In today's episode, we're talking about renting trailers while you're on vacation. We're going to be going over some of our brand partners and their booth locations at NATDA and a few more fun things, including customer speeding with my trailers while they are on rental. Let's get into it. What's up, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Trailer Hustle Podcast. My name is Justin, and this is the Trailer Owners Network. I'm very glad that you guys are here with me today. It's been actually a couple of weeks since uh something got uploaded. So I was gone. I tried to film a whole bunch of stuff and have it ready to go, um, like to have it ready for, I guess, to pre-upload, and I just I ran out of time. I was trying to get some stuff done. See if I can lower this thing down here and still get okay audio. Um, but I was trying to get some stuff done ahead of time, and it just kind of you know didn't didn't work out the way I wanted to, but you know, one of those things. Um couple of quick things that that happened recently. You know, we did launch the Trailer Hustle Trivia. That was pretty cool. Before we get into the main part of the show, I'll just announce a few things. Trailer Hustle Trivia is officially live in the app, and it has been a lot of fun watching people um, you know, answer their question, answer the questions. Uh, and and also, you know, and watching people climb the leaderboards. One of the things that is kind of cool is I didn't re-there's there's a handful of things that I didn't realize were as unknown, I guess, as as they are. There's, you know, I get to see all the stats and everything as far as what questions are missed more than others and you know, stuff like that. And there's some things that I yeah, I I thought um I thought would be no-brainers, and some people had some trouble with them. So it's it's cool because it lets me know here's some of the educational pieces maybe that I could work on uh to better improve my own understanding of certain things, as well as um educational things that I could put out there for you know to help you guys and vice versa, and then get conversations started on these things so that way they're not as um uh, you know, uh put it at the forefront of thought and conversation so more people get educated on it. But we've got some people that have been very, very, very good. We had a few people in like the top three spots, the top four or five spots actually that kind of bounced around a little bit at first. Consistency is key, guys. Going back every day and answering the daily question really, really keeps you uh on board. But I don't know if you can see us to see if I can, you know. So we've got some serious uh, you know, people on oh my god, I gotta trim my nails. How long anyway? We've got some serious um people on here, man. Whiskey River uh rentals is uh killing it. They're at almost 3,000 points. Uh really, actually, only 35 points behind them is E and B trailer rental, and then uh a few hundred points behind them is Lakeside trailer rental. So um it's it's pretty cool. So we've got uh all kinds of cool things planned for the trivia. We've got some awesome prizes for the trivia as well. Like uh first place is gonna be winning a um an automotive jump starter, second place is gonna be winning an impact socket set, and third place will be winning a trailer hustle swag pack. So we've got all kinds of cool stuff like that happening um for that. And I'm sure as we get into more and more of the trivia um month to month, we're gonna end up having more and better prizes for them, as well as um, there's a handful of companies we're talking to that might want to sponsor a trivia where the trivia will be about their company or their products or their industry um or their services, whatever you want to call it. And uh they'll be the ones that'll sponsor the first and or second place prize. So uh so that's all really cool. Now, quick announcement. I will be at NATDA. Uh I'm gonna be going there and hanging out with a handful of people. Adam from Ride Dog is gonna be coming and hanging out with us. Um, a few of our other partners are coming out, but uh I want to give you guys the booth numbers to some of our other partners. So if you're gonna be out there checking out the show, I want you to go say hey to these guys and let them know that Trailer Hustle sent you out there, um, that you're a part of the community and tell them who you are and all that and network with them. So, first of all, Precision Harness. Precision harness is gonna be out there. Uh, they're actually sponsoring me to go out there, which is cool. They're like, hey man, you want to come out? I'm not always gonna go out anyway, but they're like, no, no, we'll take care of you, come out and uh, you know, shoot some video, hang out with us for a little bit. So that's really cool. Thank you again, Precision Harness, for that. I did just post some videos yesterday showing off their products because I just had to install yet another one of their products on another trailer. And um it's it's great. So be sure to check the links below for all