And don't forget to subscribe and hit that notification bell and like this video. Thank you guys so much for all your continued support. It really does mean the world. In today's episode, we're going to be talking about trailer signs and labeling things and setting up rules for the customers and that kind of thing. And the reason this came up is because I posted a video not too long ago, and I had a whole bunch of people like, you need to put a basically the video was I was reorganizing the toolbox and I was doing things, and somebody said you need to put a sign in there that says to do this or that, you know, with the straps or with the whatever, you know, whatever it is. And the thing is, uh, from what I've learned, I'm gonna I'm gonna break down in this episode what I've learned and why signs are good, why signs don't matter at the same time, uh, and and typically what happens in these overall experiences. So my first experience with putting signs on the trailers that were meant to prevent something from happening was my fenders on my very first car hauler. I didn't know what I didn't know, and I bought a very inexpensive car hauler, the cheapest thing out there, honestly. And I put uh signs on the fenders, they were just those really basic, cheap uh sheet metal fenders that had the you know teardrop style fenders, I guess is what they're called. I don't know, something like that. And um they're very, very easily dented. Well, I put these signs, they're about this big, they're they're a pretty decent size. I got them on Amazon and it said, do not step here, right? And so I did that thinking it would prevent it. I've put those on top of toolboxes before. I've I've put signs inside of inside of the lid of the toolboxes that say uh, you know, please reorganize and roll straps and you know, uh keep the toolboxes presentable as when you found it, different verbiage like that. And what I've found is that customers ignore these signs a lot. And I'm gonna explain to you guys why buying a better quality trailer and having a better process is really the contingency plan for when customers ignore these signs. Now, I've seen some of y'all setups, I've even seen the U-Haul setups on like their brand new auto hauler, where it shows, you know, the it goes over the 60-40 rule with loading a vehicle and all that kind of stuff. And that's great. Uh, I mean, there are some customers that do need that help and that will see that. Awesome. That's the 10%. You know, 10% of your customers I think are going to be great. Um, but you're not buying the trailer for that 10%. You're buying it for the 90% that aren't going to read or your signs or or you know adhere to your your warnings and your rules. And the the thing that I thought was the most funny in my first dose of this, I guess, was I had these do not step here signs that I would put on the fenders and on the toolbox, and I shit you not, the trailer would come back with footprints on the sign. And I'm just like, I mean, I've made videos about it, you guys have probably seen them, and it's just unreal. It's unreal how uh you know it's it's just crazy. Either they don't respect the equipment or your rules, or they just weren't paying attention and didn't care. Whatever it is, the stuff happens, all right. So when I post a video of things happening, whatever people put a sign on there, da da da. This is why I kind of stopped buying signs. I shouldn't say I stopped buying signs. I'm not nearly as strict as I used to be with myself um regarding keeping all the equipment like labeled and all this kind of stuff. I'll kind of go over things with people, but um when it comes to uh the signs, I'm not even surprised anymore when stuff happens or when a toolbox comes back and it's just in disarray because they didn't see the sign of, you know, hey, be sure that the toolbox is reorganized and reset before you bring it back, yada yada yada. Um so one of the biggest things, all right. So the reason you would put a sign on something, number one, of course, yeah, the the one the when it comes to the organizational stuff, that makes total sense, keep things organized. But a lot of them are maybe you have your air pressure on the side fender, um the side of the fender next to the tires, showing people what it is so they don't have to look at the sidewalls or just guess at it, right? A lot of people don't understand. Trust me, I I know this firsthand. I spent many, many years in the industry. Most people have no idea what to set trailer tires to. In fact, we see it come up in the group quite a bit where people just they they ask the question, what do you guys, what air pressure are you guys running in your trailer tires? Not a lot of people will know. Well, a lot of people know, but a lot of people don't know. Okay. And so, you know, I've seen people put stickers, and I used to, you know, the 90 PSI or whatever it is that I've depending on the tire, of course, in the trailer, I'd put it right there next to the tires. And I guess it helps. You know, maybe people see that, maybe that helps. Um, I've seen where I put them on the fender, and