If you haven't gotten Flip Devotional of the Book, you can get as an ebook on Barnes and Noble or as a book on Amazon and Bar or the Barnes and Noble. So welcome to this week's podcast. We are in April, doing April 7th through April 13th, and we are going through the Easter story.

Steve

We just celebrated Easter. Right?

Martha

Yes. Yes. So but we celebrate Easter. We're still going to continue the Easter story.

Steve

Correct. Because it's we haven't finished it yet.

Martha

Right. So and that's okay.

Steve

It is okay.

Martha

It's good. Um so yeah. You ready to jump in?

Steve

Ready. Let's do this.

Martha

All right. We're starting with April 7th. Uh the passage is Matthew 26, verses 31 through 35. This is when Jesus predicts Peter's denial.

Steve

Yeah.

Martha

If you don't know, I love Peter.

Steve

You do love Peter.

Speaker 1

He's he's one of my favorites, I think, because he's very relatable. Um he's he's just, you know, kind of a good old guy. He's trying to do his best and he messes up, but he's really trying.

Speaker

Keeps at it. And he's sometimes, I don't know if it's impulsive, but impulsive or bold or something.

Speaker 1

Impulsive is probably the better. Yeah. I would like to say bold because that seems more positive.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But yeah, you're right.

Speaker

But sometimes as you read about Peter, is especially after Jesus' resurrection, he becomes a leader. He's a leader now, but he he's different. He he sometimes I would think he's an example of someone who kind of acts without thinking.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah. He's the one who, when Jesus was walking on the water, said, Well, if it's you, t tell me to come walk with you. And Jesus said, Okay, come on. And he did.

Speaker

And he did.

Speaker 1

It's like, okay.

Speaker

And he did. He took two or three steps.

Speaker 1

Yeah. And you know, I'm I really think everyone else was a little jealous.

Speaker

Yes. Yes.

Speaker 1

Oh man, he got to do it.

Speaker

Yeah. I mean, there's not a record of everyone else doing it.

Speaker 1

But in this, no one is jealous of him.

Speaker

No. Um, I'm Jesus says But in some of this, he is the example of this, but not the only one. Right.

Speaker 1

Right. Yeah. As we said in the last podcast, really pretty much everyone betrayed Jesus.

Speaker

Yes. It's just the degree of betrayal, the method of betrayal, but yeah, some were more passive where they just didn't show up. Correct.

Speaker 1

But yeah. So poor, poor Peter, but um you know, Jesus saying what's gonna happen, you know, that they're gonna strike the shepherd, and meaning him.

Speaker

Meaning him. And the flock, the sheep of the flock.

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker

Where all everybody was, you know, at the dinner, the twelve disciples were all right.

Speaker 1

Yeah, they're all gonna be scattered. Yeah. And Peter, you know, you could just kind of see him puffing up his chest and going, aha, even if everyone falls away, I never will.

Speaker

Right. Thinking, acting, you know, boom. Yes. And not un you know.

Speaker 1

He's like, I'm here. I got your back, buddy.

Speaker

Yeah, I'm solid.

Speaker 1

I, you know, I would die for you. I would no, I am here.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's like, mm, yeah. No, and and we, you know, we know the rest of the story. We know he does exactly what Jesus said.

Speaker

Jesus said, You will disown me three times, not just once, but three times before the rooster crows, meaning tonight. Before the comes, right? He will do it three times. And he says, I will never disown you. You don't have to die, I will never disown you. And all the other disciples said the same thing. Now it's interesting, if you look at this from a short-term or long-term perspective, right? In the short term, Peter did exactly what Jesus said.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker

Exactly. No doubt whatsoever, this is what he did. Right. But in the long term, even if I have to die, wasn't with you, even if I have to die, I will never disown you. And in the long term, that is true, right? I mean, we don't know, but but someone I read, Saul, that he was crucified upside down. Uh-huh. And and the story, no evidence of this is, you know, what this means, but but he didn't seem worthy of being crucified the same way as Jesus. So he asked to be crucified. So he was hanging upside down.

Speaker 1

Yeah, which I I can't even figure out how they did that and how you die from that.

Speaker

So in the short time, he did exactly what Jesus said. But in the long run, you know Yeah, he did what he said. Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

But it's still, you know, you'll disown me. And he did. Obviously, he did that, right?

Speaker 1

Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker

So yeah. And some of these are stories are going to be kind of quick this week because it's, you know, real specific events.

Speaker 1

Right, right. So the next one, April 8th, is Mark chapter 14, verses 32 through 42. Uh, and this is the the Garden of Gethsemane. This is when uh Jesus goes with his disciples and he says, All right, you all sit here, but then he took Peter, James, and John, which are the three he typically took.

