In our debut episode, hosts Amelia Scannell and Cooper Willis introduce listeners to the world of Jack FM, the radio format known for unpredictable playlists, nostalgic hits, and the unmistakable “Jack FM energy” that defines its sound. We walk through how Jack FM started, why its mix of ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s rock and pop resonates so widely, and what makes these songs feel instantly familiar.

This premiere also reveals all 64 songs in our tournament to determine the most Jack FM song of all time — a bracket built from decades of radio data, cultural trends, and listener instincts. If you’ve ever wondered why certain songs dominate adult hits radio, or why Jack FM’s playlists feel both chaotic and perfect, this episode sets the foundation.

If you've ever lived in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, or Phoenix, if you've ever dined at an Outback Steakhouse, or if you've ever set foot inside a grocery store at any point since 9-11, you've probably heard Jack FM. It's the station that proudly declares, we play what we want. No DJs, no requests, no soul behind the curtain. Just an endless shuffle of songs you'd never choose, but somehow, impossibly, know every word to. Jack FM doesn't ask to be heard. It simply arrives. On a rental car stereo you didn't set. In the gym where beautiful people don't go. Or found within your stepdad's CD wallet. Like a frequency tune to the collective unconscious. Jack FM isn't nostalgia. It's uninvited memories. Songs that slip in with no warning. Half remembered, half resented. The kind of songs that are okay at barbecues, but never at home. Patched together by Geico commercials and ironic station IDs. Somewhere deep inside that shuffle, there's a vibe. Corporate yet esoteric, familiar yet ominous. Like the smell before a storm. Tonight, we begin our investigation into the phenomenon known as Jack FM Energy. This is Jack the King Energy. My name is Amelia Skinel, and I'm joined by my co-host, Cooper Willis.

SPEAKER_01

Hi, Amelia. Um what an eloquently put way to introduce listeners to the world of Jactical Magic.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, thank you, and what an eloquent way to compliment me. Okay, this is our first episode.

SPEAKER_01

People are probably asking why. Why Jack FM? Why now?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, well, the Cold Open did a lot of heavy lifting. To sum it up, Jack FM's a radio station. Uh that radio station became like a radio brand that other cities took the formula for or bought the formula. It started in Vancouver in like 2002, then it like swept Canada, and then most of America too.

SPEAKER_01

And wasn't it like correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it very much the idea of it was based on the iPod shuffle, but for the rate uh for a radio station where it was just randomly playing whatever?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Uh a shuffle that was when iPods were kind of replacing just throwing on the radio. Yeah, wanted to evoke, just music that everyone is familiar with. No one's gonna protest, but also nobody's gonna be like, what song is this? I love this.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And from from the outside, it it almost appears to be genreless. It's spanning decades, it's it's all over the place.

SPEAKER_02

Anywhere from I'd say late 60s to I don't know, the mid-20 teens, like late Obama era. And so really no connective thread throughout these songs, but there is a quality. Whenever you hear those songs somewhere else, you can imagine it being on Jack FM. You hear it, you go, that's that's a Jack FM song. So we've been calling it Jack FM Vibes, Jack FM energy. Cooper and I and our friend Caitlin, we were just I just texted, I was like, what's the most Jack FM song? Uh-huh. And then just uh we did like three pages, and they were all correct. But this podcast is to picking the most Jack FM song. So yeah, if you're not familiar with the station, you will definitely feel the energy it gives off.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I agree. And yeah, you know, we're kind of like that last collective radio generation where it's like, did you did everyone hear this new song? And and a station like Jack FM comes along and sets the precedent for like our new streaming world where there is no curated playlist that we're all vibing to. It's the Wild West. And yeah, I think that in a lot of ways, Jack FM is to blame for our current society.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, um, there are more choices than ever. Like this is an this is pro Apple Music podcast, but Spotify, a lot of people who defend having Spotify are like, I like hearing what my friends are listening to, or like I like the playlist my friends listen to. And then it's all just the most popular hits. There's no we grew up Carson Daly, Total Request Live, after school, yet we also sought out other things. So I don't know. I guess this podcast is about either educating our younger generations or just a warm handshake for the people our age and older.

SPEAKER_01

I think that's what we're setting out to do. I think people are really going to understand what we're talking about here. They're going to see these songs and they're going to dig through their own libraries and they won't find any of them.

SPEAKER_02

Right. And which is why we call this podcast Jactical Magic. Because these songs feel that way. We're not criticizing these songs. We're not deciding the best of these songs. We're trying to find out which song has that most jactical magic. You, the listener, will definitely get where we're going the further we get. Within a couple episodes, you'll know Jack FM like you live in a car in the 2000s. Nope. That's no good. You live in the city. You'll know Jack FM like like you know the names of all the minions.

