Have you read all of Carly Fortune's books? The only Okay, so I have read Um Every Summer After, Our Golden Summer, and Meet Me at the Lake. I have not read This Summer Will Be Different.

Okay, I have read all of her books. Okay. You are not missing out. This summer will be different, in my opinion, is her worst book. Okay. So my favorite books are I would say One Golden Summer. Okay. In order. One Golden Summer. Every Summer After. Yeah, I'm sorry. Every Summer After. And then Our Perfect Storm.

Good to know. That's my ranking. Okay. Because I liked Meet Me at the Lake more than other people. Oh, interesting. Um I didn't mind. I mean, uh when people start to be like, it's crazy that they fell in love for one day, and then it's like, what are what are we doing here? This is what romance is. It doesn't make any sense. Like calm down. Um we just we talk about dragons. And exactly. Talk about dragons. Where did you rank our perfect storm in that again? Our perfect storm is three. Okay. I like it. I loved it. Yeah, I loved it. I bought it and shout out novel neighbor, and I took it to the lake. And I read it in like three days. Yeah. It's exactly what we need it to be. Okay, the synopsis is I will read it. In our perfect storm, lifelong best friends, Frankie and George face a turning point when Frankie's fiance abandons her via a note on the morning of their wedding. To heal her heartbreak, George whisks her away on a booked honeymoon to Tofino. Sparking a slow burn transition from friends to lovers.

Where do you fall on a friends to lovers trope?

It's like it's hard to ignore it because it is so prevalent, I feel like, in contemporary romance, which is where I what is what I read. Because I'm a contemporary romance girly who does not fuck a lot with sports romance. That's tough. And I don't fuck a lot with like they're making a TV show or making a movie. So like it doesn't have a lot. There's a lot of that. And I don't not like friends to lovers. It there just has to be like you again. Oh my god, that's like one of my favorite romance novels, and that's a friends to lovers. It just has to be done well. I don't agree. I don't like when it's the girl like just being oblivious to the point where there might be a mental disorder. Yeah. And like, and and I I it just frustrates me with that. I agree. I didn't. We are borderline there with this book. Yeah. But she gives enough explanation of like, well, I do have feelings for him, and I did think he was hot, but I didn't think he was interested in me. I also just hate the whole, like, I just love you so much, I won't be with you. Like, I hate it. I know.

Here's the thing, like, I'm just too annoying, and I just like would have to know. Like, I like famously, my husband, like, we weren't dating, and he like dropped me off at my house, like, after like a happy hour that I like orchestrated to hang out with him. And mastermind. I know. What if I told you none of it? What if I told you none of it was accidental in the first night that you saw me? Nothing was gonna stop me. And we were sitting in the car and he like didn't ask for my number. And I was like, Do you want my number? Like, I just can't do it. I'm not, I'm not cool. I don't play it koy. Like, I just don't have it in me.

And so I am Let's get this show on the road. I am a friend to lovers. That is what my relationship is. So that's why I asked you. My husband like asked me out several times and I said no. By ask me out, I mean like when I was like 15. Yeah, I was very young. And and he like, there was no like pining. Like he would ask me out and then he'd ask another bitch out like five seconds later. Yeah. I and then like when I was like, okay, I'm ready to like I'm ready. I like fell in love with him and then was like, let's date. And he was like, Great, uh, just to let you know, we're getting married. So like you, and so I guess there it there was this, but it's not like he was like, I refuse to date you, I'll never be with you. Like, but there was very much like you're there was no yearning, I guess. No, and there, of course, I mean, yearning is lovely, but it's also to the point of like, oh, don't be too yearning. Calm down weird, yeah.

There's also just no way a woman would live up to that. Yeah, no that kind of insane yearning. I know, but I do love it for like the spectacle of it. But I mean, and there was the conversation, my husband had the conversation with me, which is like, I don't want to just date, like, yeah, I'm gonna be serious about you. I'm serious about this, yeah, yeah. Um, and I feel like there was enough of that in there. I just wish I don't know why it has to be like a big secret in so much of these tropes.

Yeah, because it would ruin the friendship forever, and you can't ever go back.

I mean, you can definitely be friends with a guy who's obsessed with you. It's actually quite easy.

I have a really hard time with friends to lovers when they're shocked by it. Yes. Because I'm like, I just feel like I've always known. Yes, like I know how I feel about people. Like I never just like one day have this like awakening where I see this person differently, and I'm like, oh my god, I am in love with you. That would never I've never could never relate to that or experience that.

