SPEAKER_00Hi, this is Judith Gale with Fair Claw Beaver Hills House in Edmonton, Alberta.
SPEAKER_01Judith, congrats. You're this week's community champion. How does it make you feel?
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, elated. Well, I can't believe that. Thank you so much. I appreciate that. Masito, hi, hi.
SPEAKER_01You do so much for the community. You organize uh an event here in Edmonton for Red Dress Day on May the 5th. Uh tell me a little more about the importance of Red Dress Day.
SPEAKER_00You know, we are in a crisis here in Canada. Um, I call it uh our own uh ongoing genocide. And um uh part of uh the genocide is attacking the women of a group. And um that's what we have seen uh for a long time and it's gotten out of control. And uh now not only women uh but we also see men, uh little girls, boys, you know, um all indigenous uh go missing at at such a fast rate, and um we seem to get no justice and uh it's very, very troublesome, and every May 5th uh in Canada we try to bring awareness to that plight.
SPEAKER_01So tell me what can one expect for this year's National Red Dress Day here in Edmonton?
SPEAKER_00Well, we start off with a pipe ceremony in the morning um so that we can occupy our space in a good way and uh give the honor and the respect that our ancestors uh deserve. Um and so we um then we uh set up our art display and uh then we uh meet um Ev the crowd at uh on Jasper uh for 11 a.m. and then we start to walk down uh Jasper Avenue. We have a uh round dance, a little round dance uh on 8th and Jasper, and then we proceed on to the Alberta Ledge ground. And uh then we have an afternoon of sharing and caring. Uh we uh have an open mic um so that our brothers and sisters can share their lived experience and realize that they are not alone.
