Hello, everybody. Welcome back to I'll read what she's reading. I'm Reggie. I'm Michaela. And I'm Kennedy. And we're discussing our most anticipated movie release and one of our favorite books ever, Project Hell Mary by Andy Weir. So if you have not read the book, haven't seen the movie Skidaddle, because we're going to be talking all things Ryland Grace. And I'm very excited. And Rocky. And Rocky. And Rocky. Can't forget about that guy. Can't forget about him, the star of the show. We are going to kind of do if you listen to our People We Meet on Vacation episode, this will be pretty similar. But we're going to be talking about what we rated the book, what we rated the movie, and then just kind of the differences between the book and the movie. And we also got some feedback from you guys as listeners to kind of compare and see what everyone's overall thoughts were. So to kind of kick it off, what did you guys rate the book? I rated it four stars. Um I said in my review the only reason I didn't rate it five stars is because the science elements were really hard for me to follow at times. My husband, who has not read the book, he like deep dived into Project Hilmary. He was listening to all these podcast episodes with Ryan Gosling and Andy Ware. And Kyle was like, Did you know he was a what was he? Uh he's an engineer. Yeah, a spaceship or like a yeah, a rocket scientist. So the man is smart. He's so smart. Smarty guy. And sometimes with his books, they're just he goes so into so much detail with the science that it feels like you're reading a textbook. So I do remember loving the book, but the science was a little too much for me. So yeah. I said I I said I rated it 3.5. Um I also read it almost two and two years ago. Yeah. Same. And I feel like my reading taste has changed a lot more, so I feel like I would appreciate it maybe a little bit more, but pretty much my review was not anything having to do with him. It just more so was about me. Not like really understanding things. And um I just felt a little lost when it came to the science talk and stuff like that, you know, equations. Just I fear it went right over my head. But yeah, well, also, did you guys listen to it? Or did you read it? I did. I think listening to it also would have made that a lot harder because I read the book. Yeah. I didn't listen to it. So but besides that, the the entire plot of it was just it was really good. Minus the science stuff. But the science stuff was necessary to it. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, I really, I really liked it. I I'm glad I didn't reread it because I feel like I would have been very comparative to the movie and the book because I feel like a lot of people were comparative to it, especially like my own family members and friends who had just barely read it, and they're like, What about this? What about this? I'm like, I genuinely didn't remember that, or like I forgot about that part. And so I'm like glad that I got to experience it and not like uh have this hair heavy contrast between the book and the movie, and I got to have a little bit, I feel like an enjoyment for it. Almost like the movie was me re-reading it and kind of remembering things. So which I really enjoyed that. So I agree. I'm really glad I didn't reread it. I thought about it, yeah, but I'm glad I didn't. I honestly think maybe in a few months I would re-listen to it. Yeah. Now just to see. Obviously, I know things that were cut out just based on social media and just through talking to people, but I think that's honestly the way to do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Don't read the book too close to the movie. Yeah. Because then it ruins your experience for sure.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Because I thought it was perfect. Yeah, same. What did you rate it already? Four stars? Yeah. You guys, 74% of you rated the book five stars, and 23% rated it four stars, and then a smaller amount rated it three. So three and up. I would say that's pretty dang good. Yeah. For a book. Yeah, no, I think um it's a very well-liked book. Like, I feel like it's very rare that I see anyone reading it lower than a three. I I did see um Mariana posted a TikTok and said she was gonna DNF it. What? Yeah, she was like, I'm reading a certain book right now that it's beloved and it has over four point star rating on Goodreads, but I don't like the main character and I don't like the story. I'm paraphrasing, okay? She didn't say exactly those words, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it was about Project Hail Mary because I think in the comments people were guessing that it was Project Hail Mary. Oh, interesting. Which I could see, like, this is a true sci-fi book. Yeah. If you don't like true sci-fi, like I'm not even talking sci fantasy, whatever. This is just straight up sci-fi. And if you don't like sci-fi or if you haven't read a lot of sci-fi books, I could see not liking this. Yeah, but I feel like it would be interesting if she did continue what she'd actually rate it. You know, like she says, like, oh, I'm maybe gonna DFN DNF it because what at what part is she at? Very true, you know. Good point. Because then after she actually finished it, I would bet she would rate it three star stars or higher. Yeah, you know, yeah, like my sister-in-law read it, she's