The boys dive into The Odyssey with their first review special. But be warned. Here be spoilers!

SPEAKER_00

Hello, movie lovers. You're listening to a very special episode of Up All Night Cinema with Wade and Adrian on KNRR, not really radio. And now, here are the boys.

SPEAKER_01

This is maybe jumping ahead a little bit, but why did Athena look like that girl they beheaded in Troy? I think you want to hear my opinion on this? Yes, let's hear an opinion because I don't have one.

SPEAKER_03

So they're constantly saying that the gods could show up as beggars or show up as whoever they want. You never know when you're entertaining a god, right? Okay. Um, and and they've they talk about that, specifically Tom Holland's character mentions it more than once throughout the movie. But my thought about that is that Odysseus was so scarred from what he saw in that moment, and just that he had to live with that. And and so Athena became his trauma that he could never escape, essentially. When he's when when she appeared to him, it was always that moment. Uh, in lieu of like cutting off the head of the statue, they cut off the head of an innocent woman, and he realizes he realizes the the magnitude of of what has happened in breaking Zeus's law. That's what I think it is. So he's he's uh continuously living with this regret or this shame by seeing Athena. Like he can't uh unsee it. And uh in theory, if the gods can appear as whoever they want or tune whoever they want, I would argue that Matt Damon is seeing Athena you know through the lens of his traumatic experiences or through his sh his guilt or shame. And until that is resolved, he probably will always see Athena that way. Hey, hey Wade.

SPEAKER_01

Hey Adrian.

SPEAKER_03

Has anybody ever told you that you have wise eyes? Athena's eyes.

SPEAKER_01

Has everyone has anyone ever told you you kind of look like Elliot Page and on the beach?

SPEAKER_03

I was hoping more for Tom Holland, but you know?

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna be honest with you with Tom Holland, man. I don't get the attraction. I mean, obviously, you know, I'm a straight dude, so yeah. I understand, you know, like I shouldn't be getting the attraction, but I don't see it.

SPEAKER_03

He's Spider-Man, you know, I think I guess he's kinda like young and corny, you know. He's he in his mannerisms and stuff like that, he's kinda nerdy, and I think that's what you know people like about him.

SPEAKER_01

I guess. I mean, he's a good Spider-Man.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Obviously, Zendaya loved him enough to marry him, so I mean, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I and good for him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I I'm just aside from Spider-Man, I don't think he's much of an actor.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, did you ever see Cherry on Apple T- Oh no, you don't have Apple TV, so you can't see it?

SPEAKER_01

I don't have it. I mean, like I said, like you talked about that once, so I saw the preview one time and I thought this looks okay. I don't know if he could do this part, but yeah, then it just disappeared into the ether that is streaming services.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

What one preview and then you never see it again.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But this is a a special episode. Last week we uh released the the ranking of our Christopher Nolan movies, and so for those of you that may be unfamiliar with us, but maybe came across the title of this episode because there's a lot of Odyssey stuff going around. We are up all night cinema. I am Adrian. Say hello, Wade. What up, English? And so the content of this episode is gonna be our essentially our first discussion, our first response to watching of the Odyssey. Now, my first question is what format did you see it in?

SPEAKER_01

I went to an IMAX.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_01

I I did see an IMAX.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Um, I saw it in Dolby, which are probably outside of the 70 millimeter IMAX as the original intended way to watch it. I would say Dolby or an IMAX screen is the next best thing, and so I I would I would like to talk about that for a second if we can. Yeah, I think I think everybody's blowing all this. It's yes, it does take away a little bit from the movie, but it doesn't take away from the movie as a whole, you know.

SPEAKER_01

See, so so here's my thing. So apparently there are only 239 theaters worldwide that could even that could even do that. Play the 70 millimeter film.

SPEAKER_03

That's correct.

SPEAKER_01

And one of them in San Antonio, Texas, broke down halfway through the first showing on Thursday night.

SPEAKER_03

And they're not easy to fix.

SPEAKER_01

No, they had to cancel every screening up until Thursday.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

And then one other theater, I don't know, I couldn't ascertain what state it was in, but there was one other theater where they also said that the machine was running hot, so they canceled their showings for a week, also.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and so, you know, uh the CEO of IMAX, I forget his name, but he put out like a statement because of the increased demand for movie theaters to be able to show 70 millimeter, and he's just saying, like, look, this is not new technology, like they don't make it anymore. They have they have to go and source these 70 millimeter projectors and essentially refurbish them and then set the theater to be able to play them because it requires a lot of renovation to do so. That's expensive as fuck. Yeah, I mean, because essentially you gotta change seating positions, you gotta change the screen. I mean, you know, it's a whole gambit of things. Now, I'll be interested to see if it happens because there's a lot more movies coming out in this type of it feels like it's making a comeback for some reason, or it's been taught for some reason I feel like it's been talked about a lot in the last two or three years.

SPEAKER_01

It's been talked about a lot in the last two or three years, but I don't see them doing it. I I I just don't see it because how much how much did this movie cost, and how much of that was 70 millimeter film stock?

SPEAKER_03

Don't know. It costs them about 250 million, and they made that back opening weekend already.

SPEAKER_01

But they also said the movie needs to make like 700 and something to break even with marketing costs and stuff. Wow. So when you really break that down, who the fuck is gonna spend the money on that? Yeah, I don't I don't know. I I don't think anyone is, and you know, I know like there's a large you know, all the film bros online are like, this is the way it's meant to be seen. Like I sent you that video where they were like zombies. Yeah, you know, I'm seeing on 70 millimeter, as Nolan intended. And it's just like, but then he's over here saying that it's okay to watch it on an iPad. So what's the point? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Now I've seen multiple movies in 70 millimeter, one of them being with you when we went and saw Oppenheimer. Yes. At the Regal, and that's also where I saw Project Hail Mary in 70 millimeter. I've also seen Sinners in 70 millimeter. And it is another type of experience, don't get me wrong. Oh no, yeah, absolutely. It does change the experience, and it's absolutely the the way to watch it, but I don't think it's the only way to watch it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it can't be the only way to watch it, and here's why. What I what I mean by that though is No, no, I know what you I know what you mean. Like that, but you know, in 30 years, yes, when this movie is only available digitally, digitally, because by then I seriously doubt we'll have any physical media except what we still own.

SPEAKER_03

Correct. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, you're you're gonna have you're gonna see the standard version. And if the movie doesn't work in the standard version, then no one's gonna watch it. And it's uh ideal, like really that's a kind of a shit movie if it doesn't work outside of 70 millimeter.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and and I don't think that's no Nolan's in intention ever to create a movie where you can only see it that way. I I just think yeah, I mean, I mean, they they created new cameras to film this movie, you know, 70 millimeter IMAX cameras to film this movie. And so, you know, I I I uh I appreciate Nolan kind of always pushing the envelope, or he's one of those guys who uh continually is trying to add uh artistically in some way or another to cinema. Um, you know, and and and I think I think he also appreciates and understands the ability to watch the movie, and so I would never think that any version, no matter how you watch it, would ever ultimately take too much away from the film itself, you know? So how about we get to the movie?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, let's talk about the movie that that we didn't see in 70 millimeter. As Nolan intended.

SPEAKER_03

As Nolan intended. So, um the movie itself. I watched it yesterday, and so did you. And and I'm gonna give my nutshell, you can give your nutshell, and then we could tear back the the layers of the onion. Does that sound good?

SPEAKER_01

Sounds good, but I do have to say before we do that, not everyone likes onions.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Well, maybe they could be the onions from Outback fried, and they're like a you know, like a like a like a flower.

SPEAKER_01

How about like a parfait? Everybody likes a parfait.

SPEAKER_03

As long as it's a McDonald's parfait.

