appreciate more than I did.
SPEAKER_05Or should I mention which one it is.
SPEAKER_02Interesting. Okay, we'll do we'll get back to the plot of this film because we're we're not talking about this film.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. Let me mention he does not tell the same story that they joke about the ending in the book. He just tells a story about Lidio. Lidio is a soldier he invented who had a lot of adventures in the Second World War. It wasn't a very good one, the story. And when it ended as the Lidio's stories usually did, with a single American soldier coughing out a dying promise of his love for America and for a girl back home. It was not his face I saw in my mind's eye, but the face of a much younger boy, already dead, his eyes closed, blood running from the left corner of his mouth. And behind him, instead of a war-scarred France, I only saw dark forest and the railway tracks dark at the top of a bank against the starry sky.
SPEAKER_02For being 12, a man fucking cooked on that freestyle. See if he whipped it out of his ass in the middle of a walk, I'd be like, God damn. I I would question maybe the the protagonist's last breath being America. But maybe remove that part. But aside from that, yeah, that's pretty good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, very true.
SPEAKER_02But okay, so Vern, he comes up to the boys and he's like, Hey, I heard I heard this plot, my older brother, I think it is, or like my older brother's friends or something. Oh the older kids in this, I don't remember how any of them are related to anyone. I don't think it's just you just need to know or some greasers and their typical bad boys. We've got cut-off sleeves, where they're driving around with baseball bats, where they're a bunch of uh hooligans.
SPEAKER_03I think just one of the random guys is related to Vern. That's the only, and that's how Vern hears about the dead body. He's hiding under the porch looking for his fucking porch pennies.
SPEAKER_02I don't think they big God of quarters, that was worth a lot of money back in those days.
SPEAKER_03They don't I don't think they mention it in the movie, but what happened, what they say in the story is that his brother found out about it and dug them all up already.
SPEAKER_10That's so funny.
SPEAKER_05So he's looking for nothing.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, Chris, that makes so much sense because at the end of the movie he goes, Oh, you were under that fucking porch. That's why he knows why he knows.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Like, why would he even think that anyone would be under the porch?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then it's his fault that his brother knows that he did that, so it comes back to him. Come on, Rob, what were you doing? Keep that in the movie. All right, but Vern.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that would have been that would have been a good thing. I there's something else later that I wish was uh put in, but you know, who knows? It's a pretty short movie, maybe they cut out a scene.
SPEAKER_02But Vern's to the boys is like, okay, we've got I know where a body is. It's about fucking 80 kilometers away. And that's the end of the story. So very little, well, we have to go fucking see it. You dip shit.
SPEAKER_04And since we're kids, we have tiny little legs.
SPEAKER_02And they're plan yeah, but kids have fucking stamina. You seen kids go running?
SPEAKER_03Uh no, but that's that's a fair point. They don't really know when they're tired.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, so first off, stupid to tell them if you don't plan on going. Second off, stupid for them to want to go, but they they get ready to go. Rover Felix, Chris, uh brings uh a gun. He's a loaded pistol. Crazy, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And he left it loaded when he handed it to his friend and specifically didn't tell him it was a prank.
SPEAKER_02Very strange that like I get his dad's an alcoholic, but would lose a full gun. That expensive.
SPEAKER_03It's true. I mean he probably just forgot. I don't know. He he said he took he knew where his dad puts it, right? So it was in the right place.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but okay, so they're they're prepped, they're making their way. Their plan is to become heroes for finding a corpse.
SPEAKER_06Don't yeah, heroes is something cool.
SPEAKER_02The correlation is a bit strange, so they're all they're all walking, they've got their pants, we're gonna say pants for for the American listeners, they've got their pants up very high, like belly button level, but chafe is gonna be horrendous midway through the journey.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, six hours into day one, we hit the would you call this a junkyard? A scrapyard? Is there a difference?
SPEAKER_03Junkyard is what I was thinking. I think a scrapyard would have more fucking full cars and appliances in it. This is more random springs and stuff. This is a very movie junkyard too. I don't even know if there's anything if this is what a real junkyard would look like.
SPEAKER_02Uh I thought you would okay, because we don't but really have those. We have dumps. Is there a difference between a junk and a scrapyard? Is it a scrapyard more for the selling and junk is more for dumping?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I'll be so honest. I don't really deal with that since I live in New York City.
SPEAKER_02I don't feel it's a very American thing. You've been yapping about like old American vague before. I feel like that would just be ingrained in I would imagine a scrapyard.
SPEAKER_03Here's my guess. A scrapyard is like a guy who goes to the dump and with a big truck and goes, hmm, I could sell this. And then he throws it all in his yard, and then people come by and go, I'll pay you for that. And he goes, I knew you would.
SPEAKER_02Oh shit, so American Pickers.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I guess so. That's what I that's my guess.
SPEAKER_02Is American Pickers just called pickers?
SPEAKER_03I don't know what that is, really, beyond it being like people that get picks. You know, but beyond the basic concept of the show. I don't know about that as a real-world thing.
SPEAKER_02Dude, here American Pickers is a show where people drive about to like usually like not doing very mentally well, old people's house that is just full of shit, like hoarding shit, and they go, Yo, that's a vintage Coca-Cola sign. I'll give you I'll buy it for 20 bucks, and they go, Yeah, sure. And then they sell it in their store for like 80 bucks.
SPEAKER_03I used to watch a lot of pawn stars with my uncle Babe.
SPEAKER_02You you and you and your Uncle Dave, big fan of porn. Yeah, we love porn. See, I try and watch that show, but I feel like it's too scripted. Like, I can't. Some some of the shit that they put up with, I'm just like, you would just as a business, you would not take that.
SPEAKER_03That's fair. I don't know if I would be as into it now, but when I watched it, I was really enjoying it. I don't think I could watch it on my own. But like watching it with people and going, nah, I wouldn't take that one. I did that, I did that with my ex's dad once. We won the only time I interacted with my ex's dad was picking him up from the airport. And then when she wasn't when she was at work, we watched deal or no deal, and people would pick stuff, and we were both going, no, I wouldn't pick that one.
SPEAKER_02Well, for some reason, cause like we're on an American vet, imagine both of us in like a tweed shirt on like rocking chairs with some uh glass bottles of beer next to you, going, yep. No, on a couch. I wish we had beer. I feel like that's always the thing in Stephen King the book. See people's friendship, it's over sitting next to each other with some beer.
SPEAKER_05Always. Because he grew up where you don't do anything. He grew up middle of nowhere.
SPEAKER_02Where is it because you've got more king knowledge of me? Where is it King grew up in?
SPEAKER_07I assume Maine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03How did you guess?
SPEAKER_02He never talked about it's like is the running theme of every book is Maine and alcoholism, and both both seem to stick with him.
SPEAKER_03I think in Bangor, Maine, but I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_02Interesting, what books there's books far from there, isn't there?
