And we’re back! After some technical difficulties, we have a potluck episode coming for you tomorrow! On this week’s episode, we talk about Kacey and Harry’s new music, Timothée Chalamet being an artist who shits on other artists, being Michael B. Jordan stans, Love Story, and so much more!
If you are looking for a Summer House recap, stay tuned! We have our “Flyover Deep Dive” (what we call our TV recap episodes because we are whimsical) coming for you on Tuesday.
I'm Lauren and I'm Emily. And we're Midwest Besties.
SPEAKER_05Hello, everybody. Welcome, welcome. Welcome to this week's Pop Culture Potlock. What you don't know is that this is our second time recording this.
SPEAKER_04We have our first lost episode, unfortunately. And it was all Lauren's fault. Not to point fingers. Just kidding. It was my fault. The mics were on. They just weren't connected to the computer.
SPEAKER_05It's a computer's fault. We all I can say is that the city of Atlantis has nothing on that. After what we went through. It was so funny. It was so good. I went to edit and I was like, oh, something ain't right.
SPEAKER_04There comes a time in every self-produced podcaster's life. We're just girls. Unfortunately, that was that time had come. It was tough. Um, and don't get me wrong, I've fucked up plenty of times before, but usually only we've only lost like sections and salvageable the whole last episode.
SPEAKER_05It was a whole episode. So we are your girlies are up and atom on a Saturday. Good morning. Good morning. Because there's just so much to talk about. You're gonna hear some kids in the background. We're not getting paid to do this yet. So you're just gonna have to bear with us. Um, okay, so we have some really exciting music drops. Oh my god, I cannot. Do we want to talk about? So we had Harry's new album. Uh-huh. And then we also had a Casey Musgraves drop. So do we want to talk about Harry first? Yeah, let's do it. Okay. So we've had like a full week now to sit with this album.
SPEAKER_04Because we are not like I feel like indifferent when we watch like TV or movies, like where we have instant, like the the thoughts and opinions are just like flooding from us with music. I think I can speak for both of us. Yeah. We need time to process. Yes.
SPEAKER_05And we need to do it without the internet telling us what to think. It's hard. It's so hard. It's really hard. Like when Showgirl dropped, I purposely stayed. This is so pathetic. Um, but I like stay on. I stayed off of TikTok and like anything because I was like, I just want to listen to it and form my own opinion because it's just so hard not to let a bias creep in when you see something.
SPEAKER_04I mean, like I'm we're side noting before we talk about Harry. Yeah. But yeah, like I, because of Casey came out. Okay, so when we recorded this the first time, which we're gonna say this a lot. Sorry. Um I like really dogged on Starcrossed, and I have been dogging on Starcross forever, and then I listened to it. I'm like, Oh my god, I know.
SPEAKER_05This is why we're best friends, because I was quite literally listening to it on the way over here. I started listening to it again last night because I was like, you know what? There is this creator on TikTok. I think his name is Sam Murphy, and he's like New Zealand, New Zealander, New Zealand Kiwi. He's a Kiwi, and I love him, and he does music um reviews, and so he and he does like live listens, and I just like I think he's really like cute and funny. And I have to follow him. I love him anyway. So he um a live watch of her video, and then he was talking about Starcrossed, and I was like, I need to go back because like I liked Starcrossed. You did, yes, and I went back and I was like, this is a good fucking record. I know, I know. I don't know what I was thinking because it was an about face from her previous.
SPEAKER_04And there was this just this moment. Okay, I went and saw her, I saw her this summer, and she was like, Justice for Starcross, and it was like justice for Starcross. And for some reason, it like rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know why. I am so dumb.
SPEAKER_05And then I get I mean, I don't know. It's but it's her like she also like that was a breakup. Like that was a camera roll, a divorce. It was so good. Simple Times.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god.
SPEAKER_05I mean, outside of the regular ones, the or not the regular ones, the most notable ones. I mean Breadwinner, Good Wife Horse Wife could be on. Good wife is so good. I mean, I loved Starcross. Like, I loved the title track. Like, I don't know. It that is so funny though, because I was like, this is a good fucking album.
SPEAKER_04I know, I know.
SPEAKER_05But it was in the words of Casey herself, Justice. Justice for Star Cross, but it was so different from uh Golden Hour, which she was like peaking in her career. She won Album of the Year at the Grammys. It was so good, like, absolutely so good.
SPEAKER_04She went from like an underground artist to like everybody was talking about her back to Harry's album.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we're gonna talk about Harry's album first, and then we just talked about Casey. We're really good at this. Um, okay. So you did not love aperture. No. And I was very like apathetic. I was just like, I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. I was like, okay, let's see like what he does. And like for me, now this is funny. The first time we recorded this, I was like, I wish it was more disco all the time, kiss occasionally. And now I'm like, I'm listening to it more and I'm sitting with it more and actually paying attention to like the verses, not just the hooks. And I really am liking the album.
