In this episode, Johan Toet shares a powerful teaching about what it truly means to abide in Christ.
The Bible says that through Jesus, the old life has passed away and a new life has begun. Yet many believers still find themselves controlled by fear, pressure, or the circumstances around them.
Why does that happen?
In this message, Johan explains that God always lives within believers, but we are not always living consciously in Him. When we focus on circumstances instead of Christ, we lose sight of the peace and freedom that already belong to us.
Through Scripture passages such as Psalm 91, Galatians 2:20, and John 15, this teaching reveals how renewing our minds with the Word of God helps us live from our true identity in Christ.
When we remain rooted in Him, we begin to experience the fruit of the Spirit, the rest of God, and the protection that comes from living in His presence.

Welcome to One Gospel, bringing you the full truth of God's Word. Clearly explained. Together with our host, Johann Tuit, we'll unpack scripture to understand what's written and grow as a disciple of Christ. Ready to take notes? Let's open the Bible.
SPEAKER_01Hi there and welcome to today's episode of One Gospel. I'm your host, Johan Tut, and as always, I'm excited to share the Word of God with you. And so in today's teaching, I will continue this minisery that I started called In Him, which goes really well with the other sequel that I have called Restoration. And it's um there are topics that I write and go in depth with also in my book, The God of Restoration. You can get your free copy in the link below. So, you know, if you really want to, you know, go deeper into it. I really want to encourage you to get that. I believe it's really going to be a blessing for you. And so I've been teaching on um, you know, just to do a little recount, I've been teaching on, you know, how uh Jesus, the Son of God, you know, who was never separated from God from God because he says he and he, me and the Father, we are one, you know, and so Jesus, you know, who is God, he um laid himself down, he laid down his deity, his glory, and his majesty, and then became like a bondservant and to be equal with man. And then Jesus came and to to to bear, yes, to bear everything that uh you know was on you and was on me, talking about our sicknesses, weaknesses, pain, griefs, sorrows, depressions, bondage, sin, you know, all that stuff, all of it that was on us, you know, and the chastisement that we should receive for our sin, you know, and the chastisement that was needed for us to have peace, all of that was upon Jesus. Jesus became everything that we were so that we could become everything that he is, and so Jesus was separated from a moment for from God while he was hanging on the cross. He called out, Eli, Eli, Lama Sabactani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? You know, and the moment you know that he said that, God turned away from a moment for him. So that's why he said that. And he was separated from God for a moment so that we could be one with God again, so that Jesus could restore what had been lost, and that was our oneness and our unity with God the Father. And so then I shared on you know how you know God will never leave us nor forsake us, how he always is with us, and how he lives within us. And so I've shared, you know, a lot on that. And so I really want to encourage you to go back to those episodes. But then I also uh asked the big question then how is it possible that if the word of God says, and God can't lie, you know, if the word of God says, you know, um that God is always with us and in us, and he will never leave us and or forsake us, and his spirit lives in us, and you know, all his goodness and his kindness and everything that he is, and everything that he established for us, all his promises, you know, uh that are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. How is it that we do not always experience that? Why we not always experience love, peace, joy, why we not always experience, you know, the things that God says that we have and that we are now in him. And so and I've shared on that, and I asked the big question why that is, and then uh you know the answer was that God is always in us, but we are not always in God, and so that makes the world of a difference. When you are not found in him, when you're not rooted in him and not built up in him, you are found in something else, and when you are found in something else, like your circumstances, like in the world, that's why the Bible says, in the world you will have tribulation, but in me you will have peace. So when I'm found in the world, when I'm found in my circumstances, when I'm led by my sensory men, my carnal men, my natural men and natural circumstances, and I do not live from the spirit, and I do not renew my mind, you know, my soul, you know, my mind with the word of God, and live by who I am in the spirit, then I will have tribulation and I have all these challenges and all these things that I'm struggling with, and I wonder why that is when the word of God says something else. That's because I am living outside my intimacy with God the Father. I am not within him, he is within me. I'm just I'm just going there while he goes with me and he says, Hey, turn around. I'm right here, so you can experience all that I am. So that's really, really powerful. So, Father God, thank you for this teaching and thank you that we will continue in it, and it's gonna be a blessing for those who hear in Jesus' name. Amen. And so I want to read quickly with you to Psalms 91. Psalm 91, which is a really amazing, amazing Psalm, which I believe that most of the people start really to proclaim and do, and I don't know what, you know, when during COVID everybody was pro was proclaiming Psalm 91. And I don't really think that everybody understood the condition that 91 has. So I will go there with you. Here it says in Psalm 91, verse 1, I'm reading from the New King James Version, it says, He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty God. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in him I will trust. Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you shall take refuge. His truth shall be your shield and your buckler, and you shall not be afraid for the terror by night, nor by the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walk in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday, or a thousand may fall at your side, and a ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked. Now, before I'm gonna continue this reading, you know, I'm gonna read it in the me form. That's the way that you could read it also, but then I'm gonna uh give some comments on that. So it says, He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty God. Now, there are a lot of people during COVID proclaiming Psalm 91, but they are not dwelling with him. They are not hiding, you know, in the secret place. They are not abiding under the shadow of the Almighty God. They are not dwelling with him. They visit him once in a while and then they go again. They are not constantly found in him, rooted in him, and built up in him. And so only those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High God, and those who abide under the shadow of the Almighty God, they will find refuge. And so I will say of the Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in you I will trust. Surely you shall deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence, and you shall cover me with your feathers, and under your wings I shall take my refuge. Your truth shall be my shield and my buckler, and you sh and I shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor by the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday, because I dwell in you, because I am found in you, because I am rooted in you, because I am built up in you, because I am in you. A thousand may fall at my side, and a ten thousand at my right hand, but it will not come near me. Only with my eyes I will look and see the reward of the wicked, because I have made the Lord who is my refuge, even the most high, my dwelling place. You see the condition, because I made him my dwelling place, because I am found in him, because I am rooted in him, if those things will come not near me, those things cannot touch me. Because I am found in him, I will have peace and joy and all that stuff. So it says, No evil shall befall me, nor shall any plague come near my dwelling. Why? Because I'm dwelling in my father, I'm dwelling in God, I'm found in Christ. You know, and he shall give his angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways, and in their hands they will bear me up, and lest I will dash my foot against the stone, and I will tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent, I shall trample on the foot, because he is my dwelling, because God is my dwelling. That's why he does all that. He says, Because you have set your love upon me, your focus upon me, your heart upon me, and you incline your ear to me and my words and my sayings, and you're found in me and rooted in me, because of that, therefore I will deliver you and I will set you on high, because you know my name. You shall call upon me, and I will answer you because you dwell within me, because you are found within me. I will be with you in trouble, and I will deliver you, and I will honor you, and with long life I will satisfy you, and I will show you my salvation. Man, beautiful, powerful, amazing. When I dwell with him, when he is my dwelling place, when I take my refuge in the Lord, who is my fortress, when I seek his face, when I seek his presence, when I spend time with my Father, when I'm constantly found in Him, in Christ Jesus, built up and rooted, you know, and grounded within him, you know, and my focus is on the things of above and not on the things of below. And I'm found in his presence, then nothing can come against me, nothing can harm me, nothing can trap me, nothing can deceive me, nothing finds place within me that's not of God. And he will protect me, and he will bless me, and he will comfort me, and he will make sure that nothing can happen to me. You know, he says that you know, I will tread upon the lion and the cobra, they will not tread upon me because I have my dwelling within the Lord, and there is no one that dares to come near the presence of God that is, you know, demonic. They flee and shiver only by hearing his name. Hallelujah. And so I have a choice. You have a choice, my brother or my sister. You have a choice whether you're gonna be found in him, dwell in his presence, or you're gonna dwell in your circumstances, the world that you live in, the things that the news is saying, the government and all that trash. Where are you gonna dwell? You have a choice. You can be seated in him, rooted in him, take your refuge in him, dwelling in him, or walk in your fleshy, carnal, natural man. It is a choice. Now, in your carnal, in your old man, you know, the old that has been passed away, that's done with, over with, it's not there anymore, but you can still live there if you do, if you make that choice. There, you there the behavior of others can still determine, you know, how you feel. Their opinion can still determine how you see yourself. You know, then others have still power and dominion over you when you live by what you feel in your circumstances. Your past, that was, all that has been passed away, can still pull you back in old pain, in all trauma and things that happened to you and unprocessed, you know, stuff where you dealt with, you know, and and it can affect you deeply if you live, you know, in your circumstances, in your old man, in your carnal man, in your natural man. Your circumstances and events can then still rock your world and determine your happiness. And this is possible because you're not living in him, but you're living in your flesh, in your sensory, in your old man. But that old man is dead. Let me say that again. The old man is dead. You know, Galatians 2.20 says that I have been crucified with Christ, and it's no longer I who live, but now Christ lives within me. And as far as that I'm living in the flesh, I live by the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. You know, I am dead. You can say to yourself, I'm dead. That old me is dead, it's gone. I don't have to live there anymore. See, if it's dead, you can kick it, you can beat it, you can spit on it, you can you can try to do whatever you want, but it's dead. You cannot deceive it, you cannot, you know, um you cannot uh misled it, you cannot tempt it because it's dead. Hallelujah. I'm dead, and you're dead, man. All old life has been passed away. Behold, all things have become new. I'm now a new man. My old man is dead. Let's go to Romans 6.4 