just likes fantasy books, and she was like, I'm on chapter like 12, I don't know how I'm feeling about this. And I was like, had to like look up when Rocky's introduced, and I think it's like chapter 14 or something, and I was like, just give it a couple more chapters, and if you decide you don't want to read it, you don't have to read it. And then she really liked it. I think what's cool about this book too is that people with a lot of different tastes have really enjoyed it, and I think it's just because the heart of the story itself is just so well liked by so many people because there's so many books out there, and I'm not saying there's not any books like I mean, I don't know. I mean, if there are books similar to Project Hell Mary, I'm sure there are, but like specifically with the way that Andy Weir did it, there's just something about this story that people cheer for that you don't see end of the world, there's a lot of end of the world kind of books. Yeah. And the way people were comparing, I saw um, it was Ma that did an interview with Ryan Gosling or Andy Weir. She did one with both of them, but she was saying how to beetle of my dreams. I know, right? She was saying how like The Martian is the world trying to save one man, and how Project Hell Mary is one man trying to save the world, and just the way that he wrote the story of the one man trying to save the world to me felt very unique, and maybe it's just because it was specifically a sci-fi book, but just done so well. Like the heart of the story is what people really like about it. I don't think anyone's like, Oh, I loved it specifically for the science. Like, it's hard to pinpoint something from the book that someone would probably like more than the heart of the story itself, you know. But I think that's why so many people love it. I think it's just easily easily marketable to a lot of people. You're going to have people who maybe do love the science aspect, and there is a lot of science-heavy moments. And then there's that suspense of is he going to save the world? Is he not going to save the world? There's maybe not romance, but there's a bromance. So I feel like genuinely this is a book you could honestly probably recommend to 85% of people and they would enjoy it. Yeah. As long as they make it to when Rocky gets there. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it and it's funny to kinda kind of transition into like the movie. I feel like there was a lot of discourse around like people saying getting upset about the trailer because they show too much Rocky and whatever. But I've had a number of people that have seen the movie who didn't read the book, having not seen the trailer before they went to the movie. Like my mom for a minute was like, Dad says he thinks it's gonna be like some sort of alien movie, and I hate alien movies. I hate like creepy alien stuff. And I'm just over there like, I think you're gonna like this alien movie. But I wouldn't say that to her. And then I had a friend that was like, I thought it was gonna turn into a horror movie for a second. Like, she was like, it was this gonna scare me. Like, am I gonna be scared of this alien? Like, cause the beginning felt kind of like lighthearted, you know? And then she's like, Oh, maybe it's gonna take this like crazy 180, and there's gonna be this like creepy, I don't know. So it's fun to see people's reaction to the book and also didn't see the trailer, which I feel like is pretty rare. But I think we have said on the podcast before that we were upset about the trailer, but I can kind of I think they maybe did a little too much with Rocky and some of the ways that they have promoted it, but like the first initial trailer, I can see why they did it because Rocky is introduced a lot earlier in the book than I thought he was originally. I mean, I'm sure everybody who's listened to this has seen the interview with Andy Ware where he says it's not a spoiler. So I mean, it's hard to debate when the author himself is like, it's okay to include it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But and I do think having it in the trailer does appeal to a lot more people. I just really think, kind of like what you were saying, Reggie, they could have just shown so much less. Like the scene where he first sees him, they could have literally shown the scene where Rocky has the ship and Rylan, and he's like telling him to go back in the ship. You get the gist that there's an extraterrestrial being, but you don't fully see them working together. Do you know what I mean? And even in the synopsis of the book, I'm pretty sure it says that he meets an unlikely friend. Yeah. So you know there's going to be some sort of alien involved, but I don't know. I feel like in general, movie trailers are just like show a little too much. I get it. They have to do marketing, and if that's the way they feel like they have to do it, I get it. But I feel like the people who actually don't have to be marketed to are upset by the way they go about it, you know what I'm saying? Um, but I feel like I just chose not to watch after the first me too. One that came out because I was like, I just want to go into it. I know, I know what the premise is, and I just want to go into it without seeing stuff, you know? Yeah. So a lot of you guys are basically just kind it's