What if I told you there's an animal that can regrow its arms, its legs, its tail, and even parts of its heart and brain, and it never really grows up. It's real. And it looks like a smiling water dragon. Today we're diving into one of the weirdest and most amazing creatures in nature the axolotl. Hey, explorers, welcome back to the Nature Loving Kids podcast, where we discover the most amazing things about the world God made. I'm your host, Garrett Maroon, and I'm here with my two favorite animal experts. Hi, I'm Hattie, and I've seen pictures of axolotls. They look like they're always smiling. And I'm Ivy and they look like Pokemon. They really do. But axolotls are very real and very incredible. So what is an axolotl? An axolotl is a type of salamander. But here's what makes it different. It never grows up. What do you mean? Most salamanders start as babies in water with gills. Then they grow up, lose their gills, and move on to land. Axolotls, don't they keep their gills, stay underwater, stay in their baby form, and still become adults? So they're grown ups that look like babies? Exactly. Scientists call this neoteny when an animal keeps its young features for life. Now. For the wildest part, though, axolotls can regrow, body parts aren't their tails. Even more than that, they can regrow legs, arms, tails, parts of their heart, parts of their spinal cord, even parts of their brain. That's insane. And they don't grow back scars. The new body part works just like the original. Scientists study axolotls to learn how regeneration works, hoping one day it could help people heal better. All right. Time for some jokes. What do you have for us, Ivy Lane? How did the salamander learn so much? How he would always axolotl. Questions, huh? What do you call a tiny axolotl? What a axolotl. Oh, axolotls come from only one place in the world. Lake Sochi. Milko in Mexico. Just one lake? Yes. And sadly, in the wild. Axolotls are now critically endangered. Pollution and habitat loss have made it harder for them to survive in nature. That's sad. It is. But scientists and conservationists are working to protect them right now. Now let's talk about their look. Axolotls have frilly pink gills sticking out of their heads, tiny eyes, and wide mouths that look like smiles. Ask your mom or dad to show you a picture or just click the link in the show notes. And they always look like they're happy. That's just how their mouths are shaped, but it definitely makes them look friendly. Those frilly gills help them breathe underwater. They wave gently in the water to pull in oxygen. Let's do some more jokes. Oh, my salamander pet. This is just beer. I named it relax. Water. What do you call a grateful salamander? What a think. So, animal. Axolotls remind us how much we still have to learn about nature. Life. They show us healing, adaptation, survival and design. It's like God put extra creativity in this one. It really feels that way. Even the strangest creatures have purpose and beauty. Think about this. An animal that never grows up. Lives underwater its whole life and can rebuild its own body. Nature is more creative than we could ever imagine. Axolotls aren't just cute. They're one of the most fascinating animals on Earth.
