Court is now in session.
SPEAKER_00Do you want to open the show today? Do I want to? I mean, I guess I can. I mean, how is everyone today? How are you, Amy?
SPEAKER_01I'm great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's March. It's my husband's birthday.
SPEAKER_01And happy birthday to him. Happy birthday. Welcome back to the Beauty Files. This is uh what are we on? This is episode three?
SPEAKER_00This is episode three. Um Nice Day Out. It is a nice day.
SPEAKER_01Yesterday it was very nice. It was beautiful out yesterday. 20 degrees cooler. It's like 40 out.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01What's the saying about March? In like a lamb, out like a lion, or is it vice versa?
SPEAKER_00I have no idea. I feel like where we live, it's just you just never know what you're gonna get.
SPEAKER_01That's true. This is also this is the weather corner. I think uh Monday's forecast is calling for snow.
SPEAKER_00I know, right? Uh snow, and then it's supposed to get to 70s um during this this week at some point for like two days and lots of rain.
SPEAKER_01That's wild. We're having an internet outage, so I can't check anything. So hopefully everything we talk about today, we're just gonna be the authority in the space because we're not fact-checking anything. No. So it's fine. I mean I don't know why. I don't know why. We just this is it's fine.
SPEAKER_00It is what it is. How was your Hershey kiss? My Hershey Kiss was great and definitely not like the nasty candy that you had given me in the past. So it's true.
SPEAKER_01I I I have been known to give Rachel some um what we call that? Experimental candy. I went to Hershey Park um over, I guess it was like Christmas time, and I got there's Reese's, right? It was it was um sugar cookie Reese's Reese's, yes. Oh, it was bad. It was really bad.
SPEAKER_00And I love Reese's. I do. They're like my favorite candy, and she had these out in a bowl, and I decided I was gonna try it. And I don't know how I swallowed it, if I'm being honest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I should promise I did not tell her they were different and they were crunchy. And it just I couldn't stop eating them though. Even though I didn't like them, I could not stop eating them. So I guess I guess Hershey's is doing something right. Or uh, well, yeah, re well, Hershey is Reese's.
SPEAKER_00You know, I never wanted to eat another one again. I was like, mm-mm.
SPEAKER_01So I ate them all. So today, uh, this podcast is brought to you by the stash that I have in my refrigerator, and it is the Hershey Kisses with almonds. If you are not eating them with almonds, I don't know what you're doing. You have a problem. Yeah. So that's how I feel very strongly about that. That is something we have just forever in our refrigerator is a bag of Hershey's with almonds.
SPEAKER_00So and speaking of Hershey, I was at Hershey last night for that journey concert. How was that? It was fun, it was very loud.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So the bass is their final tour. And I most of them are late 50s to mid-70s. So there's only one guy that was, I think, like maybe in his 40s. And the rest of these guys, I mean, that's all they did. There was no cover bands or anything. It was just them. Like an opener, you mean. There was no or yeah, it was just the cover like for a good two hours and 15 minutes. Okay. So I'm not sure how many um Red Bulls or energy. Stronger, whatever someone gave them. Um, because I will say, majority of the people um that I encounter these days that are 60s and 70s are not able to keep up that energy level for that period of time. And the singer um he was really, really, really, really good. But I've never seen a man that is 58 years old bounce around a stage. And when I say bounce, he was literally jumping. Wow. I mean bouncing all around that stage and singing at the top of his lungs and not missing notes, like smooth singing for two hours and 15 minutes. So, you know, he must have been on something. Yeah. Because did you last? Did you leave early? No, we left right at the end. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I do really like to leave early. Yeah. Big fan.
SPEAKER_00Um, we left right at the end as soon as they had like confetti go off. Yes. And uh I looked at the group that I was with and I was like, get up, get up, it's time to go. And they all just kind of like stared at me as it for a second, and I was like, if you don't get up, we're never gonna get out of here.
SPEAKER_01It's true. You'll you'll be there. You're still there, actually. If if you didn't get up, we would have had to postpone today because you'd still be in line to exit.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And I had been there for a comedy show um probably two months back, and we our seating was on the floor. Uh-oh. So there was no like we waited until the very end because she the the my girlfriend that I went with, you know, she wanted to see all of it, which was fine. I also think it's harder to leave when you're vertically.
SPEAKER_01Well, that and a comedy show. Yeah. It is a little bit. It's not like there's a um a song change, you know. Yeah, see.
SPEAKER_02And anywhere in front of it. He probably would have been like, oh, I see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he probably would have made a comment about it. But um so we did not get out of there and we waited in line. It was like an hour to get out of there by the time that was sitting in the car. That wasn't like even exiting the building.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, because you text me. You text me at like 1 a.m. and you're like, we're getting something to eat. Yeah. Good luck with that. Yeah. Do you that was awful too? Do you remember? You just made me think of a movie. Do you remember the movie Nutty The Nutty Professor? Yes. Do you remember when he's his original self and he's at the comedy club, and he's like the the guy's like going around roasting everyone in the front, and he realizes, oh, okay, I gotta get up. So he gets up and he drops something and he bends over, and that's like the whole that's like my fear of any any time I see a comedian, and I'm like, I can't get up, I can't get up, I can't get up, because that's what I think. I think like like you just said, they're they're gonna comment, and you're it's just humiliating. Yeah. Yeah. So was your was your evening as entertaining or I wouldn't say it was as entertaining, not not even, but it was it was nice. We went um, we went to dinner, um, we went to a restaurant down near Han Valley, um, called the Milton Inn. And it was very loud, so maybe not as loud as your concert, but it was definitely it was packed. Um, so it was nice. Yeah. It was good. I'm not uh I feel pretty good today. Good. I had um two, they're called aviations. It's like my favorite cocktail, and it also looks it's like dark and moody, like it's just you're like, oh, okay. I understand why Amy drinks this this drink. Yeah. But um, I am a rule breaker because the drink is actually supposed to be made with aviation gin. And I don't like gin. So I get it with Tito's, and so it's like I want an aviation, but I want it without aviation. I want it with Tito's, but it's really good. It's um it's like maraschino cherry like liqueur and then creme de violette. It's a really pretty drink, it's like a smoky purple.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's so good. I could go for one right now. Yeah, I didn't drink any alcohol, which I'm glad I didn't because it was very, very loud and lots of flashing lights.