the reason why I would do that is to ensure that the fenders aren't going to get damaged, whatever. The reason that we put these things on there is to prevent these things. You know, if you have a trailer and there's a ton of areas where you're having to put stickers and signs on, and I learned this firsthand, because things might get damaged, things might get messed up, whatever it is. I've found buying a better quality trailer or bulletproofing the one you have now, whether it be, you know, welding or beefing up the welds in a certain area, replacing the angle iron ramps with C channel ramps, um, you know, whatever, whatever it is, you know, relocating your spare tire mounts, resupporting the spare tire mount, whatever it is. Um, there's all kinds of things that we can do to bulletproof the trailers, but when you buy a better quality trailer right out of the gate, your need for these signs goes way down. Okay. They they hold up way better. There's so much more benefit to getting a better quality trailer, especially early on in the business. I mean, and the reason I say early on is you can get discouraged pretty easily when you start handling damages left and right, right out of the gate, like I did. Um it could certainly happen, especially if you don't know what you don't know. You don't realize that a better quality trailer is going to save you a ton of headaches. And whenever we recommend like drive over fenders and things like that, sure, a big part of that is to get a much larger um customer base because you can, you know, you can haul bigger, wider vehicles, whatever. But one of the biggest things with that, for me personally, anyway, is there's way less damage when it comes to fenders. Fenders, as y'all know, if you've been following trailer hustle for or just me and any for any length of time, you know I've had to replace fenders like crazy, drives me nuts, it's expensive. Customers hate buying them, I hate buying them, I hate doing it. It's not fun. It's been my it's been my biggest hassle and headache when it comes to damages and repairs. So you never have to worry about that, really. Not not never, but uh, you know, you truly, really aren't gonna have to worry about it if you have driveover fenders. Um, so so that's that's great. But one of the, for the most part, by and large, when you get a trailer with driveover fenders, and this is another big reason why we recommend them, for like your starter trailer, even, and to throw a little bit more money at it when you first get started, is because the companies that make trailers with driveover fenders, they tend to kind of give you better quality everything else. Not necessarily everything, and not every time, of course. I know there's there's companies that make them, and the rest of their trailers is like, oh, this is dog shit, you know. Whatever, I get it, it happens. But but by and large, most of these companies that make trailers with drive over fenders will typically have better welds, um, better factory welds. They usually are gonna have better quality ramps. They don't a lot of them don't use angle iron, they use uh C channel, or they'll use like square tube steel uh sides with angle iron uh supports in the middle, uh tracks, I guess you want to call them. Um usually the spare tire mounts are in better locations and usually better supported. Um, so they're not gonna they're not gonna break as easily. And a lot of them also have better uh factory features and additional features that you have as options. Um there's there's so many more. Uh shoot, most of them even have more screws in each deck board, you know, two two screws per um per plank versus one. I mean, there's all kinds of little things that you get better when you get a trailer with driveover fenders for the most part. And you gotta kind of have to know what to look for. And this is especially important when we're throwing these heavier duty tires on these things and we're putting these 12, 14 ply tires in these trailers. What happens when you do that? You guys, I know most of you have noticed this. You you pick up a trailer, you buy it, maybe it has the factory 10 plies, which we know are BS, you know, they're they're terrible tires, usually, they're the cheapest things to throw on there for the most part. And it just drives great on the way home. You're like, man, this is excellent, right? Well, what happens as soon as you replace those with those 12 or 14 plies? The trailer gets stiff. It gets hard as a rock when you're pulling it. Now, when you get a load on there, it pulls like a dream, of course. But the big thing is you're now you're now making it to where it's gonna not absorb things near as much. Everything you hit is a is a below, it's an impact. You're shaking the thing to death, not shaking from like vibrations and I'll balance your trailer tires, guys. It still drives me nuts when people say don't balance trailer tires. Anyway, look at my very first podcast episode. The first episode for me was about balancing trailer tires, so you understand it's important to me. Anyway, the trailer gets very stiff, and what happens