SPEAKER_03Maybe that's why I'm not sure, is because there's so many places in Maine that he has also invented, but um I'm dubious about it.
SPEAKER_02The I want to say the more the road that leads to the motorway that Pet Cemetery is set on, maybe connected to there. It's also connected to Salem's lot that I doubt is a real place in Maine. Oh, okay. Durham in Maine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Back in the day when you're naming towns, you wouldn't call it Salem's Lot. I feel like people would attack you for like wizardry.
SPEAKER_01No one would settle there.
SPEAKER_02I don't think it's called Salem's Lot in the book, actually. Hold on. I might have fucked up. I think it's called something else's lot. And then Salem's Lot is the title of the book.
SPEAKER_05Yelzebub's Lot.
SPEAKER_02Lucifer's Lot.
SPEAKER_10Lucifer's Lot. Lucifer's Lot sounds like a sat casino name.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's a great one. What would that be? That's like a strip club?
SPEAKER_04Yelzebub. Dalesabub's bubbles.
SPEAKER_02I can't think of any business to begin with.
SPEAKER_03Wait, wait, wait, wait. Um, um uh a health themed cocktail bar, but uh where uh your hostess and host are dressed as Wolverine, Balza Bubs.
SPEAKER_02The the closest I could get for the bar one was um I'm a hard and it's gone now. This is what I get for for record something with Abaddon and it's lost it now. It's gone. We give up on that one, we give up on that one.
SPEAKER_04Okay, but the boys I sliced it out of your head with Balza Bubs.
SPEAKER_02Crush, the boys are at the junkyard or the scrapyard, whatever one it is. Okay, and they're fucking about and they're we're they're they're playing with their water bottles and they still uh the story of the man that supposedly lives there that has an attack dog that is trained on sick balls, the classic Eric Hartman Scott Tenerman move. Why are they hanging out in the junkyard if they think there's a dog that might rip off their balls?
SPEAKER_03Maybe they don't believe it's real because they've never seen it.
SPEAKER_09Are you you you risking your balls in this situation?
SPEAKER_03And they all sniper anything about sick balls, but they're all saying it. So they're already thinking about that.
SPEAKER_02Sick balls, I would argue infinitely worse than a ball snapper or a ball cutter. I would take that over the the dog that rips him. Are you ever heard of uh Larry the the Pinar Snatcher?
SPEAKER_03No, I've not heard of maybe from you once before. Maybe in like our Thanksgiving episode, you told me about Larry P.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay, but in a situation like that, say I didn't repost that TikTok and at 2 a.m. Larry the Pinor Snatcher came into my room. At least to me, that's like uh that would be like a mystical castration. That's something that I feel would result in worse uh less trauma to me than there's a madman around here that has uh uh an Akita or a Labrador that tears your balls off on command. My god, mystical castration has been over the raw junkier dog castration any day.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I guess so. Yeah, it looks like a sweet dog though. Who even knows if it would castrate you?
SPEAKER_02It was uh it seemed like see those dogs that are trained to be scary, but they're actually just big babies.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Definitely one of those.
SPEAKER_09But yeah, the the man shows up and in the book is sick balls a real thing?
SPEAKER_05I think so. I'm gonna look balls up.
SPEAKER_03This guy is bullying these kids.
SPEAKER_02Like, it's googling balls live in the stream.
SPEAKER_07Well, no, I have a PDF. No, they don't say balls.
SPEAKER_02We don't say balls?
SPEAKER_03They don't say balls. Let me find the junkyard. That one that's a very such a short story that I can just look up.
SPEAKER_02Were you scanning for balls?
SPEAKER_03It is a dump, by the way.
SPEAKER_02It is a dump. Does a dump in a junkyard or a scrapyard that doesn't aid me in any way, shape, or form, Chris?
SPEAKER_10I don't know. Okay. Thanks for that beautiful insight. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But that is when so the boys haul ass, they're like, I am not having my balls sicked. We learn from the narration that the dog, whilst yes, does sick, it does not, in fact, sick balls. The boys would merely get mauled to death rather than uh bleed out from the removal of their testicles in this field. Still not a great like they play it as a joke. A child getting mauled by a dog is still a nasty way to go out.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02The kids also also a fun little like a little teaser of what Stephen King was gonna do next with Castle Rock.
SPEAKER_03That's true, yeah, with Kujo.
SPEAKER_02I can't remember if any balls do get I'm gonna say sucked, but you can't say sucked. That's not a big thing.
SPEAKER_03I would hope not, because I think it's about a mom and her son, right? Because then it would be a a kid's balls.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't know. Kudjo does not, in fact, sick of kids' balls in Kudjo, I can tell you that for a fact.
SPEAKER_03No there is an annoying amount of kids' balls stuff in this movie, in this movie.
SPEAKER_02There's a strange amount of kids' balls stuff in this podcast, so we'll have to move on quick.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's great.
SPEAKER_02Kudo is from the latter half is mostly about uh a child in a woman. There is a lot, it's very male-centric in the first half of the book, and you will get very bored. There is a whole side plot about um a serial marketing company, it will take up about 300 pages of the book, and you will be going insane anytime it comes back. Not not important to the narrative at all. I digress. This is when we get uh Corey Fellman's backstory. Apparently, his dad is also abusive. Who would have thought?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, his ear is fucked up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, his dad burned it off with a stove and also somehow failed to do that properly because he still has most of his ear. His eyes are fucked just because that's not like an alcoholic issue.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, he just hasn't fucked.
SPEAKER_02I'm watching this movie and these it was children's trip. Atrocious. Absolutely. It's like a kind of hot pink, mauve pink, and a reddish pink with grey stripes jumper. It would be our protagonist's main colour scheme. Actually a fair through the human eye.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if I'd hated it that much, but like sauceless, I would say.
SPEAKER_02Anti-sauce? It sucks the sauce out of the room. Because like Rover Phoenix's character, he's he's just went for casual. He's got a white shirt, okay, and blue jeans. You can't criticize it, you can't compliment it, it is what it is. And then he's got his best friend who's just fucking his whole shit up. Like if my friend came out wearing that, I would tell them go home because I'm not being seen in public with you wearing that.
SPEAKER_03That's crazy.
SPEAKER_02It's not even the pink. A guy can wear a pink, I'm final in gender norms, but it would it needs to be it needs to be uh suitable for public observation. If I I would be happier if my friend came out not wearing a shirt whatsoever. I'd be like, that's strange. Yeah, see my friend threw up ass naked, it would be better in the scenario of my friend showing up in that fuck ass shot. There's at least one I can go, okay. He's having um some issues right now, and this is something that needs to be checked. That's just wrong.
SPEAKER_06I don't know. I don't know if I hate it at that.
SPEAKER_02You you you need to you need to you need someone in your life to talk to you about fashion because they would they would be they would be teaching you. Okay.
SPEAKER_06This is this is okay.
