Why You're Stuck Even When You're Motivated — Kam Knight on Internal Resistance
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You have the motivation. You know what you want. So why aren't you doing it?
In this episode, Heather sits down with Kam Knight — researcher, author, and expert in the psychology of the mind — to explore one of the most misunderstood forces in personal growth: internal resistance.
Internal resistance isn't laziness. It isn't a lack of motivation. It's a specific psychological barrier that operates independently from the part of your brain that generates desire — and understanding it changes everything.
In this conversation, Kam and Heather discuss:
• What internal resistance actually is — and why it's not what most people think
• The 'wanting mechanism' and how unlimited desires create paralysis
• Why 'high wants' (big, ambitious goals) can generate more resistance than smaller ones
• How limiting beliefs, habits, and comfort zones all contribute to resistance
• The role of purpose and alignment — and why misalignment with your higher calling makes resistance worse
• Why generic solutions don't work and what a personalized approach actually looks like
• Kam's Kam 9 method for uncovering and addressing your unique resistance patterns
• Why success is built from accumulating insights over time — not finding one magic answer
Whether you approach personal growth through psychology, spirituality, or both — this conversation will give you language for something you've probably been feeling but couldn't name.

Tonight we have a special guest. His name is Cam. Cam, how are you doing today?
SPEAKER_01I am doing fantastic. Thank you for having me on. How are you?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm doing great. Um, it's this wonderful Washington winter weather that we're having here. I'm just loving it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm not in um, I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but I'm not enjoying the cold either. So I think we're in the same boat.
SPEAKER_00I'm a beach girl at heart, so I don't necessarily enjoy the cold.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for me, anything below 75 is cold and uncomfortable. So I would much prefer the heat and what we have going on right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So why don't you go ahead and tell us a little bit about what you do and give us some of your story?
SPEAKER_01Sure. So my name is Kim Knight. I'm a mentor, international speaker, and author of a dozen books in the area of mental, physical, and emotional performance. I now talk about a concept called internal resistance, which answers the question I had my whole life. And that is, why is it if I want to do something, I know what to do, I know how to do it, and I have the motivation and desire to do it, but for one reason or another, I can or don't do it. And how I came to this topic or why I talk about this topic is growing up when I first moved to the US at a young age, I had parents and had high expectations of me, as well as zero support. At the same time, because of the lack of support, I when I moved to the U.S., it was a culture shock. It was really a shock to my brain because where I come from, it's so starkly different. And in many ways, I watched television to really understand what was going on. And unfortunately, I grew up on television, and the conclusion that my mind made was that it was all about the external, that to have any sort of self-worth or for people to like and respect me, I would need to have a nice car, big house, a lot in my bank account, as well as a prestigious job. So the two combined created the strong drive and desire for me to be more successful. And as a result, I wanted to get into an Ivy League school in high school when I was in high school. And although I got into a decent college, I ended up using the backdoor method where a person applies to an easy to get into major, and then once they get in, they transfer into the major that they really wanted. And in college, I wanted to work hard and get graduate and work for a top five accounting firm. And although I got a good job, I didn't get into a top five accounting firm. And in many ways, this was my pattern. I wanted to do more, have more, and be more in life. And although I had a decent amount of success, it wasn't what I really was shooting for, or there were a lot of things that I wanted to do, like get fit, work out, develop various skills. And either I didn't start, I would start or stop, or I wouldn't make meaningful progress. And again, I had that question that lingered in my mind, which is why is it if I want to do this, I have the motivation and I can't. And over time, I read a lot of books, attended a lot of seminars, and did various coaching. And at a certain point in my journey, I had an aha moment, which was, oh my gosh, there's a part of our brain designed to hold us back. There's a part of our mind built to keep us from growing and making progress. And I call this part resistance. And it's this brick wall that we hit whenever we want to do something, but we can't, no matter how much we want to do it.