SPEAKER_01Well, and let's be honest, those concert venues, it's like beer, wine, and a in a box. Like it's just so I don't drink it this time.
SPEAKER_00My boyfriend got two twisted teas, the large cans.$26 for two terrible twisted teas. Like but the larger cans, I think they're like 16-ounce cans or something, but still, I was like, 20, like you can get a case of that for$34.
SPEAKER_01Actually, it's it's no different than the restaurant we went to. My husband ordered um a whiskey and one, like I don't even think they gave them. I think it's like one and a half ounces, that's standard, was the price of a bottle of Jameson. Maybe not the whole bottle of that whiskey, but still. So I guess it's we both got scammed last night. It's fine.
SPEAKER_00But again, it comes back to Hershey, so shout out to Hershey.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to Hershey. That was good. I um I did not sleep well last night. Um, while I f I fell asleep with a hair clip in my hair, which I I don't know. I was just too tired. Like, you know, when you're just so tired and you know it's an issue, you're like, I just can't be bothered. It's like when you have hot feet and you're wearing socks and you're like, I should really take these off, and then you don't, yeah, and then you regret it. So the the hair clip broke in my sleep. So like I I go to take it out this morning and I see the all the little teethies things are missing, and I'm feeling and I'm like, I'm never gonna find these because I have hair extensions and the I had the beads. So I uh they're in there somewhere, they'll come out later.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. So they're just embedded in my hair, I think, because it was like two, it's like two of the prongs. They're just in there.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. That's gonna jab you later. Probably how you're gonna find them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's fine. But I had a funny, I guess, I don't know, I must be inspired by this podcast. I woke up at some point in the middle of the night with like a this is funny. You should talk about this on the podcast. This is more of this is it now. This is this is our full-time job. Um I was laying in bed being like, alright, how can I, how can I award this? No, I wanted to ask you, have you ever fallen victim of your mom's spit on her hands touching you, whether it's a hair, an eyebrow hair, a strand of hair, have you ever been licked? No, but I have done it to my childhood. So I you tell me, I have no idea why this thought came to me, but I was like, this is funny and relatable because I did not like the uh what are they called? Like the the hair wax, like the the little wand now that you can like put your little flyaways away. I just I would have really liked a product like that when I was a kid, and I would have avoided the here, come here, come here, and you watch your parent and they're licking their thumb and they're coming to you, and you're just like and I've done it to my child too, but now I have discovered hair wax and it's or a hair jet, yeah, whatever the sub the materializer substance, but I just thought kids have a good these days, even though you just said your child has fallen victim, and so is mine, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's more if it's like something that's really stuck on their face, and again, not ideal because I know how gross that is, and I mean it's being in the world, but no different than kissing on the cheek.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it kind of is.
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah, you're not necessarily putting it on there intentionally, yeah. I guess that's true.
SPEAKER_01It's not like licking, yeah, it's um yeah, it's a weird turn. All right, then there let's abort this conversation.
SPEAKER_00You know, when it comes to, you know, that brings it into into the whole skincare, it's like I tell people all the time do not touch your face with your hands. Just don't do it. Just don't do it. And I move, um, there's so much bacteria and just oil and d dirt and just debris on your hands that we don't disgusting people. Yeah, that we don't realize, and even if you're like, oh, it doesn't look dirty or it doesn't when you go to touch your face, like that all transfers. And so again, like you bringing that up, it really makes me go, oh, I really did that to my kid, didn't I?
SPEAKER_01Well, their skin is I don't know, resilient. We'll go with that. So uh last week we we had a pretty serious like first episode. We talked about confidence, which is hard to tackle. So there's layers as we were uh doing our outline for this podcast. Um and the first layer was your inner, right? Working on the inside. So if you if you missed that, go back because I think it was good. I don't remember now, but I think it was good. We were we were rolling. Um, so you mentioned skincare, so I do feel like that is kind of like the next layer, if you will, of of things that you can do to in improve your confidence, right? So let's literally think of your think of us as like a a diagram you see in like a in like a science book, right? Like you've got your all your like skin layers, you know. So first layer is inner inner confidence or your inner self. The next layer out is then your actual skin, skin health. So we did touch on this last time because we were talking a little bit about, you know, like things you put in your body, right? Movement, you know, things like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a little bit about makeup applications while so makeup will come later.
SPEAKER_01It does. Because it's this is still not you need a good foundation for your foundation. Correct. So here I am. We'll we'll use Nancy. Nancy is our Nancy's gonna be our uh our name of a person that we're gonna use a lot. Here's Nancy, okay? Nancy is just working on herself, okay? She she joined a gym, she went to the grocery store, she, you know, she's she's working on complimenting others and and doing things right. Doing things, yeah. So now she's she's in Sephora, and she's in the skincare area, and she's looking at like Neutrogena, and then she sees like drunk elephant, and she's looking in, she's looking at the price points. Should should she stay in Sephora or should we guide her somewhere else? Or what should Nancy do?
SPEAKER_00Here's the thing with Sephora is that there are, I do believe, even with like Ulta and stuff, they do have some licensed uh aestheticians um that are there. Um and they also have reps for each of the brands as well. So unless that person really truly is getting a whole analysis of your health and knows your skin and your background, they may be able to guide you as to what their favorite is, or if you're like, hey, I'm looking for this to what that is.
