SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Flip Devotional the Podcast, where each week Martha Shannon, the author of Flip Devotional the Book, and Steve Shannon discuss the readings from the week. If you haven't gotten Flip Devotional the Book, it's available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble. It's also available as an ebook at Barnes and Noble. And that's it.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, that's it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay, thank you. All right. We are uh finishing up Easter this week. Couple of days of the Easter stuff, and then starting into May, which has its own little theme at the beginning, at least, of water.

SPEAKER_03

It does have a lot of water.

SPEAKER_01

So we'll we'll get to that when we start. Well, see, that's yes, April showers brings Mayflowers.

SPEAKER_03

Mayflowers bring pilgrims.

SPEAKER_01

Right. But it made me think, and April was already dedicated to Easter, so we couldn't do the water ones in East in April. So there you go. If you're wondering how it all went, that that is it. All right. So we are starting with April 28th, and we're going through May 4th. April 28th. If I was on the right page. Okay. Um, is John 21, um, verses 7 through 14. Last week we started the story. It was the miraculous catch of fish.

SPEAKER_05

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

And today we are finishing it. So once again, we split a story up into two podcasts, um, because that's just how it happens. All right. So this is after Jesus has been crucified, he's been resurrected, he has appeared to the disciples uh at least once or twice before now. And um so just to recap a little bit from last week, this was Peter just going, you know what, I'm just gonna go fish because they didn't know what to do, really.

SPEAKER_02

And they went back to what they knew.

SPEAKER_01

Understandably.

SPEAKER_02

They were fishing before.

SPEAKER_01

So they're they're backfishing um from April 27th last week. They're on the boat, um, they didn't catch anything. Jesus said, um, yeah, throw your net on the right side and you'll find some. They did, and the net was full of large fish or large number of fish. Okay. So today, April 28th, um Peter said it's the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

And the disciple who Jesus loves said to Peter.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I'm sorry, thank you.

SPEAKER_03

And that's John, right?

SPEAKER_01

The disciple Oh, yes, yes. All right, thank you. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_03

But he says that in classic Peter, right?

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

He realizes it is the Lord, so he wrapped his outer garment around him, right? And he takes off. He jumps in the water and goes. Right? Because it's Jesus. He's going. He's in, you know, this is I'm going, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's Peter.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I love Peter.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, right. The other disciples followed in the boat, right? Towing the net full of fish.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, because even though it's Jesus, they don't want to leave the fish behind.

SPEAKER_03

No, they're fishing all night, you know, and and really they don't know what they're going to do with their lives at this point, right? So bring some of the fish you caught. Jesus apparently is cooking, right? You know. And it always fascinates me. It was full of large fish. 153. Specific number.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

And obviously, they counted the fish because they're fishermen, right? 153. What's the significance of 153?

SPEAKER_01

I think I know, but tell me.

SPEAKER_03

I I I've heard one. There's 153 different groups of people, is one thing I heard. Oh. At some point, you know, that's what they thought. Some reason thought that would be 153 with then.

SPEAKER_01

Um I I heard the same, but about fish. There are like 153.

SPEAKER_03

Types of fish. Could be yeah. Yeah. I just looked it up. It said, you know, it's it's a large number, meaning go, right? So it's just, but they pull it up, right?

SPEAKER_01

So uh Jesus says, come and have breakfast.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. Third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. Third time.

SPEAKER_01

There it is, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So he's, you know, and it has burning coal. So he's already cooking fish and had some bread. Right? So he knew this was gonna happen, right? You know, that this was his plan and he had prepared. Now, I'm assuming he can light a fire pretty quick. You know, but he had fish and bread, which, you know. So it's just kind of neat that again it's Jesus and the disciples gathering, sharing food, and you know, happy to see each other. I mean, it's it's it's very um and this probably relates to the church potluck. You know, it's the origin of the potluck.

