The winter dome is buzzing, the coffee’s hot, and the conversation with Marco D’Angelo goes straight to the core of what makes a team win: culture you can feel and standards you can see. We open with laughs and holiday chaos, then move into loyalty, mentorship, and why Marco chose to stay with Sparks North—because access to great coaches and better reps only matters if you turn it into sharper decisions and stronger habits.
Marco walks us through the players who became culture pillars: the catcher who transformed from “turning the earth” into a base‑stealing threat, the “Luis Robert” look‑alike who showed up early, cleaned the dugout, crushed baseballs, then calmly closed games. We break down why a simple framework—ball, base, backup—wins more than any new gadget, and why Marco believes 60 to 70 percent of high school games are lost through preventable mistakes. The fix lives in practice: flood drills with variables, add stress, and teach players to stay calm in the storm so games feel slow and solvable.
You’ll hear the Indy story where an empty dugout forced creativity, a mid‑count pitching change saved arms, and a one‑pitch out flipped momentum. We talk accountability done right, including holding a high‑end prospect to team rules and earning parent trust. And we get practical about the small ethics that build a program—carry the bucket, pick up the balls, don’t roll one to a coach’s feet—because details are destiny when innings snowball. Between the bake‑off plans, Bears ticket pleas, and Seinfeld quotes, the tone stays warm and human, the way a good clubhouse should feel.
If you’re a coach, parent, or player who wants more wins and fewer excuses, this one’s for you. Listen, subscribe, and share with a teammate who needs the reminder: confidence is a coaching tool, chaos is a classroom, and fundamentals finish games. Leave a review and tell us your favorite drill or standard that changed your season.

SPEAKER_00Welcome to the good man show with Bruce Sauce and Lord Puck. I saw the light.
SPEAKER_02That's it.
SPEAKER_00That's it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Man, I thought we were getting a lot more out of you on that one.
Meet Marco D’Angelo
SPEAKER_02No. Um born to be alive. Yeah, I got flack for listening to that song too many times. Uh we have our youth director here, his name's Aaron Earhart. He calls me today and he said, I'm actually didn't call me. He saw me at the party yesterday. He said, Hey, I'm tired of all that disco music. We need better vibes on Sunday morning. So we're not going to be singing any disco anymore.
SPEAKER_00No disco. I thought you did a great job Sunday with the music, to be honest.
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
SPEAKER_00You're welcome. How was catching tonight?
SPEAKER_02We got better today. We were able to throw the ball where we wanted to throw the ball. We were able to block where we were supposed to block. And I felt like everyone had a good time.
SPEAKER_00Good.
SPEAKER_02Good. I wore the good shirt.
SPEAKER_00The good man shirt?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and everyone wanted a shirt.
SPEAKER_00I got my good man shirt on.
SPEAKER_02I saw a kid run up to his mom and said, Hey mom, I want a good man shirt. She said for Christmas.
SPEAKER_00$29.99.$29.99. Shirts are in. They're hot. Yeah, I'm wearing mine. They've been getting pressed out all over the place. Yeah. I got a couple kids at Infield. Coach, love your shirt. Can I get one? How do I get it? Hold in my office. Listen, email, text, DM. We got them in the office. Come get them. Lots of ways to pay for them. Come get your shirt. But another special guest in the house tonight, Marco D'Angelo. Welcome to the show.
SPEAKER_05What is up, podcast?
SPEAKER_00Marco! As Marco would say, and all the boys love it. One line.
SPEAKER_05One line. Get parallel.
SPEAKER_00One line, get parallel. The man is a one-line machine.
SPEAKER_05You know what it is.
SPEAKER_00The kids love him. We love him. Been here since the beginning.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Day one.
SPEAKER_00I'm going to start you right off where I started my brother off last week. And I'll tell you, you've been a big part of this organization. Great coach every summer, every fall.
SPEAKER_05Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Very reliable. Educate the kids. Definitely relate to the kids. Definitely get a lot of respect from the kids. But what's your favorite part of being with the Sparks North?
SPEAKER_05Well, before I answer that, I didn't want to interrupt your little intro, but yeah, the music does need to get better on Sundays.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_05It has been good.
SPEAKER_00It got fired right away.
SPEAKER_05It's good. Where's Jake? But I I'm a double up with double A. You know? Beep, beep. Um the mus that some of the disco, little play. You know, I have heard a few songs multiple times.
SPEAKER_00What about the wolf song?
SPEAKER_05You know, the wolf, that's that's the only song I would say that could be played back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back.
SPEAKER_00Just all morning.
SPEAKER_05You can. I think that'd be a good mental toughness day for a kid.
SPEAKER_07If that was just playing from seven to noon. I think it'd be a good one.
SPEAKER_00I think it'd be a big mental toughness for a lot of people. I think Bert might lose his money.
SPEAKER_05I think Duck would walk out.
Why He Stays: Staff, Access, Loyalty
SPEAKER_00I love that song, I thought. In all seriousness, like what is your favorite part about being here?
SPEAKER_05Favorite part about being here. Um I'd say probably what it comes down to is just the staff and the opportunity, I guess you could say I can have as a coach here, just with all the other coaches, from top to bottom. We got coach from our not staff, we got guys, we got Hall of Famers, you know, Hall of Fame MOB, and then we got guys that coach at the JUCO level, high school level, and all in in-between. You know, and I think that the big reason why I like being here is because I have all of that at my access. And also just this dome at my access, which is amazing.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think we all appreciate that because I think Jake, as he said last week, kind of touched on a similar uh point. And uh, you know, I I don't know if you and I have ever really talked about this, but I know that you know there are other organizations that have sought you out to try to get get you to leave here. Yes. Uh and you've been here since the beginning. And uh this is why I say this, Marco, of why I love you, man. And I I say it from the get-go. You are a loyal dude, you are a fantastic coach, and that is why people come and try to get you. Um, and you've always, you know, I'm saying you've been up in front, honest with us, and and you've never contemplated that. If you've ever had an issue or wanted something or or needed something, you've always come to us. Um, so I think from that part, we definitely appreciate you being here. And and I agree with you, we have a lot of people here who teach us all. Like you said, we cover a lot of different spectrums and levels, and and I think it's great. But you've coached many teams here. Oh, yeah. You've coached a lot of players, you've coached kids that are off in college, so we're gonna go down the same path. But I need you to give us a few of your favorites that you've coached.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, wow. There's kids that I've coached here in college now. Yeah, wow.
SPEAKER_02They're about to graduate.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, wow.
SPEAKER_02No, no, we got one more, right? One more year. No, no juniors. No, they're juniors.
SPEAKER_05We haven't we haven't hit seniors yet. We got one more year. Yeah, they're juniors in college.
SPEAKER_00Probably probably two for most of them.
SPEAKER_05But I'd say some of my favorites. Well, we just mentioned them earlier, saw him earlier in the dome. Mike Mango, you know, um, Noel Delgado, Jake Bentovenga, um, I could go on and on. Fitz, Foley, both Foleys.
SPEAKER_02I was talking about Foley the other day. Who's the spicier one?
Favorite Players And Their Grit
SPEAKER_05I'd say Michael Foley. Both both great kids, but when it when you when you're talking like the spice, it's like it's not like they're, you know, bad kids like they're mean or anything. It's just spicy. On the diamond, you gotta just watch them a little bit because you know they they could be on the diamond one second and then they're ejected the next. You know, because they both got a mouth on them. And that's you know, you just gotta watch them.
SPEAKER_00They're fiery, man. They're fiery. Both of them are fiery, which is why we love them because they compete. Yeah, they they want the baseball when they're on the mountain. They're they're not afraid to go battle with dudes. Um, but a couple names you mentioned there, uh, I feel like a lot of them have similarities. Uh you talk Mango, uh versatile baseball player, tough-nosed kid, grinder, could play at any position, like just a baseball dude. Jake Benveger, I I would argue one of the best catchers we've had ever walk out of this place.
SPEAKER_05Hardest, one of the hardest workers.
