SPEAKER_06

Good evening, sportsbiz family, and welcome to episode number 49, one short of the half century, with myself, John Briggs, and my cohort Martin Winnell, aka aka the 49, almost to the 50. Absolutely the only podcast you will ever need in your life because we hit all of those open cracks all the time because sport is life and life is sport. What is happening? Martin. John, I don't even know where to start. Yeah. This week, uh it's just brilliant. We got updates for state of origin, soccer World Cup will do the Australian bit. T20 World Cup will do the Australian. Well, there is back over the last week. There's just been more since then. But definitely there's a little bit of Aussie.

SPEAKER_05

Uh, we'll hit a wacky. Got to cover off the net ball grand final.

SPEAKER_07

Yep.

SPEAKER_05

NRL, AFL, uh, athletics for the Australian concept of athletics. And more than that, I'm gonna rant.

SPEAKER_06

Of course you are. And I think there's a shithy as well. I hope so. But I've got a feeling they might be together. Uh-huh. So a new segment. Yep. It's gonna be a shit rant. Oh, wonderful. Because I can't separate out the stuff that's pissed me off that much this week. Right. You're angry again, Martin. No, not right now, but I will be a bit later. Oh, things are brewing. You need to have a drink. Talk about brewing. Talk about brewing. Have a brew. The greatest ale, better than the last one.

SPEAKER_05

Ranked best ale in the world. What? No less than eight times.

SPEAKER_06

And that's not an Australian judge. No, no, international beer competition. By people in Adelaide. No, absolutely not. Specifically, the Cooper's Red sparkling ale. And this tonight, you remember last time we had to do something from Adelaide for a good reason? Sparkling water. This piss off. Is because the Adelaide Thunderbirds got the job done. Yeah. After all the final series Adelaide have got into, we've now got a title. Very good. However, Martin, I have a joke. I do. Paddy and Murphy are two Irish friends. Yes. Paddy. Sitting on the banks of the river Nile. Paddy Murphy Nile. Yep. Having a beer. Oh nice. A Guinness, but not a Cooper's. Well, that's not a beer. Not Rick Guinness. I know it's not. Thank you. It's a thousand times better than just a beer.

unknown

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_06

So I'm just sat there. Yes. Nile of them's got a rod in the in the water. Okay. Passing the time of the day. So he's thrown his rod in the water. Indeed. And and they're just having a bit of a lazy chat. Yeah. And then suddenly Paddy goes, Ah! And Murphy says, What's happened? It's a crocodile's bitten my foot off. And Murphy says, Which one? And Paddy says, I don't know. They all look the same to me. Because unlike Paddy, I could see it from a mile away. Well done. We have a clicker of Smartin. Oh, really? This was there one this week? There was. Did you find it? Oh mate, I always have trouble finding I know. But it's on the tip of my tongue. Yes. And I reckon I can put my finger on it. Excellent. Excellent. However, what have you have you got a tasty clip for us doing that? Look, you might think this is sport. You might not think I miss that one. Not really. This is you might think this. Well, actually, it sort of rolls on, doesn't it? Yeah, you can do it. Oh, it does. It rolls off the tongue. Absolutely. Yes, go. However, this might be sport and it might not be sport, but I couldn't. Does it have anything to do with page? No. Okay. So it's not a page turn. No. No, but it does. What have we got? Come on, John. What did you what did you find for your clickerati? My clicker arti. Well, I'll tell you what. Your Prime Minister. Oh. Last week he was our Prime Minister, Sir Kir. Your ex. Yeah, I know. Yes. This now is our current. Oh, yes. What did he do? He's a he's not a current buddy. He's a brazen. He's a complete sultana. He's an attack. He went on something similar to this. He did. He went, I did hear this. And he was asked a question. And I believe it was a kiss kiss marry shag. Yeah, not the question that I've recognised for that question. That's been edited nice week. Well, he was given three options, wasn't he? Oh lord. Yep. What was the third one? I don't remember. No. But it didn't really matter to Albo, did it? Because what were his choices? Well, he went straight for the Shag with Kylie. Yes. And the marriage with? Oh well, he's already married. No, no. He also said married to Kylie. That dated Kylie. He went Kylie for all three. Oh. Yeah. Because I that was doughy. Look, he's your prime minister. What a doomer. Oh, mate. Ah, what a classic. When I first heard classic. To be fair, my first thought was. Well, you're right, it's Kylie. But beyond that, what are you thinking do? Why were you even asked this question? That's worse. And he's putting it. And why did you answer it? It shows how dim he is. It's it's not good. And second part of the clickeress, Martin. Yes. This is real sport now. Okay. I mean, that sort of is sport. That's funny. I love the fact that he had to make a public apology. I know. Yes, I know, I know. Well, he knows he's not doing the next election, so he's gonna go. Oh Lord, I've done it. Yeah. The Socceroos changing their goalpick keeper just for the penalties. Oh now. Wow. That is clickbait. That has been the clickbait of the week for a children's sport. I actually missed that detail. Right. Because I had gone to do a 5K park run at the start of the penalty shootout. Good. And I and I missed the penalty shootout.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. And it was only a couple of days later that I found out we'd actually remove the beach and put in the Ryan.