SPEAKER_01

So I think it's so sweet because I just I imagine the disciples, you know, coming in, they've pulled the fish up, and they're sitting around, and Jesus says Jesus took the bread and gave it to them, gave them the fish. And I I just imagine them just kind of sitting there in awe, just like staring at him and like, wow, we are once again with him and eating with him, yeah, like it used to be, and and just how that must have felt.

SPEAKER_03

And even that, it was come and have breakfast. Because they were up all night fishing, say worked hard, you know, throwing that, you know, looking, so they were exhausted. And Jesus met their need and had again, this is who Jesus is.

SPEAKER_01

And emotionally exhausted from all that was going on, all of the crucifixion, and and even though you know they knew Jesus had been resurrected, it's still he wasn't there with them. Right. And just that that loss they must have felt. Yeah. And to be able to sit there with him and eat, like a very calm, sweet time.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and very normal time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know, this is how it used to be.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes. So I yeah, I love that.

SPEAKER_03

It's and you know, and I've said this before uh on the podcast. If it's in the Bible, it has significance. Right? Mm-hmm. You know, because you don't want to say anything in the Bible is insignificant, but this has significance. And the significance is Jesus met them. The significance is Peter, soon as you realize, went out right away. No hesitation, right? And he becomes the leader of the Jerusalem church, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So good, good.

SPEAKER_01

All right, then April 29th is John 21, 15 through 19.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the next six verses that after we just read.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Um and this is uh a passage, but probably a lot of people know. Um so this is when Jesus says to Peter, and I don't know. Again, I just some of these stories I just imagine in my head how they looked, how they came about. I don't know if he's if they're all still sitting together eating. I kind of feel like this is a personal conversation just between Jesus and Peter. But I could be wrong.

SPEAKER_03

But um Jesus says to Peter There's another gospel, similar story, and John's behind them. Right. Talking about, remember Peter asks, what's gonna happen to him?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, right.

SPEAKER_03

You know, so it's similar, you know. So maybe they're separated from the group, maybe they're not, right? If they're in the group, I think part of what happens here. Well, go ahead and explain what happens, and I'll tell you what I think.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh so Jesus says, Simon, son of John.

SPEAKER_03

Never heard that before.

SPEAKER_01

So not using the Peter.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Do you love me more than these?

SPEAKER_03

And these being the other disciples.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Which another reason I feel like it was kind of a personal conversation. Yeah. Um he says, Yes, Lord, you you know that I love you. And Jesus says, Feed my lambs. I I wonder what Peter thought.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like he's a fisherman. Feed my lambs.

SPEAKER_03

They talked about shepherds before, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Probably Jesus is, you know, the great, whatever. You know, so and and even though he was a fisherman, they probably understood shepherds. I mean, I I would think in in in job classification, Fisher and Shepherd are similar. You know, they would probably knew people who were shepherds and understood, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And then he says, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter says, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. And Jesus said, Take care of my sheep. And then the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Says Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, do you love me? He said, Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you. And Jesus said, Feed my sheep. Now, what did you want to add?

SPEAKER_03

One, he asked them three times. Right.

SPEAKER_01

And the significance of that?

SPEAKER_03

Is Peter denied him three times. So part of it is, you know.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's like, let's not do that again. The other piece, I and I don't know if this is true, you know, again, have we said it before? We are not biblical scholars, but part of this almost designates Peter as the leader in the eyes of other people, right? Because Jesus is talking to him specifically. Simon, son of John, do you love me? Yes, feed my lambs, right? Simon, son of John, do you love me? Yes, Lord, take care of my sheep, right? And then, do you love me? You know I love you. Feed my sheep. And that's just saying, you know, it's kind of making him the shepherd, right? Making him the person responsible for Jesus' flock, which is the disciples and apostles and all the other folks that followed him around, right? So I don't know if that's it or not, but I could see other people saying that, right?

