Buckle up, besties. We are back in our Bibles. I am so happy that you are here. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, whatever time it is that you are listening to this podcast. My dog is staring into my soul. Is he going to behave this episode? Who knows? If you've been here a while, then you know the answer is probably not. Currently dragging his crusty bone across our brand new couch. Okay, fabulous. Per usual, I am recording this while Danny is gone. So it's just me and the pup. Um, for those of you that are new, I have a one-year-old. You're almost one. You're actually almost one. He's one on August 24th, you guys. So he's almost a year old. We need to have a birthday party for him. Anyway, um, one-year-old golden retriever. He just got back from summer camp, aka doggy discipline camp. It was basically a four-week board and train while we were at like our weddingslash honeymoon. And it was sad. Four weeks is a long time, you guys. That was it was hard. But he came back a brand new dog. He's still a little nuts. Um, he needs to be fixed, but we're waiting until he's two, just because of um it was just what our breeder suggested. I guess with golden retrievers, they're just really prone to hip dysplasia, and I don't know. I don't really want to talk about that, but basically we're waiting until he's two to get fixed. So we have a whole nother yeah of this, but we love him. I feel like I don't want to change him. I mean, is he annoying? Yeah, but he's our annoying little pup. Okay, let's get into it. You guys, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I know I'm two days late on the pod. I promise you guys, I promise this from the beginning, y'all. I'm gonna be late. One thing about me, I'm gonna be late. I promise you it's something that I'm working on. I know I said that back in season one too. Like, it really is something that I'm working on. Like, people in my personal life, they know I'm always late. And it's not cute. Like, it's not cool, it's not fair, it's not fun. It's actually really annoying to be like someone that's always late, and it is something I'm trying to work on. But in my defense, it's not that I forgot about y'all. Okay, I would never do that. I would never ever forget about you. Um, I woke up Friday feeling super under the weather, and it was so gloomy here in Ohio. I was just like, uh. Danny woke me up and I'm like, bro, it's like eight o'clock. Okay, so on Fridays, Mondays and Fridays, I work from home, you guys. That's why Fridays is my podcast day. Because I'm like, okay, just in case I don't get to it during the week, I could always get up early Friday, record, post, all the things. So I have to get on a meeting at nine o'clock. So he woke me up at eight and I'm like, oh, oh, we are, yeah, we just needed to sleep in, I guess. So I got up, it was gloomy. I'm like, there is no way a podcast is going up before this meeting. So, you know, then I went on through my day. Obviously, I have to work through the day, can't record a podcast in the middle of the workday. And then evening came around. I started working on my pillow covers. If you guys are following my series on TikTok, I need to post that on Instagram. Guys, I need to get so much better at cross-posting. I'm so bad at it. Why? Like, literally, why? It's literally one extra step, and for some reason it just feels like impossible to do. I need to get better at posting on Instagram as well. But I got new pillow covers for our new couch, you guys, and it just looks so much better. It's so much cozier. I'm going for a very like Nancy Myers type vibe, like a cozy cottage. Like I love a cottage, like a like an East Coast cottage, but we're coming towards the fall. So I'm like, okay, we also need to be like a little like the pillow covers I got, I fear they're very springy, but I'm not really worried about that because I love a bright color. Like I need the bright colors throughout the winter so that I don't go crazy. Okay. Seasonal depression, baddie over here. So I'm loving it. I'm gonna keep the greens and the blues. And then, you know, I have a lot of neutrals as well. So we're nevertheless, if you're following along with this series, I'm calling it Steward Her Home because I'm really learning to like try to just like steward what God has given me, right? And not complain about what I don't have. And I I didn't really like love my house. Like I was really just like sick of hating my house. I live in like a mid-century ranch, and you know, it's just like obviously not my dream home, but it's not our forever home. So I don't have to love it. What I can do is just work with what I have and you know, get things that will make it feel more like a home and make it feel more cozy and inviting in the way that I want it to feel, and that's okay. And also, it doesn't have to happen all at once, okay? I don't need to go just like go spend a thousand dollars on stuff. No, no. I'm trying to learn to let things slowly