SPEAKER_04I think I'm gonna slowly start liking it more. I so I as an album as a whole, I like it. Yeah. Um, there are some some this is my thought. There are some uh tracks where I just it makes me like nervous. Like I don't like the production. Yes, it's like anxiety provoking. Yeah, because it's so like so. We we were together like all last weekend and we had it like on repeat, and like it I wish I could remember the actual song because at this point we're still like I'm still getting used to like the actual like song titles. And at the same point in time, there was the same song where I'm like, I want to change this, like I can't focus. Yeah. Um, having said that though, like coming up roses is so good, so beautiful. And I think what the what it is for me is that like I am a Harry's voice girly. Like his voice is like the definition of like smooth, the like whiskey.
SPEAKER_05It is crazy how good his voice has gotten. Like how much he's matured and progressed from his one direction days, where like he was not a great singer.
SPEAKER_04I mean, the in the only way I can recognize it, like like hearing someone's voice become better, is Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER_05Taylor Swift, 100%. Like it reminds me so much. They have put the work in, they're totally with their vocal coaches, they are like learning what keys they sound the best in. Um, no, I'm really into it. And I also, now that we're recording this a little bit late too, I love it because I can discuss his BBC One live lounge. How was it? It's so good. So, for those of you who don't know, like BBC does like a live lounge where it's like they typically will invite artists in who have like a recent drop, and they typically are gonna cover, they always cover a song, and they can do it in kind of any style they want. Some artists go really unplugged, really stripped down, some do really fun production. It's just kind of like dealer's choice. I have like such I love watching these. Like I will go down like a crazy YouTube rabbit hole with live lounge performances, like Miley Cyrus's. You have to fucking watch. Oh my god, I will immediately so good. It's like a little bit akin to a tiny desk. Like it's different format, but it's like fun, and you can see. You know, I fuck with a tiny desk. Fuck with the tiny desk. So, anyway, um, he covered Tears for Fears, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. I fucking love Lauren is an 80s pop baby. I love Tears for Vears. I was my husband will be so proud. I like honestly, I like rip on him a lot for like being so obsessed with 80s music because I think it's like such a millennial thing to be like, I'm so different. I like 80s music.
SPEAKER_04Catching straight.
SPEAKER_05I'm not a direct hit. It's a direct I'm locked, the missile is locked in. But it's like very much like I'm not like other girls. I don't, I like 80s music, so I just like give him so much shit for it. But like I do fucking love 80s music. That has a lot to offer us culturally.
SPEAKER_04So anyway, I mean you you can't pull a top 40 from any decade where I'm not like hell yeah, brother. And I have like rain man brain knowledge of this kind of stuff. Oh, you do.
SPEAKER_05So, girl, I'm here for it. Yes. This is where you and Matt are your most united, your strongest. Yeah. And I'm like scared. I'm like, stop. We can't talk about this anymore. We have to move on.
SPEAKER_04It's the only time your husband likes me. Just let it ride, okay?
SPEAKER_05Is it was so good and fun, and I was just like, and watching, and he did a few performances of like his current album too, and they were really, really good. But I find watching an artist do stuff like that makes me connect with them their music more.
SPEAKER_04So it's so funny that you brought that up because I don't think you know this. I became a Harry Styles fan from a Howard Stern interview. Stop it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, I love that.
SPEAKER_04I don't know when it, like, it just came because I'm not like a Howard Stern girly. I mean, like, I dabble in Howard Stern's interviews because some of them are really fucking good. Yeah. Um, I'm not in the manosphere. Uh this is not an all-right. Don't fucking just have some good ideas okay. On my own research. What do we say? Um, but he, I don't, you know, it came up on my on my like for you or my algorithm, and then I was like, I'm gonna sit and watch. I mean, it was years ago, so we're talking like Facebook algorithms. Yeah. Oh god. And I watched his whole performance. It was when Fine Lines had just come out. So good. Such a good album. And he uh Howard interviewed his band. So Oh, I love that.
SPEAKER_05So I'm do you know her his like drummer Sarah. So like No, but I did notice her at uh on BBC. So I was like, he has a female drummer, I'm fucking upset. Oh yeah, I clapped.
SPEAKER_04So like the hairy styles like girlies know Sarah. Like they know, like people see her. Like he will he always says, like, oh, people see her more than they would see me.
SPEAKER_05I love it, and I also think it is such a mark. It it says a lot about an artist when they have consistently the same. Exactly. Exactly. That is a big deal that like he's not talked about enough. Okay, since I've been listening to his new album, it then like Spotify will just like auto-start playing other music. And it's been like his older albums, and so I've been revisiting those, which also just like helps me understand, like l think about his like journey as an artist. And I'm like, you know what? This album is not so much a departure from his previous. And so when I was first listening to it, I was like, this is so, and I'm like, no, I was just thinking about his singles. I was thinking about like his bigger hits, but when I went back and listened to them at the beginning, his sides are always um really heavily produced, yes.