SPEAKER_01

You know. Um, the other piece is the word love. And in the Greek, there's three words for love, and I only know two of them right now. Um phileo, and you know, excuse me if I didn't say it right, uh, is like a brotherly love. And then agape is a deeper love. I think you're gonna Google it and help me out here.

SPEAKER_04

I'm trying.

SPEAKER_01

So while I'll I'll keep going. So the first time Jesus says, Do you love me? He used agape, do you agape me? And Peter said, I phileo you. And the second time Jesus says, Do you agape me? And Peter says, I phileo you. The third time Jesus says, Do you phile me? And Peter says, You know, I phileo you.

SPEAKER_03

So there's Eros with romantic love.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Looks like philea, I don't know. Um, but that is deep friendship, okay, and agape is unconditional selfless love.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. So I I read a little bit of a commentary, and that was significant that different forms of love, the word love were used, and that Peter didn't say he agape Jesus. Um but at the at the end, Jesus like comes down to his level. And instead of maybe making Peter feel like he wasn't enough or wasn't up to par, Jesus comes down to, oh, so do you flee love me? He's like, Yeah, yeah, you know I do. So yeah, that's just another piece of it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And it's unconditional, right? And Jesus has unconditional love, right? Right. You know, so yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And so the last part of it, um the very last says, Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And then he said to him, Follow me. Which he said, Follow me back at the very beginning.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

When Peter was fishing.

SPEAKER_03

And I'll make you fishers of men.

SPEAKER_01

Jesus came and said, Follow me. And now he's in the same situation and and saying it again. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And it says, Someone will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And you know, some somewhere I read, you know, it's a reference to crucifixion. Right. And I'll stretch out your hands. The story is that he was crucified upside down because he didn't think he was worthy to be crucified as Jesus was.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. So all right, April 30th is Matthew 28, 16 through 20. Uh, this is known as the Great Commission. This is kind of like the last thing Jesus says to them before he goes up to heaven and does not come down in physical form again.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Um, so it says then the eleven disciples, because we know we lost one.

SPEAKER_03

And they haven't replaced him yet.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Um, went to Galilee and to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. It says when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. I don't think I remember seeing that in this passage before.

SPEAKER_05

Right.

SPEAKER_01

So that's kind of interesting. We've got these 11 disciples who've been with Jesus for three years. They have seen him crucified, they've seen him after being crucified, so they knew he was resurrected. And now they're coming here with him, and they doubted.

SPEAKER_03

Um, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, yeah, I mean, it it It's just like in and doubting what?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's that same thing. What's being doubted? Um, but just the whole events can be really difficult to process.

SPEAKER_01

I agreed.

SPEAKER_03

And and whether, I mean, that's doubted here, uh, but just the whole sequence, you know, does it become unbelievable, right? I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

So it says Jesus came to them, and we don't know, did he climb up the mountain? Did he come down from heaven? Did I don't know, but Jesus is there, and basically says, go and make disciples of all nations, and baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, which is what is repeated when people are baptized in church today. And he said, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Obey everything, not some things, not what you want to, but obey everything, and surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um, this says, and again, this is just Google, you know, it's nothing special. Uh some doubted, it it does it highlight, I don't know, that doubt can coexist with worship and faith. You know, so you know, uh, worship is in the moment, faith is in the moment, but you know, maybe faith is that overall, long-term, kind of a time thing. At the moment, you can doubt says that as well. Um, the Greek word can imply hesitation, shock or awe rather than complete disbelief. And and and clearly I could see the awe, shock, or hesitation. You know, we saw, you know, he died. Right. You know, he died. And again, we're having this experience again, right?

SPEAKER_01

And at the with the fish, that was the third time they saw him. So this is the fourth time.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, it's happened, they see it, they understand it, but it's still, you know. And again, these are humans. Right? I always remind myself of that. That's who they are, much like us. And maybe there's times we doubt. And doubt isn't necessarily bad.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Yeah, no, no.

SPEAKER_03

So that wraps up Easter.