SPEAKER_02But we have the train track or the bridge or yeah, no, this is when they're walking, and then uh uh while waiting. I'm just gonna keep calling them by the actors' names because Casless is stacked and I can't not see them as who they are. He's like, you know what? Maybe I should have died instead of my brother, and maybe I'm a shit right here. Again, not only just the shot you see this emo cunt, man fucking up the whole vibe. This is a boys' road trip, everyone else is having a good old time. The other kid just had a traumatic experience getting PTSD flashbacks, but his dad gave him 10 minutes, he was back in action. He wasn't fucking up the vibes. This kid, full journey, ruins the vibes for everyone. Yeah, he's gotta have a conversation without either talking about some cunt eating pies and then not ending the story or just being depressed.
SPEAKER_03His fucking his tact is horrible telling a story about a guy they named Lardass when he has an overweight friend.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and just be fair, his friend isn't that overweight, he's just not like he's just kid overweight. It's not even like Rover Phoenix is about the same weight of him, he's just like a child with a bit of muscle, so he kind of gets away with it more.
SPEAKER_07I I guess that's true.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I've always heard that Jerry O'Connell is the fat kid on standby. So that's just how I think about him now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but okay, when's this movie set for?
SPEAKER_03Oh, so long ago. No, he's not fat. I told you I served him an ice coffee. He was fit as a fiddle now. He was wearing a nice suit.
SPEAKER_02Trauma from what was going on in this coffee deck, Chris? Are you getting more into this here?
SPEAKER_04Well no, it's just a coffee of famous people. A spatless copy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but that was that was your show of endearment.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, it was like in mid summer. I was casting a spell.
SPEAKER_02Anyway, uh our boy River Phoenix, he's like, you know what, you're I'm gonna give you the motivational speeches. Like, I'm also 12, but I guess I'm being the parents to all you fucking idiots.
SPEAKER_03So stupid what he says later. That's not your responsibility, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I also feel it's novice kids. Like, I get that he doesn't really have any parental figures, so he grew up faster than the rest of them, so he shows more maturity and he's able to help his kids. But also, what a fucking downer man having to look after your free friends, even drunk free friends, just free friends that are dumbasses.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, having a play dad.
SPEAKER_02But they arrive at the tracks, Chris. You were one you were one to cut in here.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the tracks is a fun sequence. It's kind of the only notable thing in the story before the ending. You know, like you said, it's not a very dense story, but it's a fun. It is fucking frustrating, but they are kids, so it's fine. But that they don't just wait for a train to pass and then go. Because they do almost die. And as they're almost getting hit by the train, I have a feeling that I can only have this like a 30-year-old man where I'm going, these fucking idiot kids, this wasn't worth it. Now there's what three kids are gonna get killed by a train.
SPEAKER_02It would have been a rather duller ending of um Corey Feldman and Rover Phoenix survive, and then these two just eat shit halfway through the movie.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, it would be, yeah. I was expecting something more grim to happen, like one of the bullies to die accidentally, even, because it's a Stephen King story.
SPEAKER_02Um I'll I'll put a pin on that for a future discussion. But about the grimness of Stephen King's books. We'll circle back to that uh uh a later point in a few weeks. But see the thing is, see these kids, okay. All of them would have survived. Aside from Fern. Fern almost gets two of them killed. Attention is only here because Vern refuses to just walk on the tracks like a normal human being.
SPEAKER_03That's so stupid. Yeah, I don't he doesn't do that in the book as far as I remember.
SPEAKER_02And okay, Ru think about being this age. See if your friend did that in the track, would you not instantly boot him straight in the ass until he stood up?
SPEAKER_03I would at the very least walk past him.
SPEAKER_10You would fucking leave his ass.
SPEAKER_03I would yell at him as I'm leaving, but yeah, probably.
SPEAKER_10You've got it, Fern. Keep going.
SPEAKER_03You got this. Oh no.
SPEAKER_02Leaving his ass.
SPEAKER_03Did you guys bring cups to get the rest of Vern?
SPEAKER_02What about the rest of Vern?
SPEAKER_03Did you guys bring cups and jars, some Tupperware, so we can pick up Vern and bring him home?
SPEAKER_02Oh no, he's over the river, so you see when Satrain hits. Oh yeah. That's for that's him going back to nature.
SPEAKER_04That's for the fish.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's the beautiful circle of life. Vern.
SPEAKER_03A point against you're saying that Vern is the smartest. They give Vern a gun later, and I'm thinking, why'd you give him a gun? What he's like playing James Bond. He's so nervous, he's looking around in the woods aiming it. He's accidentally aiming it at his friends. Why'd you give Vern a gun?
SPEAKER_02Okay, but uh Will Wheaton's character earlier shot it in the middle of a small town.
SPEAKER_04True, but he didn't know it was loaded.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but also if someone gives you a gun, the first thing you go is, hey, I'm gonna check if there's bullets in here before you pull the trigger.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, and the first and most important rule of gun safety is a gun is always loaded, but yeah, he's what, 12?
SPEAKER_02I thought the first rule was to always look down the barrel to check if there's a bullet inside of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and um because uh the firing pin, you know, puts a little spark, you want to pull the trigger so it'll help you see down the bit.
SPEAKER_02It lets some light in through the top I hear. Because then you can get like a little reflection if you like shake it about whilst looking down.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, because you can you can pull the slide back on your own, but it if it's the right model of gun, it'll just slide back on its own after you buy it.
SPEAKER_02I find that very funny that that's one of the first rules, because it implies that a lot of people have done that whilst also holding the trigger backwards whilst looking down, and that has caused accidents.
SPEAKER_03The rule is more about your friends and like people around you, and I think there is something also noted about you know, you're not just pointing a gun where you're pointing it, you're pointing it at everything behind that, also. It's just about guns are dangerous, basically.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I still that but that's still a thing that people go. Like, don't look down the barrel of your own gun. It's like, yeah, but also you should be in control enough to know if your gun's about to go off. Like the barrel shouldn't even be an issue. First, you should know if it's about to fire.
SPEAKER_03You can have uh like a jittery trigger assembly or something wrong with your loading mechanism to where it just misfires also while you're looking down the chamber.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, but if you're gonna be able to do it.
SPEAKER_03Especially if someone drops the butt of a rifle or a shotgun on the floor as they're looking down it.
SPEAKER_02Chris, if your gun's about to randomly misfire, I think whatever you do for gun safety is kind of out of control anyway. If you don't have control over when that's about to blow, it kind of whatever they're doing that has caused them to neglect their gun cleanliness is also why they're looking down the fucking barrel of their gun.
SPEAKER_03So if they were cleaning their gun regularly and checking all the parts, it would that wouldn't have happened in the first place. There's uh have you seen Crime 101?
SPEAKER_02No, I haven't because it's called Crime 101.
