name that he used in the Old Testament, uh, connected to the needs of the people of Israel. 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:56.879 We find that in the book of John, that Jesus also connects this name to our greatest needs. 00:01:56.959 --> 00:02:00.480 He does that seven times for the last uh month, month and a half. 00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:17.520 We've been walking through each one of those, not only those needs or issues or problems we have in our life, and Jesus' uh uh answer to those things, but you need to understand that today is a significant day. 00:02:17.919 --> 00:02:28.400 And the reason that it's significant is it's when our world celebrates an incredible event called Easter with the resurrection of Jesus. 00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:44.800 It's an incredible event in that here we have a 30-year-old man who finds himself on the cross because of the way that he lived his life and the ministry that he did in uh a portion of his life. 00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:46.960 And he dies upon the cross. 00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:56.080 They take him off the cross on Friday, they put it very quickly put him into the grave, and then Sunday morning, Jesus' resurrection happens. 00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:58.479 It's an incredible miracle. 00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:00.319 I know we use the word miracle a lot. 00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:04.159 I know it's kind of muddied down, but it's crazy, everyone. 00:03:04.560 --> 00:03:09.919 Just the idea that the resurrection, the physical resurrection of Jesus happened. 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:14.400 It was crazy back then, it's crazy today, everyone. I'm a I'm a believer in Jesus. 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:49.439 That that claim, if it's true, is so crazy over the top that for believers or followers of Jesus or Christians, it's so significant that every day is resurrection day. 00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:50.960 I need you to know that. 00:03:52.000 --> 00:04:01.280 Now, one of the things as the leader of this group of followers of Jesus, you hear me say this all the time, every day is resurrection day. 00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:05.120 Like a special day, one day out of the week is not enough. 00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:10.879 We celebrate every single Sunday that Jesus rose from the dead. 00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:16.560 It is the greatest significant event in human history. 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:23.519 And listen, if it's true, if it's true, it changes everything in your life. 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:33.360 Not only does it change the the present, it also changes your your past and definitely changes your future. 00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:52.639 If Jesus' resurrection is real, your sins can be forgiven, your mistakes, your missteps, your misgivings, your misunderstandings, your mishaps, miss mess ups have no binding authority in your past, present, and future. 00:04:54.560 --> 00:05:03.279 I heard a um a story about an elderly couple that went to Jerusalem on a tour, if you will. 00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:10.959 And and as the this husband and wife uh were on this tour tour, they were constantly fighting and bickering. 00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:18.319 You kind of, I think you understand those kind of couples that that's how they're just constantly fighting and jabbing at each other. 00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:21.600 And really the husband was kind of the source of this. 00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:25.120 He was just a grumpy old goat that was never happy. 00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:28.879 You know, those I'm kind of reaching into that season myself. 00:05:30.720 --> 00:05:34.399 And uh, it takes years to build up that kind of anger, everyone. 00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:38.319 So they're always they're they're always they're always fighting on this tour. 00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:46.720 Everyone can kind of recognize that this husband's kind of overbearing and the wife is just, you know, all smiles, but she she she argues back and forth. 00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:54.160 And unfortunately, this husband has a heart attack and dies on the tour in Jerusalem. 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:56.160 And so that just changes everything. 00:05:56.319 --> 00:05:57.199 The tour's off. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:05:59.279 And so uh the government gets involved. 00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:12.000 He's a foreigner, and so they hook the wife up with a funeral director, and so she has a meeting with the funeral director and says, uh, man, I need to get my husband back to the United States so I can bury him. 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:15.120 And he says, ma'am, this is this is a very, very expensive. 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:22.160 It's gonna cost$7,000 to ship your husband all the way home so you can bury him uh in the States. 