Good evening, sports biz family, and welcome to episode number 44. If you're a bingo player, that means droopy drawers, apparently, Martin. Does it really? 44 droopy drawers, yes, on my bingo. Well, yes. Anyway, with more frivolity, fun and pheromones of Mr. Martin Rinell, aka the dog. How are you everybody? And myself, John Briggs, or Briggsy, as some of you prefer to call me, the only podcast you'll ever need in your life because we hit all the open cracks. Because, Martin, sport is life. And life is sport. What's happening?
SPEAKER_01Martin. It is, isn't it? Well, we're gu we're gonna go through a bit of Australian stuff. Yeah. To uh to kick this one off. Yep. We do have to touch on the state of origin. Uh as a New South Wales fan, I won't need 30 seconds. Okay. That'll about cover it. Well, before that, do we need to toast? No. Why not? No, because we lost. No, in general, too. Oh, in general.
SPEAKER_00Just because we're here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well look, we've also got NRL, AFL, Super Rugby Finals. The Netball finals are kicked off. Yep. Aussies are around the world, Aussies are playing Netball, we're playing uh we're going athletics, we're back to the cricket. Yeah. So we've got a lot going on. So what do we need to toast first off then, John? Well, why don't we toast a 2020 win for Australia? Because it's just so important. A. Oh, cheers. Jeez, what is? What do we got? We've got uh Noosa. Heads of Noosa Lager, Japanese lager. Japanese from Noosa. Up on the Sunshine Coast. How can it be Japanese? Well, because it's the recipe. That's how. It's not itself. Alright. It's the it's the inspiration of the Japanese. Guess what? I've got a joke. Alright, I'm ready. Okay. Husband and wife, married for 40 years, in bed.
SPEAKER_00Okay? And the husband has this terrible, terrible like like many of us, Martin, habit and lifelong problem of farting in the bed.
SPEAKER_01Loudly, absolutely cannon blasters. Oh. I know. Oh, it's disrespectful. Well, isn't it, Just?
SPEAKER_00Can't do that. Anyway, after 40 years, these missus has had enough. They live on a chicken farm as well, by the way. Oh, that seems a detail. Yes.
SPEAKER_01That seems an important detail. So there's a chicken farm farter. Okay.
SPEAKER_00In effect, yes. Yes. So anyway, she says to him one morning, after one particularly bad episode, do you know, darling, one day you will blast your inners out of your backside. Ah, yes. Yeah, and he goes, very well. If you think that, darling, if you think that. A few days later, she's out in the out in the yard and catches a chicken and wrings its neck and and and gets its gizzards out. Right. Her husband's lying naked in bed and she places them across his neck. Naked bottom. Of course. You know, all nice intestines and blood and thing of the scots. Thing of the scots. Exactly. Anyway, he wakes up and he's horrified because he realizes his wife is right.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, he's. Anyway, but she's one of the shops, deliberately so. It's the ultimate sharp. Yeah, she comes back.
SPEAKER_00She comes back a couple of hours later with a little grin on her face. Yes. How are you doing? She goes, and he goes, Well, you were right. And she goes, Oh really? So what have you done about it? He goes, Well, with a little bit of vacilline in a couple of fingers, I think you got it all back in.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I was thinking that's where that was going. Anyway, so we're moving on more. We've got a few more quick bites. So have we got um anything that caught your eye, John? Well. Anything that entertaining that caught your eye in the world of everything. Yeah, a few bits and pieces. Yes. So, well, we had a brilliant origin, of course. Well, we had a good first 25 minutes.
