Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Axay Shah is the Kirkus starred author of In Nature We Trust and the founder of Raw Foodiest. At 67, he has completed eight marathons, takes zero medications, and has over two decades of documented medical records tracking his health since transitioning to a fully raw food lifestyle.
In this episode, Axay shares what led him to change his diet at 50, not out of illness, but a persistent lack of energy that doctors dismissed as normal aging. He talks through the gradual process of shifting to fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, the pushback he got from family along the way, and the bloodwork he has tracked for over 21 years to document the changes in his body.
Axay and Heather also talk about his views on fasting, why he believes radical lifestyle change has to happen in stages rather than all at once, and the marathon he once ran fueled by a single avocado.

It's time to expand, to awaken, and to rise together.
SPEAKER_01Let's begin.
SPEAKER_02Today's guest is Axe Shaw, the Kirkus-starred author of In Nature We Trust and the founder of Raw Foodiest. At 67 years old, he has completed eight marathons, takes zero medications, and has over two decades of documented medical records, tracking the changes in his own body since switching to a fully raw food lifestyle. Akte started the shift at 50, not because he was sick, but because he noticed that he no longer had the energy that he used to. What followed was years of experimentation, family skepticism, and a slow, deliberate transition toward eating only fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. He talks about what changed in his body along the way, including the blood work that tracks it, and how he thinks about energy as the real currency behind your health. We also get into his approach to fasting, why he believes radical change has to happen gradually, and the marathon he ran fueled by nothing but a single avocado.
SPEAKER_01Let's get into it. All right, guys, welcome back to another episode.
SPEAKER_02Today we have a special guest named Axe, and he is a Kirkus starred author of In Nature We Trust and the founder of Raw Foodious. At 67, he has eight marathons completed, which alone is phenomenal, zero medications, and 21 plus years of documented medical proof. He teaches how to restore your body's energy architecture through nature alignment and his energy system dysfunction framework. I'm super excited to hear about all of this stuff. I'm really happy to have you on today. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_00Fine. Thank you, Heather, for inviting. Yes, I'm doing fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Good. Awesome. So why don't you go ahead and get us started? Tell us a little bit more about who you are and what you do.
SPEAKER_00Well, my background, I'm not a doctor, I'm not a nutritionist. My background is I'm a businessman. Um and this plant-based raw food, I I got into it at age 50. And nothing wrong with my body. I was healthy. Only thing I noticed that I I didn't had enough energy. And so I was inquiring in that direction. Medical doctors didn't give me much help. They said, Oh, well, you know, 50, you're you're aging, so that is normal. And I said, Well, it's normal for you, but not for me. And I started doing more research in that direction. And and what I found, you know, I surrendered actually. I went to Mother Nature. And Mother Nature, I what I saw is the human is the only species on this planet is eating cooked food.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All other species is eating raw food. And all other species are very healthy. If they are not healthy, they are going to get eliminated right away. And so human is the only species suffering so much health-wise, globally. It's not east or west or this, that, nothing. Everywhere, this is the same situation. So I thought, let me try raw food. Like all other species eating raw and they are healthy. Let me try. And in the beginning, I had a you know kind of little hurdle. Not hurdle, but it is like a pushback. You know, my my elder sister, she says, Akshay, you cannot eat raw food. It is not good for human consumption. My my nephew, he was uh valedictorian and he got six, seven years of scholarship from uh high school, the when he uh you know graduated from high school. He sent me so many uh articles about the you know, scientific article that it eating raw food is not good for human consumption. And still I thought, let me try. Let me yeah, I understand there. And this they, my sister and my nephew, they gave me this information out of love and concern to me. But I said, I want to do it, and I started it uh within three, four weeks. I started feeling so good. I'm I started feeling a lot of energy, more, you know, better sleep. All the digestion system came into you know more, better, and even bowl movement, everything was getting better, better, better, and you know, I thought I don't want to now quit this. Let me continue. So that day, 2009 to December 6th, and I started it, and till today I'm I'm I continued. Wow.