SPEAKER_00Wow. That's really insightful. What do you what do you think? And pardon me if I'm interrupting, but um, what do you think causes this brick wall? Like how how do we form them?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So to understand resistance, it really helps to understand that the part of the brain that creates wants and desires, it works separately from the part that actually allows us to act on the desire. And this is really important. So I'll say it one more time. The part of the brain that actually creates the motivation and inspiration to go out and do things works independent of the part that actually gives a green light to be able to do them. So we have one part of the brain that's creating wants, and in many ways, it's not designed or built to check if that want is worth doing, if it's going to be fulfilling, or even safe. It simply creates wants. And you can think of the this part of the brain, which I call the wanting mechanism, like a kid in a candy store. It wants all of these things. And then we have another part of the brain that checks to see if that want is if that want is safe, worth doing, fulfilling, and so on. And this part of the brain is like the parent that's trying to keep the kid in check. So yeah, so there's a couple important things to understand about this dynamic. One, it is possible for one brain to both create a want for something and at the same time hold us back from it. So I know many people have experienced that feeling of wanting this thing, but then not being able to go after it or really wanting to move forward, but at the same time being held back. And this dynamic kind of explains what's going on. And so to go a little bit deeper, the second part of what's important is anytime we do have a want or desire, that want gets filtered by this other part of the brain, which I call resistance. And it gets filtered or analyzed using a whole host of criteria. And so a great way to think about this is to stand before a panel of judges, this is to think about standing before a panel of judges or board of directors. So every decision or course of action that comes up, it get it gets presented by the panel of judges and board of directors. And if even one member is against the idea, it will not pass. And what I like to help people understand is that it doesn't matter how much motivation you have, how simple the solution is, or even how much benefit will derive from the given desire. If this part of the brain, which I call resistance, prevents action, we can't act. And so what's more is that what's interesting is both our want and resistance can get in our own way. And so I hope uh this kind of uh gives a better intro of why we procrastinate or sabotage, or what helps us, or what actually keeps us from moving forward.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And I think that this is a problem that is really common among many people. I know I've been there myself, so this is this is really interesting to hear your perspective.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is, it's very common, and oftentimes I do get asked, does everyone have resistance, or does everyone have the same resistance, or does the resistance go away? And more or less, yes, we all have resistance because we need this part of the brain as a parent to keep a lot of our desires in check. Because when we think about a kid, a kid wants to do everything, they want to put their hand on the stove, they want to put dirt in their mouth, and things of that nature. And that's really the inherent nature of how our wanting mechanism works. And then the resistance part, it helps to have that part to analyze all of our different wants to make sure what we're doing is going to be healthy and fulfilling for us. Unfortunately, resistance can go overboard and hold us back from more than just the things that are gonna be unsafe. And then as far as does every you know, is this something that is always there? In many respects, it is. So anytime we are doing something new or growing or doing something that we haven't done before, resistance will come up. And a person can experience different levels of resistance to different things. So I didn't go into the details of what the criteria are, but one of the criteria the brain evaluates has to do with people. Meaning the more sensitive a person is to the thoughts, judgments, actions, and reactions of others, the more resistance will come up anytime we go out to do something. So personally, I had that as a challenge when growing up. Like I said, I didn't really have a lot of support growing up, and so I didn't receive a lot of encouragement. And as a result, my brain became a lot more kind of more or less sensitive to other people, meaning if people didn't accept me or I got rejected, it was painful. And growing up, that kind of stayed with me. So a lot of times when I wanted to do certain things, my brain prevented me because out of hesitation that, hey, if things don't go well and people don't like your work or perceive it well, it's gonna be painful. So instead of doing this thing and potentially experiencing pain, I'm just gonna create resistance now. So you have a hard time moving forward towards that thing.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I've I've had a similar situation with with love and relationships because I'll be honest, neither one of my parents were the greatest examples of what a relationship was supposed to look like. So I similarly to how you perceived um what was important in life, I looked at TV and movies and it creates such high expectations that it's almost impossible to reach them. And and I mean, as I've gotten older, I've learned that it's more about the internal, you know, self-love and worthiness rather than looking for it outside of yourself. But but when you're trying to find fulfillment like that, especially when you have TV and movies to rely upon for example, it's really difficult because they fantasize everything. And it's yeah, that's I I empathize with you there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, it is a challenge because media can be helpful in certain ways, but in a lot of ways, it is having a negative impact on us because what I tell people is movies and stories make for great like positive feelings, but it isn't what how the real world works. Right. It's not realistic at all. It's not realistic on a lot of levels, not just in re person like romantic relationships, but in a lot of even personal relationships or even work or professional relationship. And I remember watching shows and the way people would interact with each other, that's just not the way how we interact with people in the real world. And again, uh, when I am working with resistance with my clients regarding relationships, one of the things that comes up all the time is they're struggling because they're chasing