SPEAKER_00Actually. I don't know what happened after that. Do you remember last week I said that New South Wales would score 24? Yes, you did. And Queensland would score 28. Yes. Well, I was spot on with one of them with the 24. I don't care about the rest. We had Munster was superb.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he he he did alright. He was excellent. He was uh very creative. Yeah, he was uh he was all over the place. Yep. The old Cameron had a great game. Selborn Cobo out on the wing was extraordinary. Yeah. Um and I hated 45 to 50 minutes of that game. It was total shite. Did not enjoy it at all. But I persevered with uh with beer and Rick McKee. Very good. And we got through it at the Burley Heads Hotel. Cheers, Rick. Yes, cheers, Rick. Thanks, mate. One more to go. Still, you've got to remember, one more to go. Well, beer. Could just be, it could just be a great comeback win on Suncorp. Yeah, indeed. And I tell you what, we've done it once in history, I think. Yeah, maybe. Not sure. Yeah, do you know what the injury factors are, or you know who's playing who's not too early? Yeah, okay. Yeah, too early to tell at this point. So they got another couple of games, or at least one at least one more game of NRL. Yes. So half of them, half the New South Wales will get injured. I do have some quick bites, but involved with the quick bites, Martin, is the clickeress. Okay. Clicking. So did we find it? No. I've always had trouble finding it. That's not the way to find it. Yeah, I know. But anyway. So, Martin. Ashley Klein. Tell me about Ashley Klein. Yes, thank you. Is that what that is? Well Martin. It took me a little while to work out why you're stroking a frog. Well, it was pretending it was a clickeress. A mouse. Oh, I don't think the frog was nicer. I don't like what you're doing there. That makes me fundamentally uncomfortable, John.
SPEAKER_00It is a clickeress.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, Ashley, Ashley honest as the day is long. Yeah. And his little issues with a bit of gambling. Oh, oh, well. Well, come on, elaborate. Well, he he was a fond of a of a dabble. Yes. It appears. What's his favourite? Greyhounds, horses? Do you know? I don't actually know. Don't believe they've actually released what it was. Okay. Roulette? Uh maybe poker? Yeah. Yeah, whoever the ho. We will find. Uh hopefully it's not betting on rugby league.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and that's where I.
SPEAKER_01Because if he's heading that way, he's in trouble. Or but this is this is uh this is not a new thing. This is a historical problem. Yeah. Yes and no. So I'm not sure it's still an ongoing problem that he's still doing it. That was not my understanding of this situation. But he's not a popular F anyway, is he? He's I think across the top two states, New South Wales and Queensland, in this great land that we live in, he might be the most disliked dude across those two states right now. I think he might be. Did he rectify the second game to a degree?
SPEAKER_00A couple of decisions going the other way.
SPEAKER_01I I don't remember anything particularly controversial for him to even have to make a decision on. Very unlike you, Martin. You know, shout at the referee on the TV. Yeah, but here's the problem. Here's the problem with that game. You couldn't shout at the referee, because he didn't have to make any decisions, because Queensland didn't really seem to make any bloody mistakes. Ah, they were brilliant. So for 50 minutes, I don't even remember Queensland making a mistake. Absolutely so. Good God. So Ashley Klein just basically went, fifth tackle, yeah. That's it. That's about all he had to say. Yeah, no, I know. I don't remember there being a six again against Queensland. I don't remember them dropping the ball. I don't remember them knocking on. Yeah, no, it's just didn't happen. I know.
SPEAKER_00But what I liked best about it was the creativity. Even if it was New South Wales and they did it, I would have appreciated it just the same. Yep. The in instead of just the one diagonal kick on the overhead.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Munster was he was showing off a bit. He wasn't. Sam Walker in his second origin was just unbelievable. Didn't miss a kick, but so a great kicking game. So good as a 5'8 running up to the line. Sorry, half back running up to the line. Is he pretty young? Oh yeah, Sam Walker. He's only started his career. Yeah, but I thought 2020s, yeah. 2021, maybe? I thought so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, just a kick. Excellent. Well, let's move on from the seat of origin. Let's just have a quick look at the AFL, please, because it would be lovely. The pies did win. Yes. The pies did. Who did the pies beat? Mate, that don't care who they beat. They won. Oh, that matters. I care who they beat.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't really make any difference. They beat Port Adelaide. And I believe they've got the Suns next. Cheers! Cheers to that! And I believe we've got the Suns next week. Next week.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they do. I can't wait. It's gonna be very exciting. Well, just as a heads up to everybody, we, at that game, I'm gonna come along too. Okay. And we're gonna do Sports Biz's first ever live sport roaming mic. Absolutely. Yes. We're gonna wander around the ground and have a bit of a chat to the Suns players. Suns fans. Suns supporters. Yep. Don't know about the Collingwood one though. Of course we are. We're gonna have to. Oh, I could I we could I'm taking some spare. I've got some friends with primary school kids. They could converse with them. I'm taking some spare dentures. Some false teeth. Hopefully. Put the teeth in. Drew! I'm sorry, mate, but we'll find you there. So you better be eloquent. Okay. All right. Okay. What else do I know about? What else in the AFL? Crows Crows got up. Fremantle one as well. Yep, Fremantle, my lord. They're playing very well. Good God, that's 13 in a row. And the worst part is the only game they've lost was in round one. Yeah. So they are just firing. So the top two teams are not from Victoria. That's right. From Antle, Sydney. Yep. Yep. Then Hawthorne. Yeah. Then Geelong. Yeah. Which for a long time Geelong was not a Melbourne team because it was out, but now they're considered Victorian.
