A Cat Is Not an Object ❤️🐾 A Living Being Who Needs Love

Our cats need much more than food, water, and shelter.

In this Diary of a Cat Mom podcast episode, I reflect on how easy it is to become consumed by our own schedules and responsibilities, and why choosing to see our cats as living beings instead of possessions changes the way we care for them.

A simple trip to buy cat food became a reminder that both people and animals need community, attention, and connection.

You'll Learn in this Cat Podcast Episode

  • Why cats have emotional needs
  • How busy lives affect our relationships with our cats
  • Why small moments of attention matter

Diary of a catmom. Cat is not an object. Cat is a living being. Welcome to Diary of a Cat Mom. The other day I had the need to ask a neighbor for help. I needed cat food. I didn't have enough cat food and my car was broken down and it was in the repair shop. So my neighbor immediately agreed to give me a ride to the supermarket so I could get my cat food. And while we were on our way to the supermarket and talking, we talked about that in our world right now, we humans focus more and more on our needs and it becomes self-focused. And so more we focus on our needs and less on the community need, that makes the world an emptier place because we all have situations where we need each other. And if I compare that to where we are going with how we treat animals, it's really the same thing. As a whole, our society, I see looking at animals in our care more as objects. So when we are in the mood, we want to cuddle with them and we want to hold them. And when we are not in the mood, we don't want to be disturbed. Then the animal should be just fine with feeding and water and shelter. Where in reality, like the cats we take care of, they are living beings. They have the need of community, they have the need of camaraderie, they have the need of comfort and closeness and getting attention, I think, by opening us up and breaking through our self-focus and focusing on the bigger picture of community. We are also in the same way changing our focus from looking at the animals in our care from object to living being. Sometimes I catch myself when I'm in a rush or stressed out or too much work that I'm becoming self-focused. And I'm becoming sensitive to interruptions because I just want to get things done. And then I have to remind myself to be here and in the present. And it doesn't mean I can't take interruptions all the time because at the end we all have to work. But I want to be sensitive about that I make conscious decisions whenever it happens. And if I can take a break for a few minutes and give a little one comfort, or give a little one attention, and let a little one know he or she is loved, it makes a huge difference, not only for the cats, but also for us. Because self-focus can make us pretty lonely and can make us feel isolated. And by us switching our focus to community, including others, including the animals we take care of. Internally, it makes us much more happier and balanced and brings us peace. How do you experience that when you are in a rush or you have a lot going on and your little ones, your cats need your attention? How do you deal with that? I would love to hear how you handle sometimes tough situations where you don't have the time, but you want to take the time to take care of their needs too. Thank you so much for listening to Diary of a Cat Mom. There's always another lesson, another insight, another story waiting to be shared right around the corner.
