What did Jesus truly accomplish when He said, “It is finished”?
In this episode, Johan Toet explains how the cross completely removed the separation between God and humanity. Jesus became everything we were so that we could become everything He is through Him.
Because of His sacrifice, believers are now restored into relationship with the Father. God lives within us through the Holy Spirit and promises never to leave or forsake us.
Yet many Christians still struggle with feelings of distance from God. In this teaching, Johan explains why that happens and how we can learn to live daily in the reality of Christ within us.
This message is part of the series “In Him.”

Welcome to One Gospel, bringing you the full truth of God's Word. Clearly explained. Together with our host, Johann Tuit, we'll unpack scripture to understand what's written and grow as a disciple of Christ. Ready to take notes? Let's open the Bible.
SPEAKER_01Hi there and welcome to today's episode of One Gospel. I'm your host, Jon Toot, and as always, I'm excited to share the Word of God with you. So in today's teaching, we will continue this mini-sery that I've started, you know, called In Him. And basically, it's a sequence, you know, on the mini-series that I have taught on Restoration. And it's coming out of my book, The God of Restoration, which is really an amazing, amazing book. And I really want you to, you know, go and download it, you know, on our website. You know, it's just to understand, you know, that God, you know, is a God of restoration. And I believe this is a must-read for those, you know, who experience you know brokenness or you know, rejection or fear or those kind of things in their lives, you know, and I believe this book will help you to understand and show you, you know, uh how you can overcome all that in Christ Jesus. Amen. And so um in the previous episode, I have been teaching on you know how Jesus, you know, was never separated from God. Jesus and God are one. I mean, it's God the Father, God the Son, and then God the Holy Spirit, and so these three are one. And so Jesus came and then he laid down his deity, he laid down his glory, he laid down his majesty, and he became in the form, he came in the form of a bondservant. In other translations, it says he took on the form of a slave and he became like man, and then he became obedient and humbled himself, um, you know, even to the death of the death of the cross. And so Jesus laid that all down, he became like one of us, he became Jesus the Son of Man. So Christ became Jesus the Son of Man, and then Jesus, the Son of Man, you know, came to do something. He came to take upon himself all our sins, our iniquities, our sorrows, our pain, our rejection, you know, our sickness, you know, our everything. You know, the punishment, the dischastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we were healed, you know, spirit, soul, and body. And so, you know, he took upon him all that. And then when he did that and he gave himself on the cross, you know, there was a moment, you know, where you know God had to turn away from Jesus because he became sin for who knew no sin, became sin for us, so that me we could become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, 2 Corinthians 5.21. And so God turned away from him for a moment, and that moment of separation, I was describing, you know, how that has must have felt for Jesus to be separated for a moment from his father. Because that is something that we cannot comprehend, it's something that is unexplainable, but he became sin, and God needed to turn away from a moment, and then Jesus cries out in Matthew 27, 46, he says, Eli, Eli, Lama Salachtani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I mean, he was never forsaken of God, never, ever, ever, you know, and I and I truly believe that it just was a moment in time where Jesus felt how it should be to not be in the presence of his father, to not be one with the father. He must have felt how our state is before we come to Christ. Because we are lost and we are separated, and we are, you know, not in communion, we are not one with God, we are not unified with God as it's supposed to be, and that we are not because of the fall of man, and so sin separated us from this oneness with God, but then Jesus became sin for us, and so he became for a moment separated from God because of the fact that he became sin. Man, I mean this is a lot to take in, and it's a lot to really grasp that and understand that, but that's the price that my God paid for me. You know, we were being without being aware, we were separated from God through the fall, but then Jesus brought separation for us. Man, Father God, thank you so much for this teaching, and I really pray that it's gonna be a blessing to those who hear it in Jesus' mighty name. Amen. You know, I mean, Jesus became sin so that you and I could become righteous. Jesus became a curse, and I'm talking about Jesus, the Son of Man. He became a curse so that you and I could be blessed. He became poor so that you and I could be rich. He became weak so that you and I could be strong. He became sick so that you and I could be well. He became a slave so that you and I could become sons. He died so that you and I can live, because he came to bring life and that in abundance. He who has the son has life. But he became everything that we were and everything that we deserved, which was punishment and chastisement. He became everything, he took upon him everything, you know, took upon himself