SPEAKER_03Alright, it's a bad name, but there's a scene I like in it where Chris Emsworth is robbing a bunch of people, like three people, and one of them he takes all their main guns, and one of them has he says his dad's service revolver, and it's like an old gun. It's an old revolver. Uh and he clearly has never cleaned it or used it before. So he fires it at Chris Emsworth and it just blows up in his hand.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but that's an issue of old guns.
SPEAKER_03It's an old gun, but it's all it's a revolver. If that was properly maintained and cared for, he either would he'd probably still be able to use it, but also he would have noticed that it wasn't usable if he was checking it and clean cleaning the barrel.
SPEAKER_02How old the gun is though, because gun safety would also tell you don't put your hand in front of the barrel, but if you've got a musket, I mean that's part of that's part of the part of the deal.
SPEAKER_03That's true. Yeah, it also depends what metal the gun is made out of.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because it could just deteriorate over time. You could just have an old shit gun. I mean, all of a gun all the guns from NAM broke in water because they were telling you soldiers how can you go hide in puddles? Sometimes guns are just a bit shit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because they make a lot of them.
SPEAKER_02Okay, they survive the train tracks. No thanks to Vern. Well waiting saves his ass last moment. This is your favorite part of the game.
SPEAKER_03Where is hamburger? Right? Or did they do that earlier? Yeah, they buy some hit some meat and some burger bugs.
SPEAKER_02Did he buy some meat and so that surely ought to have been the beginning of the journey, Chris? I think you've got us twisted about. Where are they buying it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right before the change track, I think. They went to the store. They did. They he went to the fucking food store, brother. They pulled their money and then they went.
SPEAKER_07He's in the middle of the camp.
SPEAKER_03I know, but he still he hiked to it. They they like pulled straws or whatever on who was gonna hike to the food store. I'm rewinding the footage, sure. Okay, we're gonna go. Okay. That's fine with me if he goes to a store and he buys meat. The guy says a dollar fifty, he says one fifty of meat.
SPEAKER_02Chris, what is your insightful um input about him buying some burger meat? Since you're so focused on it. You didn't have any?
SPEAKER_06We can look at it.
SPEAKER_02Okay, the train, the train goes past. Okay, I'm watching Rubber Phoenix. He's looking down, he's going, you stupid little cunch, you almost died. Or smoke.
SPEAKER_04He literally says that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he says, You fucking assholes, you almost ruined this whole thing. Now let's go to the burger shop for some meat. I'm sure he says that.
SPEAKER_03I do not remember Jerry O'Connell dropping his fucking burger meat. They have this meat that they he bought. It doesn't matter. Jerry O'Connell drops his meat in the fire. And then he Yeah. And he's like, Give me some of yours, and they all they all laugh at him and go, No. And then he picks it up with the stick out of the fire and the ashes. And he goes, That's alright, I got it.
SPEAKER_02Is that not a fucking marshmallow, Chris?
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_07No, it's meat. He's they're cooking burgers over the fire.
SPEAKER_02Regardless, I rewind the footage and the the shop does not happen after the train tracks.
SPEAKER_03Well, okay, fair. It's before the train.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so I was I was right in the first place. You're saying talking about it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but you weren't right that it happened before they started marching on the journey. They they start marching and then at some it's before the bridge is what I meant to say. They send him off to the store.
SPEAKER_02Because we're talking about a linear story and we've accidentally omitted them buying burger meat. This is stupid.
SPEAKER_03They leave and then they buy burger meat. It doesn't let's move past it, but they do buy burger meat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Vern drops his burger meat, and they're like, haha, you dumbass, you're gonna starve out here.
SPEAKER_03He's like, no one wants to give him half a burger or anything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this is where we're at your favorite part of the story, Chris, with Lardas. You love this scene.
SPEAKER_03No, this is so horrible. Also, how does he drink a fucking whole bottle of canola oil or whatever and eat a whole egg and not throw up immediately?
SPEAKER_02Strong stomach.
SPEAKER_03I guess, man. I don't know that there's much to talk about with this story. It's just a little rough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't I don't see how it there's nothing in it like I don't mind, mate. We're so back. I think it's just supposed to be funny. Parallels the the story in any way. It's just I'm going, I remember was this fat guy, and everyone called him fat, and then he ate a whole lot of food, and then everyone's like, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then you know how he showed them up? He showed them out by by eating a lot of food and then and then throwing the food up on them.
SPEAKER_02There's a logical fallacy in the story that the people of this town wouldn't believe that the guy they think is incredibly fat would win the food competition.
SPEAKER_03And then throw up because he's so fat. Like they would just be grossed out and make fun of him for it.
SPEAKER_02I do like the little uh BOA hats that they wear to the pie eating competition. Yeah, I don't know what that's supposed to be, because it's not, it wouldn't be Castle Rock, I guess. Bake off and and be B away, be bake off and accomplish.
SPEAKER_03I guess is it the guys in the front row with like the antlers on their hats?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a very um Alan Wake.
SPEAKER_03I'm not rewinding, but they say at some point. They say at some point, uh and they were throwing up on the nuns, and the nuns are throwing up on the collection of deer, you know, the the Deer Society or whatever they call them.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so I wonder if that's what Alan Wake took from and it's uh Stephen King inspirations.
SPEAKER_03Maybe if it comes back up, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm curious if Gordy is relevant in the future at all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well we'll we'll stay we'll we'll stay we'll keep an eye peeled. An eye peeled? That's the term, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No. Okay. Oh my god. Alright, I'll peel it.
SPEAKER_02Peel the eyes.
SPEAKER_03Alright, I'll do both of them.
SPEAKER_02I guess I already watched the movie, so okay, and then yeah, you've got the audiobooks, you can put some audio description, you'll be fine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02They they have this discussion post-burger meet, Chris, that you were you were so interested. And you get this is what I was saying earlier with the boys, whether like you your story may have had a big, large, um, extravagant third act, but why wasn't there like a monster or like someone dying? Or you know, something something to switch it up, and he's like, Well, your stories are shit, mate. I'm the reader here, you guys are saying I'm the good writer, and now you guys are saying they're shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But what's funny is I would say it's sort of a similar thing about standby, mate. The the ending is not the best part of it at the very least.
SPEAKER_02No, but also this movie doesn't really have a free act structure in any way, it just kind of happens.
SPEAKER_03It feels a little like a TV movie, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_02I was just about to say it feels so much like an elongated TV show episode.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like we start with the characters and like all the relationships and everyone in this town is kind of pre-established.
SPEAKER_09And then it cuts to the end, and he's like, Yeah, well, I guess life goes on.
SPEAKER_03It ends like an episode of six feet under or something.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what that is. I've heard of it, I don't know what that is.
SPEAKER_03I haven't seen it. I haven't seen it, to be fair.
SPEAKER_09So, how do you know this is like an episode of it?
SPEAKER_03I don't really. I was just throwing some spaghetti at the wall. I know how that show ends.
