Katherine Clark of Fredrick Insurance Brokers: Finding Clarity In Health Insurance Decisions
Meet the Host: Katherine Clark of Fredrick Insurance Brokers
Health insurance shouldn’t feel like a maze you walk alone. We sit down with Katherine Clark of Fredrick Insurance Brokers to trace her journey from single mom seeking flexibility to a seasoned broker who thrives on solving hard coverage puzzles with heart, precision, and plain language. Starting before the Affordable Care Act and moving through today’s shifting rules, she explains how careful analysis—doctors, meds, total cost of care, and network realities—turns confusion into confident decisions.
We talk about what has changed most: narrower networks, age-26 transitions, and the rise of referrals as the lifeblood of a trusted practice. Katherine opens up about running a family business, from her oldest son’s role in community networking to the operational strengths her other son may bring after a law enforcement career. That family fabric shapes how clients are served: direct answers, fast problem-solving, and design of layered solutions when pairing medical with ancillary coverage makes financial sense. The theme is practical empathy—meeting people where they are and building a plan for how they actually live.
You’ll hear clear takeaways you can use this enrollment season. Start with your must-keep doctors and prescriptions, compare networks first, and model your real year of care rather than chasing the lowest premium. Ask about options for the self-employed, small business owners, and young adults leaving a parent’s plan. And remember the most valuable advice of all: you don’t know what you don’t know—so ask early and get a guide who studies this every day. If this conversation helped, share it with someone facing plan choices, subscribe for upcoming FAQs, and leave a quick review so we can help more people find coverage that truly fits.

Welcome to the Frederick Insurance Brokers Podcast, where health insurance finally makes sense. Your hosts, Katherine Clark and John Frederick, are independent health insurance specialists and co-owners of Frederick Insurance Brokers, family-owned, faith-grounded, and serving individuals, families, the self-employed, and small businesses across the country with options instead of headaches. Around here, they're known as Health Insurance Brokers with a Heart, guiding you toward quality care that's simple, affordable, and aligned with real life. So if you've ever thought health insurance is confusing, expensive, and definitely not fun, you're in the right place. Let's dive in and take the fear out of coverage, one conversation at a time.
SPEAKER_02:Great, how's it going with you?
SPEAKER_01:Getting ready for the holidays.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, same here. Now, over the years, I know you've grown a remarkable following. However, some listeners might not be familiar with your full journey. Let's take it from the top. Could you share a little background about your company and what you do?
SPEAKER_01:Well, I got started in this business. It sort of found me. And I got started in this business about 17, 18 years ago, which um doesn't seem like maybe a long time ago, but it was before Affordable Care Act. So the industry was quite different, which means this journey has been very interesting because it's not today what it was, you know, 20 years ago. So I was looking for something new, and it like I said, it kind of found me, and it was real, it was flexible, which was one thing that interested me. And at the time I was a single mom of two young boys, so you know that was important, and then I just fell in love with it.
SPEAKER_02:Amazing, and from what I understand, it's more of a family business, is that right?
SPEAKER_01:Correct. My oldest son ended up joining me later on, as obviously, because he was much younger when I I think still in school when I started. And um, my other son is contemplating it as he retires. He's in law enforcement and he'll retire in about five years, seven years, something like that. And um, so he may join us, but he's more like he'll get he'll keep us all in order on the operation side.
SPEAKER_02:Well, it certainly sounds like it. Now, we know marketing is key to any business's success. How do you market your business?
SPEAKER_01:You know, at this point, because we've been at this for so long, it's primarily by word of mouth and through referral. But my son, uh oldest son, he goes to a lot of network meetings and we um, you know, meet people, small businesses and people from different industries that we help out. And just through, you know, our regular everyday stuff, whether it be church or friends or what have you. So we don't do a lot of strong marketing at this point because it's not necessary, I guess.
SPEAKER_02:Now, when you're not busy running your business, what do you like to do for fun?
SPEAKER_01:Well, these days my number one thing to do is to play pickleball. Um, I also do enjoy gardening, and that's a lot a lot more work than it is fun, but it's also relaxing at the same time, which is kind of hard to think about, but it is. So those are probably my two primary things I like to do, but I'm always up for an adventure.
SPEAKER_02:So, Catherine, you are a very busy person. In your own words, why are you doing this?
SPEAKER_01:Well, I would have to say in this day and time, it's really more to be an advocate, I guess. You know, the insurance industry is very, very different than it was years ago. I mean, just the fact that some people stay on their parents' insurance till they're 26. When I get them, they don't know anything about it. So they need a little bit more guidance and possible hand holding. You know, years ago, what I liked being a broker was being able to find the right fit for people, whether it they had pre-existing conditions or they had some special issues, that was the the analytical part of me that I just loved like putting together a plan. And sometimes that meant like bundling, but putting together that plan to help that person. So there were unbeknownst to people today, there were lots of options before we had the Affordable Care Act. So I think the analytical part and just the idea of, you know, what I can do in five minutes might take somebody else an hour to figure out. So just being able to be that resource and you know, because I'm constantly obviously learning and honing my skills because you have to, because it's changing every day. Well, other people in their everyday life, they do what they do, right? They don't have the opportunity to to do that. So it's kind of nice to be that go-to person, and just you can just hear it on the phone with people where they're just you know, like they're like, okay, because they don't know where to begin. So I mean, I think that's what kind of makes it worthwhile doing every day. You have a sense of accomplishment with that.
SPEAKER_02:Most definitely changing the world one person at a time, right?
SPEAKER_01:Yes, exactly. I always suggest to people just to have that conversation because you never know. You don't know what you don't know.
SPEAKER_02:That is the truth about life right there. Love it, Catherine. We'll catch you in the next episode where we'll dive into some frequently asked questions. Have a fantastic rest of your holiday week.
SPEAKER_01:You too, Sophia. We'll talk to you soon.