SPEAKER_06

Ryan. Okay. Matt Ryan. Yeah, he that is his fourth World Cup. He is a great keeper. You mean he's old.

SPEAKER_05

Maybe he's a better penalty keeper.

SPEAKER_06

I think that is a theory. No. However, any reflex sport where your heart's pumping the adrenaline's going. You know, you're you're on your toes for a whole match, and then you get subbed off for a guy who hasn't been doing that. Hasn't played the entire tournament, hasn't kept goals the entire tournament. Yeah. Yeah, I would have thought. And then you lose it. Totally stupid. So I mean he he rolled the dice, went from the big gamble, and looked like complete prat. Well, that is part of rolling the dice, isn't it? Yes. You uh really very silly decision. Yeah, I think if you've backed in Beach for the entire tournament, back him in one more time. Yeah, I think that's a that's a that's a Pupovich. Is what that is. Very good. Well, like I said though, he you know, when you're in the game and your your adrenaline's going, your reflexes are happening, yeah, you're touching the ball, yeah, you're already a part of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your legs are moving, yep, you're on your toes, you know, your mind's going real fast. Yeah. To be swapped over with a bench guy who hasn't been part of any match so far. Really? To be fair, and I I think this was the wrong choice, but to be fair, I couldn't believe Matt Ryan wasn't keeping at any point of the tournament. Yeah, but Beach had done so well in the doing really well, and so yeah, good on him. But yeah, well, anyway, there's this one. The click done for the week. Yeah, what have you got, Martin? State of origin? Yeah, state of origin's a fairly easy one. Game three up here in Brisbane tomorrow night. So it is, it's very soon. Uh, New South Wales have gone a slightly bigger forward pack. Yeah. And the only late change is Ethan Strange. Looks like he may not come up off an ankle injury he's had over the weekend in training. Okay. Uh, so really good utility player, brilliant in the first game. Didn't play the second, but should have just came off the bench. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I think he'll be a loss if he doesn't play. Yeah. Um, with uh New South Wales have got a bigger, bigger front forward pack with one specific thing. They've made no secret of their plan. Yeah. Bash the crap out of Munster. Yeah, yeah. Oh, Munster in particular. Of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The captain, the guy who just played unbelievably. And so he so they should. They should not be allowing him to do anything other than get hit. Well, they did last time and they got smashed. I don't think they tried. I think they just stood back and watched. They certainly did. Yes, it was awful. Yeah. Sorry, so Munster's response was it appears they've picked a bigger pack. Uh-huh. I'm assuming it's to put me on my ass. Yeah. So I'm guessing they're going to put me on my ass. Sure. So he's ready. And then he said, and then I'll get up because I ain't going to stop. Yeah. Bastard. Yep. Well, because he probably bloody won't. Well, he's good enough to. So your prediction? I had it written at 3422, I think I said last time. But and you said nowhere near, you said 36. 5416. Yeah, I don't I think it'll be tighter just because deciders oftenly are. Oftenly it's a new one. Often are. Yes. That will go with oftenly. I like that. You can be oftenly, yeah. Why not? What do we know about the English language? When you don't have words, make them up. You make them up. Yes. And if William Shakespeare can, we can. We all can it. Shakespeare or Shakespeare. Shakespeare. Parkinson's? Oh, what's okay? Well, what's your prediction? 50. 5416. And it hurts my head to say this. You had guns a lot lately. Queensland. Yeah, I think they are gonna. I think that they're they're gonna. Smash you. Yeah, I think they're gonna look at New South Wales and go, yep. But next year, 2027. No, no, no, no. Exactly right. So who do we get? I don't know. Well, we know the Brisbane Broncos are gonna flick off Maguire. What did you just say? Flick off Maguire. They're gonna tell, I don't even think he'll see out the season. So he's gonna be walked from Brisbane because you know, win a premiership, get rid of your coach the next year. Get him back. Get him back to state of origin. He played once one year he coached and we won it. Yeah, okay. Yeah, somebody will. Maguire has the ability to win every time he takes on a coaching assignment. What he doesn't do is longevity of wins or things like a uh Ivan Cleary at Penrith. Yeah, okay. He doesn't do that. Three games a year is perfect. He'll keep winning. Well, you don't know yet. Well, with this is the thing we do with Maguire. On paper, it sounds good, Martin. Every single thing he's touched has turned to gold except for the West Side. That's why he won it last uh two years ago when he coached. That's in the past. Yes. Anyway, how much how many people does the Subcorp hold? 65. Okay. 65 to 70. That's a lot. I think it's almost 70. Yeah, packed out. So big crowd. Yeah. Yeah, solid fear. If you got close to 70,000 in there, 60 would be Queensland. So you're looking at yeah, okay, 60. Really? Yeah. Oh, yeah, they'll get a lot up there from not from Queensland, but 60,000 from Queensland and the design of the stadium, it is loud as hell. Yeah, it's incredible how loud that place is. Yeah, right. Yeah. Yeah, it's deafening. Okay. All right then. Well then. So state of origin, it looks to be fairly standard in regards to teams picked. Uh-huh. They're the Queensland, I believe, have got no changes. New South Wales, only one late change. Okay. So pretty much down the line of what they thought was going to happen. Yeah. So now it just all play out in 24 hours' time. Okay, so Queensland are a fingernail boy on the bench, I take it. Yeah, they I think they will play him this time. Yeah. I th or they didn't need to last time, which is probably fine. Yeah. But he is a straight bench trunk card. He's an ace in the back. Yeah. You bring him on for 15-20 minutes at the end of the second half. He could score three tries. Oh, yeah. With a tired forward pack facing him. Yeah. He could either score or create three tries in 20 minutes. 34-22 was my prediction from last week. It is written. It is written. It is wrong. You've given not enough to Queensland and far too much to New South Wales, I think. We will see. We will see. However, Martin, are we? Yes, we're rolling on to the AFL. Yeah, AFL. Well, what happened? Oh mate, what did happen? Can I just start where I went, please? Because I know this is mainly your sport. Yes. But you got something I couldn't get. A ticket. A ticket. Yes, indeed. So I've got to cheers to that. Yeah. Went to the uh the the Sun's Collingwood match. Yes. Goingwood. Insightful chart of that one. I know. Isn't it great? You know, you know you've got a you know you've got a team of dollars when the only chart they can come up with is their own name slower. I even said that sounds intelligent. You couldn't believe it. Anyway, oh anyway. What a game. Close for a start, really close. Collingwood pretty much led through 90% of it. Yeah, yeah. They were good. Probably shouldn't have won. I think they should have won. Maybe on paper, like leading into the game. Or before. Maybe. Yeah, 50-50. But they lost the last two matches there. So I've been there two years, three years in a row now. This is the first one that they've won. I think you've seen win. Yeah. Right. How'd that feel? Great. Did you only win the football? What do you mean? I'm pretty sure you guys won the fights as well. I couldn't believe it. Well, what the AFL call a fight. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it was more than. What I couldn't understand. Stop it. Stop it. Is it the ref? It was just letting it carry on. Oh yeah, no, they they can't intervene. Oh, why not? Oh, they're not allowed to intervene. You're serious. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because if they walk into it and start pulling, they're going to get hit. So the refs are told, just get in there and tell them. Stop it. Don't be this dumb. So if you if you go back to the replay, the refs the the the umpire says, boys, it's not worth the money. Yeah. Because they also know no one's gonna fight. Yeah. No one's gonna throw a punch. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not gonna happen. You're gonna get six weeks for throwing punches. Okay. No one's actually going to fight. So it's a bit pushy-shuvy. There's a lot of dragging. Yes.

