Hi folks, Chris Tuffer here with our show called The Quest for Silver. And over the course of the musical chart history, some artists at the various points in their careers have made scoring number one hits look like a piece of cake. And yet, if you asked our first performers today, you would get an opinion that differs. They are one-hit wonders, and yet did very well with the opening selection today, Do It Again just a little bit slower, referring to what a kiss is like when you can't get enough. John and Robin were a husband and wife team from Dallas, Texas, and were known for their 1967 single release. Do it again just a little bit slower. The song written by Wayne Carson Thompson, and was considered slightly risque for its time. John and Robin made the singles chart two more times, but never came close to repeating their initial success. Next up is Getting Us Down to the Nitty Gritty by Shirley Ellis. She is better known for her novelty song The Name Game, but the song preceded that one in 1963, one year prior to the name game. The years are only a minor nuisance to our memory. And great number two songs of the 20th century. Shirley Ellis with The Nitty Gritty.

SPEAKER_10

Some folks know about it, some don't. Some will learn to shout it, some won't. But sooner or later, baby, here's a ditty. Say you're gonna have to get right down to the real nitty gritty. Let's get right down to the real nitty gritty now. One, two. Right down to the real nitty gritty. Double beatin', double beating, right down to the nitty-gritty, yeah. I double beating. I keep repeating right down to the nitty-gritty. The hoo double beatin' double beatin' double beatin' to the right down to the nitty gritty, double beatin' double beatin' Keep repeating, right down to the Andy gritty hair. Let's let's get right on down to the real nitty gritty gritty one, two, nitty gritty, night yell, boom nitty gritty, hoo weight down to the real nitty gritty Get on down. Get down right down to the real nitty to the real nitty gritty.

Dead Man's Curve by Jan Dean is a nineteen sixty-four hit song whose lyrics detail a teen street race, gone awry. It was part of the teenage tragedy song phenomenon of that period, and one of the most popular such selections of all time. Dead Man's Curve was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. The singer goes out for a leisurely drive one night in his Corvette Stingray, when a driver pulls up alongside in his Jaguar XKE and challenges him to a drag race. Coincidentally, Jan Berry of Janendean would himself later be involved in a near fatal incident in 1966 when he crashed his own stingray into a parked truck on North Whittier Drive, near, but not on, Dead Man's Curve.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve, and then I saw the jag slide into the curve. I know I'll never forget that horrible sight. I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right.

SPEAKER_08

Love me with all your heart is up for your easy listening pleasure on L55DR, and the Q for S with me, Mr. T. By the way, what made them the Ray Charles singers was the conducting and arranging by Ray Charles. He generally recorded with twenty singers, twelve men and eight women. And these vocalists appeared on Perry Como's television show. The Ray Charles singers were also the voices behind many commercial jingles in the nineteen sixties. Their debut single, Don't Let the Rain Come Down, Crooked Little Man, was a top ten hit and received the group's only Grammy nomination in 1965.

SPEAKER_03

I might come let the rain come down. Don't let the rain come down. Oh yes, Marus got a hold of it. I'm not gonna come down to the ready to come down to the man's broken.

SPEAKER_08

The song told the story of a girl lonely for her steady boyfriend away from home in the US Navy and anxious to see him again. Navy Blue became a national smash. The song was followed by Renee's debut album, also entitled Navy Blue.

SPEAKER_05

I'm as good as I can be.

A very popular American folk song about the murder of Billy Lyons by Stag. Stag, of course, is his nickname, Lee Shelton, in St. Louis, Missouri, at Christmas of 1895. The song was first published in 1911 and first recorded in 1923, entitled Staggerly Blue. The historical Staggerly was Lee Shelton, an African-American pimper living in St. Louis, Missouri, uh, in the late 19th century. He was nicknamed Staggerly, and Shelton was well known locally as one of the group of pimps who attracted attention through their flashy clothing and appearance. In addition to those activities, he was the captain of a Black 400 Club, a social club with a dubious reputation. On Christmas night in 1895, Shelton and his acquaintance, Billy Lyons, were drinking in the middle court of a saloon. Eventually, the two men got into a dispute during which Lyons took Shelton's hats and hat. Subsequently, Shelton shot Lyons, recovered his hat, and left. Lyons died of his injuries, and Shelton was charged, tried, and convicted of the murder in 1897. He was paroled in 1909, but returned to prison two years later for assault and robbery. He died incarcerated in 1912. The crime quickly entered into American folklore, and became the subject of the song we now know as Staggerly. This is an L fifty five DR. Euphores twin spin of Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price, followed by Tommy Rowe.