a fantasy they saw in stories, Disney movies, as well as movies at large. And because they're not receiving what they saw in television or getting the results that they this fantasy that they created in their mind because of television and stories, they think that there's something wrong with them, or the world is working against them. When the reality is there's nothing wrong, it's just that they're chasing something that doesn't exist. Absolutely. Yeah. And so the people part and the media aspect is really just one part of resistance. And I would love to talk a little bit more about the criteria of brain evaluates. And as I mentioned, there's many criteria in my work, I found there's at least a couple dozen, if not more. And some of them are things that we've heard in personal development, like limiting beliefs or habits or comfort zones. Meaning, if a person doesn't believe something is possible, of course, resistance is gonna prevent them from doing that thing or going after it. But what's really interesting that doesn't get talked about is even though some a person might think something is possible, maybe they see a friend or co-worker do something and they feel like, oh yeah, I can do that too. But if deep down they don't believe it's possible for them, then resistance will show up. And what's challenging about a deep down limiting belief about themselves is that it's not apparent. Even though we could see it's possible, when we actually can start moving forward to to work on that thing, but that deep down feeling that it's not possible for us will silently slow our progress, keep us from moving forward, make the action more difficult than it needs to be, or worse, sabotage our efforts. So if we do reach it or are making progress, it'll try to pull us back. So that's one criteria, and others relate to habits. And how I help people understand how habits get in the way is that for anything to be comfortable or easy requires habit. Anytime we do something new, it's awkward and it's painful and it's difficult just because we haven't built the muscle for it. And the way the brain works is its goal is to have us avoid pain, whether that's physical pain, mental pain, or even emotional pain. And it doesn't reason or use logic to see if a certain pain will be useful or helpful, like a healing pain, or the pain required to grow, like developing habits. It's more or less an on-off switch where it's if there is pain or potential for it, block it. So when we do something new, which goes against our habits, since there's going to be pain, the brain is going, oh, there's pain, we need to stop it. And because it's this behavior that's causing it, then it causes us to stop the behavior or creates resistance in doing it. But it goes further, it can go into also comfort zone. The way I define comfort zone is it's a zone of knowing or familiar. And I don't really use the word comfort because a majority of our comfort zones aren't actually comfortable, they're annoying and painful, but we stay in them is because it's a place where we know what to do and how, and there isn't a lot of mental strain to learn something new and different. And so anytime we are wanting to do something, by the nature of doing it or making progress in it, it means we're gonna move out of our comfort zone. And because for some people they like the knowing much more than the growth, the brain will create resistance just so it could stay in the familiar. So these are some of the criteria the brain will evaluate. It's like, hey, there's a desire that comes up, and the brain goes, Oh, do we believe that is possible? Do we believe it's possible for us? Is this gonna go against our habits? Is this gonna move us out of our comfort zone into unfamiliar territory? And but it goes even deeper, it goes into concepts like authority issues, into things like demographics, even our sex plays a big role in resistance. So these are some criteria to help people understand how resistance works.
SPEAKER_00Wow. That's very insightful. And it's an interesting perspective on just kind of the way that you're labeling everything, because a lot of what I do as a spiritual coach and like an energy healer, we we do a lot of work trying to break through those barriers and those resistance, um those areas of resistance that you're talking about. And it's nice to hear all of them kind of put into together in this in this sort of way, because it's one thing to look at them individually and be like, all right, well, let's go back to the origins of this and let's heal this this limiting belief or this you know area of resistance, but to kind of wrap it all up in this nice little package that you have here is is really relatable. And I think that's amazing and very helpful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, thank you very much. It really helps us understand what is going on in a much simpler level. In fact, we humans are fairly simple. The expression of it is fairly complex of well, why can't I do this? And why am I struggling here? And what's going on with you know, self image and all of that. But when we really bring it down, it just comes on to we have a part of our brain that creates wants, and then that wants gets filtered by another part of the brain, which I call resistance. Resistance goes through a whole host of criteria. Criteria or checklists to see if we should do it. And if it decides based on one of the checklists not to let us do it, we can't move forward. So then we need to not only figure out what that reason or criteria is, but then how we can move forward. So yeah. But what's really important to understand Heather is that, as I mentioned in the start, that both our wants and resistance can get in the way. And the reason I say that is most people wouldn't think our wants to be a problem or one of the causes for why we have a challenge in moving forward in our life. But our wants create as many challenges as there are criteria for the reasons resistance holds us back. And to help you understand what I mean, as I mentioned, the part of our brain that creates wants, in many ways, it's unrestrained. So it's cranking out endless wants one after another. It sees a new pair of shoes and it wants it. We see something on television, it wants it as well. Someone attractive walks by, we want that person too. And our wanting mechanism creates so many wants in a single day that no one person could achieve in a lifetime. Even if we live multiple lives, we couldn't achieve, let alone enjoy, all of the wants that our brain is producing. So I'm hoping you can see the challenge because as soon as we start on one thing, our wanting mechanism creates other wants that pull us away. While we're making progress on another thing, our want might create a desire for something completely different. And if we skip from one want to the other, we don't actually make any progress.