when that happens? Um, well, the factory welds can start to crack a little easier. It's funny, a lot people, a lot of talk trash about a lot of factory, well, trash factory welds. It's like, yeah, maybe they just did it really quick. Maybe the QC wasn't really where it needed to be. But we also modified this trailer in a way that it's getting way more abuse than it normally would. So we gotta we gotta give some some grace there. But when you put these 14-ply tires, the thing stiffens up like crazy and everything can start to break. You put a 14-pley tire on that spare mount, you're now adding how much more weight onto that thing, and on top of that, you're adding how much more, you know, impact force, if you want to call it that, or vibrations, or not vibrations, but um, you know, when you do hit a pothole or you do go over a curb, it's not absorbing anything, not near as much as it was before. So when you're running a higher air pressure and all that stuff, so you know, you have to bulletproof a lot of things on the trailers, but when you get a better quality trailer out of the gate, a lot of these things are non-issues, um, or less of an issue, I should say. So it's it's certainly worth it. And that'll also prevent you from having to use as many signs. Sure, you still want to have probably, you know, something to show air pressure, makes it easy for the customer. You might want to have something that's just a reminder to roll your straps up. But you have to remember people don't look at them, people don't care, people forget. You know, it happens all the time. I just had uh my um uh one of my eight and a half by 2014 case come back. No straps in the toolbox, they're just gone. I hit them up and uh and luckily he was very good about it, he was cool about it. He was like, oh my God, is yep, they're in my buddy's truck on their way to Charleston, South Carolina. I'm like, well, I got somebody picking this thing up tomorrow, like, you know, can get them back to me tonight. He's like, no, it might be two weeks. I'm like, can I just charge you for them? Are you cool with that, man? Like, I'll work with you. He says, Yeah, go ahead and charge them. I'll just keep these. He's like, Great. So I charge him for the straps, order some new straps, do some other ones in the toolbox that I already had. So stuff happen. And by the way, in that toolbox, it's please, you know, uh roll and organized toolbox, whatever it's it is that I have written in there. So people get caught up in their stuff, people are in a rush, you know. It is what it is. A lot of people have never towed before. Um, so they don't really understand the etiquette, they don't understand a lot of these things, whatever. It is what it is. Um, but it's very important to understand, guys, that signs aren't your end-all, be all. You still have to do a lot of things to these trailers to have them ready for uh for rentals. And also, even though you do put signs on, people are going to ignore them. That that sign that says don't step here will come back with footprints on it. So don't get all bent out of shape. It's gonna happen. Okay, people aren't being disrespectful or rude or anything. People just they they're in their own little worlds, you know. Maybe some people are and they just they don't respect your stuff. But I don't know. I think that's rare. I think it's mostly just people in a rush just doing things and um, you know, that kind of thing. If you're running a trailer rental business and you're still doing everything manually or using a software that's really confusing or complicated and gives you zero control over even your own information, you're making it harder and way more frustrating than it needs to be. So, what I what do I use? I use big rentals, and honestly, it's one of the best additions I've made to my business. Far better than all these little bitty things I like to do. It's huge, it makes a huge difference in the in the business. They've got a marketplace that brings in customers without you having to chase every little lead. And on top of that, their rental software handles everything all in just one place. Okay, it's not a bunch of plugins and this and that. Your customers can book, upload their uh driver's license and insurance, sign your rental agreement, pick their dates, pay. All of that is done in one very smooth process. It takes people from just browsing to actually locking in a rental without any of the friction that you would get with other platforms potentially. And on your side of things, it keeps everything very organized and very easy to manage. So if you ever want to make changes, it's simple. You can adjust your pricing, you can restructure how you collect deposits, you can send out custom bookings and invoices and see what's coming in and out literally at a quick glance. It tells you what's coming out, what's coming in. It's it's awesome. Uh, very easy. So Big Realms makes it easy to stay in control without overcomplicating or over-automating your system, which, yes, you can over-automate this thing. On top of that, if you need a website, they build fully