SPEAKER_01

Wraps up Easter, wraps up April, and now we go to May, and the the first five have to do with water, and then we venture on to something else, but you know, it's a water theme. It's okay, which is kind of interesting, actually. It shows up because there's some stories as like, oh.

SPEAKER_03

This was a lot about water. I didn't know that was intentional. So good for you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It was our voice when I read it.

SPEAKER_01

So the first one, now we could probably talk forever about the first one. May 1st um is in Genesis 7 and 8, and it's Noah. And I, you know, everyone knows Noah.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Everyone, I even people I think who don't go to church have heard of Noah.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and because there was the movie, the movie, and um you know, two by two everyone knows, you know. And it's also interesting. I mean, is Noah on the Mount Rushmore?

SPEAKER_01

Um you know, if if it weren't for Noah, we'd Wouldn't have everyone after him.

SPEAKER_04

Right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So he's kind of kind of important.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

All right. So here's I warned Steve that I had something special for this week. So um, gosh, I know I don't know that she listens to this or not. But I have one friend from elementary school. Uh, when I was in second grade, um our teacher said we could bring like some music to school and share it. I don't know why. And I had this little 45 of the Irish Rovers singing the unicorn. Now, this is a song all about Noah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And um I it was like my favorite song. I don't know what that says about me being a second grader and loving the Irish Rovers, the Unicorn.

SPEAKER_03

Irish Rovers were pretty big.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, good. Um, so I brought it to school and we played it. I remember we got to dance up and down the aisle. We couldn't get out of our aisles, but we could like kind of scoop back and forth and we we listened to it. Um I I I might try to play just a little bit of it for you. Um, but I looked it up recently because actually I I thought it was someone else who did this. Um, but no, it's just the Irish Rovers are the only ones who claim it. Um go figure. And uh in finding that, I found that they have a second song. I'm not gonna play you the second song. Uh, but the second song is called So the Unicorn talks about why we don't have unicorns today because they didn't make it on the arc.

SPEAKER_03

Right. They were out playing and I think the unicorn's the national animal of Scotland.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Huh. I I did not know that. All right.

SPEAKER_03

That's a very nice feature.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that is better than me singing it.

SPEAKER_03

So uh and the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so this song I always thought it was kind of sad because, you know, as far as you know, the unicorn are dead and they get drowned because the ark is going. But there is the continuing story of the unicorn, that's why it's called, by the Irish Rovers, and it's a song, and this what it says is the unicorns were the narwhals.

SPEAKER_02

Ah.

SPEAKER_01

So now there's all these narwhals in the ocean because they were the unicorns that got left behind. So wow. Nice. So okay. Noah and the arc, we're not gonna go too too deep into this because you know I want most of what you remember from this to be the Irish rovers.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but um And if Irish rover sales go up, I know that we should get some cut of that increase royalties.

SPEAKER_01

So there were seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, one pair of every kind of unclean animal, um, and seven pairs of every kind of bird, and then uh it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. You know, we had rain recently for a few days in a row. I was like, oh my gosh, that would just be too much.

SPEAKER_03

Um yeah, so one, um, we all hear the animals came two by two. Right. They did not. Maybe they did, but there weren't just two elephants, right? You know, so um, and and I don't know this, but I'm assuming two of the clean animals were a pair, and that's who got off the ark. Right? Mm-hmm. The other five pairs were Dinner. Dinner. Feeder animals, and the same thing with birds. I don't know if that's true.

SPEAKER_01

But some of them had to be feeders.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, had to be.

SPEAKER_01

Had to be to because um how long were they on the boat for? Well, so first of all, the my next little note is Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. Hello.

SPEAKER_03

Did all.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And he was an experienced boatmaker?

SPEAKER_01

No, right. No. No.

SPEAKER_03

He was a farmer. He had never built a boat before.

SPEAKER_01

And so it says Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came. By the first day of the first month of Noah's 601st year, the water had dried up from the earth.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So you're on a boat for a long time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. A year?