SPEAKER_00It's total sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. But that's just one challenge of our wanting mechanism. There are other challenges our wants create. One of them is what I call a high want. This is where a person wants to be the next Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, or Mark Zuckerberg, and they're shooting for that right out of the gate. And it's too much of a change that the brain can't help but create resistance. And that's because anytime we want something or anytime the brain creates a desire, it doesn't check to see what that want or change will mean. The people we have to give up, the new people that we have to deal with, as well as the risks and challenges that come with it. All we for us, it's we see that we see something and we want it, and we just want that end result. But resistance does analyze those things. And if there's too much of a gap between where you are to where you want to go, resistance will come up. So even though we can do the thing, or it is possible, and even though there's really no other inner stuff going on that's preventing us, like our beliefs or comfort zones or habits, just the fact that we're going after something is so farther, there's too much of a gap from where we are to where we want to go, can be enough for resistance to show up. So a lot of times it really helps us start with the wants and work with the wants itself.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense. And I've also found that, you know, because we go through so many different wants and desires, and they change as you grow and as you, you know, develop different perspectives about life and and your purpose, that the if your your wants and desires are not aligned with your higher calling, that resistance is going to be even stronger. Even if you are doing all the right things, that resistance is still going to be there because that's not part of what you're here for. So when you choose those wants and desires based off that alignment and what feels correct in your heart, that that helps kind of break down some of that resistance and things flow a little bit easier as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 100%. Because if we don't have the word you said alignment or higher calling, they show up in many ways. People will call it purpose or things of that nature. If we don't have like a clear direction of what we want to go, then our wanting mechanism was just kind of create wants for all sorts of things and have and pull us in all sorts of directions. But when we can become a little bit more focused or have a much more clear purpose or much more aligned purpose, or as you had said, something that is a higher calling, then the wanting mechanism doesn't show up as much or as severely or tries to pull you out with all these other things you could be doing. Because there is something that is more clear and that is grounding and centering us. And in fact, when you look at a lot of the psychology and studies, they really show how important a per purpose is for a person's life. Usually, whether it's in business or personal life, the people who are doing extremely well or excelling, excelling, and moving the needle forward all have some sort of purpose that's driving them. The people who aren't doing as well or wish they could be doing more, or they're not making progress, or progress is slower than they would like, is usually because they don't have a clear vision or purpose. And that comes down to well, and because they don't, it's their wanting mechanism in a way, it's kind of going in all of sorts of directions, pulling them in all sorts of places that is making it challenging to not only stick with one thing, but to move forward in any one of those things.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, 100%. Yeah. So in your in your work, do you kind of help your clients work through these areas of resistance, or do you just kind of provide the information to allow them to understand what's going on?