SPEAKER_02So are you just eating fruits and vegetables, or what raw food are you eating?
SPEAKER_00So fruits, vegetable, nuts, and seed. Gotcha. This is all raw. And when I started, it was not I my goal was 100% raw, but in fact, I was not eating 100% raw. Because it's like in the beginning, I I was eating granola bar, which I thought it is it is a good healthy food, but it it it's not. It's it's uh yeah, but so I started like that, few couple of things, you know, I was it was not 100% raw. Then another thing was I was eating with my vegetable, I'm I'm I was taking pasta sauce. The those sauce is is also processed. So but I eliminated very quickly within a year, year and a half. And uh since then, you know, everything is likely uh 100% raw.
SPEAKER_02Wow. And even even with those things, you said you felt better after three or four weeks?
SPEAKER_00Four weeks, I I saw the you know very noticeable change. Not very too much. What I am today is not exactly that much, but you know, it it takes time. But noticeable change that you know what energy deficiency I was seeing in my body was getting going away, and I had better energy. It is not just uh the physical thing, it's also mental, the mental fog. The the whole in in my book, what I I wrote is is the all disease is because of lack of energy. Once people have enough energy, our body can heal itself. I see this way that you know all other species everywhere you know you see it, they are they are healthy, and their body also, let's say if any issue, it gets healed. My body also got healed. You know, I had tendonitis on my left shoulder four weeks four years back, and doctor wanted to do surgery or gave me the steroid. But I said, no, let me see you know what I can do. And within four, six months, it is gone 100%. Today now I can do even pull-ups and no no issue. So, what I'm trying to say is this body knows how to help. It requires a lot of energy, but if you don't have energy, then it's not going to work. So it it is like this. I see the energy is a currency, the money. So if you have enough money, you can do a lot of things. Everything you can do, whatever you want in real life. You can buy a nice house, nice car, nice shoes, nice clothes, everything. And you can go on vacation, do music. But if you don't have money, now everything is going to cut down. Now, life is not that joyful. So, same way, if you don't have enough energy, the body is not going to have all this thing, you know, what we need, the maintenance of all internal organs. And of course, you know, the external thing, you know, also our body needs to repair every day. Millions of cells are dying every day. We have to reproduce, we have to make sure it is all functioning well, and wherever is not functioning, or you get injured, or some let's say when I run, there is a lot of toll on my body, but then I have to recoup. That happens only and only if you have enough energy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So tell me a little bit more about before you started this and you were 50, and you go to the doctor, and you're like, I don't have any energy. Tell me more about what that period of time in your life was like. What made you because a lot of us are tired, we're fatigued, we work, you know, we feel tired, we everybody drinks coffee. So, what made that point in your life so impactful that you decided that you wanted to change and start doing all this?
SPEAKER_00So at age 50, I was eating like a pig. Literally, you know, so much eating, mindless eating, whatever I see, I eat, eat, eat. And just to please palate and tongue. But in it's uh coincidentally, it was good that I had experience of having whole month of salad when I was a teenager. At age 15, I did this experiment on myself. Just eating just whole month nothing but salad. One whole month nothing but mung beans. Those things I did even teenager. And even when I, you know, here in Los Angeles, I started a couple of times like whole month nothing but salad. Those experiments gave me courage to see what I can, what what will be the outcome if I go for raw food. So that gave me, you know, okay, at least let me try. What will happen? As my sister says, you know, you're going to fall sick. And so I said, okay, if I fall sick, I will quit. But if I do one, and also then I want to continue. So this is what is gave me courage based on my previous experience on doing something different than most of the people. You know, it's like nobody wants to live one month, whole month on salat, nothing else. It's difficult. But that gave me discipline, that gave me the willpower, that gave me the confidence that hey, you know, I can do it. If I did it a few times back, so I can do it now. And that the experimentation, the the my the the curiosity came out and it's okay, I want to do it. And I that's as I said earlier, I noticed very measurable, you know, it is one can measure, one can see it, is it's there is a difference. Now, all you see with my skin, even, you know, people take me at right now 67. But if I go out and I I tell people 67, they don't want to take it, take me as a 67. One uh young lady said, no, you