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah. Yeah, year-ish. Because he's when it first starts, the first month he's already 601. Then when it dries up, he turns 600. Sounds like 602. But still, he was on there.

SPEAKER_01

No, he was 600 and turned 601. Sorry, yeah. Vice versa.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But Genesis outlines, you know, 150 days here, 150. I mean, it's it's much more information. Um, and at the end, you know, the ark was built with essentially a room at the top, a space, a window. Um, I guess a raven, raven, and then the dove came back with a piece of olive branch, which told Noah, things are growing.

SPEAKER_01

Well, so it says um the first day of the first month, the water had dried up. He removed the covering. The 27th day of the second month, it was completely dry. So there's maybe 57 days. Yeah, thank you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Just after all Yeah, from the the ground being dry to the earth was completely dry, that it was, I guess, safe.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, get off. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And and and again, fourth and fifth grade, we talk about the B side of this story. Going back to your 45 with the the B side was the less popular song. They had space, so they put a song occasionally, that became the hit, but yeah, and I don't remember what's on the flip side of the unicorn. Correct. But I'm sure it's good.

SPEAKER_01

I bet you I have it at home.

SPEAKER_03

Well, that's worse. Maybe we'll can report on that next time. Um, but anyway, if you have all these animals, you got a mess.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's the B side. Who who is in charge of cleanup?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Noah's sons.

SPEAKER_03

That's what I was thinking.

SPEAKER_01

Definitely. Yep. So all right. So let's move on to May 2nd.

SPEAKER_03

And for those of us listening in Kentucky, it's Derby. If you're not from Kentucky, the state kind of shuts down on May 2nd. Or the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby.

SPEAKER_01

For a race that lasts how long?

SPEAKER_03

I think it's two minutes, the greatest two minutes in sports or something.

SPEAKER_01

There you go.

SPEAKER_03

Most exciting two minutes in sports.

SPEAKER_01

All right. May 2nd is John chapter 2, verses 1 through 10. So this is at obviously the beginning of the book of John. The beginning of Jesus' ministry, Jesus doing what he's gonna do.

SPEAKER_02

Jesus being Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

And uh this is his first miracle. Um, they are invited to a wedding.

SPEAKER_03

And kind of first miracle under protest.

SPEAKER_01

It it seems that way. Yes. Um, so they're invited to a wedding. His mother is there, and she apparently is close to the family that's having the wedding.

SPEAKER_03

Um and Jesus and his disciples were invited. It's a big, you know, it's a big to-do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And Jesus' mother says to him, they have no more wine. And this is a phrase that I think people take differently. They're not sure how to interpret this. Um, woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Woman doesn't make any sense.

SPEAKER_01

Um well, except I I really did look this up.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe it was common to call your mother woman. Try that now.

SPEAKER_01

Um but that's a phrase. It was a word used. The other place it is used is with But Jesus says my hour it's okay, I did. Um the woman at the well. So the Samaritan woman at the well he calls woman. It's the same word as the one in this story.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_01

Um I don't feel like it's as harsh as people make it sound. Um that's that's a problem of translating.

SPEAKER_03

It also speaks this as his independence from her. He's now an adult. So he can start what his job would be, which is his ministry.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, so it it feels like he's like, okay, I'm not ready to do all this yet. You know, my hour's not yet come. I yeah, doesn't sound like you know I don't know, because he he uses that phrase like the hour has come in his final days.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So maybe his ministry wasn't ready to start, but mom didn't care.

SPEAKER_01

And I love that she she turns to the servants and says, do whatever he tells you, and walks away.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And I mean, she's not worried about his hour.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And so, you know, most people know this story as well. The the thing I love about the story is um what I put up at the top. Who knows where the wine came from?

SPEAKER_03

Servants. Only the servants, only the servants.

SPEAKER_01

So he says to the servants, because no one else is going to be back here where the servants are.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_01

So Jesus is back there, and there's these ceremonial jars.