SPEAKER_01

Do they still make those?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I haven't been to McDonald's for so many years. I just remember the parfaits and yeah, yeah, there was only four blueberries in there. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, it wasn't, it was a bunch of blueberries and like four strawberries. Yeah. Maybe five strawberries.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But when the movie was over, as I was walking out, I kind of was like, that was a good movie, but I don't know if it was a great movie. Hmm. And then as I started thinking about the different scenes and everything that happened in that movie and some of the sequences, I have slowly changed my thought process and my beliefs of it that I I think it's a great movie. Um, and and we could get into that and and why I think that. But I'm curious to know now, and I want to see it again to further define my my point of view because I don't think it's solidified yet. I think I need to see it at least one more time to have like a good, okay. Yeah, this is what I I actually think about it. Um, because there were there were moments where I feel like it was a little slow and drawn out, but there was other moments where it's like, holy shit, like what is this movie doing to me right now? You know? Um I I I think it's a great movie, and I'm curious to know your thoughts.

SPEAKER_01

Uh my first thought is it was not the movie of the century.

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_01

That was one that uh you had said that they're pushing this as the movie of the century. Like, remember that really stuck with me when you said that at the time.

SPEAKER_03

Well, the the trailer and stuff, the official trailer, like it it really did feel that way. Like it's this, it's the epic, uh, the biggest epic of epics ever told type of thing, you know?

SPEAKER_01

And I will say this also, it was much better than the previews.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it was much better than the previews.

SPEAKER_01

As I expected, those trailers were trash. Yeah, like I'm sorry, like they did this movie no favors. No, not at all. Based off the opening weekend grosses, it doesn't seem to have mattered, like throwing Nolan's name on there just guarantees box office now. But yeah, ultimately, I really liked it too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So let's give or let's let's briefly go through because you know, we've done some some talk already about the cast and things like that. So let's let's briefly discuss what you thought about their performances, and then we can get into like the specific scenes and stuff like that. Let's start with Matt Damon as a piece of Matt Damon.

SPEAKER_01

Finally returned home, Matt Damon. Finally returned home. Did did you did you see the uh the meme I sent you like an hour ago? About at the World Cup? Uh that one? No.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I maybe it maybe it wasn't that one. I got one from somebody else today because Matt Damon was at the World Cup game in New York. Oh, yeah. No, his wife, he was like, Oh, I saw two different ones. One said, Oh, no wonder it took Matt Damon so so long to get home. He was at the World Cup today. Yeah, and then the other one is like, look at that. Odysseus is finally returned home with his wife to watch the World Cup.

SPEAKER_01

No, the the the one I sent you was um it was uh Charlize Theron saying, Tell me what you remember. And he says, I had a wife, I had a son, there was a zoo, we bought a zoo. I'll tell you what.

SPEAKER_03

I tell you what.

SPEAKER_01

Um, yes and no. I don't know. I I don't know if we should be starting with the cast. Like, let's just run through and what we thought of the cast because I feel like we're gonna get into specific parts of the movie.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, well let's just let's just let's just go through the movie then, and when we touch on on them, we touch on Yeah, just because I already want to talk about Charlie Sterin's part in the movie doing it this way.

SPEAKER_01

So so my first problem with the movie was the first two to five minutes of the movie with Travis Scott.

SPEAKER_03

Is that who was uh the guy banging the Yeah, so yeah, that guy was Travis Scott, the rapper. But um the that first sequence was difficult for me too because I felt like the audio wasn't quite hearable between the conversations of the individuals. Um I felt like it was it was maybe mixed poorly, but we know that's normal for Nolan sometimes, especially Yeah and the rest of the movie I didn't feel like that was a problem. Not at all, not at all. And but maybe he wanted to give off the the vibe if as if we were really there in the room with all the ruckus that was going on, possibly. I think that was what they were going for. But the whole hitting the the table, that's almost like almost like a scribe telling the story of Odysseus because they're in Odysseus' home. So I understood that, and I didn't have to necessarily too much of a problem with that.

SPEAKER_01

Um it was like the the first five minutes, you know, you got that, and then he was like, you know, they're showing shots of Matt Damon on the beach and a couple other things, and yeah, and they had a couple scenes, so I I never really felt like and also part of the problem might be I saw this in a full theater and some asshole came in late and he couldn't find his seat, so for that first two to three minutes he was kind of just leaning against the banister right there, waiting for it to get bright enough to find his seat. Yeah. So that might have been distracting as well.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But it just felt like it took me a few minutes to get into it to like really settle in.

SPEAKER_03

No, I I I think it it felt that way for me too. Um, because you don't really, and I'm I'm I'm not surprised, you know, you don't really know what they're doing with the movie quite yet in those first few minutes. You just, you know, you're getting snippets from different time periods and things like that, and um it it was difficult the first few minutes, but after that I felt like it three hours went by really fast.

SPEAKER_01

I felt honestly, yes. It felt like it went by really fast for me too.

SPEAKER_03

Um I felt like the pacing was good in the movie, in the sense of like they give you some meat and potatoes in some of the sequences, and then then they kind of quiet it down and go back to like more uh more intense like scenes where where characters are are doing more talking and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because I I felt like I can't tell you exactly what happened in the first 10 to 15 minutes. Like I remember Travis Scott banging on the table and the cross-cutting of scenes, and then very quickly we get um Tom Holland dealing with the suitors, yep. And you know, that all was kind of interesting, but I really didn't get into the movie until we got to Matt Damon on the beach. Yes, and so that's about 15 minutes a movie. Um at one point they do show uh you know the scene with Elliot Page getting murdered by the horse.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And that was really cool, and that might have been actually the first scene in the movie where I really kind of locked in a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because you see Elliot Page there and running towards the horse and standing up, and then out of nowhere he gets fucking daggered, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like two or three times, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I really felt like that should have been the start of the movie. You know, like that should have been the first shot of the movie.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I would not have been upset with that. Um, but I understood why he started it the way they did with the suitors and the beggars and the you know being inside the house without the king, that sort of stuff. But I mean, because that's that's that's ultimately where the the movie is gonna finish. So I I understand that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it it was just like, I don't know, like once again, I do I also I also need to see it again before I can really kind of lock down my feelings on it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because there's so much to that, like talking about it, you it still feels a little displaced when you're thinking about the film because you're trying to recollect something you've only seen once and and you only have that initial experience watching it, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, and normally I don't have a difficult problem doing that, especially only like we saw this yesterday. But you know, after I walked out of the theater, I would say that a large portion of everything that happened in that first 10 to 15 minutes is just was gone 10 to 15 minutes into the movie. Yeah. So yeah, it it it took me a few minutes to lock into the movie, yeah. Really feel like I was watching a movie.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we have uh you know major sequences that we can discuss. Um we can discuss um the Trojan horse building and invasion of Troy. We can discuss the Cyclops.

SPEAKER_01

The Cyclops came first, right? Yes. So really for me, the movie really starts with Matt Damon and Calypso and him eating the lotus flower and remembering bits and pieces, and her finally realizing that he's well enough to remember this. And then that's when we get, you know, the them leaving Troy, the war is over, and then we get the Cyclops.

SPEAKER_03

Now, I get why everybody after this film wants Nolan to make a horror or scary movie because there are some creepy sequences in this film, and I really, really liked them. One being obviously the Cyclops scene, the scene with Xerces, and the scene with uh when he goes, you know, to visit the undead. All three of those scenes were really dark, really creepy, and really awesome, I thought.

SPEAKER_01

I I liked that they took the time with the Cyclops.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. It wasn't just rushed through.

SPEAKER_01

No, how many days were they in there? Three? Uh yes, if I recall that seemed like three days. Seemed like three days. And that scene was great, and then them ch him chasing them out to the water was great.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, it's Poseidon. In Sun, what do you expect? Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But you know, there was I didn't feel like I don't believe that all of that was practical.

SPEAKER_03

Well, uh, I forget the actor's name, but in the sequences where they did the up close of the Cyclops, um, it's actually a a a guy in full makeup doing the sequences.

SPEAKER_01

Well, no, that's fine, but you know, he's computer generated into the scene somewhere. Like he wasn't there. Like, obviously, like for parts of that, he couldn't have been. Oh, yes, I get that.

SPEAKER_03

Like, in terms of but they also they also built a huge animatronic cyclops.