these companies, especially Precision Harness. It'll take you straight to their Amazon store so you guys can get their products. Uh, but they're gonna be booth 3037. Precision Harness is booth 3037 at NETDA. Um, next from there is going to be Gen Y. Now, Gen Y Hitch, they're one of the newer brand partners of Trailer Hustle, but man, they've they've been amazing to work with the last few months. Be sure, same thing, check down the link to the uh description below because there's gonna be a um an exclusive discount code for Gen Y products. Uh so if you're in the market for anything, check that link and of course check the um the discount code that they give you, which is Gen Y Hustle 10, I believe. All caps, all one word. Um, but they're gonna be booth 2424, so 2424. And uh thank you again, Gen Y for being an awesome partner of Trailer Hustle last several months and uh looking forward to continuing to work with you guys. You've been great. Um, and then of course the uh big rentals, um those guys are gonna be out there, booth number 820. Also, if you want to get information or get a demo about the big rentals software or the big rentals marketplace, whatever it is, if you are running a trailer rental business or even equipment rental, um, they are who you want to talk to. Check the links below, click that, schedule an appointment to talk to them. They'll know you came from trailer hustle if you use that link. Um, and that is booth 820. So they're gonna be out there hanging out as well. Um, but as I'm floating around, if you guys see me, please say hey, I'd love to meet you guys and love to hang out and and you know, chop it up with you for a few. Uh, I'm gonna be uh out there, I don't even know what days, but uh nonetheless, the main, the the main day, which I think is the second, September 2nd, I'll be floating on the show pretty much the whole day, and then I'll be hitting the road on the third. I don't think I'm gonna go to the show on the third. I might, uh, but we'll see. Um, just depends on how everything shapes up. Um, I got a long drive. So um so guys, uh let's get into this episode. So uh being gone on vacation has uh I don't I don't do that very often. If I go somewhere, it's usually because I'm meeting up with a dealership or I'm going to a manufacturing center to you know get an education on their products or whatever. I very rarely take like true vacation where it's like I leave and it's just vacation. Even when I do that and it's just vacation, as you guys know, being entrepreneurs that are watching this most likely, you know there's no such thing as a true vacation. I mean, if you have this on you, you're pretty much working, right? Um it really never stops. But there was a bunch of things I tried to get done before my vacation. Um, and and um a lot of that was uh, you know, because shooting content is kind of a part of my job, so I have to shoot content. I want to make content on behalf of the companies that I work with, um, as well as continue to get stuff out there and keep the algorithms liking me on YouTube and TikTok and Instagram and Facebook and you know, X and all that stuff. By the way, I just made an X account. I've never had one before, but if you're on X, please go follow. Um it's uh you know just at trailer hustle, just like everything else. Um but um yeah, so there's a lot of things that I try and get done. You know, number one, you gotta, of course, run through all your trailers, make sure that your trailers are um, you know, it's it's a good idea to just do like kind of a big service on all on everything, make sure everything's tip top perfect because I'm not gonna be there to handle things right out of the gate if something happens. Um, luckily for me, I do have my brother right across the street. I've got uh other family around, I've got buddies that do trailer repair. I've got all of you amazing people in the trailer hustle community that I could reach out to if there was an emergency, but I still do go through the trailers, make sure everything is as excuse me, everything is as perfect as possible. And um really just run through everything, checking all the straps, make sure all the pins are there. Um, excuse me, make sure the drop legs are on the right settings, you know, and I run full contactless anyway, so a lot of these things I do regardless, but again, I just I really I put heavy eyes on everything more than normal. I just I run through everything. And that also gives me an opportunity to fix little things that I haven't caught yet or whatever. Um so anyway, so I go through all that, and then I of course film as much content as I can ahead of time, podcasts, whatever it is, and then I schedule that stuff to go out. Um, and then of course I make sure that the people that are my lifelines, such as my brother, if he needs to help out with something, I make sure that he is available uh to do things uh in the event that I need them done. Um and then, of course, having a proper system in place. I use Big Rantal software as of now, and it's it's been great, and it makes everything very easy to um, you know, to operate with. So