SPEAKER_04Um techno-driven. Clearly, I'm not like a beat. No, I know we're not music people, but we have ears.
SPEAKER_05So I got two ears and a part and two microphones, baby. Welcome to our podcast. Um yeah, so I all that to say, I am really enjoying it. It is growing on me. It just takes me time. I kind of sometimes like we both have to just like sit with it and really decide for ourselves and not let like the internet influence our little pee brains.
SPEAKER_04It was, and it's just being pushed on us really heavily. We talked about this uh on our the OG recording and um the last episode. We had gotten like in a tizzy where we're like, should we go to New York? Should we go to like Harrison Square Garden? And then I had this like total panic attack where it's like thank god you did, I don't even like this first single.
SPEAKER_05And we the album hadn't even dropped, and tickets were going on sale. And I was like, this wait, this is crazy.
SPEAKER_04There are two things about me and like the way me I understand media, and when the rules are not followed, I don't like it. The first episode of a television show should be called Pilot. Don't you come in at me with a title episode name? You haven't, you haven't that's unearned it. It's a pilot yet. Yeah, you gotta get picked up. Second, do not, I'm not buying tickets to a concert where I have not heard the newest album yet.
SPEAKER_05Thank God we put our two half brains together to make a full brain. You have to do that more so than we can because I was like locked and loaded. I was like, okay, like get your you need to like sign up for pre-sale here. And she was like, hey, so I have to talk to you about this. And once she did, I was she's like, I was so worried you're gonna be mad. I'm like, no, I'm actually grateful because I'm stupid. And why would we do this? Is crazy.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we are Midwest girly. We are proud to be from the Midwest, but if we had expendable income, like we would go to New York like three times a year.
SPEAKER_05Oh, a hundred percent to see like concerts and shows and yes, uh I would go like to see basketball games, like to see so fun. Let's talk about Casey's new music. So she started dropping like Instagram, rollout, there were like billboards, it was like call 1-800, whatever, for a real good time. Love it. So the in the aesthetic of it was already very like southern, like Texas Southern, not like so like like like a bulls, old Al Paso. Totally, like there was like a like a northwestern, no, southwestern vibe going on. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And she has said that that she's really because she spent a lot of time in Mexico, that she was really carrying the these Mexican, Texas Mexican, Tex Mex influences into this album.
SPEAKER_05She did an interview with I can't remember, uh, but she like for this this single drop and she talked about that a lot, like really giving credit where credit was due for like the influence that like Mexico and different cultures have had on country music. I love it, and bringing that into her this specific album. So it's been so like we actually after we recorded our last episode, we watched um what's dry spell. Dry spell. We watched the video together and it's so fucking funny. Oh my god, she's it's very cheeky and I love cheeky.
SPEAKER_04So I wrote in my notes like a true return to form, which like I'm not gonna say it's true, not true, because again, what we just talked about was that uh she's always been top of her game. Always. She has experimented a lot, yeah. Um, uh as women in pop music have to do, keep reinventing themselves. And but I am excited about so she on her first two albums, uh Same Trailer, Different Park, and Pageant Material, which pageant material is no album will define my 20s, no album will define probably my love of pop music as as I grow up than that album. And she wrote a lot of it with Shane Mackinelli, who is very, very cheeky, very um like Mind Your Own Biscuits and Life Will Be Gravy. So good. So good. So I as soon as I heard it, I'm like, oh, she's she's back with Shane. I can tell already. I Googled it in front of me.
SPEAKER_05She was like, Fuck yeah, it's him. Akin to how people felt with like Taylor Swift returning to Max and Martin and like literally 100%.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um, because he's a cun he's a country writer, like he lives in Nashville. Gotcha. So um I'm just so excited. And like for me, Deeper Well was so different. And I love Deeper Well is not like Starcross. Like, I love Deeper Well from the get-go. Um, like when she defined it as like, this isn't gonna be what you'd like to dance to. Like, this is gonna be like when you're like, you know, sitting down, reading a book at dinner with friends, and that what that that's what that album has become for me. Yeah. And I listened to it like yesterday, and I just it's just so fabulous. So dumb. It reminds it's like her, it's like her folklore.
SPEAKER_05Like 100%. Because I also love the aesthetic of it. Barefoot, mossy, aesthetic, green, like so beautiful.
SPEAKER_04She even did this like sound of the woods to accompany it that is just like birds and like a strum of a guitar. That's what I imagine. And I listen to it like when I'm studying, or not studying, when I'm grading all the time. I'm a girl. Um so back to this dry spell. I'm ready for a funky tonk, yeah, fun horses and divorces, horny little album. Oh my god. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Lonely with a capital H. If you know what I mean. I know. The video is so cute. You need to watch it if you haven't watched it. It's amazing. It's so cute. But like, I just feel like the beat of the song is very infectious. Catchy. The hook is so good. The verses are so like it's just like it's really good songwriting.