SPEAKER_07

It was dragging. Well, they dragged them off.

SPEAKER_06

It didn't like drag them off, it like dragged them in. It was honestly, it was it was sort of funny. And the the dog of the lead. The dog of the lead. Maynard! Just a just a filth. Hey, look, he didn't start it. Yes, he did, did he? Mr. Long did. No. Maynard did, I think. You need to go back another 30 seconds. Okay. All right. Well, when Jed Walter kicked that goal, it was Maynard that took off and ran into him face on. Okay. And yelled at him and pushed him backwards. Alright. And then when he went in for a second go at the young player, Jed Walter's only 19 or 20. Uh-huh. That was when Long came in from behind and went, no, no, no. You're not going to take on one of our kids. So Long gets a two-week suspension. He did smack him pretty hard in the ribs from behind. Easily worth two weeks. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Oh, no, easily. Easily worth two weeks. So your description description of Maynard as the dog of the he's a he's a sniper. He is filth. He'll hit anyone from behind. But he went, only went like that to the ref because he was running, and I'm pretty sure he pushed his hand. I don't think he intended to push the ref. No. I think he just tried to stop. Yep. And you're going to go, well, that's not allowed, you can't touch them. You can't touch them. Yeah. Yeah, you can't touch them. Yeah. And nor should you be allowed to. Otherwise, it's soccer. And soccer's ridiculous. How much they attack their refs. Well, they're touching up. So they round up on them, don't they? They do more than that. It's just in the World Cup, they only round up on them. Yeah. Lower levels, they'll put their hands on them. Yeah, yeah. You can't. You can't intimidate, you can't run at, you can't put your hands on officials. You just can't do it. As per the interview with Gary McKet. Earlier today, yes. Who wasn't pointing Percy at the porcelain? No, but he was pointing Percy at Maynard. Yes. And two Camilla. Both should have got a week. Camilla. Was she playing? I don't know. But he shouldn't be playing this week against Adelaide, that's for sure. But that is the way it goes. So, um well and that's Bollock. So Collingwood, the pie's in ninth. Uh oh, yes, they are. Yeah. Yes, yes, courtesy of their draw with Hawthorne. Yes, Carlton have lifted to 10th. Okay. They're in the wildcard. Wow. So here's a little weird thing for you. Yeah. Carlton have now won seven in a row and landed themselves in contention. Yep. Seven weeks ago, they were second to last. Well, it's because they had a shit coach. Yes. And they coach, and now they've done seven wins in a row. Amazing. In those same seven weeks, Gold Coast was second. They've lost seven in a row. They're now 14th. Yeah, I know. I saw that today. Yep. So that's gone. No one would have predicted those two changes to be like that. That is incredible. Yes. Yeah. And your Adelaide gonna win? Yeah, well, we're playing West Coast and the West, so not a great team. Probably didn't have a great, great game, but yeah, easy enough. Yep. And I believe Melbourne. Melbourne. What a game. Again, the weirdest game. Didn't they get to like 80 points to nine up at half time half time? They went. Something like that. Yes. Yeah, they 77 points up at half time. Wow. That's mad. They went to Tassie. Nobody beats Hawthorne in Tassie. It's just a shit all of them. I can't believe we've got to go there in two years every second week and play. Yeah. Awful conditions. Got themselves out halfway through the third quarter to a 93-point lead. Yeah. Yeah. And then Hawthorne in the last quarter went, might just play now. Hold my beer. And brought it back to 23 points. So caused up 70 points. They closed up. It's a weird game. Don't get it. I think that's partly Melbourne as well. Yeah. But Melbourne went on and won by 29. So no 35, sorry. So not terrible. If you said I'm going to Tasmania and I'm going to beat Hawthorne by 35 points, you'd go, yeah, cool, done. I'm out. I'm happy. Now this is the bit where I say, well, I remember. Yeah. Because this won't happen on the visual tasks. This will happen on the audio. But I went around the ground and interviewed a few people. So when you at the back of the Collingwood sunscreen, very nice. Yes, yes, of course. So if you listen to the audio, then you will hear interviews with various people on how they think the game was going and who was going to be. And when you ask the Collingwood fan a question, do you remember a question you might have asked them? Well, something on the lines of who do you think will win? Fair enough. And did they go COLIWOF? And that was all they got? Hi, this is John here from uh Sportsbiz Podcast, and I'm with Max. Max, who you going for today, buddy? I'm going for the pies, John.