everything that you and I and the rest of the world ever, ever, you know, should have done wrong, could could will do wrong, you know, the sins that we do and all our sicknesses, whatever sickness it is, whatever disease it is, whatever it is that you know is coming against mankind, you know, he took it upon himself. And the punishment, the thorn of God, bam, he took it upon himself. That's why there is now no more condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. You know, now that Jesus has done all that, you know, God is now no longer angry, there's no longer thorn, there's no more no longer punishment, there is no chastisement, there's no condemnation. Because my God, my king, my savior, my redeemer, my lord, my rabbi, he took it all upon him. So he was separated from the Father so that you and I could be one with the Father. He came to restore that which was lost. Remember, that which was lost was the oneness, the unity with God the Father, and he came to restore that. And praise Jesus that he did that. Praise Jesus that he came and gave himself for you and for me. What a blessing and what a grace, you know. And so Jesus cried out at the cross in John 19, 30, and he said, It is finished. Man, those words you just repeatingly are going around in my mind, and I meditate on it day and night, and it will not depart from my mouth, nor will it depart from my heart. You know, I will keep it always in front of me. Jesus, who's been crucified, who died and then rose again on the third day, he said it is finished. I need to tell myself every day, Johan, it is finished. Because you know, you can get into that trap of religion, you know, and works and performance and all that stuff, thinking that you can add anything to what Jesus has done for us, but it is finished. It's finished. Man, what a rest, what a peace, what a joy. Man, isn't that beautiful? That it is finished. Man, I'm preaching to myself, and now because of his sacrifice, because Jesus did all that, because he was separated, and we now can be one with God, because Jesus did that, we will never, ever, let me repeat that again. We will never ever have to be separated from God ever again. Now I'm gonna let that sink in for a moment because you know there are so many people in the body of Christ, and again, I never say things to judge or to reject, it's just facts that I'm stating. There are so many people in the body of Christ who feel that they are not one with God. They feel like maybe God has forsaken them, maybe he took away his spirit, maybe they are no longer, you know, in his uh, you know, pleasant in his eyes, they are no longer, you know, uh children in whom he's well pleased by their actions or things they did, and so on and so forth. There's a lot of people who do not feel like they're always one with God, and there is a reason why, which I will get to. But the truth is that in Christ Jesus we will never have to be separated from God ever, ever again. We have been brought back into the garden, and now the garden is in us. I am now in God, and God is now in me. He is I'm now in me and I am in him. He will never leave me, he will never forsake me. That's what my Bible teaches me in Hebrews 13, verse 5 that my God will never leave me, never forsake me, will never let me go. You know, Jesus says, they will never snatch you out of my hand. And you know, and and God is more than everybody, nobody will snatch you out of the hand of my father. That means, you know, just like a little kid, you know, I've got here my brother who's holding my hand, and then there is, you know, there is my father who is holding my hand, and nobody can snatch me out of their hands. Nobody. His hand is resting upon me, his hand is guiding me, his hand is my shadow for the sun by day and for the moon by night. His hand will lead me, his hand will save me, his hand will restore me, his hand will bless me, his hand is resting upon me, hamps me in from before and behind. Man, his right hand comforts me and uh, you know, gives me support and leads me, man. And nobody will snatch me out of the hand of my God, you know. I don't know about you, but nobody will snatch me out of the hand of my God. Never, ever, ever again. You will never leave and forsake me. Let me just read with you quickly Psalm 9139, because I'm just want to share some truths and then I'm gonna ask you the big question. So, Psalm 139, which is a beautiful psalm, you know, and um I read uh English always in different translations, and then we have the which I believe that in New King James Version is like the best one, but then I also love the NIV because it simplifies it for me, because English is not my first language, and then you know I can I can say, Oh, okay, you know, this is what it means. No, the Holy Spirit can talk clearer to me uh sometimes through that translation, but then you know, um then there is the amplified, which is like amplifying, really makes you understand sometimes some words, or what it really says, or what it really means, and so that really blesses me, and I really like that, you know. And uh, so I I in Dutch I only read one Bible, but in English I read different types of translations, and they're all a blessing I have to say. But Psalm 139, it's it's you know, it's um in Dutch I can quote you know a lot of Bible verses and quote a lot of Bible stories and chapters and things like that, but in English, you know, I I really need to read it, and I know what it says, and I know where it is, but I need to read it to quote it to quote it right. So