are lying. You know, you want you want to see my my ID, you know. So it's it's uh it it's a compliment, and I that's what I get it. But not only the physical appearance, that's one thing important. I know all women, you you are spending so much on cosmetic. But if you get this natural, the glow on the skin, natural, your hair becomes naturally beautiful. You you have that aura and you have that you know karishma on the natural, everything natural, nothing superficial, nothing cosmetic. But it is it it will give you so much joy living that life that now you know it is naturally it everything is happening the way you want without spending money. And because you are now taking away all the toxicity out from your body, when the toxicity goes out, the skin is is a reflection of our liver. Our liver absorbs the toxicity in our body, right? So it gets deteriorated. In my own case, in my book, I gave my 21 year of record, in 2009, my ALT, which is uh the liver enzyme, was 44.0. It's supposed to go as I age, you know, I is supposed to go more and more, 40 to 50, 50 to 60. But in from 2009, that 40 become 21. Oh wow. It reversed. It's reversed, yeah. So in in 52 percent, it went back, is like instead going higher number, it went lower. So that is the reason of my skin, which looks young, because now my liver health is so good, it is like somebody in 30s and 40s. Yeah, so that is what one any if I can do it, and as I said, I don't have medical background, I don't I'm not a nutritionist, but this is my basic, you know, the the instinct of of going to the nature. Mother nature is so kind, it it is mother nature is giving to everybody, so why not human? But human try to become more smarter and they screwed it up very well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we we have our our quirks, we'll say that. So if someone is thinking about doing this, because I know for me, I've I've changed my diet so much over the years, but it took it was a process. I I tried to eat salads every so often, and then I started leaning into more healthier foods, and I got rid of red meat, I got rid of processed foods, frozen foods, canned foods, like I got rid of all the stuff, but it took a long time to get there. And so, especially coming from a place where you were saying your words that you were eating like a pig to go to this. What's one piece of advice that you can give for someone who wants to make a radical change like this for their diet?
SPEAKER_00So this I see it is like uh like let's say just analogy-wise, smoking cigarette. If somebody is smoking cigarette, you know, cannot just give up. Not most of the people, you know, they cannot give up. They have to try and then it is slowly, slowly they give up. Exactly the same way. This this any food we are hooked up, we are addicted to that. Our brain is asking that food again and again. Doesn't matter what food it is, but it is now you are habitual to have that food. Whether it's a canned food, whether it is uh any processed food or any any other food. So now it is to break that habit. First of all, you have to you have to accept this that hey, this habit is not good, it is not helping me. So it's like anybody is is uh alcoholic, he has they have to accept that hey, alcohol is not good. First thing that accept it. Once the acceptance is comes, then now what you are going to do it. So slowly, slowly you you you quit. But that you you don't want to be like uh you know, withdrawal syndrome that you you fall you feel so miserable. No. So what you do, you is like eating uh healthy food. You add some healthy food. You keep eating what you are eating, but let's say you start 20%, 25% of fruits or vegetables, then keep in mind that your goal is to go more. So then from 25 to go 30%, 40%, 50%, whatever you think it is, you can do it. And this is not the punishment, this is you are doing for yourself. If you are not going to do it now, in your senior age, you are going to suffer. So rather not not suffering at the latter age, accept right now that hey, this is what is needed for myself. So I'm not doing for somebody else. This is the only life one has on this planet. And how to spend that life more productive way, more meaningful way, without any pain, and then it's like I'm there is no guarantee that I'm not going to fall sick. I'm going to fall sick someday and I'm going to die too. But instead of 5, 7, 10, 15 years of misery, maybe 5, 7, 10, 15 days or hours of misery. So minimizing that misery and having more joyful, meaningful life. And that is something what I think is important. And that's what I'm doing. It is like a still running marathon, and I want to do at least a couple more. My goal is to run one more marathon with my grandson, my granddaughter. So that is something which is which is the goal. It happens, it happens. If not, still I'm I'm I'm going to continue the way it is right now. The life is beautiful. You know, the your question is what was how I I got you know transformation. It is without any any expectation. I started it and I saw the you know results so wonderful, and then yeah, it is there is no I don't want to go back.
