And can you share just a little bit about what your summer plans are?

Well, I'm excited this summer because a very close friend of mine is coming to visit me from Australia. So I get to be Texas tour guide, and I live in uptown Dallas. I'm a 30-minute walk to the DMA, and she's also an artist. So we're going to enjoy Dallas Arts. I'm taking her to the Kimball. I haven't been there at the Kimball Museum. And after that, I'm going to focus on my own art, and it's going to be a whole summer of painting.

That's amazing. I see you brought a book to share with our listeners today. Can you tell us why you chose this book and a little bit about it?

Absolutely. It's one of my very favorites. It's Room on the Brim by Julia Donaldson, and it's illustrated by Axel Scheffler. And it's just such a warm, engaging story. And I think that's the most important part about that's engaging, it's it's got this very um humorous rhyming, um, which really engages the children in the story. One of the best comments I've ever heard about this book, which really summarizes it, is it's witty and wonderful.

Mine too. Uh would you like to share just a little bit of the story with our with our students?

Absolutely. The witch had a cat and a hat that was black and long ginger hair in a braid down her back. How the cat and how the witch grinned as they sat on the broomstick and flew through the wind. But how the witch wailed and how the cat spat when the wind blew so wildly it blew off the hat. Down cried the witch, and they flew to the ground. They searched for the hat, but no hat could be found. Then out of the bushes, on thundering paws, there bounded a dog with the hat in his jaws. He dropped it politely, then eagerly said, as the witch pulled the hat firmly down on her head, I am a dog as keen as can be. Is there room on the broom for a dog like me? Yes, cried the witch, and the dog clambered on. The witch tapped the broomstick, and whoosh, they were gone.

It's gonna be so exciting for the kids to hear more. Yes, absolutely. Well, thank you so much, Miss Stewart, for sharing that beginning of Room on a Broom with us. Hopefully, kids will find it on their library shelves or at home and finish it. Uh, we always end our podcast with asking the same question of just what is a book you're currently reading or a book that you remember reading and enjoying when you were a kid.

Well, this book actually, when I first started teaching many, many moons ago, and it's uh the beloved children's story book in Australia by an Australian author, Possum Magic by Mem Fox, illustrated by Julia Vivis. The illustrations are absolutely darling, and the story is just a wonderful relationship of this little possum with her grandmother possum. And there's a lot of magic involved. I won't ruin that for you, but it's definitely worthwhile to read.