00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:37.120 He says, I have a better option that people love to do, and that's I can bury your husband in Jerusalem, the land of the Messiah, the land of the apostles, the land of the prophets for$200. 00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:43.120 And she's she looked at the the funeral director and said, No, no, no, no, no. 00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:47.680 I want to make sure that I bury my husband in uh the United States. 00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:51.199 And the funeral director is like, man, this is an incredible opportunity. 00:06:51.360 --> 00:06:57.040 Not not everyone can say that my husband or or my family uh was buried in Jerusalem. 00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:04.720 And she says, No, no, no, I get it, but you need to understand 2,000 years ago they put a man in a grave and he was resurrected. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:06.720 I don't want to make that kind of mistake. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:10.160 I want And it really comes down to something super important, and and you need to understand that the reason, and we'll dive right into this really, really importantly in just a moment, but there is a great need in our lives, probably the biggest, the biggest need. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:52.080 And Jesus in John, uh, throughout John, is making the claim to be God. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:59.440 You'll see in just a moment that that throughout John, he is using the name of God. 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:04.559 The name of God in the Old Testament as God Himself names him. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:06.240 The Israelites aren't naming him. 00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:07.759 God names himself. 00:09:08.159 --> 00:09:10.399 When asked, what should we call you? 00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:13.360 He calls himself the I Am. 00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:16.320 And that sounds weird to us. 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:25.360 It sounded weird to the Hebrews who heard it first, because it's always, it was always connected to a great need that Israel had. 00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:37.840 When Israel was hungry or needed some kind of provision in their life, he would come in and say, I am the God Jehovah Jirah, meaning I am your provider. 00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:47.440 And likewise, Jesus does this in John, claiming not to be a prophet or a good teacher. 00:09:47.679 --> 00:09:50.320 He's claiming to be God. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:54.720 We find this throughout the Gospels that he's claiming to be God. 00:09:54.799 --> 00:10:03.279 We've looked at that over the last few weeks, as I told you, to those in John chapter 6, to those who are spiritually hungry. 00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:07.600 He said, I am the bread of life, to those who are in spiritual darkness. 00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:23.120 He says, I am the light in John 8, to those in John 10, to those who feel spiritually lost, he says, I am the door, to those who feel unloved, he says, I am the good shepherd. 00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:31.360 And when he made those claims, he he always backed them up with a miracle. 00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:48.399 It's one of the things you should recognize that Jesus is constantly walking into different situations with the purpose of healing people and redeeming people, supernatural power, but it's with a purpose. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:11:04.879 Jesus isn't just randomly trying to find people to heal, he's just taking opportunities to teach you something about him and the new kingdom that he's bringing in to establish here on earth and for eternity. 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:08.480 And likewise, this is what's going on. 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:15.200 And the issue that Jesus is tying this to is an issue we all deal with, and that's death. 00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:26.559 Death, though we may ignore it when we're younger, is something something we all deal with on a regular basis. 00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:31.840 Eventually we're gonna we're gonna show up in the same place that everyone shows up. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:40.000 It's as sociologists say, one of the greatest needs or one of the greatest fears that we have is death. 00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:42.639 That eventually we're all going to arrive there. 00:11:42.799 --> 00:11:46.720 The going rate for Americans is 100% death. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:48.559 I don't know if you've heard that before. 00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:49.840 We all die. 00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:52.480 We all die. 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:58.240 We all come to a place where we look death in the face. 00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:07.679 And so John says in at the first part of chapter 11, John, John repeats what Jesus is saying. 00:12:07.840 --> 00:12:15.120 Jesus himself is saying this in a very, very sad situation that we're gonna walk into. 00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:20.159 A funeral that Jesus goes and and is and is a part of. 