SPEAKER_04

Hmm.

SPEAKER_03

So, like in scenes where they're probably trying to run out and all you see is the feet of the cyclops or something, they're probably using they're probably using the animatronic there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but you know, when he's in the water and he's like reaching for him and he grabs those two and it's like that's not real. It can't be. No, it can't be parts of it, parts of it are, but yeah, you know, and no that's splitting hairs, because obviously you can't do that for real, but that's been kind of like the big lead up is everything in this movie is practical. And I'm like, not everything. But no, the Cyclops was really fucking cool.

SPEAKER_03

That scream, dude, was horrifying. Oh, yeah. And and it lasted so much longer than it needed to, but that was so good that it did because it just echoed. It just echoed in the theater for so long.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. No, I I really liked it. Um, since we're already here, I will mention uh probably my favorite member of the cast who we didn't know was even in the fucking movie was uh Hamish Patel.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, he was great.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I was just like, why did I not know this guy was in the movie? He's probably like the fourth or fifth most prominent character in the movie.

SPEAKER_03

Like if we're really honest. Yeah, he was in in every major sequence that Matt Damon was in, um, you know, whether on the water or on the ground, he was in it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I'm like, why was he nowhere on any of the trailers? Made no sense to me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, I think a lot of guys for that matter didn't, you know, we got a little bit of John Bernthal, but I thought he was excellent as Agamemnon's uh brother.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but let's not skip well, we'll get to him. Yeah, but yeah, Hamish Patel was great, and I'm just like, why was he nowhere in any of the previews? Yeah, but that's the stuff I'm talking about. Like some of that should have been on the previews, like the the paranoia, yeah, and the near mutiny of his men should have been there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, oh yeah. I mean, there was a few guys that I was really happy to see. The the other second in command, uh, forget his name, he was really good too. Um the gentleman that that jumps off into the sea.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, with when he takes the wax out of his ears and hears the siren. Yeah, with the surrender, like that was I can't remember his name either, but he's always really good too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he did a great job. I think it it really was uh well casted. And uh can we just can can we just say something? Who who who does the best job in that movie for you? Let's just get this one out of the way. Who does the best job? Okay. In terms of playing their role, or who's your favorite your favorite?

SPEAKER_01

Like I said, I think Hamish Patel was probably up there, especially because of screen time. I thought I was actually really impressed with Anne Hathaway a couple of times.

SPEAKER_03

That final sequence when Odysseus returns. I mean, she's she's freaking great. And that might that sequence might earn her uh an Oscar nod, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Um you know what why we're here? Let's just say it. Who who do we think is actually gonna get Oscar Noms for this movie? Matt Damon. Maybe Tom Holland? No. You don't think so? No, absolutely not. Robert Pattinson, maybe. He was he was good. He was really good.

SPEAKER_03

I think the guy, to me, that's that I would love to see one is John Leguizamo.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, but I don't know if he would. I think honestly, if we really look at it, like, yeah, they'll probably give Matt Damon one. I don't know if he necessarily deserves one. He was great. Don't get me wrong, he was really good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But I feel like Anne Hathaway should get one. Yep. I feel like Robert Pattinson should get one. And I feel like Samantha Morton will get one. Okay. And she'll probably win.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Samantha Morton was crazy, as Cersei.

SPEAKER_01

That sequence was so awesome.

SPEAKER_03

It was so creepy, dude.

SPEAKER_01

It was very creepy. The way she was like molding everyone's faces like clay.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, that was so cool.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, I I thought, I mean, I I didn't even think that was the creepiest part. The creepiest part to me was just the non-stop eating and that insatiability that was like not being quenched, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, like how she's telling them I've fucked you, I fucked you hard, and they can't stop eating.

SPEAKER_03

It was just so sickening to keep watching because you could tell like Nolan wanted that scene to go on a little extra longer in bits and pieces, because like they he allowed them to keep focusing on them eating, and it was just uncomfortable, you know, to keep watching. And I think that that sequence achieved exactly what it was supposed to do to for the audience.

SPEAKER_01

It was great. Did have you ever this is slightly off topic, but have you read the book Cersei? Uh no. I I I can't remember the author's name, which is kind of obnoxious to me. But she she wrote two novels. One is on Cersei, it's her whole story. And that sequence in the Odyssey where um her and Odysseus have a bit of a love affair, and it's a fantastic, fantastic book. And she also has a book called Song of Achilles, which is really good too, which is about the relationship between Achilles and his um uh I I forget what they call him or even what his name is. The the guy who dresses up like him and gets himself killed at the gates, yeah, and finally gets Achilles to go to war with Troy. I forget his name, but it's like this whole romantic relationship with them. Fantastic books.

SPEAKER_03

Hmm. Interesting. I didn't yeah, I didn't know there that there was even books.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they're they're great. They're they're amazing. If you like Greek mythology, I would highly recommend reading those. But because of that book, I was probably most excited for the Circe scene, which I felt like she wasn't in the movie as long as I would have liked.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Um but they couldn't take up too much time there because I feel like they took up quite a bit of time with that sequence. Um it was great.

SPEAKER_01

It went by so fast, it felt like, but it also didn't feel rushed. No. Like it didn't feel like they were rushing, but it was great. I really liked it. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. And then after that, what came next?

SPEAKER_03

Uh we had the the sequence with um it would have had to have been because from there uh Cersei tells him that she he he needs to go to the far to the beach, right? Of the undead or Hades, right? Essentially. Yeah. So he goes to Hades, yeah. That's right. He goes, they they make the sacrifices, um, and then they all pop up out of the ground, which to my understanding, they actually buried people alive with oxygen support to in order to make that scene happen. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

But but before that, before that, you get Tom Holland going to traveling yeah to Menelaus to see if he knows what happened to Odysseus.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, that's correct. The sequence with Burnthal. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. He was wild.

SPEAKER_03

He was very good.

SPEAKER_01

He was very good. Lupita Niango was very good also.

SPEAKER_03

She was very good. Everybody was bitching about, you know, casting a black woman as Helen of Troy. Um, and you know I didn't have a problem with it. Me neither. Wild to see her face cut up, but like that was like a testament to like, hey, look, we captured, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, well, it was a punishment.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, correct.

SPEAKER_01

You know, sh she left him in the first place and ran off to Troy.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

And so he's got her back, and now he's making sure everyone knows and possibly making sure that nobody would ever want her again.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It was uh it was a it was a really good performance by the both of them.

SPEAKER_03

I thought Tom Holland was great in that sequence too, man.

SPEAKER_01

He was great in that sequence.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, just like sitting at the table and them knowing that he's the son and he's just like tears, you know, coming down his face. Like I thought I thought it was brilliant. He was really good in it, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. Like, I just I guess maybe I just don't like him that I don't like that's not fair. Like, it's not that I don't like him. Watch it again.

SPEAKER_03

Watch it again one day, yeah. Watch it, watch it again, and then let me know what you think of his performance. Because I think his performance is much better than he's gonna get credit for. Yeah, probably true. Yeah. He's a he's a pretty, I mean, he's a strong, like he has a lot of screen time.

SPEAKER_01

If you think about it, oh no, he does. He absolutely does. He was I think he was like the second build actor in the movie, and rightfully so.

SPEAKER_03

So uh I think for that reason, I think he will get a supporting nod, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_01

I I honestly don't think so. I think Robert Pattinson's gonna steal his thunder. I wouldn't be surprised if both of them get it. No, I don't think that, especially because it's coming out in July. I don't know. Now, this is the first year, also, this is the first year in Oscar history where somebody could be nominated more than once in the same category.

SPEAKER_04

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Do we think Pattinson's gonna get nominated twice? I think he's sporting actor.

SPEAKER_03

I think he's gonna get nominated for best actor in primetime. Uh when does prime time come out? I want to say later this year, but but I don't know if anybody's gonna take that one from uh from Tom Cruise.