SPEAKER_04This is not one of those singles that we had to sit on. No, we immediately are locked in. This is a hit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So we are really excited. So her full album drops on May 1st. Okay. So let's talk about the Oscars. Which, by the time this releases, the Oscars will have come out already. We will know because they are they are tomorrow Sunday night. We are talking from the past.
SPEAKER_04We are here from the past. And we are here to say, I don't want Timothy Chalomet to win.
SPEAKER_05Hopefully, that little slight man does not win. So we are, we are like Michael B. Jordan, like we are really rooting for him. Yeah. The awards season culminates in the Oscars.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. I do wanna like I wanna backtrack a little bit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it was so funny that we talked about, like, Lauren and I really bonded because in our youth we were obsessed with award shows. And then as we got older, it kind of like it became like, oh, this is actually really pretentious. Totally sexually, like, we don't really like it that much. And in the beginning of this award sh season, when we had our first conversation about award shows, Lauren had mentioned like there are these moments that that I still live for, and we are fully getting that in that moment. Like we had mentioned in our last episode, like we were getting goosebumps.
SPEAKER_05No, I was thinking about literally had chills talking about Michael B. Jordan potentially like coming as a dark horse coming and and because we talked about it, like award season can be so predictable because like again, and this is worth like we've talked about this before, but it's worth like really talking about. I don't think people understand like how much campaigning goes into this. Yes, these celebrities, these actors, these like films. That yes, a hundred percent. Like they hire PR agencies who do this for a living to campaign with like academy voters, with SAG award voters to like really get them to win these awards.
SPEAKER_04And it's getting like everything else in the world, it's it's getting sort of bananas, or at least maybe we just like know about it more than we used to. But like, for example, Nora, um, Mikey, Mikey Madison Madison, who won Best Actress last year, out of nowhere. A24 spent more their budget for campaigning for the Oscars was more than the budget to make the entire movie. Crazy. Like that's nuts.
SPEAKER_05And not to say that like these actors didn't do an amazing job or that like the films were really, really good.
SPEAKER_04They don't like deserve it or whatever.
SPEAKER_05Right, we're not saying that, but like this is the game. And like you have to like Taylor Swift when she wanted to, because she's like desperate for an Oscar and she wrote that original song for cats. No. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02McCavity's not there. McCavity's a ginger cat. He's very tall and thin. You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken thin.
SPEAKER_05So uh Timothy Chalamet has won for Best Actor. He won the Golden Globe. And then we saw at the SAG Awards, most recently, the actors or the actor awards. I still call them SAG Awards. Yeah. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor. Which is like a wild card, right? It was totally totally because it's kind of been Timothy Chalamet and Ethan Hawke.
SPEAKER_04I think it's just also great because it's something that really it's just a different story. It's coming completely from a black perspective and a black POV about black art and the importance of black art. Yes. But then make it vampires, baby. It's so fucking good.
SPEAKER_05Like, I'm watching it this weekend. Like I'm literally tonight, Matt and I'm gonna be like, you have to watch it.
SPEAKER_04You and Matt will love it. Because it's it's also like a campy romp. Yeah. Like it is not like some of the dialogue, like it is it is silly. There's an element of silliness to it. Um, but then you're like, there is this scene, you'll know the scene. It's like this like music scene. Yeah. It's also very different. Oh my god, I'm like literally getting phones thinking about it because I like teared up the first time I saw it. Um, it's just a fun movie, and I love I like to go against the grain that Oscar movies have to be so depressing when you want The Brutalist.
SPEAKER_05Let's talk about that. I read that wiki and I was like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_04I mean, totally uh Paige, Paige, uh, why is Hamnet so sad? I'm gonna see Hamnet. I'm gonna watch it because I want to see. I just want to see what it's all about. Um, but it's like I'm like not looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_05No, because it's gonna be sad. It's gonna ruin your night. It's like, do I wanna have fun tonight or do I want to ruin my fucking night? That's what you have to ask yourself. 100%. But also, like, I we love Michael B. Jordan. So, like, I am if you ask me my favorite TV show, it's Friday Night Lights. Of course. Coach Eric Taylor, Eric and Tammy Taylor. Like, and Michael B. Jordan was Vince, and I think it was like Season four through six. Like the the show had jumped the shark a little bit, but he was amazing in it and he was such a good, like, ugh, he was so good. But like he has so much range.
SPEAKER_04I mean Creed Um The Wire, baby. The wire introduced to him in The Wire. The Wire. Where he, I mean, haunting, haunting performance. Um, Black Panther, of course.