SPEAKER_01Um, let's say this. Let's say, all right, Nancy, she's in there. She's like about to turn 50, okay? Yeah. So she's got some sunspots that she's not happy with. She's noticing, oh, I really I'm getting some deep set wrinkles now. Like I really see them now. Like I'm, hmm. And let's say she is noticing, oh, I'm just a little like just a little loss of volume. What should she do? Those are, first of all, these are complaints I have about myself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um so the first thing you want to do, first of all, is are you use are they using a sunscreen? All right. So definitely not.
SPEAKER_01She has no idea what sunscreen is.
SPEAKER_00She grew up in the whatever era that would be where they just laid in baby oil and then just so first of all, you know, we're gonna make sure we're getting her a really good sunscreen and one that's going to protect her.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Second of all, we need to know, are you actually washing your face? Because believe it or not, there are many people who will be like, Yeah, um, I feel like anytime I get a soap or anything like that and I wash my face, I just break out, or it just is irritating, or it's just or it's really tight, and I don't like that I'm dry. Dove, or it's dial, or you're using CeraVe or Cedophil, or you know, another brand that's just doing absolutely nothing for you. So we need to find you a good cleanser. Um, I don't love Dermalogica. It is in Sephora, it's in Ulta. Um, drunk elephants, I've used that before. I have used Dermalogica before. I've used um honestly, I, you know, as a kid, the Neutrogenas and the Oh, do you remember the little beads that were the Noxema, the number Noxema, like all of those things. Um, so again it came down to packaging and what was affordability. And the other thing too is like normally you're going in there, if they're going into Sephora, they're probably if they're looking at drunk elephant, they know they're gonna spend some amount of money. So let's be honest. That's that's true. Um if they're looking at Neutrogena, like okay, guys, if you go into Safara or Alta and you need a brand and you don't have the money, don't get Cedophil, don't get CeraVe, um don't go to La Roche Pose. Um I was gonna say, what's a really good, like there it's a lower Yes, you know, but it's I hate the term drugstore, but you know what I'm the ingredients in it aren't comparable to the other stuff, okay? So they don't have as many fillers. I if you if I had to say like this is the low level, like then get La Roche Pose, okay?
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00And just if that's what you can afford, do that. Do not do the Neutrogenas, do not do all the rest of it. Um I'm I mean, I'm trying to think I I think we'll have to go into a Sephora and Alta and kind of like look around at the brands and so are they using a product that has a retinol in it? Oh, probably not. Nancy's not.
SPEAKER_01She's she's new to this, but she's ready. She she's ready to make the investment.
SPEAKER_00So, you know, using something that has a retinol that's gonna help her skin cell turnover, that's not only gonna help with the fine lines and wrinkles, it's also gonna help with her texture. To a certain extent, it can help with pigment a little bit. Okay. Um, is it gonna rebuild her collagen that she wants, the elastin? Well, that's what she wants to do. So should she dip her toe into some procedures? She would then after she got on a good routine, start to dip her toe in procedures.
SPEAKER_01So you, I want to be clear, you're recommending build the routine before we even approach um In in her case, yes.
SPEAKER_00Because what people don't realize is like 80% of your skincare is what you're doing at home. So if you're not doing proper skincare at home and you're not wearing your sunscreen and you're not washing your face and you're not putting on a moisturizer at least, yeah, then there's really no point to go and do procedures. Will the procedures help you? Yeah, but you're not gonna get the longevity out of them, and then you're gonna be disappointed again. Um, so build up that's kind of like it's kind of like um working out and eating well.
SPEAKER_01Right. They work together technically, separately, but not really. And then when they're together together, it's like harm harmonious. Yes, you will get you'll see the change.
SPEAKER_00And again, like if I had to say one over the other, do good skincare. Okay, if I had to say, you know, if you're like I can only afford this or that, do good skincare because longevity, okay, you're in it for the long haul. This is something that's going to continue on with you.
SPEAKER_01And it'll be consistent.
SPEAKER_00It's consistent. And if you find the right products, affordability also. So there are people out there that are like, this is my budget. Okay, that's great. So let's find you, and and I've talked about this with clients as well. Let's say, you know, there we offer, you know, at my facility, we offer many different lines. Um, you know, lines that are gonna be more affordable for some, and then up to the higher end products that are more expensive.
SPEAKER_01Because I do think people get a little bit of sticker shock. They do, but they don't understand that there is a there is a quality difference here.
SPEAKER_00There is a quality difference, but I also tell people like, okay, we can use a lower end face wash.
SPEAKER_01Yes, you don't have to have the whole system.
SPEAKER_00So there are bits and pieces that we can mix and match for you. Like there are we we could have Have a great sunscreen from another line that works really well, and a great cleanser from another line that's lower, but like the serums that are really gonna help to transform your skin, or you know, something that has a peptide in it, or niacinamides, um, you know, uh, the antioxidants that are gonna help to block out the pollutants, um, you know, the HA, so the hyaluronic acids, um, the uh exosomes, the those kinds of things. The base of what is going to transform you isn't necessarily your cleanser and your moisturizer and your sunscreen. You know, you it's the additives, but it's always starting a routine and being consistent with a routine and then working up to it to kind of get you to where you need to be. Um, being, again, it's just like with diet and exercise, being consistent on a good skincare routine, seeing how it transforms your skin, doing the skincare routine for at least three months before you're like, it's doing nothing for me. It's not working. And a lot of people will not do skincare routines for three months, they'll try it for a week. Oh, it's it's I'm breaking out, or oh, it's doing this. And I'm like, no, what it's doing most of the time is it's bringing whatever is locked down deep in there to the surface. And you really do have to clear it out and continue going to get to where you want to be. Most people, it's like working out, like you start to work out. Um, and the one thing I'll say about working out is a lot of times you'll feel achy. Yeah. Okay, you'll feel achy, you'll be like, okay, it's working, it's working. Well, when somebody sees a spot appear on their face, they freak out and they're like, nope, eff it, I'm done. I'm not, I'm done. Like that's hit. You know, and that's you know, with your skincare, it's a little bit different. So it's like, okay, that spot and that achiness are the same thing.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh, so it's almost like you need to be excited that there's that you're some event on your face.