SPEAKER_01

There it is.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. That was easy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Stuck the landing. That's great. Yeah. Um, to give an example, okay. So name a bare naked lady song. One week. Exactly. That's what we all would say. That's what every Canadian would say. But Jack FM would say, pinch me.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, not to give away the whole song list, but Jack FM, and we'll get into this later. Jack FM certainly will play the fuck out of one week, but it belongs to the world. Jack FM takes another Bare Naked Ladies song and puts their Jack FM stamp on it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and it's kind of uh uh we've kind of described it that Jack FM loves a second act, or a more mature phase. Sure. We um just like in Bare Naked Ladies when they make us say underwear, still more mature than Chicky the China, the Chinese chicken. First single right out of the gates.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, let's talk about our creepy uh attraction to um anime girls, yeah. And bare naked ladies, although packed with references, I think LFO had better references. Michael J. Fox was Alex Piqueton, okay. Right.

SPEAKER_01

That beats the smoking man. Sure, because the smoking man, that's it's it's a little too inside. Like, I gotcha, I'm with you. LFO. Right. Okay, I'm a B and L D all the way. B and L dork. Gotcha. Bare naked ladies dork.

SPEAKER_02

On your bumper, you have one of those like round white ovals of just the initials. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's definitely more like if you know, you know. I always wanted to start a band called DMBNL, which would be a Dave Matthews slash bare naked ladies cover band. DMBNL.

SPEAKER_02

Or I and I'm sure Dave Matthews is getting really tired of his touring shtick. God knows I am. Maybe he does a tour where they only do bare naked lady sets.

SPEAKER_01

I apologize for not knowing his name, but the Kermit singer of Bare Naked Ladies, they lost him to the and they never replaced them. Maybe they bring Dave.

SPEAKER_02

The white one with the glasses, not the rapping one.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Not the other white one. He's olive complexion. He's he's something. Yeah. But yeah, like maybe Dave could be a good fit for that. Because he's kind of got that saying, like he could do it. I think for sure. If nothing else comes of this podcast, I hope this idea gets out to him and he just considers it because we, the world, are sick of this tour.

SPEAKER_02

He still tours a lot. I'm sure he has like a residency at Red Rocks or something. That weirdly perfect drummer. Carter Buford. He is so good that it makes you think he doesn't love music. Like he sees it as numbers.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. There's no soul to it.

SPEAKER_02

He is so technically good that it's the lamest thing in the world.

SPEAKER_01

Or it's just a robot. It's just a robot doing it. Do we have a Dave Matthews on the list?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. We're gonna tell you.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Dave Matthews is on the list. Alright, well, let's move on. Okay, so we've been talking about Jackal Magic, Jack FM energy. What is our method for figuring that out? Well, we're gonna be pitting 64 of the most Jack FM ass songs against each other in a bracket style single elimination tournament.

SPEAKER_01

The listeners will vote for the winner of each matchup until a song emerges victorious. Oh, listeners.

SPEAKER_02

Sounds like some voting to do. We've got some interaction. And Cooper, here's a surprise. I just got this email. Let me let me pull it up. Okay, so I just found this out right before we started recording. So uh apparently the winning song will be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as uh part of its legacy of cultural innovators. Wow. Citing their influence on American music and their definitive embodiment of quote pure Jack FM energy. Wow. That's wow. That is that is a huge honor. Wow, from the rock and roll hall of fame.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, right out of the gates, we have them behind our backs with this premise. That's amazing.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, they yeah, yeah, I don't know. I just got it. I mean, I think it's if I'm honest, I think it's really weird of them to do that. Like, I guess like in the off-season where they're not like inducting everybody that they exist. Uh, I don't think it's gonna be a permanent exhibit. I think it's just like an award that the song gets. It might be like in their archives or yeah, maybe at best a plaque somewhere.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I mean, that that's wonderful news for both the artists and for the podcast.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. I mean, maybe it will be in like a museum exhibit. Uh museum or hall of like what is the difference between a museum and a hall of fame? Is this the rock and roll hall of fame museum, I believe? They call I think they call it both. But then like the natural history, like it's hall of fame dinosaurs, like for the most part of the case. Talk about a hall of fame. Yeah, it's so like a museum is a hall of fame for like dinosaurs and artifacts. So that's who would be your Hall of Fame dino, though. I mean, the classic foursome, you know, you've got pternosaurus rex. You don't even you don't even need to name them. I got him. Brontosaurus somehow is in the foursome, even though a potasaur is its real name. But yeah. Triceratops, stegosaurus, a potasaur.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe pterodactyl coming in close fifth, even though it's technically not a dinosaur. Different hips and ankles. Uh, and then Velociraptor in sixth. Yeah, I mean, that definitely caught some that shot up since 1993. Yeah. Maybe got knocked down once we realized it had feathers.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, oh, it's just a bird. It's just a little bird.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Um, and then what's that? What's that like short, turtle-ish, spiky tail?