SPEAKER_00So what they weren't considered a Melbourne team.
SPEAKER_01No, not in the VFL. They were that country outside team that no one liked. Yeah, that's right. Scott Lyons is a Geelong fan. No. I'm sure he was. No way. Scott Lyons is dogs. He is Westgate. I might be West. Now I remember now. Through and through. Remember, and I'll send this episode to you, Scott, for this line in particular. He's the one who said to me, just remember, Martin, you support them because you love them, not because they win. Yeah, well, this is true. The Bastards went and won in 2016. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so uh AFL, very standard, I think. Um, pretty standard. There are nothing much has changed up top. Yeah. Uh yeah, still Fremantle, Sydney, Hawthorne, Geelong, Adelaide. Melbourne are still hanging around. Just North Melbourne are still floating in there. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are hanging in. So, yeah, pretty much what you expected at this point.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So I did forget something about the rugby league. Not the state of origin, but it is a it's one of our new sections of what went wrong now.
SPEAKER_01Get the foot out of here. Oh, get the foot out of here. Yes, we're getting the foot out of here. I tell you, we are going all out with the expenses.
SPEAKER_00Titans beat Penrith.
SPEAKER_01Oh, now. I take it with the NRL. Can you believe it? What on earth was going on there? Yeah, so let's think that through. Uh one point against Penrith. I thought you're going to make a point. Oh, I think Titans. Titans made the point. It was made with uh just ridiculous. Uh a tipsters nightmare. Oh god, yes. Ruined the betting for so many people. In your opinion, Martin, was it because Penrith were missing some players from the original? Oh, undoubtedly. Yeah, yeah, Penrith had a bunch of state origin players not played. Well, they look real flat anyway. But the last time they did this, they played the Warriors who were second and beat them. Okay. Without those players. Yeah. So now they've come up against the Titans, who, to be fair, are okay. Oh, they're crap. Well, they're better than the crap. Well, they're only slightly better than St. George. Uh, but apparently they're better than the Broncos. So that's good. Uh yeah, full marks Titans. Go, go, go. Yeah. But maybe a similar thing. We all know Tino had the loss of his father. Right. That inspired Queensland. He plays for the Gold Coast. So maybe. Maybe some of that's spilt over. I don't know. Okay. Well, anyway. Bulldogs pulled out of one point against Manley. So similar. Just as ridiculous. Yes. Yeah. So where are Manley? Do you know where they are? About about halfway. Oh, yeah, they're sixth. So still got Penrith and New Zealand on top. One and two. Dolphins. Dolphins. Queensland Dolphins. The Redcliffe boys. They're now third. Wow. Out of nowhere. Well. Roosters or Newcastle, fifth. Manly sixth. Yeah. And Cornella? Eighth. Yeah, they're going alright. They'll win. Against the Roosters? Yeah. St. George? Well. Think of St. George as Atlas. Charles Atlas. No, the God. Right. Holding up the world of rugby league. Indeed. That is what St. George is doing right now. They are holding up the globe of all things rugby league. You're the strongest team in the division. They are the foundation of the competition. Mate, you've got the habit of this. West Ham was sort of similar. Not quite as bad. That's brutal, mate. In the Premier.
SPEAKER_00You need to have a bit of a look at who you're supporting champ.
SPEAKER_01Hey. Anyway. The immortal words of Skull Lyons. You support 'em because you love 'em.
SPEAKER_00This is true. Mate, we've got a uh I thought we'd just quickly before you go on to a rant.
SPEAKER_01We've got Oh, yes. Before you ran into a rant, I said. Oh, damn. I was I was ready to go. Yes. What do you got there? We've got a crack, a fat, a tube. Is that half a kilo? Probably is. So that's smaller. It could be, couldn't be. Yeah, it might be a quarter. Yeah, it may be.