SPEAKER_02I don't blame you. It sounds like it's made quite the transformation. So we know we heard your motives behind it, why you did it, some of the health benefits of that. What's been the most surprising change that you've noticed after doing this?
SPEAKER_00Surprising change is when I was eating, whatever I was eating, I'm eating right now 25% of what I used to eat in 2009. And I'm creating almost 200% of energy. That surprised me. A lot of people, even today, they they surprised, how can you do this? You are not eating. They are seeing me. My family members, my all day, they are seeing me. I'm not eating that much. My quantity is, are you done? I'm done. Oh wow, you didn't eat anything. But I said, that's enough for me. So quantity-wise, it becomes so small, but the energy production becomes so bigger. The reason I see it is like now, earlier, whatever I was eating, it was I used to eat, and then next day it goes out from the body, and without even absorbing or without even taking, you know, the nutrients, and it is not real digesting, you know, the food. It was just uh I I I I I tell people now, I was not knowing then. I say, if you are eating without any intention or purpose, you are nothing more than a poop making machine. And I was one of them, okay? And it is like what mindless eating. So now I'm seeing I'm not eating anything, no matter what is in front of me. Me, if I'm not hungry and I don't see there is any any real need of the food, I'm not I'm not going to put in my mouth.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Having said that, you know, it's like let's say in the morning my wife used to give almond and walnut in one small ball. And if I ate everything and let's say two, four pieces of almond is still in the ball, I'll not eat if I'm done. And my wife says, come on, in four pieces, eat two. No, not even one piece more. That much calibration happened in my body now. It was not before, okay? That my my internal system, those all the system which is working so well, is telling me how much to eat, what to eat, when to eat, and it is in such a uh standardized manner that you know it it gives me much more control over my energy production.
SPEAKER_02So I've heard before that it takes typically, and this is probably more accurate for the poop eating uh the poop making machines, but I've heard that it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you're full. Is that accurate for you, or do you know when you need to stop eating much faster than that?
SPEAKER_00So these these people are whoever bringing this theory and all this uh result. I don't think is is you see in any anywhere in nature. You check, you know, okay, the giraffe is drinking water, and okay, I'm done. Okay, walk out, or eating something, food, even some, you know, uh any animal or the bird, so much food out there, they will not eat more if they are done. There is an instant, is it's those meters inside our sensors are so good, but we screwed it up. That's why they say 20 minutes. I don't think you need 20. It is is so instant. It's like this. Let me give you one analogy, Heather. Let's say in your in your house, air condition is there, but the thermostate is screwed up. Thermostate don't need 20 minutes, it turns on and turns off. That's it. That exactly thermostate is in our body too. That kind of sensor is in our body, it tells you, see, this the sensor, the body, our our the body temperature is continuously maintained. It don't it is not telling you though, okay, now I'm going to turn on and after 20 minutes your body temperature will be. No, it is continuously happening and it is seamlessly so nicely happened. But whoever said this 20 minutes, I think you know maybe is it maybe true, but because it is all screwed up. Not that's the reason. If real functioning mechanism, the the mother nature made it so nice that it has to happen all the time, every time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so I'm I'm curious. This is just my personal curiosity, but how often do you eat?