very 50-50 on this form that you guys filled out. Some of you say it's a huge spoiler, some people think it was vague enough. It's literally just 50-50, which is a good thing. I'd be curious if they saw the like most recent trailer that was released before the Super Bowl, because that one was crazy. It literally shows him trying to find Rocky's voice, Rocky coming in the ship and like rolling around in the ball, and I was like, Yeah. I want the thing is I feel like I have yet to be surprised in movies recently because they just give it away. I want to be surprised, you know? I don't know. I think it would be fun, and also especially for the people that have not read the book, like you said, the people who didn't watch the trailer hadn't read the book, it's kind of fun that they go into it a little blind and they're like, Oh, it's a it's a completely different experience. Yeah, you know. We went with a set of two couples who we told them, we said, Don't don't watch the trailer, don't watch the trailer. And both of the people, when I asked them, like, was this movie was what was it what you were expecting, and they both said no. It was better than they ever could have imagined.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So they probably still would have enjoyed it just as much had they not watched the trailer. And you know, they obviously marketed it right because it's killing it in the box office. So if this means that more books get turned into adaptations in this type of way, sure, show Rocky. I don't care. Sure. Sure, sure. I mean, Ryan Gosling said it's fine, Andy Ware says it's fine, so I guess it's fine. Yeah, I can't. I guess I was way more upset about it when it first came out than like it was like later. I had to like take a chill pill. I had to take a chill pill and be like, okay, fine, whatever. So what did you guys rate the movie? Five stars. Five. And I knew I'm not saying the book is better than the movie, okay? Or the movie's better than book. I'm not saying either one is better than the other. I think there's strong suits to both mediums in this specific case. I think for me, and I know some people disagreed, they wish they would have shown more of the science aspect of the story. But to me, like what Reggie said at the beginning, it's not the heart of the story. The heart of the story is Rocky and Ryland's relationship. And also, I think watching it a second time, I do think that a lot of people had a problem with the fact that they didn't feel like his memory, the the fact that he couldn't remember things wasn't portrayed as much in the movie. Watching it a second time, I'm gonna disagree on that. Because while it's maybe not completely like talked about, the amount of little scenes where he's writing on the whiteboard trying to figure out things about himself, they show that a ton of times. I think they did it enough, in my opinion, showing that he couldn't remember things through, I don't want to use say B-roll. How is he realistically in a movie format? How is he supposed to show that he can't remember things? Because we're not in his head. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00So I think they did it in a really nice way, but I just truly I I didn't want anything else more from the adaptation. I couldn't think of one single thing when I left that theater wishing that I had more. It's perfect. Yeah. So let's start with dislikes, if we have any dislikes, or things that we wish maybe had changed or were included or taken out. Yes. The only thing I w disliked is I wish Silent Times by Harry Styles. Like his actual version was in it. Like the how they had it in the trailer. A lot of people were angry about the karaoke sing. I'm not I'm not angry. I just wish it would have like kind of like did a callback to her singing it when she's like, I don't know, some even the credits in some way, you know, because I feel like it's just really just like an epic song. And it well um Ryan Gosling even says that like that was like the anthem for the movie. Yeah. When they heard that song, they were like, we have to because like it was the act okay, I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure the actress that played Stra, they were like, they talked about wanting to do a karaoke scene, and she said that's the song she wanted to do. Love it. So then from there it was like they were like, Are you sure like it's Harry Styles? And she was like, Yes, that's that's what it needs to be. Cause I and anyways, yeah, I think a callback to that would have been cool, especially after the karaoke scene. Yeah, like even if it was just like instrumental, yeah, that would have been epic. Or imagine if him and Rocky were singing, you know what I mean? Like he's humming it at some point. I don't know. Something. So you know that perfect moment where you have a good book, but nowhere to be. Yeah, that right there, that is my happy place. Because every good reader deserves the best blanket. Well, it's interesting that you talk about the memory thing because when I left the theater and we saw it for the first time, I'll never get over that experience actually. Because like an IMAX, if you can see it in IMAX. Yeah, please do. Insane. That was like the one thing that if I I told my husband, I was like, if I had to pick one thing, it would be that I wish that there would