SPEAKER_01Both. If I just provided information so they can understand why they're stopped, it doesn't necessarily help them, although it does help them make them feel better. And the reason I say it helps them make feel better is because when resistance stops us, it doesn't tell us that it's stopping us. It doesn't say, hey Heather, you know that thing that you're trying to do? Well, we don't feel deserving of it, so I can't let you do it. Or that other goal that you have of yours, well, we it's not aligned with our habit, so we're just gonna stand here and do nothing. That's not what happens. Resistance shows up without us telling us that it's showing up, and because it doesn't tell us, oftentimes the natural assumption that we make is because we're not good enough, we don't have what it takes, there's something wrong with us, or that we're broken. And I want people to understand it's not that, but instead, there's a part of their own mind that is designed to hold them back, and it's actively working to hold them back. And it's not a concept they've likely hurt, so they wouldn't actually come up with it. So it does help to be aware of what's going on, and then two, I do help people one, get insights into what their resistance are, as well as move past it. And the way I do that is I have developed a process, a method, I actually call it the Camnet method, which breaks a barrier between our conscious and unconscious mind, and I take them into their unconscious so they could see what their resistance is, essentially how it formed, and work through to release it. And the reason I talk about this barrier is because the majority of our thoughts in our head, as well as the decisions and actions we're making, isn't us thinking those thoughts or making those decisions. It's actually run by our unconscious, and it has to do with all the activity that's going on in our unconscious mind. Unfortunately, there is no direct way to access our unconscious mind, which is why it's called the unconscious. And I did find a way to, what's the word, disengage this barrier so we can go deeper. And what's so great about this method is because we work on a person's specific issues, their own unique resistances, as well as the events from their past that led to it. One of the challenges I had in my work, especially in my personal work, is people were always telling me what my problem was and what I needed to do to solve it. And I would listen to them and apply it, and it either didn't work or it wasn't as effective. And I got fed up and I thought, if my challenges are in my head, why don't I just go there for the answers? And that was one of the reasons or motivations for developing the method that I have, because I don't do what I tell people is I don't do coaching or advice giving. Because each person is unique and it really helps to identify and work on that person's unique resistance. Otherwise, we've all had experiences where we have applied cookie-cutter tips and solutions, and for some people it works, and for some people it doesn't. The reason it works for some people is that that particular tip or solution was addressing that specific person's specific resistance. The reason it didn't work for the other person is because it either one didn't address their specific resistance that was holding them back, or two, if it did work on their specific resistance, they likely had other criteria of resistance at play. So it required digging a little bit deeper.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, everybody's journey is different, and we've all been through different experiences, different um environments, different, you know, growing up, uh the way we grew up was different, and that all affects, you know, your limiting beliefs and and these different areas of resistance. So I'm there is no one size fits all answer, and it is going to be unique to each person.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Unfortunately, a lot of people are looking for the cookie, is what I say, quote unquote, the cookie as that quick fix where if I do this one, all my blocks will magically go away forever. And unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. And this is kind of the message I want people to understand. There's more to it than scrolling through Instagram and hearing this inspirational speech or quote, and thinking, now that my body's flight with all this inspiring forward thinking thoughts, that that's going to be enough to move forward. And it's not. Usually, once those positive feelings wear off, we're just as stuck as before. And then when we do, yeah, when we do start to do the inner work, and you know, we'll work on maybe the surface level resistance we have or the higher level resistance that are showing up, and think that will be enough. And when it doesn't give us the result that we want, or at that level, it's easy to feel a little disheartened. But it's really important to know that for some people we just have more resistance, and to really help people understand is we all know someone who can think about doing something and then do it. It almost seems like what how they're moving through life is magical. Yeah. And it seems like they have something special or some special ability that helps them do it. And what I want people to understand is not what they have, it's what they don't. They likely have considerably less resistance than we do or the other person. And because they have less resistance, anytime they do want to go do something, their mind isn't filtering through all these criteria that's holding them back. So it's much easier for them to do it. Unfortunately, other people have more resistance that they have to work through. And even though they want something just as much as the first guy, it may not be as easy for them to go after it as the first guy, because they have more letters to work through. And it's just the unfortunate nature of how things are. Some people, the way their upbringing is, or or just a combination of events in their life, led to less resistance, whereas other people, due to their unfortunate circumstances, they had more, and it creates a little bit more challenges when it is time to do something that they want.