SPEAKER_01

Are you talking an ankyosaur? Yep. Because that's my dude. That's my number one with a bullet.

SPEAKER_02

Really? I love an ankyosaur. Okay. Maybe I'm just a basic bitch, but hey, you know what? Dinosaurus is number one in my heart and number one on the list.

SPEAKER_01

You turn on the Jack FM uh dinosaur playlist, they're gonna they're gonna name the ones you named.

SPEAKER_02

Um, okay, so of the 64, each song is from a different artist. So no repeat artists, for example, no one week and pinch me. Even though, like I said, Jack FM plays a hell of a lot more than one single from these artists. Like, yeah, just they love a best of. They live, they love a greatest hits, and then they love some b-sides.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you know, on a greatest hits, there's always like one or two songs where you're like, oh, pick that one, huh? Cool. Maybe that's maybe Jack FM just is a rotating CD player of best of's. Mm-hmm. That's that's sure, or at least like the first eight songs on a best of. But now I think listeners are probably thinking, like, no repeat, how is that even possible? And I have to say, to your credit, you labored over this list and really found so many more songs than I thought was even possible. Right.

SPEAKER_02

Just taking one song from an artist, that's such an ask. That is it's cruel almost, but like that is the tournament. You know, uh we're we're not real sports sportsers, but you don't let every team into the World Series. Right. You don't let the the New York Yankees into the NBA finals just because the Knicks are there.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Hmm, quite a grab.

SPEAKER_02

Quite a sports grab.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna say, is this turning into a sports corner podcast? Because that sounded like a lot of sports talk to me. If it is, this episode has completed because I was I've exhausted my sports. So yeah, we we we know. Like, you're gonna come at us, you're gonna see these matchups, and you're gonna say, like, what? And you chose that song? What about we know we've already done a slight bit of curating to make sure that we are tailoring it in the correct direction of what jactical magic is. Yes, is that fair to say? And so we're taking those 64 songs and we are randomizing it, and then we're splitting it into two lists: 32 for Amelia and 32 for me. Then we'll randomize our own lists to keep the integrity, and we haven't looked at them since.

SPEAKER_02

So, yeah, for the 32 matchups, Cooper's got them, I've got them. So, like, if if I announce a song and he announces a song, it's not like point counterpoint for each song. Cooper and I could be in complete agreement, or we might completely disagree. That's why we left it up to the listeners.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, we we're nervous. There are going to be times that we are going to want to fight for both of the songs. It's but it's the name of the game and it's a democracy, and we're putting this in the listener's control. And and you know, like just because we're saying that when Amelia picks a song versus me picking a song, it's not like Teams. You could play it that way. Like, we could see who comes out on top.

SPEAKER_02

Wait, are you saying that they will vote because I'm saying maybe we'll have some extra sway. Well, after this announcement, we're never gonna say again, like I'm never gonna pick an Amelia song. She annoys me. No one will say that. No one will say that. No one's gonna say that. I mean, I might say it. Okay, so we're gonna take a break, and when we come back, we're we're revealing the tournament. Okay, be right back.

SPEAKER_01

That was a lot of information, but I think we covered everything.

SPEAKER_02

And uh, is it clear? Is everyone excited? Everyone is so excited who is listening right now. Cooper, can we get to it already? My god, uh enough of the talking. And these people are where's the off switch on these two?

SPEAKER_01

Now is the time. Yeah, this is the moment. We are revealing the list. This is the bracket. This is the moment we have been waiting for.

SPEAKER_02

This is the true Jactical Magic tournament draw because we are drawing these names.

SPEAKER_01

To do a quick recap, we took 64 songs, randomized them. We each grabbed 32, randomized against, and now we're picking them from our own lists, which we have not looked at since, and we are putting them into a bracket, one-on-one tournament style, 32 tournaments. Let's fucking go.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I don't know if we need that kind of language. Okay, so I am going to draw for match one. This is match one. Okay, I am picking the first random song from my half of the list. Okay. All right, and already I am coming out with a real fighter. We've got red hot chili peppers, other side.

SPEAKER_04

Oh man.

SPEAKER_02

Versus Cooper.

SPEAKER_01

Um versus another god, a real contender. Letting Kravits Fly Away. Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. I cannot this is awesome because Red Hot Chili Peppers versus Letting Kravits Fly Away. Those were some of the first songs we thought of with Jack FM energy. Yeah. Not to not to weigh the tournament. But I mean, like the 93 Chicago Bulls. God, I am so into sports. Yeah. When they ended up Entered the playoffs.

SPEAKER_01

Let me hear all about that.

SPEAKER_02

So like we can say that.