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 1

If if someone was gonna get to go a little closer, a little further. Yeah, it was a bigger event.

Speaker

Yeah. Transfiguration. He they they were there, right?

Speaker 1

Right. So he takes them a little bit further with them. And and he's he says, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

To the point of death. Stay here and keep watch. So they're I mean they're getting to know the very heart of Jesus.

Speaker

And they're seeing him, right? Being overwhelmed with sorrow. I don't think we've seen that before.

Speaker 1

Right. We've seen him angry, we've seen him sad, um, or at least crying when Lazarus. Jesus died. Jesus wept.

Speaker

Yeah, yeah. Um but that was always for someone else. This was about overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow. So I think he's yeah, understands. And he also says, he prays, right? Abba, Father, very, you know, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will, right? He's he's says, but no, let's do, and and again, this is where we get a hard time because what you will almost could be we gotta remember, it's will as like his intention, his desire. It's not what will happen. It's not like a verb, it's it's will as in so it's not what I would like, it's what you want to have happen. And again, that's the relationship. That's that's in those one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine words. That's our relationship with God, right? We need to have that same, not what I will or what I want, but what you want, what you will.

Speaker 1

Mm-hmm.

Speaker

So yeah.

Speaker 1

And they're they're at the Garden of Gethsemane, which I I looked up is part of the Mount of Olives.

Speaker

Uh-huh.

Speaker 1

So last week they were at the Mount of Olives. Um, they're they're there again. Yeah. Um so this is a familiar place for them.

Speaker

Yes. And I think they've gone there before. Yes.

Speaker 1

Yes. Um, yeah. This was uh, and it was a common place for Jesus to go to. Um so the disciples, um, he came back to them, and here it says, he says, Simon. So he's talking to Peter. Are you asleep?

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?

Speaker

Yeah, and Simon's significant, right? Because it was Simon, and then Jesus said, You'll be called Peter, and you know, be the rock of my fountain, you know, and it's very interesting. Uh, if you go to French-speaking countries, they have signs on the highway, the equivalent of falling rocks, that has the word Pierre. And in French, there's many men called Pierre, right? Uh-huh. So it apparently in French is the same word as rock. You know, so it was the same thing. But I think this Simon reference, right? Because right before, uh he's Peter, right?

Speaker 1

Well, I was just looking back.

Speaker

He's not called Peter.

Speaker 1

I think other times Jesus says Peter.

Speaker

But he changed his name way back to the other. He did change it, right?

Speaker 1

But but did he use it or was it going to be his name?

Speaker

Later.

Speaker 1

Yeah. So I I hadn't thought of that, so I didn't look to see if there's a place where Jesus called Peter Peter. Yeah. But here he calls him Simon later when we have the after his resurrection and he comes and speaks to Peter. Uh you know, when they're fishing and says, you know, will you feed my sheep? Yeah, I'm glad I said that real quick. He's he calls them Simon there also. So that's kind of interesting. I don't know. He did say he would be called Peter, uh-huh. But I don't know if anyone actually called him Peter.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Till later. So that's kind of interesting.

Speaker

Yeah, but throughout, like when he walks on water, Lord if it's you, Peter replied.

Speaker 1

Yeah, but that's the that's the writer saying Peter.

Speaker

Yeah, but but he's always referred to as Peter.

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker

Not Simon. But these were also written. Yeah, afterwards. But this is an event that reported that took place, right? So it is, they all recognize him as Peter, and we don't know when, but he was, you know, you will be called Peter, so maybe it's just not.

Speaker 1

No, I think is I think it's really interesting.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

No one else probably does.

Speaker

No, I think it doesn't.

Speaker 1

I could totally get into researching and and seeing if there's anything that that holds that up. Um, but he you know, he he goes to Peter and says, Are you asleep? And one thing I I found interesting is the very last line in this passage says, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. In the past, I always thought that was Peter saying that. You know, Jesus comes, hey, are you why are you sleeping? And I thought Peter said the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. That's why I was sleeping. But Jesus says this.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I don't I don't really know what to do with that. Um I I think it's interesting. Um, I'm not sure, yeah, where where to go with that. So maybe I can find And interesting.

Speaker

You return, are you asleep? Are you asleep? Once more he came back, prayed the same thing. You found him again sleeping, right? Returning a third time. Are you still sleeping? He's gonna deny him three times, he's sleeping three times. He asks him Peter, do you love me?

Speaker 1

Three times.

Speaker

Three times. Three times.