SPEAKER_01

That movie looks kind of wild too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So they they played a trailer for that during uh yeah, during the Odyssey, and I don't think my audience had any idea how to respond to that trailer. Like they were just all kind of like, what the fuck was that?

SPEAKER_03

Fall of 2026 Primetime is supposed to come out, which is the A24 crime psychological thriller that follows uh Chris Hansen from Primetime as he tracks the or the origins of the To Catch a Predator, right? To catch a predator, correct.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll see. That makes more sense because someone told me he was gonna get nominated three times, and I'm like, the drama came out. Drama was yeah, it came out way too long ago. Like by yeah, it came out in April, by the time the Oscar nominations come out, I was like, no one's getting nominated for that movie.

SPEAKER_03

And he's and he's also gonna be the villain in Dune 3.

SPEAKER_01

So that's what I was referring to, because Dune 3, I think, is gonna be the movie of the year.

SPEAKER_03

I think so too. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Even watching it, the trailer in the IMAX theater, I was like, holy shit. Yes, yeah. But back to the Odyssey.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Um the scene where he meets the undead. I thought that was really creepy with the drinking of the blood and almost like they were choke choking on the blood, but talking because that's the only way they could speak. And then they show the scene with, you know, he's like, My lord, like what are you doing here? Because Agamegmon shows up, you know, and then they go through his sequence of betrayal when he gets home. Yeah. And that's why he goes home as a beggar and not as a king.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It makes it made sense, yeah. Now, now that we mentioned that, um, by this point, yeah, we did skip it. Because my one of my favorite scenes in the movie was when Burndhal is telling Tom Holland about the Trojan horse, and then like that whole sequence where they're like trying to get the gates open.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

The best shot of that whole movie was when they get the gates open and the gates open and Agamemnon's just standing.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I was like, man, that was that should have been the preview.

SPEAKER_03

Uh it was in the prologue of the before Project Hell Mary and 70mm. That's the scene they show you. Uh because man, I love the ticking time clock. The sorry, I love the ticking time clock as the score behind the sequence of the movie there. It's just like catch that, but that makes sense. That's why there's so much anxiety in that in that section of the movie, because the the time clock clock in the background keeps like speeding up in theory until they get that door open. Um yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That was just that was just so that was just such an amazing shot when those gates open, he's just standing there. That whole sequence was amazing. You know, yeah, it really was. It really was. But um I did, I did that. Was like the there was also the one part in that scene where you know they're in the Trojan horse and they're waiting for it to get quiet and everyone to go to sleep so they could sneak out of it. And then they kick the belly of the horse off and it makes no noise. And I'm like, fuck off. Yeah, yeah. It made no noise. That thing is metal.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, it's wood, probably.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, I'm I'm sure in real life it was wood. It looks metal in this movie, though.

SPEAKER_03

Uh well, yes, and yeah, it it did, but they took it for from scrap, you know, from the boat. That's how they made it.

SPEAKER_01

I get it, but that's another problem with the movie, is like um, you know, we've seen that on the internet where they show the picture of the Trojan horse from the movie Troy, and it looks like wood, and this movie looks like polished steel.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But either way, even if it was wood, it still would have made noise falling off. That thing would have been fucking heavy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it was like ten feet away.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I thought it was uh really interesting how they chose to like drag it into the town. And you know, and that's a whole oh yeah, that's a real strong uh premise or uh reason for Matt Damon's Odysseus' character's grief and sorrow is because he's no he knows he's violated Zeus's law, right? By yeah, uh by by breaking that piece and disguising it as a way for them to get into the city.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um and that's really like the underlying premise of the movie, is that you know, for so long Odysseus was somebody who valued honor and respect and would obey Zeus's laws, and uh and that's why all the suitors and the beggars are eating in his castle for many years, right? Um but he he seems to lose sight of that on his journey home because he he's as punishment, really, if you think about it. Um and but also like think about this too. Like, if he didn't mess up the Cyclops, then his journey probably would have been a lot easier because Poseidon was pissed at him.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe, yeah. But that's that's what I like about the movie too, is they talk about like the gods.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. They do.

SPEAKER_01

Because, you know, I've seen other movies like if I remember correctly, Troy didn't mention the gods at all. I mean, it's been a while since I saw Troy. I'm really looking forward to the arrow box set in September.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's gonna be cool.

SPEAKER_01

That's gonna be really cool. But, you know, they were very they talked a lot about them. They talked a lot about them, they were very aware of who the gods were, what they thought the gods wanted.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But then at the same time, this is maybe jumping ahead a little bit, but why did Athena look like that girl they beheaded in Troy? I think you want to hear my opinion on this? Yes, let's hear an opinion because I don't have one.

SPEAKER_03

So they're constantly saying that the gods could show up as beggars or show up as whoever they want. You never know when you're entertaining a god, right? Okay. Um, and and they've they talk about that, specifically Tom Holland's character mentions it more than once throughout the movie. But my thought about that is that Odysseus was so scarred from what he saw in that moment, and just that he had to live with that. And and so Athena became his trauma that he could never escape, essentially, when he's when when she appeared to him, it was always that moment. Uh in lieu of like cutting off the head of the statue, they cut off the head of an innocent woman, and he realizes he realizes the the magnitude of of what has happened in breaking Zeus's law. That's what I think it is. So he's he's uh continuously living with this regret or this shame by seeing Athena. Like he can't uh unsee it. And uh in theory, if the gods can appear as whoever they want or to whoever they want, I I would argue that Matt Damon is seeing Athena, you know, through the lens of his traumatic experiences or through his his guilt or shame. And until that is resolved, he probably will always see Athena that way. That's what I because I was thinking about that a lot because I I that reveal was I think really intense.

SPEAKER_01

I just remember thinking, so is he really seeing Athena or does he just think he's seeing Athena?

SPEAKER_03

It's up to the it's up to the viewer, I guess.

SPEAKER_01

But once again, we skipped over a couple things now thinking about it. Uh, there was that great scene where Robert Pattinson's character, one of the suitors, you know, goes to see Anne Hathaway. Yeah. Because he's aware that she's not only moving really slowly making the uh burial shroud for Odysseus, but she's unraveling it as she's going as well. Which also brings me to Mia Goth, who was fantastic in the movie. She she didn't have a lot.

SPEAKER_03

No, but when she did, it was important.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she was she was really good. And um the whole storyline with Robert Pattinson's character, how he keeps telling people how he begged Odysseus to go to Troy with him, and uh Odysseus wouldn't take him, and then when they show when they do the lottery and he picks the the long straw and he makes the poor kid go. The poor kid is Elliot Page's character, yes, and that whole business. And so when um Elliot Page gives him the the lot back and tells him give give this to Robert Pattinson return his shame because he was he was too he wasn't man enough to go to Troy, so he made a a beggar do it, and then he didn't even keep his promise and take care of uh Elliot Page's father. Yeah, you know, that whole business was great.

SPEAKER_03

They had the the terrible storm on the sea with the whirlpool. Oh, that was really cool and the monster and the that crazy ass monster, and then they had the Serenz that came either right before that or after that, because they were still on the sea. Oh, sirens yeah, Seren, Sirens, yeah, Serenas in Spanish, but yeah, the sirens, yeah. I really loved that sequence on the boat. It was great. We because we don't know what it sounds like. We weren't privy because he muffled the audience's ears as well with the earwax. I thought that was brilliant too. It kind of like adds to the fable story of like Odysseus is joking, well, I'm gonna be the only one that ever hears it, you know? And yet and then and then you see the the torment or that whole monologue for Matt Damon was incredible.

SPEAKER_01

Is is that the same monologue where he finally tells everybody that you all die? No, because that was a great monologue.

SPEAKER_03

He tells them that after they avoid the whirlpool and then just get snatched up by that crazy ass monster out of the rocks.

SPEAKER_01

Because Hammond Spattel's like, you knew this was gonna happen. He's like, Yes, we you either all died in the whirlpool or six died to the monster. Correct. But if I told you, you would have not gone to the monster, you would have tried to beat the whirlpool, correct? Yeah, yeah, but yeah, all all that stuff was great, and then uh When he finally tells them you're all gonna die. Yeah, he tells them that on the boat that they're all gonna die. And he warns them to the three. That's right. They saw the island. Correct. He's like, You're all gonna die on the island if we go.