I was standing on the corner when I heard my phone call parking. It was wide enough to do a galaxy in the dark.

SPEAKER_04

It was like a lead to the day.

SPEAKER_07

Twins, spin, spin.

SPEAKER_16

SPEAKER_08

A trumpeter from the age of six, with a trumpet acquired from a pawn shot by his father. He suffered an early injury to his upper lip during the annual celebration of the murderer. But it was very fortunate that it did not adversely affect his road with a trumpet. And he went on to record his biggest head. Not only a Grammy Award for Java. It was her first and became a signature song. We are L 55 DR and the Q for S with me, Mr. T.

SPEAKER_11

Oh no. How can I tell if you love me so? Is it in his eye? Oh no, you'll be deceived. Is it in his eye? Oh no, you'll make me leave if you wanna know. If he loves him soul, it's in his kiss. Oh, it's in his kiss. That's where it is. Oh tight and find out what you wanna know. You're in his love, if it really is. About the way, yes. Oh no, that's not the way, and you're not listening to all I say. If you wouldn't know, should be loving so much in his kid. That's where it is, yes, in this kid. That's where it is. And find out what you wanna learn. Yo, if you know, if it's really here, is there in his kiss? How about the way? Oh no, that's not the way, and you're not listening to all I say. If you wanna know, should be loving the sin is kissed. That's where it is.

SPEAKER_08

1963 was certainly a good year for the DC five, and today we have a twin spin of their two biggest hits that year. Glad all over, and can't you see that she's mine.

unknown

You say that you love me, you love me all of the time, all of the time. You say that you leave me, say you need me.

SPEAKER_04

I'll be mine, I'll wait for my job.

SPEAKER_07

Twins fear.

SPEAKER_04

Whoa, can't you see that you smile? We've been together for a long time. I get to try so very hard, to pull us apart. But we don't care what they say.

She garnered approval for a blue-eyed soul, hot, and dramatic ballad with a hundred and jazz in her repertoire. As well as in performances here's a classic does he spring field number called I Only Wanna Be With You. Her first top ten hit. A head of wishing and hoping. You don't have to say you love me.

unknown

Don't know what it is who makes me love you so. I only know I never wanna let you go. Cause you started something to see. That ever since we met, you had a whole It happens to be true. It doesn't matter where you go or what you will do. I wanna spend each one up and stay with you. Oh God is happening to spot you. I never know that I can be on the too I wanted to be winning to do that.

SPEAKER_08

The band coming up now called the Tams formed in 1960 and took their name from the Tam O'Shatter hats they wore on stage. The group reached the number one slot on the UK singles chart in September 1971 with the reissue of Hey Girl Don't Bother Me. The searchers are up now on our quest for silver songs, and they are tied for being the second group from Liverpool after the Beatles to have a hit in the U.S. where their needles and hins and swinging blue hands and heavy heavy shake 1194. The high record single was released in January 64, and in April of that year, Noodles and Hens appeared on the searchers and album. Listen to this. If you crack up the volume, you can actually hear the faulty big drum pedal which squeaks throughout the song. It is particularly noticeable during the opening of the number.

SPEAKER_04

I saw her today, I saw the face, was my side level, but I knew I had to go away from my reason for me. That we go away soon as we get done. Because I'm all my pride.

unknown

She's resting on me. Let her look for it. Take it to love instead. I'm gonna shoot just how you should.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna get that on your wings. She feels me on time.

unknown

Why can I stop? And tell myself I'm wrong. I'm wrong, so why can I step up? Tell myself I'm stalled to face.

SPEAKER_08

I'm Christopher on Lifestyles 55, and our quest for silver has come to the point of concluding with yet another twin spin. This time by Frankie Valley in the four seasons. First up is why must I be alone? Something I've pondered more than once. And followed by the classic four seasons with Don Go Away. Okay? And remember to be cool and stay warm.

SPEAKER_04

I can't believe I'll give you how can I be alone? Oh must I dream alone.

unknown

I think what they're share.

SPEAKER_04

How can I dream of? There's such a thing that you forgive me. So why can't you forgive? There's such a thing that you forgave me. Can you forgive and fuck? Can you forget about it?

SPEAKER_07

Twin spin spin.

SPEAKER_01

Pretty as a midsummer's mor. They called her doll.

unknown

Oh, dog will be good to you.

SPEAKER_01

I love, I ain't gone, I'm gonna think, think what a big man you'll be. Think, think of the faces you'll say, now think what the future would be with a poor boy like me. I want you to say what your family would say.