SPEAKER_00Uh I mean the kid went the kid went from I mean, at 14 years old, we used to jokingly say he ran and he was so slow that he was turning the earth when running, and now the kid's a sub-760 or whatever.
SPEAKER_05I've seen him hit a double ball to the wall and almost get thrown out, and now he's at first almost get thrown out at second, and now he's stealing bases from left. Stand up tri stand-up triples, you know, real hard worker.
SPEAKER_00Oh, awesome kid. Now, the the one I really want to talk about is Noah Delgado. No, because during Infield tonight, I kind of was talking to you a little bit about this question, and you said Delgado, and I said, You mean Luis Robert? And we both laughed because for those who know Noah Delgado, when he came here at 15 years old, he wore the same white socks, Luis Robert, 88 jersey. Every day for practice. Shirzy, I should say, every day for practice. And we jokingly always was like, Who's that kid again? I was like, Yeah, that's Luis Robert.
SPEAKER_05Nobody knew his name, and he would just call him Luis Robert.
SPEAKER_00He was always smiling, that's what he had. He was always working hard, always respectful. Like when that kid was 17 years old playing for you, we'd show up to games, and he was the first one there, last one to leave, always clean the dugout up after everybody. Like, smile on his face, but he played the game hard. Yeah, and I'll tell you what, that kid unloaded on baseballs.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. He he mashed baseballs. I think I remember him telling, he told me the story of when they played the women's USA team. Oh, dude. I think he hit a ball off this girl. It still hasn't landed yet.
SPEAKER_00I was there. We played the women's national team out at the old uh the original Rockford Peach Stadium. Uh, was that three years ago now?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we brought a bunch of our 15 and 16-year-olds because they want they were getting ready for their national tournament and championship over in Japan, I believe it was. So they reached out to some travel organizations and and you know, so I brought 15 and 16-year-old kids out there. And I mean, they had a couple girls that were 82, 84. Like their starting pitcher was, I mean, she was legit. They had uh she was a uh high school pitcher in Connecticut. Okay. Um, the girl, I forget her name, plays at Brown University was on the team. Um, I was watching the college the women's softball world series last year, and the third baseman for Old Miss, she was on the team and was probably their best player. Like she was really good, but it was a fun time. But Delgado got one.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he told me he said he said he felt a little bad after he hit it.
SPEAKER_00Oh man. And it was like a 280 fence to right fielder, and it flew into the parking lot over this playground set, and it was like, ooh.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, not only could Delgado hit a ball a mile, but he could also come in ninth inning and close the game out for you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You know, tip protocol, old school right fielder. You know, play right field all day. Time to come in and pitch, close the game out. Here you go, coach. Just fastballs. See how far you can hit it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pound the zone.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. One of the nicest guys. I'm telling you, he used I used to use him as an example all the time. He never complained, he never swore, you never saw him throw his helmet. I would say the guy got out of the car the right way. You know, there's no right way to do it, but he did it.
SPEAKER_02He was very proper.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Proper lad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Proper lad. So you're gonna have the 17 whites this summer. Excited. He had a really good summer last summer. You've had him for two years now. So most of the guys will be back playing, working. You guys had a fantastic summer last year. I know you guys are gonna be prepared again this year. Uh, what are you looking forward to this this summer?
SPEAKER_05More tournament wins, more pitchers, because last summer we got bit by the injury bug a little bit. Um, only had one P.O. all summer, won 29 games. That went what?
SPEAKER_02The pitcher won 29 games?
SPEAKER_05No, we won 29 games with one PO, homie. Come on.
SPEAKER_02Oh, sorry.
SPEAKER_05Think about how hard that is.
SPEAKER_02I know, I but in the summer. You when we give you oranges, you you squeeze. Oh, and you get the most out of those.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No soft. I'm not surprised if you had one guy win 29 games by himself.
SPEAKER_05You know, if it keeps adding up, it could happen. Because he threw, I think, uh complete games.
SPEAKER_00Who was that?
SPEAKER_05Jack Fagan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Fagan will compete.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Big body, Benwicker.
SPEAKER_05Not only will he compete, but before he pitches, he'll eat about two or three babies before the game. Wait, what? Yeah. That's about how much he eats.
SPEAKER_00The guy had the guy had Jake's told me this too, that he'll he'll go hammer like a whole pizza.
SPEAKER_05Jack Fagan, before a game, has eaten two Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches, 40 nuggets, a large mac and cheese, and I think he might have washed it down with like a Coke and a milkshake.
SPEAKER_00And got a dub.
Delgado Stories And The USA Game Bomb
SPEAKER_05And then he showed up and threw seven.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02So you're saying, I heard Ozzie Gehan talk about this back in the day. You know, all these pitchers are getting hurt because they're not drinking beer and eating burgers anymore. Are you saying this is the way to go?
SPEAKER_05How often was Baby Ruth hurt?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. He played a lot. I mean, they went out there, they played ball two, three ball games a game. They had the same pitcher throwing, too. Some guy named Lefty Right or Righty Left. Booby Barber. Oh. Or um What was that guy that played um who was that guy? Booby Miles.
SPEAKER_05Booby Miles.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Friday Night Lights?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I thought he was a pitcher.
SPEAKER_05No, Booby Miles is a running back. Oh.
SPEAKER_00You want to win, put Booby in. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Let Booby spin.
SPEAKER_00Water bug.
SPEAKER_05God made Booby beautiful.
SPEAKER_02What is he, Ricky Hand?
SPEAKER_00Great movie.
SPEAKER_05No, not Ricky, but great movie. Nah, nobody's Ricky.
SPEAKER_00So uh I gotta tell a pretty uh funny story that happened last week when I was in the dome. Um a lot of listeners. Yes, our audience is growing, and we appreciate y'all.
SPEAKER_04They are growing.
SPEAKER_00Uh, but I had a mom within the organization come up to me in the dome the other day, last week. And uh she comes walking up to me, and I do hitting lessons with her son, and he's been here for I believe three years now, and great woman uh walks up and she's like, I didn't know you were a baker. What? And I said, Absolutely. She's like, What's your favorite thing to bake? So I start having a lovely baking conversation with this mom. And uh now we have a bake off that we're gonna have scheduled for the summer.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Is this gonna be a show?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I mean, we'll figure out what we're gonna make it. We could bring it a live bake.
SPEAKER_05Is it gonna be like a Sparks bake-off?
SPEAKER_00I think it's just gonna be a bake-off between her. I think we can start to invite us. Well, hey, if there's anybody else who wants to enter the competition, they're more than welcome to enter a competition.
SPEAKER_05Oh, it'd be like one of those uh uh those shows, those cooking shows where it's like really intense. You got people running all over the place.
SPEAKER_00Oh, like a top chef?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, great show. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Love watching that show.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But with that said, Christmas is here. And you know what I'm starting tomorrow?
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00The Christmas cookies.
SPEAKER_02For who?
SPEAKER_00We got Christmas cookies? I just make Christmas cookies. Oh, you've got to be a good thing.
SPEAKER_02You have hard cookies or soft cookies? That's a big part of the cookies.
SPEAKER_00Well, I make a few different ones. We're gonna have some fudge, some hello dollies.
SPEAKER_05What's a hello dolly? Sounds like a hello cookie.
SPEAKER_00Uh, it's like uh coconut butterscotch chocolate chip with some like no, you love it.
SPEAKER_05The only coconut I like are snowballs.
SPEAKER_00Snowballs?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever seen Zodami Land?
SPEAKER_05I know. I had not the consistency, just the taste.
SPEAKER_00Snowballs!
SPEAKER_02Snowballs like with the coconut shavings?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's yeah. It's a coconut chocolate cream-filled type of that's the only, and then I don't, it's the only coconut I really like.
SPEAKER_02I don't really like coconut.
SPEAKER_00No, I don't either, but I like them in Hello Dollies.
SPEAKER_02So you're not you make this from scratch.
SPEAKER_05How big is that from the crazy?
SPEAKER_00I make all my stuff from scratch.
SPEAKER_05How big are these hello dollies?
