Pressure has a way of revealing what actually runs our life: the fear of people or the fear of God. We walk through Acts 5 as the apostles are hauled before the council, accused of spreading dangerous teaching, and threatened for speaking the name of Jesus. What stands out is not just the conflict, but the clarity. The leaders worry about public backlash and protecting their position, while Peter and the apostles keep pointing to the risen Christ, repentance, and forgiveness of sins.
We talk honestly about what “We ought to obey God rather than men” means and what it does not mean. It is not a spiritual slogan that excuses ego, impulse, or harsh speech. It is the fruit of surrender to Jesus, where we respect governing authorities until obedience would require disobedience to God’s Word. From there, the passage turns to Gamaliel’s surprisingly wise counsel: if something is merely human, it will fade, but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it without fighting God Himself. That warning also forces a heart-check about zeal, religious certainty, and the subtle ways our flesh can masquerade as God’s voice.
The apostles leave beaten and rejoicing, then return to daily preaching Jesus as the Christ. We pray for the same Holy Spirit boldness, endurance under persecution, and love that refuses to quit.