SPEAKER_04

And why? What makes you think they're gonna win? Uh I think they'll win. Uh quite easily. I think they're they're on a bit of a roll. Suns are on a downhill trajectory. I think we'll be alright. Okay, do you not do you not think that the home advantage would be obviously advantageous to the Suns, but Collywood haven't won here for the last two years. What do you think? Tough to overcome. They they play well here, but I think the Pies uh they'll they'll take it.

SPEAKER_06

Cheers, mate. Hope you're right. Excuse me, mate. I am from uh Sports Fitz Podcast. Who's gonna win today? Gold Coast. And why do you think that? Well, just better. You're just better. Two years in a row, you're going for a third.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, exactly.

SPEAKER_06

Fair enough. Good luck. What's your name, mate? Nick. Thanks, Nick. Cheers, mate. Hello, mate. What's uh what's your name? Uh Ben Ben Wood from Melbourne. Ben Wood from Melbourne. Okay, Ben Wood from Melbourne. Who's gonna win today? Uh Pies by 10. Pies by 10. I should have known that because you're actually dressed for the occasion in a pies outfit. Pies by 10, what makes you think that after two years in a row of losing?

SPEAKER_01

Uh I think they're just on the back of their trips to Darwin. I don't think they play as well after those. Uh, and I think we'll beat him in the midfield pretty pretty straightforward. Yeah. Fantastic. Well, let's hope you're right, mate. Yeah, cheers. Thanks, Ben. No, no worries.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you. Excuse me, sir. You look like a likely lad. I'm John from Sportsbiz Podcast. What are your thoughts on the game?

SPEAKER_03

Uh, not too bad. They've been pretty good, going both ways. But Pipe's playing good footy. Yeah. Enjoying it. What did you think of the melee at the end there? Uh look, not too bad, mate. I love his effort. Um what seemed a bit of a snipe, but hey, it goes both ways. Fantastic, both ways.

SPEAKER_06

Fantastic. Cheers, mate. Thank you. See ya. Excuse me, madam. You look like a really good Collingwood supporter. This is John from Sportsbiz Podcast. What do we got here? Who's what's your name? Me? Matt, Matt.

SPEAKER_03

Matt and your Georgia. Georgia.

SPEAKER_00

Georgia. Fresh supporter. Fresh supporter. A fresh supporter. Fantastic. So, well, I'm a Collingwood man too, so we're all on the same team. So tell me, what do you think of the game so far?

SPEAKER_02

Really good, really good. Pretty even. Uh I love that little bit of the fight at the end. That was good. It looks great, wasn't it? What did you think of the fight?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I thought it was a good entertainment and scrap. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. I wanted to get in. I wanted to be like, fuck, just get me in there. What was it about? Any idea? I think Maynard got hit. Sort of behind the scenes, a bit of a cheap hit, so the boy just got around him, as you would. Yeah. You know? I love that. I love that camaraderie. That's why I love football. I love that get around him.

SPEAKER_06

Have you come up from Melbourne as well?

SPEAKER_02

No, not from Melbourne. I grew up going for the pies because my dad goes to Collingwood so I'm growing up with him, but yeah, I love footy, yeah. I love footy, I love sport, yeah. Come on, yeah. And I love the fight. I just love yeah, yeah. Well done. That that aggression. Like exactly.

SPEAKER_06

Alright, nice to meet you both. I'll let you get on with it. Cheers, yeah. Fence, can I have a it's John here from Sportsbiz Podcast.