SPEAKER_03

Well, because you're gonna eat the meat. So promise me you're not gonna eat eat the meat of the sun god, the cattle of the sun god.

SPEAKER_01

And then when um he catches them eating it and they apologize, he's like, Don't apologize to me. I wanted you guys to live. I was like, fuck.

SPEAKER_03

And that's where you know the ship separates. Uh we never see the the crew again because at that point they die. They they die at sea. Poseidon takes them, and that's how he ends up with Calypso, right? Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Um she nurses him back to health, and yeah, and I love that whole framing device of her asking him to remember what he can, and he remembers a little bit each time she does it. Yeah, and that's how the story is being told. I really did appreciate that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I did too. Um, I thought uh Charlise was really good as Calypso. She was. Yeah. Um, she was subtle, right? And never really in your face at all ever. And they alluded to obviously he was there for seven years, but they alluded obviously to their life they had built, and you know, there was there was no shown romance, but obviously it's implied that in seven years things happened. Correct, yeah. And that was all d due to the lotus flower that clouds the judgment. And I thought that whole sequence of him remembering and then coming to terms once he sees the the uh Athena. Yeah, the little uh pin, the pin, and it hits him like a wave, you know? Mm-hmm. And then he's like, I'm ready to go back home, you know?

SPEAKER_01

And then around that time we get the scene that really impressed me with Ann Hathaway. Well, not really, no, there's it's a little bit later because like wait, like we said, he goes back to well, he doesn't go straight to Ithaca. No, he does go straight to Ithaca, and that's where he finds out that yeah, because Tom Holland's gonna be ambushed at the temple.

SPEAKER_03

Correct, because Calypso tells him that he she he needs to surrender himself to the sea and Poseidon and allow what Poseidon's gonna do, but that Zeus is not gonna allow Poseidon to kill him. Yeah. Right. And then so he he falls over the water, and you think he's gonna drown, or he's just he's just letting go. He's letting exactly what Calypso said, and then next thing you know, he winds up on on the shore of Ithaca when he comes to and realizes that's where he's at because Athena's sitting right next to him and telling him, Don't you recognize your own home?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And then he goes to Leghuizamo and he finds out the Legwizamo's been robbed. And how about that scene when he throws the the puppy off the ledge? Oh man, I was so glad Jen wasn't there. Oh man, Jen would have holy shit flipped, dude. She would have. Like, I knew that that whole sequence with the dog was gonna be sad as it was, and it was it was great to they did the the whole business with the dog, but man, like when he just like oh nope, never mind, and he threw it. I was like, oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

We can't forget either about specifically the dog because there's that the opening sequence that's really important within those first 15 minutes. There's something really important that happens when the boar attacks the the boar attacks him because you see the handmaiden in the in the castle recognize the scar on his leg when she goes to wash his feet. Yeah, the same lady that sutured him up after the boar incident.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so like 20 years before, yeah. Yeah, that that was a that was a really good scene.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but yeah, this the scene I was referring to with Anne Hathaway was when after, you know, Tom Holland meets Odysseus, and I don't think I can't remember now if he knows Odysseus as Odysseus yet.

SPEAKER_03

He doesn't know he is. He meets him. The first time he meets him is when when he goes to what is it, Peloth or Pythos? Um to meet with to the temple. That's where he gets where because yeah, I don't I didn't quite make out what he what he said to him, but he says, that beggar said something, bring him to me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he said that he had a message from John Linguizamo. Yeah, and so that's what brings him into the room, and that's how he's able to save Tom Holland from being murdered, and then you know, we're gonna go rescue your kingdom. Odessius lives and all that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and then I believe he he takes on the name of Elliot Page's character.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, on, but then Tom Holland goes to Anne Hathaway and he tells her, you know, this is the plan, this is how I'm gonna get the the throne so that we could continue, and she's like, So I'm just supposed to marry one of these assholes and leave, and leave so you could have the throne, and he's like, We can't leave it like this. The throne has been empty for 20 years. She's like, I've been sitting on it the whole time. Yeah, she was incredible in that sequence.

SPEAKER_03

So much emotion. Yeah, that was that was really good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that was the scene for me where I was like, Holy shit, she's killing it in this movie.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because the preview just made it look like she was just gonna sit there and weave and and pine for her husband the whole time.

SPEAKER_03

No, I loved that sequence, and then I loved the sequence when uh even though you don't really see her, the conversations between her and Matt Damon. Yeah. You know, after after the incident where Matt Damon gets pummeled by Robert Pattinson's character, right? Yes. And he hands him the the little the little elongated piece, the lot, yeah. Um, I think all that was really good. The sequence where she I mean, the whole we're what we're leading up to is eventually, you know, the the ending sequence, which is about 45 minutes long, and it's fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

It it didn't feel 45 minutes long at all. Yeah. Um, when she finally is like, okay, whoever can string Odysseus's bow and shoot the arrow through the axes.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And of course nobody could string the bow and they're all laughing about it.

SPEAKER_03

But I think she once she knows, because it's Matt Damon's character there that tells her that Odysseus is alive. Yeah. In that conversation. And I think at that point, does she have a hunch that that's him or not?

SPEAKER_01

You know, I think she kind of knows, like she kind of suspects at least.

SPEAKER_03

And that's why she chooses that as the the test, you know, because she knows only one man can do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But also, he tells her that Odysseus will be here when you need him most. Yeah. Right.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. My uh one of my co-workers, we were talking about it today, and it didn't occur to me how fucking cool that was. But when, you know, he takes a long time trying to string the bow, and everyone's like, okay, okay, you had your turn. And then he just fucking bends it over and bends it and does it really quick, like it's nothing, and everyone just kind of shuts up. But then yeah, he like he flicks the bow like he does for the hunting animals.

SPEAKER_03

And but that's the warning to all those people in there in there that you're all about to get fucking hunted and murdered.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But yeah, but my my co-worker at work, he's all like, yeah, like that that lead up to when he strings the bow and he flicks it and it it sings along with the musical score.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He's like, he's he was like, that was incredible. Thinking about it, yeah, that was really fucking cool.

SPEAKER_03

And you know, uh, Ludwig, you know, the composer for the film, Christopher Nolan did not want him using traditional instruments. So they composed that entire score with like ancient musical items that you would have found in civilizations ago, to my understanding, you know, because there's really the score's beautifully like subtle, I think, through the whole movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it didn't um necessarily like overstate itself. No, like it just blended in with the movie just right. So I I didn't notice the score.

SPEAKER_03

Obviously, the ones that stood out to me the most were the siren song with that flute or whatever it was. That was just subtly just kind of beautiful, but also it felt like very depressing and just sad, but uh, I think it was really well done. Very subtle, but always was there at the right times where the movie needed it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it it was good. I will say probably my least favorite part of the movie was the end credits. Oh, with uh Travis Scott song. Was that Travis Scott? I was just like sitting there going, I don't know if this fits with the rest of this movie. But you know, I kind of cringed a bit.

SPEAKER_03

I was like, oh, this doesn't maybe it was maybe that was you know uh the half of getting Gen Z to come watch the movie.

SPEAKER_01

I I don't think they needed a reason to be honest. No, um but I I was just like what is this song? Yeah, I was the song.

SPEAKER_03

That whole ending sequence with the the test in the fight is just incredible. Incredible.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. I don't know. I I definitely see Pattinson getting the Oscar nomination for it.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, that sequence was fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

He was just great where he's you know, where the beggar gives him back the lot.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, it's not mine and all that.