I would highly recommend having a proper system in place if you're gonna go on vacation and continue to run trailers and that kind of thing. Um of course, you know, running through and checking tire pressure and making sure there's no flat spots or anything crazy. I also set things out for the customers because normally if I'm if I'm close by and there's a problem, I can just run out and help them out. But like say somebody shows up and they don't have the right size hitch or whatever, maybe they thought they were prepared and they weren't. I make sure that I have things in very specific spots out there where I can, if the customer hits me up, I can say, hey, look to your left, see that white shop, look right there, blah, blah, blah. You'll see what you need, you'll see this, you'll see that. Um, you know, extra straps, um, you know, hitches and um, you know, different size balls, drop hitches, stuff like that's all pretty close by. Same with like ramp extensions and all that. I have them all protected and close by in case people need them. So I prep and prepare all that kind of stuff before I go on vacation uh and on a trip. And uh yeah, I mean that's that's pretty much um all there is to it. I mean, you if you're running contactless anyway, that's pretty much all there is to it. Now, if you're not running contactless, it could definitely be a little more, you know, you don't you don't want to go contactless when you're not in town. I I don't think that's the smartest place to um decide, hey, I'm gonna go on vacation and I'm gonna go ahead and go contactless while I do that. Go go contactless first, kind of get some reps in. That that's my recommendation anyway. Um, you know, get some reps in, and I think we'll uh, you know, that way when you do go on vacation, you're more prepared for what might come up while you're gone because you've experienced it before. Um, so it's it's a it's a best practice to get some reps in beforehand. And the same goes, and I've talked about this before, but it's the same thing for if you're planning on starting a rental company or you know, getting into the business and you want to be contactless, that's great. It's it's very freeing, it's it's excellent. I've had very few issues, it's been way more good than bad with going contactless. And um I recommend it for everybody. It's great, it's awesome. But personally, even though some people have started off contactless, never had any problems, you know, and that's that's great. I still always recommend it's still a good idea to get into the business for six months, 12 months, whatever it is, get plenty of reps under your belt, see the things that you don't really know yet to prepare for. Um, you know, people showing up with the wrong equipment or the wrong truck that they said or the you know stuff that doesn't work, or people have a hard time with one or two specific things with hooking up your particular trailer or whatever it is. There's things you just don't know yet to prepare for. Um, you can make all the lists you want, but until it actually happens in real world, you really don't know, like, hey, uh, I need to plan a contingency plan for this or that. So luckily now I have the benefit of years and years and years in the business, and now I kind of know how to prep and prepare the trailers as well as uh prepare for me not being on site and walking people through things if need be. Um for instance, when I was gone, one customer they showed up and he just didn't have a hit, his truck sat really high and he didn't have a drop hitch. So even when he raised the trailer all the way up, the jack all the way up, even with the drop plug being down, it still was too tall. And I'm like, listen, man, like you gotta have a drop hitch, you gotta pull the thing more level than that. And um, so he ended up using the drop hitch, and I told him where it was at and all. So, anyway, there's little things like that that come up, and you know, you hop on the phone with somebody and just walk them through it. It's pretty easy. Uh, nothing to it. Um, one thing that did happen while I was gone, um, I ended up getting a six-day rental, uh, no, excuse me, seven-day rental through Big Rentals Marketplace. So great, awesome rental. Um, you know, it pays good money. And the guy I picked up is a contactless rental. You know, he picks picks up without me. You know, I wasn't even in town when he picked the thing up. And I used the ride dog uh ride dog GPS system, okay? And shout out to Ride Dog. And matter of fact, uh no, okay, never mind. I didn't know if I had one of their units nearby. I I just installed it on another trailer I got. But anyway, um I I set all of my trailers for speed alerts to alert me at 80 miles an hour, okay? 80 miles an hour is excessive. Sure, the trailer's fine, it's gonna be whatever. On paper, the trailers are not designed to go that fast or not necessarily designed, they're they're not rated for that, they're not uh recommended to go that fast or whatever. So when I start getting those notifications in the top of my phone of excessive speed, trailer number three, excessive