SPEAKER_02Okay, right now, okay, we're having we're having some discussions. They're they're bringing up some points here. Okay, we're saying in Disney, okay, if Pluto is a dog, what is Goofy? Because Pluto is Goofy's dog, okay. But you look at Goofy and you would assume that he is a dog for having a dog face. Well, it's what you're doing.
SPEAKER_03Like a hundred years ago in Mickey Mouse world, there was a divergence where um some dogs stayed subservient and some were allowed to join the world of uh man mice and other such animals. So Pluto is one of the subservient dog race, and Goofy is one of the ones who were allowed to join society.
SPEAKER_02So you're you're implying like um like a social hierarchy?
SPEAKER_03Or is it Yeah, but a forced one over millennia.
SPEAKER_02Is it like genetic magic in which some of them evolved faster than others? And then you could say that Goofy is actually being nice to Pluto by welcoming him in to like the rest of them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, what you don't see though is when Goofy and Pluto are alone, Goofy is kicking Pluto.
SPEAKER_02No, don't say that's no no no no no no no. That's a very loving relationship between owner and pet.
SPEAKER_03He picks his food up, he doesn't let him eat when anyone else isn't there.
SPEAKER_02No, they go on walks together, they're gonna be able to do it. I think I think you're getting you're getting my boy Goofy twisted. He's helping Sorry in Kingdom Hearts, he's doing some good shit.
SPEAKER_07He came back wrong.
SPEAKER_02That's got a weird what's the implication on that?
SPEAKER_07I don't know. Didn't he die in Kingdom Hearts 2? No. Oh told you Griffith's dead who died in Kingdom Hearts 2? Got crushed by a big rock.
SPEAKER_02Oh dude, I cannot remember, but I it wasn't Griffith 'cause he's in free my man. Well he came back. And it came back wrong. And that's what I'm saying. Okay, moving on to Verne's question. If you could only have one food for the rest of your life, what would you have?
SPEAKER_03Would it nourish me properly?
SPEAKER_02Maybe it depends. I don't think I feel like you would still get the negative I don't think you would die. Okay, I think in spite of the question, no matter what you choose, you wouldn't die of malnourishment, but you would get the negative effects of the food. Hypothetically, if you eat nothing but chocolate, your teeth would rot and you would get really, really overweight. And also you'd flock a lot because it's pure dairy.
SPEAKER_03If you're eating something that has no protein, are you still getting like it just the base amount of protein you need at least every day?
SPEAKER_02I think if well it depends. Okay, if you're eating like fucking tofu, you're gonna be a twig. Okay, but if you're eating like a normal food substance, you'll do okay.
SPEAKER_03If I say Ben and Jerry's half-baked ice cream.
SPEAKER_02Okay, what's in the half-baked ice cream?
SPEAKER_03What's what's the it's like brownie chunks, it's like chocolate, chocolate chips, cookie dough, chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
SPEAKER_02Do you think in the spirit of this question you would also get diabetes?
SPEAKER_06No. No. Okay, but it's also you know the dairy wall. You're a food guy.
SPEAKER_04I don't know what that means.
SPEAKER_02W when like the human body takes in a certain amount of dairy like anymore because he's extreme nausea and vomit. Have you never seen people try and chug milk?
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_02Um uh Max Mofo back in the day did it, I'm sure. That was a pretty popular it's it's like a thing people to try and chug like three gallons of milk at once. You will be throwing your guts up by the second one.
SPEAKER_03I bet you can't even do that with water. That's crazy. No, you can you could do that with water. You you can overhydrate.
SPEAKER_02You can overhydrate, but I'm pretty sure it's like almost inhumane amounts of consumption you would need to get water poisoning.
SPEAKER_03Well, if you're like chugging the water, I think you die. I think you almost drown yourself. You're chugging it fast enough.
SPEAKER_02Isn't not that you would get like the amount you would consume, you would get water poisoning first, but even then you humanely wouldn't be able to actually do it.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I I don't actually know. I read at some point that someone died because they did a water challenge, drinking water challenge.
SPEAKER_02That is that is sad for them, but it's also kind of funny. Imagine having to tell like relatives. Fucking exploded, man.
SPEAKER_03Well, there's one news story I always remember, which is someone I think died in an internet cafe because they forgot to eat, which unfortunately isn't doesn't never happen, but they were playing Don't Starve.
SPEAKER_04Which is very funny.
SPEAKER_02I take it that's in like an Asian internet cafe. Yeah, yeah. That happens a lot. People die from exhaustion in those like a fair amount, which is fucking crazy. But I don't see but the thing is I can relate to it because back when I was a teenager I had um sight problems from forgetting to blink while playing video games.
SPEAKER_06Really? Wow. Yeah. I used to play too much World of Warcraft.
SPEAKER_02For me, it was guitar hero. I feel that makes more sense because I have to watch the notes. So if I'm blinking and not seeing the notes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're like at war. You're a 12-year-old at war. I can't fucking miss them, they're coming for me.
SPEAKER_02Maybe that's why fucking Cory Feldman's got the glasses going.
SPEAKER_04That's funny.
SPEAKER_02When did this come out? Would the um Commodore have been about during this time? Hold on, I'll do a little research. So your foods that you're going for is Ben and Jerry's.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I thought specifically half baked.
SPEAKER_02Specifically half-baked.
SPEAKER_05The flavor, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Very woke of you, might you add Ben and Jerry's?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02But my okay, I was thinking about this, okay, and I was going to say meat freeze pizza, okay, because I get my choices of meats on the pizza. So I've got like some flavor variation. I don't have to eat.
SPEAKER_03Oh true.
SPEAKER_02That's true.
SPEAKER_03You take some off. That's a great point. I can't take some of my toppings out of the ice cream.
SPEAKER_02I have technically some fruit content with the tomato sauce. It depends how high of a quality, I suppose. And then I also have carbs from the pizza base.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, alright. That's a way better answer.
SPEAKER_02I feel like it's I think it comes with the territory.
SPEAKER_04Is there is there crunch? Is there crunch? Is there crust crunchy or soft?
SPEAKER_09Uh I'm a soft pizza guy.
SPEAKER_01Nice, okay. No, me too. Me too.
SPEAKER_02Is that that's that's New York thing? You get the big, big, sloppy pizzas, don't you?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and those kind of have to be soft because they're so large, but there are places that like a thin, crunchy crust. And I like a soft crust. I like it to be almost entirely soft. There's a place around here that puts sesame seeds on the crust, which is really nice.
SPEAKER_02This was 1959. These motherfuckers ain't got no video games.
SPEAKER_03No video games. No wonder it's trying to stab people.
SPEAKER_02Was there arcades? I doubt there was arcades going on at that time.
SPEAKER_03By the way, Kefer Sutherland and this just made me think of the Lost Boys immediately. He's leading a gang, he's got bleach blonde hair.