SPEAKER_00So what is it with Australian tennis players, Martin?
unknownGo on.
SPEAKER_01The wonderful. Oh okay. Well, first of all, is he still considered an Australian tennis player? I know he's still Australian. Yeah. Is he still considered a tennis player with the movies? He's actually trying he's going for a qualifying for Wimbledon. Oh, yeah, cool. So he's actually trying to get in. He's playing. But he's playing against your mate. Yeah. What was his name now? Oh, the one that Jordan Thompson. No. No?
SPEAKER_00The one that did really well in the he won a match in the French. Oh, that's pretty good. And you were raving about him.
SPEAKER_01Oh, not uh Tanasi. No. No. No, he's coming later in this little conversation. Tanasi fall apart is. Well, yeah. Um the new You can't the Australian that won one match. Yes. And it's not Dim and all, because he won more than one. He's obviously forgettable. We'll call him forgettable. We'll call him obviously forgettable.
SPEAKER_00But anyway, so he's playing Kyrgios in a qualifier. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But anyway, today's um cracker fatty tuners, Nick Kyrgios. Yeah. Having a go at one of the greatest players of all time, certainly the best backhand of all time. Bernard Tommy. No. Huh. Stan Warinka. Oh. Does he qualify as that? What a beautiful backhand. Great backhand. He has won a couple of slams. So he had a shot? Ah, mate. One shot. He had a girlfriend. Probably. And your mate, you mentioned his name earlier, Cock Anarchis. Yes. Got in there.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00And Kyrios the Fool comes out with the immortal lines of. Oh, that was a while ago. So no, all these things are. I hear Cock Anarchis banging your girlfriend. That's right. Sorry about that, mate.
SPEAKER_01I remember that. Stan. I know. That is. That's a brutal assessment of the situation. I'm assuming she wasn't his girlfriend at the time. Well, obviously not. I think it finished. Technically, that's not right then. Well he finished too. So maybe. But anyway. So is that is that the is that the fatitude? Yes. Bad attitude in sport. Well, just a simple sledge. Well, it is. It's such a unbelievable. I thought it's hilarious when the West Indies do it to Glenn McGrath, but not funny when Kyrios does it to stand in the end.
SPEAKER_00You know exactly what Glenn McGrath said to Salvan.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Would you like me to enlighten you? No, no, no. And his response was pure magic. That's for another day. Indeed, McGrath started it. Of course. As he always does. Of course. But then when he brings his wife into it, which is very sad, but don't do it. That's right. Don't run down that line. That's very simple. Salty. Yes. Little bit. I've didn't know what that was. You've got to be ranked. I've got a rant. I am going to go. It is going to be a little bit AFL-ish. Yep. But there were some things that happened this week in the AFL. Right. There's a couple of things. Yeah. We we only had seven games, not nine, because there's some buys. Yeah. And somehow they still had god-awful umpiring. Right. Of which we now believe credibility, the single worst umpiring decision ever seen. Of course, Mark. And we've had some shockers. But this, and this didn't even include my team. Right. This is just an impartial rant of an umpire that was two meters away from a contest. Ball was kicked into the center. This is the GWS Carlton game. And for anybody listening to this that watches the AFL, you will already know this situation. Umpire standing there watching the contest. GWS player comes through, big punch to spoil the ball.
