25. Motherhood is all out war

I’m often challenged or I challenge myself to write a song about a subject I know very little about. I do quiet a bit of research first, so its and education for me but staring at  a blank page he still terrifying. One such subject is the gay community and in particular lesbian women. Where do on earth do you start as a middle class, white male from  middle England !

Around 2.1m people in the UK between 16-24 ,identify as LGB, that’s about 10.5%. The big rise is in bisexual people. Only 2.8% are gay men and 1.2% lesbian females. The numbers are much higher than in say 2018 when only 1.2m were regarded as LGB versus 2.1m now.

The divorce rate for most people is 8.6 per 1000 couples. For Gay men its slightly lower at 7.4 but for lesbian women it much higher at 11.2. It’s thought this is because  women in general start divorce proceedings, rather than men. Also, lesbian relationships have a much shorter courtship period, and finally they may under more pressure from society, particularly when it comes to children. Approx 1 in 5 same sex couples adopt children.

Same sex women meet in specific bars ( e.g. SHE SOHO), social events ( e.g. L Community) and online networks’( e.g. Hinge, Tinder etc). There are also gay pride festivals and weekends such as L fest and Out and Wild. In the USA there is Girls in Wonderland and The Ella festival in Spain. 54% of all people are positive about the gay community as the numbers grow and the legal framework improves. Society is increasingly accepting of the LGB population

I wanted this song to be very relaxed and humorous, rather than attempt something serious with my complete lack of knowledge. I also wanted to reflect the stats , like how difficult it is to find a partner and stay together – its all I had to go with !

They say you endure rather than enjoy jazz. Well, I like the more modern forms of jazz, like smooth jazz. By the way my favourite is Lisa Stansfield, what a voice, I would love to have seen her at Ronnie Scoots. I also like Nina Simone.