I'm gonna read Psalms 139, and I'm gonna read from verse 1 till verse 10. It says, O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up, you understand my thought afar off, you comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You have hatched me behind and before and laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me. Wow, what a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful song. But you see, you cannot escape God. That's what I read in the Bible, is that you cannot escape God. You cannot outrun God, you cannot run away from God in the sense that wherever you run, he will be with you. It doesn't matter where you go, it doesn't matter what you do, it doesn't matter how you feel, it doesn't matter what you believe. If you are a child of God, he is there with you forever and ever and ever. He is Jehovah's Shama, He is right here right now. He is right here right now, with you, with me, and He will never leave you, and He will never forsake you, and you cannot hide from Him. It's impossible. That's what He says. He says, you know, um, where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? Verse 8. If I ascended into heaven, you are there, made my bed in hell, you know, in the darkest places, you know, in sin and all this crazy stuff, you know, whatever I'm doing, you know, but but you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, it doesn't matter how far I go, it doesn't matter how high I go or how deep I go, it doesn't matter how I try to hide myself, it doesn't matter how hard I run, you're always there. God is always there. He will never leave you, he will never forsake you. John 14, 17 says that the Holy Spirit is within you forever. Jesus says that if you keep his commands, you know, and that means that you believe on him, you accepted him, you repented, you know, you were baptized, baptized with the Holy Spirit. He says, Me and my father will come and dwell inside of him, John 14, 23. And in Luke 17, 21, he says, you know, the kingdom of God is within you. And I'm a temple of the Holy Spirit, he dwells within me. He's not going anywhere. He's not a scared little bird, you know, that runs and poops on my shoulder, you know, when I do something wrong. You know, just like uh I just have one wrong thought, you know, one wrong action, one wrong move, and then pum, he's gone like a scary little bird. No, he's not a bird. It's the spirit of God who created everything that God spoke. This resurrection power spirit dwells within me. I am his temple. He will never leave me, he will never forsake me, he will never leave you, and he will never forsake you. Never. You really gotta get that into your system. You cannot escape him, he is there, and you can never lose good, lose God. He is always with you, and he is always within you, and he's always for you and never against you. And if God be for us, then who can stand against? He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world. So he's always within me because I no longer live, but it is now Christ who lives within me. You see, so I have this presence of God, this fullness of God within me. God is always in me, and I never can be separated from him. I don't know how more clear I can make that to you. And everything that God is is within me. If God is peace, then the peace of God is within me. If God is love, then the love of God is within me. If God is favor, then the favor of God is within me. If God is a healer, then his healing is within me. And I can go on and on and on and on. Everything that God is that is within me, and I have the very nature of God, because I'm now born of God, no longer born from blood, flesh, and the will of man, talking about my physical body. No, I'm born of God, spiritual man, and he is within me forever and ever and ever. What a powerful truth, and that really should encourage you, you know. But then how can it be? Here comes the big question. How can it be that I not always experience his love, his joy, his rest, his peace? How is it then that not all of his promises are becoming yes and amen manifested in my life? How is it possible that I still can struggle, that I still can feel uh rejected, taking offense, and feel insecure and depressed? Because, you know, I've been through all that stuff, and sometimes I still deal with that. I'm not gonna sit here, you know, and say that I never experienced rejection or that I never take offense. I do. I don't need to, but I do, you know. And I know what the word of God says about it. So, how is it possible that I do experience those things, that do with that we experience that kind of stuff? How is it possible that we can feel rejected and insecure and taking offense, that we don't experience peace, joy, and love and you know, and all that stuff? How is it possible? If that what I said before is true, that God will never leave us, never forsake us, that he's always in us, that he's always for us, that he will never depart from us, that his Holy Spirit dwells within us forever, for eternity, forever and ever and ever and ever and ever. How is it that if he is always in me, that I do not always experience all those things that come with the fact that he is in me? How is it? That's the big question. Because God is always in us, but we are not always in him. And I'm gonna let that fly for a moment. God, his presence is always in us, but we are not always in him. There is a condition to always experience his love, his peace, his joy, to not be rejected, not feel rejected, do not feel depressed and