Speaker 1

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I sorry, I said the last line. Well, it was the last line on that page. I forgot to turn the page in my book.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Um yeah. And then he says, Rise, let's go. Here comes my betrayer.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, he he knows what's gonna happen.

Speaker

He knows, yeah, yeah. He knows the dipper.

Speaker 1

So April 9th is Matthew 26, 47 through 56. And this is when Judas comes with a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priest and the elders. And says, now the betrayer had arranged a signal that the one I kiss is the man, arrest him. Yeah. Like they didn't know who well, I don't know. Maybe it was. Right. Right, yeah, since it's not the head people, it's right.

Speaker

And it wasn't the six o'clock news.

Speaker 1

Right. This yeah, yeah, this is true. So um, and he says, do what you came for, friend.

Speaker

Friend.

Speaker 1

Whew.

Speaker

Yeah, yeah. And it's interesting, then one of his Jesus companions takes out his sword, cuts off the servant of the high priest, cuts off his ear, right?

Speaker 1

And one of the other gospels names as Peter.

Speaker

Right.

Speaker 1

Which kind of falls in place with him being action first.

Speaker

Impulsive. Yes.

Speaker 1

And it's like soup.

Speaker

And even that other gospels, Jesus picks up the ear and read and heals them.

Speaker 1

Yes. And and no one the people who have come to take him, yes.

Speaker

And and no one says, wow, that's that's uh I hadn't seen that before.

Speaker 1

Now one thing I wondered, and I've never used a sword. Yeah, I I don't know. Do you do you have to did he do that because he was very skilled? He just pulls out a sword and it's like shoom, just cuts the ear off, or was he just kind of sloppy and that's all he got?

Speaker

Or I I have no idea. But I wonder if it's a good thing.

Speaker 1

It had to be fast for no one else to go, wait, stop, don't do it.

Speaker

Right, right, right. And and surprise, people were kind of shocked, I guess it's happening. But but it's it's I would think, you know, I don't what do I know? Um if you're using a sword that Peter had, it's probably not the same caliber of sword a Roman soldier had, right? I mean something, and I would think it he just pulled it out and and went after the guy. I would think you'd have to be a very good person with a sword to cut an ear off. Right? Right. You know, without, you know. And I don't know which gospel it is, but one of them has Jesus putting it back on.

Speaker 1

You know, and it's like Yeah, do we not have that here?

Speaker

No. But it's just kind of interesting that that it's and that didn't cause anyone to re-evaluate.

Speaker 1

All right, something else I thought was interesting because Jesus um says, I mean he's he kind of reacts like um, you know, don't don't pull a sword out. Don't don't do that. He it kind of makes it feel like you know you you shouldn't be doing that. In Luke chapter 22.

Speaker

Yeah, that's where he puts the ear back on.

Speaker 1

So yeah, so he's arrested there. Well, if you go about 10 verses before he's arrested, he is talking with his disciples. This is in Luke, it's looks like it's part of the Last Supper. They're having conversation. Oh, it's right after he says, Oh, here's the answer to our question. According to Luke, Jesus said, I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.

Speaker

Okay.

Speaker 1

So he did call him Peter somewhere, according to Luke. Yeah, but then he says, Uh, when I sent you with without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? Nothing. He said, but now, if you have a purse, take it, also a bag. If you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. And says the disciple said, See, Lord, here are two swords. Said, that's enough. I I'm I'm thinking the sword that was cut the ear off is one of those two swords.

Speaker

Yeah. Sure. So And Peter would have one.

Speaker 1

He's kind of sounding like you shouldn't have a sword, but he he just said, You're gonna need a sword.

Speaker

Yeah, and and Luke, that same one, he puts put the sword back in place and he healed the servant's ear in his final miracle. Wow, final miracle.

unknown

Okay.

Speaker

Except the resurrection, I guess.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

unknown

I don't know.

Speaker 1

Maybe that was God's miracle. Yeah. Um another thing that I thought was interesting in this passage, um, he you know, he says, put the sword back. Do you think I cannot call on my father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Where else is that?

Speaker

Um he's being tempted? Yes. Bing bing bing force. Yes.

Speaker 1

So when he's being tempted, Satan says, you know, jump off. He'll send his angels to save you.

Speaker

Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1

I don't know. I just kind of like that.

Speaker

Yeah. But he didn't. Right.

Speaker 1

In the temptations, no.

Speaker

No, we didn't do it here either.

Speaker 1

No, no.

Speaker

Right?

Speaker 1

No, no, you're right. Yeah.

Speaker

Yeah. No. Right?

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.

Speaker 1

Right. I mean, this is why Jesus came.