SPEAKER_00

We've got a Suns guy and we got a pies guy. Who's who's gonna win, blaves? Uh well, I I do believe that the Suns are gonna win uh by about three or four points. It's gonna be it's gonna be a nail bitter, but they're gonna come back in the end. We have a prediction and you two?

SPEAKER_06

Pies by 17. 17, fantastic, thank you. Enjoy your beers. I was just wondering if I'm gonna have the kids' um interpretation of the game so far. What do you think?

SPEAKER_04

Good. Good?

SPEAKER_06

Who's gonna win?

SPEAKER_04

Um Collingwood.

SPEAKER_00

Collingwood? The pies? Yay, what do you think?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, definitely go the pies.

SPEAKER_00

Go the pies. And are you a pie man too? You're gonna go on and shout, go the pies. Yeah. Go the pies! Go the pies, go the pies. Yay! Thank you. Hi, it's John here from Sportsbiz again. I've got with me Sam with her thoughts on the game right now.

SPEAKER_01

Ben Log's a fucking dog and go the pies.

SPEAKER_06

Is that all you gotta say?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's it.

SPEAKER_06

Fair enough to. I bet you you tailored your questions so that they could just answer with one word. Hey Martin. That's what you need. Yes. I'm gonna give you this to hold.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, that's awful.

SPEAKER_06

What a visual. Allow me to quote. Allow me to quote Greg Mackenzie. Gary McKenzie. Sorry, sorry, Gary. I might vomit. Gary Mackenzie. I'm going to vomit if I have to hold this any longer. Well, anyway. Don't put it near me. We've just started. It will infest me. We're starting a new segment. Not doing it tomorrow. A new segment. And the new segment is Bet you didn't know. Right. Now Bet you didn't know that makes you vomit. Bet you didn't know. The Sharon is the only Aussie rule ball sold for games. Correct? Nope. Okay. But we'll go with that one around. We'll go with that. It's the AFL ball. That's what I meant. AFL ball. In Western Australia, they use the burley ball. Right. And in South Australia, they use the folk no. So did Friedman use a burley ball for the F. No, no, no, no, no, no. That's in the in the WAFL. So different. In the AFL, the Sharon is the ball. That's what I meant. So anyway, but apparently, according to sources who I have spoken to in depth. Yes. What have you got? They have said that the Sharon is a ball which is way ahead of the competition as far as the game is concerned. However, it was invented in. Where was it invented, Martin? Victoria. No. Thomas Sharon, I think. Oh, you're right. It was William Sharon. In 1880, in a suburb called Carlingwood. That is where he owned his saddlery. Indeed. Yes. It was a saddler repairing old English rugby balls. Yes, that's right. Yes. And you realize the ball, you know, was then we're gonna crap kick to crap. So he just invented a better, more aerodynamic ball. Interesting. Yeah. It's it's uh you're almost there. Yeah. So he was actually repairing a damaged rugby ball. That's what it said. No, you said he created one. No, I didn't. I said he was repairing damaged rugby balls. Yes, okay. And that's how he came up with it. That's exactly right. Yes, what's it got to do with the Collingwood Football Club? Because it came from Collingwood. He was in Collingwood. What's that got to do with the Collingwood Football Club? Everything. You sure? Everything. What was the date? 1880. What was the date on the ball for when Collingwood Football Club was founded? I have looked. Check your balls. Anyway, 1992, my good man. Well, it doesn't mean that he couldn't have created it before. No, he did. He created the ball 12 years before the club existed. Very argumentative. Nothing to do with the Collingwood Football Club. Of course it happened. Anyway. Boobs up at me. Nothing to do with Collingwood. What do you do, Collingwood? Martin, what else have you got for me? Let's think. What happened to Australia? Did it hurt? What happened to Australia in the soccer? So we've touched on it a little bit. Yeah. This may send me over the edge. I'm not sure. But when I say it may, it's going to. Uh-huh. So we we we had our round of 32 games. We had it Egypt, as many people will know. We equipped ourselves well. Yes. We got to one all. Got through extra time. Your own goal. Oh, we didn't even score that, did we? We didn't. So we made it through four games in the World Cup. Yeah. Scoring off our own boot. Twice. Twice. Yes. So what we now know is that's a problem. Now, what did we do? What did we do from there? Not much, I'm afraid. So let's let's go through some details here because we we lost. So let's put that out there first. Yes. Round of 32. We lost to Egypt on penalties 4-2. Yeah. Going to be an even match. We're matched about the same in the world rankings. Uh-huh. So we lost, okay, fair enough. I'm willing to cop that. How we lost, I'm not that okay with. And so this might be the start of a rant. Rant on, Martin. And I think a little bit of shithousery. Now, first of all, we've already said this, Matt Ryan. Yeah. That's a problem. I think that's a problem. Oh, it is. So stupid idea. What we also know is we missed two of our four penalties. Yes. Our first penalty was taken by Harry Souter. Yes. What did he do with it? A centre back. Doesn't matter what he did with it. Oh, he balanced. He ballooned it over the bar. Yes. Then you have Jackson Irvine, not a striker, but a midfielder. How stupid. And Mabil, who is a striker. And then Harrington stood up for his for the fourth. Of which, where does Harrington play? Lucas Harrington? Centre back. Right. 18 years of age. Yeah. His first round with Australia. So he had to take, and of course he missed. Yes. We lose it. Now strange choices. This is where I start to get upset. Because I think that's total shit. So here we go. He pooped it alright. So now I'm not suggesting every one of these people played in this game. But let me read to you the names of the strikers in our squad. Yes. Mohammed Turi, Nestri Irunkunda, Teti Yangi. What are you getting at? Christian Volpato. Matthew Leckie. Awa Mabil. Brilliant. Nishan Velapali or Vellapili. Are they? And of course, we also know a midfielder by the name of Metcalf. Are they all applying for the remake of the man from Snowy River? No. They probably wouldn't volunteer. No. You've got a list of strikers right there. You notice that none of those names, apart from Mabel, is on the we'll take a penalty list. Yeah. I know. It's their job. I know, man. They get paid to kick goals and not one of them was on that.