SPEAKER_00No, it didn't punch anybody in the face.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, it was a pure, it was a brilliant spoil. Okay. Ball only goes forward, lands into the arms of another GWS player. Yeah. And the umpire blows his whistle and says, Mark. It wasn't kicked to him at all. It was a spoil. But he paid the mark to him. Right. So then everybody stopped. Because that's what you do when it's a mark. Yes. And suddenly the umpire said, not a mark. Oh crap. He spoiled it. So he goes, play on advantage.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You don't play on advantage. There's no advantage. But he let the GWS play on, who went bang, bang, bang with three quick hands and kicked the goal. Yeah, of course it is. Because all the cars from Playthers had stopped. Yeah. Unbelievable. Is he friends of Ashley Klein? Oh. He might have had a little bit of Ashley in him. Well. I don't know. Do they go to the casino together? So now we've got the issues with this concept that there's only a total of 40 umpires available for AFL at the elite level. Right. In the whole country. Are they not getting paid enough? No. None of them are full-time. Right. But if you can't get that decision right, you're not getting any decision right. Yeah. And now we know we had our interview with Ian Bennett about umpiring and how the consistency concept is almost a fallacy. It doesn't happen. Yep. So that that is okay. But then what about consistency? The match review panel handing out suspensions. Right. This is the one where I've lost my brain. Okay. I lost my brain. So about three weeks ago, an Adelaide Crows player did a little bit of a drive-by punch on a Hawthorne player, punched him in the ribs on the way through, got a one-week suspension. I thought it was a bit harsh because he barely touched him, and the guy fell over, realized he wasn't getting a free kick, jumped back up and kept playing. But they were hard. We are stamping out this behavior. It's terrible. It must be a suspension. Martin, tell him. Right. Hope they're listening to this. This weekend, just gone. We've got another one. Toby Green. Run two. Punches a Carlton player in the stomach on the way through. Yeah. No suspension. Uh huh. Just a $1,300 fine. Okay. No problems at all. Yeah. Don't need to rub that behavior out. Apparently. No consistency. Then you've got Hawthorne versus the Gold Coast. Little little Ginovan sitting on top of a Gold Coast player who's lying on his back on the ground, grabs him by the jumper, punches him in the face. Nice. No suspension. Just a little $1,300 fine again. So apparently, you can punch. You can even punch in the head if you play for the right teams, and it's not a problem. So is that better than this? Oh yes. No, these were proper. Yeah, these were legitimate hits. But apparently they're not trying to stamp that out anymore. You can't be inconsistent with a match review panel. You're watching videos. Maybe they're just trying to toughen the game up a little bit. Ah, just get the things right. Honestly. Does my head in sport universe? It's one thing for umpires not to be consistent. But when the judiciary isn't consistent watching videos, you do tend to lose your brain. Well, true. Yes. This is true. There's no cheers for that. It's just commiserations. Well, can I cheer as a great Aussie legend in the sport, Martin?
SPEAKER_00I would. I think you can. Well I was after. It's gone. It's in front of you. Doesn't matter. You can't cheese without a beer. Yeah, exactly. Kirana Ching. Lost my balls.
SPEAKER_01Anyway. Well, just to do it. You found the clicker. Well, it is great Aussie legends of sport. I think I'll call you for that.
SPEAKER_00Even though I am English, I do appreciate a great sport. Aussies in sports. Or from anywhere in the world, but because this is an Aussie podcast, growing up as a kid, I'm a huge cricket fan, playing cricket all the time, non-stop, opening bowler myself, although not fast, just opening bowler.
SPEAKER_01For uh for Benogan? No, well, I was a little kid. Oh, that's a that's a village actually smaller than Bonogan. It is, it is.
SPEAKER_00So, anyway, watching the TV was all the coaching we ever had. We didn't have coaches. What was that, you know? It never happened in our clubs. Right. Even at school, we knew more than the school teachers did about cricket. Anyway, it's true. So our coaching was watching really good players. Okay. And listening to commentators.
SPEAKER_01And who did you listen to and watch?
SPEAKER_00Well, it was Richie Beno, even in England it was. Jim Laker of 19 Wickets and one match against Autready of Fame. Yes. A couple of the guys here and there, but they were the main two.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, they would describe and wax lyrical, and quite rightly so. One of my favourite terms. Two beautiful fast bowling actions. Yes. One was Michael Holding, who was known as Hall's voice of critic. He was Silk.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Whispering Death. But the other one was Dennis Lilly.
SPEAKER_01And this is who we're focusing on pre pre-back. Dennis Keith Lilly. Well, pre pre he broke his back.
SPEAKER_00Yes. He was bowling at probably 160, they reckon. Yep. Now obviously we can't prove that, but he was absolutely express. But it wasn't his speed. It was what he could do with the ball. It was a swing either way, cut either way. Yes. The disguise, the slower ball, you name it, the perfect bouncer, because he had a perfect action.
SPEAKER_01It was economical.
SPEAKER_00Well it was better. It was better than that. It was athletic. I mean, the long black hair, the shirt undone halfway down the belly button, big hairy chest, and a medallion bouncing up.
SPEAKER_01And the uh the aggression at the at the at the uh at the bowlers. And the best appeal. Yeah. To the um parts. That's right. How's that? And then he's it was just the probably the first real brilliant appealer. And he was like, is that where he rates? I like that. I would say so. Yeah, okay. The most passionate. Oh mate.