SPEAKER_03

And he was good when he was creepy and just an asshole, but he was also fantastic when he was a coward and scared for his freaking life.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, like how he's hiding behind the columns and telling everybody else to get the weapons and yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well, his right hand man, which um I I didn't recognize him at first, but my brother-in-law did. He played Dr. Dre and straight out of Compton. The uh forget his name, but um, you know, as soon as you s you you hear him pluck the bow and he shoots the arrow through the axes, and then it immediately looks at Anne Hathaway, but then it goes to the it goes to Corey Hawkins character. Okay. He that and then he gets just shot right in the jugular with an arrow.

SPEAKER_01

You're like, oh dang. Yeah, that that sequence was really good. I liked when um Anne Hathaway runs up the stairs to hide why this is going on, and Mia Goth tries to go in, and she's like, Surely your place is here. Yeah, and closing it on her, yeah, closes it on her because earlier, you know, she tried to run to go see Tom Holland, and she's like, Surely your place is there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, trying to, you know, distract her from you know all the business, but that also kind of outs her as an even bigger problem than she was aware of and as I was aware of before. I don't know. So where where do you think you've only seen it the one time? Where do you think you would put it on your Nolan rankings right now?

SPEAKER_03

That's a tough one. My top five were just to go through them again Interstellar, the Dark Knight, Memento, the Prestige, and Inception.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. Um let's see if I can remember my top five offhand. My top five were Inception, Memento, the Prestige, the Dark Knight, and Insomnia.

SPEAKER_03

That's correct.

SPEAKER_01

Now I would put it, my number six was Batman Begins, and my number seven was Interstellar. And I think I would firmly put the Odyssey somewhere between six and eight.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Right now, anyway, after one viewing. Like it was a great movie. I would say it was uh one that I really enjoy. I don't know if as at least as of right now, it's not one of my favorites of his.

SPEAKER_03

I I think the more I think about it, I I like it more and more as I'm thinking about the sequences and just how he how they laid out the movie and uh just the subliminal stuff that's there throughout in in certain pieces and and what it makes you think about. I'd like to see it again because I think there's some emotional sequences that you just don't quite remember with only watching once. Like the monologue with the sirens is incredibly deep, I think, and I feel like that was a very a very emotional sequence, along with like you said, yeah, there there was many others. There there was a lot happening in that movie. You know what sequence we forgot to talk about? Huh. Where they all get decimated by the giants.

SPEAKER_01

You know what? We did forget to mention the giants. Like that scene was actually really cool too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because it was almost like were the giants even real, or was it like a figment of their imagination because like the forest was you know fucking closing in on them and oh, it was like the trees were like sliding around.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But you know, then when they get to the water and the giants are pulling the ships apart with their bare hands.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

That's where really that sequence is where really the is the start of Odysseus losing his crew because they he they lose almost they they lose two-thirds of their their men on that island. Yeah, and so I think the uh internal potential for mutiny starts there, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And like I said, all of that was fantastic, you know, when um Hamish Patel tells him we want you to stay at the boat, and he's like, Is this a mutiny? He's like, That's up to you. Yeah, that sounds that's on Xerxes Island. Yeah, I was like, wow. But I liked that and I like that he recognized the problem and he chose to stay behind.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I think there's definitely some creative liberty in the movie because uh I recall certain things of the of the book that made Odysseus out to be a lot more prideful. And I I saw some of that, I saw some of that pride, obviously when he shot the the arrow and hurt the cyclops. You see some of that, because he didn't need that last like no, he didn't need to do that. Here you go. The cyc Yeah, the but the s because the cyclops was already, he wasn't even chasing them. Yeah, you know, but he didn't at the same time, he didn't also he didn't know that they had escaped, right? Um because they disguised themselves.

SPEAKER_01

But that is one thing I will say is it's it's been a long time since I read the story. So, like you're saying, like in the story, he was a lot more prideful up until a certain point. And I think that fit better, but the character as they presented him to me in the movie didn't seem like the kind of guy who would have turned back and just clicked that arrow at him, like it didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time.

SPEAKER_03

I was like, the fuck are you doing? We have to remember that that was already them trying to go home, so that means they would have spent probably 10 to 12 years on the shores of yes, of Troy, right? Uh trying to just be freaking miserable, you know? Um, and so they were ready to go home, and I I think part of that is he just didn't care because cause Hamesh Patel tries to stop him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, cause because yeah, it it just doesn't make sense why he would do it. It's just like, what are you doing, man?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's just a a a gap in a a lapse or a gap in in in judgment as a leader, really.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because you know, you already poked him with that big giant tree. What do you think uh arrow is gonna do to him? It's not gonna do anything but piss him the fuck off.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. And um, you know, I think the other scene we really didn't talk too much about is the you know, towards the end of the movie, you finally get to see the the destruction of Troy.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh. Oh no, that was really good too. And where he's talking about, like you said earlier, talking about, you know, we snuck in under a guise of peace and broke Zeus's law. And yeah, all that was great. I I was really impressed, like not impressed, but at one point in the movie, I really thought they could have fucking put anybody in Agamemnon's costume, and you wouldn't have even noticed because you know, Benny Safti doesn't even say anything until like uh they're in Hades.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and they made that character look daunting anytime he showed up on the screen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he he was uh very imposing force. Yeah. I I also like that there was so much hate on the internet about Elliot Page playing Achilles, Achilles wasn't even in the fucking movie, yeah. Yeah, not only was he not playing Achilles, but Achilles wasn't even in the movie. Like they like they didn't show him at all.

SPEAKER_03

Well, to my recollection, too, like the the the literal Achilles isn't even in the book. It's he's like an afterthought, or there's a there's a moment of a of the ghost of Achilles, I think, but but I don't think there's ever a a literal Achilles because that that takes place this the book in the movie takes place essentially after the Trojan War, right? They show you past sequences of the war, but you're living in the after because it's all it's about the return home.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so that that kind of struck me as funny. Mm-hmm. No, I I really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was very well done. Uh the the adventure was well done.

SPEAKER_03

I think so too. I thought all the stuff shot at sea was really cool. They did that shot at sea. Which Kevin Costner will tell you is a mistake to try, usually. Yeah, I can imagine. Going back to your original question before we went on the tangent. I I might slip the Odyssey into my number six spot in front of Oppenheimer.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, well, it definitely belongs in front of Oppenheimer, that's for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Well, mine goes Interstellar, the Dark Knight Memento, the Prestige, Inception, Oppenheimer, Insomnia, Batman Begins, Tenet, Dunkirk, and you know, other ones. But I think I'm gonna like it even more after my second viewing of it.

SPEAKER_01

I I I hope so too. I hope uh I get into the movie a little bit more earlier.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. You know, and I think now that we've seen the movie, maybe those op the opening sequences might mean something different. Now that you you get the full movie, you're gonna understand maybe why it you know certain aspects of of it are placed there. Because that opening sequence, you had the initial uh sequence with the suitors, you had Matt Damon with the kids when he's hunting the boar. You also had the uh lot selection for the Trojan War in that explanation, uh, when Agamemnon approaches him, right? And he and he bows and he and he gives him his allegiance, and then they do the the the lot for for those who are going to be going to war. So I think a lot happens that's crammed into that first like setting up the movie, you know.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I also liked about the movie is they have the sequence where he's in bed with Anne Hathaway and she's like, Well, you don't know how to do it. Oh, that's right. That's right. You know, they they actually get into the politics of it. That's right, which I appreciate because you know, historically, you know, the story is that you know, the Prince of Troy showed up and fell in love with Helen, and Helen runs away with him. And of course, Agonemnon's brother is pissed because that's his wife. She's the most beautiful woman in all the world. He's taken my wife. And they're like, oh, well, we're gonna go back and get her. And Hathaway's all like, Really? Over a woman? You guys are gonna go to war over a woman? And then Matt Damon's like, well, this is just an excuse for Agamemnon to go to war with Troy over their trade routes. Yep. And I'm like, that's real.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Beautiful. I love that. That was a fantastic moment that they never really talk about in other things. And you know, it took me a while.