customized websites that are integrated into your system, and they do it for less than pretty much anyone out there. So, whether you've got one trailer or 30 trailers, this is the kind of setup that helps you grow without any without adding an additional headache. It's built from the ground up for rentals, not a third-party system where it's white labeled and has limitations, and they just kind of make it work for rentals, and it was designed for something else. This is for rentals. So if you want to check it out, click the link down in the description and get a demo and see how switching to big rentals can make your life and your business easier than ever. You're not really able to fix your customer behavior, you know what I mean? So, really, I just kind of look at, you know, build around the customer behavior. And I I've said this plenty of times, but when I'm talking to manufacturers, right, and I've toured a bunch of places, and it's funny, everybody has kind of their thing where they point it out and they're like, they're like, Yeah, we do that, yeah, and they're all proud of it, you know. And I'm like, customers gonna break that. They're like, what? What are you talking about? I'm like, that shit's gonna break, you know. If it, you know, when we buy these trailers, if it was our trailers, sure, great, no problem. But as y'all know, and if you don't know, I'll tell you, customers will find a way to break everything on that trailer. It could be the most kick-ass thing in the world that the manufacturer does, and they say our trailers are rugged and heavy duty because we da da da da da da da da da. Customers gonna break that too. Okay. So you know, a lot of this is just kind of it happens. Okay, there's not a whole lot you can do about it. It is what it is. So you can't fix your behavior, you can just build around it. And it is funny when I, you know, we look at things from a totally different lens. You know, we look at it from the perspective of a trailer renter and what will and won't break and all that. So the things you beef up might be that one thing that the manufacturer was all proud of. They're like, oh yeah, look at the way we do this with our welds. And we're like, all right, I'm gonna weld a support piece right there, just so you know. What? What are you talking about? Yeah, it's gonna break. So, you know, you learn all that little by little as you go and as you get reps. And of course, it also is gonna be different, you know, for each piece of equipment you have. You know, I've owned a good amount of trailers over the years, well before I rented as well. And I know a lot of you guys have a bunch of trailers and been around trailers for a long time. At a certain point, you kind of get to the point where you're you're really confident and you can look at a trailer, look at certain things, and say, okay, I'm gonna need to do this here, I'm gonna need to beef that up, I'm gonna need to do this, I'm gonna need to do that, you know. And we do that automatically when we're looking at it, like, oh, I'm gonna put a winch on, I'm gonna put a toolbox, ooh, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that. You kind of need to do the same thing when it comes to bulletproofing it and and building it up, you know, because every failure point on that trailer, every failure point is a future repair bill. Okay. And it's potentially days or weeks where the trailer's not in circulation, not being rented. So you really have to identify that stuff as early on as you can and fix those things as early as you can before they break. Um, it really, really makes a big difference when you do that kind of stuff. Um, you know, and it could be something to do with your wiring. I mean, we we see wires get messed up all the time, you know. Maybe re-rent, you know, I've rewired an entire trailer when I first bought the thing just because I was like, this is junk. Everything else on the trailer is awesome. Why would they do this with the wiring? You know, whatever. Um, so whatever you get, just give it a great once or twice over, you know, crawl all over the thing. And if you are a current renter, you should already kind of know a lot of the things that happen. If you're not, you know, ask around, ask in the group, watch some of these videos, watch other videos, plenty of good content out there. Um, but just understand you're gonna want to beef this thing up and start start, you know, checking your stuff out. And I just bought this uh Wear Cargo uh 7x16 um from a local guy here, one of my buddies, and he um or in that that trailer is it's actually pretty pretty stout for what it is and for the price point, but there's like three or four really small things where I'm like, that just doesn't make any sense why they would build it that way. So it's you know, they they kind of they wanted to beef things up here, but then they sacrifice things here, and it is what it is. So you just have to pay attention, crawl over them, and you know, fix the things that are important to you and that you think are gonna be problems with customers or think have the potential to be, it's gonna