quickly. Romans 6.4. So Romans 6 4, it says, Therefore, we were buried with him through baptism into death. This is not talking about water baptism, but the baptism into Jesus' death. That just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so, we also should walk in newness of life. Not walk in oldness of life, walk in your natural circumstances in your sensory man and all that stuff. No, to walk in newness of life. That means you can walk now from the spirit and live from the spirit. You know, God wants you to be found in him, because in him there is perfect love, and his perfect love will cast out all fear, all rejection, all pain, all grief, all sorrow, all kinds of bondage and addictions. It will cast it all out. His love will clean the slate immediately when you are found in him. He will cast it out. You know, all old things have been passed away. Now look what it says in Ephesians 4 22. I mean, that's a really powerful, that really changed my life. Ephesians 4 22 says that you put off concerning your former conduct the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lust, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness. So put off concerning your former conduct the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lust. You have to make a choice. You can put off the old man, that is the that is the dead old you. You can put it off, but you have to make a choice. You need to put it off. Now, how do you put it off? You know, you also can make a choice to put on the new man that was created uh created according to the image of God in true holiness and and and uh righteousness. So you can you can make a choice to put off the old and not live in death, and put on the new and live in that. How do you do that? By being renewed in the spirit of your mind, verse 23. If you renew your mind with the word of God and understand who you are in Christ Jesus, what he has done for you, and who you now are in him, and who he is now in you, and how you can always be found in him, rooted in him, and build up in him, how you don't no longer have to live in circumstances and by feelings and your sensory man and all that stuff, you know, then that's the way you put off the old, and that's the way you put on the new. And it's an automatic, you know, um uh result that will come from when you start to renew your mind with the word of God. And so it's you know, it's like a computer, you know, your mind works like a computer. You have to put off, you know, have to put out all the lies, the trash, the viruses, and everything that you have been uploading your whole life, you know, the moment you come to Jesus. You have to get all that trash out. How you do that? By putting the truth in. You put the truth in your system, and then you know, you get defragmentated, you know, you get rebooted, you know, you you get you know updated and whatever, you know, and then you have been your hard drive is gonna be cleaned by the truth and the lies going out, and before you know, you are back to factory settings and you start to function the way that you're supposed to function, amen. And so, you know, we are already we know in back to factory settings in our spirit, but also your soulish man, you know, your carnal, natural man, has to be rebooted and brought back to factory settings, and that happens by the renewing of your mind to put the word of God, the truth in so that the lie can go out. And you know, you need to understand that your old man is an enemy of your new man. Your old man keeps you away from a life of rest and peace in him, a life of oneness with God. You know, because it is focusing on whatever is wrong and whatever you feel and comes against you, that is not in line with what the word of God says. You can decide every day, you know, whether you're gonna live in what in your circumstances or you're gonna live in him, and then experience, you know, according to what you are choosing to live in. If you live in the world and you live in your sensory man and all that stuff, then you will experience all the stuff that comes with it. If you live in him, then you will experience all that comes with it. It's very simple. In him, in relationship with him, you know, in unity, his nature will become manifest in us. Then there is no anger, there's no frustration, there is only love, peace, joy, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, because that's the fruit of the spirit, Galatians 5 22. So, and in him we can find true rest. That's why he says, Come to me. You know, Matthew 11 20 and 28. All that are uh burdened and heavily laden, come to me and I will restore your soul. You will find rest for your soul, I will restore your soul. If you are weary and burdened, if you are broken, if you are damaged, if you are afraid, if you are bond, if you're lonely, sick, weak, anxious, whatever, come to me and I will give you rest, thus restoration. If you come to me, if you come and run to me, if you are found in me, if you are built up in me, if you are rooted in me, if you are in my presence, Jesus says, stay rooted and grounded in me. That's what Paul says, that we need to be found in Christ, Philippians 3 9. We need to be found in him, not in our own works, in our own abilities, in our circumstances, you know, and intentions, well-intentioned pursuits, you know, not found in our carnal sensory men. We need to be found in him. In him. Now I've got a few more minutes and I will really try to get this true. Uh so please uh read with me uh John 5 verse 1 and 15 verse 1 and 8. John 15, verse 1 and 8. John 15, verse 1 and 8. Yes, John 15, verse 1 and 8. Really powerful. So here it says, Jesus says, I am the true vine, and my father is the vine dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away, and every branch that bears fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. You cannot bear fruit if you do not abide in him. I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit. For without me you can do nothing, zero, niente. Okay, and so if anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire and they are burnt. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. So, you know, you need to be found in him. And if we continue to read, he says, My father is glorified, if you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples. As the father loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my father's commandments and abide in his love. We have a choice to abide in him. Now, I was in prison, you know, as many of you uh you know um probably already know, you know. But when I uh I was in prison for about five years in Portugal, and I still didn't know whether I would go back to Holland to do the rest of my time there, you know, there was this own country once you have been convicted. And so I was already there for five years. I could have been back in Holland for after two years, but I was already there for five years and still didn't know when I'd when I would get out of prison. And so finally it came true. I was uh flew I flew from the island uh you know where I was in prison to the mainland and Lisbon, you know, and then I needed to sign with the judge, and I said with it within six weeks you will be back in the Netherlands. And so I was rejoicing those six weeks, and after six weeks became eight weeks, eight weeks became ten weeks, and nothing happened. And so we started calling and calling and calling, you know, all those all those in um instant, you know, government things and whatever, justice departments. And then they told us, you know, that because you know I have been convicted for giving a false name also in Portugal, but that's not uh you know, it's not a crime in the Netherlands. So that they said, we can take you for all the things that you have done, but we cannot take you back for the false name that you have given. So I could come back as a criminal, I could come back, you know, as a leader of an organization, you know, whitewashing money, you know, and all that good. I could come back as a manufacturer of ecstasy, but I couldn't come back because I gave a false name. And so my my deportation to go back to my own country was canceled. And my world crashed because now I had to spend 12 years in Portugal, then I would be extradited to my country and I would do another six years in my country. So that would mean, you know, 18 years, you know, after grid. And so it was really a bummer. And I I, you know, my world crumbled. And I went into my prison cell, you know, and I took the Bible, and my whole world was, you know, kicked away under my feet. But I took the Bible, I opened it up, and my eye felt on John 15, verse 7. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you. Man, I've read that Bible verse like a thousand times. I am abiding in you, and you are abiding in me. So whatever I desire, it shall be done for me. I desire a miracle. I want to go back to the Netherlands. I want to do the rest of my time in Holland in prison so I can be close to my family. It's it's time. I've spent five years here. I want to go back to my country and do the rest of my time in my country. That's what I want. And you say it shall be done for me. I was rejoicing in myself. I was so, I was so happy. That word came alive for me. I went to bed, woke up the next morning, and I was calling my wife, and somebody tapped me on the shoulder and said, Hey, you are going away Monday. And I said, and it was on a Friday, I said, Where do I go? He says, You go to Holland. Hollanda, is what he said. Man, I jumped up and down, ran around the corridor, you know, I was shouting and praising God, fanning him. And he said, Thank you, Jesus. You know, and then that weekend took longer than the five years I already spent there. Couldn't believe it, you know. And then on the Monday they picked me up, they put me in a van, and there was somebody else in the van. We're going to the airport, and that guy said, you know, I'm so lucky to go back to the Netherlands today because somebody else would go, but his case was cancelled, so I took his place. He was talking about me. I wasn't supposed to be in that van. And so then we went with the van. After hours, we went to the airplane, we went into the airplane, and the the wheels lifted up and we lifted from the ground and we were gone into the thin air. And then we arrived in the Netherlands, and I couldn't believe man, the relief was so huge. You I cannot express that I that I had left that behind and started a new phase of doing the rest of my sentence in prison still, but in my family, uh in my country with my family nearby and all that stuff. And so, you know, they led me before the prosecutor, and the prosecutor said, What are you doing here in the Netherlands? You are not supposed to be back here because we canceled your case. I said, Well, maybe you canceled my case, but my God didn't cancel my case. He said, If I abided in him and he abides in me, I can ask whatever I desire and it shall be done for me. And he did. Here I am, you know, blame it on God. And so, but they couldn't send me back, obviously, because you know I am a Dutch citizen. And so, bam, God just changed it around, he turned it around, he did an amazing miracle in my life, you know, that you cannot even comprehend how great that is, you know, and you know, this is a school example of what I'm trying to bring to you today. That God says, if you abide in me, all that I am, and all that I have, and all that you desire, that will be in the will of God because you are in him, you only desire the things of him, you know, it all will be done for you. And you will all you will experience it, will become manifest in your life, and you will have that love and the peace and the joy and the restoration, everything that you're seeking for your life. You will have it because it's already there, it's already within you, but you have to be found in me the way that I'm found in you. Man, that's powerful stuff, you know. That's what he says, you know. Jesus says, Find me, then you will find rest for your soul, then I will make your way prosperous. Joshua 1.8 says, you know, that we need to stay in his words and not let it depart from our mouths. Then we will make our way prosperous and we will act wise. So, how can the word of God become flesh in you? By abiding in him. You have to abide in him, and when you abide in him, then whatever he is, and whatever already has been bestowed upon you and imputed in your account, you know, and is already there within you, you will experience in all the facets of your life. Now, my time is up again, and I got more to say, but I'm hopefully gonna see you in the next episode. But for this, um this was it for today, and I really truly hope that you were blessed by it. I love you, God loves you, and I hope to see you next time. Bye bye.