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And I try to tell people that all the time. Like society, social media, TV, movies, whatever, they all like emphasize this possibility of oh, let's take this pill and all our problems are, you know, magically fixed overnight, or this one size fits all kind of solution to fix all of your problems and make your whole life even better. And I'm like, okay, I understand how enticing that sounds. It would be wonderful if that were the case, but there is work involved. If you want to be that higher, better version of yourself and you want that success, whatever way that looks, like you have to do the inner work and you have to work through these barriers that are that are holding you back. And to be to be honest, you are the only one holding yourself back. But there's reasons for it and there's things that you have to kind of dig deeper for it to work through. It's going to be messy, it's not going to be comfortable. But if you want to reach that greater potential that you have, that each of us has, it's worth exploring and it's worth digging and it's worth giving yourself the space and loving yourself enough to do the work to become this, you know, great, great version of yourself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So there's a lot to unpack with what you said, and I agree wholeheartedly. First, is there is a lot of messaging saying that things should be easier, results come quickly. And unfortunately, there will be some people who will always chase that. Even though they've seen that it never worked, they're always gonna chase the next get rich quick scheme or the next lose 60 pounds and 30 days type of thing. And because of such people, there will always be marketers and advertisers who carry that message to such people. And because they're they're that messaging is around, it's easy for others to come to the conclusion that it should be easier, that it should only take 30 days to get massive results, or that I should have been rich with a little bit of effort. And they're expecting that when they go out searching for results as well. When the reality is, is the human brain and body are extremely complex, and there's a lot of things going on internally that allow us to do what it is we want to do, and more importantly, keep us from doing what we want to do. And for some people, like I said, because they have more resistance, it's gonna take a little bit more effort and than the other guy to do it. And this is why I really like to stress just because you're not able to do something, especially as quickly as someone else, doesn't mean that you're lazy, that you lack motivation, or you don't have discipline, or there's that there's something wrong. It's just that there's likely more resistance to work through. Now it can be disheartening when we see somebody getting results quickly and us having to struggle. But there are two advantages of having the resistance. One is for the people where things come too easily, they don't actually or they're not actually able to enjoy or appreciate it as much.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Which is why they often have to go after the next thing and the next thing. And so although it seems like they're able to achieve a lot of things, because it comes easily, that level of appreciation isn't there. And so for them, there could be more emptiness than you might expect, and oftentimes there is. But and then also when we do work on the deeper stuff, and as annoying and as painful as it is, there is a depth or a fulfillment that comes from accessing these deeper resistance to understanding and learning it and working through it. It's not the same positive feelings that come that we that would come from you know having that nice car, big house, but it it still gets some reward that's not accessible any other way. Right. And this is where that depth and more fulfillment that people gain, that's that the guy who has little resistance can't ever really achieve with all his external accolades, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_00It does. And the the great paradox about this is people want things to happen easily and effortlessly. Well, guess what? It is possible once you do the inner work and you break through those resistances and you heal the things that need to be healed, and you take a look at who you are and what you want and get that purpose and that direction, things can happen easily and effortlessly. And when you go through the work and you get to experience that journey and become more self-aware and more, you know, in tune with who you really are and what you're capable of and the potential that you have, it adds so much greater value when you receive those things that you want and those desires and those goals and you know that promotion, whatever it may be. Um, when you go through this really fulfilling, freeing and uplifting and very empowering process of working on yourself, investing in yourself, um, it really does add that so much more value and makes you appreciate the things that you get so much more than than that, you know, person who just everything comes to them easily.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, like you said, it's much more uplifting when, and but there again, there's also another downside to it. And I want people to understand how to overcome that. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people selling snake oil. So it's not that the person doesn't want to do the work, it's just that a lot of information out there isn't good, it doesn't go deep, there isn't a lot of real intention in helping their client, but just to sell. And it's easy to kind of get defeated by that. Yeah. It's like, oh, you know, I did the work, I was told this is what I needed to do, I did it, I didn't get that result. And I want to add that that's also the layer of the journey because there is a part of our mind that's designed to hold us back, and it may Going after things more difficult than it needs to be. And it could be disheartening to have that, but when we push through it, it makes the things that we do achieve much more fulfilling. And then there's also the part, well, even though we go after things, a lot of the information we initially received isn't gonna work, and that's disheartening. And again, when we continue to persevere and find the stuff that finally does work, or we find the people that we do resonate with and get the results, it will be equally uplifting and fulfilling. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's why I try to tell people, you know, there's so much information out there. There's so many co and and there's a lot of coaches who have put, you know, a nasty taste in people's mouth because of that. Um, and I'm like, okay, instead of looking for the easiest solution, because it's usually not the the one that's going to work in the way or the deep um way that you want it to, instead of looking for the easy solution, really use your discernment and figure out what feels right in your heart, what resonates with you, because there's so many good solutions out there, but also just as equally there are a lot of bad solutions. I and I use good and bad because I don't really have a better frame of reference for people to understand. But but listen, listen to your heart, what resonates with you. Use your discernment and do the research and figure out what it is that that really speaks to you. You know what I mean? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I I know where you're coming from, and you don't want to use the word good and bad because things aren't inherently good and bad, but we can instead say what works or doesn't work for them. Right. And oftentimes we'll have to go through things that don't necessarily work for them to find the thing that ultimately does. And that's also part of the journey. And the more we continue to stay in the journey, when we do finally get it, the more fulfilling it'll be, regardless of how big or grand it's perceived by society or you know, people through scrolling through social media.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01If I could actually go ahead. No, go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I was just gonna say that um even when you do find those, you know, make those little missteps, if you will, about finding something that may not work, the the information that you did learn might be a little nugget of information that does put you in the right direction. And it could also be just, you know, part of this beautiful journey where this is just another opportunity to learn a lesson, to use your discernment or to listen to your intuition or whatever it may be. It could be a myriad of things. But each step, regardless of what it looks like, is part of that beautiful process and that beautiful journey of getting to the place where you find the right solution and you you get to experience that um that inner work, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01A hundred percent. In fact, I'm glad you brought this up because I haven't had a lot of opportunities on going on these podcasts to express it, but something that I'm coming to recently, and it's from my journey, is that you know, I did a lot of programs, I read a lot of books, I did a lot of coaching, I went to a lot of seminars, and although the main ideas they were teaching didn't necessarily help, in all of that, there were all these little nuggets that I picked up that were really key, that were that were more helpful than the main idea I wanted to get. So, yeah, we might sign up to a course or pick up a book or attend a seminar to get a certain concept or idea, and it might not really help us, but in receiving that coaching or advice, there was a nugget that was picked up that was really helpful. And yeah, life isn't about one key thing, and I want to talk really about this because this is really important of why resistance comes up. So I mentioned when resistance comes up, it doesn't tell us that it's coming up or give us a reason why the brain is stopping us, it actually shows up in very deceptive and manipulative ways, meaning our brain will put us in creative avoidance where we're creatively finding ways to avoid doing the thing, such as over planning or perfectionism and things of that nature. But another way is our brain will have us like wait for that nugget of gold or that perfect advice that'll change everything. I don't know if you've experienced that with your clients, but I have where a person doesn't want to start something because they're still doing all this personal development work or reading books, because they're waiting for that one piece of advice that will change everything. And it's a trick because as long as they're waiting for that one piece of advice, we're not taking action. And as long as we're not taking action, the tricks of resistance win. And the reason I'm bringing this up is I want people to understand success isn't about this one perfect piece of advice or this one key thing that makes us able to move forward. It's actually about these series of golden nuggets that receive, and it's when we receive it and that kind of come together that helps us move forward. In fact, I oftentimes when you hear someone say, Oh, you know, this one piece of advice really changed things for me, or it was a key thing that helped me remove my blocks, or really take it to the next level. The reason it was that one key thing is more than likely they already had all the other pieces in place. And it was this one piece of information that was creating a block for them. And once they you know fill that piece, things began to magically improve. Yeah, for other people, that same piece of advice is likely not gonna create the same outcome because they likely don't have the other pieces or the other nuggets, if you will, in place to have that. So it's never about one idea, but as you mentioned, all these little nuggets that come together that really leads to the outcome we're seeking.