SPEAKER_01

Red Hot Chili Peppers Other Side is such a great example of Jack FM energy because it's not the song that you would think. It's not the song that immediately springs to mind when you think of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But it's kind of that second act. Something I think we forgot to talk about is Jack's Bull Magic. Oh, you did it in the intro, but they have these like really snarky station IDs that play coming back from commercials. No DJ. And you hear those snarky IDs and you can hear these songs just dropping in after those. Like both of these songs are perfect examples. I cannot believe this is the first matchup.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, honestly, like jackal magic, jackfm energy, the opening like chords or riffs are so you can just hear them do their little bumper, and then a song comes in, and you're like, wow, that will always be tied to a like snarky bumper now. Right. Like I can bring myself back to like where I was when Jack FM was on and they threw on that song. We want to talk about the Jack Doctrine. Oh, yeah, where it's a really educational, it's for educational purposes. That's when we dissect and list those qualities. And then that will get published in a book where school children from then on will be taught tactical magic.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh coming up next, there one coming in hot. We got stained bin a while.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, okay. And I've got so it'll be stained bin a while versus goo goo dolls. Slide. Yeah, we'll unpack that uh in a couple weeks.

SPEAKER_01

But um like uh you know I have a lot to say about goo goo dolls slide because iris is the love of my life, but yeah, slide is slide's the right vibe. See people, I'm even compromising, like it's okay.

SPEAKER_02

Uh right, and we'll get into it later, but I I've got some thoughts on stained. Uh sounds like that's gonna be a very uh two thoughts about stained because what a clickhanger. They are not something I listen to much of.

SPEAKER_01

I bet even stained isn't thinking about stained right now.

SPEAKER_02

No, they're they're just thinking about like the off-season, there's no county fairs after uh Labor Day. They're just gonna how are they gonna make ends meet? Sorry, we are that's rude.

SPEAKER_01

That's not what we're about. We we hope we don't do that kind of stuff. We hope the members of Stain listen to our podcasts. We wish them well in this bracket, and we are not here to influence you. So no, okay.

SPEAKER_02

I am drawing first this round, match three. Beastie boys fight for your right versus That's pretty solid.

SPEAKER_01

I have Cheryl Crow if it makes you happy.

SPEAKER_02

As you can see, with the Beastie Boys Fight for Your Right, they will play with other genres. They will play with the songs that you may not have been an 80s, 90s great rap uh fan, but you know the Beastie Boys.

SPEAKER_01

These first six songs, looking at them, it feels so random that it already feels it feels very Jack FM already. And I'm I'm very happy.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, my list of 64 or our list of 64 is okay. You can you can put you you and Caitlin really worked hard on it. It has been sweated over. I have the three handwritten pages that I would love to post as we'll post them in the uh show notes. Okay, match four, Cooper. Okay. Um, I have Beck a Loser. Ooh, okay.

SPEAKER_01

We're both big Beckheads, but that's okay.

SPEAKER_02

And I have Radiohead Creep, which like I always find Beck and Radiohead on the same continuum. They were doing good stuff after everybody gave a shit. Right. And then people started giving a shit again. But oh, also you have Beck the Loser. I have Radiohead Creep. It's the Losers versus the creeps.

SPEAKER_01

Good theme episode. And yeah, I would say like again, both Beck and Radiohead are critically acclaimed bands. I think of them more as my alternative station, but these two particular songs definitely got played to hell on Jack FM because they are kind of the more entry-level for these two artists. Like they both got too experimental for mainstream radio, I guess.

SPEAKER_02

They were critically acclaimed, but they just didn't fit. This comes from Beck's first-ish album, kind of first, like commercially first, and then this comes from Radiohead's first album. Same thing, commercially first. This is Pablo, honey. Oh, yeah, that so yeah, this is their first. Beck uh listeners Beck is probably my favorite artist and has been for uh very decades. Yeah, I just love them. Okay, I've got my next one, and it's trained drops of Jupiter.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you are going to shit your pants. That's what I have, because I've got the black crows hard to handle. What do you think?

SPEAKER_02

I have such an affection for drops of Jupiter. Yeah, and I also have a very and I think you do too. You do not like hard to handle. I do not like hard to handle. Jack FM does like gimmicks, they love it's that one song that's like really fast. Yeah, god.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I know who I hope wins that one, but not mine.

SPEAKER_02

I yeah, in my heart, I know, but then also is it Jack FM?

SPEAKER_01

That's right. I mean, we'll we'll go over these to make sure that you're educated in your votes. You're not voting on what's the better song to make sure that that's clear. We cannot stress that enough, people. I'm looking at this list so far. I don't know. I don't know how it will shake out. Well, next round, I have soft cell tainted love. Great Jack FM energy versus blues traveler hook.