SPEAKER_05And then and he's like directing, he's producing. You want to talk about how you're just like not a Timothy Chalamagne?
SPEAKER_04No, I think he's a little rap boy. Um, so I for me, I have never got him, but then it's like when I talk to people, like, well, have you seen Dune? I'm like, no. When it's like, well, have you seen Little Women? No, it's like that's why you don't get Timothy Chalamagne.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So I was the same way. I was like kind of a hater. And then I watched Greta Gerwig's Little Women. So good. And he was so Lori. Like, it was just it's no use, Joe. We gotta have it out.
SPEAKER_07Like, it's no use, Joe. Joe, we've gotta have it out. I have loved you ever since I've known you, Joe. I couldn't help it. And and I tried to show and you wouldn't let me, which is fine, but I must make you here now. It was just so good.
SPEAKER_05So then after I watched that, I was like, fuck, I get it. And then I do love Dune. Like, I love Dune, and he's really good in Dune.
SPEAKER_00I am Paul Boiti Metrates, Duke of Arrakis.
SPEAKER_05It's not to say he's not fucking annoying and he's like a little roadie.
SPEAKER_04So this is someone who obviously Michael B. Jordan, if we're like comparing the two. Michael B. Jordan obviously is also campaigning for the four awards. But Timothy Chalamet is letting it be known. I want an Oscar. Yeah. This is what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_05Everything he's ever done is because he's like, I want an Oscar, I want awards. Like that's what I want to do. I want to be a prestige actor.
SPEAKER_04And he wants to be this, and he wants to be this perspective that like the Oscars are only for young people because they haven't been for young, especially men. Um, because they keep giving it to the same fucking guys over and over and over again. Um so to that extent, obviously this is a little bit of old news now, but he Timothy Chalamet has come under kind of um under fire for making a comment about he was in this weird town hall with Matthew McConaughey, which more clips are coming out from that. That that interview was sinister. Who did the interview? It was like CNN or something. It was he does really weird. I mean, like and Matthew McConaughey, which is who why was he doing and then he like went on this tangent about like how actually AI acting is the future. Time is a flat circle.
SPEAKER_06Someone once told me time is a flat circle.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. I mean it was so bizarre. Yeah. So um it I think it's so funny. So basically, he said uh he expressed desire to avoid dying art forms like ballet and opera, stating no one cares about this anymore, which I think is so funny to state because I would say like our modern day version of like dying art forms are stories about white men behaving poorly.
SPEAKER_06I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or you know, things where it's like I keep this thing alive even though like no one cares about this anymore.
SPEAKER_04Like the angsty white meaning who's like up for greatness is like is in a ping pong tournament is like this relic like that's so relic of 1970 cinema. Yeah. Yeah. And so I just thought that was the irony, the irony there. The irony there. Thank you.
SPEAKER_05Yes. Um no, it was so so it this this clip, this sound bite in particular really got picked up and he was really taken to task for it. So, like the major opera houses, major ballets were coming out, and like I saw one specifically, I think it was like LA Ballet. They were like, hey, 20% off tickets with code Chalamet. Like it was just very funny. I was like, oh, their marketing department, like they did a good job. Just think it's so crazy to for an artist to talk about other dying art forms.
SPEAKER_04100%.
SPEAKER_05Because it's one of those things where it's like all of these things are important in their own right, but all of those things are also related. It's performance art.
SPEAKER_04Another thing that people picked up was the fact that uh Timothy Chalamet kind of famously lost the newest Spider-Man, Spider-Man 6, um, from to Tom Holland, who is famously a ballet dancer.
SPEAKER_05Okay, and if you have seen his lip sync battle performance of Rihanna's Umbrella, it is so clear he has dancing roots.
SPEAKER_04Crucial, crucial background to modern day pop culture is that lip sync battle.
SPEAKER_05You have if that is a no swipe, like for me. If it comes up on my feed, I'm watching it.
SPEAKER_04I don't care. Am I running late for something? Sounds like I'm gonna be about five more minutes.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna be a little bit later. It's so good. That's your homework. Go fucking watch it. We're rooting for Michael B. Jordan. We want this for him. This would be such a big moment. Okay, we do have some table scraps.
SPEAKER_04Let's get into it to quickly go over. So if you guys are watching Summer House, which we're doing a uh flyover deep dive uh for Summer House because we have two episodes to get through, so we're separating them out this week. Yes. Um, due to again the last episode. Um, but you guys have noticed that Lindsay from Summer House is doing these T-Mobile commercials. I mean, something's gotta pay for that new apartment. My God. And it's just like the same things like the elevated Lindsay and the somebody make me No activated. Activated. Yeah. Activated Lindsay and somebody make me a sandwich.
SPEAKER_03How many sandwiches have you made for me?
SPEAKER_04Which are literally from five years ago.