trickle in. Okay, like if you've been following the series, the first thing was our couch. Then I took down the blinds. I did order curtains, just haven't found the time to put them up. Curtains will be going up soon. I have sconces behind our couch that will be going up soon. I got a sofa table that's our new entry table with some little ottomans because I feel like we needed some extra seating, but our living room is sort of we really only have room for the couch. So, like, I got little ottomans for people to sit on that go under the sofa table. I need to decorate the wall above that. I really want to get rid of our TV stand. I want something new. We got a new um coffee table. We need a rug. So you know what I mean? Like it's just trickling in. Like, even just replacing out the pillow covers is it is a task within itself and money, right? So I'm just learning to appreciate what I have, let things trickle in slowly. I don't need to buy everything at once. I don't need to go full force, pedal to the metal, you know, all gas, no brakes on our home when, you know, there's other things that we need to be like stewarding our money. You know, that's a whole different topic. So, stewarding our home. I'm vlogging and keeping track of that on TikTok and hopefully Instagram once I get caught up over there. If you guys want to follow along. All right. Anyways, we got way off track. The whole story was I got busy Friday night by putting on the pillow covers, and then that took over my evening and I didn't record for you guys. So I'm here. I know I'm late. One thing about me is even though I'm late, I promise I will always show up for y'all. So if by chance you come on on a Friday morning and you're like, where's Dana? Where's Dana? Shocking. She's not here. She will be here. I promise. I will never let you go a full week without a new podcast, even if it's a little late. All right, so today we are going to dive deep into James 4. You guys, we're almost done with the book of James, which makes me sad. I really, really liked James. I really did. Well, it's not over yet. We still have four and five. Okay, so we still have one more episode. And then I kind of want to do like a recap episode because there were so many good things in here. This is James is like good, you guys. I have always been such a sucker for Paul. Paul writes like Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, all those good ones, right? He writes the letters to the churches. And I think he's awesome. I think he has some really, really, really good pieces of advice and wisdom. And I just like the way he writes. I think he's very matter-of-fact. I think he's pretty blunt. And I think sometimes we just need to hear that. But I honestly think James might be taking the cake. Right now, I do think my favorite book I've read so far is Romans. I also obviously love the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Because those are the stories of Jesus. And like I love that. I love hearing stories about Jesus. I love hearing Jesus speak, like in the Bible, hearing about what he said, what he did, the miracles he performed. Um, but I think Romans is still my favorite, and James might be taking the cake, which is crazy. Crazy. So in the last three episodes on the podcast here, we have gone over one, two, and three. Today we are going to be deep diving into four. We have three different, like mini topics within chapter four. Drawing close to God, warning against judging others, and warning about self-confidence. Okay. You're gonna need to take your bone and you're gonna need to go over there where it's soft. Because I can't do this. I can't listen. Can you guys hear him? He he picks his bone up and throws it in the air and it falls on our hardwood floor, our beautiful original hardwood floor that has been refinished. I can't, I can't do it. Anywho. Um, so yeah, we're gonna go into chapter four. I never even welcomed you guys to the podcast. Welcome to Gospel to Go. I'm Dana, your host, and I know I already told you, but I'm so happy you're here. I'm gonna lead you, you know, with prayer here before we get started. If you are somewhere safe that you can bow your head, close your eyes, I invite you to do so. Otherwise, just listen along and you can pray at a different time of the day. Lord God, thank you. Thank you so much for today. Thank you for this morning. Thank you for the sunshine. Thank you for my friend on the other side of this podcast. I invite you to make yourself known in their life. Whatever it is that they're going through, if they're going something through, if they're going through something that is hard or challenging, something that they feel distant from you, that you make yourself known. That you remind them that you are never far from them. You are always with them. And you will always listen to them and be there for them. I pray that through this podcast episode today, Lord, there are so many good things we're gonna go over today in