SPEAKER_02

Not runaround, people, but hook. Hook. Again, suck it in, suck it in, suck it in. That's that's like a unit.

SPEAKER_01

I I love hook. I think hook is a fantastic song, especially a song about songwriting, I guess. I I mean no I'm a I'm a big hook fan.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think you get the song though. I don't think it's about songwriting, but let's see. Oh Match 7, Food Fighters, Learn to Fly. Oh, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

But I got cake, short skirt, long jacket. All right, I'm not gonna say mine. Learn to fly might win this whole thing. Learn to fly is strong. It's okay, listeners. We're all on the same team. We're trying to find the most Jack FM song. And for that next round, I've got Men Without Hats Safety Dance.

SPEAKER_02

And I have Tom Petty, Mary Jane's Last Dance. Match nine, 32. It's Creed Higher.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh, I know. Creed higher versus Blink 182, all the small things.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, okay. So if this were Pokemon, as we know about as well as sports, I just played the the fucking fire cat. The I played the the water tiger.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. And what would you say Blink 182 All the Small Things is then? Like uh Bulbasaur.

SPEAKER_02

That one I know.

SPEAKER_01

That's a real one.

SPEAKER_02

Pokemon number yeah, he's like number one, I think, on the list. Because they number them.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay. I know less about Pokemon than I know about sports. Okay. I can I can draw So are you saying what did you call Creed?

SPEAKER_02

The fire the water tiger or the Fire Cat or Is that a is in your mind is that a good thing? I mean, like that is one that can kill other Pokemon, I think. And correct me if I'm what I'm saying is Creed is a Creed hire is a strong yeah, it's a really strong contender.

SPEAKER_01

Is that like a final form Pokemon? Is what do they call Pokemons when they like it?

SPEAKER_02

Well, they call it evolution, which like a thing that's alive cannot evolve into a thing mid-life.

SPEAKER_01

Like maybe nine tails.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, maybe in a million years your kid will be different. But um I'm with you on that. I don't like that. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

All right, match 10. Bom, bow. Bon Jovi, it's my life. Fuck me. Talk about it. Talk about it.

SPEAKER_02

Talk about a nine tails. Talk about a leaf dog, a ghost horse.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I can't wait for the Pokemon people to get in the comments.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I have the cure, just like heaven.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. I mean, I definitely have a favorite of those two, but okay, so we're on match 11. Green Day, when I come around.

SPEAKER_01

Don't sing too much, because we we we might have to get licensing, because that sounded just like Billy Joe Armstrong. Yeah, this episode. We're gonna get the lawyers all over this one. Green Day When I Come Around versus Rolling Stones start me up. Oh okay. What was that? What was that sigh about?

SPEAKER_02

Was that a you'll you'll hear you'll hear in episode 11 or 12.

SPEAKER_01

Talk about a tee up. I mean, people are coming back now.

SPEAKER_02

I don't want to make enemies on episode one.

SPEAKER_01

Right. We did make an enemy with stained right away, but all right. Matchup 12. What do I have? Clash, should I stay or should I go?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, and I have Dexty's Midnight Runners, come on, Eileen. Okay. Sometimes you have to go for the song that the band is known for.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like they do not have another big radio play. They have a it's a great album if you haven't listened to it, but they're that's that's the song.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna do some research, but I think the lead singer of Dexty's Midnight Run is a prolific songwriter. They were like a supergroup. You may learn a little thing or two, not just about jactical magic, Pokemon about yeah, Pokemon. Okay, so I have this is match 13. Okay, Billy Idol, Moni.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. Versus the new radicals get what you give.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, that song means a lot. I I think that may belong to the world, not just Jack F. So would you say the other one is more? Someday we'll know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, someday we'll know. Because I always did the Captain of the Titanic cry. You can really go into both songs with that part.

SPEAKER_00

Did the Captain of the Titanic cry? You got the music in you.

SPEAKER_01

That is a perfect transition. Like they should consider doing that in their concerts. People be like, hell yeah, both songs. Yeah, but then they'd have to pause for the ovation to stop. Yeah, that's true. I'm looking forward to that one. Match 14. Here we go. I got Queen David Bowie under pressure. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

That's a biggin. Talk about super group. And I have Aerosmith living on the edge. Oh.

SPEAKER_01

Just when I see them, when I see them against each other, I have to just take a moment. Oh, that's I mean, okay, yeah. Okay. This this list is giving me more anxiety than I thought it would. It it's really fun, but uh the I'm nervous about these songs getting cut.

SPEAKER_02

Then don't look at the bone yard because some jack babies are definitely not chosen, but um jack babies. These are all our jack babies. Okay, my turn. Match 15. Eurythmix. Here comes the rain again. I can just hear that. Like, oh, that sounded like Layla, but uh yeah, some sort of uh however that song sounds, you can hear it. What do you got? Yeah, I have Tony Basil, Basil, hey Mickey. Friggin' Jack loves like a formerly novelty song.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think it's on our list, but walk like an Egyptian was that kind of vibe.

