23. Fall in love with Autumn

Brady Kent

I have written one or two poems in the past about Autumn, waxing lyrical in full arty mode. However, other than nice looking trees, I’m not keen on Autumn. It spells the end of summer and the start of winter , which I’m not keen on in the UK. It’s one of the reasons I travel a lot. Some see Autumn as a unique season, a time of great beauty and transition. Green turns to red and brown and the natural light softens. It’s also somewhere between too hot and too cold. The food served up changes, as tastes change and seasonal products appear on the shelves. It’s often when farmers harvest fruits such as apples. In the USA it means thanksgiving and of course children love Halloween.

The ‘Thin Viel’ is associated with Autumn, whereby the living and spiritual world come together. Some see it as a time to welcome back the souls of the dead or paying respect to ancestors. Symbolically it is seen as time to let go and a time when day and night are in balance. Some say it’s a critical part of the eternal cycle of life and death. Finally, it's a time for mystical creatures and fairies.

In the UK,600,00 babies a year are born a year with 25% in Autumn. September is the most common birth month, which means hanky panky the previous December (probably over Christmas). Babies born in Autumn are considered  balanced, practical, wise, thoughtful nurturing and resilient. They are also supposed to love longer, and be more academic. In short if you're thinking of having  a baby get your glad rags on in late December !