Okay, I did kind of do that with my husband, but that's rare. Yeah, clearly, and it wasn't like I always it was like I I before I even admitted to myself, like I had a crush on him.

Yeah, yeah. And then like the guy, yeah, I don't know. And then just like not knowing that the guy was interested in you. I'm like, it's clear, it's pretty obvious he's obsessed with you, and just this idea of like all these people around her knew. I know. Okay, so so okay, let's start at the beginning. It opens up with Frankie. Of course, she has a spunky bully name.

Um just to let you know, she's not like the other girls.

I mean, points to Carly for not naming her Poppy. Uh Emily Henry's catching strays right now. But so they it opens up at Frankie's wedding. She is like on the dance floor, but she's a nervous wreck. She is a wreck because George is not there. Her best friend in the whole world. She cannot do this without George. And she's all she can think about. She's like, can't focus, can't have a good time. And then in walks George, and the day is saved. She has the best time, it's amazing. She wakes up the next morning to a note from her fiance saying, I it was it was like Carrie and Burger. I'm sorry, I'm sorry you can't do this. Don't hate me.

The motherfucker's concise. She basically has a nervous breakdown, and they take her back to her parents' house where she is like nursed back to like life by her parents. Um, and then George, who is a reporter. Yes. He is a journalist. A journalist, a very serious environmentalist, yeah, uh, warrior. Yes. And he travels all the time, covering like major stories. So he is not around much, but he comes back from assignment and says, Let's go on your honeymoon together.

So there was a honeymoon that was planned to Tofino. Tofino, which I want to go. I've never heard of before in my life.

So this is fun about Carly's books, is like she is very much like the Anna is a character. Yeah. Ellen Hildebrand of Canada. Like her, like Canada is at the forefront and it's always like on a body of water. So it's like a lake or a river or whatever. And it's or an ocean in this case. Um, and it always sounds like very beautiful and scenic. I mean, it sounds in like summer beautiful.

I know. And it was like the way she described the resort, it was like really cool, lush, and filled with wildlife. And she does a really good job of like this is smut, but yeah, the filler is not just filler, like she is painting a picture. I don't just like scan through the pages because they're poorly written to get to the smut, which I do sometimes do.

Totally. These books, you're not reading these books for the smut. Like, you are really reading her books for like a plot. Yeah. And the smut is a bonus. Yeah. Because like I do, like I love Abby Jimenez, and she's like gotten more closed door romance. Yeah. So anyway, um, so they go to Tofino and he makes this list for her, right? And the list was like, what was it?

So it's like the theme of healing.

So like every day is like he's done all this research. Oh my god, the research.

Every day is like how we were both like, no, we loved it and we're kind of dragging it.

Uh it's just the concepts, I think. Sometimes I like how like the name Frankie. It's like, just fucking name a bitch Trish. Can we just have like a Tracy?

Or let's be real, all of these women are in their 30s. Some of them are named Emily, okay?

A lot of them are named Lauren. Statistically, like literally.

Um, okay, so like day one is wallow, and then like day two is want, and day three is so that he has these uh events scheduled to kind of mimic how she should be getting over her fiance. Mind you, it's been a month. Um another thing, another plot hole was that like her fiance refused to talk to her.

Yeah, he just explained things. He just like left her, wouldn't respond to anything, they were living together. I think like she didn't even have anything, like she had like lived with him and like totally absorbed into his life.

And that was because they're like flashbacks, and there is the these flashback points because the whole book goes through kind of their own friendship, yeah. And it goes to like when she started dating him and and they get engaged uh to this to her husband or her fiance. George freaks out and is like, I it's not like I hate that you're with him, I just hate that you're not yourself. Um probably also that issues with it, yeah. Um, but it says that she was she's a chef and she also has a difficult relationship with her mom. We have some mother wounding, there's some definite mother wounding, which George also has some mother and parent wounding. Like there's always mother wounds in Carly Fortune's book, because there's always really complicated relationships with parents, yeah. And there's oh one of them is always dead.

Yeah, um, but yeah, so it's like days on this on this honeymoon, or yeah, this honeymoon that she's not taking, but of course they pretend to be, they pretend to be, of course. So it's close proximity, it's one bed, one bed, but he doesn't stay in the bed, he stays on the couch, and he's also like ripped, and she like didn't know it.