James, specifically chapter four. I pray that something that I say here resonates with my friend on the other side of this podcast listening. I pray that they hear your voice somehow through me. Lord, use me as a vessel. I am not perfect, Lord. I am not perfect. Sometimes my words get jumbled. Sometimes I go off on tangents. We go on side quests a lot on this podcast, Lord, as you know. And I know that everything that comes out of my mouth is something that you want me to say. But give me grace. Give me grace to deliver it with. I ask that whatever I say, you use me as a vessel, Lord, and you help the other, the other friend that I have here. Hopefully, something that I say resonates. I pray over their health, safety, their family and close friends, health and safety. And I pray that they continue to see you in the ordinary, in the everyday life that they live. Lord, thank you so much for this opportunity. We love you in Jesus' name. Amen. All right. Love it. Heavy on I'm not perfect, guys. Oh my Lord. Trying so hard to get better at praying on the spot, and it's just not good. So thank you. Thank you for being here with me. I feel like I always say the same thing, but I do want to pray for you guys. Like, I want to pray for your health, your safety, um, whatever it is that you're going through. It's kind of hard because like I know you guys, like obviously there's tons of y'all listening that are going through different things. So, you know, it'd be kind of nice if maybe, you know, my dog wasn't destroying him, his bone in our floor. Um, so I could kind of focus. I need to do like a lot better at just like putting myself in a quiet place before I pray with y'all. So, anyways, thank you for being here with me through the good and the bad and the and the ugly. Because that's a little bit ugly, but you know what? It's fine. We're gonna get into the good stuff. Stuff that actually only matters. It is the word, the truth. All right, so I am reading per usual out of my NLT version. This is a life application study Bible. You guys know I use this specifically because it does help. It's got footnotes, um, and I'm gonna read you all the all the knits and bits and the good stuff here. And also what I wanna uh say is because I get a lot of questions about my Bible, it is linked down below if you guys want to shop. Dana gets you, I think, 10% off. It's it's pricey, I'm not gonna lie to you. Like it's a pricey Bible, but man, you guys, it is. I mean, for what you get, it's first of all, it's almost like 3,000 pages. How many pages are? Okay, maybe not almost. It's like 2,300 pages, okay? And it has so much goodness in here. It's under $100. Guys, I think that's like honestly a steal. Um, and it's an i I understand like that's not feasible for everybody, but for what you get, like I feel like it's just good, it's a good bang for your buck, and it's worth the investment. Like, if you're gonna invest in anything in your life, like truly I will always say this like anything for your physical, spiritual, mental health, like I think is so important to invest in. And I think that this is a good, this is a good investment for sure. Um, okay. Alrighty. Let's get into it. Chapter four. So I am reading from NLT version. If you're reading along with me, it could be different depending on what version of the Bible you are reading. But I invite you to listen along. Pay attention. We have lots of notes today. So, starting with drawing close to God, what is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don't they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it. So you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong. You want only what gives you pleasure. Before we get into the next paragraph, because the next paragraph's really good, I want to point out, like, touch on this because I did see a really good post on Instagram this morning that said, Stop praying based on who you are. Like it has nothing to do with who you are, the sins you've committed, what you think of yourself. I think a lot of times we like put off asking for certain things because we feel like we don't deserve it. It you're not praying because of who you are. Okay, you're praying because of who he is, who God is. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him and what he can do and his plans for you. So we're gonna stop praying like it's it's all about us, right? Because it's actually all about God. Getting into the second paragraph here, which is so good. I I just underlined, I literally went crazy on the underlining. You adulterers, don't you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again. If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you think the scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate, that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. And he gives grace generously, as the scriptures say. God opposed the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Okay. There is nothing wrong with wanting