SPEAKER_00But he was perfect. His action was absolutely spot on. He got so close to the stumps, 355 test wickets, world record for a long time. Yep. Um, but but as you mentioned, he broke his head massive stress fractures in his back. Way before experts knew how to fix it. I mean, we know Pat Cummings has had it. Yes, but uh very different. Yes, exactly. I mean, Lilly was that for two years, I think, something like that, and literally fixed it himself. Quite amazing how he fixed it all by himself with weight training and God knows how many chin-ups and all the rest of it. Yep. Building up the muscle around that problem area.
SPEAKER_01But Dennis Lilly, great, great Australian legend in sport, the the headband. The headband. And that was Latterly. He was he was one of the first, as you said, with the appealing. Where I think before Dennis Lilly, everyone would turn around and kind of ask the umpire if that was out. Yes. Whereas Dennis Lilly would turn around and try and tell the umpire that was out. But he had this also, he the sweat. It was like this, it was like a moonscreen wipe. Yep. Wipe that on the ball. Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_00No, you're allowed to then. You're not allowed to anymore. So it's only recently where you're not allowed to do that. There you go. Yeah. So it's only about a couple of years. But uh Dickie Bird, probably the greatest umpire ever, rates Dennis Oly as the greatest fast bowler. Well, that's yeah. I know. And it doesn't come much better than that because he saw a lot of great fast bowlers, people like Fred Truman, Lindwolf from Australia as well, played with these guys as well. Dickie Bird was a professional cricketer, played for Yorkshire.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. Back in those days when everyone used to go over and play. And Yorkshire were like a test match team in those days. Yeah. So anyway, Martin, let's roll on. What else we got? We got some sh some small stuff just to run over. So uh we we would be remiss, even though this week, when we go through our international sports, we will dive, dive into the uh World Cup. Yeah. We do need to mention that Australia had its second game. Um now there was some issues with the result. The semi controversial second goal awarded to the US. So US won 2-0. Uh they did play better. For sure. Better. Australia were crap. Yes. Let's face it. There is still a 50-50 conjecture of whether the offside USA player influenced their second goal or not. You sound like a winger here, mate. No, no, no. I'm just saying, I've read that there is still conjecture about that. Okay. Uh, I don't know. I don't know the ins and outs of that. But here's what I do know. Right. Here's what I do know. I thought in our first game, we played pretty well against Turkey. It did. Yeah, yes. Now we had, if you cast your mind back, a couple of goal scorers. Do you remember their names?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um, it was and Metcalf.
SPEAKER_01Nine of them were both substituted, were they? Irokunda didn't play at all. Didn't play at all. How still didn't even get a not a even a name on a on a team sheet. How not? And Metcalf came off the bench with about 10 minutes to go. Yeah, dumb. Absolutely stupid. So I've got to say, and what I've heard since this game, we lost it at selection. Yeah. How can you have two guys that score goals in the World Cup and then think now we're playing the best team in the group? Yeah, we'll be able to do that.
SPEAKER_00I I have a theory, but but I'll say for a start, you've got to go out and try your you've got to go and just try to win. You've got to be aggressive, you've got to be attacking, you've got to have the positive attitude, not go in and just sit back and invite them to score goals against you. And you can't even score on the counter because the two guys who scored on the counter against Turkey weren't playing.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00I mean, really, it doesn't get any more stupid than that. Was he playing for a loss? Well sort of delivered in a way to save them the two other players that scored.
unknownDon't know.
SPEAKER_01Don't know. Give them a rest and then play a better game against Paraguay. Yeah. Don't know. But we've got to also remember that there's some changes in the World Cup in the way the groups are adjudicated now. Right? So it is no longer points followed by goal difference. It is because goal difference is no longer relevant. Yeah. So it's your points first, and if you're on equal points, it goes back to when you were head to head, did you beat the team that's on equal points with you? Yeah. And if you did, then it doesn't matter that you're on equal points and you go through. They've put themselves under a lot of pressure, unnecessarily so.
SPEAKER_00See, if you go out on your shield, then at least you can say we played attacking and positive.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. If you're gonna lose, lose in the right way. Lose trying to win. Yes. Don't lose trying to draw.