SPEAKER_05

Oh sorry, only one of them was on that bloody list.

SPEAKER_06

I know. I don't get it. Top of it, you poop it. How the hell can you keep bleeping at? I don't know, because it doesn't like you, because it's not happy. Because this is not a happy moment. How the bloody hell can you do a penalty shootout with a bunch of people that don't take penalties and don't score goals? Exactly right. Exactly right, Martin. He's a pooper bitch. Crack your fat. I feel very unhappy about this. That did not satisfy me. Very unhappy about this. I think that that result could have been significantly different. Yeah. Even if we just included the two guys that scored our two goals for the tournament. Exactly. Just those two. You know what I'm gonna do?

SPEAKER_05

Don't make an 18-year-old have to stand up and carry the role of a striker.

SPEAKER_06

I know. I'm not snorting that. Mate. What's that for? Look. Because I'm not doing it. That deserves. No. That won't calm me down at all. Hitting the crack. That is a hitting the crack moment. Mate. That is a rant. That is. That is shithusery from Popovich. And a rant. And a hitting the crack. It's a bit of everything. Need a credit card. All in. All in one go. Oh, sorry everybody, but that did my head in. I could tell. Yeah, I was very annoyed about that. That's better than the all-in-brawl. All in brawl at the end. And I'm going to tell you right now, because there's no way to verify this. Yep. We would have beaten Argentina. Hundred percent we would have beaten Argentina, but now we'll never know. We can never find this detail out. So we'll just have to continue on knowing that we would have beaten Argentina. Now, if Egypt happened to do it, I'd be a bit annoyed about that, too. Alright, what else have we got, Charlie? Well, we've got a legend. Great of legend. Yes. Who's our legend? He doesn't come into conversation much these days, and it's weird. Is that right? Rod Laver. Oh, well, doesn't he have an arena named after him? He does. But when And isn't that right next to the Collingwood Museum? Of course. That's why he doesn't come into conversation very much anymore. Because Collingwood have usurped him. No. The younger generation yet again have usurped him with conversations on the goat. The goat? Yes, greatest of all time. Well, I know what goat stands for. Yeah, but. We they've got about Djokovic, Federer, Nadal. Well, Lever. Those three don't rate anywhere near the greatest of all time. Well, I agree. I agree. Yeah. But anyway, so however, the what I'm saying is that they that today's conversation is all about those three. Right. Um, look, Rod Lever won the Grand Slam twice. That is four. And that's a real grand slam, not the crap they call a grand slam these days. Exactly right. Right. Four different surfaces, which are all very, very different. He transcended the sport. He went from amateur to pro in the world. Oh, in that transfer, yeah, of course. He was the leader of it all. Yep. And then became the number one pro in the world. With a couple of Aussies actually following him, Ken Rose will be who was his main rival. I want to say Emerson, but Emerson was. That's right. Okay. Absolutely. And then you also had at the end of his career, unfortunately, arguably even better than Labour, Lou Hode. Never get never. No. Well, this is the point. The poet was a superhuman person. It was unbelievable. Yeah, but the problem with Lou is his name rhymes with Toad.

SPEAKER_05

And this means he's never going to be popular in the media.

SPEAKER_06

Simple as that. The guy was unbelievable. Unbelievable. Do you know what's what's sad about Lou Hode's career at this point, right now, for this conversation? Yep. I actually know nothing about it. Ah. So I do not know what he achieved. Well we'll bring him in in the next one. Two episodes. But I feel like he might be a legend that might need to be spoken about. I believe he was clear. So what else did Rod Lever achieve? Every sport. Oh, he was one of those. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. He can turn his into nearly anything. But yeah, Lever, 200 career titles. Wimbledon four times. Yeah. French twice. Yep. French Open twice. US Open twice. Australian Open three times. Is he the last Aussie to win the Aussie Open? Nah, no. Or was that no Mark? Is that Newcomb? No, Mark Edmondson. Oh, Mark Edmondson was the last one. So John Newcomb never did it. No. Well, for some reason I thought John. Well, if he did, he did it before Mark Edmondson. He might have actually I think he did. No, you're right. He did twice. But he did it before Edmondson. Well, I didn't wouldn't have guessed that either. Yeah, I think. There you go. Okay. And I think I'm not putting Australian tennis players down in any way, because when I was you know the opposite. But I'm pretty certain Edmondson won it in a year where the real big names of the time didn't play. Okay. I think your Jimmy Connesees weren't there. Your Bjorn Borg certainly wasn't there. Yeah. Yep. So it still won. It's a bit like when Leighton Hewitt spent a year at number one.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