have been a little more with the memory loss thing. Seeing it a second time, I was like, okay, yeah, but like anyone else, like I had a conversation with my parents about it because they were like asking like the differences from the book and movie. I'm like, there's honestly not a ton of huge, huge differences. But I was like, that's one thing I wish, and my parents didn't quite grasp that. They're like, oh, they're like, I thought he remembered everything once he like from the earlier in the and I was like, no, like his memories were slowly coming together because I felt like that was like a big, huge plot twist. Yeah, you find it. Like it still was in the movie, but like the scenes that are going on during that time are like him, he's like walking. I want to say it goes from him like walking through Rocky's spaceship, which is also different from the book, and then it goes into that scene, and then it jumps to him just kind of like having there's like a scene, he's just sitting there feeling a little bit sad, and then it just like kind of moves on. I don't really know how else they could have done that, but I wish there would have been maybe a little more emphasis, like, I don't really know how they would have done it, but yeah, especially with that scene specifically, like that. Like a big huge thing where he's like, Oh, I was forced to be here. Well, and also in the book, she calls him a coward. Like, she's like, You're a coward. She was a little more mean and intense. She was way more mean in the book, yeah. Yeah. I think as people who didn't read the books, I did have to explain that to a bunch of people. Like, they were like, they were like, Did that go did it go back and forth? I did have some people say that to me too. And I was like, Yes. And when you were going back, that was when he was remembering things. You're like, oh. So I think it's just hard as like non-book readers, they probably just could not pick up on that. Yeah. It's it's hard for them to pick up on something like that, besides if you have read the book. Yeah, for sure. Um, which I I don't know how they would have changed it, but they could have made it maybe more visceral reactions. Yes, and like the cuts when you go back in time, maybe it's more of like a I'm not talking like a that's so revenge moment. Something where it's yeah, you see him maybe reacting to having like this jolt of memory. But yeah, the first time I watched it, I didn't feel like they really showed the memory loss. But then the second time, not that I was paying more attention, but like they do show the whiteboard a lot where he's writing a lot of questions, like kind of writing answers, like figuring out who he is. So the second time around, I noticed that they did, they tried, and I felt satisfied. But you are right, like I had the context of the book, and had I not had that, maybe it would have been a lot more confusing. It's funny. I'm not I once again, I thought it was perfect. I don't have a dislike, but I remember having a conversation with my husband after, and I was asking him, I said, Did you feel like it was too long? What what did you not like? Whatever. And he literally said that karaoke scene felt so random to me. As a reader of the book, I'm pretty sure if I'm remembering correctly, like Ryland sings karaoke in the book, doesn't he? I couldn't tell you. I I I I swear there's something that has to do with karaoke in the book, so it's kind of an ode to the book, I feel like. And also, I if I had to be nitpicky, maybe maybe you guys didn't catch this gist, but I kind of didn't love like the not that there was a romantic like maybe I was the only one. Yeah, no, and maybe it's just because it's Ryan Gosling and he has chemistry with a rock.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00But that's the one thing that I'm like, maybe like I do maybe wish she was a little bit more mean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But maybe they wanted her to seem more sympathetic. Yeah, there was like the a weird sexual tension. I don't know, like maybe not sexual, but there was like this weird like like the boat scene when they're on the boat. I was kind of feeling like they were like flirting with each other a little bit. But it's funny because there is there's that part where I want to say like it's the scene before or after when Rocky's asks him if he has a mate, and then it kind of shows them I don't know. Yeah. I mean the care a lot of people also had did sorry, hold on. Let me like redo that. I wasn't trying to like distract from that conversation. I'm just gonna not say what I was saying. Um sorry I feel like it was fine, yeah. Okay, sorry. I was like, my my my brain was just like my mouth was talking faster than my brain was computing. Um yeah, I've seen a lot of people say that they thought the karaoke scene was random. I think especially because she performed like a song, but I'm honestly not mad that they didn't make her super mean. I mean, they could have made her more mean. I feel like it makes her more human. Well, yeah, she's way more sympathetic. So then when she does forcibly put him in a coma, you feel for her a little bit more rather than hate her. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And I also think that the karaoke scene, because I had someone else tell me they're like, that felt weird. I feel like it was important because that's when he has like because they're having that party. Maybe this actual singing itself of her singing maybe felt random, but that's like the scene where he kind of is realizing, like, why are people doing like this is so stupid that they're kind of celebrating and they know they're gonna die.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00It kind of makes his decision to be like, no, I'm not gonna go feel a little that like that much the weight of that hits a little bit more. But I really liked it. Yeah. I don't know if I can really think of anything I don't know. I just feel like I really didn't have a vivid uh imagination for it and I think it was intentional because Andy wire Wy Wire Wire says that he can't picture things in the background. He's one of those people that doesn't picture things when he writes. And so he he like knows other people there but like nothing in the background. So I think like it was really cool to like see this visual element to the story. And I don't have anything nit to nitpick about it because I think it was really cool to see this story brought to life. And um I did have someone say that they felt like Rocky's ship was a lot different than they imagined it when they read it. I don't remember what it was described as at all. But I mean it was very unique and different. Yeah it was cool. I mean when you when you think about it when he's walking through his little ship and he's touching all these things that's how he that's how they keep echolocation. Yeah. So it makes sense. Yeah. No I thought it was really cool but I get if like that's not exactly how you would imagine a ship you know but I thought it was cool. I didn't really I don't really I don't have anything else to really nitpick besides I wish the times wasn't it. Yeah like for like Harry's Yeah I feel like from what I've heard from my friends and family has just been my brother in laws really wanted more science but I'm like I just don't know if they need it I don't think it needed that my husband did say he's like the only thing that like threw me off and he's like I wouldn't even say if this is like a dislike but he's like I felt like Rocky was a lot more childlike in this movie than in the book. He was like he was like a lot more annoying whereas in the book he felt like Rocky felt a little more I'm trying to think of the word he used to describe it a little more human in a sense whereas like maybe not human's the right word but yeah he was like Rocky was kind of an really annoying in the movie but like I didn't get that vibe from him at all in the book. I think he what I've heard people say is that Rocky is a literal genius and he's so intelligent but in the book they make him seem like he's yeah a child but I think that makes you I almost feel like it makes you the the fact that he feels a little bit more childlike makes you feel more of an attachment. Yeah. Yeah I also think the words slash verbiage that he like Ryland added into his computer wasn't like all comprehensive. Yeah. And he they combined he combined words that maybe would mean similar things into just one. And so it maybe sounds dumber because I feel like that would make more sense. Yeah. When communicating and like having like words equal a noise you know what I'm saying? Like almost you have to kind of do a little bit of like baby talk to like dumb it down.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because I feel like Rocky's vocabulary is way more extensive than even the English language you know? Yeah. So like he probably was like on the behind the scenes was maybe a little bit this means similar but Ryan was just put it like not Ryan. Ryland Rylan just as the same word. Yeah yeah yeah for sure for sure um we can go through some of the other differences that you guys are mentioning that wasn't included. So obviously I feel like one of the biggest ones is Antarctica. Yeah um they didn't include that obviously um a lot of people were upset about the no coma thing or the coma gene and the fact that the coma gene wasn't mentioned and how Ryland just happened to be one of the people that had the gene. I wonder why they're I forgot about that detail. Yeah I wonder why they did it would have been hard for them to include it. That's the thing is cause it would have taken very little time. Maybe it's I was gonna say maybe it's to make it make him feel less even I don't I don't know to make him look worse. Yeah. But I also feel like if he was one of the few people that had the coma gene and he still decided not to go that makes him look worse. I don't know. Yeah I don't know it's an interesting thing that they decided to it's always interesting what they decide to cut and what they keep. Yeah. Um there's also the whole I remember there being a lot of things with strat and there's a court case court case. Someone people were catching on that like she has a tattoo at the end. Did you see that? She has a tattoo on her neck that basically means that like she's been let out of prison like something with her being on parole I can't remember and I didn't pay attention to that detail so I'm curious to like see it again. I didn't know alluding that like if anyone caught that detail you would know that like she was put in prison probably for what she did. Yeah for what she