SPEAKER_00They're just a little bite size. Like I make a big tray and then I cut them into bite sizes. I make this little like graham cracker marshmallow one too.
SPEAKER_05My mother bakes. She makes a potato chip cookie. Yeah, you heard that right. Potato chip cookie. I don't know. People go crazy for it though.
SPEAKER_00Can she make some and we get those in here?
SPEAKER_05I'll bring them in. Hey, she's invited to the bake-off.
SPEAKER_00Invited to the bake-off.
SPEAKER_05Now it's three people.
SPEAKER_00We're growing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But hey, big week of Sparks North baseball.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right? We got to cover the practice warriors. Right? We started off Tuesday, had our catching. We had a young buck take it down 29. Brady Moore coming all the way from Lockport.
SPEAKER_05Had him over the fall.
SPEAKER_00Great kid, works hard, scrappy. Uh infielders come in. 27. Jacob Sanchez from Frem High School. Been working, busting his butt, getting better. Uh Sunday hits, upper class. Jake has been very adamant trying to get this kid a practice warrior. But Noah Hickey. Noah Hickey.
SPEAKER_05He had great pants on the other day.
SPEAKER_00Joe DiMaggio. Lions Township High School. And then our underclass winners, 29, Autumn Pacheco from St. Lawrence.
SPEAKER_05Shout out, Noah. I had him over the summer. Great kid.
SPEAKER_00Great kid. Been here for what? Joe DiMaggio. Since he was 12? Five years now?
SPEAKER_05I think so. Great kid. Great dad. Great family. Great family. We don't know Jack about Sister plays for the channel. If you haven't seen it, look up on YouTube, Hittin with the Hickeys. It's there.
SPEAKER_02Is that an actual thing? Oh. Because I'll go watch Brad always brings that camera around.
SPEAKER_05Him and his sister hit. I should say they should start a show. Hitting with the Hickeys. Hitting with the Hickeys.
SPEAKER_00I kind of like that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I asked that kid, hey, you know who Joe DiMaggio is? He goes, I don't know who Joe DiMaggio is, so now I'll every time just call him Joe DiMaggio.
SPEAKER_05No, he's great.
SPEAKER_00Joe DiMaggio.
Summer Plans: More Arms, More Wins
SPEAKER_05He had to come in and pitch a couple times over the summer because I only had one P.O. Listen. Because he couldn't throw away too many burgers. Another thing, Josh always takes my players. That's a lie. Dan walked in one time, nobody was in my dugout.
SPEAKER_00Hey.
SPEAKER_05Why?
SPEAKER_00Hey, easy now. You're breaking, you're cutting, you're cutting up early here. I'm getting excited here. You're getting too early on that.
SPEAKER_05I'm excited.
SPEAKER_00That's for a later time in the show. But you know, Cooper Flag.
SPEAKER_02Nelson? When did I say Cooper Flag?
SPEAKER_05Didn't you? No, no, no, no. I had him in the fall, and then you had him in the summer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I yeah. Come on, man.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you're right.
SPEAKER_00Cooper Nelson. You know who you sound like? What? You sound like Josh around Jake. Jake takes all my players.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, they both don't take my players.
SPEAKER_05They both don't take my players. I'm surprised I didn't lose players to Jake this summer.
SPEAKER_00Don't you guys all understand? We're all one, man. They're all players.
SPEAKER_05I know we're all one.
SPEAKER_00But I like the idea. I'm gonna make a point how I brought you players.
SPEAKER_04You're right.
SPEAKER_00This guy's always busting chop spot. This guy gets him. He gets him. I only got one pitcher. Trust me, I got you more pitchers this year. We got a lot of 17-year-old pitchers. You should have enough.
SPEAKER_05Oh hey, I love my team. We just need more arms.
SPEAKER_00We got your arms now. That's it. Okay, we're gonna take care of you.
SPEAKER_05Thank you.
SPEAKER_00All right. Put you up in a nice hotel. Take care of you guys there.
SPEAKER_05Oh. No, what was the hotel you put me in two years ago?
SPEAKER_02Best hotel, Madison, Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_05It was in a Marriott, dude. It was like you walk around, all the it's you know the Orlando airport? When you walk in, it's got all the rooms around. That's what it was like. Oh you walk up, all there's I could see the room across from me. I could see the room inside.
SPEAKER_00It's like, you know, nice little nice little like a little bait buffet down below.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and there was a little well, I wouldn't call it a waterfall, but they had a nice little water trickling type of thing going on.
SPEAKER_02Superstar.
SPEAKER_05It was nice.
SPEAKER_00So let's talk about practice a little bit on Sunday.
SPEAKER_02Man, I was tired.
SPEAKER_00You were tired, but you you know what? You're a warrior, you know how to answer the bell. Came straight off that plane from Vegas where you're at the softball convention.
unknownStop.
SPEAKER_00Right? Doing your work out there, learning, learning the information.
SPEAKER_05Don't hype him up.
SPEAKER_00Hey, listen, man. The guy's a head, he's an assistant coach of Roosevelt softball. He's he's he's expanding his knowledge, right? He's growing.
SPEAKER_05Oh no, yes, yes, but don't hype up the fact that you flew in on the red eye.
SPEAKER_00He caught the red eye. He got himself here. He helped me out. I had a big 8 a.m. game. I had to slept in two days, dude. You're fine.
SPEAKER_04You've done it before.
SPEAKER_00But this was the first time, because I missed two weeks ago, that I got to see the chaos that Josh created on the field. And I gotta tell you, I loved it. I think it adds another layer to our training. And I started feasting off it too, where we were doing first and thirds, and when our catchers weren't getting up quick enough to give the sign, it's like, nope, too slow. Oh yeah. Base runner at second, base is loaded. And then it changed everything for our infielders on the fly.
SPEAKER_05Hey, put the pressure on.
SPEAKER_00It was right when when uh corner infielders weren't getting to their cutoff spots. Yeah, base runner. Here we go. Uh we had the one inning where no runners went first and third.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownRight?
Food Lore And Pitching Toughness
SPEAKER_00Two outside. Two outs to start. And then we had the other inning, the same team who they didn't even send a guy to hit.
SPEAKER_02No, two outs.
SPEAKER_05But nobody went up.
SPEAKER_02Like to speak on that. Apparently.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I like this though. You create all this chaos now. A game's gonna be a walk in the park.
SPEAKER_02Well, talk about your fall team. About like you had some talent on that team, but what was the what was the backbreaker for you? I saw it firsthand a couple times. You still beat us that one game.
SPEAKER_05But oh, being fundamentally sound, yes, we did beat. That was the highlight of the fall, beating Coach Josh. Yes, always.
SPEAKER_00So Marco coached our 29s our freshman freshman right now. Yeah. Our 15 use this fall.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Yeah. But I feel like you could have won a lot more games if you didn't make any defensive.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, if we were just fundamentally sound and if we were thinking about maybe two plays. So before the ball's hit, if we were just thinking about where to go with the baseball, if it takes me this way, it takes me that way. If it's hit slow, if it's hit hard, if it's a pop-up, grounded whatever, you know, ball base backup. You always have a job.
SPEAKER_02Pre-pitch.
SPEAKER_05If you're not playing the ball, you got a base to get to. If you don't got a base to cover, you got somewhere to back up. The triple B's. Ball base backup.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Um but you also, Marco, for people that don't know, Marco also coaches high school baseball at Morton. Yes, I think high school. Um now you coach a lot of high school baseball, you're on a lot of high school baseball. What games and people would be like, oh, that's a stupid question. No, what games, what's the percentage of games lost rather than won in high school baseball?
SPEAKER_05The percentage of games lost?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, in terms of teams giving games away based upon not being defensively sound.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like oh yeah. If you're asking, yeah, how many times teens beat themselves, I guess you could say. More, I'd say more than 60, 70 percent. Where it's to where it's teams where I'm having a conversation with my team where it's like, if this didn't do that, if we didn't do this, if we pick up a baseball here, if we just made this one play to end the inning, our pitcher doesn't throw another 30 pitches and they don't get another five runs. So yeah. What has been the lot of self-inflicted wounds?