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:27.120 He says, I am the resurrection and the life. 00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:30.240 I am the resurrection and the life. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:32.480 That's significant again. 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:41.039 That Jesus is saying, I am the God that can take care of the death problem in your life. 00:12:41.279 --> 00:12:46.240 Not only can I resurrect your life, I am the life. 00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:59.360 A crazy, auditious claim that he would make because we all have the fear of death, and maybe that's where you're at. 00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:09.679 Maybe you've experienced, maybe you're not even older, but someone really close to you has died, and it's left a void in your life. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:15.519 It's a pain you've never thought you would ever experience. 00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:24.559 Maybe it was your wife, maybe it was your child or schoolmate that you grew up with. 00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:28.240 We all are faced with it. 00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:39.440 And I think there's even a maybe a secondary need that is displayed here, and that's the disappointment of God. 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:55.039 Where you're faced with the circumstances of sin and this world and destruction and disease. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.679 And you prayed because you believed in God. 00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:10.320 You prayed, you believed, and you trusted in him in nothing. 00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:13.519 So you lost the job. 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:16.879 You lost your husband. 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:20.080 You're 00:14:42.639 It reminds me of a an interview that I saw with a very famo famous media mogul, Ted Turner. 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:52.480 If if you're young here, you don't know who who he is, but he created uh TBS and CNN uh in the 80s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. 00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:55.759 He was kind of like the Elon Musk of the 80s, can I say it that way? 00:14:56.000 --> 00:15:05.759 Multi-billionaire, very powerful individual at the time when TV was at its heights uh in the 80s and 90s. 00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:12.799 What most people don't know is that Ted was a very devoted Christian when he was a young man in high school. 00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:14.159 His family went to church. 00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:18.320 Matter of fact, Ted felt like he was called to be a missionary. 00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:32.720 But when Ted was 15 years old, his younger sister Mary, her name, um, oh I'm sorry, her age was 12, and she came down with a terrible, terrible disease called lupus. 00:15:34.399 --> 00:15:44.399 And Ted said that I would come home from school immediately, and I would sit with her in her bed and hold her hand and try to comfort her in some way. 00:15:44.799 --> 00:15:57.360 And he said, I I watched my 12-year-old sister, whom I love, go through pain and suffering for like two years, and eventually she she passed away. 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:11.039 And he said, as a young man, I distinctly remembered my father who stood up and said, If this is the kind of God that I serve, I no longer want to serve him. 00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:18.960 And Ted told that story, and then he said this in the interview. 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:30.639 I was taught that God was love and God was powerful, and I couldn't understand if that was true how someone so innocent should be allowed to suffer like that. 00:16:33.840 --> 00:16:40.080 I think we've all experienced pain on some level. 00:16:41.519 --> 00:16:51.840 And though we even looked to God, and we even maybe sang this song, Jesus Take the Wheels, but all we heard was crickets. 00:16:54.559 --> 00:16:56.720 God, why didn't you show up? 00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:01.360 Where were you when? 00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:04.400 How can I trust you after? 00:17:05.440 --> 00:17:08.480 And maybe these are the kind of questions you're asking. 00:17:09.039 --> 00:17:17.200 But I think you need to understand that Jesus is about to answer them in John chapter 11, and that's the good news today. 00:17:17.839 --> 00:17:19.200 That's the good news today. 00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:28.079 Now, if you turn with me in John chapter 11, the first part, you're gonna see that something horrific is going on with some very dear friends of Jesus. 00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:30.880 Jesus is with his disciples. 00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:34.079 He has friends Mary and Martha and Lazarus. 00:17:34.559 --> 00:17:39.839 Jesus loved everyone, but he did have kind of a really close circle with individuals. 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:47.359 We don't know why Jesus loved Mary and Martha and Lazarus, but he considered Lazarus an incredibly close friend. 