speed, trailer number three. You know, that's what I kept getting. And uh so I reach out to the customer, I texted him, hey, you know, uh leave his name out, but hey, Mr. Customer, I'm getting excessive speed notifications from the equipment. Please do me a favor and you know keep it at speed limit or below. Trailers are not ready to go that fast, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, whatever. And uh he responded back, no problem, I didn't realize I was speeding. Okay, whatever. You know, red flag number one. Um so fast forward maybe five or six hours, boom, pops up again. Boom, pops up again, boom, pops up again. So every time it hits 80 miles an hour, and I have it in my truck as well, Ride Dog GPS on my truck, I set the alert to 80 miles an hour too. And this is a lot of that was when I was testing it out, but same thing. You know, I I it pops up immediately. As soon as you hit 80, boom, you get the notification. I think it's maybe after a few seconds of it, but either way, it's it's pretty fast. And um yeah, I kept getting it over and over and over. So I I texted him again and I didn't see the little red you know thing, and he hadn't looked at it, which is good because he's driving, great. Um, so I just called him, like, hey man, uh, listen, I I hate to bug you with this, but I'm having to hit you up again about speed. You're going too fast. It's a safety concern, it's an insurance concern. I mean, whatever. Um, and it's a wear and tear concern. You know, you you're not supposed to be driving that fast. Please slow it down. And by the way, he went to like Ohio or something. I mean, he was like way up north um where he took the trailer, he put put some miles on it. And so um he's like, okay, got it. You know, he he probably wasn't the happiest that I called him on it, but it's like, man, you gotta you gotta slow down with the equipment. And so one, you know, one time, okay, it happens, you pass somebody, you get warned, okay, great. But then if you do it again, that's that's kind of a problem for me. I really don't like that. Um, and the thing is, yes, it is wear and tear on the trail, and I'm sure somebody watching this right now, I used to drive 90 every day on my trails, but I never had a problem. Whatever. Okay, that's great, that's fine, that's awesome. I've never had a problem with it either, but we know that it's not right, so therefore we shouldn't do it and we shouldn't allow it, okay? And you're also training your customers what you will and won't tolerate. That's a huge thing. Because if this guy ever decides to rent for me again, you know, it considering that he that he did it many, many, many times after being warned a couple of times and still sped. He's he's he I still got notifications after I called him. Um, you're training this customer that you're okay with them abusing your shit. So if he tries to rent for me again, I'm not gonna rent to him. Simple as that. I don't care that he rents for a week at a time. I don't want customers like that, plain and simple. But anyway, it's also something to hold that customer accountable because you called them. Say they got say he got into an accident. Maybe he wasn't able to stop in time and he's fully loaded, whatever it is, and he was going 85, 90 miles an hour, whatever it was, right? He can't say, oh, well, the customer's trailer uh brakes weren't working, or the uh custom the company's uh the trailer's brakes weren't working, he didn't service them or whatever. You know, he might try and say, he can't say any of that because I could say, well, no, dude. See right here in black and white, I'll export it to you. You know, my GPS showed that you were going 89 miles an hour when this happened. So stopping distances increased, and you know, whatever. Maybe there's more excessive heat buildup in the hubs, and maybe you blow a hub out. I mean, whatever. They can't say they can't blame lack of maintenance on the trailer at that point when you have record of that stuff. Maybe they can try, but it's like doesn't matter at that point. Here you go. And I know some guys that are so strict about the speed thing that they actually put it in their contract, and uh they'll put it in their contract that if a customer exceeds 75 miles an hour then they forfeit their deposit or whatever. I've I've seen it. Um, or if a cut, you know, there's a fee if if you're um you know, if you're speeding or something like that. I I'm not that strict about it. Um I I I will just hit people up. It doesn't happen often enough for me to really put a clause like that in there. However, some guys are some guys are pretty serious about it. So um so anyway, the Ride Dog GPS makes it really easy to keep track of that stuff and to um, you know, uh hold the customer accountable and have record of everything there. So um so anyway, so that was just an interesting thing. It happened several times, and again, trailer came back safe and sound, everything's good, that's fine. But um, you know, it's obviously we don't want customers doing that. We don't want to train our customers that it's okay to do those things. So you have