SPEAKER_02You've been doing this a long time. Um what's been the best route? Because you have many great traits about you, Marco. Oh thank you. Many great traits. But two questions I have piggybacking off of that one. What's a thing you do coaching wise to help your team steer your team in the right direction, up, eat themselves, whether it be in practice or talking to them? And then number two, how do you keep such an upbeat vibe the entire time throughout the stormy seas of high school and travel baseball?
SPEAKER_05So for the first part of that question, I guess is just instilling confidence in the players. That's about it. Because, you know, obviously talent, you know, fluctuates here and there, but I think a player has the most success when they are just confident doing whatever they're doing, even if they make the wrong decision. If they did it confidently, you know, hey, who knows you did you made the wrong decision? You know what I'm saying? So I would say, yeah, just instilling confidence into the players. Um, so when they're in between the lines, you know, it's not, oh my god, if I mess up, coach is gonna do this or coach is gonna do that, or oh my god, where am I going here? Where am I going there? It's just if you're confident, I feel like they're calm, and when you're calm, the game comes easier to you. You know? And then that second part of your question is how do I stay so upbeat? I really don't know.
SPEAKER_00Um thinks Celsius.
SPEAKER_05Uh no, that I have always said Celsius is don't and monsters, they don't have an effect on me. Like I could drink a Celsius right now and go to bed.
SPEAKER_02Um what did you do to get to that point?
SPEAKER_05I don't I think it's just me, my body. I don't think caffeine's really had an effect on me my entire life. You know, or any of that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Can you how do I keep so up?
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I mean, I just I see what's going on in front of me. Yes, I'm pissed off of what's happening, but there's always something worse that's going on somewhere. So, you know, and I love baseball, and this is something I love. So it's like, yes, I'm pissed off. So it's like, but this is I love, you know, I love it. I like that answer.
The Bake‑Off And Christmas Cookies
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say, I think that is exactly what keeps you upbeat, is your love and passion for this game. As we talk about it, we are invested in this game and we love this game, and we are passionate about what we do, and this is why we do what we do, yeah, right? We wouldn't do this and spend the time with the kids we spend. Like the amount of time we spend with those kids. We would not do that if we did not love. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I always people ask me this like, why like what do you love most about coaching sometimes? Or or excuse me. It's like, how do you know you're maybe getting through to your players? And it's like it's just when it kind of click, you could see it click for them. You know, you've been talking, you're trying to get a guy to do something for X amount of weeks, days, whatever, or your team, you know, and you could just see it finally click. They go, Oh, hey, you know? And it's I feel like it's when I see that and it's like, okay, I'm doing my job.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Well, here to the point of you coaching that 15-year-old team this uh fall, we have a high-end baseball player at that age, in my opinion. Yes, that was on that team, and uh he had done something that as an organization we have a rule that hey, if you aren't going to do this, well then here, find yourself on the bench.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you're gonna figure it out.
SPEAKER_00You did the right job as a coach instead of letting that kid get away with it, you held him accountable for our rules and our expectations for him. And to be honest with you, like sometimes we do that with kids and they get upset and they get pissed and then they leave, they go full or they don't like you as a coach because they're like, well, he doesn't like me. And I actually had a conversation with him as dad, and it wasn't pertaining to that, but that situation came up, and both of them were so appreciative of it because they said, We want coaches that are going to challenge him, we want coaches that are going to teach him, we want coaches that are going to basically hold him accountable for what he he wants to do. Now he's still young, and I still believe he has a long way to go, and I think he's gonna get there because I think he's gonna buy into what we do and he's starting to, but I think it was such a fresh start for him coming into high school and have you as a coach to do that that it set the tone early going into winter. And I think that's why it was great having you at that age group because it's like players love you, you relate to them, you pull a lot out of them, and sometimes having 15-year-olds, especially in the fall, a lot of them are new kids, like they don't know our ways yet. Like, it's just it's it's a tough environment to throw a coach into because, like you said, you're trying to challenge those kids and you're trying to get them to get things to click, and then you see them do things and it's driving you crazy. Yeah, it's like I gotta stay positive because if I turn on this kid, he's not gonna respect me. And if I can't get him to respect me, I'm not gonna get the best out of it.
SPEAKER_05Exactly.
SPEAKER_00So I thought that was awesome, man. Um, and I appreciate what you do, but we gotta go to uh cup of brew brought to you by Newman's Corner Pub.
Practice Warriors Shout‑Outs
SPEAKER_02It's in the Western suburbs, it's run by our guy, Jeff Naraki. I know Marco knows our guy Jeff Narocki. Um, Mr. Mayor Love the Narockies. Love the Narockies. Um, if you ever need to gamble, eat, drink, or maybe find a new friend in the western suburbs. I mean, it's always nice to have a friend. I going back to my trip in Vegas, I'm in the elevator, and the person goes, Who'd you coach for? I go blah blah blah, and they go blah blah blah, and they walk out of the elevator and I say, Hey, we're not strangers anymore. I know your name. So now I know someone in Miami, Florida, because we had an interaction in the elevator. So imagine if you go to Newman's Corner pub, you meet a friend there, and now you have a friend, maybe you need a jump in the snow when it's cold, and they come up on the whatever interstate's going out there. I think it's the what is that? 88, 94? 94, right? 94. Yeah, Newman's Corner Pub. For a cup of brew.
SPEAKER_00So a cup of brew is gonna be brought to you today with Marco being told a story about a lovely incident that took place in Indianapolis. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Okay, it was indie?
SPEAKER_00Oh, it was indie.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. That year I was in everywhere but Illinois.
SPEAKER_00So during the indie MPL, right, the high school kids played during the week. They played Tuesday through Friday, the 16s and 17s, and the 15-year-olds will play basically uh Friday through Monday. So Marco was coaching our 17-year-old team.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_00And uh good group of kids. Great group of kids. And uh I believe you were short on pitching once again.
SPEAKER_05Once again, short on arms. Nothing new.
SPEAKER_00What new? Marco texts me in the middle of the game. Actually, I think it was literally the start of this game, and I was driving from a different game to his game.
SPEAKER_05I think it happened when Kinsley.
SPEAKER_00And I get a text and says that hey, Kinsley just popped his elbow. Uh we're we're a little short on arms here. I said, I'm on my way, I'll be right there.
SPEAKER_05It was the first inning when Kinsley.
SPEAKER_00So I come walking up, and Marco, who's coaching with Jack Calcogno, a 24 grad. Jack Key! Great former player of mine. Great dude. Uh, love that he coaches the kids, but the two of them are coaching, and I see we're on defense. So I walk in the dugout expecting to see, you know, players in the dugout. And I walk in, and all I see is Marco and Jack. And I looked at Marco, I said, Where's everybody else? He goes, This is all we got.
SPEAKER_07You're looking, you're looking at the field.
SPEAKER_00The team's on the field.
SPEAKER_07Kinsley just left.
SPEAKER_00And I was like, where's all the other guys? So and so is at football. So-and-so is at football. Uh, he's hurt, he's hurt. Yep, and I'm sitting there watching this team.
SPEAKER_05I don't even know who was on the mound.
SPEAKER_00You were uh I know who Neil wasn't on the mound. No, O'Neal wasn't. I think Foley was on the mound.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. Somebody had Robin. No, Foley. Somebody went to eat innings right away.
SPEAKER_00I think Foley was on the mound because I remember showing up and I forgot Carter was back. Carter Monroe was back, and he was playing short. And I kept looking. I was like, who is that? It's short.
SPEAKER_05And that's when we got Carter.
SPEAKER_00And then Carter came back, which was huge. Huge. Uh, and we show up, and I'm joking, and you're dugout about it. And games going on, and you know, things aren't going perfect, but you're still in the game, and we're now late in the game and competing. We're competing, and you know, uh Marco's got a right fielder who's a two-way guy. He's pretty good on the mound off playing at NYU now. And yeah, he he had warmed up previously in the inning.
