This is the Quest for Stelver with Chris Tuffer on Lifestyles 55 podcasts. Hi, folks, Chris Tuffer here on Lifestyles 55, The Quest for Silver. This is our first perfect show. And that is my unabashed humble opinion. Because if you have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you know that it is true. Because the ultimate answer is 42 and folks. This is our 42nd show. So let's prove it by getting on with the not-so-perfect songs from 1960. Songs that miss the eye of the bull, so to speak. We kicked off the program with a song titled New Orleans. Even though in the song he sings it New Orleans. Gary U.S. Bonds, who, along with his penchant for getting on stage with a crowd-pleasing tune, likes to hit the links from time to time, and is no slouch as he has rubbed shoulders with some of the top greensters. The next number on our perfect list is another singer who also likes the limelight, Freddie Cannon, and one of his few hits about a town in Louisiana that has had hundreds of songs written about it, New Orleans. And, my friends, there is a plethora of nicknames associated with this iconic city. The Creole City, Hollywood South, the city of Yes, Nola, the city that care forgot, the Big Easy, or the Crescent City. This is just a partial list. Our second secondary song from an almost endless list of songs written about New Orleans. By the way, this song about this southern town is older than dirt. Well, not quite, but quite a bit older than our opening number by Gary. This one, way down yonder in New Orleans, mispronounced due to poetic license, was written away down yonder circa nineteen twenty-two.
SPEAKER_09Well way down yonder in the ball in the land above we may sleep. But you know what I mean. Yeah, I think it's whistle wind, and no spot, and then it's give your lady fatal spot and pop. You bet you'll like your anger. Well three old babies with the black and eyes. Who won't you give your lady fair? A little smile, and a little pop. You bet you life, you linger there. A little pop.
SPEAKER_15Well lady, all the time.
SPEAKER_00In nineteen sixty, our feature year on L fifty five, Francis was recognized as the most successful female artist in Germany, Japan, the UK, Italy, Australia, and in just about every other country where records were purchased. Connie was the first woman in history to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. And she had an amazing 53 other career hits.
SPEAKER_08About one year ago, almost to the date, I had the pleasure of introducing on the Perry Como show, and it's my boy, an Italian album that we had recorded. And we're very happy that we did because the album wanted so very many new fans, and more important than that, so many new friends. So we decided to do uh an Italian single because you asked for it, and this was a song that we chose.
SPEAKER_00The song was recorded by Butler and released as a single in 1960. Tony Orlando and Don did their cover of this song in the mid-70s and received permission to alter the title slightly to He Don't Love You Like I Love You, which was part of the combination that vaulted the song to the top of the chart in 1975.
SPEAKER_02Like I love you. If he did, he would break your heart. He don't love you, like God loves you, he's trying to tear us up. I know you're leaving for the new love that you found, the handsome guy that you've been laid in. Whoa, I got a feeling he's gonna put you down because he don't love you like I love you. If he did it, he would break your heart. He don't love you like I love you. He's trying to have us all the heart now. He uses all the great potations, he says the things I wish I could say.