And she's like, oh my god.

The way they describe him is like hot, like hot, like Superman, like glasses and like curly hair. No, it's Clark Kent. Yeah, I'm imagining David Corn sweat the whole time.

Yeah, yeah. Very like Polly Anthony Kelly with like worn rim glasses, correct. Yeah, so they finally like hook up and like Yeah.

So she basically like after a couple days, she's like, Oh, George is hot and single, and he's single, and we're here, so I'm just gonna be like, let's hook up. Let's I wanna I can't focus on anything else because I'm so attracted to you. So throughout this book, we are figuring out that like she has made she has made attempts to make a move on him, yeah, but he's always been like, no, like one Well, didn't she just like wanna like she's like, I just need to get it over with, help me lose my virginity.

And he was like, No, girl.

Yes, and like throughout this whole relationship, they write letters to each other. So, like Yes, which is cute. So the letter, he's like, I don't want you to try to kiss me ever again. And so she's like, understand. So she has it in her head that like he is not attracted to her, but like we the audience know it's like he's clearly obsessed with her and in love with her, like desperately in love with her. Yes.

He also like another point is that, like, so if you remember, like three years ago there were horrific Canadian wildfires. Yes, and it like a major plot point for George was that he was covering those wildfires and he was like very close to death, like it was awful. And when he was like driving at one point, like out of the fire, like in flames, he called her because he didn't know if he was gonna survive. And he was like, I love you. And to him, he thought that that was and she's like, I love you too. And she took it as like, You're my best friend in the whole entire world. I love you. And he took it as like she didn't, like she's rejecting him because he was saying, I'm in love with you, which like clearly, I'm like, George, no, you fucked up. You needed to say, like, I'm in love with you.

And they and they talk about that where like where she's like, Well, you didn't say in love, and he's like, You know, like you chose not to know, like you chose to be obtuse to like save the friendship, which again, I think makes a good friend. This is why it's a good friend to lovers where they have these conversations, um, so they hook up, it's great, they're like they're in love, they're getting hot heavy, yes, a lot of good. The spice level is yeah, excellent. Yeah, we go to we come to find out, so for some reason the fiance calls, um, calls Frankie and is like, well, this is what he wanted, talking about George. And she's like, What are you talking about? And he's like, Well, you need to, you need to talk to George. Yeah. And apparently George got really drunk the night uh before the wedding and was like the and was just spouting, like, what do you know about her? I know this, and do you know this about her? And he's like, Are you in love with her? And he's like, I love her more than any way you comprehend.

And then basically sabotages correct.

Yeah, which for me, it's like you would immediately just like, why didn't you just say that? Whatever. I know it's it's romance.

We needed a problem to solve, we needed a third act crisis, and this was that.

So obviously, she's like, You didn't tell me that, and you aren't like you didn't communicate that to me, and you let me like sit and stew and hate myself and wonder what I did wrong, and you could have easily been like, Oh, this is why. Uh, so I need some time away. Yeah. Uh, in that time away, she goes back to her parents. There's some mother wound healing.

Yeah, a lot of healing with mommy.

And a lot of whales. There's like, there's like a subplot with whales.

Yeah, her mom was like, it wanted to be like a whalologist.

She wanted to be a whale doctor. Like, I don't know what the fuck you call it. This was the plot where I was like, I don't fucking care.

And her mom followed these special whales, and one of them was they all their one her brother was Moby, the other was like Dick. I don't know. They were named.

And she was named. I'm such a bitch. And one of them was Willie and Shamu.

Okay, moving on. That is important. That is really important in this podcast. Um so yeah, there's like a wheel plot. And so she like makes up with her mom, and there's some healing that she needs to do. And then George comes back. He like gives her some space because he had to do, he was on an assignment.

She also has this like creative breakthrough, and she's like, I'm gonna write a recipe book going around to different Canadian whatever and like sourcing local food and writing like local recipes. I did love that. I know. I do love Corchi. Corchi.

She is like Ellen Hildebrand in this way. It's like she the her descriptions of food are real like it makes me want to like cook and forage and like because they like forage for mushrooms.

Which, like, I don't even like mushrooms, and I'm like, I want to do that. It was so in like every meal is described in detail. Yes. Like even her mom like makes like delicious like muffins. Yes, I loved it. And it's one of those things where like one of the quirks about George that he always like gets like food on his face and food on his clothing.