SPEAKER_02

It is, and that if that were on, that would be far and away my favorite song of this tournament. Excellent song. I love the Bengals. But okay. All right.

SPEAKER_01

I've got Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N' Roses.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, and then I have well controversial. Harvey Danger, Flagpole Sitta. Interesting. Mm-hmm. Okay. Let me play mine. I've got Four Non Blondes. What's up? I'll tell you what's up. Someday by Sugar Ray. Okay. Okay. Four Non Blondes is very much a sing-along. A lot of groups of girls do enjoy. This one's a karaoke classic. Busting out to Four Non Blondes. What's up? Sugar Ray Someday is kind of like, I don't want to say they're victory lap, but it's more of a retrospective or something. There's like a solemnness to it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they've really settled into their new vibe as a band. I like victory lap. I think that's a nice way to put it because they're just like, we've nailed this now. We we've got the formula. They have confidence. And it's second act, Jack. Yeah. I don't mean to put my own sway on anything, but what I'm about to drop, all I'm gonna say is that for me, match 18 is going to be important for every listener to come back to for Santana and Rob Thomas smooth. Fuck.

SPEAKER_02

Not to, I don't even want to say. That might as well be called Rob Thomas Jack FM. Yeah. Oh, poor okay. Mine is Pat Benatar love is a battlefield. Oh it certainly will be.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, sweet. It certainly will be this week. It certainly will be. There will be there will be some corpses this week. Yeah, she'll be collecting your loved ones. Pat Benatar. Oh man. That's a shame.

SPEAKER_02

It's a be wonderful song, but I can picture it playing on Jack FM.

SPEAKER_01

I can picture all the votes it's not gonna get. Alright, so for matchup 20, I have Third Eye Blind, Never Let You Go.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Not semi-charmed life, people.

SPEAKER_01

Which by the way, I had no idea the lyrics to that song when I was younger. Recently went through them again, and I was like, wow, this song is very inappropriate for me to be singing it all the time when I was. You'll have to listen to it on your own time though, because it's not part of this playlist. What do you got?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you're right. Yeah, that'll be done off the clock. Don't worry. Okay, so you had third eye blind, never let you go, versus John Mayer waiting on the world to change. Waiting on the world to change. Weird song. Okay. Now I have for match 21 cold play clocks.

SPEAKER_01

Took us this long to get a cold play. I have orchestral maneuvers in the dark if you leave. You leave. Okay, match 22. Sticking with uh Mi 80s. We got a little naked eyes, always something there to remind me.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, versus, as previously discussed, Dave Matthews band. What would you say? Yeah, what would you say? Well, I mean, I do love Naked Eyes, always something there to remind me. Sandy Shaw, or what's her name? She works with Burt Baccarat all the time. Perfect. Dion Warwick. Yes, that's I think she I think that's her song. That or Sandy Shaw, I don't. Okay, anyway. Yeah, all right. I got a good one here.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I got a water eagle. Um stank, the reason.

SPEAKER_01

Oh the reason is because you're the most Jack FM song on the list. Pretty much. Um, well, we got a Huba Stank versus Jimmy World the Middle. That is where I would land this one. That intro. And especially picture that with one of the Jack FM bumpers. Mm-hmm. Okay. Match 24. I got Run DMC featuring Arosmith, walk this way.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. And I've got Blind Melon, no rain. Oof. Sad story, but sad story, but match 25. Aha! Take on me.

SPEAKER_01

Who is taking them on? That one near and dear to my heart. Um, and I'm putting it up against one also near and dear to my heart. Counting crows, hanging around.

SPEAKER_02

Hanging around is quintessential. Second act. I can't articulate it, but there's something so Shrek about hanging around. Right. And they've written songs specifically for Shrek soundtracks.

SPEAKER_01

It's really, I don't think it's on our list, but Steal My Sunshine, like this Hanging Around and Steal My Sunshine have the exact same kind of vibe. Like another one where you can mash them up. The new radical should consider that too.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I the it's it's got the same top-down driving along the PCH to Malibu.

SPEAKER_01

Did I did I ever tell you that I saw him driving around on sunset and he was in a top-down convertible that he was much larger than, and his dreads were just kind of flying in the wind? And yeah, I just like a power wheels? What do you mean he was much larger than? He was just he was over the windshield. It was like a little sports car, and he was okay, like a roadster. Yeah, like a yeah, and I imagined that this is what he was listening to. Well, he was listening to Steal My Sunshine, and yeah, he was like, I think I could do something with this.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Did that come out first? Steal My Sunshine came out first. Yeah. I feel like Steal My Sunshine was like a 97, 98.