SPEAKER_05Such a long time ago.
SPEAKER_04So in these commercials, she has this activated Lindsay Barbie doll. And it's essentially like it's the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in my entire life. It's essentially like a Barbie. They bought a Barbie, but then they like paper machade her head, and it's like giving Severance Waffle Party. Like the eat, like the Egan, the Egan giant heads, and it's so horrifying. And then, of course, it's like Peacock, so it's like I have to see the commercial at every commercial break.
SPEAKER_05It is, I have like I keep skipping any, she's doing so many spots for T-Mobile. Like she's huge ad campaign. Her bag baiting. And we have to talk about traders and Rob and Mara being on Watch What Happens Live. It was a great episode. It was so cute. So I don't really watch the whole episodes of Watch What Happens Live. I just watch clips.
SPEAKER_04I I do one thing they like force feed a two on Pikachu after Real Housewives. So if I'm like really lazy and just like laying down, I'll let it run. And then I will watch if there's someone I really like, yeah. I'll I'll watch. Like I watched the uh Sierra and Amanda episode. And I'll probably watch the Kyle Cook episode that just that premiered this week.
SPEAKER_05We've seen clips of that already. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, so Rob and Mara were on. It was very cute. Um, and Rob presented her with her birking.
SPEAKER_04With her birking.
SPEAKER_05And what was so cute about it too? So he went and he was his publicist called the paparazzi, and they uh papped him and Jake Shane. What's that guy doing here? Like what he's everywhere. I what are your feelings on Jake Shane's? I am net neutral towards Jake Shane. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Um I haven't listened, I've I've seen clips of his podcast. Same. I loved his like his origins where he was like pretending like when he was like David looking at the statue of David for the first time. Like I really like all that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_05I do think he's really funny. Yeah. Um, I I like him. I don't even know if I follow him. I I would never listen to his podcast because I think it would annoy me, but I love like watching clips of it. Like I think he's funny and cute. So he and we did learn later, he Rob was on his podcast. Yes. And I don't know if it's real or fake, but Rob was like, Oh, I'm going to get it today. Do you want to come? It was probably fake. And he's like, Oh my god, yeah. So anyway, and so we talked about this in the last episode, and I kept pronouncing Hermes wrong. I was like, Hermes. Um, and Emily was like, It's Hermes. Why am I having such a hard time? So, how do you say it? I was, I think I was saying Hermes.
SPEAKER_04Well, for one thing, like I'm Hermes. I say, as you know, if you've listened to more than one episode of this podcast, I pronounce everything wrong. And I, and it so it was weird. I'm like, is she saying it the right way? Because I'm pretty sure it's Hermes.
SPEAKER_05No, I'm dumb. I'm uncultured swine. Hermes. Hermes. So anyway, so so I talked about this in in the last episode, but you cannot just walk into an Hermes store and buy a Birkin. It is a big deal. So, and they produce such a limited run of certain types of dealer. You have an Hermes sales associate, and you go in there and you buy so many things, and you have to like get to a point where they offer a Birkin to you. You do not get to pick it out. They literally they offer you to buy it. So it is kind of brilliant because it's like they're gonna fucking buy it. Like even if they hate it, they're like, Well, I guess I'm gonna buy this$20,000 like ugly bag. Uh-huh. So it was kind of like, well, how is he gonna be able to do this? Because you you have to like have a relationship. And she wanted like a certain color, she wanted certain hardware, like she had a very particular in mind. Yes. And enter Lisa fucking Renna. Lisa fucking Renna gets it done, baby. She gets it done. So she hooked Rob up with her Hermes person, and he was able to go and they source the bag. I mean, I'm sure like they probably knew like how much publicity was gonna get, and so they like did them a solid by getting the one he wanted. Totally wanted. Oh, 100%.
SPEAKER_04But like he paid, he made full retail for that. And you and like I asked this, we'll cut because we we they get that we have recorded before. No. Um We have to live with our trauma. And you think he paid for it?
SPEAKER_05Like, you don't think like no, I think Peacock? Oh, absolutely not. Peacock is cheap as fuck. Like, Gabby Wendy had to like go on a press tour begging for her like winnings.
SPEAKER_04They like were withholding them.
SPEAKER_05They were like, she like kept like she was on Watch What Happens Live, and Andy like asked her something about traders, and she's like, I just really wish I would get paid. She like and he was like, Okay, we get it, okay.
SPEAKER_06As they give the rose and thorn from the traders. Gabby, what's getting your rose?
SPEAKER_03Rose winning, 100%.
SPEAKER_06Oh, right. Well, that makes sense. Obviously.
SPEAKER_03Everybody knows. Yes. You're at Bravo, NBC Peacock.
SPEAKER_07Yes, okay, you'll get it. You'll get it. Um, what gets your thorn?
SPEAKER_03Not receiving my money. Yes.