SPEAKER_00Right. And when you're waiting for that one piece of advice, now not only have you placed certain expectations on your journey, your process, your growth, which limits, you know, what can happen and the possibilities, which are truly endless, you're you're completely missing or ignoring all of those little nuggets that you could be finding. And even for me, like all of the certificates and the education and the college and the courses and all the things, like finding one modality is not typically the answer because, again, all of us have very different journeys, we have different paths, we have different purposes. They're not all supposed to look the same. So even with taking all of these courses and everything, I've been able to take what resonated from each one to kind of build my own empire and build my own way of doing things. But in order to create that bigger picture, I needed those little nuggets from each of those steps of the journey. You know what I mean? To make it this beautiful, unique thing that works for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a hundred percent. And to reiterate what I'm hearing, it's even though we took all these courses and programs and learned all these things that might not be helpful or useful to the thing that we're actually doing now, we needed all of that to really understand what it is we're doing now at the level where it could be either effective for ourselves or for the people we're trying to help.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. No, no, that's really important. The nuggets piece is key because for a lot of my journal, you know, I would do all these things and then not get the result that I was hoping for, or not get the outcome that I was seeking when I signed up for the course or the program, it was still helpful in a lot of ways. And and I'm only seeing that very recently. Yeah. So if I'd seen it earlier, I think I would have created less frustration or regret.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's one of those things that's easier to see in hindsight. But if you truly learn to live in the present moment and and not have those expectations on what you want to get out of that course and leave yourself open to the opportunity for maybe something different or better than you can even imagine, it really lets you take the time to look at each of those nuggets and be like, oh yeah, maybe, maybe my expectations were, you know, close, but not quite there. And I've just discovered something that kind of shifts my perspective and and alters my direction a little bit. But man, this this is even better than what I what I was thinking. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01And oftentimes that is the case. It usually ends up being better, and we just want to be open to it and kind of getting hung up on the expectation can keep us from seeing it. And I'll actually share a pretty interesting story. Um, I've traveled to over 100 countries, and my travels were very instrumental in the content that I write about, as well as developing this concept of internal resistance. Though I do remember oftentimes in my travels, anytime I would arrive in a new city or country, I had an expectation of what I wanted to do and the experiences I wanted to have. And oftentimes I would force that expectation to the point I would miss everything else around me. You know, the locals I could be interacting, meeting and learning from, the out-of-the-bean path sites and restaurants that I could be seeing and experiencing that provided oftentimes as good or even better experiences than the expectations I came in with. And sometimes our expectations can really create a challenge in our growth because we're wanting this thing, but we're kind of forcing the outcome to the point where we're missing everything else around that we can take in and enjoy.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. I feel like when you place those expectations on any situation, you're kind of missing out on living life. Like you're missing out on so much other possibilities that because you're so focused and narrow-minded on that one thing, that you're missing out on so much more, you know? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I'm go ahead. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Um, I was just gonna say that we're we're just about out of time, and I don't want to miss out on you having the opportunity to uh share your um information so that if somebody would want to work with you to break through their resistances, they would be able to get in touch with you.
SPEAKER_01Okay, great. Well, thank you for that time. I want to say for anyone who has made it this far into our podcast, I've got three free gifts for them. The first one is prompt engineering for your mind. The human brain was original Chat GPT, and you can prompt it to not only give you answers and solutions, but to take action on those answers and solutions. And you can learn that in the first guide. The second guide is called Build Habits and Behaviors in Your Sleep. It's, you know, resistance is hard to push through, but if we can work to change things on the unconscious level, it makes it easier. And this guide will show a person how to do that. And the third guide is on more or less what we're talking about. It's a deeper, deeper dive into this topic of internal resistance, and it talks about other ways our wants can create challenges for us, other reasons or criteria for resistance, as well as other ways the tricks of resistance show up. And they can get all three of those guides from my website at camknight.com. And if anybody wants to do one-on-one work with me, as I mentioned, I developed a way to disengage our um that barrier between our conscious and unconscious mind to guide people into their unconscious to see not only what's going on in there that's creating their thinking and challenges, but also getting into the root of some of the resistance and releasing the resistance. And it's a much quicker and deeper way to overcome our blocks. And if a person is interested in that, they can email me at mentor at camknight.com.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Awesome. Thank you so much for being on the show today. It was a pleasure to speak with you and to hear your your beautiful insights about resistance and and how people can work through those. Thank you so much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, thank you very much. I was, like I said, really happy to be here. And I do love talking about this topic, and I hope um I find that you found it valuable as well as your audience.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Thank you. Thanks for hanging out with me today. If you're an empath or a highly sensitive person, if you feel everything and you've spent most of your life trying to manage that or diminish it instead of using it, I want you to know that's exactly who I built my work for. If you're feeling heavy, foggy, or like you're carrying something you can't name, an energy clearing session might be exactly what you need. It's one hour, and most people describe it as feeling lighter than they have felt in months. I'll put the link in the show notes. And if you want to go deeper into the full journey of understanding your energy body, your sensitivity, and how to actually work with it instead of against it, the self spirit method is my 14 step program that I built for exactly that. You can start for free inside the school community. The link is in the show notes. I'll catch you in the next episode. Until then, trust what you know.