SPEAKER_00Almost, yeah. Now, again, if it's, you know, if your face is starting to swell, if you are getting severe cystic acne that is appearing, you're getting tiny little bumps all over your face that are just getting worse or not going away within a week. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So then you know that somebody's actually not working for you.
SPEAKER_00Our skin is what we call reactive. So most people are like, I have sensitive skin. No, you have reactive skin. So what are you reactive to? What are you allergic to? They're two different things. Yes. Um, I always tell people reactive skin is healthy skin.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so when I have somebody coming in and like I am doing a treatment to their skin and they're not doing anything, their skin isn't changing color at all. It's not swelling, it's not like it's doing like that.
SPEAKER_01That's I I'm like hear that.
SPEAKER_00Okay, it's dead. Like you are just your skin is just You're a cadaver. We need to wake it up. Like your ski, your cells are not doing what they need to do. There is no response. So, you know, response, seeing response, like a lot of times people will think that that's scary. For me, I'm like, oh, oh, you're gonna have a good treatment today.
SPEAKER_01Like you're gonna look good. You did microneedling on me, I don't know, maybe two sessions ago, and I was visibly swollen. Yeah. And you were very excited. I was. And how was your how did you look a couple of days later? I'll tell you what. It there is nothing like a microneedling glow. Yeah. Yeah, it's it's I don't enjoy the peeling, like the flakiness, the dryness. Yeah, yeah. But I mean, it's temporary, and now it's like, oh, okay. I like this.
SPEAKER_00You're like, okay. You know, people again, it's like that histamine response. And I'm like, oh, yeah, you know, okay, you're swollen, oh, you're red, you know, you're, you know, the edema in your skin is it's normal. Those are normal responses. Like, we expect to see some of that. Um, for some people, you may get a lot, for others, you may get nothing. And, you know, the older you are, the more health issues you have, the less you have done to your skin, the more sun damage you have. It's gonna take a while to get a response. It's not just going to happen after one or two sessions. Sometimes it doesn't even have to happen after three sessions because we're trying to reactivate new cell turnover and new cell growth.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I like this because uh shout out my mother-in-law, we're gonna talk about you again. Um, she had the appeal done by you, and she did like the the one. I think it's called the perfect derma derma.
SPEAKER_00The perfect derma peel, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yes, but she did the the higher, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The higher plus yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, comparing myself to her, obviously, she is older. She's in great health. She uses um, if I'm not mistaken, she uses like all natural like skincare. Um so when she did the peel, did not get the same response, not even close to what I had. She did have some peeling, but I was like, oh. Because she was ready. She was like ready for battle. She knew she's like, I'm gonna, my face is gonna be falling off. I'm like, I'm so excited for you, it's gonna be great. And then it was like, oh, definitely not the same response.
SPEAKER_00Is that why? So there's two different reasons. A lot of times, right before we do yours, we'll do a derma cleaning. So that's getting rid of the Vileous hair and 28 days of dense skin cell buildup. Um, it allows the product to penetrate a little bit more. Um, and so therefore, a lot of times when you do some sort of um uh exfoliation prior to appeal, you are going to have more of that effect. Okay, now that's true. We did do that and she did not. So that is one reason. Okay. The other reason is um, again, she's much older. Right. Um, she her skin probably because she wasn't doing things on a regular basis to help with skin cell turnover, um, not using products that are helping encourage that.
SPEAKER_01Would that be an example of we have to do another to wake up? Okay. Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_00You know, again, anything that you're doing in office a lot of times is gonna require a series. It's not just gonna be a one and done thing, unless you've already done a series. Right. And then absolutely you can go to maintenance. Um, or you're trying to treat something else, so you're in your a completely different procedure uh treatment plan. Um, but yes, the older you are, you know, people come in, and those are the people that typically are like, I want to look like this, one treatment and done. And you look at them and you say, Listen, I understand what you want, um, but what you want is unattainable in one treatment, one session. Um, you know, also you look at affordability, and some people want something that's going to fit a budget. And it's like, while I can do this, if you're not also doing this, then there's no point. And sometimes you can get people to understand that, and sometimes you can't. Um trying to get realistic expectations for different services and trying to understand what a client, a patient is looking for can sometimes be tricky because they may be showing you pictures saying, like, this is what I want. And you, as the professional, are looking at them saying, Okay, this is what I can do. And while they're showing you this picture, they're also telling you something completely different. And this happens often. They're saying, I want it to look like this, they show you this picture, and you're like, those two things do not align. And then as the professional, you're saying, This is what I think you should do. And sometimes you're just not on the same page. And at that point in time, like you have to decide, should you treat this person, or should you just say, you know what, let's revisit this later, or maybe, maybe it just our interaction isn't gonna fit, and that's okay. Um, but understanding what somebody's expectations are, what they truly are are looking for, or maybe they don't know what they're looking for, and being able to guide them in the right direction is why we are here.