SPEAKER_05Like for an inning, maybe he warmed up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And uh so started the pitcher on the mound goes 2-0 against the kid, and I looked at Marco and it was a He was at his limit. He was at his pitch limit. I looked at Marco, I said, Hey, we're gonna do something I've never done before. Marco said, I've never done it either. And Marco called timeout, he walked out to the mound, and well, he pulled a kid mid mid at bat.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Only ever seen it done once when I was I was playing against South Sub, and the South Sub coach pulled the guy pulled a guy. That same game, he pulled a guy mid, pulled the guy off the mound, mid count, and then he pulled the guy from his from the batter's box mid at bat and sent another kid up there to bat.
Chaos Training And Fundamentals
SPEAKER_02I saw the COD coach do that too. That was crazy. He had a um not COD, um Ken Kiki. No, not Ken Kiki. What's the other K? Kishwaki. Kishwaki. This guy, he had a whiteboard, and he so he was giving the signs, dude blew off the signs, I guess. So then he goes into the dugout and gets the whiteboard, and I'm catching. He writes down hit and run on the whiteboard, flashes it to the entire field. That's embarrassing. And actually, this it I learned something from that though, because in my head, I'm like, this guy's messing with me. I don't know if this guy's going or not. And uh it put a level of doubt in my mind. And so if you coaches ever want to change it up, just tell the other team what you're gonna do. Throw them off. I guess, yeah. Uh but anyway, continue with the cup Obrew.
SPEAKER_05But no, yeah, that.
SPEAKER_00Well, hold on. So we put the pitcher in.
SPEAKER_05Make the pitching change. Peter comes in. One pitch. One pitch, and we're out of the inning.
SPEAKER_00Fly ball, gets out of the inning. I believe you guys ended up winning that game.
SPEAKER_05I think we did.
SPEAKER_00And then you had a game late that night up on field one at the at Westfield.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Because more guys were even leaving after that game.
SPEAKER_00There was one guy leaving, and Marco's like, I only have eight for the next game. I was like, I'll find you players. So I called, or I'm sorry, I texted all the kids on the 17U black team, and I knew a couple kids wanted some extra bets. And I basically pulled like five kids off that team that then came and played that night, and then we're all standing in the dugout. Marcos turned around. He's like, Man, I got all these kids to do. I don't even know what to do anymore. I got a full team.
SPEAKER_05I didn't know how to write my lineup. I was like, all right, here we go. Then it was too many kids.
SPEAKER_02This was an indie, right? This was, yeah. Was this before the Waffle House or after the Waffle House?
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't remember the Waffle House. I remember that. This one had to be before.
SPEAKER_05That second game, yeah. I had I had Chase and Fitz and I think a couple other guys. It was nice. I think Chase, I think Chase hit a bomb.
SPEAKER_00Delgado was there, I thought.
SPEAKER_05I think Delgado might have been there.
SPEAKER_02Oh, then it was before the Waffle House. Oh no. Because you can't do that.
SPEAKER_00I know the turn the Terminator threw the game. Yeah. But yeah, you did because you also had that was the that was right before uh when there was that collision in center field with with Gavin and dude, that was game one of the summer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Piscoty and O'Neal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Dove into each other.
SPEAKER_06Jeez.
SPEAKER_00But so all the all the hard times you give me about being short on players, I found you players in hours to take care of you. But I will say this. The show up to your dugout with nine guys on the field and looking around, I'm like, we're at the MPL. It was looking like that we have a team out there playing with nobody in the dugout.
SPEAKER_05I mean, nobody could complain about playing time.
SPEAKER_00No, it's great. Or at bats?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, don't complain to me about at bats. You're all getting them.
SPEAKER_00You know, you're getting three or four a game. But yeah, I mean, that was it was a that was a fun time, interesting time. Like I said, I don't know if I'll ever pull a kid mid-pitch again or mid-bat again. But at least you could say you've done it. I've done it. And it worked.
SPEAKER_05And it worked with an OPRF Husky.
SPEAKER_00The Huskies.
SPEAKER_05The Huskies. Turn hey, turning the name around. Peter Farron.
SPEAKER_00Pete. Love you, Pete. Great dude. So, time to talk Bears.
SPEAKER_06Oh boy. Jeez.
SPEAKER_00Joshua. We're not going to talk about tomorrow. Joshua.
SPEAKER_06Don't get me started.
SPEAKER_00Back on top. Yeah. Second place. We were here two weeks ago. We're back to it. Packers go down. Lose Parson and Watson. For the year.
SPEAKER_02Watson not for the year.
SPEAKER_05Watson's not for the year.
SPEAKER_00Would Watson pull his hamstring at the top of the street?
SPEAKER_05No, he's like chest broke.
SPEAKER_00No, that guy pulls his hamstring on the regular.
SPEAKER_05No, Patrick Sertan like fell right on top of him. Sick interception. Sick interception. But fell right on top.
SPEAKER_00How about Jalen Johnson's interception?
SPEAKER_05How many interceptions do the Bears have as a team?
SPEAKER_0029.
SPEAKER_05I think it's 30.
SPEAKER_00Is it 39? 30?
SPEAKER_05Is that interceptions or just turnovers?
SPEAKER_02I think we're at 30 now because then we come in with 27 yesterday. Maybe. And then yesterday's three.
SPEAKER_05It's actually 30 interceptions or just 30 takeaways.
SPEAKER_00I think it's 30 interceptions. I could be wrong. But I thought they looked good. I mean, obviously the Browns are a struggling team, but we did what we were supposed to do against them. We're not going to talk about yesterday. We're not going to talk about yesterday.
SPEAKER_02We're talking about Saturday.
SPEAKER_00We're talking about Saturday night. Yeah. 7 p.m.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Hey, anyone have any tickets out there? Help your guy out.
High School Baseball: Teams Beat Themselves
SPEAKER_00Any tickets? Listen, Lord Puck would love to go to the game. I'm going to throw a little pub. I'm going to talk to my uncle, see what I can do. Throw a little pub out here for you. Okay. This man deserves this. Thank you. He he bleeds the bears. He's got a bear in his room that he that he bought at the Brookfield Zoo. Yes. Okay. He's got it dressed up. If if I had a bear ticket, I would give it to you. Thank you. Like that's how much I know you want to go to this game. Yes. So listen. I wouldn't. There's listeners out there. You wouldn't? No, I wouldn't. You got, would you let me this guy. You got tickets. I'm going to get you tickets. Somebody out there listening to this has a ticket to this game. It's going to be cold. Some of you people don't like going to the cold games. This guy wants to go. Get Lord Puck a ticket for me, please. Somebody. Two tickets for me. If you get him a ticket, if somebody gets you a ticket, free good man shirt.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I need more than that.
SPEAKER_05Hold on.
SPEAKER_00Why would you need more than that?
SPEAKER_02They need more than that.
SPEAKER_05Why does Lord Puck need two tickets? Lord Puck is one person. I said one. I know, and he's over here saying two.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's because if he gets two thousand dollars. I thought beggars can't be choosers. Look at this chooser. If he gets two, he might invite you.
SPEAKER_05No, I already got the hookup to the Bears game. Wait, what? I don't know if I'm going, but if I needed tickets, I already got someone I could talk to.
SPEAKER_00So here I am selling to get a ticket. You got tickets, and you can't even get the man a ticket?
SPEAKER_05I could have gone to last week's game, but I had to be here.
SPEAKER_02What about this week?
SPEAKER_05I haven't spoken to my uncle.
SPEAKER_02I need to call Uncle D'Angelo. Uncle D'Angelo.
SPEAKER_05It's not Uncle D'Angelo. It's Uncle Uncle Who? Joe Davies.
SPEAKER_00Uncle Joe Davies. He sounds like a lawyer.
SPEAKER_05No, he's not a lawyer.
SPEAKER_00Doctor Marco's friend. Josh needs a ticket. Hook us up.
SPEAKER_05This is the same uncle that we had bullshit. I love that uncle. The Bull season tickets. I love that uncle.
SPEAKER_02See? Until he left the Bulls tickets.