do nothing but make it last longer and and protect your investment longer. And keeping trailers for longer is extremely, extremely important, guys. If you buy a cheap trailer, clearly you're not gonna have that near as long as if you buy a more expensive trailer. There's two mindsets to this. I was actually talking with a uh a friend the other day on the phone about this. There's two mindsets. One of them is just get the cheapest trailers out there, people are gonna beat them up. The other mindset, and this is my mindset, is uh let me get better quality shit, and that way it holds up better to customers trying to beat it up, you know? And everything from even my PJs, even though they've I feel like the quality has changed a little bit um over the years, but like my PJs, they they hold up pretty damn good. My cheaper trailers didn't. Okay, and it's not like I'm renting only my trash trailers to the people that look scummy. I mean, I I don't I don't discriminate there. It's like, hey, just yeah, this is what's available, take it. And sure, different things have happened to different trailers, but the wear and tear on these other trailers is just it's just ridiculous, man. And most of mostly it's just the amount of repairs and the amount of beefing up I have to do on a consistent basis is just unreal. So I will never buy cheap trailers ever again. I will always get good brands, not necessarily good brands, but well-made trailers. Um, because uh it's that's that's just that's just how I'm gonna roll because I've I've seen too much. You know what I mean? So every repair is downtime and lost revenue, and uh, I want to get better trailers that are not gonna have near as much um issues like that. So, and of course, the better quality trailer, better the review. You know, a lot of customers they understand, like, man, it's nice and new. I mean, how many reviews do you guys get where a customer talks about how nice the trailers were and all that? Um, you know, it's it's just it's just good all around. Just good all around. So you kind of have to build your business assuming that customers aren't gonna listen, customers aren't gonna read when it comes to the signs. Okay. I've also sent videos. So I shouldn't, and by the way, somebody really, really, really gave me hell the other day about the way I talk about my customers. Clearly, I'm not talking about all of my customers. I'm talking about customers in general, all right? People in general, people do dumb stuff, okay? Whatever business you're in, if you've ever dealt with customers before, or just your coworkers, these are human beings. People make mistakes, people forget things, people don't do what they say they're going to do. I got a whole episode planned around that. Oh my gosh, that's gonna be a two-hour episode, probably. People don't do what they say they're gonna do. People, people are overly confident in their little bit of skill set they have with something. You know, these things happen, okay? So, you know, don't get all pissy with me when we talk about when I talk about my customers and and stuff like that. But I will send a very detailed video. It's usually about two and a half minutes when I do my contactless rentals, okay? It'll be a very good audio quality video, very detailed video walk around where I say, hey, this is the house you're gonna be pulling up to. Here's the part of the property that you pull up to, here's the trailer you're gonna be getting, here's the coupler size, here's how the coupler works, here's how the chains operate, here's the pin you put in there, here's where you put the wire into the truck, here's how the wiring harness sits inside the little pin right there. That way it prevents some of the slack from flopping around, whatever. Here's how the brake uh disc brakeway uh you know cable works. You hook it to the vehicle, not to the chains. Here's how the jack works, here's how the drop leg works, here's what you should do when you pick up, here's what you should do when you drop off, here's how the winch works, here's the cable for the winch, here's the two buttons on the cable, here's where the ramps are, here's how you take them out, here's how you set them up, here's how you put them back, here's how you put the pins back. If you have to adjust this, here's how you do it. If you have to adjust that, here's how you do it. It's a very, very specific video, okay? And it's very simple. Guys, this is easy stuff. This is not rocket science, okay? These are the most basic things on the road, you know, these trailers. So, but I'll still see on my cameras the same person that says I've been towing for you, I've been towing since before you were glimmering your daddy's eye. You know, I like them French fried potatoes. Mm-hmm. Shouldn't talk like that. You just the boy. Oh, sorry, I broke into. My uh Billy Bomb Thornton Sling Blade voice there. But some of these guys that are just so confident in their abilities, it's like those are the guys that show up, usually in a messed up truck, and they either have the wrong size ball, or maybe they got the right size ball, but then they