SPEAKER_01All right, so okay, here comes um pick a name. Give me a name. Um, Susie. Oh, loves. I was gonna say Sally. We are we are aligned here. All right, let's say Susie. Okay, Susie's real big into TikTok. Okay, like she just cannot get enough between the cat videos, all the craziness that's going on in the world. She now she's fallen into the beauty algorithm. Okay, and she's like, she sees, she's like, okay, this is everybody's doing this, it's microneedling, whatever. Susie's been dealing with like hardcore acne for like a bit, and she's like, This is it. This is what the girls are doing, this is what I'm gonna do. Booking an appointment with Rachel, getting in there, and she's like, hey, I'm here for my night, microneedlings. I saw this person on TikTok, and they're like, This cured their acne. I'm having an active flare-up. Let's go. But what do you do?
SPEAKER_00Hard stop. That's all that's a hard stop. That's a hard no. Um, you cannot microneedle someone that has active acne. You cannot. Um anything invasive like that um is going to push that bacteria back into the skin. And then you're going to be gliding it along the skin. So you're going to be spreading it. Um, and that person is going to end up coming to you and saying, What did you do to my face? This looks awful. Um, why would you have treated me? How do I fix this? And it it creates a disaster. It's a disaster zone. So you went from just a small area, you know, small war zone you were able to contain, to now it is just, I mean, like this is a worldwide.
SPEAKER_01So what should she do instead? Is it more calming? Are we trying to ride out the breakout at the moment?
SPEAKER_00Like what so there's many different ways to approach it. I mean, if she's an older, an older woman, it's probably related to hormone. No, let's say she's I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Let's say she just turned 30.
SPEAKER_00So there's different stages in our life where our hormones change also. Um this is, I mean, it's all relative. So now you're at, you know, the age of child childbirthing. So uh your hormone levels are all over the place. Have you just had a a baby? Um, you know, are you breastfeeding? Are you um on um birth control? Are you, you know, what what is going on in your life? Are you high stress? Um, what are you eating? What are you what are you using on your face at home? What are you not using? Um, so let's just say she's never had a baby before. Um, she is currently on birth control. Um, her diet is average, you know, she's just not. So also the other thing I would want to know is, did you have childhood acne or is it adult acne? Okay, so those are those are different things. Um sometimes having acne as an adult can be a little more tricky than having it as a teenager. Um so it's honestly gonna come back to what kind of skincare routine are we gonna get you on? And that routine is gonna be again based upon their health history, so I can't necessarily say this is a one size fits all.
SPEAKER_01Um so I love this because I'm hoping the listener you're catching on. It is extremely individual. It is. And just buying a system that looks pretty is not really gonna be your ticket. Right. Just booking a procedure flippantly is not gonna be the move. So let's ask a more probably a more um broad question here. How does someone know if they should book with a dermatologist or a med spa when they want to have their skin assessed? Is one, is it really necessary to go to a dermatologist unless you're having like, I don't know, a rash or like something that's a little more like it's an emergency.
SPEAKER_00So first of all, the first thing I would say is like we are not, we're not doctors. Um, you know, ours.
SPEAKER_01Well no, I already said that in the first podcast. I we are not saying it again.
SPEAKER_00Okay, you know, so like uh, you know, the scope of practice that we have, you know, as aestheticians, um, as providers parallel to is is to treat what we see. Yes. Okay, so we cannot diagnose. We cannot diagnose, we cannot say like this is what you have. Right. Do I think that there is a place for a dermatologist if you have tried everything in a medical um in a med spa um and you have tried, you know, all the treatments that are offered to you and you've gone to a a really good, reputable place. Um, do I think that there is a place for dermatology? Absolutely. Skin is the largest part, uh the largest organ on our body. Okay, so it there are so many different conditions um that can be going on. And w our job as an aesthetician is first of all to to do our best to treat what we can see on the surface. Um, and to try to help you get it under control and manage it the best way that we know how. Um if again you're getting these treatments and we're noticing, like, you know, I just don't think it's enough, then we would probably say, like, you should go to a dermatologist. Also, you know, on the flip side, you dermatologists are great at treating conditions. Most dermatologists are not looking at, you know, the surface as well. Um, like they're not gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_01They might not care about the crepiness under your eyes.
SPEAKER_00Right. Right. Um, you know, you're telling them my skin is oily, and they're saying, okay, let's just strip it. Strip, strip, strip, strip, yeah, get out the yeah. You go to an aesthetician, and we're saying, okay, well, your pH of your skin is completely off, and the more you strip it, the more irritation you're causing. And the more irritation you're causing, the more acne you're causing so again, they're two separate entities. There's two different ways of looking at healing something. And so I think there is a place for both. I think it just depends on severity. Um, so like large cystic acne that is just, you know, we've tried skincare products, we've done a couple of peels and things, and it's just not um, it's not working. I mean, it could truly be you have to go and get an antibiotic, you have to get on some sort of treatment because what we're trying to do in office is just, it's just not enough. Um, I was on Accutane three different times. I had gone through the dermatologist, they had told me to do the stetophils and the cerevase and strip your skin and do this and do that. And I just my skin was always irritated. It was always irritated, it was always dry, it was always what I thought was oily, you know, my sebaceous glands were overactive, and it, you know, so acutane is pure vitamin A. And what it's supposed to do is it's supposed to pretty much kill off the sebaceous glands and stop them from being able to produce what they're producing, um, in turn helping the acne because the oil mixes with all the bacteria, and that it's just the it creates this world of what do I want to call it? Like um a bumpy desert, a very, very large, uneasy, you know, volcano-esque um situation for your face. And so vitamin A has a place, but it can also really, really hurt your internal organs. Um it's it's if you're trying to have a baby, you're not doing that. Um, it slows down the healing process. So it really should be used as a a last resort. Um, I had been on, you know, every topical as well as um uh oral antibiotic that they can put you on, which over time some things helped, but not for the longevity. And then because they started me so young, I actually became allergic. Oh my god. As an adult. And when I say allergic, like I truly have a reaction where my body will swell and I can't breathe and I cannot take. And there's a list of like six different um oral antibiotics that I cannot take, and it was because of overuse as a child. So what you know ended up being your solution? Finding, you know, going into this industry and finding products, learning what products were going to work, well, how they worked, and