a pleasurable life. God gives us good gifts that he wants us to enjoy. Okay, but having friendship with the world often involves seeking pleasure at others' expense or at the expense of obeying God. Pleasure that keeps us from pleasing God is sinful. Pleasure from God's rich bounty is good. It only becomes a problem when we start to take the world and the pleasures of this world and the treasures of this world and we place them above God. Why does James say that it is impossible to be a friend of the world and a friend of God at the same time? Because this was something where I was like, I don't know. It's like kind of scary. Like you make yourself an enemy of God. That's a little crazy. Like that's a little scary, scary. Okay. These two paths lead in opposite directions and to very different destinations. So friendship with the world often tends to lead to quarrels and fights, materialism, self-centered living, and death. The other path leads to faith, hope, and love, which is like Bible, right? That's like the core of the Bible. We know that in 1 Corinthians 13 13. Faith, hope, love, the fruit of the spirit, which we love from Galatians, thank you, Paul. And eternal life, John 3.16. We love John 3.16. Okay. So this verse may mean that because of our fallen nature, we have a tendency toward envy and must keep it in check. Or it may mean that God, who puts his spirit in believers, right? The Holy Spirit's living in me and you because we're believers. So I think. I also like I like to be very cautious because there could be someone clicking on here listening that literally is just dabbling. Maybe you're brand new. Okay. Um, if we're believers, God has placed the Holy Spirit within us, and He wants that intimate friendship with us. James is not quoting like a specific verse or passage, he is summing up a general teaching of scripture. And if you guys want to like learn more on the human tendency towards evil and discontents, Romans and Galatians, again, shout out, Paul Mahomie. Um, here's some verses you can check up on Romans 6, 6 through 8, and Galatians 5, 17 through 21. So look those up on your own. Do a little Bible study of yourself. That's just more on like human tendency toward evil and discontent. Because I think, yes, we all live with like a little bit of that. We like have that sinful nature because that's just like that's what happened. That was like the fall, right? Um so yeah, go moving on to like the last the last verse here, and he gives grace generously, as the scriptures say, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Um talking about that, and then also going into the next part. Let me okay, hold on. Let me finish reading this section, and then we'll go back to the footnotes. So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. I say that to myself probably four times a day. I'm not kidding. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you've done, let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. Okay, so a couple things to go over. We're gonna finish reading this footnote here, but also like I want you guys to listen to this. Like, God is not saying, like, be sad. Be sad for what you've done. That's not what he's saying. So we're gonna get into that. What can help us combat our selfish tendencies? Learning humility. Um, pride makes us wait, what what can oh, what can help us combat our selfish tendencies? Learning humility, okay? Being humble, practicing that. Pride makes us self-centered and leads us to conclude that we deserve all that we can see, touch, or imagine. It creates greedy appetites far for far more than we need. We can be released from our self-centered desires by humbling ourselves before God, realizing that all we really need is his approval. God not only gives us good gifts, but also gives us good desires. When the Holy Spirit fills us, we see this world's seductive attractions for what they actually are, which is only cheap substitutes for what God has to offer. I'm gonna read that again. Once you're filled with the Holy Spirit, friends, okay, you will start to see the world a whole new way. You're gonna see these like seductive attractions, these things, these shiny things that attract us in the world, whether it's a brand new couch, a bigger home, more money, a promotion, you know, a boyfriend, a girl, whatever it is. Like they're only cheap substitutes for what God truly has to offer. You don't need the next best thing. Okay. Um so how can you come close to God? James literally gives us five ways right here: humble yourself before him, yield to his authority, commit your life to him and his control, and be willing to follow him. Resist the devil. Don't allow Satan to entice and tempt you. Wash your hands and purify your hearts, be cleansed from sin, replacing the desire to sin with the desire to experience God's purity. Let there be tears for what you have done. So don't be afraid to express deep, heartfelt sorrow for what you've done. Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in honor. Okay, recognize that your worth comes from God and God alone. To be humble involves leaning on his power and guidance and not going your own independent way. Although we do not deserve God's favor, he wants to lift us up and give us worth and dignity despite our human shortcomings. Okay, draw near to God. There's another verse you can read, Hebrews. Whoa, excuse me, Hebrews 10, 19 through 22. Okay, we'll talk more about drawing near to God. Going into the second paragraph here, warning against judging others. This is also a good one, but who am I kidding? They're all so good. Warning against judging others. Don't speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the judge. He alone has the power to save or destroy. So, what right do you have to judge your neighbor? Hmm. Jesus summarized the law as loving God and your neighbor. We talked a little bit about this in James 1. Okay, if you guys remember. And Paul said, homie Paul, he said that love demonstrated toward a neighbor would satisfy fully God's love. When we fail to love each other's and instead we constantly judge them, we are actually breaking God's law. Examine your attitudes and actions towards others. Do you build people up or do you tear them down? When you're ready to criticize someone, remember God's law of love and say something positive or encouraging instead. Even if you have to speak a difficult truth, you can do so in a constructive and respectful manner. Saying something beneficial to others will cure you of finding fault and increase your ability to obey God's. Law of love. That is something that I have tried to work on lately. Anytime I want to judge or say something negative about someone, I try to stop and think of at least one to two positive things that can combat that because I'm working really hard on not speaking poorly of others, judging others, talking, gossiping. Into our last paragraph here, warning about self-confidence. Look here, you who say today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and we'll stay there a year. We will do business there and we'll make a profit. How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog. It is here a little while, then it's gone. Oof. Ouch. Thanks, James. What you ought to say is if the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that. Otherwise, you're boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. So it is good to have goals, okay, but our goals can disappoint us. If we leave God out of them, chances are they're definitely gonna disappoint us. Why would we make plans as though God doesn't exist when he holds the future in his hands? Okay, seizing opportunities or being assertive without considering what God wants will lead to frustration. 100%. Good planning starts by asking these questions. What would I like to be doing 10 years from now, one year from now, tomorrow? How will I act? This is like a really good question to ask yourself and to journal on, reflect on. How would I react if God steps in and rearranges my plans? We should plan ahead. Like obviously, that is the respect, like the responsible thing to do. Okay. But we gotta hold on to them loosely. Okay, you can make the plans, make all the plans you want, but you can't act like that's like end goal, okay? Because things are gonna change. Right? You know that saying that's like if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. If we put God's desires at the center of our planning, he won't disappoint us. So again, it's okay to have goals and plans. You can tell God, hey, in one year I'm gonna get engaged. Within the next year, I'm gonna find the love of my life, I'm gonna get engaged, I'm gonna finally be able to be married, start my family, everything I've ever wanted. But when you take God out of it, that's when you start to become disappointed. Instead, put God at the center of that plan. Okay, say, God, my hope, my prayer, my plan would be to be, you know, find the love of my life in the next year. I pray, God, that you will bring me the love of my life, the person you put on this earth for me and me for them. And I trust you. You know, putting your plans into God's hands is truly how you get what you want. And I believe that wholeheartedly. Additionally, when we got smacked in the face, it was literally a jump scare. Life is no short. Wait, what? Life is short no matter how long we live. Okay, remember that verse where I was like, okay, out. Your life is like the morning fog. It's here a little while, then it's gone. So life is short no matter how long we live. And no one knows the length of their lives, right? So don't be deceived into thinking that you have lots of remaining time to live for Christ, to enjoy your loved ones, or to do what you know that you should do. You have to start living for God today. You have to, guys, put away the desires of the world and start focusing on your Lord and Savior. Then, no matter when your life