to call the customer out on it. Don't think that you're doing yourself or the customer any favors just by not saying anything because you're either uncomfortable with it, don't know what to say, whatever. Just reach out to the customer. Hey, Mr. Customer, I'm getting excessive speed notifications from the equipment. Please do me a favor and obey all traffic laws and you know, speed limits and posted speed limit signs and all that kind of stuff. Um, it's just better for safety and for wear and tear on the equipment. Something really basic like that. And people understand they get it. Now, they may not have been expecting you to reach out to them, but so what? Oh well, it's your equipment, it's your asset. Um, and you know what? It's it's a big liability thing. You know, God forbid something happened and now you're gonna be caught up in it. Yes, sure, you'll probably come out on top and you got insurance and all that, and you got proof that it was who wants to deal with that shit, right? So just don't just don't let people do it and uh call them out on it. So little things like that happen, whether you're out of town or in town, whatever, it doesn't matter. But that's just one thing that kind of came up recently. The other thing that happened is being out of town, I had to handle this. Was my uh one of my 7x16 utilities got some frame damage. And I assume it was from uh like a jack knife situation, maybe the um bumper or some part of the truck went a little over it, over like the uh little A-frame in the front there, and then you know, when it straightened out, it kind of pulled it and twisted it, whatever. No big deal. When he sent me the photos of it, I noticed it in the photos, and um, I was like, hey man, like clearly you see the before photos and after photos, you clearly did that. And he's like, dude, yeah, I don't know what happened. Sorry. Um, let me know what I gotta do to take care of it. I said, No problem. Took it to the local shop, cannon welding, uh, cannons of Jacksonville, and uh they fixed it up, you know, hour and a half worth of labor and uh welding a little uh support piece to it, no big deal. It was done. It was like 250 bucks or 260 bucks, whatever. Told the customer about it, charged him, he was fine with it. Um so stuff like that happens. You gotta get things handled. It would have sucked if I was out of town and that happened, and then I had another customer trying to pick it up while I was out of town still, and I would have had to decline that rental or find them another trailer. But it's such a rare thing for major things like that to happen that it's it's really I don't really have much of a contingency plan for it, like set in stone because it just doesn't happen that often. Uh, where major, in my opinion, something like that being a major damage where you're bending a frame or bending a major part of the trailer construction that, you know, or a part of the trailer. But um, it just doesn't happen often enough for me to be like, okay, when this happens, I have to XYZ. Here is it, written in black and white. You know, you just kind of you just kind of work with it. And luckily, I was getting back in just a few days anyway. Didn't matter. And uh, you know, nobody had booked it in that time frame anyway, nor would I have rented it to them if they needed it. So that being said, um got the trailer all fixed up, it is good to go. Um, and then of course I had like the seven-way wiring uh wiring plug that got dragged, and I had my four-way on my six by twelve utility, the um right side um uh uh what is it, uh brake light, uh turn sort of brake light, whatever you want to call it. Um that little right side prong got broken off. So little stuff like that happens. Luckily, I installed some precision auto stuff on there, so from now on, just plug a new one in. So that's gonna be great. Um, so anyway, guys, so that's just kind of a quick rough thing about how I prep for being out of town, how I run rentals, and some of the things that happened um while I was gone. It was a really cool trip because the first um the first day we drove to Virginia, Rustburg, Virginia, to meet up with Jake at the trailer spot. And um, so the the next morning we get up, we go straight to the dealership around 10 o'clock we got there, 10 a.m. we got there, and uh, we were able to meet up with Hugo and a couple other folks showed up uh that were you know within the the area just to say, hey, that was really cool. Congratulations again to Hugo and your family. Um, I'm gonna meet his wife, his kids. I mean, uh the beautiful family, and I I couldn't be happier that the the trailer um that he was the person that won the trailer because he, you know, him and I had already communicated a while back talking about you know what types of trailers we should upgrade to and or you know he should upgrade to what he should get. And he was asking us for some some input and uh some reassurances, and man, he was already looking to upgrade his fleet, and now he got another trailer to add to his fleet. So super, super cool, super happy for him. Huge shout out again to Jake from the