trial and error to see how it was going to affect me. Um the skincare lines that we use are skincare lines that I bring in because I've used them and I have found that they are helpful. Um, that for me especially, they don't irritate me. Um, I don't go into um having severe reactions that are just out of this world, um unnecessary, nobody wants to have. Um, and again, I'm a very reactive person. I also am a very allergic person. Um, so I take that into consideration when I'm using these products. Um and so for me, it was the trial and error also adjusting. So here's the thing: some skincare lines that worked for me when I was in my 20s and early 30s do not work for me anymore. That makes sense. So um while it is great to use a line for a long time, if you start to find that you're just not responding to it the same, it it's time to consider switching things over. Same with a workout. The same workout. While, you know, it's not anything. I will say what people don't realize is that our skin does like consistency. It does like the consistency, the structure. It does. But again, just like with everything, environment, um, you know, our body, what we're eating, our hormones, if we become ill, all of those things play a role in our skincare. And so what worked pre-pregnancy isn't necessarily gonna work post-pregnancy. What worked in your 20s isn't necessarily gonna work in your 40s. And again, like you're also trying to treat different conditions as you age. So these are all things that we take into consideration we look at. Same goes with treatment. Although I will say I microneedling is a treatment that I feel is for every age, as long as you're not in an active acne state, um, as long as, you know, your the products that you're using, um, if they are super active ingredients or peels or anything like that, as long as there's nothing that's going to um interfere or be um a my words are are not there today, um, a conflict of the the procedure. It is something that I think that everybody should do. It is the one thing that helped heal my scars, um, it helped with my large pores, um, it helps with regenerating the collagen elastin in the skin. Um, so it is one of those treatments that is very, very effective. Um, something that I think everybody should do. It will help other treatments work better and last longer.
SPEAKER_01Microneedling changed my skin for sure. Yeah. Like for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And what's nice too is you mentioned this earlier. Yes, a series of three is usually three to six. Yes, depending. Oh, that's true, depending. But then after that, quarterly, quarterly twice a year, yeah. That's that's your maintenance. And that's that's nice. Because a lot of people think, oh, it's like Botox, right? Like once I start, like I have to get it every well, you know.
SPEAKER_00And and again, there are people that like to do microneedling monthly, and for those people, you can, it's just depth. So there's so many different things. So people are like, oh, I can do microneedling at home. Can you? You can.
SPEAKER_01Um, but that's just like you're you're only getting the the safe at home right um uh what's like not parameter, but the there's a word. There's a word. You can't, it's not there. Yeah, I don't either way, you're not getting the professional grade. No. I guess that's what I'm trying to say. You're getting like the safest.
SPEAKER_00I mean They're not even doing it for the safest. Like they're saying, here you go, you can buy it, you can do this to your face. What I will say to most people too is needles matter. Regulated, I think that was the word. So the type of needles that you're so with microneedling, like you have to make sure the needles are appropriate and high-end, they're only supposed to be meant once for one person, never to reuse. You have to remember that you are gliding, depending on the type of microneedling that you're doing, um, you know, it's a gliding motion, um, but depth. So if you're not going to the appropriate depths or you're going too deep, first of all, it'll be very, very painful if you don't have the appropriate or the appropriate numbing solution. Um, and depth, like if you're not going deep enough, it's really not doing a whole lot for you. If you're going too deep, like you can start to kill fat cells. Um, so there's different things that people do not take into consideration. And again, the needles, if they're not made high-quality needles, they can also cause micro-tears in the skin. So micro-tears in the skin can actually over time make your skin look worse as opposed to better. So with all products, with all skincare treatments and procedures, and again, I'm not on TikTok. I am not on social media at all right now. Um, but I didn't have TikTok and watch TikTok because I feel like you go down a rabbit hole and you see all these people that are on there and like your everyday let's do this, let's make it cheaper at home. It's like hearing about people that are injecting themselves with Botox and fillers, and people do not realize like that is when it starts to become a problem. That is when um this industry um the regulations start to change too. Um, and i i people start to have adverse reactions. Um, so there is a fine line. And while I do think that there are some procedures that, you know, are fine to do at home or safe to do at home, um I also say be cautious. Be cautious of what you're doing, be cautious of um like if you're doing peels at like be cautious of the level that you're using a peel. If you're doing a light peel at home, go for it. Go for it. Like, you know, there i you're probably not gonna burn your face off and cause uh scarring and pigment issues. But if you're doing a medium to a high depth peel that should be done by a doctor and you're buying it overseas, like proceed with caution. Like, just because you can get it doesn't mean you should.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So that is my advice to anyone. Just because you can buy it, just because everybody's quote unquote doing it, it's kind of like if, you know, you tell your kids, like, oh, okay, if your friend told you to jump off the bridge, are you gonna jump off the bridge?
SPEAKER_01And just remember, you know, TikTok, Instagram, all of these social medias are free. And they're free for a reason. And that's because you are the product. So when you have an influencer telling you about the latest, the latest and greatest thing that she's doing, and she says, just click the link below. Or oh my gosh, I got you guys like I got the code, you know. Um, yeah, she's getting a kickback. So she was told to talk about this product, whether she believes in it or not. You have to trust in the fact that these are not integrous people, right? Especially with someone you don't know. Um, which I think is another reason that we were uh inf not influenced, um called, inspired to to do this podcast because we're not really, I mean, I want to say it's like we're yes, we're not in it to make money, but we are real people. Like you, for instance, you are where you are because of the issues that you had. Absolutely and that is what motivated you to so you've you've cracked the code, you figured it out. You're um what's the word? Oh my god, we were both like it was journey for you, and for me, I guess it's just the aviations. Um you're motivated for lack of a better word, but to to help people. You have a you have a different angle. It's it's passion. I guess that's the um you're not just some you're no like skincare company called you and they're like, hey Rach, um we need you to talk about this because you have really pretty skin and we really like looking at you. So we need you to talk about this and then have people buy it. Yeah. Because that's pretty much what's going on in social media.