don't understand how the drop leg works, or they go to leave while the drop leg's still down, or they say, Oh, I don't have enough clearance, I don't understand, da-da-da. Or they don't, you know, hook the chains up properly, or they you ever seen those really creative wrap-around techniques people have with the chains? That shit is hilarious to me. Anyway, whatever. But it's always the same kind of guys that have no idea, no idea. And I send them a detailed how-to video. I'm talking detailed, and I recommend you guys make them. They're still good to have. A lot of customers use them and it's great. But even though it's perfect, I'm telling you guys, customers will still mess up, they will still do things wrong. So, you know, we can put all the safeguards we want in place. It's just, it's just reality, guys. Customers are gonna mess stuff up and not know what to do. It is what it is, okay? Um, just like we do with our business, you know, we could watch a video on how to do something and we still mess it up. It happens. It's frustrating, sure. And I know it's even more frustrating because we're sitting here watching the customer fumble with our stuff and and mess up something, you know, but it it is it is what it is. So the big takeaway here is choose equipment that's gonna be able to take the beating. All right. Put all your safeguards in place. Can't hurt, right? But don't be upset when they don't work because in reality they just don't always work. And if you do get a trailer that requires a lot of up uh upgrades, they're not really upgrades, but some bulletproofing, take the time and bulletproof it. Don't say I'll fix it when the you know, when the customer breaks it. Do it ahead of time because guaranteed a customer's gonna break it at a very inopportune moment. Okay. You know, you're gonna have somebody that's on their way back or on their way to pick it up an hour after it's dropped off, you're like, crap, I have no time to fix this thing. Get the stuff done ahead of time and and um you know, make sure it's gonna be a non-issue. Uh, so very important, guys. So get better quality trailers, guys. Get better quality trailers if your budget allows. If your budget doesn't allow, okay, fine, but be prepared. Damage is gonna happen a little bit more, or you're gonna have to beef a lot of things up early on. It is what it is, okay? And I know some people are gonna listen to this and say, what are you talking about, man? I got no problems. I buy used trailers and I do this and I do this. Okay, that's great, man. That's great. It's not been my experience, and all I can talk to y'all about is my experience. So it is what it is. Um, but anyway, but that's the episode today, guys. Trailer Hustle app, man, you guys have been downloading like crazy. We uh we're approaching uh 200 new accounts since we relaunched, what, a week and a half ago? Something like that. So thank you guys. I know there's been some new updates that have been happening, there's been updates like every single week. As we get bug fixes, I'm I'm relaunching. So I'll get a I'll get like you know eight or nine small little bug fixes or little feature changes or something, submit it, and then boom, new update. Um, and then if I get a bunch more, boom, new update. I'm pretty sure we have one update left in us. They they fixed a whole bunch of things. I was having some issues loading the map. Like when you first open up the app, um, the the map just wouldn't load. You have to click like giveaways or something and go back to the map and then what it loads so it's kind of weird. Something wasn't processing right, but they fixed all that, and there's a bunch of little things, all got fixed up. Um, but guys, be sure to add your trailers. A lot of you guys are making accounts, nobody's really adding trailers. Um, there's a lot of tools when you do that, and it's gonna help a lot too with our reviews. So be sure to review your trailers too. We want to know what you think about your own equipment. It's all gonna get added to a big database so we can keep track of it and people can make better buying decisions. And um, yeah, I'm I'm excited about it. Go check the video that I made. I made a really quick video talking about adding your trailers and all the things you can do. It's uh, I think a minute and 10 seconds or a minute and 20 seconds, guys. Watch it. Um, I posted it on the trailer hustle um uh Facebook page as well. So go check that out. Uh but aside from that, guys, thank you again for being here. I really appreciate it. Um, I'm gonna be um out of town. I have uh planned a vacation. I haven't been on vacation in a very, very, very long time. And uh it's funny, you would think like, oh, you're self-employed, you'd be able to go on all these vacations. I get a lot of time and I have a lot of freedom. However, getting away for like a week and a half, that's very tough for me because yeah, I will have my phone on me. I'll be still working while I'm on vacation, but these videos might be fewer and farther between. So uh it is what it is. Um, but aside from that, guys, thank you again for being here.
