A Purpose-Driven Family Business: Meet Kisha Scroggins of Honey Bunch Bake Shop
Meet The Host: Kisha Scroggins, Owner And Operator Of The Honey Bunch Bake Shop
A family bakery can be a lot more than sugar and sprinkles. We sit down with Kisha Scroggins, a full-time nurse and owner of Honey Bunch Bake Shop in Southwest Fort Worth, to explore how a neighborhood spot became both a community favorite and a training ground for meaningful work. From birthday cakes to everyday cookies, every item comes with a purpose: creating a safe place for her daughter, who has an intellectual disability, to develop skills that build confidence and independence.
Kisha opens up about the early days baking for family events, the moment someone offered to pay, and how farmers markets gave her the proof to grow. She walks through practical marketing that actually works for small businesses—social posts, streaming ads on platforms like Paramount, local radio, and even a cupcake sign outside to catch the eye. We talk operations, too: how her kids cover daytime shifts, how she jumps in after hospital hours, and how extended family keeps things humming during busy seasons. It’s an honest look at balancing caregiving, career, and entrepreneurship without losing the heart that makes a local bakery feel like home.
The core of the story is inclusion. Kisha designed simple, repeatable systems so her daughter can check out customers, help with inventory, and master tasks step by step. That approach showcases what accessible, patient-centered workplaces can look like—and why they’re good business. If you love small business stories, community-building, and the real tactics behind local growth, you’ll find plenty to savor here, from brand storytelling to customer experience and local SEO basics.

Welcome to Sweet Talk, the Honey Bunch Bake Shop Podcast, broadcasting straight from Southwest Fort Worth's favorite family-run bakery. Each episode we'll peek behind the ovens with owner and operator Keisha Scroggins and her crew, the folks baking up birthday cakes, holiday treats, and everyday sweets for the neighborhood. So settle in.
SPEAKER_02:However, some listeners might not be familiar with your full journey. Let's take it from the top. Could you share a little background about your company and what you do?
SPEAKER_01:Uh yes, ma'am. So it's just myself and a couple of my kiddos who help out. Um, so um my son and my daughter are there during the day. I'm there in the evenings. Um, and then I also have um other kids who help when they're not in school. Sometimes my mom comes and helps out if there's a lot going on, but it's just uh a family, uh small family business.
SPEAKER_02:Amazing. Now we know marketing is the key to any business's success. How do you market your business?
SPEAKER_01:So we do a variety of things. So we're on social media, we've done um streaming ads on like Paramount, we've done radio ads, um, we even just put out a little cupcake right outside the bakery when we're open. Um, so we've tried several things. We're we're open to a lot of a variety of things to try to get our name out there.
SPEAKER_02:Now, when you're not busy running your business, what do you and your family like to do for fun?
SPEAKER_01:So we don't have a lot of time for fun, unfortunately. So uh we have a high school senior, I also still work full-time as a nurse. Um, I have a middle schooler, and then a couple of adult children still at home. Um, we do spend time with each other on Sundays when we can. I have a grandson, he's 20 months old, so we like to run around with him, and so he'll go with us on Sundays to church. So um, so what little bit of time we have, we just like to hang out and and watch him learn his colors and his letters and do all that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, do you see him helping at the shop when he's older?
SPEAKER_01:If the shop is still open, he will have a choice.
SPEAKER_02:Now, Keisha, I know you're a very busy person. It certainly sounds like it. In your own words, why are you doing this?
SPEAKER_01:So the bakery is open. Um, the impetus was my uh oldest daughter graduating from high school. So she has special needs, she has an intellectual disability, and so the goal was to give her somewhere safe to learn some job skills. So it's not that it would be completely impossible for her to work somewhere else, but it would take a very patient manager and group of people working with her, um, who, you know, won't get upset with her if they have to repeat something. And then um, you know, also it would it would just be difficult for her. And then the other reason is just so that she can learn things other than sweeping and mopping. Those things are great. She needs to know how to do those things as well. But it's important for me, um, as her mom, to give her the opportunity to learn other things as well. Like she um, we have uh a system that's easy for her to use so she can check people out, she um helps put things in inventory, and she just wouldn't get those kinds of skills someplace else.
SPEAKER_02:So, Keisha, why a bake shop?
SPEAKER_01:Well, I like to eat uh and I like to bake. So before this, I was just baking for family events, and I never really thought about trying to turn it into a business until one of my family members asked me to make something, and she's like, and I'll pay you. And I was like, What? That's awesome, I'll do it. And then after that, I thought, well, maybe I should try to do it. So I started just doing farmers markets on the weekend um while working full time, and so that's how we got started.
SPEAKER_02:Amazing. Well, you know, food is always a language of love, right? Definitely love it, Keisha. We will catch you in the next episode where we'll dive into some frequently asked questions. Have a fantastic rest of your day.