Speaker

Yeah. Yeah. And the writing of the prophets, right?

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

Might be fulfilled. And then all the disciples deserted him and fled. So all the disciples deserted him and fled. But who's the one who always gets sighted?

Speaker 1

Peter.

Speaker

Peter.

Speaker 1

Peter, yeah. April tenth is Mark fourteenth. Verses 53 through 61A. And April 11th is Mark 14, 61B.

Speaker

And the A and B is 65. That verse is split. Yes. And that's that's just the correct protocol.

unknown

Yes.

Speaker 1

Right.

Speaker

First half of the verse is A, and I don't know if there's ever a C. I guess there could be, but.

Speaker 1

I don't think so. Yeah. No. So this is when Jesus has been arrested. This is when he's taken before the Sanhedrin, the high priest, the chief priest, the elders, the teachers, all the important people are there. And this first part, and it says Peter followed him at a distance.

Speaker

But he followed.

Speaker 1

He followed him. Where's all the others?

Speaker

Yeah, I don't see Luke, right? I don't see the other Judas, right? John.

Speaker 1

Well, there's somewhere.

Speaker

Um have a young man.

Speaker 1

Well, one of them says that John knew people so like he could get in so far, and he got Peter in.

Speaker

And one was a young man followed, and they grabbed his cloak and he ran down naked.

Speaker 1

I think that was back when he was arrested. Yeah.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

He was the first streaker.

Speaker 1

The first streaker, yes. Well, as far as we know.

Speaker

Well, I guess Add. I'm sorry, people. You have to hear that conversation.

Speaker 1

Um so this first part is where uh um sorry, glancing at real quick. So Peter is there, they have Jesus in front in front of all the important people. Um they have gotten testimonies from people. They're trying really, really hard to make a case.

Speaker

They're looking for evidence. And none.

Speaker 1

And they said some of the testimonies, you know, were like, oh, that would be good, but then they didn't agree. So like they couldn't use them. So they're they're really struggling to get a case against Jesus to merit uh getting rid of him. Um and and then they ask him, you know, are are you not gonna answer? And Jesus doesn't say anything. You know, I figure he can't because, well, uh later he says something and they're like, aha.

Speaker

Uh-huh. Right.

Speaker 1

That's what we'll use against him.

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 1

Um, yeah.

Speaker

It's always been interesting to me that he doesn't answer here. He he doesn't answer, I guess, he says some things to Pilate, not a lot. He doesn't answer to whoever else, Herod, right? He's just, you know. But then as as I was thinking about this, he did pray, not my will, but your will. And maybe what you said about him answering, right? He would have been able to answer questions that may have not resulted in God's will.

Speaker 1

Right, right.

Speaker

You know, I don't know if that's true or not, but it's right.

Speaker 1

No, I thought the same thing. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker

Because that was his prayer, right?

Speaker 1

So And then, you know, they don't really have a case against um, but he is is treated so badly. They it says the high priest tore. Oh, no, the high priest tore his own clothes. Yeah. Okay, never mind, sorry. Um because of what Jesus said, yes.

Speaker

Yeah. And that's getting on to April 11th. That's on to April 11th.

Speaker 1

Yes, yeah. I skipped on.

Speaker

Yeah, but April 10th, it's just really, you know, he doesn't answer, right?

Speaker 1

Right.

Speaker

And they tried false testimony and they couldn't get enough, right? So they had nothing, right?

Speaker 1

And so when he did answer, um, says, Are you the Messiah? He says, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the mighty one and coming on the clouds of heaven. And then the high priest tore his clothes, was like, Aha, we don't need any more witnesses, we've got it. And then they spit on him, they blindfolded him, they hit him, they beat him.

Speaker

Yeah, then the guards beat him. Right? Yeah, and they kind of mocked him. Prophecy, prophecy, prophecy, right? Prophesy, yeah, prophesy, prophesy, prophesy. Right? So they did that.

Speaker 1

Yeah, they're I mean, they're just mocking him. Yeah.

Speaker

Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And they asked, Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed One? I am. Right. You know, and he says, I am. Then he says a whole sentence, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the mighty one coming on the clouds of heaven. That's when the high priest tours close. He didn't say when he said, I am. Right. Right. Right. I mean, it doesn't read that way.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

And you've heard the blasphemy.

Speaker 1

Yep.

Speaker

Then they mocked him, spit on him, blindfolded.

Speaker 1

Right. April the April 12th is when Peter disowns Jesus.

Speaker

Three times. Just like he said.

Speaker 1

Yep. Yep. And one of the, I I think one of them, I I thought I looked back, but I couldn't find it. Uh, I think has where Peter uh after the third one, he and Jesus make eye contact.