did. I don't know I didn't catch on to that but I remember because yeah I think it was my sister-in-law said something about why they didn't say anything about her criminal record or like them going to court and I was like what did they go to court about like I didn't remember that until someone brought that up but I can see why the movie was already so long so once again going back to the heart of the story it's Rocky and Rylan so they have to cut something and so of course they're gonna cut that portion of Strat's backstory um one other difference that I want to mention really quick is the whole scene when Rocky saves Rylan and then Rylan takes Rocky back to a ship yes no I'm trying to remember or he he he tries to clean Rocky off and that actually almost killed him third degree burns all over his body and then he tries to clean Rocky off and then when Rocky wakes up he's like that almost killed me that was like saving me. Do you guys remember that so honestly yeah there's gonna be differences but once again it was like a three hour movie enough to like for me to really care. So I also like the added character of Carl he was fun. It was great. Well they were saying there's actually Carl was combined into one because there was two characters there was like a Russian um Dmitri I don't know someone put Dmitri in the Google form. I think so I do think in the book you get a lot more backstory with the other two astronauts. Yeah yeah Dmitri and then there was someone else and I think they mesh him into Carl I think they just meshed him into Carl. Yeah I think they also make Carl a little more fun yeah I'm gonna need you to sit down Carl we're fathers it was good I think they were very intentional about the things that they wanted to make it entertaining too like not that the book wasn't entertaining but there's things that you have to add in order to make a movie entertaining right and so I think they they were intentional and I think Rocky being a little dumber adds a humor. For sure he kind of overall I just loved I mean you don't see I'm like when's the last time I saw a space movie that was that intense that made me laugh that much that wasn't like Guardians the galaxy you know what I mean? Like made you cry but like high stakes that feels more real I don't know um very well done very well done I really like the first time I left the movie I was like no notes no notes. And truly like there's nothing I would truly be like this has to change. I think they did a very phenomenal job with it. I think you can just tell that everyone who was involved in the project felt really passionately about it. The way that even Ryan will do press when he was doing press for this movie the way he would speak about because he was a producer right the way he would speak about just how he wanted a movie for his kids like he wanted a movie for everybody to be able to go to and just how passionately you can tell everybody felt about this production it shows and also just the behind the scenes I it's been all over my TikTok just the behind the scenes of how they were able to film these scenes is absolutely mind blowing. The fact that they didn't use blue blue screens green screens is and the fact that they decided to use a puppet instead of a CGI just speaks volumes of how much everybody cared about this. Like I know you guys have seen this and I'm sure you listening have seen this photo of how they filmed the scene in the Petrova line I didn't even know that was possible just they could have easily just used green screens but they decided to make it so visually beautiful without CGI and green screens and as an audience member it makes me love the movie that much more. I was geeking out overall it's the things with the directors I'm like I need a full like director's cut of the movie I also like or a full uncut version of the movie I also need like a whole movie with commentary director's commentary like I want all of it because it's so fascinating to me my entire TikTok gosh is Project Hill it's thirst traps for freaking Ryland Grace gives it to me I left the movie and the first time I saw it and I it just consumed my thoughts for the next like three days. I can't wait to see I've seen it twice and I'm just like I can't wait to see it again. You know when you're really into a book and the last thing you want to do is stop and make food that's been us a time or two. Which let's okay this this might be kind of a fun question. Is the book in your top 10 books of all time? No it's not it's probably not in mine. I don't know because I think of like a bunch of books I rated five stars that I'd almost I don't know I don't think so I mean if I didn't include middle books in a series I don't know is the movie in your top ten movies of all time yeah same it is in mine. So it's just yeah it's just really interesting. So yeah yeah I just think I don't know it's just good it's just good I cried sobbed like a baby no surprise there I felt I was I was surprised I was surprised though because I don't know why I wasn't expecting to turn to Mikael at the end of the movie and she turns to us and she's just got these tears just streaming down her face to the the little the little Rockys the little kids got to me and I just just got to me just got to me and at the end when Rocky's like uh he's saying the the scientists are ready