SPEAKER_03

It took me probably a good like probably 25 or 30 minutes, maybe a little longer, to feel convinced that I wasn't just watching Matt Damon on screen, you know. Uh, I felt like that sequence with Anne Hathaway is where I started like, okay, yeah, he could I'm I'm starting to to sink into the movie and not think that that it's Matt Damon.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know, um, it took me a little bit. It was hard just to picture Matt Damon as Odysseus, you know. Know um and so uh but I think as the movie went on, I I forgot about it once it once once it ropes you in.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and see that's my problem with Tom Holland, is he did really good in the movie, but it just felt like Tom Holland the whole time.

SPEAKER_03

See, I'm I I feel the complete opposite. I felt like he took on a much more serious role because you see the evolution of his character, right? He goes from being a boy, uh like a literal boy at the beginning of the movie as a little as a toddler, then to being an adult but a boy, but at some point he becomes a man towards the end of the movie. And I really liked that you got to see him grow as the movie goes on, even just his mannerisms and the way he spoke. Um, one guy we're leaving out as Ryan Hearst as mentor, I thought he was the parts that he was in.

SPEAKER_01

And now that we're talking about Ryan Hurst, no, okay, let's put a pin in Ryan Hurst because I had another thought about Tom Holland that I wanted to I wanted to talk about, but we need to put a pin in Ryan Hurst for a second. Okay, okay, okay. But thinking about the evolution of Tom Holland's character, the way that you're describing, makes me realize how good of a performance he gave. And here's what is the scene that is convincing me of that. Because, like you said, he was a child throughout the whole movie. He was a child. My dad is coming home. Stomping my foot. Dad is coming, he's alive, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and you even see it that they almost kill him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they almost kill him, but it's it's really the scene, like that's how he starts the movie. He's the whiny orphan child of Odysseus that all the other suitors think are beneath him. And yes, he will be king one day as long as we don't have any children.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which was a great line.

SPEAKER_03

It was a great line.

SPEAKER_01

But what really did it was when Odysseus sees the dog and the dog's tail goes up and then passes away, and he realizes who Odysseus is.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and he says, Welcome home.

SPEAKER_01

And instead of crying and running to him and embracing him like the character at the beginning of the movie would have, he continue he continues to play the ruse.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and not only that, but in that moment he becomes a man because that was the moment you're right.

SPEAKER_01

And that's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_03

Like that that exchange, that exchange was so powerful because Odysseus tells him because now they've traveled, you would assume they've traveled from Pylos or wherever they were coming from for a a good amount of time to come back home together, right? Yeah. And Odysseus tells him that he's essentially proud of him and who he's become. You know, if your father was here, he'd be very proud of you, type of thing. And uh and uh right there, like Telemachus earns earns the honor from his father, and his his whole attitude completely transforms for the rest of the movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Uh so thinking about it in retrospect, that that was kind of impressive because I believed that. So they they did do a good job with that.

SPEAKER_03

I thought his whole expedition to go find his father, he was excellent in all of it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Now, going back to Ryan Hearst, did you hear what happened to Ryan Hurst? No. Ryan Hurst was cast as the lead in a streaming series of God of War.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yes, something bad happened to him. Oh, he got injured and they removed him or something.

SPEAKER_01

He filmed four episodes and he tore his bicep doing a stunt. And instead of waiting for him to recover, they're gonna recast.

SPEAKER_03

They replaced him. That sucks.

SPEAKER_01

Four episodes. They're gonna recast the lead actor. That sucks. That really sucks. Dank. But I was really surprised. I was surprised when I saw him in the movie. He was great as mentor. He was great, but when when he initially was on screen, I'm looking at it, I was like, is that Opie? You had to take it, you had to like double take. I did. It took me a minute. Like that whole sequence where there was sword fighting, where they were teaching him to sword fight until Tom Holland won, and they showed a close-up of him. I was like, I think that's Opie.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that was a really good casting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he he's always good. I'm happy that he I'm happy to see him still getting work.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um Bill Irwin, I think, played Polyphemus, the the um the Cyclops.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Bill Irwin, I know that name from somewhere.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he's done um other things. Um uh just don't remember what. But yeah, he's he's done some other movies. I think wasn't he in Legion?

SPEAKER_01

You got you gotta remind me. Legion, is that the Paul Bettney movie where he's an angel? No, that was the the TV show that you tried to plug me into. Oh my god, was that him? The guy who played like Amanda Midthunder's like or Amber Midthunder's um second half?

SPEAKER_03

I wanna say so. I've uh I he's Carrie Louder Milk in Legion. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, I didn't even realize that. Wow. Yeah, did you ever get into that show?

SPEAKER_03

I watched a few episodes and honestly, like it was pretty creepy at times for me. So I didn't I I couldn't get through it. The whole sequences with like the devil were just like really intense for me.

SPEAKER_01

Well, well, it was it wasn't the uh devil necessarily, but no, I get it.

SPEAKER_03

Whatever that that other figure was.

SPEAKER_01

The the mutant, yeah. I I forget the I showed I showed the show to my brother. I s I I spent a couple days up there with him when it came out on DVD, and I I was like, We gotta watch all 12 episodes of this. And we got to a certain point in the show, and he's like, Oh my god, is this who the villain is? And he actually went to his DVD collection and we watched the uh X-Men episode from the 90s, the cartoon where they the Shadow King. Yeah, I believe that's what he was called, the Shadow King. But Bill Irwin was so fucking crazy on that show, man. Oh, you know what else he did?

SPEAKER_03

Huh. Now it hits me. Uh, because I was like, he's done something else with Nolan that I was reading about. He actually played uh Tars in Interstellar. He was the he was the guy moving Tars. He was the choreographer of Tars.

SPEAKER_01

That makes sense now. They they have a scene in Legion where he's uh prisoner and he's like in a big bedroom, like they have it, like he's a prisoner in a house, so like the house is uh the room's under guard and the door's locked, there's no other way out of this room but this door, and somebody comes to drop off his food, and he is a tall guy, he's like six foot something, tall, lanky dude, and the person who brings his food is a short woman, and he just keeps like moving with her like he's like dancing, so like he's always behind her, so she's like looking around the room trying to find him, and he would just like shadow her movements until he was able to sneak his way out the door, yeah. And it was one of the craziest things I've ever seen on film.

SPEAKER_03

So it makes sense why he would play the Cyclops, just because those there was a lot of those kind of contortionist-like movements.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was very pronounced, yeah, very dancerly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and the Cyclops had a lot of solo screen time in in in snippets of that that sequence when they were in the cave where it just solely focused on the Cyclops.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that whole sequence with the Cyclops was great. I I did see another meme today, and I don't know if you saw it, but it was like one of those ones where it's like nobody, you know what I mean? Where they they always say nobody, and then they'll be they'll crack a joke. So nobody asked for this, but so it was like nobody, dot dot. And then it was like Odysseus leaving every island he stops at, and it's a picture of Johnny Depp from the second pirates of the Caribbean running from the the villagers.

SPEAKER_03

I've heard people talk about that nobody sequence, you know. Um if I remember writing the book, he has a whole conversation piece with Polyphemus, right?

SPEAKER_01

I don't remember. It's like I said, it's been such a long time, and now that I've seen the movie again, I would like to read the book again.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, me too. I know it was like a requirement in high school, but I've probably haven't read it since then.

SPEAKER_01

I don't I'm trying to remember. I don't think it was a requirement in high school for me. I think we did excerpts of the Canterbury Tales at my school. Oh, okay. But I think in junior high, we did read bits of the Odyssey, like the main bits. Yeah. Like we went through a lot of that, and especially because I think um it was one of those things where my English teacher at the time, because the NBC was doing one of those giant fucking miniseries that they used to do, and they did the Odyssey with Armand Desante, and so she kind of got the idea, and so we read some um of the Odyssey, and that kind of got me into it because I like Greek mythology, I love all that stuff. I would love to read more Greek mythology, I really would. Yeah, I would too. I need to get more into that again. So, overall, you would put the Odyssey sixth as of right now with one viewing in the bag.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And I would go as low as six, but maybe as high as eight.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, I think it could I think it might be able to break my top five, or I might have to rearrange my top five after another viewing.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if it would break my top five. We'd have to see. I think it all depends. The question is, was it a better movie than the Northmen? I liked it better than the Northmen, yes. I don't know. You had that whole sequence with the Valkyrie and the Northmen. You had two dudes.