SPEAKER_03

And that's another good question. Jars. Why is Jesus hanging out with the servants?

SPEAKER_01

Well, because he hung out with everybody. He hung out with everybody. But um, and he's like, fill these with water. So they filled them with water.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I I I don't know what they're thinking. It's like, all right, he said, fill them with wire, we'll fill them with water.

SPEAKER_03

To 20 to 30 gallons.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So 120 to 180 gallons.

SPEAKER_01

It's a lot. I don't know how long it took them to do that. I would think a while. Even if you had a hose running to the case.

SPEAKER_03

You know, fill it up and down.

SPEAKER_01

I'm saying if you had a hose, it would still take a while. Yeah. So anyway, they fill them up to the brim. And then he's like, all right, take some to the master. I wonder if they were afraid. I'm gonna take this water. Uh you take him, this water.

SPEAKER_04

They were wondering, right?

SPEAKER_01

But we know the end of the story. They took it. It was fabulous wine, apparently.

SPEAKER_03

Very good.

SPEAKER_01

And um Jesus did his first miracle right there at wedding.

SPEAKER_03

And at the end, you have saved the best till now. I read that, I'm thinking, is that part of the message we that of Jesus? God has saved the best till now. Here is the best. Pay attention because he's the best.

SPEAKER_01

Nice. I like that. All right, May 3rd, Jeremiah chapter 2, 13 through 19. Um more references to water.

SPEAKER_04

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

So in this, God says that he is the spring of living water.

SPEAKER_02

Living water.

SPEAKER_01

It also says that he is upset with his people.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He says, My people have committed two sins. They've forsaken me.

SPEAKER_03

Can't be good.

SPEAKER_01

They've forsaken me, the spring of living water.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And have dug their own cisterns, which are broken and can't hold water.

SPEAKER_03

So obviously, this is a reference to water. Cisterns is where you got water as well, right? Uh as well, you get that. So you end up that that, you know, part part of the message Jeremiah is giving is uh you forsaken him as evident and you've gone other to worship other places, to get water other places. Maybe you went to worship other gods, right? And they're broken cisterners, they're not gods, right? So I think it's yeah, it's two, and it's kind of acknowledging maybe they're turned away, right? Forsaken would be turning away from God, right? Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

Later on, have you not brought this on yourself by forsaking the Lord your God?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Why go to Egypt? Why go to Assyria to drink? Like right here.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You got it with me, and yet you're going somewhere else. So yeah. Kind of a poetic way of saying it all, but saying what people do all the time. We're we're we try to fix things ourselves, we try to um get solutions to something ourselves. We don't go to God, who's right there, yeah, spring of living water. He's got it all ever flowing, never gonna run out. Probably the best water ever.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And here you are over here doing it yourself. It's not gonna work. Right. Like, why even bother?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. When you forsake the Lord your God, have no awe of me. Meaning, yeah, not impressed. So it's clearly a reprimand.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't want to have this conversation with God.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And you know, that passage from Jeremiah may not have made it in flip devotional without the water reference.

SPEAKER_03

So all right, so water's good. We're pro-water.

SPEAKER_01

All right. May 4th is our last day for this week's podcast. Um, it's from John chapter 4, 1 through 14.

SPEAKER_03

And once again, water and living water.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. I was gonna say, and the story gets split up into two.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it does.

SPEAKER_01

And we have to wait until next week for the rest of the excited. That's right. Oh, just sitting on the edge of your skirt.

SPEAKER_03

Cliffhanger part two. Same time next week.

SPEAKER_01

What's gonna happen?

SPEAKER_03

But I do like right away we go back to Living Water. You know. Again, a connection between the Old and New Testament, another linkage between the two. And you know, some people I know who are Christians and love Jesus think the New Testament is what it's all about.