SPEAKER_00Well for these had so many replaces just another play But wait and when the final act is over and you left standing all alone when he takes his bow and makes his exit uh I'll be that big you He don't love you and it never will like God loves you because if he did he wouldn't break your heart when he don't love you The Paradons were a quartet that did not have what might be referred to as a stellar career by virtue of a long list of hits, but nevertheless they created quite a stir in the music industry with this next silver song on our perfect list Diamonds and Pearls. The group appeared on American Bandstand and at the Apollo Theater in the wake of their success. The group soon broke up though, over monetary dispute. Having been together less than a year, despite the group's demise, milestone records released singles from their initial recording session, but these releases and the bells ring all of me, and I had a dream that I did not hear. William Powers and Bill Myers and Jack Weldon and Wes Tyler often played at their school dances and local clubs around Bakersville, California, singing what the audience requested until a chance to record came about with milestone records. And as a result, they did a chart with this next installment on our perfect quest for silver with diamonds and pearls. They're about to sing Angel Baby, which made its radio debut in November 1960, and this was before the group had even received their contract. Rosie wrote the lyrics for Angel Baby as a poem for her very first boyfriend when she was fourteen years old. About a year later, she and some friends rented the only recording studio they could find within a hundred miles of San Diego to record the song. The studio was owned by an airplane mechanic who had taken over part of his airplane hangar to make it suitable for recording. After taking the master recording to a department store, they convinced the manager to play it in the listening booth of the store's music department. The song received a positive reaction from teenage listeners, and a scout from Highland Records offered the group a recording contract under the condition that the company take possession of the master recording, and furthermore, that David Ponson would be named as the author of the song since he was the eldest member of the group. Well, when the contract finally came, Rosie found that she was not eligible to collect record royalties from the song because she was not listed as the songwriter. Well, this led to the group's breakup, and although she did secure the copyright of her music about a year later, decades later, they were still battling over royalties. As a note to music lovers in 1996, Linda Ronstadt recorded a version of Angel Baby for her album Dedicated to the One I Love.
SPEAKER_15Angel baby, I angel baby.
unknownI can hardly stand up.
SPEAKER_15I could never stay away without you near because I love you. I love you as you do. Angel baby.
SPEAKER_00But of course, it is mainly remembered by Bubba Bubba Bing Crosby. It was a popular song with music by Arthur Johnston and lyrics by Johnny Burke. It was introduced by Bing Crosby with Georgie Stole and his orchestra in the 1936 film Pennies from Heaven. Today we have a version that suits our perfect list of silver songs by the Skyliners from Pittsburgh. Best known for their 1959 hit, Since I Don't Have You. Today, they will perform their cover of Pennies from Heaven. I mean too many songs to mention that did indeed reach the top of the charts, but this little number sadly missed the top of the Her success in the 1960s earned her recognition as an over the top female artist of the decade. And one of the four artists who charted the most singles behind Elvis and the Beatles and Randy Charles. Brendan with sweet nothing on L55DR in the Q for S with me, Mr. T.
SPEAKER_11We love it. Nobody else. We walk along handy hands. My baby gave me that special look. Where do I love you ever? Come in, daughter. That's enough for tonight. Sweet.
SPEAKER_00Brooke Banton earned a good living by writing songs and producing albums. He wrote songs for artists such as Nat King Cole, Clyde McVadder, for whom he co-wrote the hit A Lover's Fashion, and Roy Hamilton. And now a twins fan of sorts. As Brooke Benton sings his first of two songs in his hour, beginning with a solo performance in so many ways. And then Underwell with Diana Washington, who was an American singer in the United States, one of the most popular black female recording artists of the 1950s. And she was primarily a jazz vocalist. She performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles, including blues, RB, and traditional pop music, and gave herself the title The Queen of the Blues. Here's our twins win of the day with Brooke Benton and Dinah Washington in so many ways, followed by Baby, you've got what it takes.
SPEAKER_02Your kiss is so divine. Your eyes are like the sky blue, and stars that brightly shine. Your voice is sweet like vines and warm like summer days. And I love you, I love you, I love you, and oh so many, so many ways, your touch is like a breath of strain. You give life to my soul, to me, sweetheart, you're everything I ever hoped to hold a smile from you, lights up my heart, and brightens all my days, and I just love you, I love you, I love you in all so many, so many ways if words could say how much I care, my dear you feel me, but I just love you, I just love you, I love you, and so many, so many twins, well now it takes around to make the lips to melt away the snow when it takes to a pen.
SPEAKER_00You got what it takes, you know which takes a lot of chicks to make a float to make it what it is You know you've got just what it says because it takes more than an effort to stay awake It takes more than a lifetime to prove that it's true What it takes something but it's special to make this thing I do what it is Oh you've got just one take away to stay away from you take all that life time all we through one time all right one more time This next number was written for my wife Well frankly that's part of my delusionary state of mind But there are so few songs with the female subject of Carol that I have to take possession wherever possible, you know? Neil Sadaka and our next contribution to our perfect forty-second program, I am but a fool, darling.