SPEAKER_05Well, his company wasn't making losing money buying the Bulls tickets.
SPEAKER_02Come on. No, I I want to go.
SPEAKER_05We could have went halves on Bulls tickets this year, but you didn't want to do it.
SPEAKER_02See why.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they're terrible. They're bad. They're bad. Yeah. But when you go to the game, it's a little fun.
SPEAKER_00I went to the Black Hawk wrecking game on the game. Who's at the game? Saturday.
SPEAKER_05Hockey games, they're too long. They're actually shorter.
SPEAKER_02They're the shortest ones, I would think. Because sometimes you don't get a whistle and those minutes fly. Fly.
SPEAKER_05No, they're long. They're intermittent. It's good. No. They're longer than baseball games. No, wait a minute. No! Yes, they're gonna be able to do it. No!
SPEAKER_02This guy don't know hockey.
SPEAKER_05Listen, you don't even don't don't get me started on that. I'm trying to keep this as PG as possible.
SPEAKER_02You keep it PG however you want to, but you don't know hackey.
SPEAKER_05Hockey games longer an average hockey game is like 210.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. 220.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Two and a half to three hours.
SPEAKER_02Who?
SPEAKER_05Hockey. Who said that?
SPEAKER_02Google. I don't believe Google. AI. No, I don't believe that. They're not there.
SPEAKER_05Longer than baseball games. They're not they're the longest professional sport being played, I think. Well, Google. Longest running. Yeah. Yeah, they're long. How you guys did Google? You know why you guys think it goes by so fast? Because you're drunk. Well, not Josh. You know? But you guys don't really drink.
SPEAKER_00So if it's not Josh, there's only one person that you're talking to now. So you're talking to me?
SPEAKER_05Talking, eh?
SPEAKER_00This guy.
SPEAKER_05Well, I just know you drink. Josh don't really drink. Josh has a whiff of.
SPEAKER_00Did you see him at the Christmas party last night?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I know. That's the only time. And he had what? Three drinks? That's not drinking. Three drinks? Come on. That's a pregame.
SPEAKER_02To the Bears game.
SPEAKER_05Saturday, if you play your cards right. Hey.
SPEAKER_00What do we got to do about it? What do we think of the Christmas party? For those listening, we had our Bowdome Christmas party last night. We're doing a beautiful Primo Locos every year.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad you asked.
SPEAKER_00Okay, every year. Okay, Primo Locos. Get some tacos, some drinks. Marco, I want you to be very, very cautious with what you're about to say and how you approach us.
SPEAKER_05The party needs to go back to the dome.
SPEAKER_00Oh. Here's the problem. Okay, I'm gonna get I'm gonna hit you with the problem.
SPEAKER_05What's the problem?
SPEAKER_00There is no liquor license in the dome. So there, therefore, you cannot drink inside the dome.
SPEAKER_05So that first year we broke the law?
Coaching Philosophy: Confidence And Calm
SPEAKER_00No, that's not true. We applied for a liquor license for the day. Okay, and you are allowed to apply for it, but they can you cannot do that anymore. Hence why we don't do the party here anymore. We have to go somewhere else. You cannot do it here for that reason. We could host the party here, but then the fun for some people, not everybody.
SPEAKER_05Just bring your Gatorade bottles. That's about it.
SPEAKER_00Well then you're breaking the law.
SPEAKER_06We're drinking Gatorade. How do we not get a license to do that?
SPEAKER_00Bring your Gatorade bottles. I'm gonna walk in with a Gatorade bottle. What do you think?
SPEAKER_07This is the dome. It looks it doesn't look bad. Somebody walking in here with a Gatorade bottle looks normal.
SPEAKER_02Are you doing that at the Bears game? You walk in with an Aquafino bottle, all clear?
SPEAKER_05That's Molly Water. That's what the young kids are saying. I know about this because I'm a high school teacher.
SPEAKER_01Baby shirk do do do do to do baby shark do do do do to do Marco shirk to do do to do to do marco shark. Next thing you're gonna be saying six and six.
SPEAKER_05Lysa should be here at the dome. Obviously, we got our answer to why it's not here at the at the dome.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I would I would love it to be here. The one we had here at the dome was just um it wasn't bad.
SPEAKER_05I wish there was uh a little bit more food. Uh one of our uh coaches here, I think, ate for about 10 people himself.
SPEAKER_00The tomatoes on that guy's plate.
SPEAKER_05I don't I think that was just for show. So I saw a lot of it off the plate. You know, I think he was just trying to do something mentally there.
SPEAKER_00Did you see the bites he was taking?
SPEAKER_05He was eating like George Costanza. If you for my listeners out there, if you've watched any Seinfeld, first of all, great show. Great show. Seinfeld, Seinfeld and Sopranos built or paved the way for what tele whatever television you watch today. Okay. But back to the Christmas party. One of the coaches, I'm over here, you know, enjoying a drink. Mingling, talking, this, that, the other.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_05And then I look over across from me, and if I didn't know the guy, I would I would have thought maybe he's homeless. Maybe he just got out the joint, you know, maybe he's not really, he hasn't been around that many people, you know. Maybe he, maybe he's seen some things.
SPEAKER_00I think I think my the way he was eating. My favorite thing you asked him was, Do you eat like that when you're on a date? Oh, yeah. And he goes, Absolutely.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the guy was hunched over his plate, his chin was buried in it. He had it, he was his elbows were, it's like if he was boxing out Shaquille O'Neal. Okay. And it was just if you ever played the game Hungry Hungry Hippos, that's what it was.
SPEAKER_02And who was this? Who's this coach?
SPEAKER_05This coach, one of my favorites, Josh Cassara. I'll never coach with him, but I love him.
SPEAKER_00You haven't ever coached him.
SPEAKER_05No, and I tell the kids all the time, don't you ask me, you think you and why don't you and Coach Josh coach together? I'll be like, listen, first of all, I don't want to. Second of all, it won't go well.
SPEAKER_00Can I can I go back really quick and tell one of my favorite stories of you coaching?
SPEAKER_05Oh, me?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What? Oh, I'm gonna kind of embarrass what happened.
SPEAKER_00Did that get tossed? So Marco's teams sometimes are notorious for doing game changer in the dugout with Marco with Marco's phone or iPad. I forget which one of them.
SPEAKER_05Oh, it's my phone. I'm too cheap. I think this was I haven't bought an iPad.
SPEAKER_00So they're doing it with his phone.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Marco's over to third base, and it's literally the middle of an inning. He's giving signs. And the kid yells, Coach, your phone, your phone, what's your passcode? And he's going, three, two, six, eight, nine, four. He's giving signs, just yelling his passcode.
SPEAKER_05Yelling my coat across the dock.
SPEAKER_00Across the field. And the third base, the third base dugout where the other team was the coach is just dying laughing.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's because, yeah, sometimes I don't have a parent doing the game changer. And also, it's just a good good idea to have the kids just kind of stay in the game. Yeah, the pitchers. The pitchers. Yeah, especially the pitchers. Although sometimes our pitchers don't know what the hell is going on on game changer. Like one time, I don't know who it was. Might have been Henry Johnson. On Game Changer, never made the pitching change. When I look back at it, our for our one guy, whoever pitched, threw like 300 or it was like 170 pitches.
SPEAKER_02How many burgers did he perform?
SPEAKER_05100 something pitches. And it was just like, okay, well, this is all wrong.
SPEAKER_02So you are right. You do have guys throwing not much. 29 and oh, starting guys, all right? Burgers, fries, this is the Marco Way. This is the mark. And then you're attacking me for the way I eat. You're telling me that guy right there, when he pulls up to a hockey game, isn't eating all that.
SPEAKER_05Listen, we go to culvers, this guy orders a quadruple burger.
SPEAKER_00A quadruple burger. You know what I did on my way in today?
SPEAKER_01Bag W.
SPEAKER_00Because I only had breakfast.
SPEAKER_05It was my brother's first job. I will say this though. Shout out Culver's and Lions.
SPEAKER_00First time I've ever gone to the culverse over on York.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The worst butter burger I've ever had.