SPEAKER_01

And think that's all you need. Yeah. Why do you need the Old Testament? Because when Jesus came, it was a new covenant, it was a new everything. So all we need is the New Testament.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Right? But no, no, there's foundational information and yeah, references so much to glean from and a great relationship that shows you how what God is like throughout the Old Testament.

SPEAKER_03

And then so yeah, I think it's important.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So we have Jesus and his disciples are walking along, um, they are going through Samaria, and Jesus sits down and sends the disciples into town to get some food.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they they went to Bucky's.

SPEAKER_01

And he is at Jacob's well. It says he was tired from the journey.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I I find that interesting because he did lots of journeys. He did lots of lots of things. I don't remember it being referred to any other place where it says tired.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So um, and a Samaritan woman came up to draw water at noon, which was not the time.

SPEAKER_03

You would not draw it at noon. One, it's gonna be hotter, and two, you need water for the whole day. Why would you go at noon? And she went at noon so as not to be bothered. Not to be talked about, not to be seen by other people. So I think that's part of it. It's also um the Samarians and the Jews, Israelites, didn't get along. You know, almost to the point, I think it's some reference somewhere else, it was suggested they walk around Samaria.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

And that's why the story of the good Samaritan is so significant and for that time so cutting to the Pharisee and whoever the other person was, both Jewish leaders, right? So it's that so they didn't have that. Um the Israelites didn't think the Samarians were Jewish, they thought they were kind of maybe Jewish in some other race mixed together. Other thing is, at one point, you know, there were 12 tribes, and then there was a split. Judah was really the one the tribe of Judah, the Levites were there, but the other ten tribes were the northern, that was Samaria. So there was a split, there was tension between those two at times. So the use of Samaria and a Samaritan woman, one, he's speaking to a woman, that's probably not protocol, not acceptable. And two, uh, why would a Jew speak to a Samarian? Just wouldn't happen. So that's kind of the background. And as she says, you are a Jew, and I'm a Samaritan woman. Right? So again, I'll give you living water.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um she refers to our father Jacob a couple of times, uh, which is kind of interesting that she would keep throwing that out. It's like uh Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well Jacob was the father of the twelve tribes, right?

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Right, you know, and they went to Egypt, had twelve sons, two wives, two maidservants, you know, Joseph was one of the sons, Levi was a son, right? Jacob changed his name to Israel, right? So they still think Jacob is, I guess, marrying that is the most important. And the Israelites do not. They they may from an earthly leader, I don't know this, but they may align with Moses.

SPEAKER_01

So maybe she's throws Jacob out there to show that they do have a tie into um being Jewish?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I mean some relationship there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Um and then Jesus says the water I give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. I I find the verb choice interesting in this. You know, going back to my elementary school, shout out to Capitol Day School in Frankfurt.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um home of the uh Irish Rovers.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. They were very strong in teaching um grammar. I learned to dissect sentences and uh big time. So anyway, the verb choice here is in the future, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So it's yeah, water again and the importance of water. Live in a desert, water is pretty important.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and as we know nowadays, water is so important, hence all the water bottle type purchases you can do. Yeah, and apparently you can't go more than 20 minutes without drinking water. How we survived growing up with basically no water, I do not know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And the message will have eternal life. That's gotta be confusing. I mean, we know what it means.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

You know, but Samaritan woman doesn't know.

SPEAKER_01

You would think not.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

All right.

SPEAKER_03

It's a good deal. I think this the water theme makes sense.

SPEAKER_01

So you can sit on the edge of your seat till next week to hear the rest of the story of the woman at the well.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And just a reminder that on um where? Oh, on the podcast, when you pull them up, you can see all the scripture references that we are talking about during that podcast. So if you don't have the flip devotional book, you can pull that up. You can read the verses ahead of time. Um, you can do it so many different ways. But all the scripture verses are there uh for you, so you can be a part of this as much as someone with the book.

SPEAKER_05

Right.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Okay, thanks for listening to this week's Flip Devotional of the Podcast. Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, download, share, do everything you can do with a podcast. Um, and we'll see you next week.
