Speaker 1 0:18
Hi, welcome to flip devotional the podcast. I'm Martha Shannon, the author of flip devotional the book, and I'm joined by my husband, Steve Shannon,
Unknown Speaker 0:27
and I'm Steve Shannon,
Speaker 2 0:30
and just tell us about flip devotional the book, and because that's what the podcast is based upon, right, right?
Speaker 1 0:37
The book started several years ago when I felt God prompted me to write a devotional that would get people to read His word the Bible every day.
Unknown Speaker 0:46
Wouldn't all devotionals do that?
Speaker 1 0:49
Yes, sort of most devotionals give you one verse from the Bible and then about a page of narrative that relates to the verse.
Speaker 2 0:59
And that's not a good approach. That's not good, or is there a better way? You think
Speaker 1 1:04
it's it's okay. The problem, I found was people would proudly say they read their devotional each day, but not their Bible. And I believe God will speak to everyone through the Bible, but only if you read it.
Speaker 2 1:20
So what is flipped devotional the book, then, how is does that get me to the Bible?
Speaker 1 1:26
Well, it's flipped from other devotionals. It has one sentence of narrative and a passage of scripture that relates to it.
Speaker 2 1:35
So you're actually reading a lot of the Bible every day. Yes. How much of the Bible will you read? If you go through the whole year with a flipped devotional every day, how much of that Bible will you touch?
Speaker 1 1:50
They'll read over 2000 verses and something from every book in the Bible.
Speaker 2 1:56
So 2000 verses. How many books are in the Bible? Do we know? I think it's like 66 maybe 60 plus. So you're going to touch all parts of the Bible. Have that experience. I don't have many verses are in the Bible, but that comes out to be a fair amount of verses, seven or so every day, six, every day, right? It's really, it's an opportunity to get you engaged in the Bible?
Speaker 1 2:21
Yes, yes. Um, another problem I've found is that people will start to read their Bible, and then they just, like, get stuck, like a lot of people, will begin reading their bible in the book of John, which is a great place to start if you've never read the Bible, but when they finish John, they don't know where to go next, and they just don't go anywhere and they quit reading.
Speaker 2 2:51
So this was so how does flip devotional help you with this?
Speaker 1 2:59
Well, it sets it up for you. So there's a passage of scripture to read every single day. You don't have to think about, what am I going to read today? You just turn to it and read it
Unknown Speaker 3:13
and how,
Speaker 2 3:15
how did you come to learn that this is a challenge for a lot of people to read in the Bible that they start and don't know where to go next.
Unknown Speaker 3:22
Well, I've had this problem.
Speaker 1 3:25
I've been in numerous small groups where people talked about they didn't read their Bible. They read their devotionals, they read other things, but they just didn't read their Bibles. We have two daughters who struggled to read their Bibles. However, you my lovely husband has not struggled with this, right?
Speaker 2 3:51
Yeah, and that's more of a reflection of me and just how I become very regimented in my approach. And it really started teaching Sunday school class, and I had to know what I was going to be talking about. So I had to read the Bible first. And I'll never forget one day in class, one of the students at the good fourth, fifth graders, he's 1011, 12 age group, one person said, I don't think anyone has read the whole Bible. I said, Well, I think they have, and I think the weekend, there's a thing called the One Year Bible, and you can go ahead and every day you read through the whole Bible, and people were shocked. And we started doing that, and I've had fourth and I had to read it to stay ahead. And through that, I became very disciplined. And I must confess, the Flipped devotional is the first devotional I've ever read, because I just read the Bible and I get through it, I read it regularly. I pick what I'm going to do the one year. Bible is a great discipline. Flip devotional is really a great opportunity to get into God's Word in a. Way that helps, that kind of guides you through the process, and you don't have to guess what you're supposed to read next or pick something and then go from there. This lays it out for you. I just think that's the beauty of this approach, and you know what's going
Speaker 2 5:21
on, all right, so now let's talk about flip devotional, the podcast. I should know what it is, but tell me what flip devotional the podcast is. Okay.
Speaker 1 5:31
Flip devotional, the book came out December 2024 this year. I wanted to come alongside the readers and have some discussion about these passages. The book encourages the reader to underline or highlight parts that stood out to them, or write questions they had. And I thought we might touch on some of those things through a podcast.
Speaker 2 5:55
So every week, we're going to talk about the passages we've read
Unknown Speaker 6:00
up through that
Speaker 1 6:01
week, yes, and there's a bonus flip devotional companion each month on the website and on the Facebook page, an additional scripture for each day will be posted. So if you read the flip devotional last year, you can read the companion verses this year, or a reader that read the flip devotional this past year told me she's going to read the passages again, but include more of the reading, like read the rest of the chapter or the passages before and after it
Speaker 2 6:37
Okay, so it's not too late to Get a copy of the flip devotional the book, right? Start doing that. That can still happen, right, right. Okay. And we encourage you to have your own Bible as you do this, because you may want to go into more depth on a whatever you read that day, and go back and look at that, the before and after scripture, kind of what set it up and what happened around it. And we just get you into the habit of getting there. And if you don't have a Bible, you can go to online all sorts of options, Amazon, Barnes and Noble. Some stores still exist. There used to be a huge network of stores, and those are no longer there. So it's really online. I found actually one at Ollie's, which is a store that sells, I guess, surplus stuff. Got one there, so they're ready to they're easily available. Flip devotional is the new NIV. What's NIV
Unknown Speaker 7:32
mean? New International Version, and
Speaker 2 7:35
that's a translation, yes. Okay, so if you don't have a Bible and you get the flip devotional, maybe you should look for an NIV translation. So it's the same this it's the messages are the same. Some of the words are different. Takes place with different translations. So that's we're going to do. And just to clarify, so we have flip devotional, the book, we have the podcast, we have a website and a Facebook page, correct? So there's a lot of opportunities to become engaged in flip devotional, whatever you want to do it online. You want to do it with a podcast. You actually, I'm an old guy. I like books, I like paper. So I have that option available to me, the flip devotional, the book itself.
Speaker 1 8:21
So, yeah, the flip devotional, the book is not available online. It's not available digital. And the companion versus it's just the reference. So you're going to need a Bible to look
Speaker 3 8:36
up the passages. Yeah, that companion piece will be on
Unknown Speaker 8:40
the Facebook page and the website, okay,
Speaker 2 8:42
so you can go there and find the mechanic piece. Okay, yes,
Speaker 1 8:46
and flip devotional of the book is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and, yeah, order those. They you know, Amazon will get it to you in nanoseconds, so you can start reading with us immediately, and we're excited to share our somewhat uneducated thoughts and views with you each week. Neither of us has a degree from a seminary, but we believe the Bible is God's word, that he can speak to everyone through His Word, and that he welcomes questions about what it says. Correct?
Speaker 2 9:31
That's all true. I think God does speak to you through His Word. So let's start. We're going to start with going from January 1 to January 5, those five days to start, and we're going to go through that process and just really have a casual conversation about what that means. And we will read it out loud, parts of it, parts of it, okay? And we'll do that, and then we'll have a conversation of what happens next. Right, right.
Speaker 1 9:58
Okay, yeah. So. We hope you come back and tune in January 5 or anytime afterwards and listen to our discussion of the first five days, and then we will be back every week to follow up.
Unknown Speaker 10:15
Yeah. All right. We ready.
Unknown Speaker 10:17
Thank you. Applause.