I just remembered this was so annoying to me. She cleaned his glasses for him. Oh, yeah. So this was just like a little quirk, a little totally normal quirk is that Frankie would always take George's glasses off his face for him when she noticed they were dirty and she would clean them for him. It is so disrespectful to touch someone's glasses. Pop them back on. She just pop them off and pop them back on. That was mentioned throughout the whole entire book. I was so fucking annoyed by that. It is so I don't want your grubby little fingers snatching to touch someone's glasses. Get your fucking paws off my spectacles. What are we doing? I am capable of cleaning them, but did it was it like, oh, I let them get dirty so that you would do it? Like it was one of those things where George was just like that. I'm pretty sure he did. And then they like fucked.

Pretty much. So, like, there's like letter writing throughout this. There's a lot of stuff going on.

Yeah, so it was very uh Joe and Lori coded.

So that is also she neighbors. She even talks about Joe, they talk about Joe and Lori, they watch little women, yeah. Um, so he uh has apparently been saving these letters in a box. This box is mentioned, she just assumed it was like smut or something, but it's actually the letters of him talking about how he's in love with her. So he gives her all the time. Yeah, so like a letter he wrote when he was 13 and he was like, I think I have a crush on you. And then like 16 after he was like, I don't it upset me that you like just wanted to have sex with me in a way to like get it over with. And then it was like uh because they were roommates in college, of course they were roommates, yeah. So it was like I can't live with you and not express touch you and be with you.

I don't get it, and at least like there's some lightness to it. Like, I really can't handle like a Sally Rooney when it's very yeah, when it's taken very seriously. I was like, just tell each other what you're doing. No, I can't.

Um I would recommend this. I would 100% recommend it. Summer read. Though I think we mostly talked about our annoyances with the book. It was like there was the descriptors of like the landscape. I guess this place was the rainforest. I don't know. I'm like, do we need to go to Canada? What's going on up there?

I did not know at all. Like I didn't recognize Canada's game. Yes, like this existed in Canada.

We did a good job. We I mean we made fun of it because you kind of have to make fun of it. But when you are experiencing it, it is swoony. Yeah, it is spicy.

It keeps you like engaged. You want to know what's gonna happen. They have a great banter, they have a really good dialogue. Um, the family stuff is there's some like trauma there that's worked through and talked about. I think Carly always does a good job of that. Yeah. Um, and good resolution. Yeah. I would totally like she is a great. Great summer read. I mean, I devoured it in like two days.

Like so it's not Bobby Finger's books are like very different from his like snarky podcaster persona. Like he's a very serious, gentle person. Like he always ends up actually making like this is the first book he's done because his last book was about like older, like gay guys who like had to go through the AIDS epidemic. Like, yeah. Dark, dark, dark, dark. Yes. Um, and this one was officially like it's a guy who's in like who's 38, who is in New York, who's from Texas, like, so it's very similar to him, and he's a food influencer, and the way he like talks about how stupid his job is is very clearly like how he thinks his podcaster, like celebrity podcaster job is stupid. Yeah. Um, but it's fabulous. It's such a good um, like maybe not satire, but just expose on like how stupid weddings have gotten. Like, because it's like four, it's over it's at this place called the hideaway, and it's four days, and there are lawn games and riddles, and it's a mess.

I was just trying to look up what am I reading? It's like not, I because I don't even remember the because you're in like that book slump. I am in a book slump. I was telling Emily, like I read a real stinker. So it's by Katherine Senner. It was called The Shippers. It was so bad. Like, I literally gave it a two on Goodreads. Why was it so bad? Because the main female character was so fucking annoying. It this was also a friends to lover, actually, really similar to Carly to our perfect storm of like he crashed her wedding and like ruined it, and then they like run away together on a cruise for her sister's wedding. And she was so willfully like stupid and like didn't have agency over herself and would like get herself into these debacles and just be like, I don't know, I broke my ankle because my sister and insisted that I wear seven-inch heels to look sexy. It's just stuff like that where I'm like, Are you a person? Can you say no and just not fucking do it? So for seven-inch heels. I don't know. That was hyperbole, but like it was thinking like that was the because you never know. That could really be no, it was, but there were like high heels that she wore, and like, of course, she can't walk in heels because she's not like other girls.