SPEAKER_02It's not great. And they charge you more for the taxes.
SPEAKER_00Why was it so bad?
SPEAKER_02Because, well, I can't say that.
SPEAKER_00They like over-grilled it.
SPEAKER_02I have my theories.
SPEAKER_00It was just I was it was sad. I will say this. The cheese curds were on fire.
SPEAKER_05Have you had that cheese curd patty sandwich? No. It's a thing. Instead of a burger, it's a cheese curd patty. I think you can even put a burger on it though, too. I think it comes by itself. It's almost like a giant fried grilled cheese, I guess. Right? And then you could throw a burger on there.
SPEAKER_00Kids, just so you know, make sure you guys aren't going to back the blue too much. Make sure you guys are throwing some good things in the old system. Get some chicken. Unless you're Jack Fagan. Well, hey, listen, sometimes we talked about this before. Sometimes baseball players and athletes, if you're riding high on something you're eating, keep doing it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I asked his dad, I was like, has he done any competitive eating? And believe it or not.
SPEAKER_00George isn't at home.
SPEAKER_05He hasn't yet, but they both he said that they both talked about it maybe after baseball.
SPEAKER_02Believe it or not, Fagan is eating.
SPEAKER_00Believe it or not. What do you think he would eat in? Hot dog? I love watching the hot dog eating contest.
SPEAKER_05Oh, no. The one you gotta watch is the lemonade chugging contest. I forgot who it is that wins it, but it's this big giant guy, and he just chugs. I think it's a whole gallon of lemonade. Maybe two gallons, three gallons. It looks pretty big.
SPEAKER_02Sounds like the life. Um I love lemonade if you don't know anything about me. If you want to get on my good side in the summer, if you want to play, and you're going through a rough spot, let's say you're 0 for 30. I tell the kids all the time, if you're 0 for 30 and you want to get in that lineup, you just give me a simply lemonade before the game.
SPEAKER_05Culver's gift card.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that too, and you're you're in for the rest of the year.
SPEAKER_00Just hey, just saying Christmas is coming, guys. Couple gift cards today. Happy holidays. Happy holidays.
SPEAKER_05I didn't get my Christmas bonus at the party this year. I was a little upset about that.
SPEAKER_02You sure your records are okay? I got an ADP email the other day saying I needed to update my uh address.
SPEAKER_05I talked to the boss not every day, but you know, his office right next to my locker. Uh I asked him, you know, and he said, show up to the party. I showed up to the party.
SPEAKER_00You always show up to the party. You know, and the good thing is the year's not over.
SPEAKER_05The year's not over. So there's still hope. There's still hope. The holiday isn't over, so there's still hope for a holiday bonus.
SPEAKER_00I was watching, I was watching Christmas Vacation the other day.
SPEAKER_05You serious, Clark?
SPEAKER_00And my wife, it's my wife's favorite Christmas movie. And and until last year, I had never actually watched it from start to finish. And I gotta say, well, I was not a big Christmas vacation. I'm a I love Vegas vacation.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Vegas vacation is hi, I'm looking for an underage kid named Papa Georgie. Have you seen him? Yeah, he stole my wallet.
SPEAKER_03He went that way.
SPEAKER_00Great movie. But Christmas Vacation's good, man. Yeah. I I've uh I've I've watched it once this year already. I'll probably watch it again, but it's it's uh it's a good, it's a good Christmas flick. I was asking all the kids at Infield today. You were there. Every group would come up, I would go, favorite Christmas song.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, uh, uh, jingle buzz.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, nobody knows nothing. Favorite Christmas movie. These kids don't know anything.
SPEAKER_00You put them on the spot, they're I asked I asked one of our uh 10-year-olds, favorite Christmas song, Felice Navidad.
SPEAKER_06What's not bad?
SPEAKER_00And I was like, good, different.
SPEAKER_06Not bad.
SPEAKER_00No. We had a fun time at Infield tonight. We had a lot of jokes. I was out there singing Christmas carols. What was Duck singing? I don't know, but Duck was on the ground.
SPEAKER_04Duck got after a little bit with the older group. Maybe the younger group got him there.
SPEAKER_00Duck, Doctor and the younger group, second group finishes with them and he goes, Hey guys, just so you know, you were in my second best group today so far.
SPEAKER_02You know, he asked for autographs in the cage.
SPEAKER_00With for who?
SPEAKER_02For him. Like they he tells the kids, hey, you want my autograph?
SPEAKER_00And do the kids ask back for it?
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_00He's good. He's good.
SPEAKER_02I heard someone hit someone in the head with a flip.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you keep asking about this. You play Jack Harmon.
SPEAKER_02That's what someone told me.
SPEAKER_00That Harman has.
SPEAKER_05Well, Jack Harmon hitting somebody with a flip? Yeah. I can't second that. Or through behind him. I can't second it, but I did hear it. Well, not hear it, but I heard of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but who told you it?
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I heard he was also told me. I can't even tell you who told me. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_00There's so there's so much out there in this story. Nobody has any information.
SPEAKER_02I heard he also, when kids don't pick up, he yells out Serenity now.
SPEAKER_00Insanity later.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's he's like, I'm I'm Marco, I'm gonna bust! I'm gonna bust, Marco! Serenity now!
SPEAKER_05All you kids, all you Sparks kids that are listening right now, because it pisses me off too. And you know when I get pissed off, you'll hear me. But pick up baseballs when a cage needs to be picked up. If you are not the next guy to hit in the cage, go pick up baseballs.
SPEAKER_00If if you don't have big league time and you aren't picking up balls, you're disrespectful.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, go pick up. You're hitting. Go pick up baseballs because I'm more than positive you hit at least six of those baseballs that are laying in that cage of the 40, 50.
SPEAKER_00Even if you didn't, like it and you're standing near that cage, get in there and pick up balls. It's it's be a good man.
SPEAKER_07It's character.
SPEAKER_00It's not it's yes, be a good man, but it's not even that, man. It's the disrespectfulness of the lack of feel. Well we talked about that you just don't get it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, like your high opinion.
SPEAKER_00I can't stand when kids go hit in a cage and then leave balls in there. Like, who's gonna clean up after you? Your mom and dad aren't here to clean like clean up after yourself, man. Pick up after yourself. My word. You know what really chaps me?
SPEAKER_05Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Chaps you yeah.
SPEAKER_05There's something that chaps me too. I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna might be the same thing. Go.
SPEAKER_00Is when I'm standing there and a kid will just roll a ball at my feet. And it's like, oh, you might as well just put your palms up at me too, and then you hit me with a trifact.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, I never even thought about that.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, I Well, I just start barking at him. I go, Woof, woof. Woof, woof. Am I a dog? Yeah. That's what I do to them.
SPEAKER_00I say something else. I said, there's this isn't this isn't written on my forehead. I I don't know who you think I am, but this isn't happening, but we're gonna go ahead and change that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. But what chaps me, and it blows my mind because it's like kids aren't thinking is when you're whether it's practice or it's usually it I see it the most when we're at tournaments, games, and it's like the kids gotta go to the cage to hit, right? Now I'm the coach that my kids that if they're freshmen, I'll throw BP to them. I'll flip. You know? But my kids that are 16, 17, they need to throw to themselves.
SPEAKER_02But you are one of the best BP throwers I've ever seen. I do like throwing BP. They call you in. You are a mercenary.
SPEAKER_00I do like throwing BP, but it's you two, you two probably are the best two BP. Oh, Jake too. You three are probably the best BP guys.
Mid‑At‑Bat Pitching Change Masterstroke
SPEAKER_05But I have them throw BP to themselves, right? Just because it just builds arm action, accuracy. Marco works for PBR, by the way. They call him in just to throw. And they should, yes, I do. Shout out PBR. I love PBR. Um but it's when kids will go to the cage to hit, right? And not bring the baseballs. When it's like I'm gonna be the first one at the cage to hit. Okay, but you have no baseballs, so what are you gonna hit? What are you like, what are you doing? You know? I always say the smartest guy on the team is the guy carrying the bucket of baseballs. No, Delgado. No, Delgado. Because you like how can you do anything baseball-wise without a baseball?