trailer spot, man. Thank you so much for sponsoring such a cool giveaway. I'm eager to do more with you down the road um and continue uh shouting you guys out and and thank you guys for supporting and taking care of the trailer hustle community as well as you do. It really does mean the world to me. Um and certainly meant the world to Hugo winning that trailer. So that was really, really cool. So thank you again for that. And uh because of that, too, other dealerships and uh manufacturer, I can't say who just yet, but um reached out because they saw this promotion we were doing in the trailer hustle app and they want to be a part of it. You know, of course they want the exposure and they want you guys to see them and all that. That's great, but great, that's that's that's awesome because now they're gonna do kick-ass things for the community that you guys get to all benefit from, which is awesome giveaways of trailers or parts or discounts, exclusive discounts. Um, and just in general, more trailer hustle partnerships around the country is better for everybody. You know, my goal is long term, anywhere you go, whether it be a dealership or you're talking direct to a manufacturer or whatever, if you say, hey, trailer hustle, sent me or hey, I'm a part of trailer hustle. I want that to mean something. I want you guys to go into these dealerships and you tell them with trailer hustle, like, all right, great, well, we're gonna throw in blank because of that. Or hey, awesome, you know, we're gonna service whatever because, or hey, here's, you know, we're gonna take care of your spare tire and wheel for you because of that. Or hey, you get 5% off a sticker, or what I don't know. I'm just spitballing here. But how cool would it be where everywhere we go when it comes to trailers or within the industry, hey, are you a member of Trailer Hustle? You know, or hey, I'm a member of Trailer Hustle, man. You guys have anything for these guys? You know, I want it, I want it to be as as common as asking for a military discount, you know. I mean, maybe I'm crazy and thinking that, and it's not near as deserved, by the way. You know, military discounts are way more important, I believe. But point is, I want this to be, I want it to continue growing, and I want to create more opportunities for people in the community to continue growing, advancing their their uh personal and professional lives. And um, you know, I want the companies to get great exposure as well, the good companies to get great exposure as well. And I just want people to benefit from this relationship that we have going on here, this partnership that I have with, you know, not just those companies, but all of you that are watching this, you know, that are in this uh community. Um, you know, we're all building and growing this thing together, and I want everybody to benefit from it. So anyway, um, anywhere you go, if you're buying parts, you're buying a trailer, whatever, ask them if they heard of Trailer Hustle, invite them to join the app, invite them to join the group. Um, you know, it's all free. You know, they don't have to pay anything. You don't have to pay anything. Certainly, there's ways you can support Trailer Hustle and this thing that we're trying to do by subscribing to the app on a paid plan and getting more tools and things like that. Um, but you know, if you just want to be a part of it for free and utilize a lot of the free tools and all that and networking capabilities and all, please do it, guys. Please do it. Um, and invite everybody you can. I really appreciate y'all. Um, so anyway, so that's kind of the episode, guys. Um, it was a great trip. It was uh I'm excited to go to NATDA this coming week. Um I'm gonna be let me think here. I'm gonna be driving out the 31st, hanging around the first, and then going to the show on the second, maybe the third as well, and then driving out on the third. Um, so if you see me, say what's up. Message me, email me if you're gonna be around and you want to meet up, please let me know. I'm gonna be having maybe a dinner or two out there that I'll be going to. But if you guys want to meet up and chop it up a little bit, whether it's at the show or outside of the show, please email me or message me, text me, call me, whatever you want to do, and we'll we'll get together. I think it'd be super cool to meet some of you guys. Um, it's always a fun time at these shows. If you've already been there and it's not for you, that's no big deal. I mean, it is cool to go and see a lot of the newest innovative stuff that's coming into the industry. It's cool to talk to the manufacturers, a lot of these new parts companies. There's always something new when you go to these things, and uh it's it's super exciting. If you're a dealer and you're going there just because you're a dealer and your boss man told you you had to, whatever. I had some people like, oh, those shows suck and duh. It's like, I mean, they're cool. I thought they're I thought it was cool. So anyway, um, I think it's really, really neat. So anyway, see you guys there. Thank you so much for tuning in today.