oppressed, and to not take offense and you know, do not be led by emotions and circumstances and everything that life can throw at you. To not be found in all those things. There is a condition, and that is that God doesn't only have to be in you, but you also have to be in him. You also have to be found in him, and that's the that's the truth. In him you will find rest and peace and joy. In him you find courage, hope, healing, restoration, comfort, life, and that an abundance. In him you find everything that you need. You know, Colossians 1 19 says that there is in him all the fullness, and so when you are in him, you will experience all the fullness. When you are in him, you will experience everything that he is and everything that he provided for, everything that he has established, everything that he had paid for by the death and the resurrection of my Lord Jesus Christ, when we are in him, so we are perfected in him. So if we do not experience, you know, peace, if we do not experience rest or restoration or joy, you know, or comfort and love and all that stuff, if we do not experience that, what God is within us and for us, then we are simply not in Him. Man, that changes the story, right? I mean, that gives an answer to all those questions that we have. That why are we not experiencing this? If the Word of God says this, you know, why do I feel like I have this Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde syndrome? You know, like, you know, I know what the word of God says, but this is what I feel, you know, and I and you know, I'm like, I'm like this, this, this, this yo-yo, you know, going up and down and going up and down and going up and down and in and out and in and out. You know, there is this song, you know, and said, you know, you're you're you're up and you're down, and you're in and you're out, and you're high and you're low, and you're yes and you're no, you know, that's sometimes really described me perfectly. You know, I was like, that's me, you know. Because, you know, it's like we know what the word of God says, but then we also see and feel and experience the things that are, you know, that life throws at us and circumstances. We encounter, you know, and we are like becoming this Dr. Jack or Mr. Height, you know, we're like, what is it? You know, is it this or is it that? No, it's always the word of God that is true. It's just simply that you are not being found in him. Everything is true, and it's all already in you, you already got it, you already received it, it's already yours, and he never leaves you nor forsake you. But for you to experience all of that, you have to be found in him. And if you are not found in him, but you are found in your circumstances, you are found in your situations, you are found in you know whatever life throws at you, then you will not experience all those things that are within you. Because you are not tapping from that, you are tapping from what the world throws at you and what your soul feels and all that stuff. And that's a powerful, powerful truth. And I really know that this is gonna bless a lot of people. It really blessed me, it changed my life. You know, when we live outside of his presence, and that means that his presence will never leave us nor forsake us, so that's the absolute truth. But we can decide to go and focus on, you know, our circumstances, on you know, the things that we deal with, you know, and life, you know, and and and our sensory, carnal man, then we are living outside of his presence. Even though he is right here and he never leaves you nor forsake you, you turn from that and you focus on something else, and you live there with your emotions, you live there with your feelings, you live there with all your senses, instead of living, you know, in his presence, living in him. Man, there is fullness of joy in the presence of the Lord. That's powerful. The word of God says in Colossians 2, verse 6 and 7, as you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so ye walk in him, rooted, and built up in him. Now, I want to continue this, you know, but my time is already up, and so I don't want to just stop in the middle, but I just want to close with this in this episode and then continue in the next episode. That the matter of the fact is, the truth of the word of God is that God is because Jesus became separated from God for a moment and became everything that we were, so that we could become everything that He is. We are now through His sacrifice, through His uh to what He did, we are now uh you know, uh God is now completely and fully 100% within us. He is always with us, within us, and He will never leave us and He will never forsake us. You cannot get rid of God, you cannot escape from God, you cannot walk away from God because He will always go with you. Now, you can walk away and do not experience Him because you are not within Him. He is within you, but you are not in Him. You know, you and so that's what I've been teaching on that there is, you know, a truth that you maybe do not experience all that God is, and that all that He has established for you, and all that He has done for you, and all that is available for you, and all that is true about you and about Him within you, and you not experiencing all of that, and that's the simple little fact that He is always in you, but you are not always in Him. And so we need to make a choice. And I will go to that in the next episode, and I really hope that you were blessed by it. I hope to see you next time. God bless you. Bye-bye.
