Welcome to another tale from Bark Mountain. The fire hall felt quieter than usual. Even Goose the Fire Dog noticed. He sat by the bay doors, ears tilted, tail still. Firefighter Waz's boots weren't by his locker. His laugh wasn't echoing through the hall. And for the first time in a long time, his chair was empty. Fire Chief Steve gathered the crew around the big wooden galley table. All right, team, he said gently. Today we're heading to the hospital. Waza's surgery went well, but he has a long road ahead of him. Jake swallowed hard. He was the newest firefighter, still learning and still trying to find his place. Is he okay? Jake asked. Chief Steve nodded. He's strong, Jake, but even strong people need time to heal. The crew loaded up into the trucks. No sirens this time, just quiet determination. Goose sat up front with Chief Steve watching the road as if he understood exactly where they were going. When they pulled into the hospital, everything felt different. There were no flashing lights, no rushing, just quiet halls and soft footsteps. Inside Waz's room, he lay in a hospital bed with a brace around his lower back, machines softly beeping beside him. But when he saw his crew start to walk into his room, he smiled and perked up immediately. Hey, Waz said. His voice was a little weaker than usual, but still full of warmth. Sure took you guys long enough, he gave out a little laugh. Goose jumped gently onto the edge of his bed, carefully placing his paws beside Waz. His tail wagged slowly, like he knew to be extra careful. We missed you, Dazzle said. Place isn't the same without you, Red Added. Waz chuckled, then winced slightly. It turns out lifting people out of cars isn't as easy as it looks. Jake stood quietly at the back of the room, unsure of what to say or even where he fit in. Waz noticed. Hey, Jake, he called out softly. Come here. Jake stepped closer. His heart was pounding. Waz reached out his hand and held on to Jake's. You remember that call? Waz asked. The car crash? Lifting the woman out? Jake nodded. You helped save that lady, he said. Waz shook his head gently. We saved her. That's what we do. He paused, taking a careful breath. My back's gonna take some time to heal. The surgeon said it will be several months. So while I'm healing, he looked Jake right in the eyes. I need someone to take my spot. Jake blinked. Me? Waz smiled. Yeah, you're ready. You care, and you show up every time. We've all been watching you. And that's what really matters to this crew. Jake's voice was small. I'm still new though. What happens if I mess up? Waz grinned. You will. We all do. But you won't be alone. Look around this room. This crew will be there for you just like they were there for me when I needed help. Fire Chief Steve stepped forward. He's right, Jake. No one does this job alone. Not ever. Jake looked around the room. Everyone from the department was there smiling at him with encouragement. I'll do my best, Jake said. Waz leaned his head back to his pillow with a proud smile on his face. That's all any of us can ever do is to try our best. The room felt warmer somehow, not because nothing was wrong, but because everyone was there, together. As the crew got ready to leave, Goose gave Waz one last nuzzle. Waz patted him on the head and said Thanks for staying with me last night, buddy. Jake lingered for a moment, unsure of what to do. Then Waz gave him a small nod and a thumbs up. You'll be fine, Jake. Trust the people around you. And as the firefighters walked out of the hospital and back to their trucks, there was one empty spot. But it wasn't forgotten. Jake nervously climbed into Waz's seat, but then he sat up tall and felt proud. As the trucks drove out of the parking lot on their way back to the fire hall, the firefighters knew this to be true. When one of the crew falls, the team doesn't break. It comes together, stands stronger, and carries each other forward. So no one they love ever has to get back up on their feet without someone beside them.