SPEAKER_00No, no, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because now they've got to change the whole the way they play in an absolute huge match. Well, actually, they all they got to do is play like they did against Turkey against Paraguay. Absolutely. Well. And Paraguay, with their best player not playing. Yeah. Because he's a silly little put my hand over my mouth and yell at someone, boy, after being told, if you put your hand over your mouth and yell at someone in an argument, you will be red carded. Yeah. So he thought, let's see how that goes. Yeah. And it turns out they weren't lying. Well, he's the first one to be done. And so he should be. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. So what what else? Well, we'll just quickly stay on the on the Australians chart. When is the game? Friday. A couple of days' time. Yeah, Friday, midday. Midday out time you've said that. Yes. Yep. All right, excellent. So Paraguay, so I think we'll be all right there. We'll go 2-0. Yeah. And Paraguay are no good. No, I know that. And when I say that, they're not playing good football. But if they go all out, it's a one-off match. If they win, do they go through? They will, courtesy of that they beat us. Yes. Yes. So when you have the same points, then they will go through because they beat us. Yes, yeah, that's right. Ridiculous. So what this means is you might qualify as a lucky loser. If you if you lose too. Well, yes. Yeah. So what it means is Turkey could now come out and beat the USA 10-nil. Right. And they'd still finish last. Yeah, yeah, it's silly, isn't it? Because they lost to Australia and they lost to Paraguay. Yeah. So they would still finish last and not qualify, even if they beat the US 10-nil. Yep. Yeah. That is dumb. Crazy. Oh. Let's jump in. Two. Oh, good. Australian SuperNet Bull finals. Kicked off on the weekend. Yep. So we had the two qualifying finals. Yep. Number one was Adelaide versus Melbourne. Thunderbirds versus the Vixens. Thunderbirds are go. And uh my lord, did they go? They went berserk. And the score? Absolutely spanked them. 57-ish. Enjoyed that. Don't remember off the top of my 44, about 15, 16 goals. Right. Yeah. So they're straight into the final. And then the Western Fever, which are the Perth team, beat the other Melbourne team, Melbourne Mavericks. A lot closer, only by a handful.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01So now they've got to play. Adelaide get a weekend off, and this coming weekend you'll have Melbourne Vixens versus Western Fever. Right. To make it into the final. Okay. So that's. Where's some of this taking place? Uh well, these were uh Adelaide and Perth. The next game will be in Melbourne for the Melbourne Vixens. I believe for some stupid reason the final is going to be in Melbourne. Okay. Even though Adelaide have been top of the table. First team ever in the net ball to only lose one game in a in a season. Win and go straight through to the grand final and somehow don't play at home. You're doing your Adelaide. Oh man. We've got to win something. We keep making finals at the moment. And then we we jump super rugby. It's done. Yeah. The rugby union season is over. So we know, didn't it? We know it was New Zealand versus New Zealand, of course. So we know it was the uh the Wellington Hurricanes against the Waikato Chiefs. Uh-huh. Teams one and two for the con. Hurricanes. Yeah. Yeah. Played in Wellington. Flushed them.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Have a guess. Oh, mate. Have a guess. Okay, I didn't actually pick up the score, so I'm gonna go I'm gonna go 46-12. What was it? Well cheers to Wellington Hurricanes for a 60 to 5. Oh, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Holy crap! 12 off the first one and second one.
SPEAKER_01You're a try-off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01A converted try-off for the bottom. That's okay. And 60 to 5 in the final. Oh good lord. That's okay. Oh, it's awful.
