Thriving Not Surviving with DENISE BOSSARTE

Tiffany Barnes/ Denise Bossarte Season 3 Episode 53

Denise Bossarte Is a survirvor of sexual abuse and has spent her adulthood healing herself from the abuse she has experienced in life. She is an award-winning writer, author and photographer and certified mediation facilitator and holds a PhD in Neuroscience.

Her Past Story

Her mother’s father was the source of sexual abuse to her as a young child. “It mostly happened when we spent the summers with my grandparents on the lake.” her parents didn’t know what was happening, and the abuse continued until her sophomore year in high school when her grandfather died. “I learned to disassociate from my body when the abuse was happening and really disconnected in many ways to survive.

Denise’s memories came flooding back after her grandfather died, and she had to learn how to process her trauma. Because she had accolades at school for being a good student, Denise latched onto her schooling for positive reinforcement. She kept herself busy so she wouldn’t have to deal with the trauma.

First Relationship

She started dating late in high school and into college, where she met her first serious boyfriend, a former alcoholic. Denise told her boyfriend about her abuse, and he realized she needed help and assisted her in getting help. “That was the first time I was able to go to a counselor who got me into a group of women survivors.” She learned how many others had gone through sexual trauma and found out that her talk therapy wasn’t enough to move forward in her life.

Alternative Modalities for Healing Trauma

Denise explored and tried many different alternative healing modalities such as mediation and yoga. While experimenting with healing modalities, she found a system that worked for her in her healing journey.

Why Write Her Book on Abuse

When Denise heard the story of the gymnast who had been sexually abused, this triggered her to write her story. She has coined the term “Thriver” as she wanted her story to feel that she moved beyond her abuse and is now enjoying herself and her life.