SPEAKER_00Again, if I'm not hungry, I will not eat. Period. So yesterday was my my fasting day. Whole day, Wednesday, I eat only and only nuts, no fruits, no vegetable. Now, having said that, the last not last one, the one marathon before, which I ran with my son, I ran whole marathon on one avocado. Now, I'm not telling people to to do this because that that's not going to work for them. It is working for me because I did this for more than 15 years at that time. Right? It is like this. If my phone is so good, I if I charge only 15 minutes and it's get charged fully. But let's say if your phone is not that good, it requires one hour charging. So it everybody is different. My body is now is become so good for making energy, conserving energy, and and it's it's uh the storage of energy and giving me on demand when I need. If I have to run right now 10 miles, I have energy without eating any food, I can go and run 10 miles. I have that confidence that I have in my body that battery is charged. So this is it is like people, everybody is different. Every age, every, you know, let's say for men, for women, whether you are in a cold climate, whether you are in a warm climate, everything plays the role. And and then the the the way you work. If you are doing more physical work, then you need a little bit maybe more. But if you are not doing that much physical work, then you maybe you don't need. So all those things is is uh is not that one formula of fits to everybody, that's not going to work.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the reason I asked is because there's such a trend or has been for a while, and and I've been exploring it myself about fasting. And so I was curious if you do fast, and that's why I I asked that question.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so fasting is is good if you can without starving. So why why fast even? So my my logic is is like okay, the whole week I'm eating, so maybe let let's give one one day little off to the my digestion system. If they're working, you know, 24-7. So one day off. You need one day off. Sunday, let's say people are not working, so it's the any day you are anybody is not working, so that is the one day off, so that it is more more like a cleaning process. We clean our our body outside. We shampoo our hair, we brush our teeth, we change you know, cloth our putting in the laundry. So cleaning is important. So in in inside, who is cleaning inside? Is there any formula to clean inside? There's okay, you do this and it will get clean. The inner cleaning system also requires some kind of off. We are sleeping. Why are we sleeping even? So brain needs to clean every day, and that is when we are sleeping, it is getting cleaned. Now, if the people are not sleeping well, they have all those problems. That the the accumulation of all all all those dirt in there and is going to give you the result sometime. Generally, you know, is in the senior age. So those those everything is is the organ needs to clean. If you can of, you know, if you can see that fasting is not going to hurt, is not hurting you by producing less energy, then do it. If it is I I don't tell people what to do about fasting because everybody has different ways. Try a little bit. If you're feeling good, then go for more. So that's how I learned. I didn't follow anybody that hey, somebody told me to do fasting or not. But this is what I thought. Let let me give one day rest to my digestive system. Or and still I'm eating. I'm eating just a little bit of nuts, and that's about it. But no fruits, no vegetables.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Awesome. Well, tell us a little bit more about your book.
SPEAKER_00So this book came out just a couple of months back. I was I started writing in the last six years and accumulated all this information. And then I was I I was I knew that nobody's interested reading my book, you know, what I'm doing, my experience, you know, what who who cares? You know, nobody wants to do. But my 21 year of my own medical record, my blood work, everything was there. And one doctor, uh, Dr. Sriniksha, and I said, This is what my intention is. And it says, Daksha, this is wonderful. This is what it's you know, if you put everything together, it is going to so good. Doesn't matter if somebody wants to read, it's fine. Not don't want to read is fine. But as I said, you know, this is my last inning of my life. I'm 67, maybe I will five years, ten years, twenty years, I don't know. But whatever time I have, I want to give back to the world that before I leave this planet, I want to leave behind something which is helpful to this generation and maybe next generation. Because right now, the way I'm seeing the health situation world over is so bad. Everything, everybody is popping pills from morning till evening, and Monday to Sunday, you know, they they they keep the box and pop and it's like what this is, I mean, mindless. And again, this this medication also is they made it so normalization, is okay. Yeah, eat, eat, eat, eat medicine is fine. And that's what I want to think. You know, is like let think about it first. Don't even don't believe what I am saying. Do your own research. Every listener's you know, do do don't believe me, don't believe anybody. First thing is question everything. Once you question, and then you are going to get those information that the truth you found. Now you follow your truth. It's not somebody's truth. You know, it's it is somebody can say anything and it's like somebody, yeah, it's let's say two 20 minutes it takes. So, you know, I don't know, you know, from where they so maybe it's good, maybe not good, but question it, apply your rational mind, and see that, you know, when you nowadays it's so easy, everything is easy. You can ask Chat GPT, you can ask Claude, you know, Gemini, all whatever, you know, and ask questions. Don't believe even that. You ask two, three different, you know, platform, and and then you see what is reality. And once you see that reality, and then you say, okay, you know what? Now I think this is true. Let me try. And then you go in that direction. That will give you the real path for the success, or maybe it's I don't want to say success, even, but at least in your gradual improvement.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, awesome. So did I see that you do coaching as well?