to ship you home and he's like can I think about it and he's like yes take a lot of time and I was like and then the little kids I I I was I was done for. I was done for just him teaching the little kids I was like this is what I was like so excited for that scene like scene specifically like I remember like when the movie started I was like oh my gosh I am so excited for that like closing scene to see what they do with it but then as it was getting closer I was like no like I can't it can't end it can't end I don't want to I didn't even want to see it at towards the end because I was just like that means it's over yeah very well done if every book adaptation could just be done that well if people would feel that much that passionately about it I think this is gonna be a huge eye opener for some of these companies because it's book adaptation it's also MGM Amazon MGM's highest grossing movie ever. Honestly I think it is because we're so I think as just people we're tired of heavily CGI we're tired of unoriginal stories we're tired of reboots we want and also the source material that they had is insane. Like all these authors who come up with all of these stories the source material is there. They just have to adapt it to the screen yeah and it already had I don't want to say a cult following but it already has all these books already have an audience. Yeah. People are reading it. So you're already guaranteed to make some sort of sale yeah but here's my one worry and I'm gonna ask you guys this question and I think I know how you guys I know how you guys feel about it. Um there's been rumor there's been talk of a sequel no Andy Ware did say that he I could be making this up maybe I dreamt this but I swear I saw an interviewer he said that he ended it the way that he did just in case he wanted to do a sequel I could be making that up so maybe fact check me on that he said yeah you're right he said that like because someone asked like why don't we know why they died like the the astronauts and he said I know why that's right I'm just keeping that material in case of a sequel. Yeah which to me I'm like why because they literally just died because they couldn't like what would what story would that be? Am I dumb? I don't know I don't know he's a lot smarter than me so he has a reason. Because yeah I am team no sequel I am too I mean why it's perfect. Yeah like why try to do anything more with some like what would would it follow the I don't know how it would follow the other two astronauts. I also don't know how it would follow Ryland because the movie makes it sound like he's made his peace he's gonna stay there. Yeah what would you what more would we need from him? I don't know or it's like here's the earth maybe it's a story of how the earth moves on post I don't know. But it's like I like that I don't know. I like that it's just in my mind Earth is happy and healthy. He saved the he saved the earth yeah in my mind. Well and also in the book i uh doesn't Rocky tell Ryland that he can see the temperature of the earth is going back up yeah he said that it the earth is like at its optimal I don't know which is fine I feel like I mean you get the he with straw instead. Yeah yeah um I don't know I just maybe I'll eat my words but like why fix like why add to something that's already like perfect and it could potentially ruin it. It's probably just I don't almost think it'd be for money but that's here's the thing that's why movies have not done well is because they're doing it all for cash grabs and they're just doing it because they think it's gonna make a lot of money. Yeah. So I I love Andy Weir. I think I mean I haven't read so I I read The Martian and then obviously Project Hail Mary he has another one called Artemis. It's about a female astronaut everybody's like it's only time it's taking time mom they're gonna announce the adaptation for that because I'm pretty sure the Martian did pretty well as well I know a few people that have read Artemis and it's not nearly as good as from what I've heard as The Martian and Proto Helm. Yeah I've heard that as well but I think he's produced his source materials produced two bangers. I think it's just a matter of time and also a female astronaut yeah brother in law was saying a movie of Artemis would be way better than the book. So that's just one person though but I do want to read that soon but if it's getting announced maybe I'll wait yeah and once it gets announced then I'll read it. Yeah. I think I actually physically own the book but one day one day I'll get to it it's just if you've read it let us know what you think um we also asked you guys how you felt about Ryan Gosling if if there's anybody else you guys could have pictured. Did you guys look at the responses? Because there's only there's two people that some that people have look at the response. Okay. Everybody said he's perfect he's perfect he's perfect. He was perfect. He was perfect like literally nobody could have I hate to be this person but I genuinely do not know if I would have have enjoyed the movie as much if it was anybody else but him I know his charisma he just I love Ryan Gosling. Here are the two people you guys said could be could have been cast as Ryland Grace other than Ryan Gosling I need to get my Google ready. Okay one of them I know you guys are gonna know