SPEAKER_02I've never seen Lost Boys. Is that what you're saying? Are you serious? I don't know, it just doesn't seem like my vibe.
SPEAKER_09I feel like everyone everyone jumps on you for that.
SPEAKER_03It's good. No, I mean that's fair. If that's your reason, that's fair.
SPEAKER_02And it's like, okay, I see that it says horror comedy.
SPEAKER_09How camp is Lost Boys.
SPEAKER_03What the the trick they pull is um there's Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, I believe, and they are in a A plot or B plot, they're sort of both A plots. In a in a secondary plot with uh the little brother of the family that just moved into town, and then Geefer Sutherland and the Vampires are in uh another plot with the Big Brother. The little brother plot is a lot more comedy, and the Big Brother plot is a lot more horror.
SPEAKER_02I think the the issue I have with it is when I look at it, it feels like someone's made like a high school drama movie, but they've replaced the high schoolers with like vampires, so it's edgy and cool for boys, and it's tricked men into loving it.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's it's a Joel Schumacher movie, so it's very homo suggestive.
SPEAKER_02I'm I'm down with that. That isn't that doesn't phase me.
SPEAKER_03I feel like No, it's hopefully a positive point.
SPEAKER_02Like it's that's what I'm saying. It'd be a bit stranger if he was like, Yeah, but no homo. Like, come on, guys.
SPEAKER_03No homo.
SPEAKER_02I'll kiss your neck, okay, and I'll suck you off, okay. That is not gay, guys. Come on.
SPEAKER_03He's he's gotta be around the same age he was when he played whatever the vampire's name was. I was hoping I would remember it in time. But his hair looks similar, just longer in that.
SPEAKER_09How did we get onto this from the meat feast pizza discussion?
SPEAKER_04Uh you know. Just just a couple guys chatting about a couple things. Have you seen the video of Keeper Sutherland jumping on a Christmas tree?
SPEAKER_06No. Was there a reasonable?
SPEAKER_03And he looks at the camera and goes, I'm a pirate, I believe. And then he jumps on the tree and tackles it to the floor.
SPEAKER_02Are pirates known for uh assaulting Christmas decorations?
SPEAKER_03He was known for having a lot of alcohol problems, but he insists to this day that he wasn't drunk when he did that.
SPEAKER_02See if he's willing to admit he has alcohol problems, I don't see why why he would lie in that issue. Me neither.
SPEAKER_07But it it's a confusing thing to do.
SPEAKER_05I believe he was goaded by his friends.
SPEAKER_02Should we move on with the plot of this film, Chris? I don't see why we're talking about a man in a hotel room jumping on a Christmas tree.
SPEAKER_04I presume lobby. So they find the body of this kid.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they find the body, okay. There's like this last half an hour is like it's stretched out a wee bit, like you're clear. Clearly they were like, okay, we're trying to we're trying to get movie length here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this is like 15 pages of the book, which is 75 pages. It's this is the last quarter of the story in the book.
SPEAKER_07Are we forgetting um in the book? There's like a hail storm that happens.
SPEAKER_09Does the hail storm affect the story in any way, shape, or form?
SPEAKER_03Uh no, besides like it makes a lot of the tertiary characters run off, so it's just Gordy, Chris, and then Keeper Sutherland, and his goon. Everyone else runs off, and then those four are in more of a standoff together alone. And then they finally get them to run off, and then the only other notable thing is that uh the boy, I forget his name, but the dead boy, his eyes are closed in the book. But they look at him for a moment in the hailstorm, and it looks like his eyes have opened up, but it's because uh you know they're filling with hail and it it's reflecting light. Which is a cool image, and I'm disappointed they didn't try to recreate, but it would be tough to.
SPEAKER_09Okay, but it's also a Stephen King book. So maybe his eyes did open for a bit.
SPEAKER_07That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_03That's what that was like a scary element of it, especially this is the guy who wrote Pet Cemetery, like this is the guy 20 years later writing the story down. Maybe he's telling himself that it was the hail. So I liked having that little that is the horror element to the story that is missing in the movie. It's not it's still not enough quite to justify it as a horror entry, but it was a cool image that I feel like was lost.
SPEAKER_02Actually, you know, before before we get to the body of it, you can tell it's late because my voice is getting so raspy. Oh my god. There's a moment where Chris and Will Waiton's character are sitting by a tree, and you know, Will Wheaton's he's been he's been his little emo self and he's getting looked after by Chris. And Chris is basically like, yeah, well, the reason I try to help you so much is because like my life obviously nothing's gone to really come of me. Like he's accepted that he's seen as a lore in society, so he's he's trying to make good of it. And it it's after Will Wayne's character has another another dream about his dead brother, and then after it, there's uh a nice scene where it cuts to him uh writing his book again on the train tracks, and you see a fawn while Tom will look at him and then run off before he wakes up. It's just a it's like it's on the nose, it's very simple symbolism of like childhood innocence. I think I would say that's the best scene of the movie. I like that interaction between them and um Cory Feldman's characters, like they're there to flesh out the cast, so it's not just the two boys, but the main protagonists are Chris and Will Wheaton's character.
SPEAKER_03Definitely, which does bring me to my only I've mentioned things that could be better uh that they left out from the story, but my only actual issue is uh in the confrontation with the bullies, Chris is the one who pulls the gun out and instigates everything. Which feels more in character with him, feels a little less in character with Gordy, and then also you know, it's not a direct he doesn't die because he did that, but he dies because he tries to intervene. I I want to talk about how he dies, but he dies because he's trying to help somebody, you know, he wants to stop somebody else from dying in another situation, so it it makes more sense for his character to be the one to make the choice in this situation, and it makes it more meaningful as a sort of a two-hander story.
SPEAKER_02But do you not think it works better for like showing the maturity of his character that he's the one that's like no a gun in a situation is going to make stuff worse?
SPEAKER_05I guess so. I don't really feel like they get to express that at all, though.
SPEAKER_09You don't think that comes through?
SPEAKER_03No, I do like how his character reacts to the situation. I don't have a problem with it inherently, but uh given the fact that one of the characters does pull a gun out, it makes less sense that it was Cordy.
SPEAKER_02I could see that. I think it would maybe be fun if um Verne did it because he's like the character you would expect to least. It would even make more sense if Corey Feldman's character did it, because he's the nut job that has violent tendencies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I would like that a little bit more, because then you even remove that sort of responsibility of You're not committing to violence, but you are committing to the idea of violence by pointing a gun at somebody.
SPEAKER_02But will the older kids instigate the violence?
SPEAKER_03Well, they do, they pull the knife out, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But see, pulling a knife out and then pulling a gun both have the same implication. A threat.
SPEAKER_01Very much so. Just kinda a gun shortens the time frame, that's all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a gun is more like a knife is like I will kill you, and there might be some effort put in. A gun is like I will kill you much faster and much quicker.