SPEAKER_00They reach the final. They should call them Adelaide.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, shut up. Unacceptable. Indeed. But now, now, two things to go for me. Go. Aussie cricket. Aussie cricket. Bangladesh. We've done them. You've reached the dizzy height. 3-0. Woo! Whitewash in the T20. Didn't the bison do something? I heard. Yeah, everybody had good sports. Yeah, everybody hit 50s.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Bison had a good one off innings. I think got about 70 something. Yeah, right, yeah. Second game? Yeah. Yeah. Solid effort. So that's uh that's all good. Now we've got some we've got some uh some bigger backyard cricket, yeah, bigger, bigger things here. In fact, we've got one of the biggest. Uh-huh. So I'm gonna jump very quickly because this is of interest to me, to the athletics. Oh, good. So this is a bit of a wrap-up through the Diamond League. We are petering out in the Diamond League because we're getting ready for the com games. Yeah, which is in over four weeks. Sooner than that. Is it is it two weeks? Yeah. It might be, yeah. It might be three weeks. We'll talk about that in uh in in the next one. Yes. But um, yeah, so a lot of Australian athletes are now tapering, so they're not over in the Diamond League competing at F. Yeah. So uh in the last one, we only had one athlete in Doha. Yeah. Yule Reef. Okay. Household name of high jumping, obviously. Yeah. Uh but cracked at 2 metres 30. Yeah, right. So that's not bad, but I'm assuming he's not in the Commonwealth Games team, which is why he's over there performing. Well, you're probably looking at 250, aren't you? 240. Yeah, two mid 240s. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he's not far off, but he was fourth over there. Can I just butt in?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Adam Walton.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Adam Walton. Tennis player who was forgotten. Oh, yes. Yeah, we forgot about him earlier.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Well, he's like your reef, isn't he? Yeah, no. That's right. That's right. The the new champion of Australian tennis.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he's drawn the bizarre Nick Kyrios in the first round of the Mallorca, my Maluca uh graphics. Mallorca, isn't it? Yes. No, not Mallorca, that's a different place.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's what's Mallorca. It's a different place in Spain. Oh, okay. It's a different thing. Oh, lovely. So there's two space. Well, good one, Spain. Yeah, there you go. You can't play soccer properly, and you've got names close to each other. Uh all right, so now we've got some big news. Oh my gosh. First of all, uh the the meet before was in Oslo. Right. Uh Curtis Marshall. Okay. Old Walter Extraordinary. Well, you're going to say meet to the back to back titles against uh Mondo. Ah. Back-to-back titles. So he's taken a uh a second title in the Diamond League, jumping five metres eighty-two. Yep. But he is the big one. Yep. Kai Robinson. Now, a lot of people won't know Kai Robinson. No. He is our number one five kilometer, five five thousand metre on the track athlete. Yeah. He has just gone out in Oslo and finally broken Craig Motram's. I was going to say he has recorded Motram's record. 22 years that stood, and he's rolled through in 1250. Wow.8. That's quick as it is. Yeah, that's quick. But that is super. You're probably aware that Oslo is a very fast truck. It's known for they all go over there to try to break records. So here's the bit that's unbelievable about that. Now that is a fast time on the international stage. Yeah. I believe the world record's about 1235, low 30s. So you're only talking 15 seconds off that. Yeah. He finished eighth in that race, running 1250. Yeah. That's a fast race. Well. That is a super quick race if seven people have gone under 1250. Yeah. It's crazy. Must have been full of Kenyans and Ethiopians. No, it's not bad. Not bad at all. Good luck to him. Yeah. That's running great rolling into the con games. Because he's going to have Kenya and Ethiopia against him then. Oh yeah. Yeah, he's running beautifully.
SPEAKER_00That is the good thing about the Commonwealth games as well. You mean obviously we're missing the USA in and Russia and places like that.
SPEAKER_01But you know, and you've got the African countries. It's nice to have the Caribbean and the African nations. Absolutely, that's right. Can I loop back to a couple of weeks ago? Mate, I I'm I'm feeling you can. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00This is a looping back to tennis, and it's a looping back to a great Aussie legend that I talked about two weeks ago, Yvonne Goolagong. Oh yes. And we were going to do a little bit of research on whether she was actually the first mum to win Wimbledon. Win Wimbledon. Or the only. The only mum to win Wimbledon. That's correct. However, the caveat is that Margaret Court and Kim Kleisters have won the US Open after having a baby.
SPEAKER_01So that it's only been done three times. Yes. But Yvonne's the only one that's done Wimbledon. Yes, that's correct. And Court and Kleisters did US. That's right. I remember Kim Kleisters. Yes, I knew that now. Rather than because we're thinking Lindsay Davenport. Yeah, yeah. But it was the same time. Yes, it was. Same time. But yeah, Kim Kleisters. Well, a shout-out to the Cloysters. Absolutely right. Yeah. But I think we're are we wrapped? I I've I'm done. To use an Aussie expression. Yeah, I'm I'm wrapped. I'm happy with where we've landed. Stoked a. That's poked.
SPEAKER_00It's not stoked. Stoked the fireplace. Oh, okay. And you don't get the mantelpiece. Anyway, that is good night from me. And then it's good night from him. Good night. Good night.