SPEAKER_01

There's this whole period of Count and Crow, and we can get this isn't a Count and Crow podcast, but what song did they do for Shrek?

SPEAKER_02

Come on, come on.

SPEAKER_00

Or like, what's the story?

SPEAKER_02

It's got great surf beat, but like Oh yeah, that's a good song.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe we should just do a Kevin Crows podcast. That'll be on the Patreon.

SPEAKER_02

I do want to say, real quick, AHA Take On Me has a very well-known music video. The director of that music video went on to direct Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Really? Yeah, that dirty, ugly looking movie. Hey. It is. It's just kind of dingy.

SPEAKER_01

But we both have a real affinity for that movie.

SPEAKER_02

You named, like, didn't you like name all your pets Donatello? Yeah, I just I'll name everything Donatello. Yeah. Where Donatello's our favorites. I don't like how they Do you know why he's our favorite? Do you know why? Why do you think? No, I was just gonna say he's our favorite because he does machines. I was just gonna say, I don't like how they've reinvented him as a total nerd. Yeah, he does machines. Donato does machines is just one of many things Donatello can do. Like that's that's an oversimplification of Donatello's abilities.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm with you.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, there are other reasons why we like Donatello.

SPEAKER_01

He's just do you think that they couldn't say he was an inventor because people think of Leonardo da Vinci as an inventor? So they were like, Well, he just he does machines. Yeah I want to I I want to get Chuck Laurie. Did you know that Chuck Laurie wrote that song? He wrote the theme song, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, don't you want to get him on the phone to see that's everyone hear his take, yeah. Maybe it'll be like, sorry, I had to write that before the show came out.

SPEAKER_01

Like sorry, I had no idea what these things were.

SPEAKER_02

I had a one-page bio of all the characters. Yeah. Uh I did the best I could. I hadn't seen the show yet. I had to rhyme something with teens. That's a great point about Leonardo actually doing machines. Or like, well, he did pictures of machines. Yeah. And fucking invent those helicopter chairs.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you're just like, this would be a cool thing someday, maybe. Coming in next for Batch 26, we got you two straight to your iPod. Beautiful Day. Was that on that album? No.

SPEAKER_02

This one was like maybe two before that. Okay. Well, this is like I think Beautiful Day was their first song after coming back from like just being really weird, like doing some weird tours, wearing like costumes. Bono had that fake muscle costume shirt. Um then like when they came back with Beautiful Day, they were like in t-shirts, and then everybody loved this album so much that they were Was Vertigo also on this album? I think that was the one that got given to us without our permission. You two, beautiful day versus Violent Femmes, Blister in the Sun. Mm-hmm. Okay. And then I got, well, EverClear, I will buy you a new life.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna go ahead and put in mine, Jane's addiction, been caught stealing.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Big time Jack energy. I can't articulate it at the moment, but I know it. Like the Supreme Court with pornography. I know it when I see it.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Coming up next. Weezer. Say it ain't so. Say it ain't so. Okay, say it ain't so versus Oops, I didn't copy it. The lesser-known Britney Spears song. Say it ain't so versus collective soul. Shine.

SPEAKER_01

There's a permanent place in my brain for Shine. I'm not saying that in a good way. Yeah. I it takes me right back to the where I heard it, and then years later, when somebody pointed something out to me that it does musically, now I can't unhear it, and it makes my blood boil.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I can't wait to hear that. Damn. 28 weeks to hear that one. Or no, I'm sure you'll I'm sure you'll have no problem remembering that when the episode comes, but I was gonna say put it in the notes, but you got this. Okay, we got four matches left, guys. It is Tupac with Dr.

SPEAKER_01

Dre, California Love. What better to go against West Coast hip hop classic than REM, it's the end of the world.

SPEAKER_02

Again, gimmicky song. Like a fast, hard to remember. Like we all love Yellen Leonard Bernstein.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. That's what we know about that song. Alright, match 30. Have you ever wondered what it's like? Everlast.

SPEAKER_02

Everlast, what it's like. Uh it's just I I feel like the 90s had a lot of parables like like TLC Waterfalls, where like maybe just those two, but every verse was like a new sad sack, a new sob story. Also, it was never I was gonna say it's never their choice, but no, that one guy had unprotected sex in Waterfalls. So he had no board. Um, okay, Everlast, what it's like versus matchbox 20, 3 a.m. It's delicious. That's a delicious one. Delicious. We got two laps. Match 31, uh-huh, Sublime, Santa versus Joan Jet. I love rock and roll. We sh we do though.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, we really do love rock and roll.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so I have Everclear, but I also have Santa. I I just something about Sublime. I just I don't like their fans, I think. Like if you love Santeria, I don't love you, I don't think.