SPEAKER_02You're telling me, Bub.
SPEAKER_05You know? I had a basketball practice in high school. We forgot the basketballs. We had an entire two-hour basketball practice without basketballs. I don't, I don't want to basketball. It was the worst basketball practice I've ever been part of.
SPEAKER_00I don't want to talk basketball practice thing.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. Oh, yeah, I know. You don't want to talk that.
SPEAKER_00Bad bad bad bad practice.
SPEAKER_05Bad practice. Basketball's just bad vibes right now.
SPEAKER_00You know, we did learn a new play though. I drew myself up in a new play last night.
SPEAKER_02Pat Riley.
SPEAKER_00Liberty. Watch out for it. You know, like the Statue of Liberty.
SPEAKER_02Lady Liberty.
SPEAKER_00The girls loved it. They all go, Liberty, Liberty, Liberty. Oh, they're singing it. I was like, these girls are wild. I thought practice was gonna be great. By the end of practice, three on three turned in me saying, just go play. I'm done watching, I'm done, I'm done. I'm taking a five-minute break. I'm gonna be off to the sideline dribbling basketball on myself. I'm I'm on break.
SPEAKER_02How can these people get you that mad?
SPEAKER_00Uh listen, uh, it's my first time coaching the females, and I'm trying to I heard it's easier to coach.
SPEAKER_05It's easier.
SPEAKER_00It is, but it all there's also like you know, there's different types of different things. Yeah, but there's different types of silliness and goofiness that they go to. I guess. But then you also have to understand, like, in my opinion, this is where I'm trying to figure it out is okay, I've coached my oldest and his team for four years, and you know, I chewed them out at times when they were eight you, and I still get on, like we had a bad practice on Sunday where we've done when it worked out, but I don't really yell at them like I used to, nor do I feel like I have to. So I'm trying to figure out like the fine line of but the females, like once again, to what you talked about, is gaining their trust and respect so that I can pull the most out of them. If I start chewing these girls out and yelling at them, like they're not gonna listen to me anymore. Yeah, plus I was the only coach there, the other two coaches couldn't be there, so I didn't want to just like go off on them. So it was it, like I said, I chose to decompress and take a five-minute break, and I stood off to the side. Sometimes that's what you need. And I said, just go play. You girls go do your thing, go play. We're fine. I'm I'm just I'm not gonna yell. But hey, last thing, last thing we gotta talk about.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00Friday.
SPEAKER_05Friday.
SPEAKER_00Last Friday. Friday's coming.
SPEAKER_05Oh, it is Friday. Yeah. Noon. Zach asked me about it.
SPEAKER_00Noon. Fogo. Oh, yeah. I I got it. So, hey, just a heads up, I gotta tell you. I I I got about only about an hour to an hour and ten I can stay. Kids got a Christmas uh show at school. What time? At two.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's only like a 20-minute show. Can't show up late. Well, then it's not if it's 20 minutes, then you tell them to come to us.
SPEAKER_00I don't think it works like that. Plus, it's Logan's first show, so I could be there for my guy Logan. What is he? Oh, he was the abominable snowman. Hey, Logan was upset at the party. Logan was upset. That's what I'm saying. The abominable snowman is. For those who were at the party, my we played. Ray, love you, Ray. Shout out to Ray Murphy. Always does a great job bringing some fun to the Christmas party, but Ray decided to bring left, right, center to the table with about 30 people playing, and my three kids jumped into the game, and my youngest didn't win. He didn't win, and he didn't really handle it so well.
SPEAKER_05No, I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_00So here's a funny for you, too. Nikki D, big winner. Way to go, Nikki D. Proud of you, bud. Way to take that home. Keep it on the baseball side, my man. And Nikki D, great kid, took all of his winnings, dude, piled up uh three stacks of five dollars and gave each one of the kids five bucks. That's nice. Right? So then they were all happy. Then we get in the car. Okay, we get in the car, and Logan dropped. Well, Logan actually took one of his dollars and walked over to the bar and put a dollar in the tip jar.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I thought I was gonna try to get a drink. No, he didn't.
SPEAKER_00He got himself, he had a Coca-Cola classic. Okay. So he put a dollar in the tip jar, which I thought was nice. Great job, bud. Good, good lad. Way to redeem yourself.
SPEAKER_05Respect.
Bears Talk, Tickets, And Winter Sports Banter
SPEAKER_00Then we get in the car, and somehow he dropped three of the four dollars he had remaining. So for the whole 18-minute car ride home, I heard him screaming about how he lost his money and asking if we could turn around and go back to check for it. We pull in the driveway, dude. I opened the door and the three dollars are sitting right next to the door. And I was like, you spent 18 minutes screaming in the car when your money was sitting right here, dude. Like it's time for bed.
SPEAKER_02So what's his we're missing Fogo de Chow where it is gay?
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, come on, man. I gotta go see the show.
SPEAKER_02Well, who is he?
SPEAKER_00It's for the kids.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what is he?
SPEAKER_00It's not what he is. They sing like each each grade. Each grade does a different sing-along.
SPEAKER_02Like Frosty. That could be one. That could be one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, each grade. Usually one of the one of the uh one of the one of the grades uh sings Dradel, Dradel, Draydle. Um there's a there's a you're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. Logan.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00But you know, so I gotta go to the show. I'll still be there. I'm not saying I won't be there. I will be there for Fogo. I'm just saying I got about an hour, so I won't make the whole performance.
SPEAKER_02Performance? It's not a performance at Fogo. There's gonna be a production.
SPEAKER_05Josh, the way you eat, it's a performance.
SPEAKER_02We're hoping to see all you guys there. Supposed to be like 20 people plus. It's gonna be a twenty five.
SPEAKER_00I'm excited. Twenty twenty five.
SPEAKER_05I'm excited for the salad bar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, me too.
SPEAKER_05I don't get salad, I just get salami and cheese. That's my salad.
SPEAKER_00So well, Margo, thanks for coming on the show, man.
SPEAKER_05No, thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_00We'll definitely have you back. We look forward to you coaching the the boys this summer.
SPEAKER_05I know it's a looking forward to it. Have a blast. We're gonna win 35 games for sure.
SPEAKER_00It's a big summer for him, though.
SPEAKER_0235 games. Yeah, we're winning.
SPEAKER_0035 and 2.
SPEAKER_05We're winning 35. Okay. We're winning 35 games and we're winning two tournaments.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_05Love it. You heard it here first. What's today's date?
SPEAKER_02December. 15th. Mayday.
SPEAKER_07Did the payroll uh double up again?
SPEAKER_05Hey, that was that was a very nice uh wake up that day.
SPEAKER_02That's not that much.
SPEAKER_00For some day, Josh doesn't want to talk about that. But thank you for coming on the show, Marco, and and providing all your insight for these players and and for our listeners. Oh yeah. We uh we love having you here, man. You're you're uh you're a good man. Good man. I know you got your good man shirt.
SPEAKER_05I did get my good man. I don't have to get it.
SPEAKER_00I know it's a little tough for you to wear because it is a little tough for the skin. Material doesn't really work for him, the guy.
SPEAKER_05Gotta wear an undershirt.
SPEAKER_00But we'll have you back at some point. Uh we really want to get you and Jake on here together because I think the four horsemen could really have some fun.
SPEAKER_05That'd be a hell of a show.
SPEAKER_00Um, so hey, we'll get you back out here. But Lord Puck, could you hit us with the ending, Grace?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I have some I have some tips for you, all you hockey guys out there. Tip number one, make sure when you eat, eat hearty, and eat healthy. Tip number two, if you have a good friend, tell them that you love them tonight. And tip number three, when you go to a Christmas dinner with your family, make sure to look them all in the eye and tell them what you really think about them, whether it be good or bad.
SPEAKER_00Well, we appreciate all that wisdom. And with that, Bruceauce, Lord Puck, ow. Good night, Marco.
SPEAKER_04Good night. Get parallel, one line.