And he filled the gap between Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. Yeah. Still deserved it 100%. But he kind of filled the gap between two fairly impressive. That's a solid effort. Very impressive. Not something I've ever done. Also, Lever was an amazing doubles player. He he was equal with his titles at doubles as he was at singles. Now does Federer do that? No. Does Djokovic do that? No. Did Vidal do that? No. No, they no, no, no. No, but they played back in the days where you played doubles. That's well, they did. Yes. That's right. And then make them a better player, actually, because obviously it brings in angles and volleys a lot more. And in those days they did volley a lot more, hardly ever today. It's all baseline. Okay, Rod Laver. Yeah, and he won the Davis Cup, or he won, Australia won Davis Cup four times when he was playing and he was captain. Yeah. When it actually no, when it meant something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a solid. You're going on and winning all the singles and all the doubles in the big tournaments in the opens, and you're winning Davis Cup when it was important. Yeah, absolutely. And the best players played it. Yeah, so Rod Lever. Oh, Rod Lever. Aussie legends. What a so we we can go from one Aussie legend to the next. Why not? I've got another Aussie legend that we need to speak about. Go for it. The Adelaide Thunderbirds. Well, yes. Well done, Adelaide. Aussie legends. They've done well. Most of them are Aussie. Not all. Some of them. Cheers to you, Thunders. So they've knocked off the uh the Super Netball. They've taken out the grand final on the weekend. And they beat? Uh Melbourne Vixens. Melbourne. Now, to be fair, Melbourne Vixens. That was their third straight grand final. Okay. And they were going for back-to-back titles.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_06

So their first one that they made, unfortunately for them, they came up against Adelaide. And Adelaide beat them. Then their second one, where the Vixens won last year, they didn't play Adelaide. Yeah. And then this year they had to play Adelaide again. Uh-huh. And got done again. What was the score? Well, halfway through the second quarter, it was an incredibly dour close match of 10-10. Okay. And ended up 61-40. Oh, wow. So it went a bit pear-shaped.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

And then they accelerated matchups. Adelaide just turned the switch. They'd be doing it all season. Yeah. And they absolutely buried them. Good. Well, Martin and Martin, you're going to be able to do it. Yeah, finally of all the bloody finals and series we've made this year. So this is actually, this is actually three out of four seasons. Yes. That that we've uh that that we've won the title. So three from four. Go Thunderbirds. We're doing the bouncing off the helmet. Got it. What have we got? Well we've bouncing off the helmet. Totally unexpected happenings in Australian sport this week. We're gonna recycle back a little bit. Yeah. What did we do? To a pole vaulter called Duplantis. Oh yes. Mondo. Yeah. Got beaten. Again. By Curtis Marshall from Australia. Yes. Again. Is that the third time in a row? I think it is. Ha ha, Mondo. Pissing off the helmet. We are, let me tell you, when we go to the when we go to the Commonwealth Games, Duplantis is not a hope of beating Marshall. I'm gonna put that out there right now. Yeah, I know. Yep. Do you know why? Go on. Sweden aren't in the Commonwealth. So I reckon Marshall's on there. Well, I think you're probably right. So what a great effort! I know, I know, I know. And again, an unfashionable sport, really, pole vaulting, isn't it? It's not a. Have you? You may have done this because you grew up in a world over there. Yeah. And you'd go to different sports. Yeah. Have you ever seen pole vaulting live? Yes. It's phenomenal. It's the one sport in the athletic arena in the field events. Yeah. More so than long jump and high jump, where the entire audience gets involved. Oh, absolutely. Watching it, cheering, clapping to the what they're looking for. Yeah, it's it's I've been a part of it as well in the Commonwealth games. But it doesn't get enough TV action. And it should. Of course it should. It's a cracking sport. It's insane. I knew somebody who I played cricket with him actually, weirdly enough, who was in the British Commonwealth or English, thank you. Commonwealth squad for pole vaults. Oh yes. Yes. Was his name Eddie? Eddie, yes, it could have been. I know what you're talking about, Martin. So do we have anything else for today? Oh, we do. We got two more important things to deal with. Okay. We'll touch on one very easily. Yep. T20, women's World Cup cricket. Yes. England there was a few years. Seven titles in a well, you sound like their captain. And I'm gonna mention this. So England made it through in their home tournament at Lourdes, where England men and women played their best cricket. No, they don't. No, they bloody don't. They got belted. They played crap at Lourdes. And who did they get belted by, John? Australia. Australia. Seven in a row, that makes. For T20 World Championships for Australia. So uh Australia won the toss, sent England in on a lovely sunny afternoon, and they said it's nice and sunny. We thought we'd have a bit of a run around in the field. Right. Okay. Four for 150 off the 20 overs. Yeah. That's shit. Australia then rolled through three for 150, three off 17. Yeah. Seven wickets in hand, three overs in hand. Yeah. It's worth about 40 runs, probably. Yeah. I would imagine, even for the women. Yeah. So that's an absolute mauling. Yes. In their home, at the home of cricket. But it only gets better. And I share this because this is, and I'm going to include this in English cricket. Because it's now all under the same banner. The English captain. No, it's not. It is. The English captain in the presser after the final loss, where they've just had their asses handed to them, says to the camera, we're heading in the right direction. We're really confident, even though we just lost by seven wickets. Uh-huh. That is as Brendan McCullum as anything I've heard over there at Lord's. Oh my god. Someone wrote something out for her and said, say this because it's what Baz would say. Yeah. Oh brilliant. What who's your 2020 captain? I don't even know. You don't even know. Oh no. Um Bison. Oh no, no, Bison handed it over. It's Inglis. Josh Inglis. Oh my god. Lord knows we're crap at it. Yeah. Unless you talk about our women. And what did he don't change genders? I was just asking. No, I'm speaking to the women, mate. I'm staying male, buddy. I know you're not. We're winning in the women, so I'm go on backing that all the way. You can back the women. Uh last thing for me. Yes. Greatest Australian running festival. Oh, yeah. Was uh a couple of days ago on the Gold Coast. Yeah. The uh Gold Coast Marathon weekend. Yes, close to our heart, Mark. Close to our heart. We've both run it many times. Yep. Multiple distances. Yep. This event is just bigger and bigger and bigger. So there are five events on this weekend. Yeah. Marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k, and a junior 2.5k dash. Yep. We now had in those two days 36,234 finishes across those five events. That is a running festival. That is a feast for the eyes. Yeah. Early in the morning. Absolutely brilliant. Look, I mean, for no particular reason, but the the real one I'm interested in is the 42. Yeah, the marathon? Do you know who actually at the time? Australia has uh we did something here which uh we we don't do very often. Oh we had across the half marathon and the marathon, yeah, legitimate winners of the event on two occasions were Australians.