the name I gotta find the other one Eddie Redmane I don't know who that is will you guys Google that for me Eddie what? He's in La Miz he's in red main no oh absolutely no I mean he has like the nerdy look to him and he's a great oh isn't he Fantastic Beasts? Yeah he's a great actor but like he doesn't have the charm and charisma that Ryan Gosling has that would carry the story and make the story what it is. You guys ready for the other one? Yeah don't tell me okay okay I'm gonna say it and then I'll let you guys say your piece and then I'll say my piece. Jason Siegel no I can't take like Jason Siegel's great actor I wouldn't don't think I'd be able to take him as seriously hear me out though I actually don't hate that really have you watched shrinking yes I don't hate that I really don't I think he could have not as well as Ryan Gossling I think it would have been fine. My issue with that is that man is huge. Imagine that man on a spaceship like that guy is a large man. Yeah I've never seen I feel like Jason Siegel just also feels a little too old but like I can see I can see why he could have done it he could have he he could he could have but like let's be honest Ryan Gosling was truly the perfect casting on planet earth my favorite thing was when someone asked Andy Ware did you ever picture Ryland Grace being as beautiful as Ryan Gosling we said absolutely not like I'm not saying that he got this he made the movie as good as it was because he was hot and that's not what it's about but like hotness aside he was phenomenal but like there's just something about him being good looking that just makes the movie that much better. It's just Ryan Gosling. I just don't believe that he was single no are you kidding my favorite thing was someone someone was saying that something about how Ryan kept wearing his glasses off his head like that and how could he really think people who wear glasses wear them like that. I loved it. It's just quirky I thought it was funny I don't know I didn't have anything against it. Every single decision Ryan Gosling made I worship the feet I worship at your feet honestly okay have you guys there's so many things I've been seeing so I'm just gonna like rapid fire a few random things that I've just like loved about the details of this movie. There was a scene where he's like dancing with a mop. Yeah that was not like scripted or anything. Like he says that they just filmed that because he was feeling lonely on set and so they made him like a little someone made him like a little mop thing and he was like dancing with it because he was like feeling lonely and they like put that in the movie or the details of how Rocky's voice came to be insane. Like I I tell everyone I know about that like they're like oh yeah Project Homer's so good I'm like do you know how that came to be in case you didn't know the puppeteer was not supposed to be the voice actor for Rocky and they ended up using him. They're like we're gonna use because and how they work together in the movie and their chemistry and how he knew Rocky so well that like they used his voice I can't like I can't get over that I do think a fun detail would have been if the guy who boasts the voice who did the book did Rocky's voice. That could have been Apparently he's his his voice is featured in it when they're going through oh really but I didn't watch that I feel like I would have caught that so maybe he did maybe like an accent yeah maybe he did something to Oh I love that. But I think it would have because to me it wasn't obvious but be like oh yeah he's in there. Anyways there's just so many little details that I love like he wasn't good planning on wearing glasses but his daughter told him you look really smart wearing glasses it's like I need to have glasses. Or when he would like his daughters would be in his ear yes or how they would do like not that they would play pranks on each other but they would say things in Ryan Gosling's ear to see how he would react and so I saw a TikTok about it and someone commented so is an ep so this whole movie was an episode of Impractical Jokers. Like I just think going I already said this five times but I just think that the passion that everybody who was involved on this movie had really made it what it is. Um obviously starting with Andy Ware and his passion for like this book and him being heavily involved I just think if every book adaptation could be like this I would be happy girl. And stuff like this mm just really reaffirms my stance on that more books need to be adapted. Everyone on this movie set the bar very high future book adaptation. So well done I thank you and they did it at the perfect time too to be able to have had Ryan Gosling to have had I don't know there's just something about the story in the time I don't know. I just amaze jazz hands all around amaze amaze amaze amaze fist my bump fist my bump is there anything else we need to talk about I don't think so yeah okay anyways we hope you enjoyed hearing our thoughts on Project Hell Mary this has Been like a long we knew once this movie was announced, we knew we were gonna be doing a podcast episode about it. So the fact that we've are closing it now just feels kind of crazy to me because that announcement seemed so long ago. It does. Uh so really looking forward to see what adaptations come next.