SPEAKER_00Yes, but I I nowadays what happens is like uh time is is a very is problematic. I have 24 hours a day, everybody have 24 hours a day. Just now, before uh your or this podcast, I was with the serious XM radio network. They put me on on their uh you know, airway, and it was live. So it was it's it's like I'm doing more instead going one-to-one, is I'm going to use my time and it is going to be okay. But I want to now, as I said, time is limited on this planet now. I want to maximize my time. I want to see that you know it goes to more people. Like now through your podcast, your audience, your listeners, will will think about it. When they they if let's say if they buy a book, it's fine. If not, still is fine. At least their their mind is going, hey, you know, what is this raw food? Why is this? And why what I'm saying in I'm I'm backing up with the my medical record, and I know that most of the people are so skeptical because there are so many people are selling so much. So I knew that it is not going to work if I just talk. But I I behind my talk, I put the data, real data from the hospital. So that is a lab, you know. So that that data is going to talk itself. So I don't have to talk so much, you know. And yeah, it is it is so that is what my goal is to write the book. And coaching, I don't want to do it now, right now, more because right now I'm already started working on my second book and the third one. So I I and I see that that is is producing more better result, quicker, better. And whatever I write, it is one can go and check it out, and you know, they can see the improvement, and then they can come back to me and I will definitely help them. Anybody wants any help, they can come to me. I will not say no. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_02So tell us a little bit more about your website and anything else that you have coming up, any projects, anything like that.
SPEAKER_00So, website name is raw foodist raw f o d i e st dot com. Extra e there in foodist. So that's the one way you know one can have my blogs, my videos, uh, all other activity there. My book is also there. But if anybody wants to see the book and buy the book, in nature we trust, go to Amazon, type my name or enter my name, A X A Y, S H A H, and you will see my book, or in the book section, if you go in nature we trust, and you're going to see this book.
SPEAKER_01Awesome.
SPEAKER_02Amazing. I will make sure I put all the links and everything in the description for the show as well. So I have one more question before we wrap up. And this might be the most important question that I've asked the whole show. When do you plan to run your next marathon?
SPEAKER_00So I want, I generally this many years, what I did, one year I ran, next year not running, and then the year after. So la this year I ran already in March. So two months back. Next year I don't want to run, but there is a two offer which I'm I'm not I have not decided yet, but one from my daughter-in-law, she says she wants to run with me. So I'm trying to see that, yeah, if we can coordinate and we can run together. Second offer, somebody podcaster like you from Florida, she says, Aksha, I want to run with you. I will come to Los Angeles from Florida to run with you. She already ran once, so she said, but I was very slow. No worry it. As far as we can, you know, cross the fish uh finish line, that's that's good gracefully. So I I I'm seeing that, you know, if I can run. And my goal is actually my one goal, one dream is I want to run with my grandchildren. So uh I don't know when that is going to happen. But yeah, I have already three grand sons, one granddaughter is on the way. But when I will run, that I don't know. But that's the goal.
SPEAKER_02Well, I hope that works out for you. Thank you so much for being on the show today. I really appreciate having this conversation with you. Such good information, and thank you. It this was this was great.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Heather, for inviting. And yes, feel free to ask any question and I mean your audience, or if you even after that, you know, if you have any other question, or maybe if you read the book and you have you want to go for another episode, you know, after four months, six months, we will do it.
SPEAKER_02Okay, awesome. That sounds great.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Before you go, everything I teach came out of an awakening that took me apart at first. And the self-spirit method is the whole road back. 14 steps built in the order that I actually needed them. From finding the ground underneath you to living as the person who comes out the other side of it. If you're ready for that deep version of this work, the link is in the show notes.