SPEAKER_01Call 911 right now.
SPEAKER_02Especially out in the fucking woods, you're done with this.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. Speaking of a knife killing you slowly, though, they talk about how Chris actually dies, and he I think this is a stupid way to die. He is in what do they say, a donut shop, and he there's two people arguing over who was in line first, and he steps in and one of them cuts his throat.
SPEAKER_09Is that from the book?
SPEAKER_04That's in both.
SPEAKER_02Well, in the book with Chris, they explains that because earlier when he's talking about who I won't do anything with my life, um, Well Wheaton's character says, Well, you come to college with me. And towards the end, he explains that he did go to college with him and he got into a nice restaurant, and it was his first week on the job that this happened. So the tragedy is more supposed to be that even though the way he viewed himself, his personality and his character did help him achieve what he should have been in life, and then it was taken away from him unfairly. Like how most of these characters were unfairly impacted by their childhood.
SPEAKER_03Does the film not say hold on, I'm pulling it up right now at the start, not say that he was an attorney when he died? In the newspaper article at the start?
SPEAKER_09Oh, does it?
SPEAKER_03Uh Christopher Chambers, attorney, Christopher Chambers fatally stabbed in restaurant. Yeah. But they yeah, they went to school together, he got his half-hour job. And you're not wrong though. Like he's only in the restaurant because he has a job that lets him pay for going to a restaurant. And then I don't what who was arguing about being in line first at a restaurant? Unless they mean like a fast food joint. I don't know. Uh I did want to talk about everybody dies in the book. Not on the trip, but when he's doing the narration at the very end, Verne was killed in a fire. They say that he probably was holding the cigarette that started it. Teddy, he also wanted to join the army and was refused, but he started like just drinking and driving and crashed into a tree with six other people. It's a much grimmer ending.
SPEAKER_05Whereas in in the movie, he's just saying they're working, they're someplace.
SPEAKER_02Does um ever say what happens to Gordy after the novel?
SPEAKER_04Or does it just end how he just says me, I'm a writer now. That's it.
SPEAKER_02It's kind of a really fucked up sad ending.
SPEAKER_07It is, but there's something.
SPEAKER_03The I think the only other thing I didn't mention that they changed from the book is uh when they're flipping coins, they I forget what they call it, but he's like, oh that's a fucking bad omen. They have a really stupid name for it. And in the book they flip again, and when they it they flip again in both, but when they flip again in the book, everyone but Gordy gets tails again, and Gordy gets heads, and they all move on, but there's some narration about I felt like that was a bad omen. I was scared from my friends, something like that.
SPEAKER_02See the thing is though, with yeah, all the all the other kids they they die in like some meaningless, like horrible instance that Body knows about. But it's also like he states that he did fall away from these people, so it's not like these are only meaningful relationships he had, he's just it's how much he values these people because of when he knew him from it. It's not like that was like his best friend that died, and his best friend died. It'll be over the years he's heard from like a family member or seen on the news. Oh, you see that guy that you used to know? Yeah, yeah, passed away the other week.
SPEAKER_03Unless they come back in the Castle Rock story somehow, like it's relevant that they're dead. I like it more the way he's saying it in the movie because it sounds like you know, this thing I heard about Vern, I heard 10 years ago. This thing that I heard about Teddy, I heard five years ago. Whereas in the book, it's like uh, you know, I know exactly when they died, I heard when they died, even though we're not in touch, and there's no internet. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, then putting his photos. Well, to be it would be like fair, it'd be like early 90s. Castle Rock's a small town. That's true. That's true. Well it's a big town, no, it is a big town. 1200 is much 12,000.
SPEAKER_03But you would know like you would see the hearse going through town for the funeral, and you would go, oh shit, who died? and they would tell you who died. It's probably small enough for that.
SPEAKER_02I think the the whole point of it is more just supposed to be that like life is fleeting into because even though this isn't a good situation the kids were in, he cherishes it as a good moment in his life.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's an adventure.
SPEAKER_02And it's more about like how it impacted him, but it also would have impacted these people just as much.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the other thing, something else I just remembered that they did change from the book is the leeches. It wasn't a thing they accidentally waded through. It was This might have helped the movie a little bit more too. They took a moment, they found like a really beautiful spring. And a couple of them or one at least one of them said, I don't know if we should be swimming in that. And I think someone pushed him in. But then they wound up swimming in that for a while, and then they realized there were leeches because it's still water. You know that that's more of an adventure moment than wading through a fucking bog and getting covered with leeches.
SPEAKER_02I wonder, was it Fern? Was it Verne who was like, hey guys, don't go into this water?
SPEAKER_05I believe so.
SPEAKER_02See, it backs up my point. I would say he would be the only one to survive in a horror movie, but it seems like he might be the the one who died first out of the friend group.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's always unfair though, isn't it? The one who dies first, because they don't usually know what's coming. They don't get a chance.
SPEAKER_02So can I the end of the book? In the movie, there's not much um it doesn't tell you much about Gordy's life afterwards, other than you see him writing the book on his Matrix ass PC with a neon green lighting. And a very, very fancy house with two kids. Does it go into detail about if he married someone successful or was it his writing that was successful?
SPEAKER_03I think they just leave it blank. In the book, they definitely don't. Because it is just a short story from a collection of short stories. The book. It's called The Bot. Uh they don't have time to expand on that. They barely spend time talking about him as a person.
SPEAKER_02Interesting. So would you take the movie's ending as he was successful?
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Do you think that's because Stephen King was successful? Yes.
SPEAKER_07He's just Stephen King.
SPEAKER_03It's an annoying thing he does in a lot of his stories. I like Stephen King a lot.
SPEAKER_02Okay, but this character is writing like solemn pieces about the childhood friends that he misses, and Stephen King's going, check out the jubies on this woman. And there's vampires.
SPEAKER_09You could definitely have had one of his kids say Jahoobies. There's m your mum jokes in this constantly.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_09What a fucking name. Cory Feldman is Teddy Dumbchap. Dumbchap? Dumbchap.
SPEAKER_05Duchamp?
SPEAKER_09That's not Duchamp? Is it Duchamp? Would he be French? I don't know.
SPEAKER_06I'm not looking at the next one. Okay, Chris.
SPEAKER_02Well if it wrapped up, we actually have someone has wrote in Chris. Would you like to play on to the movie?