ends, you will have fulfilled God's plan for you. I feel like so many times, like so often, I forget. Like, I'm like, I still have so much life to live. Like, I still have to have babies and like raise them and celebrate my first anniversary and buy the house that I really want to do, and yada yada yada. Okay, but like, and I because I think that that's God's plan for me, right? Like we were just talking about that. Like, those are my plans. And that's what I feel like truly I was I'm here to do. But truly, you're not going to miss out on what God has for you. Like, because you know, I I talk a lot about like my anxiety and my fear of death. Um, and we won't get into that in this episode, but I find myself like thinking that so often where I'm just like, this, like, what if I'm not done? Like, what if I don't fulfill like God's will, God's plan for me? It says right here if you're living for God today, right? You're doing what you know that you should, you're living for Christ, you're enjoying your loved ones, you're you're treating people with kindness, you will have fulfilled God's plan for you. So don't be afraid of that. Okay. We tend to think of sin as what's doing wrong. So at the very end, it says, remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. That feels a little bit random at the end. Yeah? Kind of. Like I was like, okay, well, we just talked about like our plans. Like we were talking about, you know, making our own plans, morning fog, we're not here a long time, yada yada, yada. We don't boast about our pretentious plans, you know, this is evil. And then all of a sudden it's just like, remember it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. And you're like, okay. So here's what it says we tend to think of sin as what is wrong, like doing what is wrong, okay? But James tells us that sin is also failing to do what is right. So it is a sin to lie, right? We know that. But it is also a sin, it can also be a sin to know the truth and not tell it. It is a sin to speak evil of someone, but it is also a sin to avoid that person when you know he or she needs your friendship. You should be willing to help as the Holy Spirit guides you. So when you're in a position like that, like I was reading this and I'm like, okay, so it's a sin to lie, but also what if I'm like trying to protect someone? You know, it can also be a sin to know the truth and not tell it. You know, those are hard situations to be in, and I'm sure we've all been in situations similar to that, where you're just like, I don't know. Like, what is the right way? You should be willing to help as the Holy Spirit guides you. Ask the Holy Spirit, remember, because Jesus died for us, the Holy Spirit lives in each and every one of us believers. Use that to your advantage. Pray. Say, Holy Spirit, come help guide me, help me make this decision. If God has prompted you to do a kind act, to render a service, or to restore a relationship, do it. You will experience a renewed and refreshed vitality in your Christian faith. Amen. Y'all, what a morning in our Bibles. I love James. I'm literally loving James. I hope you guys are too. Um, I'm really excited. Like I said, I'm kind of excited, but also sad to get into five because then we're done. Um, and I don't know what we want to do next. Will you guys let me know? Like, if there's a book, a specific book you want me to go over, because I did tell you in this season we're gonna focus a lot more on just like reading the Bible. Very rarely will I have episodes where I'm just like spewing whatever. Um, I'm gonna be trying to read at least a chapter in every single um you know episode I do because I think that benefits us all a lot. So let me know where I should go next. Or I could pray on it. I should do that too. But it would help to have your guys' suggestions as well. If you guys want to comment, DM me, comment on my TikTok, whatever. Um, but yeah, that's it for today. That's it for today, you guys. I love you. I love you so much, but guess what? Jesus loves you more. Thank you for joining me. Thank you for tuning in, especially because it's late. It's a little later than normal, so I appreciate y'all being here. Um, I will see you next week, but barely a week now, because it's Sunday, so now we have less than a week. I'll see you in less than a week next Friday for James 5. We're gonna wrap it up here um in James, and I can't wait. I will see you then. I love you so much. Spread the word. Guys, go spread the word. Spread the good news. Jesus is still alive and he's working in me and you today. Hello. Go spread the word. Whether that's writing a Bible verse somewhere and leaving it in in a bathroom or telling a friend about this podcast or sharing a TikTok that really made you feel good or just taught you about Jesus. Okay, whatever it might be. Pray for someone, reach out to someone, ask them how they're doing, tell them Jesus loves them. I will see you guys next week. Thanks for tuning in.