SPEAKER_03

The Northmen is, in my opinion, by far. I I mean I haven't seen Nosferati, but it's my favorite Eggers movie I've seen. But then again, you have the lighthouse, and it's like, man, those are two wicked performances from Defoe and Pattinson.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, the Northmen has two buck-ass naked dudes sword fighting in front of an active volcano. I mean, does it get better than that?

SPEAKER_03

I don't necessarily care too much for how dark the Northmen is. Obviously, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's Eggers. Eggers is really dark.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's not necessarily my cup of tea. Um, I thought it was a great movie, but I would I would prefer, like, if you know sit me down and say you have to watch one of these movies, I think I'm gonna choose to turn on the Odyssey every single time.

SPEAKER_01

I'm really excited to rewatch Troy. It it didn't occur to me until Arrow announced that as one of its uh September releases. But I haven't seen that movie since it came out in the theater.

SPEAKER_03

I've maybe watched it once since it came out in the theater.

SPEAKER_01

And when I saw it, I wasn't super impressed with it. I remember really liking Eric Banner's character and his story and where that leads. Uh this is a spoiler review for the Odyssey, but I won't spoil Troy for you if you haven't seen it. But you should have seen it by now. I mean, you probably should have seen it by now. The movie's like 20 years old. But um they also include the R-rated director's cut. Oh, really? Which I am told is one of the better directors cuts ever released.

SPEAKER_03

Hmm. That's interesting. I might have to go and pre-order it too, then.

SPEAKER_01

I'm I'm really looking forward to re-watching Troy, and what I like about the Odyssey is it feels like I could watch those movies back to back.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it it's a great double feature because it tells different parts of the story. Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

So I thought that was really cool. Although Agamemnon is much older in the Troy because it's uh Brian Cox.

SPEAKER_03

And he's freaking awesome.

SPEAKER_01

He was great, but Benny Safty was a quiet, menacing presence.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and you also think about how think of the the the difference between John Bernthal and Brendan Gleason playing Menelaus. I mean, that's a giant difference.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I wonder which one's more historically accurate. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Uh it'd be interesting to see. Then you also have the gentleman who plays Eric Banner's father, I forget his name, the older gentleman who's fantastic. Peter O'Toole. Peter O'Toole, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Lawrence of Arabia.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he was fantastic in that movie, too.

SPEAKER_01

Can can I tell you a secret?

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna say no, but you're gonna tell me anyways. So I I've never seen all of Lawrence of Arabia. I'm saving myself to see it until I can find myself a copy of the 4K release because they're so damn expensive. So expensive.

SPEAKER_01

I remember back in the day I had a few opportunities to buy the Blu-ray, and I didn't take it, and I regret that. Yeah, because I think they're out of print now. You know what? I'm gonna kind of check that out while we're sitting here. I'm gonna look on the old eBay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean, I know like the fan has to say. The 4K versions are like a hundred and something dollars, but you can get it with credits if you have a a newer Sony Brabia, because they have this app built into the Sony TVs called Sony Pictures Core or Sony Sony Brabia Core, and you get all of their movies like essentially uncompressed for streaming. It's the closest thing you can get to uncompressed video and audio. Um, so it's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_01

I'm on eBay, and I'm looking at a 4K with a Blu-ray and with a digital Lawrence of Arabia brand new for $35.

SPEAKER_03

A 4K?

SPEAKER_01

4K. I'm gonna send you the link right now.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's that's crazy if that's the case. Um, Arrow also has Go coming out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know if I want to buy that. I mean, I love Go though. I you know, you know me, I love Go. I know. I do enjoy that movie.

SPEAKER_03

I think the one we we would love but don't want to spend the money on is the Stranger Things one.

SPEAKER_01

I've been debating that. Like if if Jen and I want to do that, because I also debate getting rid of Netflix a lot.

SPEAKER_03

You know, if you get rid of it, you want to have you want to be able to turn on and watch Stranger Things whenever you want to.

SPEAKER_01

Like we could go back and re-watch it. Um, there's not a lot on Netflix that are Netflix originals that you want to go back and yeah, rewatch. Well, so anyway, uh, so that was our first spoiler-filled review of a movie.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

First time we've ever ventured in there. I do feel like we got kind of off to a rocky start. But so yeah, this was uh another special. This is part two of our Odyssey series. Next week we will have another Odyssey episode. Do we want to ruin the surprise for that, or should we just tell them what they're gonna get next week? Let's yeah, let's let's tell them. Um, so next week we are going to be featuring um the cast, essentially. We're gonna talk about other great movies that the cast have been in.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. So and you know, we didn't know the full cast until we watched it because a lot of it we went only out of what was billed on the front end of like the posters and stuff. So yeah, uh, you know, like the information we had at the time.

SPEAKER_01

So like we we were all very much under the impression that Charlie's Theron was playing Cersei. Yeah, I believe at the time. Oh, we didn't even know Samantha Morton was in the movie. Yeah, I mean, and I sure as well didn't know that Hamish Patel was in the movie. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I would have I would have chosen uh the most recent Hamish Patel movie I saw, which was um what was it, the arrangement was it on Amazon? The one he did with Elizabeth Olsen. I'm heard he'd drawing a blank on it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, the the assessment.

SPEAKER_03

The assessment, yes, with Alicia Vicander. I would have chosen that one because that was he was fucking great in that movie. I still have not seen that movie. You would really like that movie.

SPEAKER_01

It looked so good, but it's just because these movies disappear so quick.

SPEAKER_03

And that's a great dystopian sci-fi kind of flick.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Let me see what I would have. Oh, that's right. He was in yesterday. I liked yesterday. I did too. My brother was like all about that movie. I think he overhyped it. I need to rewatch that again, but I definitely need to watch um the assessment. But I was really excited for a Hamish Patel, and I was telling the guy at work that we were when we were talking about uh the movie uh that I was really excited about Hamish Patel, uh, because I'm pretty sure he's the second lead of the new X-Files TV show. Ooh. If I'm not mistaken. I don't think he's the lead. I think the girl is supposed to be the lead. Okay. But I I'm not familiar with her at all.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think he's I'm glad he's getting a run on some stuff because he's fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's good. And he was really good in this movie. So next week we have a third Odyssey episode coming out. Last week we uh ranked our Christopher Nolan movies, and this week we reviewed the Odyssey. Uh, I thought potentially I was gonna have a little bit more of a controversial take because of how his last couple movies have landed in my front yard, as it was. I really enjoyed this movie.

SPEAKER_03

I'm glad you did, and I think you'll you'll probably I think after our conversation, maybe too, and maybe some some more seat time when you watch it through another time. I would highly recommend that you go and watch it in theater again because it's a movie that deserves being watched on a big screen with audio that fills the room and um because you're not gonna get that scream of the Cyclops or Matt Damon's scream with the sirens anywhere else like that than in the theater.

SPEAKER_01

I I don't know if I'm gonna be able to carve out time like that again. It's so hard to find three hours to to do that.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it's really ends up being like four hours with between driving, four and a half hours between driving, you got 30 minutes of previews. Yeah, it it ends up being half your day, basically.

SPEAKER_01

I think I probably wait until I could buy a physical media and I'll watch it at home where I could pause it and refill my water, and I got all my snacks here, and it's 75% cheaper. That's my thought process. But yeah, uh, we really enjoyed the Odyssey. We hope you guys enjoyed the Odyssey. Hopefully, you enjoyed our very first special review episode. And um, yeah, that's that's about it, I think.

SPEAKER_03

I think so, sir. If you wanna sign us off, you gotta you gotta give those uh wise Athena eyes of yours uh some beauty rust, sir.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I do. So we are up all night cinema. I'm Wade. This is Adrian. Say goodnight, Adrian. Good night, and Adrian, I return your shame, Adrian.