SPEAKER_05So, no, I absolutely do not think Peacock paid for it. I think that was Robbie Bobby. I'm obsessed.
SPEAKER_04It was such a great post-show publicity tour.
SPEAKER_05It was so good. So he presented her with this bag on Watch What Happens Live. It was so cute. He like did the whole thing with the glove, the whole deal. And then they were papped leaving the studio, and she was holding her Birkin with a shirt that said I'm dumb question mark because so many people were like, You're such an idiot, you're such an idiot. How could you not have known? So it was just like they just, it's very cute, and I loved it.
SPEAKER_04Uh Lauren, I would say you got a major ick from Chapel Rowan's latest um. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So Chapel Chapel goes to Paris Fashion Week, which is a huge event, like fashion, celebrity. The biggest fashion week just converge truly, like converges. And she goes and she's like going to lunch or dinner or something, and she gets out of her car and she's like has her camera up and she's like, This is what they're doing to me. I can't even like I'll put the clip in.
SPEAKER_01So I'm just trying to go to dinner, and I've asked these people several times to get away from you. Step to the side. Step to the side. This person I've asked several times to go away, and they will not, they're hiding their face because they're ashamed. Because I've asked them.
SPEAKER_05But it's like, what do you expect?
SPEAKER_04And like for me, and I know I'm in the wrong. So, like, I am I am not disagreeing with you. You are right. Like, what did she expect? Like, this is not someone she's not like in her private life, she's not like in fucking Springfield, like trying to go out to eat with her family. Like, she's in she's at pop. Like, the whole point of Paris Fashion Week is to be photographed going in and out of shows and doing things. See and be seen. Um, I will say, I just there is something so performance art driven by her being so unlikable that I just laugh. I just laugh. I think it's so fucking funny how she, and because I mean, if you look at the internet, I mean people like are coming for her.
SPEAKER_05And I'm not coming, like, I'm not, but I'm also just like, you need to understand, like, and I am all for her being like, don't call me a bitch, like, don't treat me like this, give me space. Like, that is totally valid, and there is like such an invasiveness that even if it's like you asked for this, but like there is still like there should be like some basic like humanity amongst like paparazzi, and there just isn't, but it's all it gets to a point.
SPEAKER_04I a hundred percent agree. I mean, so one of one of the like TikToks I saw was like in the latest of Chaperon not wanting to be famous, and it's like maybe she doesn't, like, yeah, maybe she truly just wants to be an artist and wants to be rich and is going to try to.
SPEAKER_05But then you can't go to Paris Fashion Week, or you can go, but you cannot be going like sitting front row. Like, you just can't, like, I don't know what to tell you. Like, you cannot have your cake and eat it too sometimes.
SPEAKER_04And she's trying to, and I am I'm entertained by the attempt.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Emily's not fully caught up on love story, but I am. But something that like I think is a theme throughout this uh season that we've seen. Like, why why don't they have blacked-out SUVs? Why uh don't they have a building with a garage so that they can just get into their cars and leave, like not being seen by the paparazzi? Why don't they have security guards? I don't know. What why don't they have a doorman? Like, what what are we doing here?
SPEAKER_04I I don't know. I have to do more research on what paparazzi was like 30 years ago, what paparazzi was like maybe 50 like or 20 years before that. I mean, we are talking about this was pre-Diana because this is something that like it seemed like Jackie Onassis could just waltz around New York. Right. And and like had paparazzi, but it was very much like uh like oh, give them like oh, can you just give them a shot so they go away? Yeah. Like it was very like there were rules of like, oh, they just want to get their like one picture and then they'll be on their merry way.
SPEAKER_05I don't know because like Diana was like hounded, hold on.
SPEAKER_04When did but UK paparazzi's worst was different than New York paparazzi?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Okay. So Diana was killed in '97. And there was a lot of changes to like paparazzi culture when that happened. Some kind of regulation. Yeah. I mean, the UK is definitely much, much, much worse. It's more rabid. And I do think it was worse in the 90s because like that's all we had. Like, we don't like now, we have there's just so many avenues to access celebrities that they can also control. Yeah. But it is just wild to watch these people who are so extremely famous, like he's just like biking around New York and like like because the newest episode, like, is them coming back from their wedding and they're just like it's the popper, it's like their it's like bloodhounds because they want it's like his wife, and it's like a big deal. And so, but it's just like I don't understand why they aren't shaping their life in such a way that like they can just at least enter and exit their building 100%. A doorman, a doorman at the least. Like, he has to go like unlock the door.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And like, why are you in a town car that doesn't have tinted windows? What are we doing here?
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's crazy. It's it's also one of these things where I read, like, in my knowledge, so none of this is like who knows if it's true, but I read yeah 100%. So I read that um John John was basically like, oh, it's just because we're not married yet. Like once we get married, it will die down. And it got worse, and it got ten times worse.