SPEAKER_01

Just a real quick aside. When we first moved to California, we moved there in 2009. So that was well past what I believed was the Sublime era of life. Los Angeles did not have that same opinion. Certainly, certainly not Jack FM because I have never heard people so excited to hear a band.

SPEAKER_02

I was seeing t-shirts like day one we were here. And same with um, same with red hot chili peppers. They're they're local boys, done good.

SPEAKER_01

I feel very similarly to you about Sublime, but all right. Our last matchup, Mass 32. I'm coming in with Rick Springfield, Jesse's girl.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, and then ladies and gentlemen, drum roll. Your final contender for the winner of that rock and roll hall of fame thing is Lincoln Park in the N. In the end, we need Lincoln Park. That's kind of my blind spot. I wasn't a new metal or something. I needed a sense of humor with with music, a little self-awareness, right?

SPEAKER_01

But that's that's why you were a big biscuit head.

SPEAKER_02

You were always a chocolate starfish fan. And chocolate starfish and like hot dog water, or yeah, yeah. Okay, I do remember that, but I I didn't think like we're having fun. So so there they are.

SPEAKER_01

There are the 32 matchups.

SPEAKER_02

That was the tourney mint. So, like, next episode we will get to match number one. Red hot chili peppers, other side. Very strong, not to just tease the next episode, but that is a very strong matchup. That is something you're gonna want to be a part of. Right. And here's how you can be a part of it. So you're gonna go to our Instagram account. Our IG handle, our Instagram at JacticleMagic. Just one word, jactical magic, no underscores. I was able to secure Jactical Magic. Did you have to buy it from someone? I finagled with somebody's like grandkids, like whoever is the uh the steward of the. It was fine. I I spent some time with them. It's fine. They're they're nice. God bless.

SPEAKER_01

Um, yeah, so you're gonna go to our Instagram at Jactical Magic, and you are going to find a poll.

SPEAKER_02

As you're listening to this, the poll is out, and it will stay open until midnight of the day before we record. We will let you know that day. Check the stories for the first day or two, and then it'll be pinned. It'll be pinned to the first picture in the grid, and it'll also be uh in the highlights. Any one of those ways will be votable. That is the only way to vote on this song. We do have TikTok, we do have YouTube, we do have email. You have email? You're on email? Yeah, I uh yeah, I just got it. I've been I've been sending e-letters to all of my um relatives.

SPEAKER_01

That's so that's so thoughtful.

SPEAKER_02

But anyway, you can only vote on the Instagram account at Jactical Magic. If you throw one in the comments of YouTube, it's worthless. You're wasting your time.

SPEAKER_01

And ours, to be honest, because you know we're gonna be scrubbing those comments for some compliments.

SPEAKER_02

And you're yeah, leave it for how what such cuties we are. But yeah, and you're encouraging other commenters to give their votes, so you're really wasting time and you're causing others to waste our time. Here's a here's a little something though. Even though you can only vote on Instagram, we have decided you can call us and leave us a voicemail at the Jactical Magic Hotline that is 424-666-1711. You can call us and leave us a voicemail. You can use this opportunity to campaign for which song you think has more Jack FM vibes that week. So, why would anyone call a phone number and plead their case on a song's behalf? Well, we'll count it as a vote. You can vote on Instagram, then you can leave a voicemail. So that means you can vote twice that week. So that should give you incentive to call and leave a voicemail. I'm not I'm not taking texts, by the way, because one This is a landline. I can't. I don't get text, it'll bounce back, but we will play your voicemails on the podcast. So don't don't reveal any personal information. You don't want to be broadcast because we will not bleep, we will not edit, we don't do that. Um that's on you. So if you say something, it's going on there. So yeah, that number for voicemails, not text, for 666-1711. Last bit of business, jacticalmagic at gmail.com. You can email us any relevant anecdotes. Maybe Joan Jett, a good tipper. Maybe you went to a Santana concert and he was too drunk to finish the set. Or maybe third eye blind is your dad. Well, a whole man. We want to hear that. We want to know that. We want to hear that. Uh we may read it, or we may just may just summarize it and then credit you. So again, don't put any personal information. Okay, that's that's the information, that's the bit of business. You got anything?

SPEAKER_01

Nope. I just can't wait to start this tournament. And you know, this has been a long time coming for us, and it's beautiful to look at. It's it's it's it's gonna be spectacular. And it's uh it's very special.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm gonna I can't wait to go listen to these songs. I can't believe I'm saying that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, that that's that's true. Of our own accord, we are actively choosing to do these songs. Okay, so join us next week when we decide the winner of our very first matchup, red hot chili peppers, other side, versus Lenny Kravitz, fly away. Vote on Instagram now at JacticalMagic. And yeah, once again, my name is Amelia Skinel, and I'm Cooper Willis. And this has been InstaLen.