SPEAKER_07

No way.

SPEAKER_06

Now, because of the amount of international runners that come to this event, it's very rare. Yeah. So, however, one of the Australians, I will class him as an import. So certainly not born here, but is now Australian. Oh, okay. So he has now set an Australian record by a mile. 208? Not even close. So we'll go we'll go the name first. Yeah. Have to. But he did.

unknown

Shh.

SPEAKER_06

That's already said. I have to do this. Strintsos. And he had to. Yeah. 20620. Oh, I'm fairly close with a 208. Yeah, but that's almost a kilometer. I know. Yeah. 206. And he's he's an Australian now. Oh, good on him. So now with imagine the marathon in the Commonwealth Games. Was he wearing the green and gold? No, you don't wear the green and gold. Not running for Australia in the this. But if he runs. Oh no, he won't run at the com games. Why? Because that will they start in three weeks. Oh, he hasn't qualified yet. No, there's no way you'd run this marathon and then one in three weeks. Well, he should. No, he can't do it. We shouldn't have done this one then, shouldn't he? Well, he wasn't picked for it, so it didn't matter. Oh, sorry. And the women? So uh hang on. So the the the women in the marathon, Ethiopian. Um Almaz Kabibi, 2245. Another Australian. No, no, no. No, she's Ethiopian. Oh, sorry, I thought you said the other two women. No, no, no, no, no, no, that comes and bear with me. So that was in the half marathon. Uh-huh. So half marathon won by a Japanese guy. Shumpi or shumpei. Shumpei. Oh, I've got to show you. Shumpei t meater. Can I guess the time? I'm not looking. One twelve. Fifty-two. One for 60-52. Yeah, one one hour fifty-two. Oh, did you say one twelve is in one hour twelve minutes? That's even too slow for the women. Yeah. Okay. No, no, no, no, no. No. One hour and fifty-two seconds. Wow. And to put that in perspective, the first Australian over the line rang second in one hour fifty-seven. So that's a bit of a sprint finish there. And the half marathon for the women was won in 107.29 by Isabella Bat Doyle, who is Australian. Bat Doyle. Bat Doyle hyphenated. Right. Yes. And uh she's a very good runner. Is she from Gotham? Yes. Yes. That's where she learnt to run. If I'm not mistaken, Sam Kerr, our uh our uh female soccer can uh captain has now gone back to America and playing in a team called Gotham.

SPEAKER_05

She is so there you go.

SPEAKER_06

Oh about that. So how about that? So yes, so um is Isabel won the half marathon, which again you don't see the Australians win that often. Yeah, yeah. And not on this event because of the amount of international runners. 6729, freaking incredible fantastic event. Uh, our resident coach, Michael Cochola, yeah. Uh he he paced. Oh, yeah. Uh, over the weekend, he does it, he gives back to the running community every year. So the half marathon, he paced the one hour 30 runners, and then the 55 minute runners on the Sunday morning in the 10K. What did he do it in? Probably exactly that. He would have been pretty much bang on those times that he had to run. Of course he would if he'd raced them uh an hour and ten, maybe? Probably an hour fifteen and about thirty-five for the ten. Yeah, yeah, well, that's pretty good. Yeah, anyway. So that's a roundup for me. That's Aussie Sport. Mate, I think that's all we have time for. That's awesome. It is, isn't it? So yeah, love it. Thanks to our two Ronnies, thanks to the immortals. Indeed, it is goodbye from me. And it's goodbye from him. Goodbye.