SPEAKER_05So much worse. I just think like another theme throughout this show, this that we have seen is like he just like I don't think it was malicious, but I do feel like he did not protect her or prepare her.
SPEAKER_04I think the the the care a a character tort, is that the right word I'm looking for? Is that John F. Kenny Jr. is stupid.
SPEAKER_05I mean, when he didn't sign her up for breakfast, like I just don't I'm still mad.
SPEAKER_04I don't I'm still at the restaurant. I mean everybody.
SPEAKER_02I'm still at the wrestler.
SPEAKER_04The hunk flunks, baby. So true. So um, in our like book, book besties, yeah. So one of my favorite, and I'm not alone in this, one of my favorite books I've probably read in the last 10 years is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by God, it's so good. I know. It's like great American novel. Yeah. But like we had talked about like when I said great American novel, you thought like immediately.
SPEAKER_05I immediately went to Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck, and I'm like, well, I'm not fucking reading that.
SPEAKER_04Millennial Gen X Great American novel.
SPEAKER_05It's not trauma porn.
SPEAKER_04No, it is sad.
SPEAKER_05Like it is. I can do sad, but like I'm not gonna do what is that one like really sad one that was just like everything a tiny little life.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_05Like, I will not be doing that.
SPEAKER_04No, we that's a whole other size comment that I will not get into. But like I am I'm so happy I was justified in my opinions on that. Did you read it? No. I mean, you know, I read the wiki, yeah. So did I, and I it like I could not go to sleep then.
SPEAKER_05No, that's how I was after I read the brutalist wiki, too. And then like told you about it. I'm like, don't watch this!
SPEAKER_04I can't do it. No, so tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow is about life. So yeah, sad thing, tragedy happens at first, but there's also like beauty and success and happiness and love, and it's all of these beautiful things. It's trauma, but not trauma-born. Okay, I can get on board with that. Um, so they're doing a film adaptation, which I don't really know how that's going to work because okay, if you look at like that book at face value, it's literally like about people making video games. So it's like I'm I'm interested to see like someone has to have a vision. They can't just adapt. They can't just be like page for page rip.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_04Um, and they got Daisy Edgar Jones to play the lead, and I am just really fucking bummed about this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, not also just the fact that like this character is half Jewish, and I just like in like their like Jewish heritage was like it is is a theme. It's not the theme, but it's like I was giving Heathcliff cast as a white man. I mean, it's not quite that quite as bad, but I'm also sick of seeing this girl on my screen be miscast.
SPEAKER_05Is she a good actress? I don't think so. I mean, we talked about this, but like we saw twisters together in theaters. Awful. She was awful, she sucked the air.
SPEAKER_04I how do you not have chemistry with Glenn Powell in that movie?
SPEAKER_05It seems like an impossibility. But when we tell you. And he was at his mu the riz of in that movie. I mean, he was like a storm-chasing cowboy with like a YouTube channel. I mean, I don't He was Mr. Beast of Tornadoes.
SPEAKER_04I he was in just like I she just fun thing, there is in no way is that bitch from Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_05No, she looks like she is from the fucking like moors. She was from the Scottish Moors.
SPEAKER_04Put her in every Sally Rooney Sadgirl adaptation and I will buy it. But like she's not. And like the fact that she was from like the backwoods, backwater bayou of North Carolina. For one thing, don't be able to start in the book. We're talking about where the crawdad stands. Yes. So it's also, it's just for me. Which I read the book, I did not watch the movie. Uh, same because I was like, for one thing, I why would I want to watch a movie of that?
SPEAKER_05Well, after I read the book, then I I uh it all came out how problematic the author was. And I was like, straight up murdered someone.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05So I was like, well, I guess I'll be skipping land theaters.
SPEAKER_04I just think like it's such unoriginal casting. I think this year we have gotten, in TV at least, we have gotten like, wow, there's some really great talent out there. There is some like with heated rivalry rivalry with this uh Paul Anthony Kelly doing JJ Jr. It's like wow, we really need to broaden our horizons on who we're casting. The pool is too shallow. And I just like think, again, yes, with the the title character of tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is Sadie Green. And she very much is like this like brunette who like every man is in love with. So, like, yes, if we're going through that character, that she could probably play that. But there's probably someone out there that might play it better. Yeah, also she's supposed to be like it's supposed to be between like nine, so the it's like it's span, so it's like 19 to like 39, but it's like maybe someone a little bit younger, yeah. Yeah, um, it was so funny when I told Jacob. He was like, Yeah, she's a real Marlin Blando. I love that. So, so we shall see.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um, okay, I think that'll do it. So if you are not following us on social media, please make sure to do so. We're at Midwest Besties Pod. Just hit 100 followers on Instagram. I saw that. And we are on TikTok. We're working our way up over there as well. Absolutely. Yeah.