00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:50.799 Uh, some scholars would say they all kind of grew up together. 00:17:50.960 --> 00:17:57.440 They supported his ministry, they followed Jesus, they were uh a part of his inner circle. 00:17:57.599 --> 00:18:13.119 And we find that Lazarus is sick, like really sick, so sick that it's to the point where uh his sister Martha gives word, go find Jesus, because at this time Jesus is already doing miracles. 00:18:13.279 --> 00:18:17.279 The blind man can see uh people are being raised from the dead. 00:18:17.440 --> 00:18:21.599 He raises a little girl, multiple, multiple, multiple uh miracles. 00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:23.119 And so the word is out. 00:18:23.279 --> 00:18:27.039 Martha is a part of this, Martha and Mary are part of this inner circle. 00:18:27.119 --> 00:18:33.119 They know Jesus and who he is, and so they send word to Jesus, he's quite a ways distance away. 00:18:33.279 --> 00:18:43.200 And so the the the the the the the the herald um the the person with the message arrives and they tell Jesus, listen, Jesus, Lazarus is sick. 00:18:43.279 --> 00:18:46.640 I need you to come in here and do what you do. 00:18:48.160 --> 00:18:51.599 Come in and take care of my brother, the one that you love. 00:18:52.960 --> 00:18:59.839 And we find in verse 5 again that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:08.880 And so when he heard that Lazarus, Lazarus was sick, he stayed two days longer in the place that he was. 00:19:09.359 --> 00:19:12.880 Now, those two things don't make a lot of sense, do though, do they? 00:19:13.359 --> 00:19:17.920 He loves these people, they're part of his family, if you will. 00:19:18.160 --> 00:19:24.079 And yet when he hears this incredible need, he hangs out for two more days. 00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:31.839 Matter of fact, and you can imagine Martha and Mary waiting. 00:19:32.559 --> 00:19:33.920 Where's Jesus? 00:19:34.079 --> 00:19:34.960 Where's Jesus? 00:19:35.119 --> 00:19:36.480 I heard he walked on water. 00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:39.519 I'm sure he can triple speed his walking. 00:19:39.920 --> 00:19:41.680 Like, what's going on? 00:19:43.359 --> 00:19:45.119 And their brother dies. 00:19:48.559 --> 00:19:52.559 Matter of fact, word comes that the brother dies. 00:19:53.440 --> 00:19:58.240 And it's interesting because the disciples are like, dude, what's up? 00:19:58.720 --> 00:20:00.000 Why are we hanging out here? 00:20:00.079 --> 00:20:01.920 We we we could have made that. 00:20:02.960 --> 00:20:05.920 Like, what in the world, Jesus? 00:20:06.559 --> 00:20:17.279 You could easily, I just I saw you do a miracle where you fe fed like 10,000 people in a prayer, and you just let this happen. 00:20:17.839 --> 00:20:21.200 And it's interesting because Jesus responds this way. 00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:26.559 He says, for your sake, I'm glad that I was not there. 00:20:27.279 --> 00:20:30.000 So that you may believe. 00:20:31.599 --> 00:20:32.880 Believe what? 00:20:38.319 --> 00:20:39.519 Believe what? disciples, he's talking about you here. 00:20:58.480 --> 00:21:00.400 That you would believe. 00:21:04.960 --> 00:21:12.880 So Jesus finally arrives at the household of the two sisters, and you can imagine. 00:21:13.119 --> 00:21:16.559 Matter of fact, I believe scripture says that Martha went out to meet him. 00:21:16.720 --> 00:21:20.400 What that means is she's mad and she's double timing. 00:21:20.880 --> 00:21:22.000 Down the road. 00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:23.359 She's gonna have it out. 00:21:23.440 --> 00:21:24.400 She, I don't know. 00:21:24.559 --> 00:21:30.240 I would like, if I'm gonna yell at Jesus, I'm gonna yell it down the road a ways, not wherever my family is. 00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:33.119 Not only Martha, but Mary also. 00:21:33.680 --> 00:21:35.359 Jesus gets it double. 00:21:36.720 --> 00:21:49.119 And Martha runs up to Jesus and asks the question that I think we're all asking in this world of confusion and pain and destruction. 00:21:50.079 --> 00:21:59.759 Martha says to Jesus, Lord, if you Jesus, if you had been here. 00:22:00.720 --> 00:22:03.759 My brother would not have died. 00:22:05.359 --> 00:22:18.319 If you, Jesus, who claim to be the resurrection and the life, if you were here, my heart wouldn't be broken. 00:22:19.039 --> 00:22:21.680 My brother wouldn't be dead in the ground. 00:22:23.920 --> 00:22:41.200 Scholars say that there's really four things that are going on here that I think we need that really tell us about what Jesus, the message Jesus is trying to give you, me, and the people that are at this funeral. 00:22:41.839 --> 00:22:45.279 The first thing is just simply the word tears. 00:22:45.440 --> 00:22:46.799 Can I say it that way? 00:22:48.720 --> 00:22:52.960 Jesus doesn't score or scold Martha and Mary. 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:58.720 He even doesn't really reveal what he's about to do. 00:22:59.920 --> 00:23:08.960 We just find when Jesus arrives and everyone is mourning, and the sisters are weeping over their beloved brother. 00:23:09.680 --> 00:23:15.759 Jesus takes a moment in all of this and he weeps with them. 00:23:17.839 --> 00:23:29.279 What's significant in John chapter 11, verse 35, that we find that there's a portion of scripture. 00:23:29.519 --> 00:23:32.559 Matter of fact, it's the the shortest portion of scripture. 00:23:32.799 --> 00:23:38.240 I had to memorize five