Speaker

Correct. There is one of the gospels where they say that. That that ends up being that. That's the you know, Jesus kind of turns and looks. So Peter was very close.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker

And looks. And then he hears the rooster.

unknown

Yeah.

Speaker

You know. And his denial was when people said, Well, you were with him. No, no, no, I don't know what you're talking about. You know, then another one. That fell with Jesus, right? No, no, no, no. I don't know what they're talking about. No, it's not that. Sure, you were your accent gives you away. You sound like someone. No, no, no, no. And he throw down curses and he swore to them. I don't know what you mean. Then the rooster crowed. And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Speaker 1

Yeah, he remembered what Jesus said. He goes in and cries. And again, this is one of those times where we give Peter a hard time. We think, how could you? How could you do that?

Speaker

Oh, I would never do that.

Speaker 1

Right, right. But um, first of all, in in Peter's shoes, I I get it.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

He was scared. They were all scared. Their their leader was taken and arrested, and they all know what's gonna happen. Right. And and they very well could come after them. Yes. And they're scared. I mean, yeah, who wouldn't be?

Speaker

Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1

So it's probably why I like Peter so much. I just feel like he needs someone to he's also in some ways very human. Oh, yes.

Speaker

I mean, he he he he knows he wants to do the right thing, right? But even here he realizes this is what Jesus said I would do, right? And again, he he didn't stop after the first one, right? Think, oh, every time. You know, he heard that earlier. He just denied and denied and denied again because of the fear of what was going to happen. You know, it's it's in some ways, it's a very human moment, right?

Speaker 1

Oh, yes.

Speaker

Even all that time with Jesus, it's still a very human moment. When when Jesus said, your will, not mine, a very human moment, right? I think that's part of what we see is the people who became the foundation of Christianity, right? Who were there, right? Were human.

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker

They were just, you know, people. And and they, you know, and and and we hear about it, we think about that, but we need to remind ourselves, you know, we're all human. We're we're all gonna do things we regret. Uh and I'm sure Peter spent his life regretting this.

Speaker 1

Yeah. And and I'm sure while he was doing it, while he was denying, he he never thought, oh, this is what Jesus said.

unknown

Right.

Speaker 1

It didn't click till the end. Yeah. When the rooster crowed, that's like, yeah. Oh my gosh. That's yeah. He yeah, it was just it was nowhere.

Speaker

So and it's here, it says, You will disown me three times. Disown is worse than deny. Right? You know, I think.

Speaker 1

Yes, yeah.

Speaker

You know, so it's just and he realized, right? He realized.

Speaker 1

Yeah. All right, so the last day for this week is April 13th. Um it's Luke 23. And you know, I'm kind of kind of sorry about this because the next day, which we'll do on the next podcast, is the rest of the story. So they're both Luke chapter 23, starting at verse 1. Um, the 14th goes through the 25th. So we get the beginning of Jesus being before Pilate and Herod. And next week we will uh get the end of it.

Speaker

Yeah, and maybe we'll just give a brief recap of this one next week.

Speaker 1

Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker

So um the whole assembly took him to Pilate. The whole crowd. Come on, we're going, right? And here he answers questions. Are you the king of the Jews? You have said so, right? Don't ask me. You've already said it, right?

Speaker 1

Yeah, and Pilate quickly says, I don't see anything.

Speaker

That's nothing. That was anything. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar, right? But there's another story where they ask him about taxes to Caesar, and he says, Show me a coin. Whose pictures on the coin? Caesar, give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's, right? So that he didn't oppose that, but that would clearly be, and claiming to be the Messiah, which is a king, but not a king, you know. So they're they're they're kind of playing with the words, right? So, but Pilate.

Speaker 1

Yeah. And I almost wonder if these leaders are um passing the butt. You know, Pilate's like, oh, he's a Galilean. Oh, he should go to Herod.

Speaker

Right.

Speaker 1

It's like, okay, I'm done.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You take him to Herod.

Speaker

Yeah. Because, you know, from Pilate's perspective, he's he's the ruler. And his job is, I guess, is to keep the peace in that part of the Roman Empire as much as anything else. So he says that, right? Uh, and then they say he's from Galilee. Oh, that's not my deal. I don't do Galilee, right? Right, right. And fortunately, Herod's right here in town. Send him to Herod, right?

Speaker 1

Yeah. And it says Herod was he was pleased. He was like excited because he'd heard about Jesus and he was hoping to see him perform some side.

Speaker

Water the wine, or you know, help Herod walk on water.

Speaker 1