SPEAKER_04I would love to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think that's about it for my thoughts on both of them. I like the short story a little bit more. I think the movie would be fine if it were like an hour 15. It would be a really solid movie, but it is just slightly long for the amount of stuff that happens. And especially considering the final confrontation is less eventful in the movie than in the shorter short story, which is just a little anticlimactic. But uh yeah, here we go. We have some listener email that concludes our talk about the movie. If you want to reach out to us, you can email us at the uncannyvalleypod at gmail.com. If you want to follow us on Instagram, you can follow us at the uncannyvalley podcast on Instagram. The mail we have today is from Nat Caterino. She says, Hello, spooky boys. Firstly, happy birthday, Chris. Thank you very much. Not sure if this will be early. It turned out to be very early. This was five days ago. On time, or belated wishes, but I'm oh well late, I guess, since I'm reading it now. But I'm somewhat in the right time frame, I think. May your 30s bring you good health, prosperity, and a large jallop of I don't give a fuck energy. That's very fun. Thank you. Watching Stand By Me as an Adult was a wild experience. I've not watched this since I was a kid. There is so much child abuse in this movie. Yeah? I don't think the child me would have picked up on it, but it's a theme running through the entire movie, definitely. A group of broken, traumatized kids finding kingship together in an ahead of its time found family dynamic. Also ahead of its time, Chris and Gordy are definitely giving preteen queer vibes, and I will not be convinced otherwise. I was not prepared for how I was gonna wait to mention it till afterwards, but I see that. I do. It felt like they could be holding hands at the end when they were walking away.
SPEAKER_02Sort of like responsibility he feels for his friend.
SPEAKER_07But I think that's uh maybe like a misunderstanding.
SPEAKER_10Well, let's talk about let me finish the email and then we'll okay, okay, okay, we'll circle back.
SPEAKER_03But that is a great point. Thank you, Dad. I was not prepared for how hot young Kiefer Sutherland was in this movie as Ace. One of the better performances in the team gang. I really love the parallels between the scene where he plays Chicken with the lumber truck, and then has that same energy directed back at him with Gordy and the gun, where he's forced to back down. Both Ace and Gordy are trying to claim ownership over finding the dead body, an admittedly selfish pursuit, and yet we root for Gordy as the bullied underdog. And in the end, Gordy decides to report the dead body in a respectful way, which I doubt Ace would have done. Anyway, that leech scene unlocks some core childhood memories for me. I don't even have the same equipment, and I harbored a fear of lakes and rivers for some time, thinking that leeches were going to attack me. Thankfully, I lived on the beach so there wasn't there weren't many opportunities, and Jaws somehow hadn't traumatized me as much. Lots of love, Matt. Uh two things. First, something else I did just remember that's different in the story. They don't even report the body in the story. One of I think Kiefer Sutherland's friend anonymously reports the body. Is what they say happens. So none of the main characters do in the in the book.
SPEAKER_02It would have just derailed the entire story. They would have been a violent kid wouldn't have found the body.
SPEAKER_05He should have done that, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh but yeah, the preteen queer vibes. I see it, and I can see the the dad vibes as you know, cis men in the in the 80s misunderstanding that sort of affection between boys as brotherly love, you know, and having to be sort of a hierarchical thing. Whereas it does feel, you know, they're co-leads in this movie. It feels like a very symbiotic relationship between them. There are, he's encouraging him for a lot of things, but there are relationships where people encourage their stubborn friends and then you know get other things in return that aren't directly encouragement for things they're not recognizing about themselves. Relationships aren't a direct mirror of a person.
SPEAKER_02I'm not opposed to the idea of it, okay? But the thing for me is the way I view the relationships in it is Gordy needs that parental figure in order to achieve where he needs to be in life. He needs that sort of um compassion and someone to look out for him, which he doesn't get from his parents. So he reaches out to Chris for that. And Gratty's response to the abuse that he has from his parents is that he felt like he needs to be able to take responsibility to find a place for himself. So they again, as you said symbiotically, they help each other in a way that doesn't like the the other boys obviously need the same sort of friendship that they have, but they gain something more from that, and I don't necessarily see it as romantic because to me, like, okay, maybe maybe they have those feelings for each other, but I feel like the way they support each other is more of like I don't want to say a deeper thing than love, but it's like it's more substantial to the story's themes. If it's not I'm totally fine with that, it's also a coming-of-age story, so that would also fit in with it. Like, I'm not opposed to it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, I think the to me the idea is more that it could become that, and it's like I don't think that was in the intention at any point because a bunch of cis men wrote, directed, presented this, but I like you know, uh, Moonrise Kingdom is one of the Wes Anderson movies that I have latched on to. I don't like a few that I've seen, but it's a very the idea of presenting quote-unquote love between kids as a very pure thing because you're kind of stripping down the notions of attraction to uh you know what what about people connects them to each other rather than desires or things you want from each other, which uh makes it a very strong connection and is is why it you could see it blossoming into something like that.
SPEAKER_02I would get why uh like uh young confused team watched us and latched onto them in that way and maybe wasn't even sure of why they did how that could uh help like that that reading of it flourish a bit more. But for me, again, it's like you said, if it you it with a kid that young, sure that'll be when those emotions start to come through. But I feel like at that age when you're you're dealing with the sort of like just even companionship as a whole, it'll be like uh friendships or family versus there's there's something deeper to it, isn't it? Because kids of that age need that from these people. It's not like uh like if they were gay sure we might have that love for each other, but they could always find someone else, but at that moment in their lives they need the things that I previously said from each other.
SPEAKER_03I think they're just too young to even really process love in that way. It was just like this level of connection that young kids build with each other, and they have a stronger version of that.
SPEAKER_02It's so funny that like we we we didn't break down anything as deep until Nat came in with some points. I'm like, oh yeah, we should probably talk about it as well as a lot of things. Yeah, that's funny. Maybe, maybe.
SPEAKER_03Nat mentions not having the same equipment, so the leech scene wasn't as scary because you don't get a leech on your dick. But those uh, you know, those fish that people are always scared will swim up your urethra. Apparently, those only really swim up uh you know veginal beetles.
SPEAKER_04I don't know if that's also a urethra.
SPEAKER_05See but worth mentioning. So it's like an equal fear.
SPEAKER_02No, for me, Eve, I feel like see if a leech got on there, I think adrenaline would pull me to just rip that bad boy off and not think about it for a good while.
SPEAKER_03No, blood would make me think about. I think I would get through it ripping it off. But when I see blood, I I get freaked out. Because then I process it out.
SPEAKER_02I think it being a leech, I think see if a different animal had bit me there and I saw that much blood, I'd be like, Alright, maybe maybe we're turning back, boys. But if it's a leech, I'm like, oh, the little the little blood guys, and it's a little blood worm.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's true. They are blood guys.
SPEAKER_02And you know, people in the Victorian era, they were slapping those bad boys everywhere. I guarantee you go back in the days, like one in every ten men had a had a bad boy hanging off their member.
SPEAKER_03I hate that a bad boy hanging off their member, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_10Just sucking it up, getting nice and juicy.
SPEAKER_01Is that is that where we're ending? Is that the final move?
SPEAKER_02That maybe that might be the end of it.
SPEAKER_01Oh man.
SPEAKER_03Alright, well, get in touch. We're waiting in your friend. Check out our our drunk commentary from last week on Resident Evil.
SPEAKER_10Bye bye, everyone, I guess.