SPEAKER_00It it is. And so for instance, um the dermatologist that I used to go to, we'll go back to that. So I was on acotine three times. That's right. Which let me tell you, that's not a normal thing. Okay. Oof. Like two times is a lot, but three times for as long as I was is excessive. And, you know, I am so glad that I still have a liver that functions. Um I d it did cause me to have IBS, and I also do have severe dry lips. Um, so those were my side effects. I'm very fortunate that I didn't get anything worse. But they used to always say to me, we're gonna put you on a billboard. Because I was one of those people that responded so well in their eyes. Um, and they were just, you know, it was like the joke was like, oh, we're gonna put you on the billboard for accutain. And it's like, I would never want to, you know, again, I was I was a teenager, I was young, and at first I thought it was, oh, that's really nice of them. Right, that's flattering. And then as I got older, I was like, no, I would never really want that.
SPEAKER_01You were the one out of ten that it worked, but because they got one now is deported on the board. But that's the end.
SPEAKER_00You know, that was after the third time. It's like, oh, we'll put you on a billboard now that we know, oh, you're good. Um, so you know, you do have to take that.
SPEAKER_01This reminds me, this is a little bit dark, I'm sorry, but I just learned to say you're a cancer survivor, you just have to make it I think it's nine, nine years past chemo. And that's it. If you I told you it's getting dark. If you pass away at number at year ten, you are still labeled a cancer survivor. And they that goes in their book of chemo is affected because of this. Like, look at all these people that are cancer survivors. Right. Um, it's the same thing for you. It worked the third time. Right. Even though it's not a normal, it shouldn't even have been a third procedure, but because it did, and then it worked, well, now it's back on the leaker board. This is this is the thing, this is the it thing that works. Now, obviously, I'm not actually comparing chemotherapy to Accutane, but you understand the almost sinister um reasoning and and logic that is used. And again, we're not going, we're not going conspiracy here, but like I do believe that food is thy medicine in in a lot of not all, but in a lot of instances, we're just being lazy and we're looking for like that topical or that um oral medication you can take when really it can be solved in the kitchen. So maybe we'll talk about that for just like the last 10 minutes or so. But like this is the same, same thing of looking at within, right? We're we're trying to get confidence from within. So, yes, there are topical things that you put on your skin, but can we check your diet?
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, diet is so huge and in everything. So, like, again, so water. So people don't realize, first of all, I am I do not drink enough water and I should, but like Yeah, Rachel's on a water journey. Um I need to uh you know, I we have um this scale at the office that tells you, you know, and you've gotten on it.
SPEAKER_01It's pretty amazing, actually. It's a what do you call the in body?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I had the the pleasure and the honor of getting on it um what at your um at your winter reset event. And it really is really funny. It's a s it's a scale, but it it almost like it looks like it's about to hug you. It has like these like hand arms, yeah, and you're supposed to put your hands on it, but it gives you it's not a DEXA scan. Okay, that's different, but it it was very helpful. I mean it told you, I don't know how it's magic, but it tells you pretty much your entire breakdown of how you were existing. Right. And poor Rachel. She learned she was extremely dehydrated.
SPEAKER_00I'm extremely dehydrated, like in the red.
SPEAKER_01Now, oddly enough, I thought I drank a decent amount, and I even I was ooh, I could have done a little better.
SPEAKER_00I think you were you still green though?
SPEAKER_01I was, but just barely. Um, I do recommend anyone that is interested in just getting a baseline, seeing where you are, because you don't you think one thing and the scale tells you something else. Now, if if you have um, you know, if you can't step on a scale because it's just too much, you have the person look at all the numbers for you, that whole thing. So I wouldn't I wouldn't fret too much.
SPEAKER_00But um Yeah, it tells you, you know, your muscular, it tells you um your visceral fat, it'll tell you about where your inflammation is, um uh your your overall fat, your overall health, um water, what else does it do? I know I have oh, I have the app. Yeah. And there's an app, which is really nice. There's an app, and then you can track it and see how you're doing. Um, so again, water is a huge um issue.
SPEAKER_01And sometimes just drinking water is not enough.
SPEAKER_00It's not enough, but it does play a role. So, you know, if you're siv severely dehydrated internally, you need some electrolytes. Yes. That's really um getting at. It is going to affect your skin, okay? Yes is my point. So, like if you're you're severely dehydrated. If you are underweight, okay, which I am also, um, you know, stress, stress does not do me well. Um but if you're underweight, so you're losing that fat. Your body is having to work harder to to heal, to give you the energy to do all of those things. So you're again taking away from the largest organ of your body. Yep. Um, because uh essentially your body is going to, you know, try to take care of your heart and your your kidneys and your lungs and all of those things first, and then everything goes everywhere else. So those are, you know, two huge things. Then you gotta take into effect, okay, so what are you putting into your body? You know, most of the foods that we eat nowadays, because aren't food. They're not food. But it we're we live in a go, go, go, go, go, world. And and let's be honest, like it's always the US the United States of America has always been a go, go, go world. Um other countries, um, you know, they have like rest times and it's not as you know, you're not pushed as hard or you don't feel like you need to work as hard.
SPEAKER_01And the restaurant or the eating is the event.