SPEAKER_04I love you, oh you treat me cruel, you hurt me and you make me cry. But if you leave me, I will surely die, darling.
SPEAKER_05There will never be another. Oh Carol, though in love with you, oh Carol, I am but a fool, darling.
SPEAKER_01I love you, though you treat me cruel, you hurt me and you make me cry. But if you leave me, I will surely die.
SPEAKER_05Darling, there will never be another. Cause I love you so don't ever leave me. I will always watch you for my sweetheart, no matter what you do. Oh, Carol, fell in love with you.
SPEAKER_00Kathy Young, and she was very young, as in only fifteen, when she recorded this next song with her backup vocalist called The Innocent. A Thousand Stars. A song written by Eugene Pearson and performed by Kathy Young and the Innocent. The song was produced and arranged by James Lee and was featured on Kathy's uh 1961 album, The Sound of Kathy Young. As a footnote, Sandy Nelson played drums on this record.
SPEAKER_11A thousand stars in the sky, like a star in your eye.
unknownI don't like you are the one that I don't eat that you're gonna do. Oh you are the one love that I told her. Tell me you love me. Tell me your mind once more.
SPEAKER_00What a sad note it is when you consider the impact that Bobby Darren had in the music world to come to his early demise at the age of thirty-seven, due mainly to having had rheumatic fever as a child, which left him with a weak heart. His contribution to the stage and recording studio was enormous. Yet it is what it is. Bobby Darren on Life's Isles 55 and our perfect number 42 show with me, Mr. T.
SPEAKER_16Somewhere beyond the sea, somewhere waiting for me. My lover stands on golden sand and watches the ships that go sail somewhere beyond the sea. She's there watching for me. If I could fly like birds on high and straight to her arm, I'd go say it's far beyond the star, it's near beyond the moon. I know beyond a doubt, my heart will lead me there soon beyond the shore we'll fit just as before. Happy will be on the sea, and never again I'll go safe. Beyond a doubt, my heart will need me there soon. We'll meet, I know we'll meet beyond the shore. We'll kiss just as before. Happy will be beyond the sea and never again now go sail. No more sailing. So long sailing. Bye bye Sail.
SPEAKER_00It has been said that due to Jackie Wilson's fervor when performing with his dynamic dance moves, impassioned singing, and fashion sense, he was nicknamed Mr. Excitement, a moniker that remained throughout his career. His stage craft and his live shows inspired James Brown and Teddy Panderg and Michael Jackson and even Elvis Presley, as well as a host of other artists that followed. Presley was so impressed with Wilson that he made it a point to meet him. And the two instantly became good friends. And a photo of the two posing together, Presley's caption in the autograph reading You got you a friend for life. Wilson was sometimes called the black eld. Reportedly, when asked about this, Presley said, I guess that makes me the white heart of Jackie Wilson. Wilson also said he was influenced by Presley, saying a lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music. When in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis. This is Jackie Wilson with a tune entitled Night.
SPEAKER_02Here comes the night, another knot to dream about you to only know the only time I'm not with you. Once more, I know what you're doing, come back in some, I feel your kiss.
SPEAKER_00It was featured on his 1960 album Love You So, and the song ranked at number 48 on Billboard magazine's top one hundred singles of nineteen sixty.
SPEAKER_10Away alive, no matter what I mean you remember, my love is true.
SPEAKER_15We have a love that should be true love for all each other.
SPEAKER_00Don't run, unless you're the speedy roadrunner bird running away from wily coyote. A ventures will close the window on our quest for silver show number forty two, a perfect example of great old songs. I'm Christopher, with much gracias for you, who like what we do for you with songs from the mid twentieth century. So until we meet again, be cool and stay warm.