SPEAKER_00Is the event. And so like we also, you know, in America, we look at everything as food. Like what are we where are we gonna go eat? What should we eat? Um, and when you're on a go, go, go, we have a lot of fast food, guys. Yeah. A lot of fast food, a lot of sodium, a lot of sugar, a lot of carbs, um, you know, not as much fruits and vegetables and meats um and healthy fats. Yeah. Um, you know, beans and legumes and things like that, like those are all things that feed us. But I what I will say is sugars are horrible for your skin, regardless of whether you have acne or not. Aviations aren't great either. Um, you know, alcohol is uh it's not great. The energy drinks are just awful. Yeah. One thing that people don't realize is like while dairy is a good source of you know, protein um and fat and fat, yeah, a lot of it is still not good for many of us, and it causes a lot of people that have IBS to get spiraling and irritation.
SPEAKER_01So that's my that's my current journey. If people that follow me on social media also know um that's something that Rachel very nicely was like, hey, maybe it's the dairy. Um you know, same person that that had me do a lash a lash check um was like, I think you might have dermatitis because you have whey protein every single day. So I stopped doing that. Um so great example. And now some people can tolerate dairy and absolutely happy for you guys. That's great. Um, so I just have like some top foods. And this is this was on my Instagram. I made a little like skincare menu, supposed to look like a restaurant menu. Um, you know, take it or leave it, what I'm about to say, because I know food is now one of those topics that's polarizing, blah, blah, blah. Um, I will say this before I read this list. Um, in the news, the food pyramid was basically flipped upside down. Yeah. Um, which really happy about it. I do agree with. And I think that is beautiful word, we'll say. Um, definitely good for the skin. But just like here, here are just some hero, hero foods. Um, avocados, oysters, caviar, uh, sweet potato, uh, particularly the purple sweet potato, seaweed, coconut milk, uh, grass-fed butter, berries, um, grass-fed slash finish steak, if you can get it. If not, by the way, steak is like one of the foods that you can just live off of and eat forever because it has every single amino acid and nutrient you need. Pretty wild. Um, chicken thighs, mainly because of the fat. Um, well, I'll call it salmon, sardines, my favorite liver patch. Whoa, too low. You don't all right. I'll I'll convert you soon. Um, okay, this is gross, but it is my favor fish skin. Oh, God. If I could make potato chips out of fish skin.
unknownOh god.
SPEAKER_01You just see Rachel's face. Um, eggs, uh, yolks in particular, bone broth or any kind of like beef or chicken broth, and and shrimp, okay. There's lots of things on that list that some of you, especially the one across from me, is gagging at. But there's a lot of tasty ones on there.
SPEAKER_00So you say the egg yolk? Yeah. Um Do you know it's very high in vitamin A? I do I see that now. And you can put it on your face. It is one of those, if you guys are looking like home remedies, like if you look it up, that's gonna be on TikTok, you're gonna find it there. Yes. I did this as a teenager. Um, it does actually help. Um egg yolk, full of vacuals.
SPEAKER_01Biotin, biotin, choline, and vitamin A. Key nutrients for strong radiant skin and healthy cell turnover.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna do egg yolk facials. So with that being said, there is a kickback because sometimes eggs can also cause irritation and feed the pea bacteria. Oh, interesting. Of biotin. Oh, that's gnarly. So too much biotin for somebody who has acne can actually make it worse. Make it worse.
SPEAKER_01So there are two So do a skin assessment before trying the egg yolk facial. Um, oatmeal is a good like exfoliator and it's soothing.
SPEAKER_00I know that. Um it's better for people with psoriasis and eczema and things like that. They're just highly when we used to get chicken pox when that was okay.
SPEAKER_01Um just my opinion. Um, the oatmeal bath, do you did you take one? Did you get were you fortunate enough to get chicken pox?
SPEAKER_00Yes. I had it, my brother had it, I gave it, we gave it to my little sister.
SPEAKER_01I had it on my ninth birthday. I know. And my mom called in to like the local news station and they like announced my name on the radio when they were like, Oh, she's home with the chicken pox.
SPEAKER_02I remember that. Yeah. That uh it was a good time.
SPEAKER_01Yes, but it was gross, and I picked one. I now have like a big like crater on my face. I have like two, I have one on my arm and one on the side of my face.
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, oh, I remember doing it.
SPEAKER_01What a gross thing, chicken puxs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was younger, so we didn't pick out it. And also Calmine lotion. Oh, yes. Yeah, we were covered in that as well. I don't know about you. Whoa, whoa, we're playing music.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that was nice. Did you hear that? That was that was nice. Um, so anyway, yes. So let's check your diet. Are you eating a lot of things that are like brown?
SPEAKER_00Peanuts also can irritate a lot of peanuts or peanut are not great. Well, it's a shame.
SPEAKER_01So now don't fear food, obviously. But just I would just recommend you eat with intention and just check your cupboards and be like, do I really need another bag of Doritos today? And it has nothing to do with your weight, it has to do with your skin, okay?
SPEAKER_00Your real health and your gut health too, because it all applies to gut health. So if your gut health isn't good, then it affects everything.
SPEAKER_01Remember, we are living beings, okay? So we should not want to eat dead food. We want to eat food that is fresh, was once alive, you know, fresher the better, obviously. But um, just think of it that way. Think about you should put things in your body that it makes sense. It's all gonna live and and be harmonious. That was that word. Yes. But that's it for today. Anything else you want to add before we wrap up? I think that was that was pretty good. That was very informative, guys. I hope you took notes because you basically just went to skin school. Yeah. Um, I like that. Skin school. Skin school. That would have been the name of our other podcast. Uh, if we ever do another one, skin school. Um, all right. Well, this has been the Beauty Files. You can find us at the Beauty Files pod on Instagram. You can find me at in afternoon with Amy. And at Exquisite Med Spa for Rachel. And um, we'll see you next time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Case close.
